Although this isn't the first time we've seen Tom Cruise in Persol sunglasses , it is the first time that we've seen him wearing this particular style and colourway. We hope that this trend continues as we think it suits him.

The 2017 film see Cruise play Barry Seal in "American Made" a former TWA pilot who starts working for the CIA in the early 1980s. The film is based on true events and chronicles Seal's involvement in the Contras scandal.

When Tom Cruise Saved the Ray-Ban Brand

One of the most iconic scenes of Tom Cruise’s career comes early on in the 1983 film Risky Business , in which Cruise—not quite yet a star— dances in his underwear to Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

Many people recall this scene as Cruise wearing sunglasses—specifically Ray-Ban sunglasses. He doesn’t. It’s an example of the so-called Mandela Effect , in which communal memories can change over time. But Cruise does sport the glasses elsewhere in the movie, and on the poster. And thanks to his charisma, the Ray-Ban brand experienced a renaissance that had sales shooting through the roof.

Ray-Bans actually have two iconic designs. The green, teardrop-shaped Ray-Ban aviators debuted in 1937 and were popular among pilots in World War II. They eventually found a niche among the general public, especially after General Douglas MacArthur wore them in a widely-circulated photo. (Bausch + Lomb, which makes the glasses, called them Ray-Bans because they “banned” UV rays.) But Ray-Ban also scored a hit with their Wayfarers, the chunky black sunglasses first introduced in 1952, which Cruise wears in Risky Business .

Prior to Cruise’s modeling of the style, however, Ray-Bans as a whole were struggling. Both the aviators and the Wayfarers were losing market share to sunglasses that were more emblematic of the 1980s, which had a tendency to ignore subtlety. The days of James Dean or Marlon Brando being Ray-Ban influencers had disappeared. In 1981, the company was selling just 18,000 pairs annually and was considering discontinuing them. In 1982, after fashion magazine GQ featured them in a spread, sales rose to 200,000 pairs. An improvement, but not a huge one.

Enter Cruise. In his first major starring role in Risky Business , Cruise portrays Joel Goodson, an ambitious teenager who uses his parents’ absence to both dance through the house semi-nude and start a brothel. Released on August 5, 1983, the film was a hit, and suddenly moviegoers wanted to wear what Cruise was wearing in the film. Sales of Wayfarers increased by roughly 50 percent to 360,000 pairs sold in 1983 and remained strong throughout the 1980s. By 1988, Bausch + Lomb was selling 3 to 4 million Wayfarers a year.

If that wasn’t enough to earn Cruise free shades for life, consider what else he did for the company. In 1986’s Top Gun , Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell donned the aviators throughout the film. Once again, audiences wanted to emulate his look, and sales went up 40 percent. By 1988, orders for 4.5 million aviators were coming in.

So was it Cruise, or a costume designer? According to Norman Salik, the vice president of public relations for Bausch + Lomb in 1988, the actor deserved the credit. Cruise “just likes our products,” Salik told the Chicago Tribune .

Cruise became so synonymous with Ray-Bans that there was actually some blowback. When Cruise made 1988’s Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman, director Barry Levinson was opposed to his star wearing the brand because Cruise was too closely identified with them. Maybe the Mandela Effect was already in action.

Like most fashion statements, the Ray-Ban Wayfarers and aviators fall in and out of style on a regular basis. Cruise, however, never seemed to lose his love for the brand. In 2013, as the star was greeted by journalists at the premiere of Star Trek: Into Darkness , he was asked if his sleek dark sunglasses were 3-D glasses for the film. “No, man,” Cruise replied. “These are Ray-Bans.”

News | HE TOOK A BREAK FROM RAY-BANS IN `RAIN MAN,` BUT TOM CRUISE IS

”Wayfarers” Cruise wore in ”Risky Business” and the aviator-style glasses he wore in ”Top Gun,” are pleased that sunglasses continue to be to Cruise what the trenchcoat was to Humphrey Bogart (now what label did he wear, and did anybody really care?).

