Lima travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Peru?

Peru has visa-free travel agreements with most countries, and foreign nationals including those from the  United Kingdom , United States,  New Zealand  and  Canada  do not require a visa for tourism purposes. Eligible foreign nationals will be issued a free visitor permit in their passport upon arrival.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

When is the best time to do a tour from Lima?

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts in one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours from Lima operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather. The advantage to travelling in these areas at this time is that many other travellers make the mistake of postponing their plans until the dry season, leaving you with more of Peru to yourself.

The best time to visit the infamous Nazca Lines or the coastal areas is from December to April, although the other months of the year are perfectly good times to visit as well. Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for cleaning during February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Can I drink the tap water in Peru?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru . I t's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating . Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.

How can I get to Machu Picchu?

Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.

From Ollantaytambo, the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:

  • Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)
  • Taking the equally scenic and rewarding Quarry Trail
  • Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

What people love about Peru Tours

It’s been very good all around. Thank you ?
Rafael made a perfect job in organizing a great tour. With his large network he managed also short changes in the itenary, so we got a lot of nice experiences during our 5 days. Thank you.
This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!

"We spent 4D/3N in the Paradise Lodge. It was a fantastic experience. We had two outstanding guides: Fernando and Saul. We had programs from early morning to late night. The highlight was the trip to the Sadokal Lake. It's simple amazing. The best fun was fishing on Rio Madre de Dios. We even caught some fish. The food was unbelievable in the middle of the jungle. What our travelers say about their Peru trips

Travel tips for trips to peru.

Something that makes planning Peru group tours easy (in addition to choosing a guided tour)? It’s a great destination to visit year-round. The best time of year to travel to Peru depends on your preferences. Keep in mind that the seasons are opposite of what we experience here in North America.

Machu Picchu lies in the Andes mountains, where the dry season lasts from April through November, and more rain can be expected from December through March. The rainy season in the Amazon rainforest can stretch a bit longer, from around October through April. The capital city of Lima is known for its mild temperatures and cloudy conditions—it has the most sunshine during December through March.

Guided trips to Peru are a fantastic way to see much of what the destination has to offer. As the third-largest country in South America, it’s full of many sites to discover. Must-visit spots in Peru include everything from ancient ruins that tell stories of past civilizations to sites with scenic views that’ll take your breath away.

Here are a few of our picks for some of the best places to visit in Peru:

Machu Picchu, the spectacular archaeological site and lost city of the Incas

Lake Titicaca, which lies high in the Andes where Peru meets Bolivia

Cuzco, the UNESCO-recognized ancient capital of the Inca Empire

Ollantaytambo, impressive Incan ruins in the heart of the the Sacred Valley

Lima , the colorful capital city that overlooks the Pacific Ocean

The Amazon, where you can explore the lush landscapes and wildlife of the rainforest

Interested in group tours to Peru? One of our expert Tour Consultants can help you get your adventure started!

Getting a taste of Peruvian culture can also be done by sampling its cuisine. When you travel on our tours to Peru, you’ll have the chance to try local specialties at included meals. You’ll find familiar staples such as quinoa, rice, beans, potatoes, and meat in many lunches and dinners—styles of preparation vary as you travel across the country.

A few traditional bites to try on Peru group tours include:

  • Ají de Gallina , a yellow pepper cream sauce served over shredded chicken, olives, and rice
  • Causa , yellow mashed potatoes layered with tuna or chicken
  • Ceviche, raw sea bass marinated with lime and chilies
  • Pisco Sour, a cocktail made with tasty white-grape brandy

On Peru tours at any time of year, prepare for hot and sunny days and the chance for cool temperatures at night. For all of our South America tours , we recommend that you bring loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered, as well as a comfortable pair of walking shoes. You should be prepared to get some steps in as you explore sites like Machu Picchu that are only accessible by foot.

A few other things to toss in your suitcase? Sunglasses, a sun hat, sunscreen, rain gear, and insect repellent. Before you head out on tour, you’ll receive detailed packing information tailored to your specific itinerary. You can also download the Go Ahead Tour Companion App so you can have all the info for your tour right in your pocket!

Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.

Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today they’re one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. They’re a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and they’re served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.

Causa Rellena

A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.

