Pool tips Tour de France 2024 | The annual dilemma of the dark horses

S ports fans are currently engrossed in their European Championship pools, but there’s no time to rest on their laurels. The annual Tour de France pool, arguably the most exciting one of the year, is just around the corner. Providing tips for this is challenging due to the high level of competition, but you can count on IDLProCycling.com to guide you through it again this year!

Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert won’t feature in this list, but there are no less than 172 other riders starting the Tour de France. Who among them can or cannot be considered as 'dark horse' tips? Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, the annual dilemma of the dark horses, which we’ve been grappling with once again this year.

Preview of the Tour de France

Favorites general classification (yellow jersey)

Favorites points classification (green jersey)

Favorites mountain classification (polka dot jersey)

Favorites youth classification (white jersey)

Santiago Buitrago - Bahrain Victorious

For our first tip, we wanted to select a potential general classification contender, but in this incredibly competitive edition of the Tour de France, that was not straightforward. Bahrain Victorious has put forward the young Colombian Santiago Buitrago as their key man. This isn't surprising, as he showed exceptional climbing skills in the lead-up to the Tour de France.

Teammate Wout Poels mentioned during the Tour of Switzerland that Buitrago had made significant progress, and who are we to contradict him? Enthusiastic cycling fans will already know the 24-year-old South American well, as he has podiumed in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and won two stages in the Giro. Could a strong general classification and the white jersey in the Tour be the next step?

Soren Waerenskjold - Uno-X

Next on our list is Soren Waerenskjold , another youngster. The Norwegian, with world titles in youth time trials, isn’t a complete unknown but has yet to prove himself at the WorldTour level. In the Giro d'Italia, Jonathan Milan was the sprint king and he shares similarities with Waerenskjold. Waerenskjold is known for producing immense power, which is unsurprising for a giant of 1.95 meters, weighing in at around ninety kilos. Additionally, he excels in time trials, as recently demonstrated in the Baloise Belgium Tour.

In his introductory video, Waerenskjold stated he sees opportunities in the flat stages of the first week but may have to share them with compatriot and teammate Alexander Kristoff. Kristoff also showed good form leading up to the Tour de France, but it’s possible both riders will get their chances as Uno-X is still competing for a WorldTour ticket in the mid-term and needs to perform.

Alberto Bettiol - EF Education-EasyPost

Then we have a man who has been dreaming about Saturday, June 29, since the start in Florence was announced: Alberto Bettiol . The former Tour of Flanders winner is the only true Tuscan at the start and would love to swap his newly acquired tricolor (which he won in that same province) for the famed yellow jersey of the Tour de France.

According to teammate Marijn van den Berg, Bettiol is "focused like never before" and that has already resulted in victories in the Boucles de la Mayenne, the Tour of Switzerland and the Italian national championships. And definitely don’t overlook Bettiol’s climbing abilities for the rest of the Tour, as he can peak like no other.

Oscar Onley - dsm-firmenich PostNL

Oscar Onley broke his collarbone three times in the past year (the last time being in the Amstel Gold Race this season) but now proudly stands at the start of his first Tour de France with dsm-firmenich PostNL. The Scot is part of a four-man mid-mountain block that the Dutch team is fielding, alongside Romain Bardet, Warren Barguil and Frank van den Broek.

Of this quartet, Onley is the most explosive, and he also handles the mountains well. He finished eighth in the overall classification of the Tour of Switzerland, an important preparatory race for the Tour. He still has something to prove in the grand tours after crashing out with a collarbone break on the second day of the Vuelta last year, despite winning the team time trial with his team.

Amaury Capiot - Arkéa - B&B Hotels

Arkéa - B&B Hotels currently ranks nineteenth in the standings that serve as a basis to grant WorldTour licenses after 2025, forcing the team to invest. Financially, this is already happening for next year with the arrival of Alex Aranburu, among others. Sports-wise, the team might spread its chances in the upcoming Tour de France.

Arnaud Démare was named the top sprinter at Arkéa - B&B Hotels, together with 'wingman' Dan McLay, but it was stated that other fast men, in particular Luca Mozzato and Amaury Capiot , will also get their shot. Given Démare's recent form and performances — his last top-ten finish was in February — the cards could easily be reshuffled, favoring all-rounders like Capiot and Mozzato. Capiot has already demonstrated his capabilities in several well-attended races this year.

Oier Lazkano - Movistar

Speaking of all-rounders, put Oier Lazkano on a bike when he is in race form, and you can count on the Basque being up front. The Movistar man is moving to Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe next year but will first have a free role in his Tour debut. His recent form, finishing ninth in the Critérium du Dauphiné and second in the Spanish championship, indicates strong legs.

