Can This New Collective of Indie Venues Revolutionize Touring?

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

The fight to secure federal funding for independent venues during the Covid-19 pandemic was remarkable on several fronts: Not only was it a rare bipartisan cause in an era of intense political polarization, but it came about thanks to a interconnected, but often disparate network of independent venues and promoters that united almost instantly at a moment of deep crisis. Now, after helping to secure the future of live independent music, a group of venues is offering up a new vision of the future.

D Tour is a new venture founded by indie venues and promoters in nine states, ranging from 200-cap clubs to 8,000-seat theaters. The group’s goal is to not only streamline the booking process for indie artists, but use that united front to help younger acts develop and reach bigger audiences on the road.

“Music fans and indie artists alike understand how critical their local independent venues and promoters are to their city’s live music ecosystem,” says Chris Cobb, a D Tour member who owns Nashville’s Exit/In and Bonafide Live, Inc. “The pandemic exposed the fragility of these ecosystems and broken aspects of the old systems. D Tour is a new model that offers independents a level of support they’ve never had. D Tour gives me confidence for the future of independents everywhere!”

D Tour will essentially function as an interdependent booking collective. Artists will have one point of contact while booking their shows, but individual members will bring key local knowledge to the process. Jessie Hartke, co-owner of Hartke Presents in Wichita, Kansas, explains that the goal is to not only ensure artists are playing the right venues, but that their shows are backed by the right promoters (D Tour will also be able to bolster local promotion with a united national campaign.)

Additionally, Hartke notes that while D Tour will function as a collective, the revenue generated from individual shows will stay in those markets, “further strengthening local businesses and local music scenes.” Shows, she adds, will be produced independently too, allowing for “a deeper understanding of each market, ultimately benefiting the artists, the fans, local communities, and all involved in the show.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Multi-instrumentalist Elise Trouw , who will hit the road in support of her upcoming album, will be the first artist to test out the D Tour model. The process so far, she says, has been extremely efficient: All her offers arrived on a single form and the deals for the various venues were largely similar; efforts to plan past tours, she notes, were marked by a much more “piecemeal approach.”

“It feels like there will be much more attention to detail for the tour,” Trouw adds. “The network of venues are already holding regular calls to discuss planning and marketing. These calls will continue through the tour and if there’s anything we learn from shows I’ve played, those ideas will be communicated to the remaining venues so that we are all on the same page and improving as we go.”

Ultimately, D Tour’s mission is to fashion a future for live independent music that is, yes, profitable, but more importantly, collectively sustainable for both venues and artists. The wide support independent venues received in the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic spoke to how crucial these spaces are in the live music ecosystem, nurturing artists as they graduate from clubs to theaters to arenas.

It’s that aspect — artist development — that most excites D Tour member Tobi Parks, owner of the 250-cap XBK Live in Des Moines, Iowa. “Our indie venues have always been the breeding ground for the next generation of professional artists,” she says. “By working together, we have the ability to break artists through our network of indie rooms and help artists in our own communities build a nationwide platform and launch careers as touring artists. We are able to break down the traditional power structures and build a network of support to nurture rising talent. I think we’ll see artists that may have only been locally successful find larger regional and national success through the efforts of D Tour.”

D Tour unites indie music venues across the nation, with xBk's Tobi Parks among founders

the d tour

If live music venues hadn't faced shutdowns and the difficulty of bringing together hundreds of people in a room during the pandemic, then D Tour might never have come along to help smaller venues unite.

The new network of independent venues and promoters just launched and plans to help smaller touring artists who'd play venues that typically hold 200 to 8,000 people. Tobi Parks, the owner of xBk Live in the Drake neighborhood of Des Moines, came on board as one of the founding members of D Tour .

“We had all come together through advocating for relief during the pandemic and that was the first time that independent venues and promoters were talking to each other en masse," Parks said. "We’d never had that sort of sustained communication ... (Now) we can revolutionize what’s happening in the independent music space.”

The husband-and-wife duo Jessie and Adam Hartke, promoters who run the Wave music venue in Witchita, Kansas , also joined the D Tour effort. The couple started booking shows together in 2009 and opened the Wave 2018 .

Despite more than a decade in the business of booking touring artists, Jessie Hartke described the pre-COVID music booking business as relatively lonely, not speaking nearly as often with fellow venue owners. She didn't know any of her fellow D Tour founders until after the pandemic brought them together.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"These are people who I would walk to the end of the earth with," she told the Des Moines Register.

