UPDATED: A country-by-country guide to where you can travel with no COVID-19 test and/or vaccine required

Caroline Tanner

Coronavirus-related restrictions are falling right and left, and more and more countries are once again opening their doors to visitors thanks to decreasing COVID-19 case numbers and increasing vaccination rates.

Some countries still require unvaccinated travelers to submit a pre-arrival test or test upon arrival. However, many countries treat all travelers the same, regardless of vaccination status, and have eliminated entry requirements as a result.

Of course, the U.S. remains the large exception to the rule, still requiring a test within a day of departure for all who come into the U.S. (except those under 2 years old).

For travelers hoping to head up north, you're in luck: Canada dropped the pre-arrival testing requirement for vaccinated travelers arriving in Canada via land or air on April 1.

Although arrival testing requirements remain in place for unvaccinated travelers, as of April 25 unvaccinated children between the ages of 5 and 11 can skip the arrival testing requirement, provided they are accompanied by a fully vaccinated parent or guardian.

Also as of late April, fully vaccinated individuals no longer need to worry about wearing a face mask in public, nor do they need to quarantine if another traveler in their group develops COVID-19 symptoms. What's more, these people do not need to document a list of close contacts and places visited throughout their time on the ground in Canada.

Otherwise, all travelers 12 and older who are not vaccinated may continue to enter Canada by showing results of a negative antigen test taken within one day of arrival, a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure or proof of a positive PCR test taken within 10 to 180 days of entry.

Everyone must complete an online form via ArriveCan ahead of arrival. Know that you can be randomly selected for testing upon arrival at four airports.

Although Mexico briefly added COVID-19 restrictions in early 2022, the entire country is now designated as "green," indicating a low risk of contracting COVID-19 based on government data.

As a result, minimal COVID-19 restrictions are only enforced by specific states. The only major popular tourist destination currently enforcing a pandemic restriction is Puerto Vallarta , where masks remain mandatory. Elsewhere, travelers shouldn't expect much in the way of enforcement.

Incoming travelers are not subject to any entry requirements related to testing or vaccination proof to visit Mexico, though the U.S. Embassy in Mexico says health screening procedures may be in place at certain airports and other ports of entry.

Puerto Rico

On March 10 , the requirement to show either proof of vaccination or a negative test was dropped for domestic travelers to Puerto Rico, regardless of vaccination status, per updated travel guidelines issued by Discover Puerto Rico .

Just note that international travelers are still expected to adhere to the aforementioned U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention testing rule , as well as submit proof of vaccination (with a vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration or World Health Organization) to their airlines.

Capacity limits and vaccine requirements for both private and public establishments no longer apply, though individual businesses may choose to implement their own guidelines related to health and safety.

Additionally, visitors to Puerto Rico are no longer required to fill out the travel declaration form.

As of April 21, travelers to Chile do not face travel restrictions related to testing or proof of vaccination.

Instead, travelers must complete an online travel affidavit form within 48 hours of boarding for Chile and show proof of health insurance covering up to $30,000 worth of COVID-19-related expenses.

Other than those two requirements, you can enjoy Chile without taking any extra steps to visit, but remember that you may be randomly selected to take a test upon entering the country, per Chile Travel .

On March 1, Belize dropped testing requirements for fully vaccinated travelers to enter the country; Belize also removed all curfew mandates and outdoor mask mandates, per updated guidance issued by the Belize Tourism Board.

Unvaccinated travelers 5 and older (or those without vaccine proof) must continue to show results of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival or a negative antigen test taken within 48 hours.

Regardless of vaccination status, all international visitors must continue to purchase specific travel health insurance to visit the country as of April 7, per the tourism board.

In addition to purchasing the insurance, travelers must complete an online customs form provided on all flights to Belize and book their stay at a hotel or accommodation that has been approved by the tourism organization.

"Keeping abreast of the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic remains our priority. Eliminating criteria that were no longer relevant, such as a COVID-19 test for fully vaccinated visitors, will stimulate additional travel to Belize," Belize Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler told TPG via email. "We are cognizant that reducing costs for travelers is pertinent, as this is an important element in their consideration process when selecting a destination."

As of this month, travelers to Costa Rica have zero predeparture steps to consider, thanks to the elimination of the online health pass and travel insurance policy which were both formerly required for foreign visitors.

Even so, Visit Costa Rica still recommends travelers age 18 and older carry a travel insurance policy covering potential COVID-19-related expenses.

Currently, many public spaces — including sports venues, cultural and academic institutions and nightclubs — are operating at full capacity without vaccination requirements.

Americans do not need a visa to enter Costa Rica. However, they must possess a valid passport and a return ticket to exit Costa Rica within 90 days, per the Embassy of Costa Rica in Washington, D.C.

El Salvador

As of Nov. 17, 2021, the Salvadoran government dropped all testing and vaccination requirements for U.S. citizens to enter, per the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador .

Unlike most countries on this list, El Salvador has been open for quite some time, having resumed international commercial flights on Sept. 19, 2020, without quarantine requirements for incoming passengers. Local businesses remain open as they did pre-pandemic and no curfew is currently in place.

The only pandemic-related precautions travelers can expect to see are temperature checks upon arrival at airports, such as Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL) in San Salvador.

Summer 2022 is a great time to visit Croatia since the underrated European destination has removed its previous requirement for non-EU citizens to show proof of vaccination to enter.

Therefore, as of this month, there are no longer any pandemic-related restrictions for Americans visiting Croatia, though face masks are encouraged on public transportation.

Americans can visit Croatia without any of the predeparture or on-the-ground steps that were previously required.

Based on my personal travels, I would recommend visiting the Croatian islands of Vis and Split, though Game of Thrones fans may be partial to cities like Dubrovnik.

Earlier this week, Munich city leaders announced the country's famed Oktoberfest would return this year after a two-year COVID-19-induced hiatus, which is good news for vaccinated Americans hoping to join in on the fun come this fall.

However, entry requirements are set to change Oct. 1, when the country will only allow Americans who can show proof of receipt of three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine to enter. This means you'll need to be boosted at least three months after your second dose.

"Please verify that you qualify as fully vaccinated before attempting to enter Germany, as the definition of fully vaccinated in Germany is different from in the United States," according to the U.S. Embassy in Germany's entry and exit requirements .

Entry requirements apply to all incoming travelers ages 12 and older, meaning proof of vaccination is required for this group to enter Germany by air, land, or sea.

Vaccination rules do not apply to children ages 6 to 11 who, if accompanied by a fully vaccinated parent, may enter by presenting a negative COVID-19 test (either a PCR or antigen test) taken within 48 hours of arrival. Alternatively, this group can present proof of recovery from COVID-19 within the preceding six months.

Travelers under age 6 are not subject to any entry rules.

Note that travelers who have been in a virus-variant area in the 10 days before travel must present a negative PCR test, regardless of vaccination status. The U.S. is not currently considered high-risk or virus-variant area.

In line with much of Europe, entry to Italy has only become easier in time for summer travels.

As of May 1, tourists to Italy are no longer asked to show their version of a vaccine passport, known as a "green pass, " which was previously required to access most places throughout the country such as restaurants bars, hotels, museums and ski lifts.

This means vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers alike can enjoy those places equally without having to present proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative COVID-19 test.

However, unvaccinated travelers must still submit a negative predeparture test taken within 48 hours of entry to the country, while vaccinated travelers may enter by showing proof of vaccination within the last nine months.

Even with the relaxed requirements, masks are still to be worn on public transportation and in certain indoor spaces, including theaters, cinemas, concert halls and sporting events, through at least mid-June.

France made headlines throughout the pandemic for its inconsistent implementation of COVID-19 entry protocols for travelers, but it seems to have reached a conclusion regarding the steps tourists need to take to visit.

As of March 14, only unvaccinated or partially vaccinated Americans are expected to present results of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure for France, or a rapid test conducted within 48 hours of travel.

On the other hand, fully vaccinated travelers no longer have to take any entry steps beyond submitting proof of full vaccination (including a booster) to airlines and customs officials. France considers you "fully vaccinated" if you are vaccinated and boosted with vaccines by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson.

Additionally, all travelers must sign a document attesting they do not have any COVID-19 symptoms and complete an online EU Digital Passenger Locator Form ahead of travel.

Otherwise, based on my recent trip to Paris , things are seemingly back to normal, especially since masks are no longer compulsory indoors or on public transit .

Despite the confusion surrounding Greece's reopening plans earlier this month , the country no longer imposes vaccination requirements as of May 2 , meaning travelers heading to Greece this summer can do so without worrying about showing proof of vaccination or adhering to previous testing requirements.

Although Greece no longer requires proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative test to access any indoor or outdoor venues, an indoor mask mandate is expected to remain in place through June 1.

Thus far, unvaccinated travelers have been able to enter Greece but were restricted from accessing certain public spaces indoors, including dining venues, museums, nightclubs, theaters, cinemas and stadiums.

Ireland has scrapped almost all of its remaining restrictions related to COVID-19. The predeparture test requirement for vaccinated tourists was dropped earlier in 2022, but unvaccinated Americans still had to submit a negative test to enter.

As of March, however, all travelers may enter Ireland, regardless of vaccination status, and no testing at any time is required, according to U.S. Mission Ireland.

At the moment, only vaccinated Americans are eligible to enter the country, according to guidance issued by Dutch officials, and they can do so without submitting a negative COVID-19 test.

In order to be considered fully vaccinated, travelers must show proof of a booster shot if more than 270 days have elapsed since the final dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Full vaccination requirements are outlined here .

Otherwise, the only exception to the vaccination requirement is applicable to travelers who can show proof of recovery from COVID-19 in the six months prior to entry in order to visit.

As of April 7 , Americans are able to enter Spain by showing proof of full vaccination or recent recovery from COVID-19. Spain considers travelers fully vaccinated if they are boosted within 270 days of receiving their final dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Earlier this week , the Spanish Ministry of the Interior quietly extended current entry protocols for travelers through at least June 15.

Even so, unvaccinated travelers ages 12 to 18 may still enter by taking a predeparture PCR test within 72 hours of departing for Spain.

