With a surge of instinctive stupidity, Kendall lunges forward, his body moving faster than his thoughts can catch up. In that split second, time turns to a crawl, as Kendall sees the malicious intent behind the shooter’s eyes. He hears Mark’s sharp intake of breath, the collective gasps of the other hostages echoing in the room as Kendall’s outstretched hand reaches for Mark, his fingers brushing against his shoulder just as the shooter pulls the trigger. In a single moment, Kendall feels the impact of the bullet slamming into his body, a searing pain lancing through him like a white-hot poker. He staggers backward, vision going white for a second as his shoulder pulses in agony, and he fights to stay upright, his sole focus on protecting Mark from harm. Kendall, after the end of the series, is sent back the day the Waystar employee commits suicide, which doesn't sit well with Kendall, because, you see, he also killed himself.

Slowly, Al-Haitham turns around. And there, in front of him, stands a foreign yet familiar figure—the same blond hair, now just a little longer and styled. The same deceptively lithe figure, just a bit more filled out and visible due his choice in clothing. The same bright red eyes, now widening in surprise as they meet his own— The same voice, though more mature with age, and yet no less indignant as Al-Haitham remembers, when that man eventually demands, “What is going on here???”

After secretly attending Kaveh’s graduation ceremony, Al-Haitham got involved in a ley line incident that sent him to an unlikely future where he is not only on speaking terms but also lives with Kaveh in the same house. It all feels so unreal that Al-Haitham wonders if this future is real or of it's merely a figment of his wishful thinking.

Confronted to the brutal end he met at Satoru's hands, the raven-haired sorcerer faces once again a difficult decision: to follow the path traced before him or to try his best at rewriting history. While there is no erasing what has been done, the sourness of one regret burns higher than all through his very soul: He led his bloody crusade alone instead of keeping his past flame besides him. If offered the chance, what could Suguru possibly do to change their fate? What sin would he be willing to commit, he who has chosen to spill pain and horror over the streets of Japan? While the ethereal airport terminal that separates the living from the dead offers little to appease uncertainties; a flickering light promises hope, despair and unfortunate answers. Perhaps those answers should have remained unspoken. For every choice implies not only consequences but a price to pay

"Well," said Snow, aloud, still squatting in front of her, "I am Coriolanus Snow, as you have heard. And you are...?" "Katniss," she replied, automatically. A brief, very brief flash in his eyes. He was so close that Katniss could see it. Astonishment, and then fear. "... Does that mean anything to you?" she asked him. Snow smiled, tugged again; he let go of her hand and rose to his feet. “No,” he answered her. Liar. Katniss was in danger of having a crisis again. Liar. Snow had turned to Festus again and opened his mouth to say something to him. Liar! She stood up too, pale with anger, her arms shaking slightly. " Don't ," she hissed, "Lie to me! Never! "

Fic recs: 10 amazing works of star wars fan-fiction on ao3.

The Star Wars franchise has inspired its fans to create their own stories for decades. Here are some of the best Star Wars fanfics out there to enjoy.

The Star Wars franchise encompasses everything from the Skywalker saga and stand-alone movies, to live-action television series, cartoons, novels, and comic books. Little did George Lucas know that when he released  Star Wars  in 1977, it would open up the world to a fictional universe that would only grow with each passing decade and each generation of fans.

RELATED: Star Wars: 10 Fan Fiction Relationships We Wish Were Real

One of the biggest ways fans show their appreciation for the franchise and demonstrate their deep knowledge of its lore is through fan-fiction, and Archive of our Own houses one of the most impressive collections of material set in the galaxy far, far away. With over 150,000 stories and counting, it can be difficult to know where to begin, so here are 10 amazing works to get started.

The Story Of Finn

There is a not-so-insubstantial group of fans who feel that Finn should have been the hero of the Sequel Trilogy , and   The Story Of Finn , by LullabyKnell,   aims to remedy that by showing what the heroic deeds of ex-stormtrooper FN-2187 would have meant to the nameless armored men and women serving the First Order.

The 26,000 word story focuses on the ripple effect of Finn's actions in the lives of stormtroopers who, inspired by his journey, start to create ways for others who want to escape the fascist dictatorship. The story of "the traitor" is told again and again until it becomes the story of "the messiah." This fic inspired several outstanding continuations including Tomorrow (there'll be more of us)  and Have You Heard .

Double Agent Vader

Fans of the Dark Lord of the Sith will be sure to like  Double Agent Vader , by Fialleril ,  a fanfic that posits what would have happened if the infamous Sith Lord became a double agent a few years after  Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith .

RELATED: Star Wars: 5 Of The Nicest Things Darth Vader Ever Did (& 5 Of The Worst Acts Anakin Committed)

At nearly 93,000 words the fic feels like a novella, as well it should considering its timeline includes Vader working for the Rebellion with Leia Organa as his primary point of contact. Set as a series of one-shots (fully encapsulated short stories) it's very accessible, but also manages to give an in-depth analysis of Vader's personality using a unique scenario. It's considered one of the best  Star Wars  fanfics available.

Reprise (Parts I, II, III, & IV)

Time travel, in Star Wars ?  Reprise ,  by Elfpen, functions as a fantastic alternate universe fic from the perspective of Obi-Wan Kenobi  after he dies during his duel with Vader aboard the Death Star, waking up 41 years earlier in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Readers will get deep into the conflicted mind of the Jedi Master who felt even at the time of his death that he had unfinished business, and see what he does with the second chance to forge an entirely new path for himself.

Parts I, II, and III come in at 523,637 words, so this is a truly robust series that highlights the difficulty of trying to create a better future from a bitter past when Kenobi is clearly haunted by his memories and filled with regret. And it comes with a big bonus for Qui-Gon Jinn fans!

What would happen if Leia, having only known her father as Darth Vader, was given the opportunity to meet the real man behind the mask? This is the scenario explored in  Reflection , by Fyre,   when Leia gets to see him first as a Force ghost on Endor shortly after the destruction of the Second Death Star, and then at various other stages during her efforts to rebuild the Republic.

At around 7,000 words it's a brisk piece but a powerfully intimate one, focusing on Leia's frustration around forgiving a man she fought against for so many years. What could she say to "the Emperor's weapon," the man who destroyed so many people she loved? What had she always wanted to say to Anakin Skywalker, the man she never got a chance to meet? The answers will leave readers in tears.

The Sith Who Brought Life Day

The Sith Who Brought Life Day , by Ophelia_interrupted,   is a whimsical, hilarious fic about an everyman Imperial intelligence officer named Aswald who loses a bet and has the horrific honor of getting Darth Vader a present for Life Day. It reads like the  Star Wars  version of  Office Space,  complete with   lampooning of Imperial corporate culture.

At just over 13,000 words it's surprising just how much readers will quickly become attached to Aswald as he mines the data banks for the perfect Life Day gift and stumbles upon such nuggets as "Luke Skywalker was even several centimetres too short to be a stormtrooper. "  Routinely laugh-out-loud funny, the satire is full of asides and references to the Prequel and Original Trilogies for fans who appreciate meta-humor.

Old Man Luke

Luke Skywalker beats Obi-Wan Kenobi at his own game when, as an embittered and grizzled Jedi Master in  Old Man Luke , he travels back in time to troll the Jedi Master in his youth, before he became the mysterious figure who would riddle Luke's life with puzzling questions.

Clocking in at 70,000 words, this fic by scarletjedi is accessible and bingeable, especially for those fans who can't get enough of the sass and sarcasm between Luke and his former mentor. Along the way, he also bonds with a certain rascally young man from Tatooine, and completely deflates the hype of the Jedi Order.

The Tyranny Of Kinship

For fans of  The Clone Wars  and  Star Wars Rebels, The Tyranny Of Kinship , by A marielah, includes many fan-favorite characters like Captain Rex and Ahsoka Tano , but at its center is the familial dysfunction of the Skywalkers spurred on by a difficult conversation Bail Organa has to have with Darth Vader about the true nature of Leia's parentage.

Just shy of 40,000 words, this fic explores what might have happened if both Vader and Leia learned the truth of their connection while she was being held in the detention block of the Death Star. What begins as a stubborn interrogation of one another leads to a satirical and sharply written father/daughter buddy adventure that is equal parts hilarious and poignant.

Sky Marked Souls

No fan-fiction recommendation would be complete without a Reylo piece featuring the Resistance hero and the fiery First Order warrior. Sky Marked Souls , by AnonymousMink,   explores the Force bond between Ren and Rey in a unique way that feels timeless and romantic.

RELATED:  Star Wars: The 10 Best Reylo Scenes From The Sequel Trilogy

At around 22,000 words, it's substantial enough without feeling superfluous, and follows a prompt from cerulean8ullet on tumblr, "Soulmates get blue marks on their skin wherever their other person gets physical pain," creating some vivid and poetic imagery that allows the two to connect through empathy and understanding rather than pain.

Rebels: An Alternate Tale

For fans of Ahsoka Tano, one of the most beloved characters in recent  Star Wars  media,  Rebels: An Alternate Tale , by SirLoozElite ,  explores a series of events that could have gone differently had the young Jedi, or those around her, made different decisions.

Collected as a series of one-shots that have been assembled into a compendium that comes in at a whopping 420,000 words, this fic will have something for every fan who has wanted to expand the story of  Star Wars Rebels.  It begins with a confrontation between Ahsoka and Darth Maul in the lower depths of Malachor, continues with her encounter with Grand Admiral Thrawn , and concludes with a daring suicide mission.

One Hell Of A Mess

For fans who wished that hotshot Resistance pilot Poe Dameron and ex-stormtrooper Finn had been more than friends,  One Hell Of a Mess , by Noelia_G,   is a spiritedly entertaining focused fic on the two getting to know one another over the course of a dinner that Poe cooks for his skeptical friend.

The StormPilot fic comes in at right around 5,000 words so it's short and sweet, but the characterizations of Finn and Poe perfectly capture the chemistry seen on screen between the pair in the Sequel Trilogy. Rey even features, and the dialogue between the trio crackles with their snappy banter.

Fanfic / Darth Vader: Hero of Naboo

Edit locked.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/180_2.jpeg

Beginning with Darth Vader preparing to set a trap for Luke Skywalker on Bespin , the Dark Lord suddenly finds himself on Naboo during the Trade Federation blockade. Confused, but ever adaptable, Vader fights his way through the battle droids and convinces Qui-Gon and company to give him a ride off the planet. From there, things change drastically, as Vader is determined not to make the same mistakes he did the first time around.