Although Cruise has no official link with the Rochester, N.Y., company, his association with Ray-Ban in the public mind pays big dividends.

”Sales of Wayfarers (one Ray-Ban style) were 111,000 a year in 1982,”

says Norman Salik, vice president of public relations. After ”Risky Business” in 1983 and a number of other propitious placements, the company sold 3 million of the style in 1988.

Cruise`s string of hit films as well as one of the most aggressive

”placement” programs in the fashion industry have kept up public awareness and company sales. The company`s sunglasses appeared in 160 movies last year and are the shades worn on TV`s ”Moonlighting.”

”just likes our products,” but director Barry Levinson felt the actor was too identified with the brand and insisted his young star don something else in ”Rain Man.” For Salik, the next chapter of the story is happier. Cruise will once again wear Ray-Bans in his next film, ”Born on the Fourth of July.”

Looking for a suit on sale? No one is saying exactly what will happen, but Sears Roebuck & Co. is dropping out of the tailored clothing business and will phase out suits, sportcoats and tailored pants in 550 stores across the country by the end of 1989. According to a Sears spokesman, the retailer will be out of tailored clothing by 1990 except through the Sears catalogue. With the exception of the Johnny Carson and Robert Stock brands, the company carries mostly private label suits and sportcoats. Prices are typically $150 to $200.

In place of the suits, Sears will expand men`s sportswear, accessories, workwear and staples such as dress shirts and will emphasize more national brands, better-quality private-label sportswear and young men`s clothing. Just how the company will unload all that clothing, estimated to bring in $100 million to $150 million annually, was a question posed by DNR, a menswear trade newspaper. Warren Flick, Sears` vice president of men`s fashion, promised no special promotions, but told the publication ”a game plan is in place for bringing us down to our end-of-the-year deadline.”

In the ”have-a-heart” category, New York designer Eric Smith, the wacky and wonderful impresario of men`s socks, has given a $5,000 gift to Chicago House to help AIDS patients.

Smith, better known by his label and moniker E.G. Smith, has created eye- catching style in his collection, which he claims ”are all hand tie-dyed by hippies in upstate New York.” True or not, the $18 socks are popular gift items, particularly during the holidays, and Smith, in recent years, has donated $20,000 from the sale of the socks to charitable organizations working with AIDS patients around the country.

”It`s a way for me to use my product and company to give something back to the community that has supported me,” he said.

(Also, crossing three time zones didn’t seem to affect his schedule in any way either.) Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): While watching Charlie play blackjack, one of the casino security officers says that “no one can count through a six deck shoe”. In fact, this is quite possible for someone with just basic math skills to do using the “hi-lo” counting method. A security officer of any major casino should know this. Factual errors: The story line states that 8,095 Buick Roadmaster Convertibles were made for 1949. This incorrect; the actual total is 8,244. Crew or equipment visible: When Charlie, Raymond and Susanna are in the casino on the way to Raymond’s date, just before Charlie is asked to see head of security you can see in the mirrored pillar the reflection of a woman motioning extras to walk past the camera. Continuity: At the blackjack table after Raymond “takes” Charlie’s queen, Charlie doubles down with more chips than he originally bet. Double down bets are limited to the amount the player bet originally; you can double down for less than you originally bet, but never for more. Factual errors: While in the doctor’s office, Raymond gives the square root of 2130 as 46.15192304. The square root of 2130, however, is irrational and therefore never repeats its pattern or terminates. Therefore, if Raymond were able to do square root approximations in his head (and I guess that’s possible for someone if his ability), he would not have truncated the decimal where the calculator did. Errors in geography: Charlie and Raymond are driving east down Columbia Parkway. They are supposed to be heading to California. California is west. Charlie and Raymond are driving in the wrong direction.