Testing and vaccination rules do not apply to travelers younger than 12. Despite announcing on April 6 that the country would ease restrictions for unvaccinated travelers, Spanish officials rolled back plans to change current entry protocols for this group.

All passengers (regardless of age) arriving in Spain by air or sea, including transit passengers, must complete an online Health Control Form before leaving for Spain.

As of last week, travelers to Austria no longer need to show proof of vaccination, recent recovery or submit a negative test to enter, per the U.S. Embassy in Austria .

Although zero COVID-19-related restrictions remain in place in Austria, it has been a long road to get to this point , as the country changed course on protocols many times.

Initially, in August 2021, Austria was among the first EU countries to set an expiration date for vaccination proof, requiring travelers to show proof of a booster shot 270 days following one's final vaccine dose. That winter, officials suspended tourism and implemented a country-wide lockdown, as many places around Europe and the U.S. experienced a surge in new case numbers due to the omicron variant.

It wasn't until February 2022 that unvaccinated Americans were able to resume tourism to Austria by taking a predeparture test.

"The "3-G" rule (vaccinated/recovered or tested) for arrivals to Austria was lifted on May 16, 2022," the Austrian Embassy in Washington said on May 16. "There are currently no COVID-19 related entry restrictions in effect for Austria."

As of this month, vaccinated travelers to Thailand face zero restrictions upon arrival in the country, avoiding any sort of testing requirements before or during their trip.

All travelers must continue to apply for a Thailand Pass online ahead of travel and purchase COVID-19 insurance that covers any pandemic-related medical expenses up to $10,000.

Bars, pubs and karaoke clubs will also reopen in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chonburi, among other areas, starting in June, as the country gradually reopens nightlife venues.

Despite much confusion over the exact date Vietnam intended to welcome back international travelers, including Americans, it should now be easier than ever for visitors looking to head to the Asian nation.

"Effective May 15, 2022, the Vietnamese Government no longer requires a negative COVID-19 test prior to entry into Vietnam," per the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam .

This is particularly good news for those travelers who previously wanted to visit but perhaps were hesitant due to confusion over the country's botched reopening plan, which was initially supposed to take place on March 16, though entry requirements were unclear regarding whether incoming travelers would be expected to quarantine.

Two months later, Vietnam removed all of the previously enforced testing, quarantine, health insurance and other entry requirements, so that travelers to Vietnam only need to complete the visa process ahead of scheduled travel, if applicable.

Americans will need to obtain a tourist visa before traveling to Vietnam.

"Effective March 15, 2022, the Vietnamese government has resumed pre-pandemic visa issuance policies," per the Embassy. "All previous visa restrictions have been lifted."

For U.S.-based travelers, the Vietnamese Embassy in Washington provides instructions on how to obtain a visa, while noting that it can be done online, in-person, by mail or by email.

Since March 2022, fully vaccinated travelers have been able to enter Cambodia without having to take any other predeparture steps, aside from obtaining a visa on arrival at both airports and land borders.

Vaccinated tourists to Cambodia, including Americans, can receive a visa upon entry, valid for use for 30 days. Unvaccinated travelers on the other hand, still have some hoops to jump through to enjoy Cambodia.

All unvaccinated travelers to Cambodia must continue to undergo a week-long quarantine at a location determined by the Ministry of Health, the charge of which depends on the type of visa issued.

After this seven-day isolation, air travelers must take a rapid test but travelers that entered via land borders will also be subject to a rapid test both pre and post-quarantine, according to the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia .

Bottom line

A number of other destinations have eased COVID-19 protocols while still asking travelers to provide proof of vaccination or take a test before departing their home country.

Overall, it seems countries are opening up to the idea of welcoming back international tourists with fewer and fewer restrictions.

This guide will continue to be updated as more countries drop rules and regulations, making it easier for travelers and clearing the way for international travel to more closely resemble what it looked like pre-pandemic.

Although many Americans are hesitant to travel abroad due to the looming predeparture test required to get back into the U.S., government officials have not indicated any plans to loosen the current policy as of May .

Frequently Asked Questions: Guidance for Travelers to Enter the U.S.

Updated Date: April 21, 2022

Since January 22, 2022, DHS has required non-U.S. individuals seeking to enter the United States via land ports of entry and ferry terminals at the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination upon request.  On April 21, 2022, DHS announced that it would extend these requirements. In determining whether and when to rescind this order, DHS anticipates that it will take account of whether the vaccination requirement for non-U.S. air travelers remains in place.

These requirements apply to non-U.S. individuals who are traveling for essential or non-essential reasons. They do not apply to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, or U.S. nationals.

Effective November 8, 2021, new air travel requirements applied to many noncitizens who are visiting the United States temporarily. These travelers are also required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. All air travelers, including U.S. persons, must test negative for COVID-19 prior to departure. Limited exceptions apply. See  CDC guidance  for more details regarding air travel requirements.

Below is more information about what to know before you go, and answers to Frequently Asked Questions about cross-border travel.

Entering the U.S. Through a Land Port of Entry or Ferry Terminal

Q. what are the requirements for travelers entering the united states through land poes.

A:  Before embarking on a trip to the United States, non-U.S. travelers should be prepared for the following:

  • Possess proof of an approved COVID-19 vaccination as outlined on the  CDC  website.
  • During border inspection, verbally attest to their COVID-19 vaccination status.
  • Bring a  Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative  compliant border crossing document, such as a valid passport (and visa if required), Trusted Traveler Program card, a Department of State-issued Border Crossing Card, Enhanced Driver’s License or Enhanced Tribal Card when entering the country. Travelers (including U.S. citizens) should be prepared to present the WHTI-compliant document and any other documents requested by the CBP officer.

 Q. What are the requirements to enter the United States for children under the age of 18 who can't be vaccinated?

A:  Children under 18 years of age are excepted from the vaccination requirement at land and ferry POEs.

Q: Which vaccines/combination of vaccines will be accepted?

A:  Per CDC guidelines, all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved and authorized vaccines, as well as all vaccines that have an Emergency Use Listing (EUL) from the World Health Organization (WHO), will be accepted.

Accepted Vaccines:

  • More details are available in CDC guidance  here .
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after your dose of an accepted single-dose COVID-19 vaccine;
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after your second dose of an accepted 2-dose series;
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after you received the full series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine (not placebo) in a clinical trial;
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after you received 2 doses of any “mix-and-match” combination of accepted COVID-19 vaccines administered at least 17 days apart.

Q. Is the United States requiring travelers to have a booster dose to be considered fully vaccinated for border entry purposes?

A:  No. The CDC guidance for “full vaccination” can be found here.

Q: Do U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents need proof of vaccination to return to the United States via land POEs and ferry terminals?

A:  No. Vaccination requirements do not apply to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs). Travelers that exhibit signs or symptoms of illness will be referred to CDC for additional medical evaluation.

Q: Is pre- or at-arrival COVID testing required to enter the United States via land POEs or ferry terminals?

A: No, there is no COVID testing requirement to enter the United States via land POE or ferry terminals. In this respect, the requirement for entering by a land POE or ferry terminal differs from arrival via air, where there is a requirement to have a negative test result before departure.

Processing Changes Announced on January 22, 2022

Q: new changes were recently announced. what changed on january 22.

A:  Since January 22, 2022, non-citizens who are not U.S. nationals or Lawful Permanent Residents have been required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the United States at land ports of entry and ferry terminals, whether for essential or nonessential purposes. Previously, DHS required that non-U.S. persons be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the United States for nonessential purposes.  Effective January 22, all non-U.S. individuals, to include essential travelers, must be prepared to attest to vaccination status and present proof of vaccination to a CBP officer upon request. DHS announced an extension of this policy on April 21, 2022.

Q: Who is affected by the changes announced on January 22?

A: This requirement does not apply to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents. It applies to other noncitizens, such as a citizen of Mexico, Canada, or any other country seeking to enter the United States through a land port of entry or ferry terminal.

Q: Do U.S. citizens need proof of vaccination to return to the United States via land port of entry or ferry terminals?

A: Vaccination requirements do not apply to U.S. Citizens, U.S. nationals or U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents. Travelers that exhibit signs or symptoms of illness will be referred to CDC for additional medical evaluation.

Q: What is essential travel?

A:  Under the prior policy, there was an exception from temporary travel restrictions for “essential travel.” Essential travel included travel to attend educational institutions, travel to work in the United States, travel for emergency response and public health purposes, and travel for lawful cross-border trade (e.g., commercial truckers). Under current policy, there is no exception for essential travel.

Q: Will there be any exemptions?

A: While most non-U.S. individuals seeking to enter the United States will need to be vaccinated, there is a narrow list of exemptions consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Order in the air travel context.

  • Certain categories of individuals on diplomatic or official foreign government travel as specified in the CDC Order
  • Children under 18 years of age;
  • Certain participants in certain COVID-19 vaccine trials as specified in the CDC Order;
  • Individuals with medical contraindications to receiving a COVID-19 vaccine as specified in the CDC Order;
  • Individuals issued a humanitarian or emergency exception by the Secretary of Homeland Security;
  • Individuals with valid nonimmigrant visas (excluding B-1 [business] or B-2 [tourism] visas) who are citizens of a country with limited COVID-19 vaccine availability, as specified in the CDC Order
  • Members of the U.S. Armed Forces or their spouses or children (under 18 years of age) as specified in the CDC Order; and
  • Individuals whose entry would be in the U.S. national interest, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security.

Q: What documentation will be required to show vaccination status?

A:  Non-U.S. individuals are required to be prepared to attest to vaccination status and present proof of vaccination to a CBP officer upon request regardless of the purpose of travel.

The current documentation requirement remains the same and is available on the CDC website . Documentation requirements for entry at land ports of entry and ferry terminals mirror those for entry by air.

Q: What happens if someone doesn’t have proof of vaccine status?

A: If non-U.S. individuals cannot present proof of vaccination upon request, they will not be admitted into the United States and will either be subject to removal or be allowed to withdraw their application for entry.

