English is widely used and understood in Dubai, especially in business, tourism, and as a lingua franca among the diverse expatriate community. Many signs, menus, and official documents are also available in English, making it relatively easy for English-speaking visitors to navigate and communicate in the city.

Dress code. While Dubai is relatively liberal compared to some Middle Eastern countries, it is still important to dress modestly, especially in public places and when visiting religious sites. Both men and women should avoid wearing revealing or skimpy clothing, and women should cover their shoulders and knees in public.

Public displays of affection. Public displays of affection, such as hugging and kissing, should be avoided, as they are considered disrespectful in the local culture.

Greetings. When meeting locals, a traditional Arabic greeting is “As-salamu alaykum,” which means “Peace be upon you.” Respond with “Wa alaykumu as-salam,” meaning “And peace be upon you, too.”

Ramadan. During the holy month of Ramadan, it is respectful to refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. Many restaurants and cafes remain closed during the day, and some may have limited operating hours.

Right-hand greetings. In Arab culture, the right hand is considered clean, while the left hand is used for personal hygiene. When shaking hands or offering items, always use your right hand.

Photography. Always ask for permission before taking photos of locals, especially women. Photography may be restricted in certain religious or government buildings.

Tipping. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated in Dubai. Many restaurants and hotels include a service charge, but leaving a small tip for excellent service is common.

 Dubai has a desert climate characterized by hot and humid conditions for much of the year. The weather is influenced by Dubai’s location in the Arabian Desert and the surrounding Arabian Gulf. Here’s an overview of the weather in Dubai throughout the year:

Summer (May–September). The summer months are scorching and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 100°F to 113°F. The humidity can make it feel even hotter, and it is not uncommon for the heat index to reach 122°F.

Fall (October–November). The fall months are slightly cooler, with average temperatures ranging from 82°F to 95°F. The humidity is also lower, making it a more comfortable time to visit Dubai.

Winter (December–February) . Expect pleasant temperatures, with daytime highs ranging from 68°F to 79°F. The evenings are cooler, providing a comfortable climate for outdoor activities.  

Spring (March–April) . An excellent time to visit, with warm but not scorching temperatures. Daytime temperatures range from 77°F to 90°F, with humidity higher than in winter.

Dubai is located southeast of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula and is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. It houses the largest population in the UAE and is considered the most moderate and progressive of all the emirates to be experienced on a Dubai vacation.

Early archaeological findings in Dubai date back to around 8000 BC, however, the Sheikhdom of Dubai was not formally established until 1833. By the beginning of the 20th century, the area was an important trading hub and with the discovery of oil in 1966, infrastructure began to expand. Just a few years later, in 1971, Dubai became the second emirate to join the UAE.

Thanks to the revenues from the oil industry, a construction boom began in the 1980s, continued in the 1990s and the pace with which it accelerated during the new millennium was unrivaled anywhere else. As a result of this expansion, Dubai has grown into a cosmopolitan region famous around the world for its immense construction projects including Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, skyscrapers, man-made islands and luxurious hotels, all to be wondered at on a Dubai vacation.

Dubai Travel Package Sample Itinerary

Day 1  – Arrive in vibrant Dubai. Look for a driver with a sign with your name on it. You will be taken to your hotel where you can relax and recover from the flight. The balance of your day would be free to enjoy Dubai.

Day 2  – Dubai Highlights with Burj Khalifa. – today you will be picked up at your hotel for a classic “highlights” tour of the city of Dubai. This tour checks off all the basic “must see” highlights including Dubai Creek, Bastakiya, Dubai Mueseum, Burj Khalifa and musical fountains (with entrance to the 124 th floor) & Jumeriah Mosque.  Evening at leisure to enjoy Dubai.

Day 3  – You will be picked up in the early afternoon after enjoying a nice breakfast at the hotel to depart for your Desert Safari tour.  The tour is an exciting adventure and “must do” while in Dubai. It is an exhilarating drive in a 4×4 vehicle in the desert dunes, and includes  a camel ride, live cultural performances including belly dancing, a photoshoot in Arabic costume, and a BBQ buffet dinner. Dubai is incredible & such an amazing city! Very well planned and organized tour. We had a fantastic guide who explained everything in english well; he was prompt, professional, and polite. The pacing and timing of the tours are well orchestrated, we had enough personal time to rest or venture on our own. The initially advertised hotels in the brochure were not the hotels we ended up staying in (they changed last minute). Although all of the assigned hotels were still 4stars (above average) equipped with gym/pool. Breakfast included entire week: Al Khoory Sky Garden's breakfast is the best & Time Asma Al Barsha's was blah. The only mosque worth the time is the spectacular white marble mega-mosque in Abu Dhabi which is included in the tour (mandatory to cover up from head to toe). The other mosques were fillers: the tour stops for a few minutes for photo shoot (exterior of the building only). The 3 minute camel ride (poor camel!) went around a circle enough time for you to take a picture. We enjoyed the dinner @ the desert; it was good and the show that accompanied it was quite entertaining. Our bus was relatively modern & clean (the windows could use a squeegee), and our driver's skill is impressive! Overall, great vacation!