The script originally had Raymond as happy and friendly, but after an initial reading Dustin Hoffman successfully lobbied for Raymond to be a withdrawn autistic. Steven Spielberg considered directing. He began making notes in order to prepare for the project. The reason he backed out is because his friend George Lucas needed him to start work on the third Indiana Jones film. So Spielberg left the project and gave his notes to Barry Levinson. After being interviewed by the psychiatrist, Raymond (Hoffman) leans his head against Charlie’s and says “My main man Charlie”. This was unscripted, and improvised by Hoffman. Raymond states that his underwear is from the K-Mart on Oak and Burnett. This address is actually for the Vernon Manor Hotel in Cincinnati, the hotel where Charlie, Raymond and Suzanna stay in the beginning of the movie. Raymond memorizes a phone book up to the names Marsha and William Gottsegen — Dustin Hoffman’s real-life in-laws. For in-flight viewing, several airlines deleted the sequence in which Raymond reels off statistics on airline accidents. Early in the film, when the lawyer is reading the will to Charlie, Charlie says “I definitely got the rose bushes, I have definitely got the rose bushes.” This foreshadows Raymond’s extensive use of the word “definitely” later on. Jake Hoffman, the boy at the pancake counter, is Dustin Hoffman’s son. Dustin Hoffman originally wanted Bill Murray to play Charlie. Hoffman was originally supposed to play Charlie, but he wanted to play Raymond. Raymond was also supposed to be mentally retarded, but Hoffman changed it to an autistic savant. Hoffman fought for the ending where Raymond goes back to Wallbrook, even though the screenwriters both wanted him to end up with Charlie. Hoffman thought it wouldn’t be true to Raymond’s character if they had him stay. J.T. Walsh was originally supposed to play the psychiatrist at the end of the movie. When he couldn’t, Levinson filled in, after Hoffman suggested it. Levinson said if he didn’t like the way it looked, he would have someone else film it. He ad-libbed repeatedly to “push Cruise’s buttons”. The script was originally written with Dennis Quaid and Randy Quaid in mind. Jack Nicholson turned down the part of Raymond. “Wallbrook” is actually Saint Anne’s, a convent that houses over 200 nuns. Cruise’s wearing Ray Bans boosted sales of that style 15%. During the shooting of the casino scenes, Hoffman would go off and play games like blackjack. After production was halted to look for him, someone was assigned to watch him during takes. Cruise always wanted to rehearse while filming. He and Hoffman rehearsed while driving to the set, and in their trailers during takes. They frequently switched roles. The scene in the airport was cut by most airlines on their plane trips… except Qantas. They even promoted one of the movie’s writers to first class once when he traveled on their airline. Levinson turned down the movie when it was first offered to him. He made Good Morning, Vietnam instead. After several directors backed out later, however, he took it on. The Amarillo, Texas motel scene was actually filmed at the Big 8 Motel in El Reno, Oklahoma. The motel maintains a sign used in the film that reads: “Amarillo’s Finest.” Guests sometimes request to stay in the same room where Raymond and Charlie stayed, room #117. The character of Charlie Babbitt was originally written as a 56-year-old. The movie playing on the TV when Raymond walks in on Charlie and Susanna’s lovemaking is Sweet Smell of Success. Barry Levinson admitted that Ray’s comment about Qantas being the only aircraft company to never have had a fatal crash was made up, and that he didn’t know if this was true. In reality, Qantas has had eight crashes, all prior to the making of the film, but they were all propeller-driven planes, not jets. The radio station slogan that Raymond is so fond of repeating, “97X Bam! – The future of rock and roll”, is from a real independent Ohio radio station, WOXY. The station still fields questions about the movie. During filming, Dustin Hoffman was unsure of the film’s potential and his own performance. Three weeks into the project, Hoffman wanted out, telling director Barry Levinson, “Get Richard Dreyfuss, get somebody, Barry, because this is the worst work of my life.” Hoffman would nab his second Best Actor Oscar for his work. During filmimg, both Hoffman and Cruise doubted the movie’s potential and jokingly called it, “Two Schmucks in a Car”. Director Cameo: [Barry Levinson] psychiatrist determining if Raymond should stay with Charlie or not. Reportedly one of Princess Diana’s favorite films. Director Trademark: [Barry Levinson] Ralph Tabakin (Shift Boss) has appeared in every Levinson picture from Diner to Liberty Heights. Dustin Hoffman was originally to play the part of Charlie Babbit, but after being moved to tears seeing a “savant” named Leslie Lemke (who is blind, retarded, and has cerebral palsy) play full concertos on the piano by ear, he decided to play the part of Raymond instead. In one scene, Raymond rattles off the lifetime statistics of former Cincinnati Reds first baseman Ted Kluszewski, during which he says “traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Harry ‘Suitcase’ Simpson.” This is not correct. Kluszewski was traded from the Reds to the Pirates for Dee Fondy; he was later traded from the Pirates to the White Sox for Suitcase Simpson. The elderly man in the waiting room who talks on and on about the Pony Express is Bryon P. Caunar, an 89-year-old local who was in the waiting room when the crew arrived to film there. He got to talking on his favorite subject, the Pony Express, and director Barry Levinson got such a kick out of it that he let Caunar keep on talking as the cameras rolled; all his dialog was spontaneous and not scripted. The building in the back of the “tree lined” path is actually a former seminary and is now a retirement center for Catholic priests in West-Central Ohio. The script originally called for two farm kids, but after Catherine Dougherty brought six of her seven sons to audition for the part, the script was re-written to include the six boys. The boys also have an older brother and one younger sister. The character of Raymond Babbitt was inspired by real-life American savant Kim Peek, born 1952, whom Rain Man writer Barry Morrow first met in 1986. When Barry Morrow won an Oscar for the screenplay of “Rain Man” in 1989, he gave his Oscar trophy to Kim Peek. Holds the unique distinction of being the only film to have won the Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear and a best picture Academy Award. Dustin Hoffman spent a lot of time with Kim Peek, who inspired the character and this movie. Being so impressed with Mr. Peek, he made his caretaker promise that he would “share [Kim] with the world.” Since then Kim Peek has been going all over the world impressing people with his incredible memory and ability to recall minute details from centuries of history.