Q: Will incoming travelers be required to present COVID-19 test results?

A: There is no COVID-19 testing requirement for travelers at land border ports of entry, including ferry terminals.

Q: What does this mean for those who can't be vaccinated, either due to age or other health considerations?

A: See CDC guidance for additional information on this topic. Note that the vaccine requirement does not apply to children under 18 years of age.

Q: Does this requirement apply to amateur and professional athletes?

A: Yes, unless they qualify for one of the narrow CDC exemptions.

Q: Are commercial truckers required to be vaccinated?

A: Yes, unless they qualify for one of the narrow CDC exemptions. These requirements also apply to bus drivers as well as rail and ferry operators.

Q. Do you expect border wait times to increase?

A:  As travelers navigate these new travel requirements, wait times may increase. Travelers should account for the possibility of longer than normal wait times and lines at U.S. land border crossings when planning their trip and are kindly encouraged to exercise patience.

To help reduce wait times and long lines, travelers can take advantage of innovative technology, such as facial biometrics and the CBP OneTM mobile application, which serves as a single portal for individuals to access CBP mobile applications and services.

Q: How is Customs and Border Protection staffing the ports of entry?

A: CBP’s current staffing levels at ports of entry throughout the United States are commensurate with pre-pandemic levels. CBP has continued to hire and train new employees throughout the pandemic. CBP expects some travelers to be non-compliant with the proof of vaccination requirements, which may at times lead to an increase in border wait times. Although trade and travel facilitation remain a priority, we cannot compromise national security, which is our primary mission. CBP Office of Field Operations will continue to dedicate its finite resources to the processing of arriving traffic with emphasis on trade facilitation to ensure economic recovery.

Q: What happens if a vaccinated individual is traveling with an unvaccinated individual?

A:  The unvaccinated individual (if 18 or over) would not be eligible for admission.

Q: If I am traveling for an essential reason but am not vaccinated can I still enter?

A:  No, if you are a non-U.S. individual. The policy announced on January 22, 2022 applies to both essential and non-essential travel by non-U.S. individual travelers. Since January 22, DHS has required that all inbound non-U.S. individuals crossing U.S. land or ferry POEs – whether for essential or non-essential reasons – be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and provide related proof of vaccination upon request.

Q: Are sea crew members on vessels required to have a COVID vaccine to disembark?

A:  Sea crew members traveling pursuant to a C-1 or D nonimmigrant visa are not excepted from COVID-19 vaccine requirements at the land border. This is a difference from the international air transportation context.

Entering the U.S. via Air Travel

Q: what are the covid vaccination requirements for air passengers to the united states  .

A:  According to CDC requirements [www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/noncitizens-US-air-travel.html | Link no longer valid], most noncitizens who are visiting the United States temporarily must be fully vaccinated prior to boarding a flight to the United States. These travelers are required to show proof of vaccination. A list of covered individuals is available on the CDC website.

Q: What are the COVID testing requirements for air passengers to the United States?

A:  Effective Sunday, June 12 at 12:01 a.m. ET, CDC will no longer require pre-departure COVID-19 testing for U.S.-bound air travelers.

But the following countries where WOW Listers can plan safe, smart trips don’t require any vaccination or pre-trip testing. They are:

For more ideas on where to travel without hassles, check our list of countries open to U.S. travelers . For each country, we detail whether a test, a vaccine, or both are needed for entry. We also have a list of where vaccinated travelers can go with no pre-trip test .

We still recommend a test before international travel, of course—to ensure that you are Covid-free before you head overseas—but when you don’t need to get the test results on a strict timetable, that eliminates potential stress. The other way to eliminate stress is to use the right local fixer to safeguard and maximize your travels. That’s how you get a successful trip like those below, enjoyed by your fellow travelers whose trips we’ve been monitoring .

List of the 131 countries where 100% of pandemic travel restrictions have been lifted

You are currently viewing List of the 131 countries where 100% of pandemic travel restrictions have been lifted

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) have recommended eliminating all travel restrictions and requirements for nearly a year now (including vaccination requirements). Many countries around the world actually did follow the experts’ recommendations quickly, and not just when it suits them like Canada.

Of course, for vaccinated travelers, there are 190+ countries open with no test requirement , so that’s a lot of countries where travel is pretty much back to normal for most people.

tourist no entry

Here are the entry rules for the 211 countries/territories Canadians can travel to

(That guide to every country’s entry rules will continue to be updated regularly, sign up for free to get all updates, as well as many travel tips and deals !)

But we think it’s worth highlighting the countries that follow what the experts say and who are now over this: the 131  countries that have lifted all travel restrictions and requirements related to COVID-19 for all  travelers.

No test, no form; nothing. For everyone.

Maybe they deserve your travel dollars if you’re interested in encouraging them! Or maybe they should be avoided if you’re irrationally scared of people who are not vaccinated, as seems to be the case for many people in Canada, sadly.

Entry restrictions and requirements

As you know if you’ve read our summary of how to travel during the pandemic or our guide to the entry rules of each country , it’s very easy to know the rules of any country: they’re all on the same website .

And there’s nothing more beautiful to see than this message on that database.

tourist no entry

If you choose one of these 131  countries, travel is entirely back to how it was before the pandemic !

Since October 1 st , Canada joined the list, making your entry into Canada upon return from your trip simple too: there are no pandemic rules left at all!

Map of the 131  countries without any restrictions

So here’s the map of countries that have lifted all pandemic-related travel restrictions and requirements, and the zoomed-in maps for each region too.

List of the 131  countries without any restrictions

And here’s the complete list of those same countries.

(With the date everything was lifted there according to IATA, which doesn’t really seem accurate — we went to El Salvador in January specifically because they had already removed everything and we wanted to encourage them but IATA says February for El Salvador — but what matters is not the date, it’s that today all restrictions are gone in all these countries!)

Hi Andrew, Thanks for this site of yours, very helpful with important info for the unvaccinated traveller that’s been on hold for overseas travelling for too long. Im wanting to travel to Bali in May. Im getting a medical exemption thru Aust government to get into Bali. I have been told by travellers that it has been accepted getting through customs. I can only trust. I want to travel onto Thailand then onto Brazil to stop off at Foz Do Iguacu International Airport to see Iguazu Waterfalls. Have a look around then make my way to Peru , then onto panama , costa ric , elsavado , Guatemal Belize and Mexico . I dont want to fly into America. Whats yr advise for a 67yr young intrepid traveller thats unjabbed as we call it wanting to go to those countries without vax papers . I will be insured and will be taking all natural remedies plus ivamectum, hydroxchloroquine etc for health support. Tell me the pros and cons from yr m to show me the way safely perspective. I will be travelling with God the great spirit and my spiritual support family team. Surrendering to them in keeping me safe, supported and guide me on my adventure. Whats your feeling Andrew?

Hi, I certainly won’t give any medical advice because that’s not my area of expertise (and frankly, as a healthy not-overweight person in my early 30s, I stopped caring about COVID-19 a very long time ago, so I do not take any more precautions than I did before this pandemic). Your doctor can give you advice for your own health situation and hopefully put the risk into context too, which a lot of people are clearly very terrible at doing (as we saw for the past 3 years now).

In terms of travel, the pros are obvious: travel is amazing. That trip sounds amazing. In terms of the rules, the con is that one thing is for sure: the more countries you want to visit, the more time you’ll need to put in to look at the rules. Some countries still have vaccination requirements so there’s no way around it. Take the time to look at each country’s rules closely. For example, I was looking into going to Bali myself and I know they do require vaccination, but I haven’t looked into the exceptions and workarounds. You’ll have to do that for every country, unless you simply stick to all the countries that have removed all rules. That is more than doable, given there are so many countries that are over all this.

Thank you for this list and for supporting people who didnt cuck to tyranny. As an unvaccinated Canadian who has lost almost everything in the last 2 years (2021 when the vaccine tyranny began) Thank you. F*ck Trudeau and every MP who voted for these evil evil measures.

Hi, it’s our pleasure to keep all travelers informed!

' src=

New Zealand also is open to all https://covid19.govt.nz/international-travel/travel-to-new-zealand-by-air/

Nope, unfortunately they still have some rules on the only official rules database that matters so they do not qualify to be on this list yet.

As per “Spain Travel Health” website: “As of Tuesday, 20 September 2022, the Spain Travel Health (SpTH) portal, both the website and the mobile applications (APPs), will no longer be operational. It will no longer be necessary to complete the health control form to travel to Spain nor to show the SpTH QR code at the airport of arrival.”

Andrew, I would like to confirm if Spain now fits the criteria for this list. Is a PCR test still required in absence of vaccination proof, or is that removed altogether with the health form requirement? Thanks!

According to the official rules, there are still requirements unfortunately. There’s only one website that is reliable, the official source . It says vaccination is still required, or a PCR. Updated 9/20. So I would assume it’s still required until that website changes.

Can you share with us why you think Canada and the United States are still holding on to these travel restrictions. What is their reasoning? Thank you

It’s clearly not science, because if so the definition of vaccination would not be 2 doses from a year and a half ago. So it’s political science. As soon as politicians will believe they will score more political points by removing the useless restrictions than by keeping them to “punish” the evil anti-vaxxers, they will remove the useless restrictions.

' src=

Any update on when the US border might open to the unvaxed non nationals?

Hi, it seemed like they would change if they had any interest in being even remotely logical, but clearly, their science is even worse than expected. So hard to tell if it will change soon. They say the pandemic’s over, they say having separate rules for the unvaccinated makes no sense… and so naturally, they have pandemic rules for the unvaccinated only. It’s all just as rational as it’s been all along, basically :S

' src=

Hi, Yes, I want to know which countries are sanitary restriction free. Thanks for sharing this hard to find information all in one place. I’d rather travel to countries that don’t restrict your mobility and basic bodily functions.

' src=

AFAIK the Dominican republic is fully open since a long time as well.

Not according to the official source at least. It says filling out a form is still required.

Covid travel tracker: Which countries are allowing visitors from the U.S.?

U.S. vaccinations continue rising and Americans are flying in greater numbers than they have all year. But not every country is welcoming U.S. citizens.

