Sunshine Tour's Big Easy Tour season schedule released

Following the successful return of the Altron Big Easy Tour to the local golfing scene last year, the Sunshine Tour has released a 12-tournament schedule for the 2023/24 season.

This is an increase of two tournaments more than last year’s schedule, thereby creating more opportunities for the players to compete at a high level.

Having secured the sponsorship of IT solutions giant Altron when the Tour returned under the commissioning of professional golf’s mother body, the Sunshine Tour, the second season of this developmental tour begins this July.

With each tournament carrying a total of R150 000 and the final R300 000 in prize money, the first event tees off on the Bushwillow layout at Randpark Golf Club on July 4 while the second will be played at Reading Country Club in the East Rand, Gauteng, a week later.

The historic Soweto Country Club will host the third event of the season from August 1 before Kyalami Country Club gets its own piece of professional golf action a month later. The two venues along with Blue Valley Golf Estate are hosting Altron Big Easy Tour events for the second successive time each after they played hosts last year. The year will close off with Blue Valley hosting the fifth tournament of the season before the Christmas break in November.

In the new year, Dainfern Country Club will host the sixth event in the second week of January while Waterkloof Golf Club in Pretoria will be the next destination. The East Rand will be the next stop as Benoni Country Club hosts the seventh event before the playoffs.

Just as it was in the previous season, Centurion Country Club returns to the calendar and will again host the playoffs early in April before the season-ending event returns to Country Club Johannesburg – Rocklands for the grand finale which carries R300 000 in prize money. The two venues for the new tournaments are yet to be confirmed but will certainly be held in Gauteng too.

“The rerun of the Altron Big Easy Tour to the main golfing scene last year proved to be a great success for the Tour and our sponsor,” said Sunshine Tour Tournament Director Ludwick Manyama.

“Through a tough period economically, our main sponsors, Altron, were able to see our vision of turning this developmental tour into a professional series which benefited our players immensely. We had a full schedule with 10 events and this season won’t be much different.

“We anticipate a total of 12 tournaments for this season to provide further playing opportunities for the players, especially those who aren’t eligible to play on the main Sunshine Tour circuit. We are grateful to our sponsors because their contributions help us realise our vision of making golf accessible.”

The Big Easy Tour was founded in 2011 and enjoys the support of Ernie Els among other greats.

Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour announce new events

The Sunshine Tour has strengthened its global partnership with the DP World Tour with increased prize money and the announcement of two new tournaments and four Challenge Tour events on the schedule in 2023.

The two new DP World Tour events will begin with the $1.5-million SDC Championship to be played at St Francis Links in the Eastern Cape from 16-19 March.

SDC has grown its commitment to the Sunshine Tour following its debut as a sponsor of a Challenge Tour co-sanctioned event in 2022 and will now be a title partner of events on both the DP World Tour and Challenge Tour schedules in South Africa in 2023.

This will be followed by the $1.5-million Jonsson Workwear Open, which will be played at Steyn City in Johannesburg from 23-26 March. Jonsson Workwear has also grown its commitment to the Sunshine Tour from a Challenge Tour event in 2022 to a major DP World Tour event in 2023. This also marks the second year that Steyn City will host a DP World Tour event.

Both these tournaments will take on even greater significance on the global stage as they offer Ryder Cup points to the European professionals competing in a Ryder Cup year.

They join this week’s Joburg Open at Houghton Golf Club, the Investec South African Open Championship (1-4 December), the Alfred Dunhill Championship (8-11 December) and the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open (15-18 December) to make it six co-sanctioned events between the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour on the latter’s 2023 Race to Dubai.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our longstanding relationship with the Sunshine Tour by adding these two new co-sanctioned tournaments that significantly enhance what has always been a popular destination for our members,” said Keith Pelley, chief executive officer of the DP World Tour.

“We have worked very hard with the Sunshine Tour to develop the global pathway that we now offer and we’re seeing the fruits of this with the exciting new talent emerging from the Sunshine Tour and earning a place on the DP World Tour.”

The Sunshine Tour will also host its own R2-million tournament before the start of the two new DP World Tour events from 9-12 March purely for Sunshine Tour members, the details of which will be announced in the near future.

The four Challenge Tour events that have been confirmed for 2023 all feature significant increases in prize money and each with a field of 156 professionals.

