Mississippi's pga tour event may feel impact of layoffs at title sponsor sanderson farms, share this article.

JACKSON, Miss. — The news that Wayne-Sanderson Farms laid off 40 employees at its Laurel campus could have deeper meaning for Mississippi’s only PGA Tour event.

Ever since Cargill and privately held Continental Grain formed a joint venture to acquire Sanderson Farms in 2021 for $4.53 billion, questions have swirled about whether the giant chicken company would continue to sponsor the Sanderson Farms Championships at the Country Club of Jackson.

Before the merger, Sanderson Farms had been a Mississippi-owned company, with its home base in Laurel. It had been run by long-time CEO and chairman of the board, Joe Sanderson, who championed the PGA Tour being in the Magnolia State.

Since Sanderson Farms and Wayne have been a part of the tournament, they have raised more than $17 million for charity.

The 2024 event will be the third since the merger into Wayne-Sanderson Farms. The original contract with Sanderson Farms to sponsor the tournament runs through 2026.

That combined with last year’s news of the partnership between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf could leave the Sanderson Farms Championship in doubt.

Steve Jent, the executive director of the Sanderson Farms Championship, however, says he is still bullish on the tournament in Jackson, which will be played the week of September 30 this year.

“I like our date with the opportunity to get some great players to come in here,” said Jent, who will be working his 11th Sanderson Farms event. “As far as beyond (2026), those are conversations that we will have to have as we go along, but I feel good about (Wayne-Sanderson Farms’) involvement, but we are also watching to see where the PGA’s relationship with a public investment fund goes and how that shakes out.”

There is some good news for sports fans locally in that Ole Miss football will be on the road that weekend and Mississippi State will have a bye, which should mean the opportunity for bigger crowds this year in Jackson.

“Hey, what I can control is what is right in front of me and that is this year’s tournament, and we feel really good about that,” Jent said. “A lot of this just depends of what the PGA Tour decides it is doing.”

But beyond this year and whether Wayne-Sanderson Farms will continue to be a sponsor and part of the tournament, Jent says he still believes the future is bright.

“I really do feel good about things,” Jent said. “Honestly, I don’t think the layoffs have anything to do with what we are talking about as far as the tournament is concerned. I really don’t.

“What I am most excited about is that Wayne-Sanderson Farms is going to continue to be a partner with us through the end of 2026.”

Jent went on to say there a lot things with the sport of golf that need to be worked through before anyone worries about anything else beyond this year’s tournament.

“Look, the players love our town, they love our golf course,” he said. “I want to make sure we are still hitting big numbers for our charities. I really am bullish on everything. I am. I feel pretty good about the overall state of the tournament.”

Secretary Morales met with IHG executives and got a firsthand look at the printing and manufacturing process. This visit is in addition to several tours of auto assembly plants (Honda, Subaru, and GM) that Secretary Morales has made throughout the state since the start of his administration.

“I take every opportunity to tour any business or production facility throughout the Hoosier state. These companies, like IHG, are key industry partners of my office.  I value these visits that provide a hands-on perspective. It’s a chance for me to watch plates roll off the line to ensure quality and compliance standards are being met to serve Hoosier consumers,” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.

IHG plans to launch officially at the new facility later this year.

Wayne County Arts Alliance announces 2024 studio tour with 15 artists, no fee

It has been 21 years since the public first was able to look forward each year to taking a tour around Wayne County and be amazed at the depth, diversity and richness of art being crafted by those so gifted, at their studios in the hills and dales of Wayne. The Wayne County Arts Alliance (WCAA) does it again July 12, 13 and 14.

The 2024 WCAA Artists’ Studio Tour features 15 studio locations as well as their own headquarters at the WCAA Gallery & Artisan Shop, 959 Main St., Honesdale. There is no cost. Take the self-guided tour, stopping in as many studios as you wish or all, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.

The Tour Preview Exhibit at the WCAA Gallery opens June 21 with a reception for the featured artists from 5 to 8 p.m. Sample the artworks of the artists in this year's tour.

WCAA Executive Director Janet Gaglione stated, "The tour provides an opportunity to meet Wayne County's established and emerging artists in their studios. Something for everyone!" These include paintings, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, photography, multi-media and more original artwork of all sorts.