The fic is now complete, and is planned to be the first in a series of fanfics that follow the prequel trilogy's events, heavily altered by the time displaced Vader's presence. The first sequel of the aptly named "Vaderline Trilogy", Darth Vader: Shattered Galaxy , has been posted.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Accidental Truth : After getting a look at Vader, Plagueis makes several educated guesses on whom he might be, with one of them being that Vader is a time traveler.
  • When Darth Sidious seemingly kills Darth Plagueis, it turns out to be an illusion.
  • Done again when Plagueis is fighting Sidious and notices that his apprentice isn't reacting like he should; he quickly discovers a squad of Doombot Sidiouses.
  • Actually Pretty Funny : Plagueis admits to Vader that he'd be more upset at how Vader is deliberately riling up Sidious if he wasn't so impressed, and is laughing as he says that.
  • Qui Gon and Obi Wan end up meeting Dooku before he left the order, who quickly helps them in calming down the situation during Vader's faux attack .
  • While waiting to find out the results of his meeting with the Council Anakin meets toddler Ahsoka who quickly latches onto him .
  • Dooku. While he is still clearly disillusioned with the Jedi Order, he hasn't actually left, and thanks to Vader's alterations to the timeline, he never joins Darth Sidious as a Sith Lord and indeed is one of the Jedi who leave to confront him alongside the other masters, even if his role means he doesn't directly take part in the battle himself.
  • Rune Haako. After Nute Gunray flies off the deep end, Rune Haako ultimately decides that enough is enough and shoots him in self-defense. He also attempted to save some of Gunray's prisoners prior to killing Gunray, and makes it abundantly clear that he hated Darth Sidious even if he has to respect the now-dead Sith Lord’s intelligence.
  • Affably Evil : Darth Plagueis flip-flops between this and Faux Affably Evil , depending on whom he's speaking to. Vader is caught off-guard by just how likable the guy is.
  • The Alliance : On advice from Vader, Padme seeks out and allies with various anti-Trade Federation groups (including the Mere Resistance, the Vulptereen, and the Lok Revenants) who are more than willing to liberate Naboo by force while the Senate blusters and wastes time .
  • Anti-Hero / Anti-Villain : Vader is generally the former, though he doesn’t mind being the latter when the situation calls for it.
  • Obviously, Sidious is this to Vader. Maul comes to hate him too, and later finishes him.
  • Vader implies to Yaddle that he sees himself as this.
  • In a Jedi Council meeting, Vader vaguely alludes to the events of his fall. Yoda muses that he'd taken the easy path, infuriating Vader, who sneers that it was the hardest choice he'd ever taken. Unfazed, Yoda admits that the choice was insanely hard... but asks if so was the path . Grudgingly, Vader lets go of his wrath.
  • Shmi comes very close to discovering Vader's true identity, something that shocks him to the core, even if she didn't quite get it right. Shmi: He's you, isn't he? You see... who you used to be, in Ani, don't you?
  • The reveal of Sidious and Plagueis to the Jedi Council is basically a big slap in the face to the Order in its entirety. In less than a minute, Vader reveals to the Jedi that the Sith have not only been under their noses for a thousand years, but members of their order have long inserted themselves into the highest echelons of the Republic without them knowing. After spending so long denying their existence, the confirmation is almost too much for the Jedi to bear.
  • Yoda takes it a step forward, wondering how many disguised Sith in hiding he had unknowingly met during his lifetime, and even fears the possibility of them having infiltrated the Jedi at one point. We found out from dialogue between Plagueis and Sidious that they did ; past members of the Order of Bane had been masters serving on the Jedi Council . Not to mention in the Darth Bane trilogy, Darth Zannah was able to waltz right into the temple with the Jedi none the wiser.
  • Backstab Backfire : This time around, Plagueis is prepared for Sidious's attempt to off him, which leads to a fight.
  • Sidious brutally tortures Maul for failing to kill Vader, then outright kills him when Maul delivers Vader's message to him. Plagueis resurrects the Zabrak immediately afterward, but damn ...
  • Zigzagged with Plagueis. On the one hand, the Sith Lord gives Vader his express permission to butcher any and all Sith agents (or Unwitting Pawns ) within the Trade Federation if they do anything detrimental to the Sith cause in the future. On the other hand, under his public persona of Hego Damask, he generally treats his employees well and makes sure they are happy and well-paid...all in the interest of keeping up appearances , of course.
  • Sidious' death sets off a bad chain of events for Nute Gunray, making his actions during the Battle of Naboo very erratic to the point where it begins to endanger his own underlings. It gets to the point where he puts a kill order on his own men in case of a mutiny.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work : Vader's killing of Sebulba. When confronted by Padme, he makes it clear that, though he definitely enjoyed the act, it was very much necessary for a very long list of reasons, the most salient of which is the simple fact that if he hadn't done so, Anakin would have (being cornered in a perfect position to lash out), and he judged it more pressing to remove the threat and prevent Anakin from having blood on his hands rather than worrying for his own or expending unnecessary effort in keeping Sebulba alive.
  • Just by repeatedly trolling Sidious with his mere existence, Vader is able to goad him into attacking Plagueis and thereby putting himself in position to be killed by him . Sidious admits upon realizing this that if he weren't so pissed at being manipulated, he'd be impressed.
  • Vader's ultimate long-term goal regarding the Republic is to basically just sit back and let events unfold on their own before he makes a move. As far as he's concerned, the whole system is so corrupt it will inevitably collapse on its own even without the Sith having to pull any strings, and this way the majority of people will be disillusioned with the idea of the Republic, presumably curtailing anything like the Rebel Alliance from forming when Vader eventually comes to establish the Empire on his terms.
  • Betrayal Insurance : During the Battle of Naboo, it's revealed that an increasingly paranoid Gunray gave orders to his droid commanders to kill his underlings if they try to surrender to the anti-Federation forces without his permission .
  • Beware the Nice Ones : Upon capturing him, Padme comes dangerously close to shooting Gunray in cold blood for everything he's done to her planet.
  • Be Yourself : Vader tells Anakin that, should the boy join the Jedi Order, he should strive to become the Jedi he wants to be, not what the Council wants him to be.
  • Big Damn Heroes : Darth Maul of all people gets one of these, as he is the one to deliver the finishing blow against Palpatine.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality : According to Qui-Gon, Force users tend not to take it too personally when they point lightsabers at one another if the one doing the pointing isn't a threat. It's why Obi-Wan isn't surprised that he got let off with being thrown out of the spaceship into a dune when he accused Vader of killing Anakin and Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan is honestly confused as to why Padme seems concerned.
  • Blunt "Yes" : Vader gives one when questioned if he thinks he can handle a few thousand battle droids by himself.
  • Boring, but Practical : During his fight against the Jedi Order, Sidious is fooled at a critical moment by a simple Jedi Mind Trick .
  • Both Sides Have a Point : Vader admits this about the Empire. On the one hand, the Emperor's obsession with superweapons, his humanocentrism, and his tendency towards big, dramatic gestures are doing horrible things to the Empire and its citizens. On the other, for the most part the Empire is run just fine when it's not being authoritative, and that a good deal of the Rebellion got started even before the atrocities. He accuses them of having rose-tinted glasses about a Republic that was severely flawed even before Palpatine took power.
  • The entire fic from the point Vader arrives on Coruscant and onward is basically dedicated to Vader showing the Jedi just how greatly out of their depth they have become in regards to the Sith threat.
  • The Dark Woman, as per her Legends counterpart, is very prideful and sure of her ability to face down any dark Force user... and is incapacitated by Darth Plagueis before she even has a chance to attack. At the end, she defies the truce set up by Vader to hunt down the Sith, though it is clear that her choice to do so is mainly out of pride rather than altruism.
  • Break Them by Talking : Vader mercilessly rubs it in Maul's face that the latter is not a true Sith, and that his master also has a living master.
  • Broken Pedestal : A very mild example with Obi-Wan. He is a firm believer in the Jedi Order, its code, and what it stands for. But since meeting Vader, he has come to learn about a number of faults and horrendous paths the Jedi have taken throughout its history, including the Jedi Lords and the true backstory of the original Sith Lords. He still believes in the Jedi, but his newfound discoveries have him rethinking certain aspects.
  • Brutal Honesty : Vader is blunt with what he tells.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You : When Vader and Sidious have a mental battle, it ends with Sidious holding his lightsaber to Padme's neck. Vader calls his bluff because he knows Padme is too valuable a pawn to sacrifice at the moment, so Sidious backs off.
  • He has a failsafe built into his lightsabers that prevent others from using them , which explains why Plagueis didn't kill him immediately.
  • He created dozens of droids skilled in lighsaber combat, each with both a hologram projector and a Sith artifact, making it nearly impossible to identify whether they're Sidious or not.
  • He mows the Trade Federation battle droids down like grass.
  • He bests Maul without even needing to draw his lightsaber.
  • When making a staged attack on the Jedi Temple , he is an unstoppable juggernaut.
  • Dark Is Not Evil : While Vader has no intention of giving up the Dark Side or even being a Sith, he doesn't plan to turn the Republic into a totalitarian empire nor exterminate the Jedi, and in fact plans to reform the Sith Order so it'll be less villainous.
  • Dead Man's Switch : During the Final Battle on Naboo, Gunray arms himself with one, programming the battle droids to indiscriminately open fire on the citizens of Naboo if he doesn't periodically check-in with them. Then the droids all get shut down remotely, rendering this moot.
  • Death by Adaptation : Sebulba. In canon, he would go on to survive past both the Clone Wars and the Galactic Empire. Here, he is killed by Vader, after trying to kill Anakin .
  • Democracy Is Flawed : While certain Wide-Eyed Idealists (like Padme and Windu) would strongly disagree, the Republic is a clear and utter mess. Its bureaucracy has become bloated to the point of being insufferable and it's become ineffective at resolving minor disputes. Compounded with the damage that the Order of Bane has done to it over the years, corruption and dissention amongst its premier politicians and figureheads has essentially rotted the Republic from the inside-out. In other words, it's no longer functional . Vader expresses his belief that, once it gets out that a Sith Lord had been manipulating their government, the Republic will collapse into an already inevitable interstellar war.
  • Darth Sidious is killed by Maul and Vader respectively. In Legends , he was brought into Chaos by Empatojayos Brand and the spirits of deceased Jedi after unsuccessfully attempting to possess Han and Leia's child Anakin. In Disney canon, Palpatine's granddaughter Rey used her powers to deflect his Force lightning to kill him .
  • Nute Gunray is shot in self-defense by Rune Haako, rather than being cut down by Vader.