NBC News is tracking travel restrictions in countries around the world. Here is what travelers need to know, as of Sept. 27. Note that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that you should not travel internationally until you are fully vaccinated .

  • More than 40 countries, including Italy, El Salvador, Gambia and Ukraine, are fully open to U.S. travelers and tourists.
  • Four countries are completely closed to Americans, including Uruguay and New Zealand.
  • The remaining countries fall somewhere in between, including countries with open borders but under a “Do Not Travel” advisory from the U.S. State Department, and countries open only to vaccinated travelers. There are also countries that offer exceptions for dual-citizens, residents or those with qualifying travel reasons.
  • More than 170 countries require a negative Covid-19 test from travelers.
  • More than 90 countries have some sort of quarantine requirement.
  • More than 60 countries have some sort of curfew in effect.

See the map below for each country’s travel details. This map will be updated in the weeks ahead as circumstances change.

CORRECTION (March 31, 2021, 3:45 p.m. ET): A previous version of the map on this article omitted South Sudan, which became a country in 2011. The map has been republished to include it.

From vaccines to testing: What travelers need to know before the new US travel system on Nov. 8

tourist no entry

  • The U.S. is launching a new travel system on Nov. 8.
  • Vaccinated foreign air travelers will need to show proof of full vaccination and test for COVID-19.
  • The new travel system also adds more stringent testing requirements for unvaccinated U.S. travelers.

The United States is about to make it much easier for vaccinated international travelers to visit.

The White House announced that a new air travel system will take effect Nov. 8, allowing entry for fully vaccinated foreign tourists .  The system is set to launch nearly two years after the U.S. began imposing travel restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 .

The move by the White House will essentially have the U.S. drop its travel ban on dozens of countries while also making entry more challenging for the unvaccinated. The new system will allow entry for foreign nationals only with vaccinations approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization and would add testing requirements for unvaccinated Americans.

Here’s what we know about the new travel requirements:

What are the entry requirements for foreign nationals?

Starting Nov. 8, non-citizen, non-immigrant air travelers   will need to show proof of full vaccination as well as a pre-departure negative coronavirus test taken within three days of travel before they can board a plane to the U.S.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Acceptable forms of proof of vaccination include:

  • Digital or paper verifiable record, such as a vaccination certificate or a digital pass with a QR code.
  • Nonverifiable paper record, such as a printout of a COVID-19 vaccination record or COVID-19 vaccination certificate.
  • Nonverifiable digital record, such as a digital photo of a vaccination card or record, downloaded vaccine record, downloaded vaccination certificate or a mobile phone application without a QR code.

The U.S. will accept nucleic acid amplification tests, including PCR tests, and antigen tests. The rules will go into effect for passengers on planes leaving for the U.S. at or after 12:01 a.m. ET on Nov. 8.

Airlines will collect basic personal contact information   from all U.S.-bound travelers for contact tracing. Airlines are required to keep the information on hand so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention   can reach out to travelers who may have been infected or exposed to COVID-19.

Masking will be required, but there will be no quarantine mandate for vaccinated travelers or unvaccinated children .

► US  travel bans: How COVID-19 travel restrictions have impacted families and couples

The change will make entering the U.S. possible for travelers from countries now listed on the U.S. travel ban, which prohibits entry for travelers who have been in any of the regions within the past 14 days. The travel ban  took effect in early 2020 and includes :

  • United Kingdom
  • Republic of Ireland
  • South Africa
  • The European Schengen area (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City)

Currently, the U.S. asks international air passengers only to get tested within three days of their flight to the U.S. and show either the negative test result or proof of recovery  from COVID-19 before boarding.

What about the land borders with Mexico and Canada?

New travel rules will also take effect for foreign nationals arriving by land or passenger ferry.

Starting Nov. 8, fully vaccinated foreign nationals can cross the land borders for nonessential reasons such as tourism or visiting friends and family . These travelers will need to verbally attest to their reason for travel and vaccination status and be prepared to show proof of vaccination  upon request. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will accept both digital and paper records showing proof of vaccination, including documents not in English.   Foreign nationals will also need appropriate travel documentation to enter the country.

CBP will spot-check travelers' vaccination documents, and those without documented proof of vaccination can be denied entry. Travelers under 18 will be exempt from the vaccination requirement as long as they are traveling with a fully vaccinated adult, according to Matthew Davies, CBP's executive director of admissibility and passenger programs.

The new travel rules will go into effect as soon as a port of entry opens on Nov. 8, or at midnight for ports that operate 24 hours a day changes will go into effect at midnight on Nov. 8 for ports that operation 24 hours a day.

U.S. citizens reentering the country should also bring a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative document, such as a valid passport, trusted traveler program card, enhanced driver's license or enhanced tribal card.

Entry rules along the border will change again in early January, with all travelers – including those traveling for essential purposes – required to show proof of full vaccination.

► US land borders: Travelers in Mexico and Canada plan their next US visit after new land border policy announced

Which vaccines does the US accept for travel?

The CDC has announced that vaccines approved for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and World Health Organization will be accepted for air travel. White House officials expect the CDC to approve the same vaccines for travelers entering the U.S. by land or ferry.

The FDA has authorized three COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use during the pandemic: Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer-BioNTech, the last of which has received the FDA's full stamp of approval.

Vaccines with WHO approval for emergency use include:

  • Johnson & Johnson
  • Pfizer-BioNTech
  • Oxford-AstraZeneca/Covishield

The CDC confirmed that it would accept a mix-and-match approach to vaccinations. Travelers who have any combination of FDA- or WHO-approved vaccines will be considered fully vaccinated.

The new travel policy does not accept foreign travelers who have had COVID and received just one shot in a two-dose series. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday that the administration will "continue to review" its entry requirements.

► Covaxin gets WHO emergency approval: Travelers vaccinated with Covaxin can enter US

► 'You feel lonely and left out': These fully vaccinated travelers want to visit the US. They may not be allowed in.

How do the new rules affect kids?

Foreign nationals under 18 are exempt from the vaccination requirement. Children under two will not need to take a pre-departure COVID test.

Kids 2 and older traveling with a fully vaccinated adult can test three days prior to departure, while children traveling alone or with unvaccinated adults will need to get tested within one day of departure.

Currently, all air passengers 2 or older, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents, need to show a negative coronavirus test to fly to the U.S.

What are the entry requirements for Americans?

The new travel system adds more stringent testing requirements for unvaccinated U.S. travelers.

Starting Nov. 8, unvaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents will need to take a test one day before departure and test again upon arrival in the U.S.

► New travel rules: What US travelers need to know about the new COVID rules for international flights

Entry requirements will not change for vaccinated Americans. They will still need to show proof of a negative coronavirus test taken no more than three days before departure.

Americans will not need to be fully vaccinated to board international flights to the U.S.

Are there any exemptions?

There is a limited set of travelers who are exempt from the vaccine requirement for entry.

Children under 18, certain COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial participants and travelers with adverse reactions to the vaccines – such as people who have had severe anaphylactic allergic reactions to a prior COVID-19 vaccine –  will be exempt.

People traveling on non-tourist visas from countries with less than 10% of its population vaccinated who need to enter the U.S. for emergency or humanitarian reasons are also exempt from the vaccine requirement. There are about 50 countries considered to have low vaccine availability at this time.

These exempt travelers will generally need to show that they will comply with public health mandates, including a requirement to be vaccinated in the U.S. if they plan to stay more than 60 days.

Unless they have recovered from COVID-19 within the last 90 days, unvaccinated travelers  must agree to be tested with a COVID-19 viral test three to five days after their arrival and quarantine for seven days, even if their post-arrival test comes back negative.

Unvaccinated travelers who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must also agree to self-isolate if their post-arrival test is positive or if they develop COVID-19 symptoms.

Unvaccinated children under 18 will not need to quarantine but will still need to take a post-arrival test.

► Who is exempt?: These select groups of unvaccinated foreign travelers can enter the US

The CDC will not give exemptions  to people who object to the vaccinations due to religious or moral convictions.

There will also be testing accommodations for travelers who can prove they recently recovered from the coronavirus. These travelers will need to show a positive COVID-19 viral test result on a sample taken no more than 90 days before their flight's departure and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or public health official saying they are cleared for travel.

The countries you can travel to without a vaccine

By Abigail Malbon

The 28 most popular countries you can travel to without a vaccine

Travel around the world is easier now, particularly for those who are fully vaccinated with an approved Covid vaccine – but some countries are allowing unvaccinated travellers to enter. Yet with restrictions constantly changing, how do the latest rules affect those who aren't fully vaccinated, and which countries are allowing tourists to enter if they're unvaccinated?

Where can I travel unvaccinated?

There are currently a number of countries that will allow visitors who have not been vaccinated to enter. A few of them are in Europe , and the others are slightly farther afield. We recommend always closely following UK health guidance, including having your Covid vaccine and booster if you are able to. Before travelling, you should regularly check government guidelines both for the country you might be considering visiting and for the UK when you return.

You can find the full list of countries allowing people to enter without a vaccine below:

Since 1 May 2022, unvaccinated travellers are able to visit the country without proof of a negative PCR or rapid antigen test. Passenger locator forms are also no longer required.

Arrivals may, however, be required to undergo a rapid Covid test on arrival. If you test positive on arrival in Greece, you (and those you are travelling with) will have to self-isolate for at least five days, either at home or in a hotel (this will be paid for by the Greek state). If you have no symptoms on day five you will be allowed to leave quarantine.

For holiday inspiration, see our guide to the best Greek Islands to visit .

Read the rules on travel to Greece .

2. Portugal and Madeira

Portugal ’s mainland and Madeira are open to travellers who have not been vaccinated, as long as they can prove they don't have coronavirus when they enter the country. To enter mainland Portugal, you will be required to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 or an antigen test taken within 24 hours of departure for the country as well as complete and submit a traveller questionnaire before departure for the country. Self-administered tests are not accepted. Your temperature will also be screened on arrival.