The Tour Preview Exhibit will remain open for the three weeks prior to the tour, Thursday-Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Artists participating in the 2024 studio tour are Burton Bulles, Jill Carletti, Barbara Carpenito, Phyllis Chekenian, Denis Folz, Lisa Glover, David Harvey, Heather Hogan-Spencer, Beth Ellen Johnson, Nancy Palubniak, Matt Povse, Tom Ricotta, Victor Salib, James Spencer, Kevin Storms, Elizabeth Tilley, Derek Frey Williams, Susan Williams and Bill Westmoreland. Studio locations are spread out from Lakewood to Hawley.

"The Artists Studio Tour is the premier event which was the catalyst for establishing the WCAA," Gaglione said in a press release. "The Tour gives the public a rare opportunity to visit with some of the professional and emerging artists who call this area their home. Here is your chance to meet the artists and discuss their philosophies, inspiration and working techniques while viewing their most recent collections of artworks.

"And if you see something you want to own, take advantage of the artist's studio pricing," she added. "Don't miss this opportunity to visit Wayne County's diverse and talented artists right in their own studios."

The 2024 WCAA Studio Tour brochure with map and detailed information abut each artist is available at the WCAA headquarters at 959 Main St., Honesdale, area visitors' centers and other local businesses. You may also find this information and interactive map at waynecountyartsalliance.org .

The WCAA headquarters opened at 959 Main St. on Feb. 15, 2023. As stated on their website, "the Wayne County Arts Alliance is a not-for-profit organization entirely governed by volunteer members, a society composed of artists and people interested in the beneficial effects of the arts."

The WCAA may be contacted at 570-729-5740.

He has a close relationship with Tim and posted a heartfelt message on his birthday earlier this year the the wrote:  "Happy birthday to the ol’ man! You have been an inspiration both on and off the stage my whole life.  You have truly been a light on this Earth and for 57 years no less! Phew that’s a long time. Happy birthday Uncle Tim. Love ya!"

Timothy's label track debut "God Made A Country Boy," was written about his countryside upbringing and the lessons he learned.

Growing up in the country

In a statement about his upbeat hit, he gave insight into his family life: "I grew up working on our family farm in the summers, working in the fields, bush hogging, mowing, taking care of the horses, and I loved it," he said.

"It taught me a lot about responsibility. It was tough work, but a more simplistic way of life. My parents made a point of teaching me (and my siblings) about respecting others, standing up for beliefs and having manners."

Timothy continued: "And, if you disagree with someone, you can still be respectful toward them. When I heard this song, I really liked the idea behind it and knew I wanted to record it because it really showcases who I am as a person."

Tour and Saudis agree on some items with work still to go to finalize any deal

The PGA Tour and the Saudi backers of LIV Golf reached consensus on several items during its meeting its recent meeting in New York. Commissioner Jay Monahan cautioned players Tuesday night “there is still work to do” before any agreement.

Monahan sent players a memo after the PGA Tour policy board and the commercial PGA Tour Enterprises board held a joint meeting during the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

He did not share specifics, only saying the goal was to develop “a shared vision for the future of professional golf” that gives players the best global opportunities.

The meeting with Yasir Al-Rumayyan , governor of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, and PGA Tour Enterprises board members including Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy, was May 11.

Monahan also announced a few tweaks for the PGA Tour schedule in 2025, while saying the revamped model that caters to the top performers from the previous year are still creating roughly the same level of turnover.

One big change involves Woods. The board approved an additional sponsor exemption in the $20 million signature events specifically for Woods “as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement” of 80-plus wins in his career.

Image

Woods has played only four times this year — three majors and taking one of the four sponsor exemptions for his Genesis Invitational at Riviera, where he had to withdraw with the flu.

The player-hosted signature events — Riviera, Bay Hill and Memorial — are the only small fields with a cut. Monahan said the tour board and Player Advisory Council will study whether all the signature should have a cut. The board took no action.

The board did approve a minimum 72 players for the signature events, creating an alternate list based on the current FedEx Cup standings for the players not already eligible. Players complained this year when fields dipped below 70. In the Arnold Palmer Invitational this year, the 69-man field meant one player — Nick Dunlap — had to start the tournament as a single.

The Travelers Championship this week only has 71 players after McIlroy withdrew.

The top 50 in the FedEx Cup are exempt for all the $20 million events. More players competed in other events, particularly early in the season, which limited starts for players who had conditional status, such as those finishing Nos. 126-150.

The board said it would not reshuffle the ranking of conditional players next year until they have had a chance to play three or four times.
