GOT QUESTIONS? WE HAVE ANSWERS!

Frequently asked questions .

Q. Can flights from my city be included in my package?

A . Flights for this group trip are not available.

Q. Do roommates have to make their reservations at the same time?

A . It is not necessary for roommates to save their spot at the same time. However, if there is only one person on the reservation who has paid her/his deposit, the single occupancy rate will apply. If and when a roommate books her part of the reservation, the reservation will revert to the double occupancy rate. Please note: Naming your roommate in the comments of a reservation request does not make a reservation eligible for double occupancy. Double occupancy rates apply only when two people on a reservation have paid deposits.

Q. Can I set up a payment plan?

A . The Confirmation-Receipt you will receive when your reservation is confirmed will provide a link to request your payment plan.

Q. Who is Ebony Vacations?

A . Ebony Vacations is the travel agency extension of GoGIRLS! Black Travel Club.

Q. Does GoGIRLS! offer roommate matching?

A. Because each guest is better at selecting a roommate than we are, we do not offer roommate matching. We do post for roommates on the Facebook page so members may contact each other.

Q. If something comes up and I cannot go on the trip, can I get my deposit back?

A. Deposits are nonrefundable.

This evening, we meet for a brief welcome meeting and then enjoy a wonderful dinner together to get better acquainted.

After dinner, we will enjoy a Christmas Lights Walking Tour.   We’ll see the magnificent Radio City Music Hall, a part of Rockefeller Center, and, of course, the legendary Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. The Rock Center Christmas Tree is a live tree that must be a minimum of 65 feet tall, and it is always donated by landowners, usually from within a 250-mile range of NYC. The tree is covered with over 40, 000 LED lights and topped with a 9.5-foot Swarovski crystal star!

NYC’s Holiday Fairs and Holiday Markets are a Shopper’s Paradise! From November through the end of December, you’ll find the best that New York City has to offer: unique gift items including jewelry, clothing, home goods, arts, crafts, antiques, electronics, and so much more. Day 3 - Full Day Tour

Experience the magic of New York City during the festive Christmas season with an unforgettable full-day tour that includes visits to iconic landmarks and attractions, all while soaking in the holiday spirit.

The day begins with a journey to Battery Park, where we’ll board a ferry to Liberty Island for an up-close encounter with the Statue of Liberty. As we approach Lady Liberty, adorned with seasonal decorations, marvel at this symbol of freedom and hear captivating stories of its history. Enjoy stunning views of the Manhattan skyline from Liberty Island before continuing to Ellis Island, where the rich immigrant heritage comes to life.

Next, we’ll head to the One World Observatory, located at the top of the One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Take in breathtaking panoramic views of the city draped in festive lights and decorations, providing a unique perspective on the holiday magic of New York City.

Afterward, we’ll visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, a place of reflection and remembrance honoring the lives lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Explore the museum’s exhibits, artifacts, and moving tributes that highlight the resilience of New Yorkers and the spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath.

Throughout the day, soak in the festive atmosphere of Manhattan, adorned with dazzling holiday decorations, twinkling lights, and festive displays. Feel the energy of the city as you stroll through bustling streets adorned with Christmas trees and window displays, adding an extra layer of magic to this memorable tour.

A Guide to New York’s 7 Most Exclusive Members-Only Social Clubs

Entering the upper echelon of New York high society is no easy feat, especially considering the constant turnover of ever-changing “hot spots” that trend in the city. However, joining a members-only social club is a foolproof way to relish the most exclusive experiences the Big Apple offers. Here we break down seven of New York City’s top members-only social clubs and tell you what it will take to become a member. Be forewarned; if accepted, you may find yourself rubbing shoulders with socialites, celebrities, and other high-profile figures once you enter the private world of NYC ‘s elite…

Aman New York

travel clubs nyc

Owned by Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin, Aman Resorts is a favorite among A-listers such as Bill Gates, Tom Hanks, and the Kardashians. For a whopping $200,000 initiation fee, members will possess privileged entry to worldwide sporting events, fashion shows, posh visits to artists’ studios, and premium spa services.