To enter Madeira, you must register on the Madeira Safe travellers platform and download a QR code to present to airport staff on arrival. You must provide proof of a negative antigen test taken within 48 hours of departure that has been administered by a trained healthcare professional.

Your airline may deny boarding if you cannot show one of these documents when you check in for your flight. Check with your airline before you travel.

Read the rules on travel to Portugal .

A blue mind

Unvaccinated adult travellers can enter Spain if they are able to show proof of a negative test taken before entering the country. Previously, only fully vaccinated travellers aged 12 and over could enter Spain from the UK, but the destination has relaxed rules slightly, so it is now accepting negative PCR tests taken in the 72 hours before departure for the country or negative antigen tests taken in the 24 hours before departure for the country in lieu of full vaccination in adults. However, those who cannot meet either criteria will not be able to enter.

As of 1 February, you need to have received your second jab between 14 and 270 days before travel to Spain and the Canary Islands to be classed as fully vaccinated. Children aged 12-17 no longer need to show proof of a vaccine, but will need a negative PCR test to enter.

Read the rules on travel to Spain .

Unvaccinated travellers can enter Croatia without showing proof of a vaccine or negative test. The requirement to fill out a passenger locator form also no longer exists.

Read the rules on travel to Croatia .

Unvaccinated travellers to  Cyprus  must provide proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure for the country or an antigen test taken in the 24 hours before departure for the country. Travellers over 12 may then be asked to take another PCR test upon arrival at Larnaca or Paphos airports, and remain in isolation until the result comes back (this should take roughly three hours). This costs €15–€19 and must be paid for by the traveller.

Read the rules on travel to Cyprus .

If you are unvaccinated and over 12 years old, you must provide a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours or an antigen test result taken within 48 hours pre-departure for entry to France.

You do not have to be fully vaccinated to visit the UAE. Unvaccinated arrivals to the Emirates must present evidence of a negative PCR test taken 48 hours before departure. Unvaccinated travellers from the UK to Dubai may be required to have a Covid-19 PCR test on arrival.

Read the rules on travel to Dubai .

10. Slovenia

Unvaccinated British travellers to Slovenia must provide a Digital Passenger Locator Form, but are not required to show proof of a negative test or vaccination to enter.

You do not need to be fully vaccinated to visit Turkey, but you must be able to show proof of a negative PCR test (taken no more than 72 hours before entry), rapid antigen test (taken no more than 48 hours before entry), or proof of a recent recovery from Covid-19 within the last six months. Arrivals into the country should also show an online form completed 72 hours before travel and will be subject to a medical evaluation for symptoms of coronavirus, including temperature checks. Arrivals may be subject to random PCR testing on arrival.

A Country-by-Country Guide to Reopened Europe

Members of the European Union are welcoming Americans. But there are still rules and restrictions to abide by. Here’s how to navigate them and what to expect.

tourist no entry

New destinations are no longer being added to this list , as many European countries are now open to American travelers. See an up-to-date list of countries open to U.S. travelers here .

On June 18, the European Union recommended lifting the ban on nonessential travel for visitors from the United States just in time for the summer season, which is crucial to the E.U.’s economy.

While the bloc aims to take a coordinated approach to travel this summer, the recommendation is nonbinding and member states are allowed to set their own requirements for travelers from individual countries based on their own epidemiological criteria.

Visitors from outside the bloc who can show documentation of having received E.U.-approved vaccines — including those from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson — will, for many E.U. countries, be allowed to enter without having to take a test or quarantine upon arrival. The bloc will also allow people to travel from countries it considers epidemiologically safe, regardless of their vaccination status. (Any passengers transiting through some areas where there has been a spike in cases involving the highly contagious Delta variant , including Britain, on their way to other European countries should check with the authorities in their final destination to determine whether they may be subject to additional rules.)

The European Union’s “safe list” also applies to Europe ’s border-free Schengen Zone, which includes non-E.U. countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

Here is a guide to some of the continent’s most popular tourist destinations, explaining what is required for entry and what to expect if you do visit. Ceylan Yeginsu

State of the virus

Like other countries in Europe, Croatia has seen daily cases on a constant decline after it experienced a third wave that appears to have peaked in April. According to World Health Organization data, daily deaths are now in the single digit range. Almost 30 percent of the population is fully vaccinated.

Entry requirements

Unlike some other European countries, Croatia makes no distinction between tourists and other travelers, applying the same conditions for leisure travel, essential family and business. Visitors from the European countries on the E.C.D.C.’s so-called green list (which varies constantly) can travel without restrictions . Those coming from European countries not on the green list must provide one of the following: a negative Covid test, proof of vaccination, or a certificate of recovery. Finally, visitors from outside Europe must provide the same evidence (either a negative Covid test, a vaccination certificate or a certificate of recovery), along with evidence of accommodations paid in advance or proof that they own property in Croatia, according to the government website . Travelers are advised to fill out the Enter Croatia form to speed up the process.

On June 1, Croatia and six other E.U. states began issuing vaccination certificate s to citizens to better streamline travel within the bloc. The free certificate, featuring a QR code, is available in digital or paper form, and indicates if a traveler is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, recovered from the disease or has received a negative virus test result. The rollout of the certificate program for the entire bloc (27 countries) was July 1. It is not yet available to travelers from the United States.

Currently, no direct flights operate between Croatia and the United States, but United Airlines and Delta Air Lines will launch seasonal direct flights from Newark Liberty International Airport and Kennedy International Airport in July, said Ina Rodin, an official with the Croatian National Tourist Office.

Medical facilities

Croatia has universal health care and the quality of medical facilities are in line with European standards. Rapid antigen and PCR tests are widely available, with contact information listed on Croatia’s Institute of Public Health website. Those who develop symptoms of Covid-19 while in Croatia should contact a Covid-dedicated call center by dialing 113 or one of the designated medical facilities .

Bars and cafes can operate, but customers must be seated outside. Indoor and outdoor dining is allowed in restaurants and hotels. While beaches, thermal spas, parks, zoos and most museums are open, nightclubs are closed.

The general mood seems relaxed, and people seem eager to return to quasi-normal life and welcome tourists. Croatia’s economy heavily relies on tourism, accounting for almost 20 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, according to 2018 data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

“Most people have a normal social life,” said Kresimira Kruslin, 30, a lawyer in Zagreb. “The general feeling is very optimistic. Young people feel comfortable going out for drinks and things like that,” she said. “Some people are more cautious than others, but I don’t know anyone who is scared.” Anna Momigliano

This country of 5.8 million was averaging 659 virus cases per day as of June 10, down from just over 1,000 per day in mid-May and well below last year’s peak of around 3,500. Testing is widespread and the positivity rate is holding steady at below 1 percent. Vaccinations are also picking up, with nearly half of the population having received at least one dose as of June 8.

Since June 5, fully vaccinated travelers from the United States, Canada and several other countries have been allowed to enter Denmark , including for tourism, with no requirements for testing or quarantine. Fourteen days must have passed since your last shot before entry. Any visitors who transit through Britain will need to comply with Denmark’s entry rules for Britain. More information (in English) is available from the Danish government, as well as on the website of the U.S. Embassy in Denmark. Travelers who cannot find the information they need online can call Denmark’s official arrivals hotline, +45 7020 6044.

Denmark’s hospitals are under little strain because of the pandemic. Testing is widespread and, at many testing centers, visitors can obtain a test free of charge. Check this list provided by the government to find the testing sites that serve foreigners.

Covid-related restrictions in Denmark have eased considerably over the past two months. Museums, amusement parks, movie theaters, stores, bars and restaurants are now open, although guests may be asked to provide either proof of vaccination or a recent negative test to gain entry. Restaurants and bars are now allowed to remain open until midnight, but clubs and other nightlife will remain shut until Sept. 1. Mask requirements are also being phased out: As of June 14, masks are required only while standing up on public transportation. Check here for the latest English-language updates on Denmark’s Covid-related regulations.

Karen Nedergaard, general manager of the Absalon Hotel and the Andersen Hotel , both in Copenhagen, said that she was happy to read the recent news about Denmark’s opening to vaccinated tourists from the United States and elsewhere. Normally, both of her hotels would be full for most of the summer, she said, but their current occupancy is around 35 percent. “I think we are going to see a pickup over the summer,” she said.

Anyone who makes the trip will have plenty of attractions to choose from. An immersive museum dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen — author of “The Little Mermaid” and “The Princess and the Pea,” among many other fairy tales and other works — opened on June 30 in the writer’s hometown, Odense. The capital city’s Tivoli Gardens amusement park will host Michelin-star pop-up restaurants throughout the summer. And in August, Copenhagen and nearby Malmo, Sweden, will co-host WorldPride and EuroGames , an LGBTI inclusive sporting event. Paige McClanahan

France’s positivity rate and case numbers have dropped steadily, thanks to the country’s accelerating vaccination campaign and a national lockdown that was announced at the end of March. As of July 7, 52 percent of the French population had received at least one dose of vaccine, and about 34 percent were fully vaccinated. Universal adult eligibility for vaccination opened up on May 31.

As of June 9, France is once again welcoming visitors from outside Europe. Passengers arriving from the United States and other countries on France’s “ green list ” are required to show either proof of vaccination or a negative PCR or antigen test performed within 72 hours of entering France. Americans wishing to travel to France can check the website of the U.S. embassy for more information.

Pressure on France’s health system has eased considerably, with the number of patients in the country’s intensive care units dropping from a high of more than 6,000 on April 26 to just over 1,100 on July 2. Covid-19 tests are now available to foreign visitors at a cost of 49 euros for a PCR test or 29 euros for an antigen test. Anyone who tests positive should isolate and call a local doctor’s office if needed; for medical emergencies, dial 15.

Nonessential stores are open, indoor and outdoor dining has resumed, masks are no longer required in most outdoor settings, and the monthslong national curfew has been done away with. Museums like the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay have reopened their doors, as have theaters, movie theaters and cultural sites across the country, including the Château de Versailles and the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey . Disneyland Paris reopened on June 17. Nightclubs are reopening in July. But visitors to France should still expect to encounter mask requirements and social distancing measures, including limited capacity at museums, restaurants, stores and other establishments.

