The Shins to Perform ‘Oh, Inverted World’ in Its Entirety on 21st Anniversary Tour

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

A year after the Shins   celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut Oh, Inverted World , the band will mark its 21st birthday with a lengthy North American tour where they’ll play the beloved 2001 LP in its entirety.

The trek for the album — which included tracks like “New Slang,” “Caring Is Creepy,” and “The Past and Pending” — kicks off July 12 in San Francisco and concludes two months later in Portland, Oregon on Sept. 16.

Along the way, James Mercer and company will bring their DIY-spun Oh, Inverted World venues like Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, and Morrison, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

“Everything was so tongue-in-cheek in the indie world of the ’90s,” Mercer said of the album in a new statement. “I remember feeling a longing for some sort of romance in music again, something earnest, like a real attempt at some emotional language.”

In addition to each gig’s full-album set of Oh, Inverted World — which was remastered and rereleased in 2021 for its 20th anniversary — the Shins will also perform a handful of fan favorites and deep cuts on their upcoming gig. Portland band Joseph will serve as special guest on the trek.

Live reviews

Hier mein Review für das Shins Konzert am 16. August 2017 in Köln.

Over the years since their remarkable 2001 debut album, The Shins have undergone numerous personnel changes. That's OK though, as long as lead singer and songwriter James Mercer is still running the show.

While time and age have perhaps supplanted the group's original wide-eyed naivete, that's been more than adequately replaced at live shows by an expanded 7-piece lineup. The current incarnation of The Shins can not only tear through old fan favorites like “Caring Is Creepy” and “So Says I”, but also shows off layers of development on the new material Mercer has penned.

In fact, the most surprising thing for longtime fans seeing the group for the first time in a while is how muscular and filled out The Shins sound is in a live setting now. Whereas Mercer might have occasionally been something of a quiet frontman, his confidence in himself and his ace band of veteran indie rockers has him revealing a much more showman-like style on stage.

Don't worry about the current lineup overdoing things, either. When the time comes to treat a classic song like “New Slang” with the delicacy it requires, for all their newfound power, the group handles that song with great finesse.

There are few touring rock bands able to deliver as varied a trip through indie styles as The Shins, something that makes them a concert worth seeking out.

3 stars (***): Overall, the performance was pleasant. Although I am not the biggest fan of the Shins they managed to produce an enjoyable show. It was a shame though that their hits 'New Slang' and 'Phantom Limb' both felt a bit slow, while the latter also seemed to be a vocal challenge for James Mercer. The crowd had a good time though and clapped and chanted along to their more well-known tunes. Big plus was the addition of the violins: the band gave me a more solid impression of musicianship when they showed to be capable of playing several instruments. The support act, Kid Wave, was a good addition to the show.

The Shins' 5th album, Heartworms, is a varied and interesting listen and was the same live.

Although it's a bit of a shame to see the band become Mercer & Co. these days, the lineup of musicians I witnessed on this tour was impressive.

The Shins always play a quality and diverse setlist, which I enjoyed in Berlin. This also included two or three fantastic twists on classic songs, which seemed to draw more out of classic tunes than ever before.

It wasn't an incredible gig, but was pretty good. I enjoyed it.

The Shins'concert in Amsterdam was quite the show. Having known and loved the band for their quieter songs of earlier albums, the show a great mix of both older and newer material, with the older material brought to life with spirit. The crowd and the band connected, and it was wonderful to see a group of friends on stage having fun with their music and their audience. It was a great evening in which The Shins proved that even after 20 years of work, their songs are still strong and have aged well.

I have been wanting to see The Shins for about 10 years now and they rocked it out so much harder than I expected!! They played a great mix of older songs as well as songs from their newest album, Heartworms. James was smiling so much and the whole band really seemed to enjoy being there, which made the show that much more amazing to be a part of. The stage setup was trippy and fantastic, the sound was perfect, and they gave us a nice long encore. I would see them a thousand times again if I could.

The Shins are the best band I have ever seen live. Some bands live are just 'eh, not so good', but The Shins live are amazing. Raw talent. James sounds so great on stage in person, and the whole band was having a great time preforming. Jon Sortland on the drums was rockin out with a huge smile on his face, it was great. Amazing concert, if you like The Shins you can't miss it. As a long time Shins fan, it made me very emotional lmao.

The Shins were great overall. They played a mix of new and old songs and appeared to be having fun. The sound was pretty good and the band was on point.