Located on 57th Street in the Crown Building, Aman has 83 rooms, a “Garden Terrace,” a three-story spa, and a swanky jazz club. Aman’s membership framework further states that “experts in nutrition, health, and fitness will create entirely bespoke, constantly evolving programs for Founders, offering ongoing support and guidance as their wellness journey progresses both on and off property.” All in all, view Aman as the ultimate sanctuary, offering a peaceful escape from the “city that never sleeps.”

With beyond 30 properties in 20 countries, becoming a Founder grants you access to all of Aman’s members-only amenities across the globe. The good news is that anyone (who has the 200k to spare) can apply to join; the process begins with a 30-minute virtual onboarding session to determine if you are a right fit for the most elite of social clubs.

Soho House New York

travel clubs nyc

Known for its luxurious and stylish ambiance, Soho House New York is a private members’ club and hotel in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan. Soho House indulges NYC’s young, creative professionals with boundless privileges through its intimate cocktail lounges, spas, rooftop pools, screening rooms, hotels, and restaurants.

Originally founded in London in 1995, restaurateur Nick Jones created Soho House as a space for entertainment, media, and fashion artists to network and socialize. Over the years, the concept has expanded to several major cities across the world, including New York. Today, Soho is the first name that most people think of when they think “luxury members-only social club.”

By offering a combination of social spaces, bars, and access to private events, it’s no mystery why Soho House is a longstanding staple of the Big Apple’s trendy elite. Want to join? Unfortunately, there is a long waitlist, and they are notoriously selective, so you will want to have at least one member of the club you are applying to sponsor you. Membership cost is modest compared to Aman: $2,677 for access to NY only and $4,899 annually for all clubs nationwide. It’s worth noting the fees are cut in half if you are under 27 (an added incentive to help ensure Soho’s young, hip reputation endures).

Casa Cipriani

travel clubs nyc

Casa Cipriani is an exclusive destination where members can socialize and unwind amidst idyllic waterfront settings. The club includes a variety of opulent spaces, not to mention the quintessential Cipriani restaurant, Jazz Café, bars and lounges, outdoor terraces, and a ritzy rooftop venue- all provided with remarkable views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty.

Popular among celebrities and socialites, a must-see addition of Casa Cipriani is the Cuban-inspired lounge Socialista. Located above the Michelin-starred restaurant at Cipriani’s Broadway residence, Socialista combines colonial European influences with Havana-themed furnishings, serving a variety of Cuban bites and beverages.

Socialista is a member and invite-only experience, and the lively venue’s exclusivity only adds to its allure. With locations in Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, London, Miami, and New York, Socialista is the perfect lounge for a private, upscale evening sipping Cuban cocktails and cuisine. Structured similarly to Soho, annual fees range from $2,500 to $5,000 depending on age and how many clubs you want access to. As with Soho, it helps to have members in your corner if you are trying to get in.

travel clubs nyc

Zero Bond (also known around town as “Oh, Bond”) is a private club in the Noho neighborhood that made its New York debut in 2020. Met with immediate success, major stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Taylor Swift, and Gigi Hadid often frequent the uber-exclusive club. With amenities like $10 million in art, a sushi bar, and a library spanning 20,000 feet and two floors, Zero Bond has plenty of space for affluent celebs to lounge, mingle, and party.

Creator of Zero Bond, Scott Sartiano, told Bloomberg , “I want to create a space for successful people to work, hang out, whatever they want, and feel safe and happy… I’m putting up a gate, I’m building a wall, and there’s criteria to get inside.”

The cost to clear that gate is a $5,000 initiation fee, yearly dues, a letter of recommendation from a current member, and a recent headshot if you want to apply to be a part of the prosperous Zero Bond community. Eventually, a committee will view the application and evaluate if you “display a high level of integrity and demonstrate an ability to contribute to our Zero Bond community” before they issue a decision based upon “all aspects of the person’s character.” Interpret that how you will.

Backed by the investors and design team for the distinguished Soho House, The Ned NoMad is the latest private club to hit New York’s social scene. Located in The Johnston Building, the hotel property includes ‘Ned’s Club’- a private club with admission to a luxe rooftop drinkery, 167 bedrooms, and a Cecconi’s restaurant.