The prospect of travel is as important to the national economy as it is to the French spirit. The tourism industry accounts for nearly 8 percent of France’s gross domestic product and supports some two million jobs. “We need, we want, in good health conditions, to remain the top tourist destination in Europe and the world,” said Clément Beaune, France’s minister of state for European affairs. “This is an economic issue for us.” Paige McClanahan

After a scary third wave that peaked in mid-April, infections in Germany have been plummeting. In Berlin — a city of 3.6 million people — there were only a couple of dozen new infections recorded on the July 4 weekend. Across the country, about 500 Covid patients were occupying I.C.U . beds. But there are clouds on the horizon: The Delta variant is thought to account for half of the new infections, and authorities say it’s not a matter of if the more contagious variant eventually dominates new infections, but when .

As of early July, nearly 60 percent of the population had received at least one vaccination shot, and nearly 40 percent were fully vaccinated. Within the European Union, Germany has one of the highest rates of vaccination.

Germany opened its border to U.S. tourists on June 20. Passengers arriving by plane must present a negative PCR test or proof of vaccination before boarding. Once on German ground, no quarantine is required. If you are not flying in directly, check the website of the Robert Koch Institute , the German version of the C.D.C., for arrivals from “at risk countries.”

During the pandemic a lot of resources were put into expanding coronavirus wards, so care is efficient and professional in Germany’s mostly state-of-the-art hospitals. Finding a good doctor who speaks English should not be a problem. However, currently, private doctor’s offices are inundated with people looking to get vaccinated, so if you have any kind of emergency, it is best to go to the emergency department of the local hospital. The phone number for medical emergencies is 112, or to find a doctor, call 116-117.

Covid-related restrictions are set by Germany’s 16 individual states, so rules will be a bit different in Berlin (which is its own state) and Munich (which is the capital of Bavaria). Expect to see plenty of outdoor dining, beer gardens, outdoor events and no curfews (unless infections in a particular district flare up). For certain activities, like museum visits or cultural events, you may need to make a reservation. The biggest asset in making your stay in Germany comfortable is your proof of vaccination (which you’ll want to keep with you at all times), because it allows you to skip any tests that might be required. If you are not yet fully vaccinated, you’ll have to make use of Germany’s network of quick test centers. Certain activities, like dining indoors may require a negative test result for those without proof of vaccination.

Germany’s international tourist board runs a handy website in English that provides an up-to-date overview of local rules in individual states.

Medical masks or even FFP2 (similar to N95) masks are generally required on all public transport, national train lines, stores and indoor public spaces. Children under 6 generally don’t require masks.

After what seemed like endless months of lockdowns, Germans are ready to get out and enjoy social and cultural life again. This could be one of the great seasons for travel in Germany. Christopher F. Schuetze

Greece recovered from its spring wave of Covid infections, but case numbers were on the rise again in early July. As of July 4, the average daily case count was just over 700, up from a low of around 360 a week earlier. Similarly, the share of coronavirus tests that are positive has remained low, at around 1.3 percent.

About 47 percent of the Greek population had received at least one dose of vaccine as of July 7, while about 38 percent were fully vaccinated. Those who work in the country’s tourism industry have been prioritized in the vaccine rollout, as have a number of the islands. The country’s health minister announced in May that residents of tourist-heavy islands such as Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu were next in line to receive their doses.

On arrival in Athens, travelers will need to present a certificate of vaccination, a negative coronavirus test no more than 72 hours old, or proof of recovery from Covid-19 within the past nine months. Passengers may also be subject to random rapid testing at the airport; anyone who tests positive will be put up at a local hotel for at least 10 days, along with their traveling companions, at the expense of the Greek government. Details on the rules of entry can be found here . Anyone planning to fly within the country will be subject to the same requirements as those arriving from abroad.

Greece, like Croatia and five other members of the European Union , began offering vaccination certificates to its citizens on June 1. The certificate program is not yet available to travelers from the United States.

Greece’s medical facilities, which have struggled from years of underfunding, were severely strained during the recent spring Covid-19 wave, but the pressures have eased. Any visitor who tests positive while in Greece should self isolate and contact a local doctor’s office if needed; in a medical emergency, dial 166.

Life in Greece is feeling closer to normal as the government has done away with many of the restrictions imposed during the country’s monthslong lockdown. Outdoor archaeological sites reopened in early spring, while restaurants and cafes once again began offering outdoor service (with a maximum of six people per table) on May 3. Greece’s museums have been open to all — with masks required and social distancing measures in place — since May 14. Open-air cinemas, spas, wellness centers and outdoor theaters are all welcoming guests, while ferry services to the islands are up and running, with limited capacity and mask requirements.

Greece jumped ahead of many of its European neighbors in opening up to vaccinated or Covid-negative tourists from the United States and a handful of other countries. The tourism industry accounts for roughly a quarter of total employment and more than a fifth of Greece’s gross domestic product, so restarting the industry is critical to helping the country recover from 2020, when the economy shrank by 8.2 percent.

“Unfortunately, after more than 10 years of economic hardship, tourism and food is our only industry,” Kostas Tzilialis, who works at a cafe and bookshop in central Athens, said recently . “We don’t produce cars or machines. So we have to open our industry right now. Let’s hope that people will be careful and the vaccines will protect us.” Paige McClanahan

Since January, Iceland has had only several hundred confirmed cases of the coronavirus. The daily count is currently in the single digits, after a relatively sharp rise in mid-April (peaking at 27 cases). As of July 6, about 75 percent of adult Icelanders had been fully vaccinated. Unlike some of its Nordic neighbors, Iceland has not suspended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, putting its efforts ahead of the European curve.

People with documentation of vaccination or previous infection do not have to undergo a test upon, or before, arrival. They just need to show their vaccine “passport” and 14 days have to have passed from the second dose (or 14 days from a Janssen/Johnson & Johnson dose) for a certificate to be valid.

Tourists who are not vaccinated need to quarantine for five days at a government-provided quarantine hotel (the stay is free of charge). Before arrival, they need to register and provide a negative PCR test that is no more than 72 hours old. More details on the rules of entry can be found here .

With one of the highest life expectancies in Europe, Iceland has an advanced health care system. As of July 6, the country’s hospital had no Covid patients.

In case of symptoms, visitors can call 1700 (on an Icelandic line) or +354 544 4113 (from any phone) to get tested. The local emergency number is 112.

Iceland has weathered the pandemic without ever resorting to the near-total social and economic shutdowns enforced in many other European countries. The success is partly a testament to its tiny population — about 360,000 people — but is also the result of decisive action by authorities, with rapid testing available early in the crisis. The country’s strict requirements still make it hard for everyone but vaccinated people to visit.

Gyms, pubs, restaurants, museums — just about everything — remain open. Tourism is the island’s largest job sector and the economic pain has been felt particularly by the thousands of migrants who came to Iceland during the previous boom years. While the unemployment rate is expected to remain high this year, local business leaders claim traffic is improving by the week.

On a chilly morning in the northern town of Husavik, two American tourists, Kevin Campbell and Susan Montgomery, from Oregon, were on their sixth — “or seventh” — trip to Iceland. “Locals value the presence of tourists these days,” Mr. Campbell, 69, said. Earlier that morning they had tried to enter Husavik’s iconic wooden church, but the door was locked. “Then a lady from a nearby store came running with a key this big,” Mr. Campbell said — indicating with his hands something that was the size of a milk carton — “and showed us inside.”

On Husavik’s harbor — made famous when the town was featured in the Netflix film “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” — two rival whale-watching companies were competing for business. Nearby, restaurants offered multiple versions of fish, with one chalkboard highlighting the word “fresh.” Egill Bjarnason

In Italy the pandemic has been in steady remission for months, after the country exited a third wave that peaked in March. New cases and deaths have been in decline. In this country of almost 60 million, daily deaths are in the two-digit range according to W.H.O. data. Hospitalizations have also gone down, according to the Italian research foundation, Gimbe. More than 55 percent of Italians are at least partially vaccinated.

Visitors from the United States and other non-European countries that are considered low risk (Japan, Canada, Australia and Singapore) need both a coronavirus test and a 10-day-quarantine. But Americans can avoid the quarantine if they take special “ Covid-tested flights ” that require taking a test both before and after the flight, and submit an E.U. digital passenger locator form . These Covid-tested flights are already available from New York and Atlanta to Milan and Rome, and will soon be offered to Venice and Naples. From countries considered high risk , only travel for essential reasons (such as business, study or medical care) is allowed, and no travel is allowed from India and Brazil.

Italy has one of Europe’s best health care systems. When northern Italy was severely hit in March and April 2020, hospitals were overwhelmed, but that is no longer the case. The percentage of intensive care units taken over by Covid patients is declining and is now at 23 percent, according to statistics compiled by Gimbe , the research foundation.

Italy regulates restrictions with a system that places each of its 20 regions on a white-yellow-orange-red scale, which can at times result in significant differences across the country. Currently most of Italy is listed as “yellow,” with minor restrictions. Bars and restaurants are open for indoor and outdoor service. Museums and theaters are open, but at a reduced capacity.

The mood is mixed with optimism, pandemic fatigue and excitement. On May 4 Prime Minister Mario Draghi gave a speech that energized the climate: “It’s time to book your vacations in Italy, we can’t wait to welcome you again,” he said, referring to international tourists.

Those working in the tourism industry say it worked. “Draghi’s announcement energized the bookings, we saw an increase just the day after,” said Giuseppe Artolli, 62, who manages COMO Castello del Nero, a castle-turned-hotel in Chianti.

Carlo Dalla Chiesa, 43, manages Milan’s youth hostel Ostello Bello, a popular destination for young international travelers, but also a place where locals go for their aperitif. Even though the hostel lost 97 percent of revenue during the pandemic, he said the owners feel very optimistic and now are expanding their business in Rome, Florence, Genoa and Palermo. He is convinced that youth tourism is going to boom more than “adult” tourism.