  • Disc-One Final Boss : Interestingly, Darth Sidious. He is the main villain and adversary faced by the main cast during the first half of the Naboo arc. After his death , the significantly less powerful and cowardly Nute Gunray is the final villain to be faced in Naboo's liberation.
  • The Dog Bites Back : Maul is the one to deliver the last blow to Sidious, stabbing his abusive master In the Back to finish him off.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You : At the conclusion of his staged attack on the Jedi Temple , Vader bluntly tells the Jedi that he won't start any further conflicts with the Jedi, but he'll sure as hell finish them.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side : Vader actively strives not to be this, no matter how tempting, because he knows it will make him reckless. Sidious has a much harder time resisting it because he's just that evil.
  • Dual Wielding : Both Plagueis and Sidious engage in dual-blade fencing during their fight.
  • Enemy Civil War : While outright infighting hasn't started yet, aside from a couple of failed desertions and mutinies, there are schisms within the time-displaced Death Squadron — while the Stormtroopers are completely loyal to Vader and the technical staff are willing to go with the flow, many officers are angry about him killing Palpatine and preventing the rise of the Empire as they knew it, and are silently plotting against him for it. Vader is aware of this, but not overly concerned.
  • Every Dark Side user in the galaxy lends Vader their strength during his staged attack on the Jedi Temple because, as Plagueis states, it's forcing the Jedi to acknowledge that the Dark Side is still around and will not be ignored.
  • Plagueis later aids the Jedi against Sidious, although he emphasizes his reason is solely to defeat Sidious.
  • Padme seeks out others who hate the Trade Federation for help in driving them from her planet. One such individual rules what is functionally a planet-wide casino and whom she finds remarkably distasteful.
  • According to a beat cop on Coruscant, some of the really nasty stuff in the lower levels is so bad that the gangs and police will work together to take them out.
  • Vader hates the Trade Federation and the CIS, but he's so offended at how stupid the Battle Droids are he contemplates joining them to at least make them into something not an insult to craftsmen everywhere.
  • Sideous and Vader both facepalm in exasperation when Padme addresses Vader as "Darth," thinking it's his first name. This in the middle of a giant mental battle between the two Sith.
  • Evil Is Petty : Darth Sidious. Plagueis even says that his apprentice has a habit of savoring even the smallest victories a little too much.
  • Face Palm : Both Vader and Sidious mentally do this when Padme assumes that "Darth" is the former's actual name rather than a title.
  • Faking the Dead : During the battle to reclaim Theed Palace, Vader plays possum, lying down and turning off his breathing to trick a large contingent of droids into thinking they've killed him, so that he can investigate the seemingly random area they were protecting after they leave him behind.
  • Pride : he's too egotistical to consider the idea of forming an equal partnership with anyone, no matter how beneficial it might be. In fact, he'd rather have Vader as a Worthy Opponent to have something akin to Kaggath note  A "duel" in which two Sith Lords pit all their assets against one another in an all-out war with.
  • Impatience: this is a flaw he can suppress, but while he can wait to get what he wants, he hates it.
  • Pettiness : he's too much of a sadistic bully to let even the slightest offenses go unpunished, and he savors every victory he obtains no matter how small or how little it matters in the long run.
  • Flawed Prototype : The Anti-Federationists managed to get their hands on the Clamator , a prototype from Kuat Drive Yards. She's a dedicated warship larger and better armed than anything that had been built in a thousand years, but as she's the largest and best armed warship built in a thousand years the designers had failed to make her as powerful as they could have - as they fully expected, since this was just the first step in the eventual development of the Acclamator class.
  • For Science! : Plagueis considers himself a scientist first and foremost, which is why he decides not to directly interfere with Vader's unilateral declaration of a truce between the Jedi and Sith — as a sociological experiment, Plagueis is curious to see how long it'll last.
  • Shimi is freed alongside Anakin.
  • His interest being piqued by what's happened makes Dooku stay with the Jedi for the time being.
  • Palpatine/Sidious is exposed as a Sith and dies long before he could ever become Emperor.
  • Rather than the Jedi helping a small team headed by Padme retake Naboo from the Trade Federation, Vader convinces her to forge an alliance with other anti-Federation factions that launch a full-scale counter-invasion.
  • Anakin is officially made Qui-Gon's Padawan, while Obi-Wan is shuffled off to Dooku to complete his own training.
  • Foregone Conclusion : Plagueis does not believe that the truce between the Jedi and the Sith will last. Not because of the Sith's hatred of the Jedi, however. But rather because of the Jedi's unending bias towards the dark side. We see in the final chapter that his prediction may have some merit.
  • Friendly Enemy : Darth Plagueis ends up developing this rapport with Yarael Poof , of all Jedi.
  • Obi-Wan's experiences with Vader change his views on the dark side and the Sith as whole, but when he senses Sidious for the first time and gets a taste on just how much of an irrevocable monster he is, he is traumatized and shocked that such an embodiment of unimaginable rage and hatred could even exist and still be a sentient being.
  • Padme is utterly repulsed and disbelieving by the lengths Gunray is willing to go to make sure the invasion of Naboo is made legal, including going as far to burn the entirety of Theed.
  • Heel–Face Turn : Vader. He's still a Sith, though.
  • Hourglass Plot : Darth Vader, one of the most feared Sith Lords, for all his power, was nothing more than a puppet to Palpatine and only freeing himself moments before his own sacrifice to save his son . Yet in this new timeline, the puppeteer has become the puppet, with Vader anticipating and exploiting the weakness of the one he used to call master and led him to his demise . On another note, for the first time ever, Darth Vader is finally free, chained to nothing and no one and free to act out of his own accord. It's a good thing that, for all his desire to stay to the Dark Side and even freely admit that he's a Sith, he's more dedicated to legitimately doing good and righting the wrongs of the past , even if he himself doesn't necessarily get to experience he once had.
  • A House Divided : The epilogue makes it clear that many Jedi are not happy about the Order's newfound truce with the Sith. The Dark Woman in particular is already making plans to seek out and eliminate Vader and Plagueis, and Windu has no intention of stopping her.
  • Hypocrite : Averted. While Vader is busy verbally tearing the Jedi a new one for their complacency, he also isn’t afraid to admit that the Sith also have some problems that need to be solved such as infighting and destructive competition.
  • Improperly Paranoid : Sidious with regards to Vader. He's so paranoid about the other Sith's existence that he prematurely betrays Plagueis .
  • Internal Reveal : In Chapter 21, Vader spells out to the Jedi that a Sith Lord has been living on Coruscant right under their noses all along.
  • Vader believes that even with Sidious dead , the Clone Wars (or an equivalent) will still end up happening as the culmination of centuries of systematic problems within the Republic.
  • Jar Jar still manges to somehow survive ridiculous circumstances to the point that Vader questions whether he was born with a blessing from the Force.
  • Despite meeting well over a decade earlier, when young Anakin runs into Ahsoka Tano for the first time, he still nicknames her "Snips."
  • In-Universe Catharsis : After Anakin's slave chip has been disabled, Vader gives him the now-useless remote. For an instant, Qui-Gon detects a great amount of anger and sadness... which bursts into a small star of calm and peace when Anakin destroys the thing.
  • Irony : Darth Vader and Boba Fett , two people who are supposed to be the Jedi's greatest enemies by virtue of being a Sith and Mandalorian respectively, are the galaxy's only hope from plunging into all-out war.
  • Ironic Hell : Plagueis reveals to Vader that he's infected Sidious with a virus that will completely sever him from the Force . Vader himself notes that it might be the worst possible fate for the man.
  • It Amused Me : Plagueis decides to honor Vader’s declaration of peace between the Jedi and the Sith just because he wants to see how long it will last. If it collapses because of his scheming, that would be boring.
  • Just Toying with Them : Sidious eventually realizes to his horror that Plagueis has been tricking him with illusions during their entire fight.
  • Karmic Death : Sidious is killed by his apprentices, Vader and Maul. Plagueis, though only aware of the latter's connection to Sidious, notes how fitting this is.
  • Knight Templar : Vader labels the Jedi as this in general, and he's not entirely wrong.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em : When the Anti-Federation forces start overwhelming the Federation blockade over Naboo, the captain of one of the Lurcehulks decides to surrender, and tries to convince the other captain to do likewise. Unfortunately for him, the ship's droids kill him and his crew to keep fighting.
  • The Last Dance : After being infected with a virus that will sever his connection to the Force by Plagueis and exposed to the Jedi by Vader, Sidious knows he won’t survive the night. He takes the opportunity to let loose with everything he has in order to sell his life dearly.
  • Late to the Realization : It's only after he attempts to kill Plagueis that Sidious realizes that his master never intended to replace him. Plagueis agrees but warns him that it's "too late to deactivate his lightsaber".
  • Let's Get Dangerous! : Vader has been holding back much of his resources while helping the Naboo... Up until Gunray's precautions leave a Droid Control Ship impossible to destroy for the Anti-Federationists and hides, at which point a Star destroyer from Death Squadron finishes the job .
  • Light Is Not Good : Vader makes a frighteningly cogent case for this when comparing the two sides of the Force: if the Dark Side is a stimulant, power and emotion, motion and chaos, the Light Side is a sedative, stillness and emptiness, silence and order, comparing the use of each to a different addiction.
  • Plagueis is so skilled at Force illusions that he makes Sidious wonder if their entire duel even occurred.
  • Master Poof is this, which is how he gets Plageuis to actually talk to him- shared interest over illusion techniques.
  • Mêlée à Trois : Vader is convinced that when civil war inevitably comes to the Republic, there will be numerous factions, not just the two of his timeline.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal : Gunray's increasingly erratic behavior begins to unnerve and endanger the other Federation officials under his command. It all comes to a head when he issues a kill order on any Trade Federation individuals if a mutiny or unauthorized surrender is ever attempted. Rune Haako promptly betrays him and then fatally shoots him in self-defense.
  • As the others get roped into a card game, Obi-Wan initially disapproves before admitting he's rather fond of the particular game.
  • Vader admits that having to explain to everyone in the early years of the Empire that his name is not, in fact, "Darth," was one of the few times that he actually felt awkward after his transformation.
  • When Padme thought that Vader's first name was "Darth", even Sidious facepalmed alongside Vader and this is in the midst of a mental battle between him and Vader.
  • Oh, Crap! : The Jedi Council's reaction when Vader tells them about Sidious and then tears open the Veil of the Dark Side so that they can sense him .
