Daily guided tour to learn more about sea turtles..

IC-Tahiti-Turtles-097

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 to 2:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 am.

EXPERIENCES & RECREATION

Te mana o te moana offers a 1 hour daily guided tour at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 to 2:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 am to learn more about sea turtles, their life cycle and the challenges they face.

Te mana o te moana, an association dedicated to the protection and conservation of the Polynesian marine environment and sea turtles, works in partnership with the DIREN: sea turtles requiring care are collected by the Direction of the Environment of French Polynesia, assessed by a certified vet and transferred to Te mana o te moana for rehabilitation treatments.

A fee will be charged for the tour: 1,500 xpf per person over 12 an 500 xpf per person under 12 . Reservations are required, either in person at the welcome desk at the Top Dive fare (open from 1pm to 4pm Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 12pm on Saturdays), on the association’s messenger or by email at [email protected]

Up to 20 guests can attend this informative tour that starts with an overview of all turtle species that grace our waters, then moves on to our turtle lagoon.

Meeting point for the tour is at the welcome kiosk at fare Top Dive 10 min before the tour begins.

Here, guests can observe our residents who need special care, including Matapo, a blind hawksbill turtle, Miti Iti, and Okely, two floating green turtles. 11 juvenile green turtles from the 2023 laying season currently swim around their new nursery. They will be released when they reach the appropriate size.

On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

  • Travel on a specific airline of their choice
  • Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
  • Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
  • Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
  • Use their travel agent for this service

We are able to assist with flights on any Holiday Package, so please just notify us during the Book Now process or contact our team.

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia. It is your responsibility as the traveller and/or travel booker to meet all government entry requirements.

  • Te Moana - A Great Introduction to Tahiti

In his latest blog post, Dale Dunlop, The Maritime Explorer , travels to and blogs about Te Moana – A Great Introduction to Tahiti. If you are interested in what Adventures Abroad has to offer, please check out our Small Group Tours .

This is my second post from a recent trip Alison and I took with Adventures Abroad to French Polynesia. The first post was an overview of the entire trip and gave the reasons why I thought it was pretty well unique in terms of what tour operators are offering in this area of the world. In this post I'm going to get down to specifics, starting with the first place on the itinerary, the wonderful Te Moana Tahiti Resort just outside of Papeete. Here's why I think you should take the time to spend at least one extra day here before the official tour begins.

Getting to French Polynesia from my home province of Nova Scotia is not that easy. It is 11,000 km. (6800 miles) and seven times zones away. We elected to do it in two stages, stopping in Vancouver for the night and then getting to Tahiti via San Francisco. Even so, we knew we would not want to hook up with the tour right off the bat, but rather have an extra day to get adjusted which we had booked in advance through AA. As it turned out, when we exited the Papeete airport after getting leied, there were six other tour participants who also elected to come over a day earlier.

Getting Leied in Papeete Airport

At the time we arrived, everybody coming to French Polynesia was subjected to an antigen Covid test which didn't take very long and you didn't have to wait for the results. They would track you down if it was positive. Needless to say, they weren't or I wouldn't be writing this story. I believe these requirements are now lifted, although you probably need a negative test result before getting on the plane to Tahiti.

I have often commented on the high quality of the hotels that Adventures Abroad uses on their tours and I'm happy to report that the ones we stayed at in French Polynesia were exceptional, starting with the Te Moana.

Te Moana Tahiti Resort

Te Moana

Here's something I did not know before arriving in Tahiti – there are actually very few resorts on the island, just over a dozen in total. Something else I did not know, there are next to no beaches on the island. The reason for this is that Tahiti and the rest of the Society Islands archipelago which includes Moorea and Bora Bora are geologically very young. The volcanoes that arose from the sea floor to create them have not had the time to erode enough to develop beaches around their edges. With one notable exception on Bora Bora, the few beaches that do exist are small and made up of the black sand that marks a very young island. So don't get the idea that coming to Tahiti will mean nice long walks on golden strands. But don't worry, there's more than enough to compensate for this one natural shortcoming.