The creative director behind The Ned, Richie Akiva, is responsible for the incredibly successful 1 Oak nightclub empire (the flagship Chelsea location is a longstanding celebrity-favorite spot in the city). Membership also grants exclusive access to The Dining Room, The Magic Room, and Little Ned. The city’s newest private club has become a hotspot for A-listers to rub shoulders, often visited by prominent figures such as NBA champ Kevin Durant and Oscar-nominated actress Kristen Stewart.

Ned’s Club also offers members breathtaking rooftop views of the Empire State Building as they dine on a Mediterranean-inspired menu and specialty cocktails. Membership at The Ned costs $5,000 a year, although existing members of Soho House can apply at a reduced rate of $2,500 a year. Again, it helps to have a member in your corner when applying.

The Metropolitan Club

travel clubs nyc

Founded by legendary financier J.P. Morgan, The Metropolitan Club , commonly dubbed “The Met Club,” is a prestigious NYC members-only social club dating back to the late 19th century. Located near Central Park, construction for the club was completed in 1894, with the building now considered an architectural landmark. Demonstrating the longstanding history of The Met Club, the building’s exterior is embellished with elaborate detailing and classical sculptures reminiscent of the Gilded Age.

Heavily vetted members, selected by invitation only, are traditionally involved in the influential world of academia, finance, art, and business. Enrollment grants exclusive entry to the club’s high-end facilities, including formal dining rooms, elegant lounges, and event spaces. The annual membership cost is $5,000.

Today, the Club remains perfect for Manhattan’s high society to host private gatherings, meetings, and posh events. A one-time hangout of presidents like Richard Nixon and Ronald Regan, the Metropolitan Club is known for preserving its polished and elevated atmosphere, meaning a strict dress code is enforced — a welcome change from the hoodies and joggers worn by many of the other club’s members on this list.

The Union Club of the City of New York

travel clubs nyc

Established in 1836, The Union Club is New York City’s oldest members-only social club and one of the earliest developed in the country. Recognized for its exclusivity, historical importance, and refined ambiance, The Union Club has one of the most rigorous application processes in the city. Famous for its architectural appeal and historic significance, The Union Club’s widely-known building is a designated New York City Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Developed by influential politicians and professional leaders, only individuals with ties to fields in business, law, finance, and the arts are traditionally accepted. For members, The Union Club offers various luxe facilities, including celebrated libraries, chic lounges, fine dining, and other private event spaces for leisure and intellectual engagement.

Expect to have a nomination from a current member for acceptance into this highbrowed, exclusive NYC community. Membership is also $5,000 annually, and like the Metropolitan Club, there is a strict guest code. As with most of these clubs, you will need to keep the phone in your pocket if you want to keep your membership.

The Most Exclusive Private Members’ Clubs In New York

Where social life never sleeps.

by Emma Treagus Published on March 11, 2024

At Luxe Digital, we independently research, review, and recommend products we love and that we think you will love, too. Learn more about how we curate the best products for you .

In the vibrant mosaic of New York City’s social landscape, the most exclusive private members’ clubs stand as bastions of luxury, tradition, and discretion.

Tracing their origins back to 18th-century Britain, these clubs were initially established as exclusive enclaves for the social elite, offering a private setting for the affluent to socialize away from the public gaze. Over centuries, this tradition crossed oceans and evolved, embedding itself into the fabric of New York society.

These prestigious clubs provide refuge to the crème de la crème across various industries, including tech tycoons and Hollywood celebrities. This is where you spend your days dining on rooftops, indulging in spa treatments, networking with industry moguls and sharing your talent with fellow creatives.

Where do we sign up?

From soaring initiation fees and rigorous selection processes to secret club rules and time-honored traditions, membership often remains an invitation-only affair.

That being said, we may not make the list, but we do have the inside scoop. Here is a peek into where The Big Apple’s one-percenters choose to hang out.

15 of the best things to do in New York City in 2024

Mar 23, 2024 • 9 min read

travel clubs nyc

A trip to Central Park is a classic stop on any NYC itinerary © Marco Rubino / Shutterstock

Three life-changing words: New York City .