I didn’t particularly care for the opener, Foxygen. The performance wasn’t all that compelling. Then the singer made some comment about opening for the Shins in order to get more exposure. It sounded like he didn’t really want to be thwre. Completely missed the first band.

nerdrawkgirl’s profile image

The Shins are great, they put on a really good show. They played a lot of newer songs which I expected, but I saw some set lists from the earlier part of their tour and wished they played a set more along the lines of those. New songs are good though and they seemed to have fun on stage, partially covering American Girl by Tom Petty. 9/10, always recommend seeing the Shins. James Mercer still go it, great voice.

An awesome band who put on an awesome show! They sound amazing live and played a terrific set that featured songs from their new album generously intermingled with fan favorites like, "Kissing the Lipless," and, "New Slang." We've waited a long time to see these musicians and were not disappointed!

The Shins Announce Oh, Inverted World 21st Anniversary Tour

The post The Shins Announce Oh, Inverted World 21st Anniversary Tour appeared first on Consequence .

It’s been 21 years since The Shins released their debut album  Oh, Inverted World,  and to celebrate, they’re taking it on the road. The band will embark on a “21st Birthday Tour” of the record this summer, with support from fellow Portland band Joseph .

Officially released on June 19th, 2001, The Shins frontman James Mercer saw Oh, Inverted World as a departure from the ironic, detached lyrics of its time. “Everything was so tongue-in-cheek in the indie world of the ’90s,” the artist recalled in a statement. “I remember feeling a longing for some sort of romance in music again, something earnest, like a real attempt at some emotional language.” Looking back, the success of now-classic singles “New Slang” and “Caring is Creepy” suggest he wasn’t the only one missing the melodrama.

“The Oh, Inverted World 21st Birthday Tour” will see The Shins perform their debut from front to back, followed by a nightly rotation of additional fan favorites and deep cuts. The trek  begins on July 12th with a show in San Francisco, and from there, the band will hit the likes of Las Vegas, Austin, Atlanta, New York, Toronto, and more. The tour wraps up on September 16th with a hometown show at Portland’s P ioneer Courthouse Square. See the full list of dates below.

Tickets go on sale Friday, May 20th at 10:00 a.m. local time, but fans can register for a pre-sale here .

Last year, The Shins celebrated the 20th anniversary of Oh, Inverted World  with a deluxe reissue of the album, remastered by Grammy-winning engineer Bob Ludwig. Later this month, they’ll play Just Like Heaven fest alongside Interpol, Modest Mouse, M.I.A., and more.

The Shins Are Touring The Classic ‘Oh, Inverted World’ In Full For Its 21st Birthday

Adrian Spinelli

What better time to celebrate a classic album than when it becomes old enough to legally drink? OK, stay with me now, because The Shins’ 2001 album Oh, Inverted World is turning 21, and for this momentous occasion, the band is taking the album on a two-month tour of North America.

Led by singer James Mercer, The Shins helped shape the new millennium of indie-rock love songs with the 2001 release of Oh, Inverted World . Standout songs like “New Slang” and “Caring Is Creepy” seeped deeper into pop culture consciousness when they were featured in the 2004 film Garden State , because who can resist Natalie Portman telling Zach Braff that The Shins will “change your life?”

“Everything was so tongue-in-cheek in the indie world of the ’90s,” Mercer said in a statement. “I remember feeling a longing for some sort of romance in music again, something earnest, like a real attempt at some emotional language.”

You can relive the nostalgia starting July 12th in San Francisco, before The Shins cross the continent back and forth with these shows that promise a front-to-back performance of the album. Portland’s Joseph are the main support on the tour.

About this event

A Midsummer Fight's Dream is back for it's third edition! This is a tournament aimed at those less familiar or experienced with the HEMA tournament scene that want a low-stress, moderate-intensity place to explore tournaments. We will be having a social afterwards to heal tired bodies and minds.

This event we will be offering the following tournaments:

Beginner's Open Longsword Underrepresent Genders (women/non-binary/trans) Longsword Bar Brawl (small team melee event)

Alas a lack of time in the hall means Dusack will not officially be happening, but if we get our time right it might make an appearance

What do we mean by beginner? If you have won a medal at a HEMA scorecard registered event you may not enter. If you do your entry fee will be refunded and you won't be able to enter the tournament. N.B. The women's tournaments are NOT beginner only - we think it's important that people that want to enter these tournaments have every opportunity to do so.Each ticket entitles you to enter all tournaments (schedules will not conflict), plus the brawl.

All fencers participate at their own risk. Furthermore it is a condition of competing that you have insurance to cover personal liability (if you're a member of a HEMA club you likely have this but please check). If you're insured by the BMABA we are a recognised event under them so your insurance is valid.