The Challenge Tour swing in South Africa will start with the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open from 2-5 February at Royal Cape Golf Club, where JC Ritchie won the last two editions of an event that helped him to gain his DP World Tour card for this season. The prize money for this tournament has been increased to $350,000.

The Challenge Tour will then travel to Fancourt for the popular Dimension Data Pro-Am from 9-12 February where the prize money has been increased to R7 million – with an additional R300,000 for the pro-am component of the tournament.

Since 1996, the Dimension Data Pro-Am has been one of the flagship events on the Sunshine Tour and in the last three years alone it has helped shape the international careers of champions Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Wilco Nienaber.

It then moves inland for the second SDC Open from 16-19 February at Zebula Golf Estate and Spa, featuring prize money of $350,000. This will be followed by the new $350,000 Nelson Mandela Bay Championship at the links of Humewood Golf Club from 23-26 February, which brings international golf back to one of South Africa’s celebrated courses and a five-time host of the Investec South African Open Championship.

“These events provide our members with valuable playing opportunities at a time of the year when it is difficult to stage events in Europe and I am pleased that through our ever-evolving relationship with the Sunshine Tour we are able to begin our season in South Africa for the fourth year running,” said Jamie Hodges, head of Challenge Tour.

“We have listened to feedback from our members and worked closely with Thomas Abt and his team to identify the correct events to co-sanction and we are therefore excited to start the 2023 Road to Mallorca season in Cape Town in February.”

After the four co-sanctioned events with the Challenge Tour, the Sunshine Tour season will conclude with the Limpopo Championship from 30 March to 2 April at Euphoria Golf Estate with an increased prize fund of R2-million, the R2-million Stella Artois Players Championship from 13-16 April at Dainfern Golf Estate, and the R2-million Tour Championship at Serengeti Estates from 20-23 April.

The DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour last year announced a significant extension to their existing long-term partnership which has already spanned more than a quarter of a century.

The 2023 Road to Mallorca International Schedule begins in the Mother City this week, with the first of four consecutive co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Tour as Challenge Tour players get the opportunity to tee it up alongside some of the best talent from the African continent.

The 2023 Road to Mallorca contains 29 events in 18 countries across three continents, including a return to India and the United Arab Emirates as players look to earn one of 20 life-changing DP World Tour cards on offer for the 2024 season.

Prestigious venue

This week’s event takes place at the oldest golf club in South Africa; Royal Cape Golf Club. Royal Cape was established in 1885 and is one of the best golf courses in Cape Town. The venue, which sits in the shadow of Table Mountain, has staged ten South African Opens, including the 1965 edition of the event, which was won by nine-time Major Champion Gary Player. Ernie Els, Mark McNulty and Trevor Immelman, the Challenge Tour’s first Masters champion, have also triumphed at the historic venue.

Stunning backdrop

Royal Cape is located in the shadow of Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of the world, and picturesque views of the landmark are visible from every hole on the course. The iconic mountain welcomes 4.2 million visitors per year, with many tourists taking a five-minute cableway trip to the summit to take in the spectacular views of the Mother City. The more adventurous may choose to hike, with a full-day Table Mountain climb taking around five hours to complete.

At Final Stage of 2024 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry – scheduled for December 12-15 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, with the Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass and Sawgrass Country Club once again serving as host venues – the top five finishers and ties will earn PGA TOUR cards. Final Stage will also determine 2025 season eligibility for the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR Americas.

Through a combination of live telecasts and livestreaming, Golf Channel will broadcast eight hours of live weekend coverage at Final Stage of 2024 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry.

How It Works

PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry consists of four different stages, though competitors can bypass Pre-Qualifying, First Stage, or Second Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry if they meet the criteria of at least one exemption category for First, Second, or Final Stage.

Competition for Pre-Qualifying, First Stage, and Second Stage is conducted at several different sites, with the number of competitors advancing from each site being on a pro rata basis (i.e., approximately the same percentage from each site will advance).

Final Stage of 2024 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry will be contested at Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass, as well as Sawgrass Country Club, with each competitor playing two rounds on each course. At the conclusion of the final round, the last set of PGA TOUR cards for the 2025 season will be awarded, with the others coming from the 2023-24 DP World Tour season (top 10 players from Race to Dubai Rankings not already exempt) and 2024 Korn Ferry Tour season (top 30 players on final points list).