Millions are drawn to it; some never shake it. Monumental, artistic, cultural, commercial, cosmopolitan – the City That Never Sleeps is everything you've imagined. You'll never be bored here – the only problem is narrowing down what to do from the endless list of possibilities.

To help you get started, here's a list of my favorite inspirational highlights – all perfect experiences for your next trip. However, the big sights lure big crowds, so brace yourself. If you're after a calmer NYC experience, sights in the "outer borough" (beyond Manhattan) will generally be less crowded.

Ticket costs can also be substantial, so consider purchasing a New York CityPASS , which offers good discounts on top attractions.

Where Locals Go: NYC locals share their favorite nearby vacation spots

A red kayak in the water in front of the Statue of Liberty

1. Visit the iconic Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

The iconic copper-green  Statue of Liberty dominates a small island in New York Harbor, casting a protective shadow over neighboring Ellis Island , the site of a stirring Immigration Museum . Still symbolic today, these two landmarks served as an uplifting gateway through which over 12 million soon-to-be-Americans passed from 1892 to 1924.

Planning tip: Boats to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island leave from The Battery in Manhattan and Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The monuments are often visited on a combined ticket – book well ahead, especially if you hope to spend time in Liberty's pedestal or crown.

2. Soak up the views from the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings

The tallest building in the world when it opened in 1931, the 1454ft  Empire State Building remains a much-loved character on the NYC skyline, although somewhat controversially, street-level views of this New York City skyline icon are about to be obscured by a luxury condo apartment. Vistas from the outdoor, 360-degree view, 86th-floor deck and the indoor 102nd-floor observatory are breathtaking, though – particularly at sunset. Look northeast at the art deco Chrysler Building , also once the world's tallest before being dethroned by the Empire State.

Planning tip:  Buy tickets in advance and devote a few moments to the second-floor Story of an Icon museum.

Interior of the 9/11 National Memorial Museum, New york City

3. Pay tribute to lost lives at the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum

The National 9/11 Memorial is located where the World Trade Center Twin Towers once stood. It features sobering tributes to the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, most poignantly two sunken pools with cascades of water pouring into the fallen towers' footprints. Adjacent to the memorial is a profoundly moving museum with remnants and reminders of the tragic day.

Planning tip:  The memorial is free; museum tickets are best bought online in advance.

4. Have family-friendly seaside fun at Coney Island

Jutting like a Brooklyn thumb out into New York Harbor's Lower Bay, Coney Island boasts a wide beach, a popular seaside boardwalk and a lively amusement park, all reachable by subway in about an hour from Midtown Manhattan. Popular attractions include the family-friendly New York Aquarium , Nathan's Famous hot dogs , Deno's Wonder Wheel and thrill-filled Luna Park , featuring the wooden Cyclone rollercoaster – a city and national historic landmark.

Planning tip:  Walk to nearby Brighton Beach for classic Russian and Ukrainian eats.

A shot of the backs of a crowd of people inspecting a painting

5. Tour the vast collections at NYC's major museums

The Met  is NYC's most visited museum for very good reasons. With 5000 years of art from all over the world, two million individual objects and 17 acres of exhibition space, it's massive, astounding and seemingly inexhaustible.

An inside tip – the Met's often bypassed uptown Cloisters were cobbled together from authentic sections of European medieval monasteries. Tickets cover three-day admission to both Met branches.

Directly across Central Park from the Met is another significant museum with a broad scope: the American Museum of Natural History , where your ticket grants you access to more than 50 exhibits and 34 million artifacts!

Art lovers will find modern masterpieces from Warhol, Pollock and more in the Museum of Modern Art ; book ahead to skip the line, particularly at weekends. Somewhat smaller and less crowded, though definitely still comprehensive, is the Brooklyn Museum .

Detour: For something much more contemporary and free of hordes, try Brooklyn's Bushwick Collective Street Art .