  • Only Sane Man : Rune Haako , who is the only neimoidian in the Trade Federation that hasn't totally lost his shit after Sidious' death . The author acknowledges that any good decision Gunray ever made in canon was because of this guy, so him keeping his head together during the chaos caused by Vader makes sense.
  • Both Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon pull this card when the Jedi question them about their reactions regarding Vader — "Why did you let them on the ship, near the queen," "Why did you not try to fight him," "Why did you let him come to Coruscant," for example. They cite that "Sith Lord acting friendly after showing up after a thousand years of no sign that they exist," was so far out of their realm of what they expected, not even including the invasion that they were in the middle of, that the best they could do is roll with the punches.
  • Vader is also this to Sidious. As far as Palpatine knows, Vader is either a rival apprentice to Plagueis or an outsider from another Sith Order, yet in either case is not operating like a Sith Lord should. More to the point, he knows more about Sidious than anyone should, and is powerful enough to not be threatened by him, all of which completely upends Sidious' plans.
  • Darth Sidious was this for the Jedi in canon, but there, they did not even realize his existence nor the extent of his power until it was too late. Here, the entire order becomes of aware of his existence prematurely thanks to Vader, and are completely thrown off and near-traumatized by the sheer level of dark side power the man radiates, with some even gobsmacked that he is even a sentient being at all.
  • To a small degree played up for amusement, Anakin is this to the creche masters and younglings of the temple — a child powerful in the Force who is not a Jedi Youngling, but was just brought to the temple. The younger students were so fascinated at him that Anakin compared it to "A ship surrounded by Jawas," and Master Phara admitted that it was an accurate comparison.
  • During the battle for Naboo, the Clamator catches the Trade Federation completely by surprise, as not only she's a dedicated warship but the largest and most powerful built in a thousand years. Then, when even the Clamator proves not enough against three Droid Control Ship, the last one explodes and nobody has any idea of what happened beyond Padme's guess that Vader was responsible - and he confirms without elaborating. It was the Thunderflare , a Star Destroyer from Death Squadron that had traveled with Vader back in time .
  • Paranoia Gambit : The Sith in general operate against each other by making them overly paranoid about what other Sith are up to. Vader and Plagueis in particular weaponize Sidious's paranoia against him, Vader by simply being a complete unknown and Plagueis by using his status as a Master of Illusion to make Sidious question whether their entire battle had even happened. The former causes Sidious to betray Plagueis prematurely, while the latter makes it easier for Plagueis to kill his treasonous apprentice.
  • Playing with Fire : Sidious unleashes some Sith Magic during his fight with the Jedi Council to conjure animated blue flames.
  • The Power of Hate : Vader's hatred of Sidious is so great that it enables him to power through Sidious' Force Storm and forcibly close the tear in reality fueling it .
  • Vader urges Padme to be this, suggesting that she should engage in backdoor dealings with less than savory - but powerful – groups that share her contempt for the Trade Federation in order to oppose the Naboo blockade.
  • Darth Vader himself. He's still a Sith Lord and Dark Side user who despises the Jedi Order, but he helps Padme, saves his mother and his younger self from slavery, and tries to make the Jedi (and later Sith) better.
  • Coruscant gangs help the police fend off Cthons, Corridor Ghouls, and other monsters found in the lower levels of Coruscant. When a rookie asks his partner whether the gangs would just attack the police, he's told the last group to do so was murdered by their rivals, because "dead levels don't help anyone".
  • Psychopathic Manchild : Sidious is an entitled, short-tempered brat underneath his superficially charming facade.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech : Vader gives one to the Jedi Council regarding the many failures of the Jedi Order. That said, he does preface it by saying that the Sith's failings are "Many and obvious."
  • When Sod Gert greets Vader by saying it's nice to meet him, Vader internally notes that that's probably the first time anyone's said that to him and meant it.
  • Yoda finds himself saying the Jedi usual farewell to Vader, noting how strange it is for a Jedi Master to earnestly mean a proper farewell to a Sith Lord.
  • Vader finds himself saying "I am sorry" for the first time since becoming a Sith Lord when he finds Padme's sister Sola standing guard over their seriously wounded parents and acknowledges that he can't help them .
  • Realpolitik : Having been inspired by Vader's actions, Yarael Poof cuts a secret truce with Plagueis to ensure a proper peace between Jedi and Sith.
  • Repressive, but Efficient : Vader believes that the empire was this initially, but admits that Palpatine's pettiness, insanity, racism, and growing love for superweapons caused it to go in the other direction.
  • Chapter 27 finally shows us who the mystery tagalong is that accompanied Vader from the future. It's Boba Fett .
  • An even bigger one comes in Chapter 38: the entire Death Squadron fleet time traveled with Vader and Boba. So not only does Vader have a Mandalorian bounty hunter on his side, but his entire loyal Imperial fleet. Though some of the ships, most notably the Executor , are still unaccounted for.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons : Shmi assumes Vader cares for Anakin because the boy reminds Vader of a younger version of himself, unaware that Anakin is a younger version of Vader.
  • Role Called : The title refers to not just Darth Vader himself but his role in defeating the Trade Federation at the Battle of Naboo.
  • When Sidious realizes he can't beat Plagueis, he attempts to flee Coruscant, though Plagueis cuts him off before he can do so.
  • Many of Gunray's officials in the Trade Federation also do this after the invasion of Naboo escalates out of their favor in the wake of Sidious' death .
  • Secret-Keeper : By the end of the story, Darth Plagueis is the only person in the present who knows that Vader is from the future.
  • At one point, when Obi-Wan asks Vader about the origins of the enmity between Jedi and Sith, their conversation resembles the one held between Magnus and Kitten about the nature of the Warp.
  • When Padme, Vader, and Sidious meet in the latter's office, the two Sith Lords have a mental battle that is similar to the theoretical fight scene between Holmes and Moriarty in A Game of Shadows .
  • When Plagueis reveals the depths of his illusions during his battle with Sidious, he asks "When, exactly, Sidious, did you believe I wasn't using my illusions on you?"
  • Sore Loser : Sebulba tries to kill Anakin after losing the podrace to him. Vader is having none of that.
  • Vader is this to all of Sidious' plans, working hard to prevent his rise to power and expose him as a Sith.
  • Then Vader himself is hit with this, when Plagueis defeats Sidious in their duel, only to spare him and make no further moves , which is an outcome Vader didn't see coming.
  • Darth Plagueis ends up outliving Darth Sidious thanks to Vader's meddling, and is still alive and scheming after the entire Naboo mess is resolved.
  • Qui-Gon never fights Maul, and is thus still alive by the end of the story.
  • For that matter, Maul himself escapes after killing his former master and disappears.
  • Stealth Insult : Young Anakin teaches Padme a card game which Vader explains has no victory condition and is merely designed for a group of people to waste a lot of time. The name of the game? Republic-Senate.
  • Taking You with Me : Sidious' final act is to create a Force Storm with intent to have it kill the entirety of Coruscant .
  • Title Drop : Not of the fic itself, but the movie it’s based on. Sidious, when contemplating the way Vader uses the unknown as a weapon, thinks that the most dangerous thing about him is the unknown of what he could be. “A true phantom menace , if you will.”
  • Troll : Vader takes every opportunity to rile up Darth Sidious .
  • Trojan Prisoner : Boba Fett , under an alias, lets himself be captured by the Trade Federation so that he can then break free and help the other prisoners escape as well in order to fight back from within their command ship.
  • Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny : Darth Sidious vs. Darth Plagueis.
  • Vader Breath : Well, it's the Trope Namer himself. It's mitigated though by Vader revealing that he can turn this off and breathe quietly, but it's way less efficient to do it this way. It does allow for stealth and some quiet, though.
  • Villain Respect : After Sidious' death, Maul hands his lightsaber over to Vader and departs with a nod of respect.
  • Villain Takes an Interest : Darth Plagueis is intrigued by Darth Vader, and quickly puts Anakin on his "recruit later" list when he senses the boy's potential.
  • Villain Team-Up : In the first epilogue, Plagueis and Vader come to an agreement, wherein Vader provides Plagueis with the locations of lost Sith artifacts that he and Sidious found over the years, in exchange for Plagueis providing Vader the resources needed to keep Death Squadron maintained and hidden until the Republic inevitably self-destructs and he can make his move.
  • Villainous Breakdown : With Sidious dead , Vader believes that Viceroy Nute Gunray is on the verge of one of these; without Sidious to guide them, the Trade Federation begins to fragment, with many ships in the blockade abandoning Naboo. Come chapter 29, we find out he's not too far off. We see that he has become increasingly paranoid and irrational after having lost contact with Sidious. He outright refuses to believe that Sidious is dead and even with the odds stacked against him, refuses to back out when Vader and Padme threaten him. It seems even his own underlings have grown weary of both him and the occupation.
  • We Can Rule Together : Darth Plagueis sees no problem in making an alliance with Darth Vader. Unlike most villains who do this, it's not just words—he doesn't like the Rule of Two and is genuinely interested in making alliances. Vader agrees in the epilogue.
  • Plagueis manages to fool Sidious with an illusion so thoroughly that he's able to swipe one of Sidious' lightsabers without his apprentice noticing. Instead of just killing Sidious while the latter's guard is down, he ops for a duel to the death. Though it is revealed that Sidious modified his lightsabers to explode if anyone else uses them.
  • And then Plagueis reveals all of the above was yet ANOTHER illusion and that he has been toying with him the entire time.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years : When Vader makes a staged attack on the Jedi Temple, Anakin is the first one to notice that none of the Jedi he cuts down are dead or even seriously injured.
  • Worf Had the Flu : Both Plagueis and Sidious have their ability to use the Force temporarily ruined by the Dark Side flowing out of Vader and returning to the galaxy at large, causing them to sometimes have too much or too little power to work with.
  • Worthy Opponent : Though Sidious is very infuriated when he realized how he was played by Vader, he is also impressed by his actions.
  • Would Hurt a Child : The first thing Sidious does when Vader exposes him to the Jedi is mentally torture the younglings at the temple with nightmarish visions.
  • Would You Like to Hear How They Died? : When Sidious is exposed to the Jedi , he decides to indulge in some Evil Gloating about his actions, including sharing the exact details of how he recently killed Ronhar Kim.
  • Wretched Hive : A senior police officer on Coruscant makes clear to his rookie partner that everything below level 2,000 (out of 5,127) is considered a lost cause so far as law and order go. Any level in the triple digits and under is just plain lost.