• Pre-Qualifying (eight sites, 54-hole stroke play competition) – September 11-27
• First Stage (13 sites, 72-hole stroke play competition) – October 8-25
• Second Stage (five sites, 72-hole stroke play competition) – November 19-December 6
• Final Stage (72-hole stroke play competition) – December 12-15

Performance Benefits

The medalist (and ties) from each First Stage site, provided they do not improve their status at a subsequent stage, will be exempt through the Latin America Swing of the 2025 PGA TOUR Americas season.

The medalist (and ties) from each Second Stage site, provided they do not improve their status at Final Stage, will earn Korn Ferry Tour membership and be subject to the second reshuffle (i.e. – earn guaranteed starts for the first eight events) of the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour season.

Also at each Second Stage site, the next 10 finishers and ties after those players who advanced to Final Stage will earn conditional membership through the Latin America Swing of the 2025 PGA TOUR Americas season.

Performance benefits for Final Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry are as follows:

• Top five finishers and ties at Final Stage will earn PGA TOUR cards for the 2025 season
• Next 40 finishers and ties at Final Stage will earn exempt status through multiple reshuffles of the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour season, with the first 25 finishers and ties being subject to the third reshuffle (i.e. – guaranteed starts for the first 12 events), and any remaining finishers within the category being subject to the second reshuffle (i.e. – guaranteed starts for the first eight events)
• All remaining finishers at Final Stage earn conditional status for the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour season, in addition to being exempt through the Latin America Swing of the 2025 PGA TOUR Americas season

Exemption Categories

The field at Final Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry will feature players who advanced through the various stages of Q-School – Pre-Qualifying, First Stage, Second Stage – and others who automatically qualify by meeting the criteria of at least one exemption category.

Exemption categories for 2024 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry are as follows:

First Stage

• Members of the PGA TOUR, Korn Ferry Tour, Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO), Korea Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA), DP World Tour and Challenge Tour Ranked Members, PGA Tour of Australasia, Sunshine Tour, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, PGA TOUR Canada or PGA TOUR Americas during the years 2022, 2023 or 2024.

• Applicants that made the cut in a tournament awarding Official Money conducted by the PGA TOUR, Korn Ferry Tour, DP World Tour, Challenge Tour, Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO), Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA), PGA Tour of Australasia, Sunshine Tour, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, PGA TOUR Canada or PGA TOUR Americas during the years 2023 or 2024 as of the First Qualifying Stage entry deadline (September 4, 2024).

• Applicants who played the Second Qualifying Stage of the 2021 or 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament or 2023 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry.

• Applicants who finished in the top 50, including ties, at a First Qualifying Stage site of the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament or 2023 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry.

• Applicants that played in the 2023 or 2024: THE PLAYERS Championship, Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open or The Open Championship.

• Applicants that played in the 2024 PGA Professional Championship.

• Applicants that made the cut in the 2023 PGA Assistant Professional National Championship.

• Applicants ranked 101-200 on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) to be released as of the entry deadline for First Qualifying Stage (September 4, 2024).

• Applicants ranked six through twenty-five (6-25) on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) to be released as of Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

• Applicants who qualified for the 2021 or 2023 Walker Cup.

• Applicants who played in the semifinals of the 2022, 2023 or 2024 U.S. Amateur, or the final of the 2022 or 2023 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Second Stage

• 2024 PGA TOUR Members who are eligible for tournament play as defined in the PGA TOUR Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants with an official victory in a 2022, 2023 or 2024 Korn Ferry Tour tournament as defined in the Korn Ferry Tour Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants finishing sixty-one through eighty-fifth (61-85) on the final 2024 Official Korn Ferry Tour Points List, as defined in the Korn Ferry Tour Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants who have made fifty (50) or more cuts in PGA TOUR cosponsored or approved tournaments awarding official money as of the Second Qualifying Stage entry deadline (October 2, 2024).

• Applicants who made the cut in the 2024: THE PLAYERS Championship, Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open or The Open Championship.

• Players ranked fifty-first through one hundred (51-100) on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) to be released as of the entry deadline for Second Qualifying Stage (October 2, 2024).

• Applicants ranked sixth through twenty-fifth (6-25) on the current season’s Final Official 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking.