Use this guide to plan the ultimate museum tour of New York City

6. Hang out in Central Park

Hemmed in by buildings, Central Park serves up 843 acres of green space – meadows, groves, gardens and lakes, as well as restaurants, theaters, concert venues, fountains, skating rinks, ballfields, playgrounds and much more. Park Drive, although often crowded, is a favorite route for runners, skaters and cyclists.

Seeking some green space with fewer people? Brooklyn's Prospect Park , created by the same landscapers as Central Park, has all the same charm with far less throng.

Detour: For a leafy overview of Manhattan, consider cycling along sections of the 31-mile Manhattan Waterfront Greenway , especially the Hudson River Greenway segment.

Can't get enough of Central Park? Our local tells you where to find Central Park's best corners

7. Walk across Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park

Undoubtedly NYC's most beautiful river crossing, the 1596ft-long, stone-towered Brooklyn Bridge was one of the world's first steel suspension bridges when it opened in 1883. Today, a walk along its pedestrian passageway delivers delightful Manhattan and Brooklyn skyline views.

Brooklyn Bridge Park , the 1.3-mile, 85-acre green space on Brooklyn's East River shoreline, prolongs the pleasure (and the Manhattan views). Check out the waterfront, glass-enclosed Jane's Carousel and multiple revitalized pier-based leisure and activity areas.

Save these restaurants to your Brooklyn itinerary

Couple with bicycles looking at New York skyline

8. Gaze upon the Manhattan skyline

Manhattan's tumble of buildings is a mesmerizing spectacle, changing in natural and artificial light, particularly at dusk and night. Harbor cruises are a fantastic way to enjoy it, but there are also numerous land-based vantage points along the East River.

In Brooklyn, head for Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn Heights Promenade, East River State Park in Williamsburg and Transmitter Park in Greenpoint. Over in Queens, go to Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City and Astoria Park.

Planning tip:  For a once-in-a-lifetime splurge and unbeatable views, take a helicopter tour over NYC; yes, it's pricey, but it's worth it.

9. See art and architecture on the High Line and at Hudson Yards

The 1.5-mile-long High Line is one of New York's great surprises. This art-filled, community green space – featuring gardens, events, and amazing city outlooks – was crafted from an abandoned elevated railway. It can be packed on warm evenings when the unique modern architecture on all sides is illuminated.

The northern terminus of the High Line is at the Hudson Yards , Manhattan's newest luxury development, with gourmet restaurants, upscale shops and singular attractions like Vessel , a multilevel public landmark, and The Edge , the city's highest (101st-floor) open-air observatory.

10. Visit the landmark Rockefeller Center

Perhaps best known for its winter backdrop – a world-famous ice-skating rink and New York's giant ceremoniously-lit Christmas tree – the art deco Rockefeller Center is a busy, art-filled national historic landmark all year round.

Named for its entrepreneurial developer – John D Rockefeller Jr, America's first billionaire – it claims highlights such as the 70th-floor Top of the Rock observation deck, the Radio City Music Hall and NBC Studios Tours , as well as plenty of Midtown shopping and dining.

Crowds of people crossing a busy city street lined with theater signs and other entertainment in New York City

11. Be dazzled by the lights of Times Square and the Theater District

The neon lights really do shine bright on Broadway, especially in Times Square at the heart of the world's most celebrated theater district. Day and night, it provides billboarded sensory overload. In the area are dozens of marquee-fronted playhouses hosting box-office hits, alongside Madame Tussauds and National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey . Bryant Park, Midtown's small but activity-filled green oasis, and the lion-flanked entrance of the New York Public Library , a national historic landmark, are also nearby.

12. Ride the New York City Subway and Staten Island Ferry

The wheels never stop turning in NYC, aided by its sleepless subway , one of the world's biggest mass transit systems. Another iconic part of the New York transport network is the free, orange Staten Island Ferry , the cheapest way to grab pics of Lady Liberty.

For NYC urban transport history, the kid-friendly Transit Museum has climb-aboard subway cars from all eras. There's a museum annex and shop in Grand Central Terminal , a Midtown beaux-arts wonder with an unforgettably grand main concourse.