The rules are available https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kK7-sB6C1ajKaNQd-oBg9659wKCWCQyooVUEh850JUc/edit?usp=sharing . In general they are close to the Wessex League rules with one addition - this is a moderate-intensity tournament, and thus suitable control and intensity is expected in all bouts. We're adhering to Wessex League's Gender Policy (in full http://wessexleague.org/rules/tournament-rules/ ) - in short the Underrepresented Genders tournament it is intended to be inclusive of women, non-binary and trans folks. If you feel this tournament gives you the best place to practice HEMA in a competitive setting you're encouraged to enter.

Equipment: For all tournaments you will need to provide your own protective gear and weapons. For the brawl dusacks will be provided, but please bring synthetic and/or rubber weapons you might wish to use.

For all tournaments the minimum gear is:

- CEN1 mask and overlay (with rigid protection on the back of the head) - a gorget with a rigid throat covering - 350N jacket - rigid protection on forearms, elbows, knees and shins - A groin protector for those with something to protect - A rigid chest protector for those with something to protect - There must be no exposed skin

For longsword heavy-duty gloves are required (SPES heavies, Sparring Gloves etc. Red Dragon's are not sufficient).

For the brawl, Red Dragons or Lacrosse gloves are fine. Any questions please contact [email protected]

MLB Umpire Had Funny Moment With Aaron Judge, Blake Snell During Yankees-Giants Game

Tim capurso | jun 3, 2024.

Home-plate umpire Jonathan Parra gestures to New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge during Sunday's game between New York and the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.

At 6'7", New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is one of the tallest players to ever put on an MLB uniform.

One umpire amusingly seemed to think that San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell forgot this fact during the Yankees' 7-5 win over the Giants on Sunday. Facing Judge in the top of the third inning with the count 1-and-0, Snell delivered a changeup near Judge's shins at the bottom of the zone, a borderline pitch for almost any other hitter, but one that home plate umpire Jonathan Parra ruled a ball.

When Snell appeared upset at the call, Parra amusingly gestured at Judge in a you-see-how-tall-this-guy-is sort of way.

Blake Snell upset the pitch was called a ball and the umpire points at Aaron Judge like "look who's hitting" 💀 pic.twitter.com/3vIX30SnZj — Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) June 2, 2024

That's too good.

Judge, one of the hottest hitters in the game at the moment, went on to work a four-pitch walk in the at-bat, finishing his day 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run scored.

Meanwhile, Judge's teammate Juan Soto belted a pair of home runs, including a go-ahead, two-run shot in the top of the ninth that ultimately powered New York to a victory.

The Yankees (42-19) own the best record in MLB heading into a six-game homestand against the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ranking the best and worst Euro 2024 away kits: Tintin, interlocking triangles and a Chelsea training kit

We cast our eye over the home kits for this summer’s European Championship and discovered they are not especially inspiring. But the good news is that the away kits, where manufacturers and designers tend to go a bit more ‘out there’ and thus create some more diverting designs, are much more interesting.

Some are great. Some are awful. Some are boring. Some are weird. Some are confusing. Some are fabulously glamorous. Some we don’t know what to make of.

So read on and judge for yourselves…

the shins tour schedule

It would seem churlish to review this Ukraine kit given the circumstances: it’s the same shirt they have been wearing since 2021 because their relationship with manufacturer Joma has frayed and is coming to an acrimonious end next month. Joma, a Spanish company but with strong Ukrainian links, caused some outrage last year when they signed a deal to supply kits to Zenit St Petersburg, which understandably didn’t go down well given they had promised to stop working with Russian clubs after the start of the war in 2022. They’ll be switching to Adidas after the tournament, following some schmoozing by the Ukrainian FA president Andriy Shevchenko.

Netherlands

the shins tour schedule

If you’re wondering where you have seen the pattern on the body of this Netherlands shirt before, I can tell you: it’s on the seats of a rural bus service, one that only runs three times a day and takes pensioners into town for the market. It’s just bad and almost worse is the explanation from Nike, which claims the design is ”inspired by the Dutch art movement De Stijl”. To which the counter-argument is: it might be inspired by it, but it bloody well doesn’t look like it. Seriously: Google De Stijl, compare it to this shirt and then give Nike a clip around the ear.