Lazkano always goes on the attack, making him dangerous in both transition and mountain stages, as evidenced by his top-ten finish in the Dauphiné. One potential problem: he perhaps races a bit too eagerly, possibly leaving him with less energy in the final stages. Things like that can really make a difference in the Tour de France.

Chris Harper - Jayco AlUla

Jayco AlUla is counting on Simon Yates as their general classification rider in the upcoming Tour de France, but we’re also keeping an eye on Chris Harper . The Aussie has made progress since his transfer from Jumbo-Visma to Jayco AlUla, leading to a sixth-place finish in the Tour of Catalonia this year.

In his last two races — the Tour of the Alps and the Critérium du Dauphiné — crashes hampered his performance, but his Strava logs leading up to the Tour de France show he’s on track. Harper might emerge in the second and third weeks of the Tour, when he is on his preferred terrain.

Cristian Rodríguez - Arkéa - B&B Hotels

Riders who latch on and climb gradually via early escapes often don’t win popularity contests. Think of Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), who have achieved top-ten finishes in the Tour using this strategy. For this Tour de France, we nominate Steff Cras (TotalEnergies) and Cristian Rodríguez (Arkéa - B&B Hotels) to try the same.

They can certainly latch on, often placing among the top fifteen to twenty in stage results. Rodríguez knows what he and his team need to do: score points, which for this excellent climber means attacking in the mountains to secure a place in the general classification. Last year, he finished thirteenth in the Vuelta and has been competitive in tough races like the Tours of Oman, Catalonia, Romandie and the Tirreno-Adriatico this season.

Sandy Dujardin - TotalEnergies

Many teams are opting not to take a sprinter to the Tour, creating opportunities for B- and C-level fast men. There aren’t many in this Tour de France, but Sandy Dujardin of TotalEnergies might be one. The 27-year-old rider is making his grand tour debut and has the big shoes of former TotalEnergies star Peter Sagan to fill.

Dujardin recently finished fifth in the French championship and has shown form, with respectable finishes in the Tour of Slovenia, Paris-Nice and the Antwerp Port Epic. He also managed to keep up fairly long in races like Dwars door Vlaanderen and Gent-Wevelgem, making him a sprinter with some depth.

Johannes Kulset - Uno-X

The last spot on our list goes to this year's youngest participant, Johannes Kulset of Uno-X. His selection over Andreas Leknessund, Anders Skaarseth and Markus Hoelgaard might surprise outsiders, but within the Scandinavian team, there are high expectations for Kulset in the long term.

His preparation wasn’t perfect, as he suffered multiple fractures in his jaw and eye socket from a hard fall during the team’s altitude training. He recovered in time, but another setback occurred in the Tour of Slovenia: on the third stage, where he wanted to show himself, he was disqualified because of the super tuck position. To his dismay, but the jury was firm in its decision. As a result, he can't yet bring proof of concept to his first Tour de France, but certainly has the talent!

Tour de France 2024: Dates, times, routes stage details and where to watch

The Tour de France is one of the three grand tours – the others being the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España – that form the backbone around which the cycling season is structured.

This is the biggest and most important bike race in the world, with an estimated 80 per cent of most WorldTour team’s sponsorship income being based around the Tour.

Founded in 1903 by Henri Desgrange, editor of L’Auto newspaper, the Tour may not be the favourite stage race of the cycling cognoscenti but it is one that captures the imagination of the wider sporting public. As a result, the race is the biggest annual sporting event in the world with more live spectators than even the Olympics or football World Cup. Read the latest news before the race starts here .

How many stages are there in the Tour de France?

The second grand tour of the season comprises 21 stages and will be contested over 3,498 kilometres (2,173 miles). This year’s Tour consists of eight flat stages, four hilly stages, seven mountain stages with four summit finishes, two individual time trials and two rest days.

What time does the 2024 Tour de France start?

This year’s race gets under way with the 206km opening stage from Florence to Rimini on Saturday June 29, 2024. Racing starts at 11.40am.

How long does the Tour de France last?

The Tour de France last three weeks. After setting off from Florence on June 29, the race concludes with a 33.7km individual time trial from Moncao to Nice. Eschewing to traditional stage into Paris as a knock-on effect of the Olympic Games, this will be the first time since 1989 when the race has ended with a time trial.

Will the 2024 Tour de France be shown on TV?

Every stage of the race can be watched live on Eurosport, while terrestrial channels ITV4 and S4C will also be broadcasting the action. Live shows and highlights programmes will be shown at different times each day.