She recalled the early days of the pandemic as "terrifying" from the perspective of the owner of a small, live music venue. Other  venue operators across the nation experienced similar emotions  at the time, eventually leading to the formation of the National Independent Venue Association and the successful Save Our Stages Act , part of the COVID-19 Relief Bill Congress passed in October 2020. Save Our Stages established a $10 billion grant program for live venue operators, promoters, producers and talent representatives with less than 500 full-time employees in less than 10 states. Grant recipients could receive up to 45 percent of their gross revenues from 2019, but not more than $12 million.

“Very soon (in the course of COVID-19) we were in contact with independent venue owners across the country and it was comforting to know we weren’t alone in this strange new world and there were others," Jessie Hartke said.

Elise Trouw first concert initiative for D Tour

First up for the new D Tour initiative is a concert with  Elise Trouw , a singer and multi-instrument talent, who has more than 650,000 followers on YouTube and Instagram . She's filled in to drum with Seal, performed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and toured both solo and with a band, yet her name is relatively unknown to most.

Parks plans to bring Trouw to xBk Live while she's on tour this summer or fall.

In an interview with Rolling Stone , Trouw felt positive about working with D Tour so far, noting "more attention to detail for the tour" from the network of venue owners.

It's artists like Trouw, who may have a passionate following but don't necessarily have huge name recognition, who Parks and Harkte expect will be collaborating with D Tour. The aim is to not only make it easier for those artists to tour but simpler for the venues to host those performers and ultimately create a more vibrant national music scene.

From surviving to trying to amplify Des Moines, other local indie artists

"What we were able to learn over the past two years is that we’re stronger together," Hartke said. "Prior to last year, most independent venues were just trying to survive to our next show.”

According to Parks, there's a good chance local music fans won't notice anything wildly different as D Tour continues to grow. She projects that the most noticeable effect for patrons will be a few more shows from a few more artists.

"If we’re able to get five or two more shows in the Des Moines market out of it, I think that’s a success," she said. “If we’re able to help Des Moines artists gain a platform somewhere else they wouldn’t have, I think that’s a success .”

Indie Venues Unite: D Tour Expands Network With First Avenue, 9:30 Club and More

Since March, the organization has expanded to more than 30 companies with hundreds of venues nationwide.

Live Music Society Awards $710K to 24 Small Venues Via 2024 Music In Action Grants

D Tour gives artists the opportunity to partner with a network of indie venues and promoters to bundle bookings for national tours rather than working with industry giants like Live Nation or AEG. The network also allows indies to partner with one another across the nation after years of working in the silos of their local economy.

Trending on Billboard

“We see the D Tour coalition as a big win for artists and for music fans outside of the major markets. We built Duck Club and Treefort in Boise, an often overlooked market, because we believed a music scene could thrive and help bridge long drives across the West for touring artists,” said Treefort Music Festival and Duck Presents co-founder Eric Gilbert in a release. “We think D Tour will offer similar scene-building nationwide, opening more avenues to artist development and strengthening the national music ecosystem at large. Independent venues and promoters are the grassroots of the national music scene and this effort will help strengthen those roots to the benefit of artists and music fans everywhere.”

MOKB Presents/HIFI Indy in Indiana, Howlin’ Wolf in Louisiana, Section Live and MeanRed Productions in Michigan, Ardenland in Mississippi, Pub Station/1111 Presents in Montana and Wyoming, Jade Presents in North and South Dakota, and Mississippi Studios/Revolution Hall in Oregon have also teamed up with D Tour. The network has placed an emphasis on secondary and tertiary markets in order to expand the routing opportunities for artists and place more shows in smaller venues throughout the country. Most recently, D Tour booked several dates for Minneapolis-based artist Durry.

“The team at D Tour were excellent to work with,” said Wasserman Music’s Jackie Nalpant and Maegan Hall in a release. “The care and commitment they put forth for DURRY, a young, developing band, was quite impressive. Their ability to connect the dots with all of the independent venues across the country was invaluable.”

Additional new affiliates include Broadberry Entertainment Group in Virginia, World Cafe Live in Pennsylvania, The State Room Presents in Utah, Higher Ground Presents in Vermont, Wild Buffalo House of Music in Washington and Pablo Center at the Confluence in Wisconsin.