• Applicants ranked three through ten (3-10) on the 2024 PGA TOUR Americas Segment 1 Official Points List, as defined in the PGA TOUR Americas Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants ranked four through ten (4-10) on the 2024 PGA TOUR Americas Segment 2 Official Points List, as defined in the PGA TOUR Americas Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants ranked eleven through twenty-five (11-25) on the PGA TOUR Americas 2024 Official Season-Long Fortinet Cup Points List, as defined in the PGA TOUR Americas Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants ranked first through fifth (1-5) on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) to be released as of Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

• Applicants ranked one through five (1-5) including ties at the 2024 PGA Professional Championship.

• Applicants ranked one through five (1-5) on the current season’s Official Order of Merit for Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) as of the Second Qualifying Stage deadline (October 2, 2024).

• Applicants ranked two through five (2-5) on the 2023-2024 Final Official Order of Merit for the PGA Tour of Australasia.

• Applicants ranked two through five (2-5) on the 2023-2024 Final Official Players List for the Sunshine Tour.

• Applicants ranked one through five (1-5) on the 2024 Genesis Point List for the Korea Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA) as of the Second Qualifying Stage deadline (October 2, 2024).

• Applicant who is a current Korn Ferry Tour member that has been disabled to the extent he is unable to compete in more than twelve (12) events in a season but has played in a minimum of five (5) Korn Ferry Tour events that season; has performed at a level which placed him 61st – 85th position on the Official Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season Points List at the time he was disabled; or who has average points per event at the time he was disabled which would have placed him 61st – 85th position on the Official Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season Points List for the entire season (determined by multiplying such an average number of Korn Ferry Tour events played by all Korn Ferry Tour members).

Final Stage

• The top 40 available applicants below the 125th position on the Final 2024 FedExCup Fall Playoffs & Eligibility Points List, to a floor of 200th position.

• Applicants ranked on the PGA TOUR Nonmember FedExCup Points list (including Special Temporary Members) whose combined official points and points earned in the Kentucky Championship and Barracuda Championship is equal to or greater than the 150th place finisher on the Final 2024 FedExCup Fall Playoffs and Eligibility Points List.

• Applicants ranked thirty-first through sixtieth (31-60) on the season ending 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Official Points List, as defined in the Korn Ferry Tour Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants ranked first through fifty (1-50) on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) to be released as of the Final Qualifying Stage entry deadline (November 13, 2024).

• Applicants ranked two through five (2-5) on the current season’s Final Official 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking.

• Applicants ranked first and second (1 & 2) on the 2024 PGA TOUR Americas Segment 1 Official Points List, as defined in the PGA TOUR Americas Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants ranked one through three (1-3) on the 2024 PGA TOUR Americas Segment 2 Official Points List, as defined in the PGA TOUR Americas Tournament Regulations.

• Applicants ranked one through ten (1-10) on the PGA TOUR Americas 2024 Official Season-Long Fortinet Cup Points List, as defined in the PGA TOUR Americas Tournament Regulations.

• Leading player on the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) Official Order of Merit as of the Final Qualifying Stage deadline (November 13, 2024).

• Leading player on the PGA Tour of Australasia 2023-2024 Final Official Order of Merit.

• Leading player on the 2023-2024 Final Official Players List for the Sunshine Tour.

• Leading player on the 2024 Final Genesis Point List for the Korea Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA) as of the Final Qualifying Stage deadline (November 13, 2024).

• Applicants among Major and Minor Medical Extension category members (as defined in the PGA TOUR Tournament Regulations) whose FedExCup Points earned in their “Available Tournaments”, when combined with the amount of FedExCup Points earned in their “Tournaments Played”, equals or exceeds the amount of FedExCup Points earned by the member who finished last in the 25 finishers beyond 125th place on the FedEx Cup Points List for the preceding season shall be exempt into Final Qualifying Stage in that year provided that the FedExCup Points earned in his “Tournaments Played” was less than the 150th finisher on the FedExCup Points List in the year of the applicant’s injury.