Best food in Peru

Peruvian cuisine is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you the best places to try everything from traditional meat skewers to Chinese style chifa.

15 Best Day Trips from Lima

Both the Peruvian capital and the nation’s biggest city, Lima offers a wealth of awesome new experiences.

A former Spanish colonial city, Lima has a long and vibrant history that is reflected in the many churches, monasteries, convents, and cloisters.

Modern shopping areas and slum districts provide striking contrasts, and you’ll find lush green parks, elegant squares, fascinating museums, stunning palaces, and more to explore.

Want to relax on sandy shores? The beach is within easy reach too.

When it comes to food, Lima is the ultimate destination in Peru for foodies, with menus offering bounties from the sea and ingredients sourced from the soaring mountains and the Amazon region.

A lively night scene keeps the fun going long after the sun has set.

There are many fascinating and diverse destinations close to hand too, letting you enjoy more of Peru with minimal effort.

Get out and experience more of the country with a range of fabulous day trips.

Caral, Peru

Located 120 miles from Lima, the UNESCO-listed ancient settlement at Caral stretches across a terrace that overlooks the baked landscapes of the Supe Valley.

One of the oldest archeological sites in the Americas, early inhabitants date back to around 2,600 BC. The impressive ruins remained forgotten and hidden for many years, found again in the late 1940’s.

It is only over fairly recent years that the true extent of the site has been discovered, with huge stepped pyramids, many temples, and sunken courtyards.

Visitors can also marvel at a range of ancient artifacts, including musical instruments fashioned from animal bones, geoglyphs, and jewelry.

Recommended tour : Caral: Full-Day Private Excursion from Lima

2. Nazca Desert

Nazca Lines

Board a small Cessna aircraft to soar above the spectacular Nazca Lines in the Nazca Desert of southern Peru.

Protected by UNESCO, the arid terrain is crossed by many gigantic lines and geometric designs, created almost 2,000 years ago by painstakingly moving the top layer of pebbly earth to reveal a lighter colored surface below.

The designs of creatures and objects are often of even greater interest to many travelers, with figures that resemble a huge whale, tree, hands, monkey, astronaut, spider, and various types of bird.

Mysteries still surround the desert, with scholars, historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, researchers, and scientists still unsure as to why the ancient people dramatically altered the dry landscapes in this way.

Fly over the Nazca lines : Full-Day All-Inclusive Nazca Lines Tour from Lima

3. Palomino Islands

Palomino Islands, Peru

Lying off the coast of Lima’s district of Callao, the Palomino group of islands is a top place for adventure-loving travelers.

The area was once home to fearsome pirates, convicts, seafaring folk, and soldiers, and the boat ride to reach the islands passes through waters that are today littered with shipwrecks.

You’ll also be able to spot the remains of an old offshore prison as small fishing boats bob on the waves.

Various bird species inhabit the rocky islands and waters, and you might even catch a glimpse of the cute Humboldt penguin; keen ornithologists will certainly be delighted.

A highlight for many visitors, however, is the opportunity to frolic in the sea with graceful and inquisitive sea lions.

4. Huacachina

Huacachina, Peru

Huacachina is a small village close to the city of Ica.

Although the village has around just 100 permanent inhabitants, thousands and thousands of people visit the area every year.

Join a day trip from Lima to marvel at the sparkling oasis and feast your eyes on the huge rolling sand dunes.

The water in the natural lagoon is believed to have healing properties.

As well as being photogenic and unusual, the area offers chances for adventure too, with thrilling sand boarding and bumpy rides in dune buggies.

The rural surroundings offer fascinating insights into local life too.

Available tour : Full-Day Ica and Huacachina Sand Dunes Tour from Lima

5. Ballestas Islands

Ballestas Islands

A fantastic trip for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, the Ballestas Islands are sometimes referred to as the Galapagos of Peru.

Situated close to Paracas on Peru’s southern coast, the craggy islands are home to a wide assortment of bird life, including Humboldt penguins, blue-footed boobies, tendrils, pelicans, terns, and cormorants.

Seals and sea lions are among the islands’ larger mammals.

You’ll also spot an unusual candelabra-like geoglyph etched into the large rock face, thought to be a signal for sailors from times gone by.