The guides and drivers were all excellent, 5-star rating. The only improvement would be to: - educate about basic pricing for most purchased items (Gold was explained, but e.g. a Thawb outfit price should be closer to 100 Dirham and not over 200 Dirham - give some hints what good prices for customers are). - hence the routing would make more sense in the other direction (for shopping less expensive first instead of most expensive). But I will not deduct any stars over that.

A lot of time was wasted waiting for tickets to the aquarium and zoo. We could have explored the mall for the hour instead of waiting on tickets. We also had to do unnecessary walking at the mall for the guide to show us where to meet after events. We could have used the time to explore the mall. We also had to wait at least an hour at the marina in the heat while dressed for our cruise. No one told us why!! These days were not as organized as others!!

Indus Travel amazed me. I have traveled before with other tour companies and I have to say that the organization of Indus Travel was really neat. I received ahead of the trip the schedule of what to expect with times a locations. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and nice. The hotel was picked with care and we got a great hotel that went beyond our expectations. The airline selected was one of the best ones and the price of the trips were convenient.

All of the tour guides were excellent and very knowledgeable. My only issues were that we paid for a 5 star hotel and we got a 4 star hotel. I let a representative know about this hotel discrepancy and nothing was done or corrected. It was never addressed. Also, we were not informed that we would not be seeing certain listed sites until I asked why we didn't see them. I was then told they were closed due to Covid. Those sites are still listed in the online brochure and thus included in the price.

Allerdings: Beworben wurde die Reise mit einer maximalen Gruppengröße von 20 (!), was ein wesentliches Motiv für die Buchung war. Tatsächlich war die Gruppengröße 39 - 41, also doppelt so groß!!!! Wie vertrauenswürdig sind eigentlich die Angaben zur Reise? Wäre die Gruppengröße mit max 40 Personen angegeben gewesen hätten wir diese Reise NICHT GEBUCHT!

Emirates airline posts record $4.7 billion profit on soaring travel demand

The dubai airline's business outlook is 'positive', with demand to 'remain strong' in coming months.

Emirates , the world's largest long-haul airline, is in a "strong position" for future growth after it posted a record annual profit by expanding its route network and increasing capacity to meet strong global travel demand.

The airline is optimistic about demand remaining strong in the coming months, while it will monitor costs, fuel prices and the impact of sociopolitical changes, it said on Monday.

Emirates posted a profit of Dh17.2 billion ($4.7 billion) in its financial year that ended on March 31, up 63 per cent from Dh10.6 billion profitin the previous year, driven by a "voracious appetite" for travel across customer segments, it said.

Revenue jumped by 13 per cent on an annual basis to Dh121.2 billion, despite the impact of currency fluctuations, as the airline carried more passengers during the year.

“Throughout the year, we saw high demand for air transport and travel-related services around the world, and because we were able to move quickly to deliver what customers want, we achieved tremendous results,” Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed , chairman and chief executive of Emirates airline and Group, said.

“We are reaping the benefit of years of non-stop investments in our products and services, in building strong partnerships, and in the capabilities of our talented people.”

The Emirates Group also announced a Dh4 billion dividend for its owner, the Investment Corporation of Dubai.

The airline's financial performance comes amid a rebound in international travel after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dubai recorded an 11 per cent increase in tourist numbers from January to March this year as the emirate continued to benefit from a rebound in global travel demand .

The city hosted 5.18 million international overnight visitors in the first quarter of 2024, compared with 4.67 million tourist arrivals during the same period a year earlier, according to data published by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism on May 6.

Dubai is building a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International – the emirate's second airport also known as Dubai World Central – as its main hub, Dubai International, inches closer to full capacity.

Emirates said it carried 51.9 million passengers, 19 per cent more than the previous financial year, while its seat capacity increased by 21 per cent.

Passenger seat factor, a measure of how well an airline fills available seats, rose to 79.9 per cent, compared with 79.5 per cent in its last financial year.

The airline restarted services to Tokyo Haneda airport, added capacity to 29 destinations and launched new daily flights to Montreal, Canada.

Emirates also signed new codeshare and interline agreements with 11 airlines, further extending its network’s reach.

As of March 31, its network spanned 151 destinations, including 10 cities served by its freighter fleet only.

Industry headwinds

The carrier's performance comes amid a challenging operating environment for airlines, including high fuel prices, economic uncertainty and the Israel-Gaza war that has continued for more than seven months.