D-Tour band performing Wednesday as part of Wander Ellwood

The D-Tour Band will perform at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Community Plaza in Ellwood City.

ELLWOOD CITY − The D-Tour Band is making its first appearance Wednesday at the Ellwood City Community Plaza.

Spokesman Hugh Sommers said everyone in the band likes different music, so they will be playing a mix of country, southern rock, blues and oldies.

The group consists of Sommers on the drums, Daryl Rowlands on lead guitar, Donnie Frelin on guitar, Sam Giannetti on guitar, Bill Fry on bass guitar, Ed Holsinger as the lead vocalist, and Johnny Cornelius as the sound man.

The group was formed around a year and a half ago to honor Terry Lowers, who died of cancer Aug. 2, 2020. Lowers played bass and sang for the Ameretta Band for over 30 years.

Rowlands was an original member of the Ameretta Band, and Sommers played with them for 13 years.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"We formed D-Tour because we wanted to keep the band together and honor Terry's memory. He loved to entertain people, and that's what we want to do too," Sommers said.

It's D-Tour's first time in the plaza, but it has played at local bars, and at community fundraising events.

The concert will be at 5:30 p.m. as part of both Wander Ellwood and the Ellwood City Summer Concert Series. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Lincoln High School auditorium.

Childish Gambino — aka multihyphenate Donald Glover — doesn’t do anything by half, and as he promised last month , he has dropped a new version of his surprise release “ 3.15.20 ” (which quietly dropped in March 2020), under its original title “Atavista,” dates for “The New World Tour,” a massive trek through North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, launching in August. He also released a video for the album’s song “Little Foot Big Foot,” directed by Hiro Murai, featuring Young Nudy.

Popular on Variety

The loaded announcement recalls the Saturday evening in 2018 when he not only hosted “Saturday Night Live” — appearing in nearly every sketch as host and twice as musical guest — but he dropped the complex “This Is America” song and video during the show.

The album, which features songs with Ariana Grande, Summer Walker and others, has been expanded with two new tracks. Its confusing original release took place in the first days of the pandemic, when Glover quietly posted it on a website without song titles, playing on a constant loop, before removing it around 12 hours later. The following week, he officially released it without fanfare or even detailed credits on streaming services.

Arriving as it did at the very beginning of the pandemic lockdown, the album soon faded from the memories of the people who’d noticed it at all. However, based on a conversation posted last month on his Gilga Instagram platform , he released the album in that way because it was unfinished and he simply wanted it to exist in case the world ended.

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, May 17 at 10am local time. Fans can also sign up for early access to tickets via the artist presale. American Express Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public for North American, Australian and select UK dates. Presale start and end times will vary by market, check your local listings at thenewworldtour.com. Terms and conditions apply.

Taylor Swift's European Eras Tour leg kicked off in Paris with a new setlist. See which songs are in and out.

May 9, 2024 / 8:24 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Taylor Swift fever struck Paris on Thursday as the highest-grossing tour in history finally arrived in Europe, with fans treated to the first-ever performance of songs from her latest album.

The Eras Tour began its European leg with four dates at the La Defense Arena in Paris.

"I wish I could have toured Europe more. This is a dream crowd," the 34-year-old megastar told the ecstatic audience.

There were deafening shrieks as images of typewriter sheets indicated that songs off the new album "The Tortured Poets Department" were starting late in the show.

Emerging in a lyrics-covered dress, she ran through several of the darker new tracks starting with "But Daddy I Love Him" and "Fortnight", a particularly furious rendition of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" and an elaborate "I Can Do it with a Broken Heart," with a golden-era Hollywood dance routine.

Other "The Tortured Poets Department" songs performed included "So High School," "Down Bad" and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," according to ETonline .

"You were the first crowd to see songs from 'The Tortured Poets Department'," she said, before adding: "Or, as I like to call it, 'Female Rage: the Musical.'"

That was a dream come true for many in the audience.

"I've been so excited for so long, I can't believe it's actually happening," said 11-year-old Emma, who had flown in with her mother from New York.

Adding songs from "The Tortured Poets Department" wasn't the only change to the show and its 45-song setlist.

Perhaps the biggest change, according to ETonline, is the "Folklore" and "Evermore" setlists were combined, cutting four songs across the two albums: "'Tis the Damn Season," "Tolerate It," "The 1" and "The Last Great American Dynasty."