“It feels like 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell and suddenly all the young folks from East Berlin started to travel,” he said. “Just think of the kids who are 20 right now, and have spent two years in lockdowns, now they’re going to want to travel a lot, and on a budget.” Anna Momigliano

Netherlands

Although infections are diminishing, they remain relatively high in the Netherlands when compared to its neighbors. The weekly infection rate is nearly 50 per 100,000 people, a slight uptick from previous weeks. While the worst is over for now, more than half of the country’s 25 regions, including the regions of Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam, are rated as having a “concerning’ risk level.” As of July 5, about 60 percent of the population had received at least one vaccine dose; 36 percent are fully vaccinated.

On June 24, restrictions for visitors coming from the United States were lifted. Whether vaccinated or not, anyone coming from the United States can enter without a test. Once in the Netherlands, testing is unlikely to be required, but the Dutch have set up a good national PCR testing network if it should be required.

Like the rest of the country’s infrastructure, Dutch hospitals are modern and professional. Finding English-speaking doctors in the Netherlands, especially in the major cities, is not difficult. The phone number for medical emergencies is 112.

The country has begun reopening, with evening curfew, mask and crowd-size rules relaxing. Restaurants, bars, theaters, cinemas and museums are all open again, even though distancing rules will continue to be in force. Masks will still be required on public transportation, national train lines, train stations and other places, so keep one handy in your bag. Like much of the rest of Europe, the Netherlands suffered badly during the pandemic. But despite some areas of concern, the news that the country will finally shed most of its pandemic rules will make the Netherlands a joyous place to visit. Christopher F. Schuetze

In this country of 10 million people, the Covid-19 situation has fluctuated dramatically this year, forcing the authorities to adjust lockdown restrictions on a monthly, if not weekly, basis. As of July 7, 133 patients were being treated for Covid-19 in intensive care units, almost double the amount in mid-June. In a sign of how quickly things can change, a recent surge of new cases around Lisbon resulted in authorities ordering a weekend lockdown on June 18. Nighttime curfews have also been reintroduced in Lisbon, Porto and many other parts of the country. The health authorities said in early July that almost 90 percent of the new Covid-19 cases in Portugal were of the Delta variant, which is considered more contagious.

As of July 7, over half of Portugal’s population had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine — that includes 3.5 million residents who had already been fully vaccinated. The rollout was accelerated in June in Lisbon to counter another increase in the infection rate in the capital region. People from the age of 40 started getting shots on June 6, and those aged 30 on June 20.

Americans may now travel to Portugal with proof of a negative Covid-19 test, according to the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Portugal. The tests, also mandatory for visitors from almost all other countries, must be done before landing in Portugal. But people who drive across the land border between Spain and Portugal, which was reopened in May, are not required to have undergone a test, independent of their nationality.

Quarantine obligations only remain in place for visitors from countries that have an infection rate of more than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Portugal has a modern public health-care system, including good access to emergency services. Still, hospitals in Lisbon were overwhelmed in early 2021 by a sudden wave of Covid-19 that was much stronger than what Portugal had experienced the previous year. German military doctors flew to Portugal to help overcome staff shortages, while some patients were also flown from Lisbon to Austria to reduce the burden on local hospitals. The website of the Portuguese health ministry can help visitors locate the nearest Covid-19 testing center. For any medical emergency, dial 112, a toll-free number.

Portugal has gradually been lifting its lockdown restrictions since mid-March, when schools reopened. But with the emergence of infections traced to the Delta variant, some areas are imposing new restrictions. As of July 2, a curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. in Lisbon, Porto and other popular tourism spots will be in place.

In May, Portugal became one of the first European countries to reopen to British tourists, which form its largest set of foreign visitors. On May 29, the northern city of Porto welcomed thousands of English fans for the final of the European Champions League, without any quarantine requirement — even as Germany, France and some other European countries reintroduced quarantine for British visitors amid concerns that they could also spread the highly contagious Delta variant of the disease. But in early June, the British government made a U-turn and reintroduced a quarantine for people returning from Portugal, creating chaos for British tourists who had hoped to stay longer on vacation in the country. Spain’s virus numbers have been worsening since June, despite an acceleration of its vaccination program. As of July 7, almost 20 million residents had been fully vaccinated, equivalent to 41 percent of Spain’s population of 47 million. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently forecast that 70 percent of Spaniards would be vaccinated by Aug. 17.

Spain reopened to vaccinated American tourists — as well as visitors from other countries deemed to have a low risk of Covid-19 infection — on June 7. Travelers on a list of countries with a higher risk will have to show the negative results of an antigen test before flying to Spain. But visitors who drive across the land border between Portugal and Spain, which reopened in May, are not required to have undergone a test.

Spain prides itself on having one of Europe’s most extensive and modern public health care systems, and access to emergency services is very efficient. But the system was seriously strained in the spring of 2020, particularly in Madrid, where hospitals overflowed with Covid-19 patients. In recent months, the situation has improved significantly, albeit with some important differences between the regions.

For any medical emergency, visitors can dial 112, a toll-free number that works 24/7 across the country and can connect callers to the nearest hospital or health facility. Specific information about health services in the Madrid capital region is also readily available.

Travel across Spain has resumed since the government lifted a national state of emergency on May 9. While wearing a face mask in public spaces continues to be a nationwide obligation, whatever other restrictions remain in place are in the hands of regional administrations. These restrictions have been tweaked almost on a weekly basis, which means that Spain has turned into a mosaic of regulations that visitors should review carefully. On June 8, Valencia became the last region of Spain to remove its nighttime curfew. Some regions, however, continue to maintain other specific restrictions, and have, for instance, adopted different closing hours for restaurants and bars.

For many months, Madrid has been one of Europe’s most bustling cities, with bars and shops kept open, as well as art museums, cinemas, theaters and an opera house that was one of the few in the world to stage a full season, including a new production in May of Benjamin Britten’s “Peter Grimes.” Already, the restaurant scene and cultural life of Madrid is attracting tourists from Paris and many other places that had imposed far stricter lockdown restrictions. In fact, “Freedom” was the campaign slogan that is believed to have helped Madrid region’s leader, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, win a landslide re-election victory in early May.

But since the start of July, several regions in Spain have made U-turns and reintroduced lockdown restrictions, particularly to discourage young people from partying at night. As of July 9, all indoor nightclubs will close again in Catalonia, the northeastern region whose capital is Barcelona. The central government is also reviewing demands from some regional politicians to reimpose rules such as the compulsory wearing of face masks outdoors, which stopped being mandatory on June 26. Raphael Minder

Switzerland

Infections have dropped steadily since mid-April, while vaccinations are also picking up pace, with about 52 percent of the population having received at least one dose as of July 7.

As of June 26, travelers arriving from the United States and other countries that are no longer deemed “high risk” are allowed to enter Switzerland provided that they can show proof of full vaccination, proof of recovery from a Covid-19 infection, or a recent negative virus test. More information on the entry requirements is available from the Swiss government .

Switzerland’s superb health care system is currently under little strain because of the pandemic. The Swiss government has a list of testing centers that travelers can consult. Anyone who tests positive while in the country should follow the government’s instructions for isolation . In a medical emergency, dial 144.

Switzerland’s latest round of lockdown easing took effect on May 31, when indoor dining was once again permitted with a limit of four people per table. (Outdoor dining has been allowed since April.) Thermal baths, indoor swimming pools and spas were also given a May 31 reopening date, while limits on attendance at public spectator events were raised to 100 people indoors and 300 people outdoors. Large-scale events are now permitted, though still with some upper limits on attendance. That leaves open the possibility that the Swiss summer festival season could go ahead, though on a smaller scale than normal, in some cases. The two-week Montreux Jazz Festival kicked off on July 2, while the Locarno Film Festival will run from Aug. 4 to 14, and the Zurich Food Festival is scheduled for Sept. 16 to 26. For the latest information on what’s open in Switzerland, the MySwitzerland website has all of the details .

The Swiss tourism industry is hoping that the country’s image as a stable and hygienic destination will help it to win back visitors. “Before the pandemic, you would have said, ‘Well, this is absolutely not sexy and not a huge asset in tourism promotion — that you are clean, that you are safe, that you are well organized,’” said Mr. Aschwanden, the Switzerland Tourism spokesman. “But now we realize that this is one of the best images that you can have.” Paige McClanahan

Infections and deaths in Turkey from the coronavirus have been declining steadily. Turkey so far has fully vaccinated about 19 percent of its population of 83 million people; about 44 percent have received their first dose.

Turkey has remained open to tourists, including Americans, throughout the pandemic. Most international arrivals are required to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival.

Passengers arriving from Brazil, South Africa, India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are required to quarantine in government-assigned accommodations and will be released if they test negative for the virus after day 10.

Turkey offers health insurance packages starting at as little as $15 that cover foreign visitors for Covid-19 treatment and hospitalization for up to 30 days. The country treats coronavirus patients in both public and private hospitals and opened 17 new hospitals last year to provide more intensive-care capacity for Covid treatment.

Turkey’s economy is heavily dependent on tourism, and its response to the pandemic has been defined, in large part, by not cutting off its flow. The country has had a two-tiered system in place throughout the pandemic that exempts visitors from the strictest lockdown measures, including a curfew at night and on weekends that requires residents to stay at home.

Tourists are free to visit museums, beaches and other sites across the country. Hotels and resorts are open with capacity restrictions, and Turkey is prioritizing vaccinations for tourism workers.

On June 1, restaurants and cafes reopened for indoor and outdoor dining. All the restrictions are expected to be lifted at the start of the all-important tourist season in July. Ceylan Yeginsu

The United Kingdom

More than 68 percent of Britain’s population has received one dose of a coronavirus vaccine and the government aims to offer the rest of the adult population its first shot by the end of July. So far, 50 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated.

Entry Requirements

England has devised a “traffic light” system for foreign visitors, which determines quarantine and testing requirements depending on case numbers and the prevalence of coronavirus variants in their home countries.

Only British and Irish nationals and those with residence rights in the United Kingdom are permitted to enter England from destinations on the red list , which includes India and Brazil. Anyone who has visited or passed through a red country within 10 days of arrival is required to get a coronavirus test 72 hours before their departure and must quarantine for 10 days in a government-designated hotel, which costs about $2,400 per person traveling alone.