Czech Republic

the shins tour schedule

Quite dull, this. There’s nothing really wrong with going for a basic, plain design, but if you go with white as the main colour, then really you need something more bold as a trim so that it pops nicely. White with a sort of lightish blue doesn’t really do the job and ends up looking like a budget Marseille kit. It’s especially weird because the shade of blue on the Czech flag is much darker and bolder — why not just use that?

the shins tour schedule

The home shirt was rubbish, but at least it had some bold colours to make it stand out a bit. This is rubbish but also boring, giving the distinct impression that whoever at Nike was given the job of designing Slovakia’s gear left it until the last minute and said “that’ll do” at least once. A shame and once again proof that it’s not always a good thing for a smaller nation to get a major manufacturer to do their kits.

the shins tour schedule

Do kit designers think black jerseys are intimidating? It’s the only real explanation for their apparent fascination with producing kits like this. It’s a reverse of the home shirt, but with all the good parts lost in the dark: the panels down the middle and on the sleeves are so shiny that they look like cheap leather and you can’t see the patterns on the main body because they’re only a tiny bit lighter than the rest of the shirt. It’s a mess and it’s very silly.

the shins tour schedule

It’s a similar vibe for Italy, who have the same design for their away shirt as for the home, which I liked without really being able to explain why, but the away is somehow much worse. Maybe it’s the fact it looks like a Slovakia shirt. Maybe it’s the extra fussing in the shape of a slightly different collar. Maybe it’s the fact that having the red, white and green as the three Adidas stripes on the sleeve really works on a blue shirt but isn’t an option on a white. You can see what they’re trying to do with the green on one side and the red on the other, but it just ends up looking quite odd.

the shins tour schedule

Hmmm. The England home shirt is tremendous, a perfect lesson in how to do clean and simple in a really effective way. It looks like an England kit, it strikes the right balance between traditional and modern, and it just looks cool. This looks like a warm-up shirt and the pattern on the panels that run from armpit to hip resemble the branding for a regional leisure centre. The gold Nike logo and three lions look good and pop quite well from the deep blue background, but overall it’s a bit of a dud.

the shins tour schedule

Not really sure I can explain the logic behind this, but this Albania away shirt looks like a home shirt. Don’t you think? Like, the sort of home kit that a League One club might wear. Port Vale, basically. Is that a criticism? It feels like one, but it’s not necessarily meant that way. In terms of the actual design, it’s OK, but it does fall into that trap of a white shirt with a slightly darker background design, which looks fine close up but from a distance just makes the kit look a bit grubby.

the shins tour schedule

Perfectly fine, not especially good, not especially bad. It looks very much like a Belgium kit from the days when they were bad, before the Hazard/De Bruyne/Lukaku generation came through and they became too good to be taken seriously wearing Joma. The red, yellow and blue work well together in pretty much any combination… but now I’ve run out of things to say about it.

Switzerland

the shins tour schedule

The Swiss home shirt, with a truly odd band of darker colour around the lower back and buttocks area, is just weird, and while this is essentially the same setup, the light blue/white combo does at least make it look slightly less like the wearer has a nappy on. It’s actually pretty nice other than that strange panel, with the strong blue offsetting the white nicely and the swirly background pattern providing a decent little detail. Fine on its own, positively delightful in comparison to the home kit.

the shins tour schedule

Doesn’t this just look like a Chelsea training shirt from about 2006? You can just picture Franco Di Santo wearing it in a pre-season friendly against DC United at a stadium very obviously not built for football. It’s… different, I guess. Is it bad different or good different? Hard to say, but you don’t often see light purple and a gentle… turquoise (?)… on a football shirt, so you have to give them some points for originality, on the colours at least.

the shins tour schedule

Much like the home shirt, this is a pretty lazy template offer from Adidas, but it actually works much better in white than red, simply because the trim colours stand out so much more. The green is deep enough to really pop from the glistening white of the main body and the red stripes on the sleeve are the same. So absolutely no points for imagination/effort, but some points for the colours getting the best from an otherwise quite boring bit of business.

the shins tour schedule

Well that is undeniably a football shirt. Absolutely a football shirt. No doubt about it. Can’t argue with the fact that this is a football shirt. There genuinely isn’t anything else at all you can say about a red shirt with red shorts and red socks with a red trim and a red collar. Red red red red red red red. Really they should have just gone all out and made the national crest and the Nike symbol red, too. Red!

the shins tour schedule

This is also very red, but for some (not entirely unwelcome) reason, Nike has gone very sparkly and fabulous. Look at it! It basically has sequins. Maybe they’re going for a multi-purpose approach: the shirt that you can wear to a football match in the afternoon, but still works when you go to ABBA Voyage in the evening. I’m all for this sort of thing, we could do with a bit of extra camp in our football kits: who will be the kit manufacturer brave enough to put a feather boa on their shirt?