"On the Eras Tour, we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter," Swift said, according to video posted to social media. "You can call it "Folklore, Evermore" or you can call it the Sister Albums! You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing 'Champagne Problems' with me."

"The Archer" was removed from the "Lovers" portion of the show and "Long Live" was cut from the "Speak Now" era setlist, according to ETonline.

One of the secret songs was, fittingly, the "Midnights" bonus track "Paris."

Parts of the show were also rearranged to make room for the newest era. The "Red" era was moved from the fifth to the third slot, according to ETonline, and the newest album was introduced following the "1989" set.

The venue said a fifth of the crowd were from the United States — many attracted by Europe's rules against charging huge mark-ups on resale tickets that can save Americans thousands of dollars compared with shows at home.

Georg'Ann Daly decided to celebrate her 23rd birthday with the Paris show. It meant flying from Nashville to Chicago to London and catching the Eurostar to Paris.

"I've always been obsessed with Taylor Swift," she told AFP.

A handful of superfans camped out from Tuesday in Paris to ensure they got a prime spot.

"I didn't plan to, but I came to check it out and I saw the first tents and I panicked a little," said Chris, 30.

Noah, 20, is seeing all four Paris concerts — he used 22 email addresses to get through the lottery system and secure the tickets.

FRANCE-MUSIC-AUDIENCE-TAYLOR-SWIFT

After wrapping up her run in Paris, Swift will head for dates in Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Poland and Austria.

The Eras Tour has worked its way across North and South America and Asia since starting in March 2023.

By the end of the year, it had already become the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets and is on track to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December.

Swift's popularity shows no sign of dimming — the new album sold 1.4 million copies on its first day and broke every streaming record , reaching a billion streams on Spotify within five days.

Swift's tell-all dissections of her love stories have been the fuel powering her global domination, and fans have been poring over "The Tortured Poets Department" for cryptic clues about ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, her short-but-dramatic fling with Matty Healy (lead singer of The 1975), and her current partner, American football star Travis Kelce.

"Taylor talks about toxic relationships, impossible love, politics, mental health, and so much more," said Chris as she waited by her tent for the big moment. "I think we can all find a song that resonates with our experiences."

8 best things to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend

Music, festivals, farm tours and more.

the d tour

Looking for something fun to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend? Here are our top picks.

Greek Festival at St. Sophia’s Cathedral

For fans of roast lamb and homemade spanakopita and loukoumades, it doesn’t get much better than this annual festival at St. Sophia’s Cathedral near Woodley Park, which features three days of food, music and dancing. Greek bands perform at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, while folk dancers, DJs and children’s groups are featured throughout the weekend. There are long lines for gyros and souvlaki cooked over coals (smell them and you’ll understand why), while the “Taverna” serves Greek beer and wine. A bazaar features Byzantine icons, jewelry, CDs and Greek soccer scarves, while a moon bounce and games keep the kids busy. If you’ve never visited St. Sophia’s before, tours are offered on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Friday from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Free.

Music in the Meadow at the National Arboretum

Bring a picnic to enjoy while watching the concert in the Arboretum’s Ellipse Meadow, featuring local neo-cumbian band Cumbia Heights. This event, supported by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, is pay-what-you-can. Note that ticketing is only for concert access; the grounds won’t be open during the show. Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. $25 recommended ticket price.

Fiesta Asia

The annual Fiesta Asia shuts down Pennsylvania Avenue between Third and Sixth streets NW to showcase more than 20 Asian cultures in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Look for live music and dance performances representing multiple countries, a karaoke stage, a cosplay contest, martial arts demonstrations, hands-on games and crafts for kids, a large vendor area, and a “food alley” featuring local and New York City restaurants that is apparently 50 percent larger than last year’s. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free .

Loudoun Farm Tour

The Loudoun Farm Tour is a way to immerse city slickers — kids and adults alike — in the rural communities on the other side of Dulles Airport. The 38 farms open their doors for more than just talks about farm management or letting kids come face to face with barnyard friends such as pigs, donkeys and llamas. Over two days, taste raw honey straight from an apiary or try a scoop of all-natural ice cream on a dairy farm. Learn how craft beer goes from the field to the bottle or tour farms dedicated to mushrooms, garlic or tea leaves. This year, the tour includes shuttle buses running on loops between farms, leaving from four locations, including the Ashburn Metro station. Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free; farms may charge for tours and activities .