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.

Once hyperspace is conquered, the next step is to explore the timeline.  Star Wars Rebels recently opened up a new dimension with the starry sky of the World Between Worlds, a mystical place where all times happen at once. By unlocking the Jedi Temple on Lothal and finely attuning himself to the Force, Ezra Bridger enters this strange space and finds himself able to visit doors into the past and future.

The temple has one last lesson for Ezra, and with it comes a slew of new possibilities for the saga. The voices of Rey, Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and many others from different eras of Star Wars can be heard as Ezra explores the World Between Worlds.

So what are the rules here, and what happens if someone tries to break them? Each doorway indicates a potential space for Ezra to walk into, a potential chance for him to change the course already set in stone … perhaps.

There’s actually a precedent for time travel in the galaxy far, far away. Here’s how the sci-fi concept has worked in Star Wars in the past:

How Time Travel Works in Rebels

The reveal of the World Between Worlds, the place where a Force user can access doorways to other times, is visually linked to the Mortis gods from The Clone Wars . The three aspects of the Force represented by the Mortis gods (light, dark, and balance) are all symbolically connected to the ability to travel in time. Time works a bit differently in the World Between Worlds as it did in the realm of the Force wielders, which I’ll talk about in a minute, but their presence in the painting at the entrance to the chamber indicates that the Jedi Temple on Lothal taps into aspects of the Force more strange, more powerful, and more embodied than the telepathy and telekinesis Ezra has already learned.

His Force abilities and connection to Lothal enable him to enter the World Between Worlds and find a portal to the time in which Ahsoka dueled Darth Vader in the Sith Temple on Malachor in season two. There, voices from the past and future drift through the black-and-white dreamscape. One could imagine that it was the will of the Force which led him to the particular portal behind which Ahsoka is fighting, since the Force has been connecting Ahsoka and Ezra for a long time. Or, it was the will of the plot: Ahsoka later helps rescue Ezra from Emperor Palpatine, who also has access to the in-between plane.

Although Palpatine can threaten their lives within the World Between Worlds, the Force seems very particular about making sure that no one can change anything while inside. Ahsoka returns to the time from which she was pulled, dropping right back into the scene where she disappeared . Or is this non-interference policy a moral choice rather than a physical law?

Ezra almost tests it out himself. He wants to rescue Kanan, and the Force allows him to see a doorway to the time and place where he could do so. Ultimately, the World Between Worlds is a place of emotional catharsis for Ezra. He’s forced to not only relive the traumatic death of his father figure, but also to realize that he has the control and the authority to stop it — and then come to terms with the fact that Kanan’s death was meant to be all along. If Ezra had rescued Kanan, the rest of their found family would have died, possibly trapping Ezra in a time paradox where he himself is both alive and dead.

Ahsoka doesn’t use this scientific argument with Ezra, though. Instead, she focuses on his emotional needs. He should not trade several lives to save one, and he should learn that a Jedi can accept loss without being consumed by grief.

Palpatine seems to have known about the World Between Worlds for a while, since he accessed it himself and sent an Imperial researcher to oversee the ruins. Along with the planet’s ore, it’s one of the reasons the planet Lothal is so important.  Darth Sidious’ knowledge of time travel might be the best proof that the Force does not allow the time stream to be manipulated. If it could be, the Emperor would have changed certain things in the timeline by now.

How Time Travel Works in The Clone Wars

Although time travel was not explicitly used or even introduced into the realm of possibility as much as it recently was in Rebels , the Mortis gods – Father, Daughter, and Son – are shown to exist outside of time in The Clone Wars as well. Their planet exists in an invisible pocket of time and space, technically undetectable even when viewed from a starship nearby. When Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka return from the Mortis realm to the natural world, no time seems to have passed at all since they arrived at the anomalous region of space.

Seasons and days are also distorted on the planet where the Force wielders live. Time passes quickly. With night comes a cold and barren winter and the morning brings an impossibly vibrant spring. The Jedi cannot control this passage of time at all. The Mortis gods do not weaponize it either, inasmuch as their knowledge of the past and future is not a threat.

The veil between different times also seems thin here, allowing Obi-Wan and Ahsoka to have visions of the past and future respectively. However, Anakin’s similar vision turns out to be a trick of the Son, the aspect of the dark side, so it’s hard to say what was the direct influence of the Mortis gods and what was the veil in the time-stream fluttering in that space.

How Time Travel Worked in the Old Expanded Universe (Legends)

Time travel also appeared in the old Expanded Universe (now known as Legends canon) in several different forms, often in the realm of rumor or the unexplained.

In the Ewoks comic book series, a hyperdrive malfunction leads to R2-D2 and C-3PO traveling into the future. In the ancient Sith Order, an artifact called the Darkstaff could create a Force storm that transported its bearer to the future. A few other examples could be found in comic books, including “Tilotny Throws a Shape” by Alan Moore. This story features creatures with godlike powers, reminiscent of the Mortis trio only in that they were similarly powerful.

In the Legacy era, “Flow-walking,” a skill learned by a select few Jedi decades after the events of the Original Trilogy, enabled a person to appear as a disembodied perspective in the past, like a view through a camera into another world. Jacen Solo uses this to visit the Jedi Temple during Order 66. He wants to find out what drove Anakin Skywalker to the dark side in order to justify his own dark side actions and inner turmoil. He is tempted to step into the past and make a change, but such manipulation is impossible. Flow-walking allows for only small changes, which are inevitably caught up in the continuous flow of time and do not change history.

While the effect is similar, the nature of flow-walking is different from the time portals in Rebels . It is described as a Jedi’s ability to access a stream of Force energy, instead of a physical location where the past and future can be opened like doors along a hallway. In both instances, events can’t actually be manipulated or changed.

Flow-walking is used as a way to connect Jacen’s story to the story of the Prequel Trilogy, as well as to show the similarities between Anakin’s fall and Jacen’s own. Does the dark side run in the Skywalker family blood, the scene indirectly asks? Since Jacen’s sister, mother, and uncle remain in the light side of the Force, it doesn’t seem to. Instead, the flow-walking shows the way cycles of peace and war turn and turn — in the Star Wars universe as well as our own.

Time travel in Star Wars? It happened, and Ahsoka did it

Time travel? In Star Wars? It's more likely than you think.

Years after the fall of the Empire, Anakin Skywalker’s former padawan Ahsoka made a surprise return in Season 2 of The Mandalorian on Disney+. Now, Ahsoka is on the verge of embarking on her own journey, in a spinoff series debuting August 22. But for those unfamiliar with her past, her presence in the story here raises questions. First and foremost: how is she still alive? After over 20 years of Imperial rule and Jedi purges, wouldn’t someone have brought her out into the open? If she was around this whole time, then where was she for the entirety of the Original Trilogy? Couldn’t Luke have used her help? As a matter of fact, why didn’t she do anything about Vader?

The answer to all of that involves a concept introduced in Season 4 of the animated series Star Wars: Rebels, 'The World Between Worlds.' But first, a quick catch-up on what brought her there.

How Ahsoka survived

The Wrong Jedi

Part of the reason Ahsoka survived the Jedi Purge is that when it happened, she was no longer a Jedi. In the final seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, shortly before the end of the Clone Wars, Ahsoka stood accused by the Jedi Council for a crime she did not commit. Even after her name was cleared, Ahsoka was disillusioned by the Council’s lack of faith in her, and she chose to leave the temple and walk her own path.

On the day that Anakin fell to the Dark Side and Order 66 was enacted, Ahsoka had returned to the Republic to aid with one final mission. When the clones were activated, it was Anakin’s training, as well as an early warning from a clone named Fives who had inadvertently discovered Order 66 early, which allowed Ahsoka to survive the assault by the clones assigned to her, and even rescue her closest friend within the clone troops, Captain Rex, by disabling his neural implant. Fives and Ahsoka faked their deaths to escape Order 66, and went their separate ways for a time.

As we learn in both the novel Ahsoka, and the Tales of the Jedi animated series, after attempting to build a new life for herself on a farming world, one of the Empire’s Inquisitors arrived to upend her life. Ahsoka fought back, exposing herself and slaying the Inquisitor, and realized she could not longer live on the run. She got in touch with Bail Organa, and worked as a secret agent to help bring together the nascent rebel cells across the Galaxy which would become the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

The Vader encounter

Ahsoka vs. Vader

In Season 2 of Star Wars: Rebels, set a few years before A New Hope, Ahsoka accompanies the young Force sensitive Ezra Bridger to a Sith temple on the planet Malachor – where she finally encounters her former master for the first time as Darth Vader. Ezra is forced to leave Ahsoka behind to her fate, one we wouldn’t get to learn for two more seasons.

It’s in Season 4 that we learn Ahsoka never really walked away from that duel. But nor did she die. Through a buried Jedi temple on Ezra’s homeworld of Lothal, Ezra was able to open a portal in time and space to the duel where Ahsoka had been lost, and pull her into the nowhere realm in which he found himself. Ahsoka Tano had entered The World Between Worlds.

The World Between Worlds

The World Between Worlds Explained

The World Between Worlds only appears in three episodes near the very end of Star Wars: Rebels. We only know its name because one episode, “A World Between Worlds,” apparently tells us. Throughout Star Wars: Rebels, the Empire takes a special interest in the Outer Rim world of Lothal, which the rambunctious Rebel recruit and Jedi in training Ezra Bridger calls home. Ostensibly, it’s been scoped as the site for a new TIE Fighter factory. But in Season 4, we learn the true reason for the Emperor’s interest: Lothal is the site of an ancient Jedi temple which potentially holds the key to accessing any point in time or space.

Solving the riddle of a gateway illustrated by a tableau of the Ghosts of Mortis- three still more enigmatic figures from Star Wars: The Clone Wars representing different aspects of The Force- Ezra was able to penetrate the temple’s sanctum, which appeared to him as a void in space decorated with intersecting bridges of light. Voices from all the Star Wars films, set in past, near future, and even the distant future of the sequels, echoed through the void for Ezra to parse. Tempted by its power to alter any point in time, Ezra is drawn to the moment in the Sith temple where Ahsoka apparently meets her fate, and pulls her through. But before they can make any more changes, Ezra realizes that the gateway he opens goes two ways – the more he uses it, the more chance the Emperor has to take control of it, granting him mastery over time as well as the Galaxy. Ezra and Ahsoka resolve to destroy the temple rather than allow it to fall into the Emperor’s hands.

And that’s how Ahsoka made it through most of the Imperial era, right up until A New Hope. What she was up to during the trilogy itself, well… that’s a story that the Ahsoka series might answer.