The Te Moana is located a relatively short distance from the Papeete airport and has a fabulous location looking directly at the island of Moorea.

Moorea from Te Moana

From the moment you enter its airy atrium lobby, you begin to relax and soak up the almost tangible lush tropical aroma of the place with its combination of pungency and fragrance.

Atrium Lobby

Check-in was a breeze with a very friendly welcome and it was great to see our Adventures Abroad guide Martin Charlton waiting to greet us. We had last travelled with Martin and his father on our trip to Egypt and since then we have kept in touch regularly. After a quick briefing, we unpacked our things in Room 4104 which had this view from our balcony. Not too shabby.

Moorea from Room 4104

Here's an important thing about the Te Moana. It has five separate buildings of which only two actually front right on the ocean. The other three are behind buildings four and five so the view from these is of the buildings in front of you. I would have been severely pissed to have been in one of these, but to AA's credit, we all had these oceanfront rooms, even though they cost a lot more than the non-ocean view rooms. I sure as hell did not want to travel 11,000 kms to Tahiti to look at someone else's ocean view room.

This is building four from the ocean side. You can see that the balconies are quite expansive.

Building 4

After what seemed like an unending winter in Canada, the grounds of the Te Moana with its bougainvillea, plumeria and water lilies were a treat to eyes starved of any real colour other than gray for months. The nose was rewarded with the always welcome fragrance of frangipani and the ears rejoiced in the sound of trickling water rather than the crackling of ice back home. In other words, your senses come alive in the tropics in a way that I cannot adequately describe – you need to experience it for yourself. It's worth travelling 11,000 kms. for.

Water Lily

The Te Moana has a great bar right on the water where Martin, Alison, and I had our first beverage in Tahiti, the very refreshing Hinano Blonde Lager whose iconic symbol of a Polynesian woman in a red and white muumuu is omnipresent throughout French Polynesia.

Hinano Blonde Lager – Official Beer of French Polynesia

After catching up with Martin, Alison and I had our first meal on Tahiti at the Taapuna Restaurant which is adjacent to the bar. It was my first chance to try what must be the national dish of French Polynesia – poisson cru or 'Ota 'ika  as a Polynesian would call it. On English menus, it has the less appetizing appellation – raw fish.

Poisson Cru

It is made from raw fish, usually tuna, briefly marinated in lime or lemon juice and then soaked in coconut milk with raw vegetables such as green onions, carrots or cucumbers added. It is essentially a South Seas version of ceviche which is probably my all time favourite dish on earth. Not surprisingly I loved the poisson cru and ate it virtually every day I was in French Polynesia.

Alison had an equally delicious seafood salad, this one made with another of our favourite seafood, octopus.

Octopus Salad

It had been a long day and we made an early night of it with a glass of wine on the balcony watching paddleboarders go by in the dusk.

Sunset Paddlers

As the sunset over Moorea, it was truly one of those pinch me moments when we both looked at each other and said, "Are we really here?" and the answer was, "Yes."

Sunset over Moorea

The breakfast at Te Moana was our first opportunity to actually realize that we were in French territory as the buffet included not only the standard items you would expect including some great tropical fruits but also freshly baked baguettes, croissants and other hard to resist pastries. You could also order a number of items including very good omelettes from the menu.

Breakfast Buffet

Perhaps the best feature of the Te Moana is the enclosed lagoon where you can see a pretty good variety of tropical fish from the walkway leading to the motu or even closer up if you want to put on your snorkelling gear. BTW a motu is a Polynesian word for a small flat island.

Walkway to the Motu

I'm not usually a pool person, but the infinity pool at the Te Moana is quite irresistible. I mean where else can you get this?

Infinity Pool and Moorea

So those are my reasons for coming to the Te Moana resort at least one day early. In the next post, I'll give you another reason – to spend some time exploring Papeete.

“Being brave is the deep breath you take before doing something you’ve never imagined before.” - Legal scholar and social analyst Moana Jackson, 2022

It was a statistic that horrified the Government of the day. In 1988, the Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister, Geoffrey Palmer, revealed that 50 per cent of the inmates of New Zealand prisons were Māori.