Africa on the Avenue at Bruce Monroe Park

Washington’s African heritage and community are celebrated during Africa on the Avenue, held in Park View’s Bruce Monroe Park on Saturday. There’s music from a variety of DJs and artists, including the Ethiopian fusion of the Feedel Band, the Grammy-nominated songs of Malian griot Cheick Hamala Diabate, and the Farafina Kan drummers and dancers. For families, there’s a foam party, double Dutch, hula hoops and interactive art projects. Vendors will be selling African coffee, head wraps, braiding, clothing, books and pepper sauces. Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free .

Bladensburg Waterfront Art Festival

Painting and pontoon boats meet at Bladensburg Waterfront Park’s outdoor arts party, which features a market of local artists, hands-on community art projects, demonstrations and activities for kids. Adults can sip beer or wine, and all ages can enjoy live music and free boat tours on the Anacostia River. Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Free .

Lincoln Strawberry Festival

Supermarket strawberries have nothing on a freshly picked red berry, which you’ll find in abundance at the inaugural Lincoln Strawberry Festival in Loudoun County. This two-day fundraiser from Wegmeyer Farms begins Saturday morning with a strawberry pancake smorgasbord (buy a separate breakfast ticket in advance) and continues with musical performances, a strawberry baby fashion show, tractor rides, and eating competitions for strawberry pie and strawberry ice cream. Sunday’s schedule is similar, swapping in 4-H animal presentations in the morning instead of pancakes. Each day, you’ll be able to pick your own strawberries for purchase while supplies last. Proceeds benefit a variety of local causes. Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. $15; free for kids age 2 and under .

The Running of the Chihuahuas at the Wharf

The Wharf’s quirky combination of the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo is back for the 12th year on Sunday, after rain on May 4 postponed the original event. The annual Running of the Chihuahuas involves more than 100 of these tiny dogs sprinting in groups of eight on a 60-foot “racetrack.” One Chihuahua eventually emerges as the fastest of the pack, winning $100 cash and swag during this bracket-style tournament. Only Chihuahuas can race, but dogs of all types can enter an all-breed dog costume contest, while human spectators enjoy the Pacifico Beer Garden, a DJ, a pet photo booth and an adoptable-dog parade. This event is very popular: Arrive early for the best views of the track, or watch on a giant video projection screen. Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Free admission. All spots for racing Chihuahuas are filled.

BOGOTÁ, Colombia – Sandy Scott carded an 8-under 64 in the first round of the Inter Rapidísimo Golf Championship to lead by one at Club El Rincón de Cajicá. No. 1-ranked Matthew Anderson is tied for second with Abel Gallegos at 7-under. Two players are tied for fourth entering Friday’s second round in Bogotá, Colombia.

Scott’s opening-round 64 tied his career low and became his 11th consecutive round under-par this season. Scott has made the cut in all five appearances this season, and has posted three consecutive top-10 finishes with a season-best at the KIA Open (T6/-12). He sits atop the leaderboard for the first time this season.

The Scotland-native's success in Colombia began at the 2023 PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Inter Rapidísimo Golf Championship where he finished in solo third to claim the best finish of his career. Scott finished No. 14 in the Totalplay Cup standings to gain membership into the inaugural PGA TOUR Americas season.

Prior to turning professional in 2022, Scott played five seasons of collegiate golf at Texas Tech. He claimed two individual victories (El Macero Classic/2019, The Carmel Cup/2019) and was selected to the Arnold Palmer Cup and Walker Cup in 2019. He won two of his matches in the Arnold Palmer Cup to help lead the International Team to a 33.5-26.5 victory over the United States.

Upon his fifth and final year at Texas Tech, Scott played in only three tournaments before his year was cut short due to a severe wrist injury. Scott’s injury required two surgeries; following the second surgery, Scott was unable to pick up a golf club for 18 months. In November of 2022, Scott became the lone amateur to earn PGA TOUR Latinoamérica status after finishing tied for sixth at the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Qualifying Tournament at Florida’s Mission Inn Resort & Club.

After the first round of the Inter Rapidísimo Golf Championship, Scott is projected to move into the No. 2 position in the Fortinet Cup. The top-two players at the end of the Latin America Swing will earn conditional membership on the Korn Ferry Tour for the 2025 season. Second-round tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. ET and will run until 1:50 p.m. ET off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees on Friday.

History of Kursk

11th century, first mention.