A close up of pink lily pads in the New York Botanical Garden

13. Support conservation at the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Gardens

Who'd have thought the US's biggest and oldest zoo is in NYC? The conservation-minded Bronx Zoo hosts 6000-plus animals in 265 acres of specially designed habitats. Adjacent to it is the New York Botanical Garden , a 250-acre, year-round nature showcase with dozens of indoor and outdoor gardens included in your ticket.

Planning tip: Smaller but impressive alternative zoos can be found at Central Park, Prospect Park and Flushing Meadows Corona Park (Queens). The 50-acre Brooklyn Botanic Garden is famous for its seasonally blossoming cherry trees.

14. Find art and entrepreneurs in Brooklyn

In a city that places a high premium on space, Brooklyn now claims three hip, rehabilitated industrial areas commandeered by entrepreneurs, artisanal makers, retailers, artists, start-ups and nonprofits. Industry City occupies six large warehouses on the Sunset Park waterfront.

Further south, 100-plus companies fill the vast and storied Brooklyn Army Terminal . And east of Downtown Brooklyn, the expansive, historic Brooklyn Navy Yard is a modern made-in-Brooklyn manufacturing hub.

15. Go to a game at a New York stadium

New Yorkers take outsize pride in their sports teams, so how better to absorb the city's energy than at a game? The Bronx's Yankee Stadium and Mets' Citi Field in Queens are grand open-air stadiums, while Manhattan's Madison Square Garden , home of Knicks and Liberty basketball and Rangers hockey, and Brooklyn's futuristic Barclays Center , where the Nets basketball and Islanders hockey teams play, are enclosed, so good for rainy days.

Planning tip:  If you'd prefer to see the Giants and Jets compete in the National Football League, their arenas are in nearby New Jersey .

And now for the hard part: should you go to a Mets or Yankees game? Two local experts weigh in

The Best Rooftop Bars in NYC

travel clubs nyc

Whether you want to gaze at Manhattan’s skyscrapers while enjoying a rooftop brunch or watch their shimmering lights under the stars , New York City has the best rooftop bars for any time of the day. These spots have more to offer than great views and clever libations — although that would be enough to make most of us happy. Music, games, comfy furniture, tantalizing treats to go with your drinks, a fireplace for chilly nights and a pool for warmer ones, create inviting options for a rooftop happy hour , date night, or partying with pals. Can’t get away for a weekend escape? Your respite is just an elevator ride away to a resort-like scene around the pool at Jimmy or Mr. Purple. If a lush garden with flowers and greenery is your perfect setting, visit Gallow Green for an after-work cocktail or Sunday brunch. Use a bit of imagination and head to the tropics as you sit under a palm tree at 230 Fifth or sample Mexican snacks at Pod 39. If fun, games, music, and a bit of whimsy are your idea of a holiday, drop in to Magic Hour. From casual rooftop bars to rooftop restaurants, and from downtown to midtown rooftop bars, NYC has it all . While there’s something about summer that gets us thinking about the fresh air, starry nights, and warm breezes of NYC rooftop bars, most of these spots let you enjoy the views in comfort all year long. Tropical cocktails might give way to warming toddies, but the escape from the day works just as well when it’s cold outside. And if anything can enhance the looks of Manhattan’s glass-clad giants, it’s the warm colors of sunset and a cocktail in your hand.

Governors Island is a world unto itself.

In New York City , summer is the season for festivals and festivities, rooftops and sidewalks, long lunches and longer weekends. The city’s pace may slow down, but the influx of tourists picks up. The New York City Tourism Bureau estimates that the five boroughs will welcome 64.5 million visitors in 2024. So, it’s safe to assume that many of the city’s most famous attractions will be packed.

If you want to see quintessential New York City sights but don’t feel like dealing with the crowds, here’s a local’s list of excellent alternatives to keep in your back pocket.

Instead of Ellis Island , Try Governors Island

A ferry ride to Ellis Island to visit Lady Liberty seems like an obvious must-see. And that is precisely why you’re guaranteed to find lines stretching around Battery Park and back whatever weekend you’re in town.