History of Top Gun and Ray-Ban Aviators

Ray-Ban Aviators were created in the 1930s as pilot sunglasses to help shield aviators' eyes from the glare of the sun above the clouds. Over the years, Ray-Ban Aviators became an American icon, often spotted on celebrities from Audrey Hepburn and James Dean to Michael Jackson and Madonna.

In the 1986 blockbuster movie "Top Gun," Tom Cruise wore the same style of aviators that he wears in the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick." Thanks to the popularity of the original "Top Gun" movie, both sunglasses sales and interest in military aviation took off. 

The movie "Top Gun" is based on the U.S. Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course, also known as TOPGUN, at the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The school opened in California in 1969 to better train fighter pilots for combat in the Vietnam War. It became famous thanks to "Top Gun," and Ray-Ban Aviators also got their moment in the sun.

Tom Cruise, “Top Gun” and Ray-Ban

Before starring in "Top Gun," Tom Cruise already had ties with Ray-Ban. He wore a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers in "Risky Business," the racy teen comedy that came out three years earlier in 1983. 

In "Top Gun," Ray-Ban Aviators played a key part in Tom Cruise's style. His look was cool, tough and edgy. In addition to Cruise's Maverick, these other "Top Gun" characters also wore Ray-Ban Aviators:

In the beginning of the film, he was aggressive and heartless, but gradually he became more compassionate and caring towards his brother. This was reflected in his clothes, which became more relaxed and comfortable. He also started wearing darker and more calm colours that were in harmony with Raymond’s. The character’s image was contradictory and dynamic.