Although archaeological evidence suggests that there was a large settlement in the location of Kursk before the 8th Century, Kursk was first mentioned in 1032 in the Hagiography of St Theodosius (Feodosi) of the Kiev-Caves, who grew up in Kursk which was by then already a large, developed and important city. In approximately 1095 Izyaslav Vladimirovich, a son of Vladimir Monomakh, became the first prince of Kursk although he only ruled there for a year as shortly afterwards he was elevated to prince of Murom. However Prince Izyalslav had enough time to build a fortress in Kursk, making the settlement one of the strongest on the borders of Kievan Rus.

12th Century

Princes of kursk.

As only a minor principality, the Kursk Principality did not always have its own prince and never had its own dynasty of Ryurikid princes. The principality often passed between the various factions of Ryurikid princes during this period of time when internecine wars were common. In 1127 Vsevolod Olgovich took Chernigov from his uncle. To stop Mstislav the Great interfering in this conflict Vsevolod gave him Kursk and the surrounding lands. In turn Mstislav the Great made his son Izyaslav prince of Kursk. Izyaslav Mstislavich ruled as prince of Kursk until 1130 when he became prince of Polotsk. The Olgovichy princes were able to regain Kursk in 1136 : Gleb Olgovich ruled Kursk up to his death in the city in 1138 and was followed by his younger brother Svyatoslav Olgovich who ruled in Kursk until 1139 when he returned to be prince of Novgorod. In 1146 Svyatoslav Olgovich became prince of Novgorod-Seversky, which included Kursk. Svyatoslav gave Kursk to Ivan Yurievich, son of his ally Yuri Dolgoruky. Ivan Yurievich died in 1147 and Svyatoslav gave the principality to Ivan's younger brother Gleb who ruled in Kursk until 1148 .

Tale of Prince Igor's Campaign

'The field of Igor Svyatoslavich's battle with the Polovtsy' by Viktor Vasnetsov (1889)

In 1161 Kursk once again had its own prince - Oleg Svyatoslavich, son of Svyatoslav Olgovich. Oleg ruled in Kursk until 1164 when he became prince of Novgorod-Seversky. Oleg's brother Vsevolod succeeded him in Kursk. Vsevolod Svyatoslavich was known as Vsevolod Bui-Tur, meaning something along the lines of Mighty Bull. As his sobriquet suggests he was known for his bravery in dealing with the Cumans (Polovtsians). In 1185 Prince Igor of Novgorod-Seversky led an unsuccessful campaign against the Cumans which is the subject of the famous 12th-century Tale of Prince Igor's Campaign. Prince Vsevolod Bui-Tur accompanied his brother on the campaign and also features as one of the heroes in the tale. Vsevolod Bui-Tur remained prince of Kursk until his death in 1196 .

13th Century

Mongol-tatar invasion of rus.

After Vsevolod Bui-Tur's death in 1196 , it is unclear who became prince of Kiev. It is possible that he was succeeded by his nephew Prince Svyatoslav Olgovich of Rylsk. In 1223 a Prince Oleg of Kursk participated in the Battle of River Kalka against the Mongols, Prince Oleg was a descendent of Prince Oleg Svyatoslavich of Novgorod-Seversky, possibly the son of Prince Svyatoslav Olgovich of Rylsk. After Prince Oleg, information on the princes of Kursk is unclear. In any case the principality came to an end in 1238 when Kursk was destroyed during the Mongol-Tatar Invasion of Rus. Later Kursk was once again devastated by Mongol-Tatar forces in response to the citizens of Kursk rising up against the Mongol representative there.

14th and 15th Centuries

The Mongol-Tatar Invasion significantly weakened Russian territories and Grand Duke Algirdas of Lithuania took advantage of this situation. In the 1350s Algirdas managed to capture the Chernigov and Novgorod-Seversky lands, including Kursk, and incorporated them into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Kursk would remain part of Lithuania up until the beginning of the 16th century. In 1402 Kursk is mentioned as a Lithuanian city in an agreement between Lithuania and the Teutonic Order. Throughout the 15th century the city was raided by Crimean Tatars and the Nogais.

16th Century

Russian-lithuanian wars.

The Russian-Lithuanian War of 1500 - 1503 was very successful for Russia which gained control of one-third of Lithuanian territory, including Kursk. After the Russian-Lithuanian War of 1507 - 1508 a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Lithuania under which Grand Duke Sigismund I the Old of Lithuania recognised the territory won by Grand Prince Ivan III of Rus during the 1500 - 1503 war as territory of Russia. In 1597 Tsar Fyodor I had a new fortress constructed in Kursk to protect it from Crimean Tatar raids.