the shins tour schedule

This article is supposed to offer firm opinions about the designs on football shirts because that is an important thing that someone should be doing with their life. But here… I don’t know. I genuinely have no idea whether this is good or bad. Is it an excessively busy mess, resembling an art student’s first attempt at screen printing? Or is it a delightful way to offer something a little bit different, beautifully using the right combination of colours to produce a shirt that is simultaneously eye-catching and subtle? I don’t know. Genuinely no idea.

the shins tour schedule

I would have loved to have been in the pitch meeting when the Adidas designers suggested this one to the Mannschaft’s decision-makers: very much one to file under ”Sure, you can show them that one but they will never go for it”. But go for it they have and it’s good that they have. A bright pink shirt that fades into purple most definitely should not work, but it absolutely does and it’s quite difficult to explain why. But we’re giving Adidas plenty of points here for boldness, if nothing else.

the shins tour schedule

This looks like someone has challenged a modern kit maker to reproduce, with modern techniques and materials, a 1960s shirt. You can just imagine some lanky Austrian striding around the pitch in this, playing against Franz Beckenbauer or Bobby Charlton, wearing shorts that barely concealed their buttocks and violently kicking an opponent in the shins. Which is not a bad thing, especially when you incorporate the little dashes of colour — a colour that, officially, is called ‘electric peppermint’ — sprinkled around the torso. It’s really, really excellent.

the shins tour schedule

Hey, call me crazy, but I like these Slovenia shirts. What does the strip of small diamond shapes that stretch from the navel to just below the chest mean? No idea! Does that matter? Not at all! If the home shirt looks like a jersey a team of YouTubers would have made, this is more what the staff at an outdoor activity centre would wear for a five-a-side tournament. Possibly against the YouTubers. Against the odds, these are actually good.

the shins tour schedule

Here’s a perfect lesson in how ostensibly very minor details can make a shirt. This looks like a perfectly straightforward, nothing to really rave about but also quite nice jersey. Good bold colour on the collar, otherwise fairly uncomplicated. BUT THEN, you throw in that truly excellent detail on the sleeve trim, red and blue interlocking triangles, and we’re in business. A 6/10 raised to at least an 8/10. Sometimes people overcomplicate kit design, which isn’t inherently a bad thing, but it’s good to remember that simple with just a touch of something extra is more often than not the way to go.

the shins tour schedule

Do you think kit designers sometimes forget that, for the most part and with brief sojourns to the desert aside, that major football tournaments are played in the summer? So why not reflect that with a summery vibe with your shirts? That’s what this Spain away kit is: it’s a light white wine, it’s a picnic in the park, it’s a light and floaty dress to wear on a carefree afternoon in the sun. If this shirt was a band, it would be the Beach Boys. I’m more cheerful just looking at it.

the shins tour schedule

Typically, kit manufacturers tend to play it safe with their home shirts and get a bit more outre with the aways, but here Nike have flipped things, controversially fiddling with Croatia’s classic red and white checkerboard for the home, but for the change strip going with a rather more conservative blue effort, with slanted squares. And it works rather nicely, with the thin strips of red here and there setting the blue/dark blue off beautifully.

the shins tour schedule

The old joke, such as it was, went that there were no famous Belgians other than Tintin and Hercule Poirot — two fictional characters. Modelling a football shirt after Agatha Christie’s effete, moustachioed detective was going to be a challenge, so instead they have chosen Herge’s adventurer as the inspiration for their away shirt. It’s just a shame that Kevin De Bruyne has grown his hair, so doesn’t quite look like the boy himself anymore, but you can’t have everything. If you didn’t know what the inspiration was, then you might think it was a tribute to a Uruguay kit from the 1930s, but that doesn’t make it any less attractive. A maverick idea, but a tip of the hat to Adidas for trying it, never mind pulling it off.

the shins tour schedule

Yes, yes, yes. The nice thing here is that Hummel has clearly thought about the home and away shirts for Denmark as a piece: so they’re both similar, with the red and white colours for the main body and trim reversed, but there are enough differences to make it clear that some consideration has gone into it. The differences — a collar on the away shirt and a different cuff detail — are small but effective. Delightful.

the shins tour schedule

People will write poetry about this shirt. It’s only because of my deep respect for you, the reader, that I haven’t subjected you to a few stanzas of my own here. Nike reports that this design is a nod to French fashion houses, as well as French shirts of the 1980s and 2000s, but who really cares about that when you can just look at this, a thing of beauty? It genuinely might be perfect. Tres tres tres tres tres bon, deep and profound congratulations to all involved.