• Applicant who is a current Korn Ferry Tour member that has been disabled to the extent he is unable to compete in more than twelve (12) events in a season but has played in a minimum of five (5) Korn Ferry Tour events that season; has performed at a level which placed him 31st – 60th on the Official Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season Points List at the time he was disabled; or who has average points per event at the time he was disabled which would have placed him 31st – 60th on the Official Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season Points List for the entire season (determined by multiplying such an average number of Korn Ferry Tour events played by all Korn Ferry Tour members).

My two year old has been going here for a year now. Zahra (known affectionately as "Fafa" to the kids) and her Mom ("Mama Shery") are super warm and caring with the children, and also laid back and easy to deal with as a parent, in case you have a particular request, need to do an early drop off or have questions. The house is spacious and has lots of play areas for the kids, and there is also a good outdoor space where they go every day (this was super important to me). The house always smells of delicious food and my daughter eats really well. She loves all her friends too. They make sure the kids have a nice nap so they still have energy left when they get home. I noticed my daughter learnt to count and can sing the alphabet song, neither of which I really spent much time teaching her. She also knows a bunch of other songs that Zahra has them doing and she loves doing the actions as well. They are reasonable on sickness too, which is important as kids inevitably pick up little colds while at daycares (of course be respectful and look after your kid at home if they are particularly sick or still contagious!) My girl looks forward to going to "Fafa's house" every morning. Overall I would recommend!

Overall, this is the best daycare there is if you're worried about finding a trustworthy place. Sunshine takes care of my main childcare concern, which is being able to pick up your kid in relief because you can tell they were well taken care of. I originally chose Sunshine because it was close to my office, but now I stay for the happy welcomes and hugs we get every morning. My son has to be the one to touch the doorbell every single morning. He's always happy to jump into Zara and Zara's Mothers arms. He loves them which is good because he is with them as much as his family. When I pick him up, they do a big build up on the inside "daddy's here! daddy's here!" The door opens and he's so surprised that he can't control his laughter. These types of things are important and should try to be burned into a parent's memory. It's a short window of time that they're at this age. Upon walking out, Zara will wave bye bye from the door all the way until we get into the car and shut the door. It's a fun daily thing. When my son was just learning to wave it was the absolute cutest. Food is no issue. My little guy loves all of their home cooked food and you'll love how Zara will send you such adorable and funny pictures of them in the high-chair. I know he has lots of friends there because he repeats their names constantly when at home. He's almost two now and he has been coming to Sunshine since when he was only starting to crawl. Very nice home and it's in a good neighborhood. Close to a good middle school. You'll love the very wide open and large rooms the kids stay in. Zara teaches them a lot and I know because my kid will know and do things that my wife and I never taught him. It's nice to have some help since we are busy and can't always get around to teaching all of the things we'd like to. Even if my office were to move or the location was no longer convenient, I would still drive miles so my son can stay here at Sunshine. I've done daycares and preschools with my two older kids already and this place goes beyond checking just the essential boxes. It goes extra far and incorporates all of the special moments and happy memories you won't want to miss out on with your child. Sometimes I reel like dropping off and picking up my kid everyday can turn into nothing but a stressful rush as I'm usually running late to work and have to get to somewhere else as soon as I'm off. This is why I love that I am forging memories here that I know will never be forgotten. My son is still little, but I am already getting sad for the day that he'll have to eventually leave his Zara.

This place is a great home daycare for infants and toddlers. Zahra and her mom are so caring and loving with my daughter. I really recommend this place for your kids, especially if you don't have any family here and can't trust anyone else to take care of your loved ones. In just a few days you can easily see how happier your kids are which is reflective of the quality of service. My daughter is excited everyday when she enters the daycare which is something we have not noticed with any other place in this town.

This place is amazing for kids, she is so awesome at her job. Their foods have high quality for kids, this daycare looks like a second home for kids. I really recommend this place for your kids, especially if you don't have any family here and can't trust anyone else to take care of your loved ones. In just a few days you can easily see how happier your kids are.

They are really amazing teachers and they take care of the kids like their own I really recommend them to you guys they are very professional and sweet they give them breakfast, snacks and lunch they have nap time for the kiddos and activities for the kiddos to do

My twins were in Zahra's care before my mom took early retirement to help us. I knew my girls were in good hands each day I dropped them off. They had the biggest smiles when we would get there. She took care of them like they were her own. She sticks to your schedule if you ask her and has many developmental toys that made me happy knowing my girls were not only being loved but being developed well! We will miss her so much!