Palmer, who’d used that “horrified” word himself, wanted something done. So he asked the legal scholar and Māori-rights advocate Te Moana Nui a Kiwa Jackson, better known as Moana Jackson, to investigate.

Jackson (Ngāti Kahungungu, Ngāti Porou, Rongomaiwahine) toured the country. He met with 6000 people, including many who were or had been in prison, and produced a report called Māori and the Criminal Justice System: A New Perspective, He Whaipaanga Hou . It is still one of the largest research projects into Māori ever carried out.

He Whaipaanga Hou made the case for a separate Māori system of justice. It wasn’t quite what Palmer had in mind. But while politicians, the judiciary and much of the public were shocked, the debate on race relations in this country was changed forever. Even though its central idea has not come to pass.

Jackson wasn’t the first to propose a “by Māori, for Māori” approach. Donna Awatere had done the same with her book Māori Sovereignty , published in 1982, the year after the Springbok Tour brought race relations onto the streets and into the living rooms of the nation.

And the lineage stretches far back before her. Under article two of the Treaty of Waitangi, the Crown guarantees to preserve rangatiratanga in Māori society. The meaning of that is contested, but it’s fairly clear that at the time, Māori and many Pākehā observers assumed Māori would retain authority over their own lives and social institutions.

As Māori advocate Julia Whaipooti says in the documentary Moana Jackson: Portrait of a Quiet Revolutionary , “It is what Te Tiriti promised us, which is that we will take care of our own stuff.”

In the same film, Jackson says that every different understanding of the treaty is based on “an illusion that on the 6th of February 1840 every Māori in the country woke up and said, ‘We don’t want to make our own decisions anymore, we’re going to give it to that lady in London we’ve never even met.’”

He argues that this illusion should stop. In 1988, his focus was justice, but the potential application was far wider. “Taking care of our own stuff” means, or can mean, everything.

This is what gives He Whaipaanga Hou its lasting significance. Jackson died in 2022, but his report from 34 years earlier provides a full-scale evidential, analytic, cultural, legal and moral framework for the restoration of rangatiratanga. Should such a thing be wanted.

From the moment of its publication, Government and civil responses to racial injustice in Aotearoa New Zealand had to grapple with a central question: should Māori have autonomous authority over their lives, or does “one law for all” mean that cannot and should not happen?

Dr Moana Jackson passes away. Rod Emmerson 02/04/22

Jackson had started from a simple proposition: What we do now has failed, so let’s try something else.

He looked overseas and saw that high rates of imprisonment were common to indigenous peoples everywhere. He looked at home and saw that this couldn’t be explained just by poverty and deprivation.

“Proportionately,” he said, “there are more poor Pākehā people than there are poor Māori people.” But “in research project after research project, once you factor in socio-economics, the only difference left is race”.

The critical factor, he said, was colonisation. Social structures that alienate a people who have lost sovereign authority in the place that once was theirs. So he proposed a justice system for Māori based on tikanga: the established practices and values of Māori society.

This didn’t mean “special treatment” for Māori, but it might end the worse treatment Māori routinely received. To put that another way, Jackson observed that special treatment already existed in the judicial system: it went to Pākehā.

He pointed out that Māori already had a justice system when the first colonisers arrived. He wasn’t advocating a return to the punishments that might have been handed out two hundred years ago, any more than Pākehā today would advocate for the hangings, floggings and hard labour common in 19th-century Britain.

Under tikanga, he explained, the point of justice is to restore “the balance between the wrongdoer and the victim through mediation processes involving sanction and recompense”.

Indeed, he defined justice as “the maintenance of ea, which is the balance in relationships” and suggested the benefits of this flow to everyone: victims as well as offenders.

He didn’t see a viable alternative and he spent the next 34 years arguing the case. It boiled down to this: “You can’t get justice in an unjust society.”

The film Moana Jackson: Portrait of a Quiet Revolutionary , made by Moana Maniapoto and Toby Mills , offers a beautiful tribute to Jackson. It also makes the case for restoring rangatiratanga as clearly as you will find anywhere.