Alternatively, if you are stuck at work then you can follow the action, as it unfolds, right here with Telegraph Sport . Almost every stage will be live blogged by our team while selected race details and standings in the main classifications will also be published.

How many teams are there in the Tour de France?

Twenty-two teams will take part in the race. As with all WorldTour races, each team from the top-flight of professional cycling received an invitation and in the case of the Tour de France, all 18 of them are contracted to compete in the grand tour. In addition they will be joined by four UCI ProTeams – the two highest placed UCI ProTeams in 2023 (Lotto Dstny and TotalEnergies), along with Uno-X and Israel-Premier Tech who were selected by Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the organisers of the Tour.

How many people compete at the Tour de France?

Twenty-two teams comprising eight riders will start. In total 176 riders will be on the start line in Florence.

Latest news in the countdown to the Tour de France

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard has been dealt a blow after team-mate Sepp Kuss was ruled out of this year’s Tour de France after the American failed to recover from Covid ahead of this weekend’s grand départ.

Kuss was lined up to compete in a support role for Visma-Lease a Bike leader Vingegaard but fell ill during this month’s Critérium du Dauphiné. The winner of last year’s Vuelta a España has been replaced in the eight-man team by Bart Lemmen.

“This is, of course, very hard for Sepp in the first place. His contribution is always very important in the team, but then of course he has to be completely fit,” sporting director Merijn Zeeman said. “Unfortunately, we had to conclude together that this is insufficient.”

Meet the Stage Hunters of the 2024 Tour de France

Not every rider goes for the yellow jersey. Instead, some go hunting for career-defining stage wins—and sometimes, these races within the race are the most exciting.

109th tour de france 2022 stage 17

Okay, maybe that’s a bit much, but here’s the point: while the battle to win the maillot jaune is always the main focal point of the Tour, there are also races within the race, races that take place on each stage each day.

That’s why, for many riders, a single stage win is an achievement that defines their careers, forever making them known as “Such-and-Such, Tour de France Stage Winner,” a moniker that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

And there’s no more exciting way to win a stage than from a breakaway. Luckily, the 2024 Tour de France is filled with stages that look to be the perfect playgrounds for opportunists who don’t quite fit the mold of “pure climber” or “pure sprinter” and some teams who might be starting to feel the pressure that comes with having never won a stage of their own.

Here’s a look at some of the most prominent, accomplished (and desperate) stage hunters in the 2024 Tour de France.

Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)

76th kuurne bruxelles kuurne 2024

Van Aert wasn’t even supposed to be racing this year’s Tour de France. After completing what he had hoped would have been a successful run at the cobbled Classics, the Belgian was planning to head to the Giro d’Italia, where he would build a base for his bid to win a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. But he crashed violently at Dwars door Vlaanderen in late March, breaking his collarbone and several ribs–and ruining his plans for the first half of the season.

So now he’s riding the Tour, where he’s hoping to build form for the Olympics, to help Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard to a high GC finish, and to win a stage. After going winless last year before heading home early for the birth of his second child, the Belgian will be extra-hungry to prove to himself and his rivals that he’s still one of the best in the sport.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

86th gent wevelgem in flanders fields 2024 men's elite

Without Van Aert, van der Poel dominated the cobbled Classics, winning his third Tour of Flanders and then defending his title in Paris-Roubaix a week later, completing the Flanders-Roubaix double by winning both Monuments in the same week. The World Champion raced through Liège–Bastogne–Liège, then took a break before starting his own preparation for the Summer Olympics, a preparation that begins with the Tour de France.

The Tour will be the first stage race of the Dutchman’s season–he’s raced only seven times on the road so far this year–and we’re expecting him to head to the French grand tour with two goals: assist Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen in winning as many stages as possible (and the green jersey) and hopefully win a stage for himself.

Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility)

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 2

Cort is one of the best stage hunters in professional cycling, a rider who combines strength with tactical savvy–and a little bit of luck–to score important victories on all types of terrain. The Dane already has nine grand tour stage wins on his resume, and last year–while riding for EF Education-EasyPost–he won his first stage at the Giro d’Italia, meaning he’s now won stages in all three grand tours as well.

During the off-season, the 31-year-old transferred to Uno-X Mobility–a Norwegian wild card team racing its second Tour de France this year–where his primary goal will be winning the team its first Tour stage. We’ll be keeping an eye on him during some of the Tour’s transition stages (too hilly to end in a sprint, but not hard enough to be a day to shuffle the GC) during the second and third weeks. Breakaway stage wins are often hard to predict, but this is a rider who always seems to pull one off.

