Frequently Asked Questions

The country’s rugged beauty and varied landscapes means it’s always a good time to go backpacking in New Zealand! The summer months (December to March) bring long, sunny days perfect for spending outdoors, the winter months (June to September) bring snow to the South Island and parts of the North, and the shoulder seasons bring milder weather and fewer visitors.

You'll be surprised with how affordable tours in NZ can be! From 9 to 17 days, our Intro and Adventure tour options include all transport, stunning accomodation, some meals, an awesome tour guide and an awesome group of new friends to travel with. Simply scroll down for our pricing, and secure a space on our trips from $400/ £200/ €200

From years of experience operating in this beautiful country, we know 9 - 17 days is the most optimal amount of time to spend in NZ. This gives you enough time to see the best of either the South or North Island (9 days) or both Islands across 17 days!

If you’re planning a short visit and are from Australia, the UK, Canada, USA, or any of the countries on this list , you do not need a visa to enter but do require an NZ ETA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) which can be requested online. Most people who do NZ Intro need a Working Holiday Visa. A WHV is usually available to those aged 18 - 30 and valid for 12 or 23 months.

If you are doing an INTRO Travel group tour in NZ, all of your accommodation and transport are included, plus some meals and an awesome tour guide. A traveler staying long-term for work should be arriving with $4000 NZD to support yourself until you begin work.

While a week can be enough time to experience some of the North or South islands, we usually recommend you stay a little longer, so you can properly enjoy all of the incredible things this country has to offer without missing anything. By joining one of our group tours we’ll fit as much into the time you have available as possible, with all the best bucket list inclusions sorted for you!

A group tour that includes a balance of both the North & South Islands is the best way to see NZ! Having all of your accommodation, transport, activities and some meals already organised for you means you can fully enjoy the destination without any added stresses.

Reviews of Small Group tours to New Zealand

Everyday was different. A well planned out tour giving a rich experience. You want to know what Maori culture is in a short time? This is it!!!!!!
One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.
This tour is excellent for anyone wanting a quick trip to see all the major spots in the South Island. Heaps of amazing activities that you can do. Highly recommend going for walks at each spot to find all the hidden gems. :)

Flights Included as Part of Your Small Group Tour

As an ATOL bonded tour operator, we can book flights on your behalf with any of the major airlines flying out of the UK… something many New Zealand tour operators don’t offer.

If you would like to book your flights through us, just let us know which route you would like to fly and in which class – Business, Premium Economy or Economy – and we’ll provide you with a quote as part of your small group holiday.

In most cases, you will not have to pay for your flights until your balance is due.

Stopovers in the Best Locations

Jetlag can definitely dampen the enjoyment of the first few days of your holiday, so we recommend adding a stopover on the way to New Zealand , even if you decided to fly straight home at the end of your trip.

The most popular destinations are the key hubs of Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

We can book excellent hotels in these locations and recommend tried and tested sightseeing activities, too.

Pre-Tour and Post Tour Arrangements

If you’d like to spend some time in New Zealand before your tour starts, we are able to arrange accommodation in your tour hotel to save you changing rooms. We can also organise your transfer from the airport.

Similarly, at the end of your holiday, extra nights can be added to your tour itinerary. More extensive arrangements are also possible, just get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Got a few questions about your planned trip?

travel groups new zealand

The Buck Stops With Us!

All our small group trips are operated by us through our Hamilton Office under our brand, Pure Discoveries.

No third parties are involved which means if you have a problem, an issue to sort out or a question, we’re always on hand to provide the answer.

Small Group Means Small Group

The maximum number of travellers we take on a small group tour is sixteen, but in practice the average Pure Discoveries group size is eight to ten participants.

Comfortable Travel Close Up

Our coaches are very comfortable and well maintained with great legroom, headroom and panoramic windows so you can really take in the beauty of New Zealand.

On a small group tour, you’ll experience a wonderful mix of incredible scenery including golden sandy beaches, sparkling clear rivers and lakes, ice age glaciers, thermal hot springs, majestic fiords and ancient forests.

We think New Zealand should be experienced up close, so we always encourage you to get out of your seat and into the landscape to explore at every opportunity – with a local guide on hand to tell you all about it, too!

Good Company

In a small group, it’s easy to find common ground with fellow travellers and enjoy a variety of dinner table conversations.

We dispense with “coach tour” admin, like asking you to wear a name badge, we think good manners and good humour are more important than strict timekeeping.

Discovering New Zealand in this way offers potential for serendipitous surprises and a lot of fun.

Great Leaders, Expert Guides

New Zealanders are rightly proud of their country and aware that visitors have travelled a long way.

Kiwi’s are passionate about showing visitors the best of New Zealand. So not only are our hand-picked tour leaders safe drivers in all conditions, but they are also happy personalities, full of knowledge and enthusiasm, insights and practical advice.