Instead, why not take the ferry in a different direction and spend the day at Governors Island? You’ll still enjoy Statue of Liberty views as you explore the 172-acre island, but on this stretch, you can rent a beach cruiser from Blazing Saddles and explore the impressive public artworks and myriad food trucks, which includes weekend appearances by Brooklyn’s Threes Brewing and the resident sheep living in Hammock Grove.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s answer to Central Park.

Instead of Central Park , Try Prospect Park

If you can’t find a spot for a picnic blanket on Central Park’s Great Lawn, pack up your wicker basket and head to Brooklyn’s backyard, Prospect Park. Landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed both parks. But there is a difference: the Brooklyn green space offers more freedom. Long Meadow runs nearly a mile along Prospect Park’s west side, guaranteeing enough space for a picnic blanket and much more.

Should you be staying in Manhattan, it’s understandable that you’ll want to make a day of it at Prospect Park. The rolling 526 acres offer enough activities to fill a weekend. If you visit on Saturday, swing by the 30-plus vendors at the farmers market at the Grand Army Plaza entrance to stock up on picnic supplies. Stop by the park any day but Monday and you’ll also have a chance to catch some late-spring bloom brilliance at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Avoid the mayhem at MoMA here.

Instead of MoMA , Try the Cooper Hewitt

The MoMA boasts one of the world’s best collections of modern art. But on weekends, the cost of admission comes with hour-long lines and crowds elbowing one another for a glimpse of a Van Gogh. The Upper East Side’s Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum tends to fly under most tourists’ radar.

The landmark building, an ivy-covered, 64-room Carnegie mansion, is itself a work of art and a piece of Manhattan history. The museum’s historic and contemporary design specialty befits its elegant exterior. Design buffs will pore over the museum’s collection of more than 215,000 design objects and a gift shop that rivals MoMA’s. And if you’re not in the mood to spend a sunny day inside a museum, the Cooper Hewitt boasts a gorgeous outdoor garden across the street from Central Park.

Instead of J.G. Melon , Try EJ’s Luncheonette

J.G. Melon, the longtime Upper East Side pub standard, is notorious for its cash-only policy and a queue stretching down the street of diners in pursuit of one of the city’s best burgers. But there is no need to worry if you’re in the area with a growling stomach or forgot to stop at the ATM because there’s another Manhattan institution just a minute away.

For nearly four decades, EJ’s Luncheonette has proudly continued the quintessential New York City tradition of serving a straightforward menu from the counter. But don’t be fooled by its traditional setup. While Formica tables and turquoise booths create a nostalgic atmosphere, the menu surprises with its modern twists. In addition to traditional burgers and open-faced pastrami sandwiches, you’ll find delicious vegetarian-friendly alternatives. And credit cards are welcomed.

Instead of Bemelmans , Try Monkey Bar

Unless you are a guest of Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Carlyle Hotel , nabbing a seat at its Bemelmans Bar — famed for its red-suited staffers, art deco ambiance and Madeline author Ludwig Bemelmans’ whimsical murals — is nearly impossible.

Fortunately, Manhattan has no shortage of martinis. If you seek a spot with the same Mad Men -era style, look no further than Midtown’s Monkey Bar. Serving Vesper martinis to well-heeled guests in red leather banquettes since 1936, Monkey Bar features an eye-catching mural depicting some of the bar’s bygone regulars, like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker and Fred Astaire. And unlike Bemelmans, Monkey Bar accepts reservations.

Clarence Thomas, in Financial Disclosure, Acknowledges 2019 Trips Paid by Harlan Crow

The justice amended an earlier filing to include vacations to Bali and an exclusive California club paid for by the Texas billionaire Harlan Crow.

  • Share full article

Justice Clarence Thomas sitting in an armchair and speaking. He is wearing a dark suit and a blue shirt with no tie.

By Abbie VanSickle

Justice Clarence Thomas acknowledged on Friday additional luxury travel he had accepted from a conservative billionaire, amending a previous financial disclosure to reflect trips he had taken to an Indonesian island and a secretive all-male club in the Northern California redwoods.

The trips, taken in 2019, were earlier revealed by ProPublica , but it is the first time that Justice Thomas has included them on his financial disclosures .