Ben Healy and Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost)

Cort’s a hard rider to replace, but if Healy and Bettiol have their way, EF Education-EasyPost won’t miss him for long. Healy–an Irishman–has been one of cycling’s brightest young stars over the past two seasons. He took his first grand tour stage victory at last year’s Giro d’Italia, and now the 23-year-old has his sights set on winning a stage at the Tour.

Bettiol–who just celebrated his tenth year with the team–has become the team’s spirit animal lately, racing with the kind of panache that inspires his teammates and delights his fans. The Italian was a popular winner at last weekend’s Italian National Championships and now gets to show off his new tricolore jersey in the Tour de France, where he’ll find several stages to his liking.

In general, EF Education should be one of the more exciting teams in this year’s race, with a roster stacked with riders capable of winning stages on any given day. Expect to see the team’s pink kit in the thick of the action on just about every stage.

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious)

115th milano sanremo 2024

Like EF Education-EasyPost, Bahrain-Victorious comes to the Tour de France with a roster that’s loaded from top to bottom with riders capable of winning a stage or two or three–so it’s hard to pick just one to feature.

But we’re going with Mohorič, the Slovenian who took an emotional stage win late in last year’s race and then gave what has to be one of if not the best post-race interviews in the history of professional cycling.

Like many successful stage hunters, the 29-year-old is an adept one-day rider–he won Milan-Sanremo in 2022 and last year’s gravel world championships–who already has three Tour de France stage wins to show for his efforts. With Spain’s Pello Bilbao, the Netherlands’ Wout Poels, and Great Britain’s Fred Wright, Bahrain-Victorious definitely has a team capable of equalling–and possibly bettering–its three stage wins from last year.

Derek Gee (PremierTech)

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 3

Gee’s big breakthrough came at last year’s Giro d’Italia, where the Canadian scored four second-place stage finishes (and took second in the Points and King of the Mountains competitions as well). But the team didn’t bring him to the Tour de France, which made sense considering the Giro was the first grand tour of his career.

But Gee’s been building his 2024 season around the French grand tour, and after a stage win and third-place overall finish at the Critérium du Dauphiné in early June, he’s primed to finally get his first grand tour stage victory–and on the sport’s biggest stage. Frankly, if the Canadian doesn’t win at least one stage, we’ll be shocked.

Toms Skujiņš (Lidl-Trek)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 17

Lidl-Trek is once again coming to the Tour on the hunt for stage wins, led by Denmark’s Mads Pedersen–who won stages in 2022 and 2023–and Italy’s Giulio Ciccone–last year’s King of the Mountains. But while Pedersen will serve as the team’s sprinter and Ciccone as the team’s climber, Skujiņš will have the freedom to hunt for a stage win n from the breakaway.

We’re eager to see how he does on Stage 9, the Tour’s first gravel stage. Second in Italy’s Strade Bianche this March, the Latvian has proven to be an effective Classics rider when given the chance. Stage 9 could be a perfect day for him to take his first grand tour stage victory–especially if the GC contenders spend most of the afternoon marking one another instead of trying to win the stage themselves.

Maxim Van Gils (Lotto Dstny)

63rd eschborn frankfurt 2024

Van Gils doesn’t get as much press as van Aert and Philipsen–and for good reason–but the 24-year-old Belgian could start to move the needle in his own direction with a stage win at the Tour de France. He rode well in his Tour debut last year–he took second on Stage 13 atop the Grand Colombier–and has three wins–and some other important high placings–so far in 2024. He’s one of the riders Lotto Dstny is counting on to win the team its first stage since 2020.

Anyone From Arkéa-B&B Hotels and Intermarché-Wanty

With Cofidis–who hadn’t won a Tour de France stage since 2008–winning two stages last year, the focus this year will be on two of three teams in this year’s Tour that have not yet won a stage of their own.

It’s been ten years since Arkéa-B&B Hotels first raced the Tour de France, and the French team still has no stage wins to show for its efforts. (In fact, it’s never had a rider finish better than sixth–which is, uh, not great.) This year, the team will be led by France’s Arnaud Démare, who twice won sprint stages at the Tour but might find it hard to win a third, given the depth of this year’s sprinters. In the end, the team’s best bet might be France’s Kévin Vauquelin, a 23-year-old Tour rookie who finished second at Flèche Wallonne in April.

And then there’s Belgium’s Intermarché-Wanty, who raced its first Tour de France in 2017–which means the team’s “We’re New to the Tour” grace period has ended. Always aggressive, the team has yet to win a stage, but with riders like Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay, South Africa’s Louis Meintjes, and the Netherlands’ Mike Teunissen–who won a stage and wore the yellow jersey with Jumbo-Visma in 2019–the team has the firepower and experience it needs to win its first stage this year.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.