The United States and most European countries are currently on England’s amber list , which requires travelers to show proof of a negative virus test taken 72 hours before departure and then self-isolate at home or at a suitable hotel for 10 days after arriving in the United Kingdom.

On day two and day eight of quarantining, travelers must take PCR tests, which cost about $300 and must be purchased in advance from British authorities. Those who want to be released from self-isolation early can take an additional test through a private provider on Day 5, at a cost of about $200, but they still must take the final test on Day 8. (The cost of tests may vary when entering Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.)

Visitors from countries or territories on England’s green list — there are currently 27, including Australia and New Zealand — are exempt from quarantine but are required to take a PCR test before departure and two days after arrival. (Some of the listed destinations are on a “green watchlist,” meaning they could abruptly switch to amber.)

The National Health Service contact tracing department carries out regular spot checks by phone and in person to ensure that passengers are complying with quarantine rules. Those found breaking them could face fines of up to $14,000 and jail time.

The traffic light system will be reviewed every three weeks with the possibility for countries to move up or down depending on how well they are containing the pandemic.

Medical Facilities

Foreign citizens visiting Britain have free access to National Health Service coronavirus testing and treatment, including hospitalization if it is required.

Pubs, restaurants, theaters, museums, stores and hotels have reopened, although capacity restrictions and social distancing measures still apply. While outside, most people do not wear masks, but indoors they are still expected to do so unless eating or drinking in a restaurant.

Across major cities such as London, Manchester, Brighton and Edinburgh, restaurants and bars are buzzing with people reuniting with friends and family and enjoying their newfound freedom after months of lockdown. Demand in coastal destinations like Cornwall and Dorset has soared in recent weeks as the weather warms and Britons book domestic beach vacations.

The government planned to lift remaining coronavirus restrictions by June 21, including those on nightclubs and large events such as festivals, but a spike in cases of a highly transmissible new variant pushed the date back to July 19 . Ceylan Yeginsu

Not enough travelers are using this Global Entry alternative, the federal government says

A re you waiting for a Global Entry interview — or simply don't want to pay the $100 application fee? There's another option that can help you save nearly as much time at customs. Plus, it's completely free.

"It's not Global Entry. But it's pretty close, " said Marc Calixte, U.S. Customs and Border Protection port director of Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C.

We're talking about Mobile Passport Control, a CBP app that lets you handle most of the international arrivals process right on your smartphone. After submitting some personal information online and snapping a selfie, you can skip the long line at passport control and head to a separate — usually far shorter — lane.

This time-saving option is available to a slew of travelers, from those not yet approved for Global Entry to those who don't travel frequently enough to warrant the program's cost.

Related: Global Entry vs. TSA PreCheck: Which is more beneficial?

In some cases, travelers who might not be eligible for Global Entry at all may be able to use this shortcut.

For all of this program's benefits, though, it remains something of a well-kept secret in the eyes of the federal government.

"It's been out for a while," Calixte said during a recent conversation with TPG. "But what we lack is adoption."

Who's eligible for Mobile Passport Control?

MPC, as it's known, is available to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents and Canadian B1/B2 travelers. It's also an option for travelers from 41 " visa waiver " countries who have been to the U.S. before, from Australia to Belgium, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

You can find Mobile Passport Contol in both Google Play and the Apple App Store, where it's available for free. It's available for use at dozens of airports nationwide, plus numerous international Preclearance facilities, where travelers have to clear customs abroad — from Toronto to Dublin and Abu Dhabi.

How to use Mobile Passport Control

Upon landing, pull up the app and follow its prompts. You'll enter your flight's port of entry (aka your arrival airport).

The system will then ask you to scan your passport and enter some personal information.

Finally, you'll take a selfie.

Traveling with a family? Do the same thing for every member of the family — you can even use the same smartphone. Thanks to a new upgrade, the app now allows travelers to add up to a dozen travelers in the same household to one mobile application.

Then, once you're off the plane, follow the signs in the customs hall for the Mobile Passport Control line, like this one I saw at Dulles.

Once you reach an officer, one member of the traveling party will have their photo taken. That will pull up the information for all members of the party. You should be out in a matter of seconds.

It's worth noting that photos taken on your phone will live in the app on your phone — not on CBP servers. The photo taken at the passport control booth will also be deleted within a few days, the agency says, often within 48 hours.

CBP hopes to expand MPC usage

Though MPC may sound novel, it's actually been around for about a decade. Over 4 million travelers used the app in the 2023 fiscal year, CBP tells TPG. In 2024, the agency has already processed 4.6 million arriving passengers through the program.

Yet, CBP believes it has the capacity to handle far more passengers. Oftentimes, Calixte notes, peak periods will bring long lines to the standard passport control lanes, while just a handful of travelers visit the MPC "shortcut" lanes.

"I observe it daily," Calixte mused. "It's fascinating to watch people in the middle of the afternoon waiting ... when there's a free application that they could use that would definitely lessen the time."

CBP is working with airlines to promote MPC a bit more broadly. It also hopes to potentially open up new ways for travelers to download the app while in flight.

Is MPC better than Global Entry?

To be clear, Global Entry remains the ultimate time-saving tool at customs, providing travelers with a seamless trip through its touchless kiosks.

"Global Entry's always faster," Calixte noted.

For the five-year membership, which also includes TSA PreCheck access, you'll pay $100 (or $120 as of October ).

And though changes to Global Entry this fall will allow children of applicants or current members to apply for free, families may still be among the best-suited candidates for MPC — particularly those who don't travel abroad often, CBP branch chief and spokesperson Corey Daboin told TPG this month.

"We're trying to target these family groups that go on vacation once a year," Daboin said. "Also, I think younger — maybe college — kids ... they're doing that random trip here or there, they can just do the MPC ... when they get to the airport, download it, get it done, and submit it."

Bottom line

Mobile Passport Control is an easy, wallet-friendly way to save time at customs, particularly if you don't travel internationally enough to warrant a Global Entry application.

Amid record-breaking crowds already hitting airports this summer — and CBP expecting international traffic to stay robust throughout the summer — the program is an appealing alternative, whether you're headed overseas in the coming months ... or days.

Visa-free travel to China welcomed by people wanting to reunite with family

A smiling lady in a pink hat and top waves her hands as she stands in crowd in bright sun outside Federal Parliament.

Jenny Zhang has plans to travel to China soon to reunite with her 100-year-old mum, and she has welcomed a move to give Australians visa-free entry for short trips.

"This is the best policy. It will provide great convenience to Chinese people living in Australia," she said.

"The Chinese community is very happy about this news."

The 15-day visa-free travel for Australians was announced by Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday, after a formal meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese shake hands while standing in front of national flags.

"We agreed to provide each other with reciprocal access to five-year multiple entry visas for tourism, business and visiting family members — so as to better facilitate personal exchanges, China will also include Australia in its Visa Waiver Program," the premier said.

This change will also save Australians about $110, the current cost for a single-entry tourist visa.

The new visa-free travel scheme is due to come in within the next few months.

An infographic shows a list of 14 countries that have visa free travel arrangements with China.

China's tourism industry peaked in 2019 at a value of $580 billion and has been recovering slowly, according to Statista.

They had forecast that it could take another five years to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels.

Not everyone happy with move

While Ms Zhang was thrilled with the upcoming change, Ramila Chanisheff, the president of the Australian Uyghur Tangritagh Women's Association said it would not help members of her community.

"Our family members … we can not even talk to them — let alone visit them," she told the ABC.

"Not all of us will be given visas to visit our family members. And if we do, we will be worried about our safety."

A woman with a dark top and blue and white scarf stands near a large crowd where people are waving flags in front of parliament.

Dawa Sangmo, the Chinese liaison officer of the Tibet Information Office in Canberra raised similar worries.

"The visa-free policy is not only an issue that relates to our safety, but a matter that is more beneficial to China and its government," she told the ABC.

A woman in a woolen coat stands outside parliament with a group of flag-waving protesters behind her.

There was not much detail in the announcement, but Premier Li did mention it would be "reciprocal", making it easier for Chinese travellers to enter Australia.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the second highest amount of tourists visiting Australia came from China, only behind arrivals from New Zealand, as of April this year.

However, overall, the amount of people travelling out of China is down 40 per cent from pre-COVID levels in 2019, Reuters reported.

Cambodia launches new e-Cards for entry

Travellers heading to Cambodia will need to be aware of a new digital entry process that they will have to complete prior to their visit.

cambodia

A new entry requirement for Cambodia

If you’re making travel plans to visit Cambodia soon, you will need to take note of the country’s new e-Arrival Cards, which have to be applied for one week before your arrival.

According to Travel News and travelMole.com , from 1 July paper documents will not be accepted, and all travellers arriving in the country will have to have an e-Arrival Card.

These new e-Cards will not replace the requirement for a visa or change existing visa requirements but will replace the paper immigration form, health form, and customs declaration to help streamline the arrival process.

How to apply

Travellers can download the e-Arrival app from the Google Play or iOS App Store, or they can complete their application on the government’s online portal.

UAE’s new requirements for entry

In related news, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also recently made some changes to their tourist entry requirements.

Among these requirements, tourists will now have to provide proof of sufficient funds for expenses in cash or on a credit/debit card.

These new stricter policies were carried out to deter jobseekers from entering the country on a tourist visa with no intention of leaving ,  Visaguide.news  reports.

Tourists will need to be aware of the following before  booking their ticket  to the UAE:

  • Visitors will have to provide hotel booking documents and a return air ticket.
  • Visitors to relatives or friends will need to provide copies of their visa and passport, as well as their address, phone number, and accommodation details.
  • Visitors must show evidence of sufficient funds for expenses.

These funds are specific and tourists entering with a one-month visa must have at least Dh3 000 or R15 340 in cash or on a credit/debit card.

Tourists entering with a three-month visa will have to show an amount of Dh5 000 or R25 567 for expenses.

It was also revealed that passengers may be asked about their documentation and purpose of visiting and if adequate reasons are not given, they may be denied entry into the country.