Suggested tour : From Lima: Paracas Reserve & Ballestas Islands Full-Day Tour

6. Lunahuana

Lunahuana

Reaching Lunahuana takes around three hours from Lima, but the thrilling activities and cool sights make the journey to Cañete Province more than worthwhile.

The gushing Cañete River is a top place for exhilarating rafting, and you can take to the skies with a canopy walk across the river.

The village of Lunahuana has charming streets that are brimming with craft stalls and small bars where you can indulge in a glass of Pisco and delicious seafood.

Major local attractions include the colonial-era church and bustling town square.

Available tour : From Lima: Full-Day Lunahuana Adventure Tour

Paracas, Peru

Whether you’re seeking sunny beaches, nature, or adventure, Paracas is a top excursion to take from Lima.

Nestled among arid hills, the town provides easy access to the wildlife-rich Paracas National Reserve.

Home to more than 200 species of birds – including condors, flamingos, and pelicans – almost 200 types of fish, and diverse plant life, larger creatures that call the park area home include marine cats, dolphins, sea lions, and Humboldt penguins.

There are archaeological sites throughout the beautiful reserve and plenty of opportunities to relax on sublime beaches before sinking your teeth into delectable seafood in a beachfront restaurant.

Ica City, Peru

A bustling city along Peru’s coast, Ica is especially known for its wine production.

Pop into one of the many wineries and vineyards to learn more about the local wine-making industry and sample locally produced drinks, including the country’s national beverage of Pisco.

The mysterious Museo de Piedras Grabadas, with its numerous engraved stone tablets, is one of the city’s more curious attractions.

Other places of interest include the Regional Museum of Ica, the town square, the scenic boardwalk, and the Cathedral of Ica.

9. Catapalla

Catapalla, Peru

The small settlement of Catapalla is just a few miles from Lunahuana; it’s easy to combine the two destinations for a varied and action-packed day trip from the capital.

Wine-lovers should head to the main square to visit the oldest artisanal winery in the valley.

A suspension bridge hangs over the raging rapids and there are several cute restaurants where you can enjoy a bite to eat.

10. Pachacamac

Pachacamac

Around an hour’s drive from Lima, Pachacamac is home to a large and fairly well-preserved ruined settlement.

There’s evidence that people lived here as far back as the second century and their legacy lives on in the diverse temples, graveyards, and pyramids.

Sadly, the site was ransacked by Spanish invaders in the 1530’s, though local priests made sure to hide all the gold and treasures before the Spanish arrived; the whereabouts of the valuables remains a secret even to today.

Hiring a guide is highly recommended to fully help you to understand the significance of the site.

Guided tour : Half-Day Pachacamac and Barranco Tour from Lima

11. Pucusana

Pucusana

The charming fishing village of Pucusana makes a pleasant change to the hustle and bustle of Lima.

Although many locals love the seaside village’s charms, it sees few foreign visitors.

You can enjoy a slower pace of life and the feeling that you’ve stumbled across a peaceful hidden gem.

The harbor is scenic; there are beaches where you can swim and sunbathe, and there are interesting rock formations to admire.

Local restaurants serve fresh and tasty seafood and you can immerse yourself in the lifestyle in a traditional Peruvian fishing community.

12. Huancayo

Huancayo, Peru

Situated in Peru’s central highlands, Huancayo is the capital of the Junin Region.

Named after the first group to live in the area, the Huancas, the area has been settled since around 500 BC. It was later taken over by the Incas and then the Spanish.

Today, the area is known as the country’s social and commercial center.

Modern buildings sit alongside colonial-era structures and it’s a good base to explore the highlands from.

Local attractions include the statue of the Virgin de la Mercedes, Identity Park, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, the sandstone needles of Torre Torre, and Constitution Square, and there are plenty of attractive parks, churches, craft shops, and markets to enjoy.

Hop a flight to maximize your day in the city.

13. Chosica

Chosica

Chosica is a charming mountain town within one and a half hours from Lima.

There are hiking trails close to hand, letting you get out and about in the great outdoors, and the stone forest of Marcahuasi fires up the imagination and arouses curiosity.

The main square is a hive of activity come evening, with games, rides, street food, and fun galore.