Other Supreme Court justices chronicled their gifts, travel and money earned from books and teaching. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson reported receiving four concert tickets valued at about $3,700 from Beyoncé and $10,000 of artwork for her chambers from the Alabama artist and musician Lonnie Holley .

The financial disclosures, released yearly, are one of the few public records available about the justices’ lives, providing select details of their activities outside the court. A steady drumbeat of revelations about ties between some of the justices and wealthy donors has only intensified interest in the reports, particularly after disclosures that Justice Thomas had accepted lavish gifts and travel from affluent friends over decades.

Books are one of the few ways that the justices can earn outside, uncapped money . Justice Jackson reported $893,750 from an advance for her coming book, a memoir. Justice Neil M. Gorsuch listed a book advance of $250,000.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh disclosed a $340,000 advance. He is working on a legal memoir, still untitled, and is expected to offer a firsthand account of his contentious confirmation hearing in 2018 and an attempt on his life in 2022. The deal was earlier reported by Axios .

Justice Sonia Sotomayor continued to earn royalties for her books, including about $87,000 in proceeds this year. She cited about $1,900 for voicing a character on an animated children’s show on PBS, “Alma’s Way,” about a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx and her family. The narrative arc is not unfamiliar to the justice, whose Puerto Rican parents raised her in public housing in the Bronx.

The 2019 trips disclosed by Justice Thomas refer to two excursions with Harlan Crow, a Texas real estate magnate and donor to conservative causes. During one, he and his wife, Virginia Thomas, flew aboard Mr. Crow’s private jet to Indonesia, where they spent more than a week island-hopping on Mr. Crow’s superyacht.

Justice Thomas did not provide a dollar value on his disclosure form, but ProPublica had estimated that if Justice Thomas had paid for the plane trip and yacht himself, the trip could have exceeded $500,000.

The second trip, listed as a visit to Monte Rio, Calif., appears to be an excursion to Bohemian Grove, an exclusive retreat held on a 2,700-acre property in Sonoma County, north of San Francisco. Mr. Crow is a member of the club.

Justice Thomas did not report any gifts or private jet flights or travel from benefactors for 2023, the year covered by the most recent disclosures. He listed only one gift, a pair of photo albums worth $2,000 from Terrence and Barbara Giroux. Mr. Giroux is the departing executive director of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, an exclusive group that includes figures at some of the highest echelons of society.

As a member of the group, Justice Thomas has granted it unusual access to the Supreme Court, presiding over an annual ceremony in the courtroom and meeting with and mentoring the recipients of college scholarships awarded by the group and worth millions of dollars a year; many come from backgrounds that mirror his own.

Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. was granted an extension this year, said the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, which offers support for the federal judiciary and handles the financial records . That is in keeping with his typical practice. According to Fix the Court, an advocacy group critical of the court’s lack of transparency, for more than a decade he has delayed filing his disclosure.

Last year, both Justice Thomas and Justice Alito requested and received extensions on filing their disclosure forms. Neither cited a reason in asking for a delay.

Read Justice Clarence Thomas’s Financial Disclosures for 2023

The Supreme Court justice also included an amendment for his 2019 filing.

When his form was released to the public , Justice Thomas had included an unusual addendum, a statement defending his acceptance of gifts from Mr. Crow . In reporting a real estate deal, a sale of his mother’s single-family home to Mr. Crow, he said in the statement that he had “inadvertently omitted” such information, which also sought to justify his decision to fly on private jets. He stated that he had been advised to avoid commercial travel after the leak of the draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade. However, he did not list any private plane travel in 2023.

The Supreme Court, under mounting pressure and intense public scrutiny, adopted its first ethics code in November. Judges in lower federal courts have long been bound by a code, but the Supreme Court has never been subject to those requirements because of its special constitutional status.

Still the lack of enforcement mechanism or a process to handle ethics complaints drew criticism , as did the absence of any specific restrictions on gifts, travel or real estate deals.

However, the nine-page code cautioned that members of the Supreme Court should not participate in activities that “detract from the dignity” of the job, interfere with a justice’s ability to carry out official duties, “reflect adversely on the justice’s impartiality” or “lead to frequent disqualification.”