The initial response to He Whaipaanga Hou was to turn the report on its head.

“The justice system, the police, everyone, they all insisted they were not the problem,” says advocate Hinemoa Awatere in the film. “Māori communities were the problem and they deserved what they got.”

We’ve spent the decades since the report moving away from that idea. We don’t have a social consensus on how to do it, although there does seem to be a consensus that we should. Few people in institutional roles would argue with that today, although there are many in the wider population who do.

By 2022, though, Jackson was not impressed with progress. “The safe parts of the report” were adopted, he says in the film. There’s “tikanga everywhere” and “lots of people are doing lots of good work”, but successive Governments have “ignored the substantive issues”. Māori in the Justice and Corrections system are not subject to a system run by and for Māori.

Despite all that work, things have not got better. Where 50 per cent of the prison population in 1988 was Māori, the Ministry of Justice says it’s now 52 per cent.

And rather than trying to change this, says Professor Tracey McIntosh at the University of Auckland, we think of it as “an accepted feature of the New Zealand landscape”.

The system is reproducing the harm, she says, and somehow we’re okay with that.

Jackson didn’t think his alternative would be easy. A tikanga-based justice system would require society to “trust us to look after ourselves, because we will make a mess from time to time. But they will be our messes to fix, our messes to prevent. Because goodness, we can’t do any worse than they’ve done.”

Since He Whaipaanga Hou , every Government of the day has said, “We can’t have separatism.” But the wrongs have not been righted.

There are some who say not only that we can’t have separatism, but also argue we should not try to right the wrongs. At least, not with any targeted programmes, because that’s wrong in itself.

And then there is Whānau Ora.

Whānau Ora is a “by Māori, for Māori” approach to funding health providers inside iwi and other Māori entities. It allows providers and whanau to decide how the money is spent, so they become the “architects of their own solutions”. A review in 2019 found clear evidence this flexibility and autonomy were succeeding, although it noted the approach was still new.

The review also said demand for Whānau Ora in some areas was “overwhelming” and exceeded the available funding and resources.

Whānau Ora was created by the Māori Party, working inside the National-led Government of John Key.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has several times said he supports “by Māori, for Māori” approaches like this. But his coalition partners and some of his own National Party cabinet colleagues have been outspoken in their opposition to any separate programmes for Māori.

Whānau Ora is not rangatiratanga in action. It’s controlled by the Government of the day and its key problem, underfunding, is not something the service providers can fix. But the way the first minister in charge, Tariana Turia, talked about it, it’s clear she was thinking along similar lines to Jackson.

“Whānau Ora is about whānau being empowered to develop a plan for our future; and to trust in our own solutions,” she said in 2011. “It is about restoring to ourselves, our confidence in our own capacity to provide for our own – to take collective responsibility to support those who need it most.

“I believe that Whānau Ora represents a major transformation in the way services are designed and delivered, contracts arranged and the way providers work together.”

Perhaps Whānau Ora points to a pathway – not only in its structure and aims but in the surprising lack of controversy it’s generated. It’s a “race-based” programme, after all. But the sky hasn’t fallen in.

Moana Jackson had his sights set on 2040, although he knew he would not live to see it. The bicentennial anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, he suggested, should be the target date for honouring the rangatiratanga promise of the treaty.

“This country is yet to establish a rangatiratanga sphere of influence,” he said. He was thinking well beyond justice or health: he meant a Māori congress or parliament. If that happens, he believed, it would then be possible to create a “relational sphere of influence, where the two houses can come together to make joint decisions”.

“People,” he said, “just have to be brave enough.”

Het is even wennen.

roglic hindley red bull bora hansgrohe

' We willen onze eigen Pogacar of Remco Evenepoel vinden. Red Bull is daar nogal relaxed over.

Hij ligt me.'

Wonder, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, Princess Peach: Showtime! o Nintendo Switch Sports.

Podrás probar gratis Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, Princess Peach: Showtime! o Nintendo Switch Sports