14. Punta Negra

Punta Negra, Peru

Although Punta Negra is a district of Lima Province, it still lies around an hour away from the heart of the capital city.

A fantastic destination for beach lovers, you can bask on gorgeous sands, swim in the refreshing waters of the sea, and try to harness the waves with a spot of surfing.

The area’s best beaches include El Puerto, Peñascal Beach, La Pocita, Santa Rosa, and La Bikini.

A number of top social clubs have branches here, providing top-notch entertainment, leisure, and relaxation options.

15. San Mateo

San Mateo, Peru

The thought of a four-and-a-half-hour bus ride may not seem like much fun, but with an early start, (and naps on the bus) San Mateo is a great day-trip destination from Lima.

Gaze in awe at the towering mountain of Huamanripa before hiking in scenic surroundings and tackling various peaks.

The colorful church of Iglesia Matriz and the gleaming white statue of Christ the Redeemer are remnants from colonial times, and the local markets sell a mixture of household essentials, ingredients for the kitchen, and crafts.

Watch a sporting match, musical event, or cultural show at Estadio Municipal De San Mateo and make new friends in local eateries.

Frequently Asked Questions

You might have some questions about our service and of course Peru itself. Our FAQs are aimed at helping you with any questions you may have.

Just click on any question and get the answer straight away!

What type of travelers take this tour?

Our 4 day tour is perfect for ALL types of travelers who are looking to maximize their time in Lima and see some of the most amazing sights in Peru in a short period of time.

65% of our passengers are female, the average passenger age is 31, and we have had people as old as 83, with plenty of families too!

Please note that children under 5 or pregnant women are not permitted on the Dune Buggy’s in Huacachina.

Why is Peru Hop better than trying to do it myself?

Simply put, it is very hard to do this itinerary by yourself without Peru Hop. Public buses do NOT go to Huacachina, they only go as far as Ica, so you would have to then arrange separate transport to and from Ica. As well as this, you would also have to coordinate getting to the bus terminals and from the bus terminals on your late return to Lima.

As well as all of this, Peru Hop offers a local onboard Travel Assistant fluent in English who you will simply love (read reviews about our fun and friendly guides all over the internet!) and Peru Hop is a great way to meet people from all over the world.

Finally, when you factor in everything included in our prices, you will see we offer great value for money, something which again is often commented on by passengers after their trip!

What should I bring on this tour?

Both Huacachina and Paracas are sunny towns. The following list of items are recommended:

  • Wind jacket/rain proof jacket (may get a little wet due to winds in the ocean)
  • Extra t-shirt
  • Sunscreen & sunglasses
  • Comfortable clothes and shoe wear
  • Lightweight pants

Where can I store my luggage while doing the tours?

Our onboard travel assistants will let you know where you can store your luggage for FREE! Another benefit of traveling with Peru Hop.

Of course valuables like cash and passports should always stay with you at all times, like with any bus or flight service!

Is advanced booking recommended?

Yes! Due to Peru Hop’s growing reputation as the best way to travel around Peru (which we are very proud of after 10 hard years), our trips can often fill up in advance, so advance booking is recommended. Check the availability using the green button above!

Can I change my ticket to another one after booking?

Sure, if you want to change your ticket for one that better suits your travel plans, please send us an email to proceed. Depending on the new ticket price and the timing of your request, the team will provide you with the available options.

Does traveling on Peru Hop help the local communities?

Yes, 100% it does.

Peru Hop was founded by Irish guys who moved to Peru and realized they had missed so much of this country when they were travelers, and so partnered with local Peruvians to develop a system to allow people discover the Real Peru.

By taking you to places most tourists don’t know about, you are helping local communities who often live below the poverty line to have a source of income. Simply buying some breakfast snacks or a water here or there really helps these communities.

As well as this, 95% of our staff are young Peruvians and we pay more than other travel and bus companies. They often use their salaries to help their families (here in Peru it is common kids, parents and grandparents to all live in the same small house).

Remember, most tourists either fly with billion dollar airlines or go on public buses owned by millionaires and make no stops between stops and don’t benefit local communities.

Don’t be a Typical Tourist, Discover the REAL Peru, and make this a win-win for you and for local Peruvians.