Admittedly, the World Between Worlds is a pretty heavy concept to drop in season 4 of an animated TV show which originally ran on Disney XD, a network which no longer produces original programming. Showrunner Dave Filoni has said that, like many of the concepts in Clone Wars and Rebels, the World Between Worlds was developed in conversations with his mentor George Lucas, and was partially inspired by “the wood between the worlds” in CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia.

But even with Lucas’ apparent sign-off, does time travel really belong in Star Wars?

Time travel in Star Wars

Star Wars Droids

To many, introducing the concept of time travel to Star Wars feels like anathema. It’s an element which carries enormous ramifications for the entire timeline, and one which may feel a little more “hard sci-fi” than fans are used to. More Trek than Wars, if you will. But conceptually, time travel has existed within the world of Star Wars since the very first film. You may recall this exchange between C-3PO and Luke Skywalker on Tatooine:

“Is there anything I might do to help?” C-3PO asks.

“No,” Luke says. “Not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest, or teleport me off this rock.”

“I don’t think so, sir,” C-3PO says. “I’m only a droid, and not very knowledgeable about such things. Not on this planet, anyway.”

It’s that qualifier at the end which should give us pause. Such things may not be possible on a backwater world like Tatooine, but the Galaxy is a vast and mysterious place. And in fact, many Star Wars stories from before we even caught a glimpse of the World Between Worlds have evoked time travel – from before the original trilogy was even finished, to mere months before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, refreshing the canon.

The first time travel story in Star Wars, if you can believe it, was written by Watchmen and League of Extraordinary Gentleman author Alan Moore, for a 1982 comic feature in Empire Strikes Back Magazine. The story, “Tilotny Throws a Shape,” introduces a race of omnipotent beings unbound by the traditional constraints of time or space. In their galavanting across the mortal plane, they send a cadre of Stormtroopers pursuing Princess Leia 8,000 years into the past. This means that time travel has technically been a part of Star Wars longer than Ewoks.

Speaking of Ewoks, however, perhaps the most significant time travel story up until the Ahsoka affair was a 1986 crossover between Droids and Ewoks, two comic book tie-ins to animated series of the same name. Bringing these two titles together was an obvious bit of synergy. But the problem was that Droids was set 15 years before A New Hope, whereas Ewoks was set right before Return of the Jedi. Author David Manak gets around this with a simple plot device that carries enormous ramifications: a botched entry into hyperspace sends the droids hurtling temporarily forward through time, where they encounter the Ewoks on Endor. The droids eventually return to their own time, mystifying the Ewoks… and, perhaps, explaining why the next time they encounter C-3PO in Return of the Jedi, he’s revered as a god.

In a 2002 Star Wars Tales comic, “The Secret of Tet-Ami,” Mace Windu encounters an artifact which can send him back in time by millennia. In the 2008 novel Legacy of the Force, Jacen Solo, son of Han and Leia, learns “flow-walking,” an arcane Force technique which allows one to project themselves backwards or forwards through time. Even in the 2012 novel Darth Plagueis, Palpatine’s master speculates that there may be a Sith technique to travel through time, but he has not yet cracked its secrets.

Before the current state of Star Wars continuity, there wasn’t just one way to travel through time, but half a dozen. The World Between Worlds may seem like a radical departure for Star Wars, but it’s ultimately a streamlining of a concept which has always been a part of the Galaxy… and one which hews closer to the themes of its mystic elements that Lucas and his collaborators have been sharing with us from the very beginning.

Through The Force, everything is connected. Even time.

This article details a subject that falls under the Legends brand.

Time travel referred to travel from one point in time to another, analogous to travel from point to point in realspace or hyperspace . It does not generally refer to a body's natural experience of the flow of time along with the rest of the universe; rather, it refers to travel to the past against the natural flow of time, or travel to the future at a rate faster than that of the rest of the universe.

While time travel was an exceedingly rare phenomenon, a few cases were partially documented. No record of deliberate, physical time travel is known—all known cases involved unusual hyperdrive malfunctions, the effects of the Force , or similar exotic events.

Description [ ]

The term time travel describes the concept of moving between different points in time, either traveling from the present to the future without experiencing the intervening period, or shifting backward in time to the past. Time travel was a rare phenomenon, but it was achieved on several occasions, mostly by accident. The known incidents mostly involved people or objects traveling to the future, [1] [4] [7] however, several occurrences of time travel to the past were also documented. [6] [10]

Methods of time traveling [ ]

Though most variations of time travel were discovered accidentally, at least one method of traveling to the future at a seemingly faster rate was widely known in the galaxy. Time dilation—though not strictly defined as time traveling, as there was no actual "skipping" over any period in time—was a phenomena that caused time to flow differently for two observers due to them being in relative motion to each other. This way, a period of time that lasted several hours from one person's point of view could take days and even years from the other person's perspective. Because of the high velocity of hyperspace travel, time dilation was a common side-effect of it, and the ship traveling in hyperspace would normally move forward in time faster than the rest of the galaxy . To counteract this effect, relativistic shielding was installed aboard hyperspace-capable starships, which aligned the hyperspace-traveling object's time perception with that of the outside world. The shielding , however, was not perfect and could malfunction in some rare cases, leaving the person inside the starship open to the effects of time dilation. [4]

As an extension of the above effect of hyperspace, a malfunctioning hyperdrive could open an unstable hyperspace tunnel leading to another time frame, [1] and even to a different part of the galaxy. [7] In addition to hyperspace travel, time dilation could be achieved by entering a large mass of black holes with high gravitational fields, such as the ones that formed the Tyus Cluster . Provided that the traveler survived the dangerous trip, he could virtually emerge from the anomaly at any future time period, as time moved very fast at the center of the mass, to the point that it appeared not to exist at all. [5] There were also several items that allowed time travel. The Darkstaff was a powerful and seemingly sentient Sith artifact , which power could be possessed by a Force-sensitive to create a Force storm leading to another time period. [2] Another artifact, the Orb of Passage , was implied to control the flow of time; it was discovered on the planet Benja-Rihn and kept by the Jedi Order . [6] Finally, it was rumored that the Jerni civilization used the so-called Eternity Crystal to reset the timeline in case of a major crisis. [9]

Some species, such as the Bedlam Spirits , also had the power to manipulate time, and even claimed that they had "invented" it. [10] Two distinct usages of the Force to travel in time were also known. The first was the simple will of the Force, as it could bind two individuals together, allowing them to relive the past in their last moments, though retaining all their memories of the future events. [12] The other was a rare Force power used by the Aing-Tii monks called flow-walking . It allowed one to see the past and the future, though they could not change anything there, except for leaving an imprint of themselves in the Force. [13]

History [ ]

Confirmed cases [ ], the flight of the harbinger [ ].

Relin-Crosscurrent

Relin Druur caused a hyperspace jump to span five millennia by sabotaging the hyperdrive of the Harbinger.

In 5000 BBY , during the Great Hyperspace War , Jedi Master Relin Druur and his Padawan Drev Hassin tracked the Sith dreadnaught Harbinger , captained by Druur's Jedi apprentice–turned– Sith Lord Saes Rrogon , to the Phaegon system . Druur infiltrated the Harbinger and sabotaged the ship's hyperdrive . Druur then dueled Rrogon and fled the Harbinger aboard an escape pod . The Harbinger fled into hyperspace using its damaged hyperdrive, causing both the Harbinger and Druur's escape pod to travel through time to the year 41.5 ABY . [1]

Darth Rivan and the Darkstaff [ ]

During the New Sith Wars , the Sith Lord Darth Rivan had strange dreams about being called by the artifact known only as the Darkstaff and tracked it down to Almas in the Cularin system . According to Rivan's dreams, the Darkstaff had already caused some ancient tragedy in the Cularin system, and had been hidden away to prevent any further catastrophe. Rivan believed that the destruction of the planet Oblis , which created the Cularin asteroid belt and a nexus of dark side power, was the aftermath of this event. Rivan believed that the Darkstaff drew him there, hoping to use him as a way to leave the system. [2] Having consolidated an army of darksiders , Rivan settled on Almas, erecting a fortress there, where he began learning the mysteries of the dark side of the Force. [17] Further investigation led Rivan to believe that the Darkstaff was not intentionally created, but was rather the byproduct of another experiment. [2]

Darkstaff

The Darkstaff, a Sith artifact, caused the Cularin system to jump forward in time by ten years.

Measuring a meter in length and four centimeters in diameter, the Darkstaff seemed to consume any light around it. It also consumed any Force energy in the vicinity, literally feeding on the Force. The Darkstaff wanted to be discovered by Rivan so that he could use it as a weapon against his enemies, so it invaded his dreams. Its release would allow the Darkstaff to gain power, both for itself and over Rivan, until it eventually consumed Rivan himself. [2] Rivan initially refused to go in search of the artifact, fearing that its release would cause great damage to the galaxy. However, when the Jedi assaulted Almas, he obtained the Darkstaff and it created a Force storm that swept him through time and space to the planet Ruusan , during the battles between the Jedi Army of Light and the Sith Brotherhood of Darkness several centuries later. There, with his Force power drained by the Darkstaff, he was easily slain by a Force-sensitive warrior. [18]

Centuries later, Darth Rivan's writings were discovered by the Jedi Knights who built the Almas Academy . Word of the Darkstaff reached the ears of the smuggler Len Markus , who set out to search for it. Markus was observed removing something from the Cularin system's asteroid belt , an event which preceded the appearance of strange creatures hiding among the asteroids. Shortly after the Invasion of Naboo , the Cularin system disappeared for several years, before reappearing just as suddenly during the Clone Wars , with its inhabitants not experiencing the passage of time. It was believed that Markus found the Darkstaff, and that its release from captivity was the cause of the entire Cularin system's shift in time. [2]

Bosbit Matarcher, the 225-year-old man [ ]

Bosbit Matarcher

Bosbit Matarcher, the "225 year old man"

In 212 BBY , the Human male Bosbit Matarcher engaged the hyperdrive on his newly purchased Delemedian starhopper , intending to take a short trip from his homeworld of Delemede . Due to faulty relativistic shielding , what he experienced as a two-hour trip took 190 years from the perspective of the rest of the galaxy . His experiences brought him brief notoriety when he arrived in 22 BBY , resulting in a HoloNet News interview. Matarcher took the experience in stride, as his run-down homeworld had become prosperous in the meantime. However, he decided to let someone else fly him home. [4]

Matarcher's trip was not strictly defined as time "travel" to the future, however, as he did not "skip over" any period of time. Instead, time merely passed in a distorted manner for him due to the well-known effects of time dilation. [4]

Kinnin Vo-Shay's escape from the Tyus Cluster [ ]

Renowned gambler Kinnin Vo-Shay 's experiences were similar to those of Bosbit Matarcher. Circa 50 BBY , Vo-Shay's ship, the Ashanda Ray , was caught in the Tyus Cluster , a mass of black holes . Vo-Shay would have died, crushed in a black hole with his ship like many travelers before him. However, one of the Tyus Cluster's previous victims was the Jedi Master Aryzah , who had managed to survive the destruction of her body as a Force ghost . She made contact with the slightly Force-sensitive Vo-Shay, and helped him fly the Ashanda Ray out of the cluster. [5]

However, the high gravitational fields of the region had caused significant time dilation. In Vo-Shay's words, "at the center of that mass of ugly black holes, time was nonexistent." When Vo-Shay and Aryzah escaped the cluster, he found that some fifty years had passed for the rest of the Galaxy since Vo-Shay's disappearance. [5]

The secret of Tet-Ami [ ]

Tet-ami

The Orb of Passage is activated.