On the one hand, he was cynical, selfish and self-serving. He did not value family ties, only money and success. He didn’t understand his brother Raymond, who had autism, and initially wanted to use him to get his inheritance. On the other hand, he was smart, talented and charming. He had a good sense of humour, knew how to communicate with people and find a way out of difficult situations. He also changed over the course of the film, becoming more compassionate, responsible and loving. He learned to understand and respect his brother, and to find the true meaning of family and life.

The protagonist’s clothes were made of high-quality fabrics such as silk, cashmere, cotton and wool. These materials matched his role as a successful and ambitious businessman who valued comfort and luxury. He also emphasised his personality and style by choosing clothes from famous designers. He favoured neutral colours but also added some contrasting hues. These colours emphasised his mood and emotions in different scenes of the film.

After a long, protracted wait, Maverick: Top Gun is finally here. The sequel hits theaters this week amid a very weird time for movies. A slew of major blockbusters have all had their opening dates pushed due to COVID-19; a handful of recent theatrical releases, meanwhile, are getting fast-tracked to Video on Demand . But since the trailer dropped a whopping two years ago, Maverick has remained a shimmering ray of popcorn-chomping hope on the horizon, a high-octane, greased-up, beach-volleyball-playing, mach-two-with-your-hair-on-fire scorcher that promises a return to the heyday of the summer blockbuster . 

But the much-anticipated Top Gun sequel stands apart for another reason entirely. Cinephiles love to bemoan the dearth of originality in modern blockbusters; the most successful pictures, they’ll groan at you, are almost always paint-by-numbers sequels or lazy remakes or loose adaptations of some obscure Happy Meal toy from 1992 designed to tickle your brain’s warm nostalgic pleasure centers. Judging by the reviews , though, Maverick appears to be a shot-for-shot recreation of the original Top Gun (albeit laced with way, way more vertigo-inducing, real-deal stunt work )—and yet people are still losing their goddamn minds over this movie. Tom Cruise does not lose. His ego just keeps writing checks that his body miraculously continues to cash .

Along with Cruise, his old teeth-chomping adversary Val Kilmer, and a sweaty undercurrent of latent homoeroticism, the sequel is bringing back another vital piece of the Top Gun puzzle: Maverick’s iconic Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses. In the seven months after the first film dropped in 1986, sales of aviators reportedly jumped 40%. It’s easy to see why: everybody, a slightly damp Tom Cruise especially included, looks great in a pair of aviators . The teardrop lenses flatter all face shapes, and the slender metal frames sync up perfectly with everything from a tight white tee and Levi’s to a heavily starched and pressed dress uniform . Like Cruise himself, they’re ageless and eternal.

And if the buzz is to be believed, you’re going to want to buy your pair pronto. Assuming the excitement around this flick continues to build apace, and history repeats itself, waiting to see it before copping the shades will likely mean missing out on them entirely. (And remember— there are no points for second place .) Safer to secure ‘em now, before everyone and their uncle gets the same idea. Trust us: they’re going to look cool as all hell on an 80-foot IMAX screen, and they’ll look equally as cool on you all summer. They’re the best of the best , and they’ll make you better.

4K UHD Review: Rain Man

Tom Cruise achieved peak stardom in 1988. He’d had hits with Risky Business and Top Gun . He’d helped Paul Newman finally win an Oscar for The Color of Money . But ’88 he’d proven he was beyond bank with Cocktail , a fluff tale of a bartender. The film made a mint as people flocked to the theater to see Tom shaking up drinks. Tom Cruise could have just kept out cranking out light weight flicks that made millions based on his grin. But the actor wanted to do work with a bit of weight. That Christmas audiences saw the new superstar playing against another big name and taking the less flashy role. Rain Man had Cruise being a complete jerk to Dustin Hoffman ( The Graduate ). Audiences loved him even more in a serious and prestigious film than his time mixing up a vodka martini.