At certain points on the tour, we meet up with a local guide to add his or her expertise to enhance your experience. These include Kiwis who are wildlife, eco, geothermal or Maori specialists with whom you can engage on a personal level and really engage with what New Zealand has to offer.

Flexible Schedules

With a small group, we can be more flexible with each day’s timetable, creating opportunities for surprise encounters and time for stops en route.

So, if someone spots a Takahe, we can stop for a photo and if it’s 90 degrees in the shade we can cool down at the beach before we hit the road again. It’s all about that New Zealand life, in every way!

Ready to plan the trip of a lifetime?

travel groups new zealand

Combine Independent Travel with a Small Group Tour

Since we operate both independent tailored holidays and escorted group holidays, you can combine these to create your own unique tour of New Zealand and experience the best of both worlds.

Begin on North Island by joining our Koromiko Tour and arrive in Wellington to commence your own trip, or vice versa. Travel independently through North Island and then join our Mount Cook Lily tour of the South Island. Whatever works best for you.

Your Choice

Our tours include a choice of experiences in four key locations: the Bay of Islands , Rotorua , Abel Tasman National Park and Wanaka .

For example, if you are a Lord of the Rings fan and want to experience all things Middle Earth, you can visit Hobbiton from Rotorua while your partner marvels at the geothermal sights of Waimangu Thermal Valley – all these are included in the tour price.

In other locations, you’ll also have free time to enjoy optional experiences at your own cost, or just take the time to chill out and relax.

The choice is always yours.

You’re Sure of a Warm Welcome

Our smaller groups means we are not confined to staying at large mass-market hotels and we’re able to include a wonderful mix of accommodation .

Sometimes we choose a large city hotel because of its central location, but wherever possible, we opt for tried and tested smaller family-run properties with their own character so that you can enjoy some real Kiwi hospitality.

Guaranteed Departures

All our small group tour dates are guaranteed departures. So, whether we have half a dozen travellers or a full complement of passengers, you can rest assured you can make your international travel plans accordingly, without concerns as to whether your holiday will go ahead or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is each day’s drive?

It does vary. We like to get you out of the coach as much as possible – so even on the longer drives there will be frequent stops. An average daily drive would be 4 hours. There are longer drives, closer to five hours from Napier to Wellington, from Fox Glacier to Wanaka and from Mount Cook to Christchurch.

How can we do our washing on tour?

There are laundrettes in nearly all the accommodations where you’ll stay. All you need is plenty of 20c coins!

What are the advantages of having a tour guide?

One of the major benefits of having a tour guide when travelling around New Zealand is the insider knowledge they’re able to share with you. At Silver Fern Holidays , we work closely with hand-picked tour guides to ensure you’re going to be travelling with passionate Kiwi’s who are excited to share their beautiful country with you.

Because we travel in small groups, we’re able to offer more flexibility than larger tour groups. This means none of our tours are ever exactly the same, something our travellers absolutely love. Every experience will be completely unique to you and your group. If you’ve reached a destination a little early, your driver guide might show you their favourite local coffee shop, or one of New Zealand’s many hidden gems that the internet just won’t share with you.

A major stress when organising self-guided tours is needing to deal with admin like renting cars or buying train and bus tickets. You don’t need to worry about any of this when joining our small group tour. Our tour guides are also experienced drivers, so you can just sit back, relax and soak up the scenery while they take you where you need to go.

Is it better to travel alone or in a group?

What we have found during our years organising tours and tailor-made holidays in New Zealand, is that there’s no ‘better’ way to travel. It will just come down to how you enjoy travelling.

There are however a number of advantages to travelling in a group . Travelling in a group allows you to experience New Zealand with other like-minded travellers. You can also enjoy the experience of one of our travel guides and see New Zealand through a local’s eyes. We also purposefully keep our groups small so you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and have time on your own to enjoy the sights.

On the other hand, travelling alone can give you more freedom to curate your own holiday schedule. This means if you plan to visit somewhere like Hawkes Bay and decide you need longer to see it all, you can! If you feel that you’d prefer to travel alone, we can help you build your perfect itinerary filled with unforgettable New Zealand experiences .

What are the different roles of a tour guide?

A tour guide’s main job is to ensure that you have an incredible time exploring New Zealand. Of course, it takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make this happen!

Our driver guides will transport you in one of our 16-seater Pure Discoveries vehicles. Where possible, we take the roads less-travelled so you can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery.

Our guides will ensure you keep to your itinerary so you’re able to see everything you’re meant to, and maybe even some hidden gems along the way!

Your driver won’t just take you from A to B, that’s not the Silver Fern way! All of our drivers are hand-picked by us and love sharing their beautiful islands with travellers. As you travel, our drivers will be able to tell you local stories, show you their favourite places, and importantly, give you a true taste of Kiwi humour.

Are tour groups worth it?