In the last decades of the Galactic Republic , the Temple of Tet-Ami on Benja-Rihn was the subject of much speculation. Built some four thousand years earlier , the temple commemorated a great hero called Tet-Ami , the Time Guardian, who saved the armies of the capital city Carthas from a plague of insect-like beasts in an epic battle. The temple contained a statue of Tet-Ami, holding an artifact called the " Orb of Passage " which was said to control the flow of time . Sometime after the temple's construction, the orb was secretly taken by the Jedi Order, and the temple was lost. Just as the rediscovered temple was about to be excavated by an archaeological dig, the Jedi High Council sent Mace Windu to secretly enter the temple. His mission was to place the orb into the outstretched hand of the statue of Tet-Ami before the archaeologists arrived. Windu had no trouble entering the cave without being seen, and easily fought off a few ancient battle droids who guarded the temple's inner sanctum. He was surprised, however, to find that Tet-Ami's statue resembled him. [6]

Even more surprising was what happened when Windu placed the orb in the statue's hand. Windu was sent backwards in time, appearing on a battlefield just as the Carthasian armies were about to be attacked. Windu joined the fight, and turned the tide of battle. After spending four days in the past, he returned to his own time period, arriving just as the archaeologists entered the temple. When he returned to Coruscant , Yoda revealed to Windu that the Jedi Council had long known the secrets of Tet-Ami, and were simply waiting for the orb's energies to recharge, and for a Jedi Knight named Mace Windu to join the order, take the Orb of Passage back to Carthas, and win the battle. Thus, the time paradox was neatly resolved. [6]

The Sooma/Alzar incident [ ]

While working as diplomatic couriers around 15 BBY , the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO were assigned to escort the child Prince Plooz from the planet Sooma to his home world of Alzar . Along the way, their ship was attacked by the forces of General Sludd , a renegade from Alzar who was plotting to kill the prince in order to start a war which would allow him to conquer both planets. In an effort to escape, R2-D2 engaged the hyperdrive even though Prince Plooz, in an effort to help, had damaged the antimatter power systems. The droids and the prince jumped to hyperspace just as Sludd's electron torpedoes detonated. Whether because of the damage to the hyperdrive power systems, the explosion of the nearby electron torpedoes, or both, their ship came out of hyperspace in a starless void. Their only apparent exit was a rift which took them to the Endor system —but when they went through the rift, they discovered that they had not only traveled to another system, but to another time. [7]

Plooz, believing himself to be in his home system, ran away from his caretakers in an escape pod which took him to the forest moon of Endor . [7] After some adventures on Endor, where R2-D2 and C-3PO met the Ewoks of Bright Tree Village and rescued the royal toddler from a group of Duloks led by King Gorneesh , the droids and the prince returned to their ship and went back through the time rift. They arrived only minutes after they left, escaped Sludd's forces, and brought the prince back to Alzar safely. [19]

While C-3PO and R2-D2's readings on arrival in the Endor system implied that they had traveled anywhere from ten to one hundred years into the future, [20] the Ewoks and Duloks they met on Endor included such figures as Wicket W. Warrick and Chief Chirpa who participated in the Battle of Endor . [7] When C-3PO returned to Endor in 4 ABY , he did not seem to recognize any of the Ewoks he had met previously, though memories of the golden droid's previous, seemingly supernatural appearance affected the Ewoks' worshipful attitude towards him. [20] [21]

The Bedlam Spirits and Princess Leia [ ]

OrganaBedlamSpirits-TilotnyThrowsAShape

Leia Organa encounters Tilotny and the other spirits.

At another time during the Galactic Civil War , Princess Leia Organa , fleeing from the Empire , crashed on an unknown planet . There, she discovered what seemed to be the remains of stormtroopers who had been dead for many thousands of years. [10]

Before she could investigate further, however, she was chased by three stormtroopers and discovered a group of "spirits"— Tilotny , Horliss-Horliss , Splendid Ap , and Cold Danda Sine —who had immense powers, capable of shaping space and time. While the spirits were in the middle of a conversation, they noticed Leia and the stormtroopers who had been chasing her. The spirits decided to "play" with the four Humans , and managed to kill all of them in the process. [10]

Once they were finished, though, Splendid Ap was tasked with returning the four beings to normal. Ap resurrected the three stormtroopers, but not having a concept of time, also transported them back 8,000 years in the past ; these were the stormtroopers whose remains Leia had encountered when she crashed. Leia, however, escaped the stormtroopers' fate and was restored just as she had been previously in the correct time. [10]

Lak Sivrak's experience [ ]

In 0 BBY , Lak Sivrak , a Shistavanen scout who had left the Imperial Survey Corps , met the Lamproid Dice Ibegon in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina in Mos Eisley . Coincidentally, they met on the same day Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi contacted Han Solo and Chewbacca to arrange passage to Alderaan on the Millennium Falcon . Ibegon recruited Sivrak into the Rebel Alliance and the two fell in love. The couple was parted when Ibegon died in Sivrak's arms during the Battle of Hoth . Sivrak continued to fight with the Alliance, until he too was killed during the Battle of Endor . In his last moments, Sivrak remembered pivotal moments of his life, including his lover's death and the day he and Ibegon saw Skywalker and Kenobi enter Chalmun's Cantina. He was guided in these reminiscences by Ibegon's spirit , which took him to earlier points in his life through the Force . During these travels, Sivrak retained his memories and thus could predict what would happen next. Though he mostly experienced events during which he was present, one trip took Sivrak to Chalmun's Cantina in the aftermath of Jabba the Hutt's death and the subsequent rebellion against the Empire which occurred after Sivrak's death. Eventually, Sivrak's travels ended when he realized that the Force had binded him and Ibegon together, letting them experience these events one more time. Reunited in spirit, the lovers observed the celebrations of the Empire's defeat on the moon of Endor. [12]

Flow-walking [ ]

Jacen Solo learned a Force power called " flow-walking " from the Aing-Tii . This ability allowed him to not only view the past and future, but also leave an imprint of himself there. He used this power in 35 ABY to witness the crash of the Tachyon Flier in 27 ABY , and leave an imprint of himself for his mother, Leia Organa Solo, to follow. [13]

In 40 ABY , Jacen flow-walked two more times, this time to the Jedi Temple to observe the fall of his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker . [23]

Ben Skywalker used flow-walking to witness Jacen while he learned the ability from the Aing-Tii. [15]

Alleged cases [ ]

Darth Plagueis had read accounts of Dark Lords who had the ability to transport themselves through time and space. While he never succeeding in replicating the ability [3] Plagueis did believe that, through the Aperion , time travel was possible. [24]

Luke Skywalker's first meeting with his father [ ]

In 9 BBY , young Luke Skywalker ran away from home after an argument with his uncle and guardian Owen Lars . The disagreement stemmed from Lars' refusal to give his nephew any more information about Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker (by then known as Darth Vader.) [8]

As Luke wandered into the Tatooine desert , he became lost in a sudden sandstorm . Soon after seeing a vision of a tall dark figure, he met a boy around his age calling himself "Annie." Though Luke did not realize it, he was speaking to his father as he was in another time. The two boys realized they had much in common: both were natural pilots, both wanted to leave Tatooine someday, both could sense events before they happened, and neither one knew their father. [8]

Discovering the body of a Tusken Raider buried in the sand, the boys took a gaffi stick from the corpse and sought shelter in a nearby cave. A pack of womp rats drove them back out into the storm, where they stumbled upon an R5-series astromech droid . Annie rigged up the astromech's motivator to explode, sending up a flare. Instead of attracting rescue, the flare attracted a krayt dragon , which attacked the two boys. Losing sight of Annie, Luke threw the gaffi stick into the throat of the dragon, killing it. Luke fell unconscious, and was later found by his uncle and a rescue party. While there was no sign of the krayt dragon or Annie, Luke was convinced that his experiences were more than just a dream. [8]

The Eternity Crystal hoax [ ]

EternityCrystal-DKD

A picture from an image tape shows the Eternity Crystal in use.

During the Galactic Civil War , Luke Skywalker came across an abandoned spacecraft of unknown origins while on a reconnaissance mission for the Rebel Alliance . A set of image tapes recovered from the derelict, once decoded, showed that the ship was an artifact of the extinct Jerni civilization. These tapes also talked about an artifact called the " Eternity Crystal ," used by the long-lost Jerni civilization to control the flow of time. According to the tapes, this power was used to prevent conflicts and crises within their society by reversing their history and starting again on a different path. The tape also gave the location of the crystal, in a vault near Adony Station on the planet Jerne . [9]

The Rebel leadership quickly realized that such power could be used to their advantage in the war—for that matter, it could be used to prevent the rise of the Galactic Empire and stop the war from even starting. Luke, together with his droid R2-D2 and Princess Leia Organa , was sent on a mission to Jerne to investigate. [9]

As it turned out, the "Jerni" ship and the image tapes on board were fakes created by Imperial technicians under the orders of Darth Vader. The story of the Eternity Crystal was only the bait for a trap intended for Princess Leia, who Vader knew would want to change history to bring back her beloved Alderaan . As soon as they arrived on Jerne, the three Rebels were immediately met with opposition from the waiting Imperial garrison. They were forced to ask a group of local guerrillas and bandits led by Meeka Reen for assistance, but Reen betrayed them in an attempt to take the crystal for herself. Luckily for Skywalker and Organa, this meant Reen and her henchmen were killed by the Empire's traps, while the Rebels escaped Jerne unharmed by stealing Lord Vader's TIE/sh VIP shuttle . [9]

Sam Heggs's account [ ]

Hegg

Sam Heggs bids farewell to his younger self on Nimba Five, as recounted by himself to Jeet Travis.