17th Century

Znamensky monastery.

Znamensky Monastery

Kursk was one of the first cities to declare its support of the First False Dmitri in 1604 . When Dmitri was in Kursk he demanded the Our Lady of the Kursk Root Icon be brought to him and later he took it with him to Moscow. In 1612 Polish interventionists began besieging the Kursk fortress. The defenders refused to surrender even though the situation looked hopeless. Legend has it they made an oath to build a monastery should the Virgin Mary protect them. Several weeks later the siege was lifted and the fortress did not fall. The defenders immediately began to fulfil their oath and built a wooden church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. In approximately 1615 , Tsar Michael returned the Our Lady of the Kursk Root Icon to the nearby Korennaya Hermitage and in 1618 the icon was transferred to a newly established monastery in Kursk. It remained in Kursk thereafter only returning to the Korennaya Hermitage on annual religious processions. In 1649 on the orders of Tsar Michael a new  stone cathedral was built especially to house the icon and from this point onwards the monastery became known as the Znamensky monastery.

18th Century

Administrative reform.

Map of the Kursk Governorate

In 1708 Kursk became part of the Kiev Governorate and in 1727 part of the Belgorod Governorate. In 1779 it was elevated to the administrative centre of the Kursk Viceroyalty. A coat of arms was officially approved for the city in 1780 which depicts three partridges flying on a blue strip on a silver background. In 1781 there was a major fire in Kursk and subsequently a new general plan was adopted for the city. Kursk became the administrative centre of the  in 1797 .

19th Century

Our lady of the kursk root icon and religious processions.

'Religious Procession in the Kursk Province' by Ilya Repin (1880-1883)

In the mid-19th century the religious procession with the Our Lady of the Kursk Root Icon from Kursk's Znamensky Monastery to the nearby Korennaya Hermitage became one of the biggest religious events in the empire and tens of thousands of people took part in it. In 1883 the artist Ilya Repin depicted this religious procession in his famous painting in which he shows the various social strata in Russia at the time. In 1898 an anarchist placed a bomb in the Our Lady of the Sign Cathedral of the Znamensky Monastery under the Our Lady of the Kursk Root Icon. The explosion caused great damage to the cathedral but when the priest found the silver case of the icon in the rubble, he discovered that the icon itself has miraculously survived.

20th Century

A religious procession in Kursk before the Revolution

In 1917 Soviet power was declared in Kursk, but the volunteer army of General Anton Denikin briefly occupied the city from September to November 1919 when the Soviets retook the city. When Denikin's army left Kursk they took with them the Our Lady of the Kursk Root Icon, which was eventually taken to the USA where it remains today. In 1934 Kursk became the centre of the newly-established Kursk Region.

Second World War

Kursk after the Second World War

On 29 August 1941 Kursk experienced its first bombing raid by the Luftwaffe and on 1 November 1941 the city was attacked. Kursk fell two days later on 3 November 1941 and was only liberated on 8 February 1943 by the 60th army of the Voronezh Front. The liberation of Kursk resulted in what is known as the Kursk Salient - a Soviet-controlled bulge on the frontline around the city. It was obvious to the Soviets that soon Hitler would launch an attempt to recapture the city. Marshal Zhukhov was among those who argued that the Red Army should go on the defensive and only once the Nazis had been exhausted should they launch a counter-attack. This proved to be a successful tactic and at the Battle of the Kursk Salient, which was fought between 5 July to 23 August 1943 , the Soviets were victorious, although at a very high cost. The Battle of Prokhorovka (often also called the Battle of Kursk) took place during the Battle of the Kursk Salient in Prokhorovka outside Belgorod and was the largest tank battle in history. After the Battle of the Kursk Salient, the Nazis remained on the defensive for the rest of the war.

A religious procession with the Our Lady of the Kursk Root Icon

After the fall of the Soviet Union, many of Kursk's churches were once again reopened.  This included the Znamensky Monastery and the new century saw the religious procession from the monastery to the Korennaya Hermitage being revived and gaining in popularity.  In 2007 Kursk was awarded the title of City of Military Glory for the “courage, endurance and mass heroism, demostrated by defenders of the city in the struggle for the freedom and independence of the Motherland”.