Emirates' passenger yield declined 2 per cent to 36.6 fils per revenue passenger kilometre (RPKM), due to a change in cabin and route mix, fares and currency, the airline said.

Profitability took a Dh2 billion hit due to currency fluctuations and devaluations in some of its major markets, mainly in Pakistan, Egypt and India.

"Emirates continued with its balanced approach to managing the foreign exchange rate risk through use of currency options, forward contracts and natural hedges," it said.

Emirates' total operating costs increased 8 per cent year-on-year, mainly on higher cost of ownership (depreciation and amortisation of aircraft), fuel costs and employee cost.

Fuel accounted for 34 per cent of operating costs, compared with 36 per cent in the previous year.

The airline’s fuel bill increased slightly to Dh34.2 billion, from Dh33.7 billion in the previous year. A higher fuel uplift of 24 per cent due to increased flying was balanced by a lower average fuel price (down 18 per cent) including hedging gains, it said.

"In response to the challenges posed by volatile fuel markets during the financial year, Emirates deployed simple forwards and options across different products such as Brent and jet fuel to reduce current year costs as well as secure significant future hedging volumes," it said.

It also "largely mitigated" the effects of the higher interest rates on its results with effective management of the net exposure.

Still, the airline closed the year with its highest level of cash assets at Dh42.9 billion, up 15 per cent compared with the end of March 2023.

The airline said its strong performance enabled it to meet all its regular aircraft-related payment obligations and repaid an additional Dh2.2 billion from the Dh17.5 billion borrowed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This reduced its overall outstanding debt and “places the airline on a strong foundation” for financing for its future growth and the new fleet acquisition programme, it said.

Emirates will receive 10 new Airbus A350 aircraft in 2024-2025, adding the aircraft type to its fleet for the first time. The delivery will support the next phase of its network growth.

Emirates’ order book stands at 310 aircraft, after it announced orders worth $58 billion at list prices, for 110 additional Boeing 777s, Boeing 787s and Airbus A350s at the Dubai Airshow in November 2023.

Record group profit

Emirates Group, which includes global airport services company Dnata, posted a record profit of Dh18.7 billion, a jump of 71 per cent year on year.

Group revenue increased by 15 per cent on an annual basis to a record Dh137.3 billion, driven by strong customer demand across its businesses, it said.

The group ended the financial year with its highest cash balance yet of Dh47.1 billion.

Dnata's profit quadrupled to Dh1.4 billion amid growth across its business divisions, while its revenue rose by 29 per cent to a record Dh19.2 billion.

In terms of air freight, Emirates' cargo arm carried 2.2 million tonnes of goods, up 18 per cent from the previous year, as increased passenger operations expanded the available belly-cargo capacity. The leasing of three Boeing 747 freighters unlocked immediate capacity to serve demand on busy routes.

Emirates SkyCargo's revenue reached Dh13.6 billion, contributing 11 per cent to the airline’s total revenue. However, cargo yield per freight tonne kilometre (FTKM) declined 32 per cent, returning to pre-pandemic market levels.

Emirates Group’s total workforce grew 10 per cent to 112,406 employees, reaching its largest size ever, as the airline and dnata continued to hire staff around the world to support expanding operations and bolstering future capabilities, it said.

'Positive' outlook

Looking to the future, Emirates is bullish on continued future growth. "The business outlook is positive and we expect customer demand for air transport and travel to remain strong in the coming months," Sheikh Ahmed said.

The airline assessing external headwinds and is confident about coping with challenges.

"As always, we will keep a close watch on costs and external factors such as oil prices, currency fluctuations and volatile environments caused by sociopolitical changes," Sheikh Ahmed said.

"Our business model has been tested before, and I am confident in our resilience and ability to respond quickly to opportunities and challenges.”

Dubai's plans to build a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, which is to become the new hub for Emirates and dnata’s operations, will "significantly expand" the city's aviation and logistics infrastructure and support the growth of Emirates’ and dnata’s growth, he added.

Dubai, UAE, 15 May 2024 – dnata, a leading global air and travel services provider, signed significant deals with leading manufacturers, locking in five-year global framework contracts for new Ground Support Equipment (GSE) at the Dubai Airport Show. These contracts boast an estimated total value of over US$ 210 million over their lifespan.

dnata has already committed orders worth over US$ 29 million from the agreements, setting firm foundations for future transactions over the next five years. The advanced vehicles will further enhance efficiency, safety and sustainability across dnata’s global network, helping it to continue to deliver world-class services for its over 330 airline customers.

The contracts include a planned investment of over US$ 100 million in GSE for dnata’s Dubai fleet, driven by sustained solid demand and projected further, significant growth. dnata currently operates a fleet of 2,500 motorised GSE at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) airports, providing quality and safe services to over 190 airlines.

The GSE will be provided by eight international manufacturers, with deliveries starting from May 2024.