Charlie Babbage (Cruise) has imported four grey market Lamborghini sportscars from Europe that aren’t street legal in America. He has a lot of cash tied up with the cars. He can’t legally complete selling to buyers until the EPA signs off on their emissions. In the midst of this crisis, he gets a call that his rich father has died. He’s got something in the will. Charlie hated his rich dad so he’s eager to get the will read so he can collect. The reading turns into a disaster since all he gets left is a classic car from 1949 and rose bushes. The rest of the $3 million is being given to a mysterious beneficiary. He uncovers it is a mental institution. Why would his father do this? Turns out Charlie wasn’t an only child. He meets Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), his older brother. His father had Raymond institutionalized to help him. Raymond is an autistic savant. Charlie needs money fast and lures Raymond out of the institution and to a hotel. He tells the doctor that he’ll return Raymond for half of his father’s estate or else he’ll take his brother back to Los Angeles. This turns out to be hard since Raymond refuses to fly. The brothers embark on a cross country road trip that allows Charlie to get to know his long-lost brother, but also learn the challenges of living with someone who needs things on a regular basis such as watching The People’s Court and underwear from K-Mart. Can he really handle an adult who can’t be left on his own? At the same time, Charlie’s life is falling apart as he’s stuck between angry buyers and impatient creditors on the car deal. Things aren’t looking great for the Babbage brothers on their journey.

When Rain Man came out, the movie did get a lot of people interested in the nature of autism. The movie made us understand that not everyone with autism are autistic savants that can break a casino. Over the decades, it feels like I know more people who have children on the autism spectrum. It’s helped to understand their relationship from remembering how Raymond interacted with Charlie. It’s tough and you have to be beyond patient.

While the conversation always turns to Dustin Hoffman’s performance as an autistic person, we don’t pay enough attention to Tom Cruise work as Charlie. He is also a character that doesn’t emotionally connect to people. He treats everyone around him as something to use and abuse. He grabs Raymond as part of a plot for the money and not help them begin bonding as brothers. Shame there’s not a scene where Charlie gets examined to see if he’s on the Spectrum. Tom Cruise makes Charlie such a horrible character who proves capable of emotionally connecting during the road trip. He was doing more than putting on sunglasses and flashing a smile to make the role.

Rain Man proved to be a critical success when it was released before Christmas of 1988. Besides making major critics’ Top 10 lists, the movie won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original screenplay and Dustin Hoffman won Best Actor. It’s rather shocking that Tom Cruise didn’t even get nominated. Even more amazing is that Rain Man was top of the box office bringing in $172 million on a budget of $25 million. There was a time when people flocked to a film that wasn’t about superheroes although Raymond did have a superpower when it came to counting cards.

Rain Man remains relevant and entertaining after 35 years.

The Video for the 4K UHD (2160) is scanned from the original camera negative and approved by director Barry Levinson. The film looks great during the scenic parts of the car ride. The Audio is English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. You’ll hear clearly all the times Raymond declares he’s “an excellant driver.” The is also dubs in French 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and Spanish Mono. The movie is subtitled in English on the 4K UHD. The Blu-ray includes French and Spanish subtitles.

The Journey of Rain Man (22:09) has Barry Levinson was the fourth director attached to the film including Steven Spielberg. When Barry was given the script, Sydney Pollack was lined up to direct. Barry was merely giving his pal a few notes. A few weeks later, Barry was signing to direct. Barry Morrow points out the film was shot during the writers strike. He also said there was always an issue figuring out the proper tone for the ending. Barry wanted the film to be simplified and focused on the brothers. Ronald Bass had his sister help him with the autism element in his work on the script. Diane Bass points out that Raymond can’t change over the course of the film. The change has to all be in Charlie. This was from the 15th anniversary release.

Lifting the Fog: A Look at the Mysteries of Autism (20:15) has medical professionals discuss autistic savants. Barry talks about how his friend Bill and the real-life Rain Man inspired the script. We meet Joseph Sullivan who is a math whiz and Peter Guthrie who knows Rod Stewart hits.

Deleted Scene (2:13) has Raymond enter a drugstore looking for cheese balls.

Original Theatrical Trailer (2:16) has Charlie discover Raymond is his brother.