In 3 ABY , a spacer and hunter named Sam Heggs was traveling through Mos Eisley , where he told an odd story to a bounty hunter named Jeet Travis . [11]

Heggs claimed that while on Nimba Five hunting bemis , he came across a nest of grumph eggs . Soon afterward, though it was the middle of Nimba Five's long winter , he found a lush jungle nearby. In the jungle, he came across a young man being chased by a grumph. Heggs was unable to affect anything in the jungle in order to help the young man, though he was able to communicate with him. However, he somehow discovered that he was viewing an incident in the past, but that changes he made in the present would go backwards in time. Apparently, the grumph was experiencing time in reverse, so destroying an egg in the present would cause it not to exist in the past. Heggs began destroying the grumph eggs, eventually destroying the egg which erased the grumph which menaced the young man. Heggs determined that the young man was himself in an earlier time period, since he recognized his initials on the young man's backpack. [11]

Other than Heggs's story and the sack of grumph eggs he brought with him to Mos Eisley, no evidence of this incident exists. It may only have been a nonsensical story which Heggs used to separate Travis from his bottle of Vaschean rye . [11]

Behind the scenes [ ]

Although time travel is central in many works of science fiction , it generally plays a minor role in Star Wars works. However, time travel does have rare appearances in the Expanded Universe . Time travel was also a plot device used in Alien Exodus , a canceled and thus non-canonical novel. In Alien Exodus , the humans of the Star Wars galaxy are revealed to be the descendants of a group of refugees from Earth whose ship accidentally traveled through a wormhole. This wormhole took them not just to another galaxy, but to another time, billions of years in the past: in other words, they found themselves "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." [ source? ]

Another non-canon story which links the Star Wars universe with Earth is " Into the Great Unknown " part of Star Wars Tales 19 . In this story, a hyperspace accident leads Han Solo and Chewbacca to crash the Millennium Falcon on an unknown planet which is obviously Earth. 126 years later, the wreckage and Han Solo's body are discovered by Indiana Jones . Depending on how long ago "a long time ago" is assumed to be, the Falcon ' s trip in this story may also have involved time travel. In any case, since Han Solo dies in the story, Into the Great Unknown is non-canon. [ source? ]

Garland Theater, with the help of Jedi Alliance, to host ‘Star Wars’ celebration on Saturday

May the fourth be with you.

The historic Garland Theater will host a special event for “Star Wars” fans Saturday, serving themed food and beverages and hosting a showing of “Rogue One,” a 2016 prequel to the original “Star Wars” movie released in 1977.

People have been celebrating an unofficial Star Wars Day on May 4 for years, said Tyler Arnold, co-owner of the Garland Theater and the Jedi Alliance, an arcade and toy museum. All the original “Star Wars” films were released in May and the phrase “May the fourth be with you” is a play on the often-quoted “May the force be with you.”

“Since ‘Star Wars’ came out in 1977 it has become a cultural phenomenon,” he said. “It keeps growing more and more with each generation.”

Arnold has been hosting May 4 events at the Jedi Alliance for years. Last year, he put it on at the Garland in an effort to help the previous owner keep the theater afloat.

“Last year it sold out,” he said.

In addition to the “Star Wars” movies being fun to watch, they also changed the movie business. The original movie was the first to have a toy line tie-in and the invention of the VCR allowed people to buy a copy to keep and rewatch as often as they wanted.

“It really changed our society,” he said. “In 1977 they thought it was going to be a flop. Instead it was hugely popular.”

Those attending the Star Wars Day event are encouraged to come in costume and participate in a costume contest. The winner will be given reserved seating in the balcony for the movie of their choice, Arnold said.

Arnold made the decision to show “Rogue One” because lead actress Felicity Jones is in Spokane filming a movie. He’s made several attempts to reach out to her to invite her to the event.

“It’s a gamble,” he said. “Maybe we can get her to come in, maybe we can’t. How awesome would it be if we can get her to show up?”

Whether the actress comes or not, “Rogue One” is a great movie, Arnold said.

“It’s the best of the new movies,” he said.

The event will include a vintage poster display, photo opportunities with “Star Wars” characters and prizes. People can also silkscreen their own T-shirt.

“I’m trying to make a whole spectacle about it,” Arnold said.

Specialty food and beverages will be available for purchase. In honor of the event, Garland Brew Werks has created “Guava the Hopp,” a pink guava Hazy IPA. The drink is described as “a juicy, tropical Hazy IPA packed with more flavor than you can smuggle onto the Millennium Falcon.”

The menu also includes Bon Bon Lightsaber Bellinis, a mix of peaches and Prosecco. For a nonalcohol option, the Garland Brew Werks also created the “Blue Bantha” raspberry soda, dubbed the official drink of the Kessel run.

Also being served is Wampa Fur (fresh cotton candy), Salacious B. Crumbs (carrot cake cookie sandwich), Nien Num Nums (chocolate chip cooking sandwich) and scruffy looking nerf herders (hot dogs with a choice of toppings, including sauerkraut, relish and deli mustards).

Arnold said he expects to keep hosting Star Wars Day events at the Garland for the foreseeable future.

“We’re going to do this every year, as long as we’re involved,” he said.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the film begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available online at garlandtheater.com . Arnold said he expects the 500 seats for the event to sell out and said buying tickets in advance is recommended.

What to expect when visiting Disneyland in May

Ways to save money at disneyland, beware of crowds.

For a brief period this month, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, is bringing together a trifecta of entertainment across both of its theme parks.

Disneyland regularly hosts special festivals at the park for Halloween and other holidays, but this is one of the rare times of the year when visitors can experience two festivals at once.

This year’s Pixar Fest and Seasons of the Force feature two beloved franchises — Pixar and Star Wars — through over-the-top food and meet-and-greets with characters never seen before in the parks. Unique entertainment options include a fireworks show that depending on where you view it is either Pixar- or Star Wars-themed with two separate soundtracks.

And that’s not all. One of Disney’s most iconic nighttime shows, “Fantasmic!,” returns in May.

Plus, there’s a ticket offer for Southern California residents that could make experiencing this somewhat affordable — at least by Disney standards.

Pixar Fest kicks off

From now through Aug. 4, Disneyland Resort is sporting a new makeover for Pixar Fest, a festival devoted to films made by the company’s computer-animation subsidiary, Pixar Animation Studios. NerdWallet got an inside look during a press event for the festival's kickoff.

As part of Pixar Fest, there’s an abundance of Pixar-themed entertainment, including a dance party and a new daytime parade. Character meet-and-greets will include Pixar characters such as Wade and Ember from “Elemental" for the first time at the Disneyland Resort.

You’ll also see decorations throughout both theme parks, including a 25-foot tall sculpture of the iconic Pixar Ball outside Disneyland’s main gate.

One of the big draws of Disney festivals is the food. For example, you might see Mr. Potato Head-inspired churros, which top the iconic snack with, yes, potato chips.

On May 10, a series of marketplace stands will open at Disney California Adventure Park with even more limited-time food offerings based on some of Pixar’s newer films, including Hanger Management inspired by “Inside Out.”

Then, there are the fireworks. Tinker Bell is the usual star of Disney fireworks shows, but during Pixar Fest, Buzz takes the torch and flies across the sky between Matterhorn Bobsleds and Sleeping Beauty Castle. Later, Carl and Ellie’s house featured in “Up” floats above the castle.

Season of the Force continues

For fans who prefer Chewbacca over Sulley as their hairy creature of choice, May also features a Star Wars-themed festival called Season of the Force. Season of the Force runs through June 2, providing about a month where both festivals overlap.

“The two festivals aren’t actually intended to interact with each other,” says Tracy Halas, creative director at Disney Live Entertainment. “It’s really just an opportunity to share everything and have something for everybody at the parks.”

And there are plenty of Star Wars fans, indeed. After all, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still holds the title of highest-grossing film of all time in the domestic market, according to Box Office Mojo.

Among the festival's star attractions is a temporary retheming of the Space Mountain ride to Hyperspace Mountain, where the soundtrack now includes the films’ iconic theme song. There’s also Star Wars-themed food, including a bantha burger based on the furry, horned mammals that roam the fictional planet of Tatooine.

While those Disneyland special events spotlight two of Disney’s biggest franchises, that’s still not the only reason why May could be the best month for Disneyland fans.

Fantasmic! returns

“Fantasmic!”, a nighttime show at Disneyland involving costumed characters, stunts and pyrotechnics, went dark after a massive, fire-breathing dragon prop fell victim to its own flames during a live performance in April 2023. That performance was cut short, marking the last show for more than a year. That changes on May 24, when the show returns.

Southern California resident tickets

Disney uses variable pricing on its theme park tickets , where higher-demand days command higher prices. Disneyland prices its one-day admission tickets across seven tiers, ranging from Tier 0 (least expensive) to Tier 6 (most expensive).

The average single-day ticket price in May is $162, about 7.4% cheaper than July’s average of $175, according to a NerdWallet analysis of Disney ticket prices.

For locals, a limited-time ticket option offers even lower prices. Southern California residents can purchase a three-day ticket package that costs $225 for weekday tickets ($75 per day) or $275 ($92 per day) for the version that offers weekend access, too.

The last day to use tickets sold through that promotion is June 2.

Hotel discounts

Then, there's another offer available to anyone — not just local residents — that could make trips more affordable. Hotel stays on Sunday through Thursday nights are as much as 15% off for trips booked via Disney's website through June 3 and completed by June 7.

Hotel prices can be the biggest cost in a Disneyland trip — more so than other expenses like food and theme park tickets. The weeknight hotel deal could make them more affordable. Plus, weekday theme park tickets tend to be cheaper than weekends, adding to the savings.

But for all the goodness set for May, you might have to contend with crowds. The ticket prices of Fantasmic!'s reopening weekend falls into the highest pricing tier, suggesting Disney is bracing for big crowds on that weekend.

High school students also descend upon Disney California Adventure on certain nights in May and June for Grad Nite. There may be bigger daytime crowds if students arrive early, and the park will close earlier than usual. This year’s Grad Nites are set for May 10, 14, 15, 17, 19, 22, 23, 28 and 31, as well as June 2, 5, 7, 9, 12 and 14.

Plus, with Southern California resident tickets expiring on June 2 and the summer blackout dates starting May 31 for certain annual pass holders, many people might squeeze in a visit in May.