Yes! If you’re looking to make friends with other passionate travellers, tour groups are a great way to meet and explore with like-minded people.

That’s not to say you need to be a social butterfly to enjoy a group journey as all of our small group tours have a maximum of 16 travellers per group. This means you can still have an intimate travel experience with time to explore the sights by yourself.

A tour group ensures you have an itinerary that has been planned by expert travel guides to get the most out of your time in New Zealand. All of our drivers have experience sharing their beautiful islands with travellers and can offer a unique, local perspective you can’t utilise when travelling solo.

Can you see New Zealand in 2 weeks?

To fully explore both islands, we would recommend longer than 14 days. New Zealand is filled with beautiful sights and rich culture. The North Island is home to the country’s vibrant capital Wellington and the beautiful port city of Auckland . The South Island is a popular destination for thrill seekers with the adventure capital Queenstown , but there’s also Dunedin with its unforgettable nature and wildlife.

This means there is a lot to see, especially for such a small country! Our 23 day Kauri small group tour is perfect for taking you through the snow-capped alps, tropical rainforests and everything in between. This is a wonderful tour to learn about the history of New Zealand, which the Maori call Aotearoa.

We appreciate that time and budgets can be limited though. This is why our passionate team have created shorter tours that still allow you to see New Zealand’s plentiful sights on a tighter schedule. Our shorter small group tours focus on either the North or South Island so that you don’t have to rush and can fully enjoy each place you visit.

The Koromiko 11 day tour is our shortest, focusing on the stunning sights of the North Island from the Bay of Islands down to Wellington. Our 14 day Mount Cook Lily tour shows you some of New Zealand’s most awe inspiring sights such as the Fiordland, the majestic Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and, of course, the incredible Mount Cook.

If you’re struggling to decide which island to visit, get in touch with a member of our team and we’ll be happy to talk through your travel needs. Whichever group journey you choose, we’re sure you’ll fall in love.

There are many ways to see New Zealand and no matter which way you decide to go, you’re likely to have an incredible time because New Zealand is, for want of a better word... awesome. But with your well-deserved vacation time and hard-earned dollars at the forefront of your mind, no doubt you want to be sure you’re doing it all justice by choosing the absolute best way to spend your time in New Zealand.

Here at New Zealand Trails , we pride ourselves in offering our discerning guests the very finest in New Zealand hiking and adventure tours and we humbly challenge any naysayers to prove us wrong! If you’re currently umming and ahhing over the best way to see New Zealand, read on for an insight into why small group tours of New Zealand might be just the thing you’re looking for.

Why do New Zealand small group tours work so well?

New Zealand is a country of relatively petite proportions, it’s possible to drive from one end of the country to the other in about 24 hours if you were driving non-stop and didn’t look up from the road the whole time. At the other end of the scale, thinking about somewhere like Australia (which is HUGE) , it’s much easier to fly from place to place, rather than drive. You could drive for days through the desert, without so much as a piece of tumbleweed to keep you company.

Here in New Zealand though, despite our somewhat diminutive size, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to our scenery. As a nation of road-trippers, we’re used to hitting the road to get to our favourite holiday spots. No matter where you’re headed, the journey is typically all part of the adventure as you travel via golden sand beaches, thick rainforests, alpine passes and glacial lakes.

Sealy Tarns, Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park

Finding a place to stay

If you’re won over by the thought of travelling New Zealand by road, but perhaps you’re leaning towards a campervan or hire car, bear in mind you’ll have to carefully plan out your route, considering the weather and any road closures. You’ll also need to book your accommodations well in advance and you’ll have to do plenty of research, relying on online reviews to ensure you don’t wind up staying at Fawlty Towers or the Bates Motel - hyperbole, but you get my point.

Group Travel in New Zealand

  • Miles Clark
  • Before you visit NZ , NZ Travel Info , Travelling Alone NZ

Planning a trip to New Zealand and still unsure of how to see the country? Jump online and you know you’ve got choice for your trip, you can travel in a group or do your own thing. Whether you’re visiting the South, North or both islands, there’s a lot to see and do in our beautiful country and no doubt you want to find the right fit for your trip. Here’s a handy guide to group travel in New Zealand, including a comparison of group vs solo travel and some planning tips for your trip, from your friends at MoaTrek.

There are two types of people in this world: Those that travel and those that don’t. You’re reading this so we’d like to welcome you to the inspired, open-minded, and passionate tribe of world travellers.

Now, in your tribe, there are two sub-species: the solo traveller and the group traveller. Both are valid ways of travelling and you probably have your own preference. Each style of travel has its pros and cons. But if you’re considering a group tour of New Zealand, let us explain why group travel is a great way to see the country.

Despite the fact that many travellers like to do things on their own, we humans are programmed to thrive in groups. That’s often why we join clubs, societies, dance classes, and the like. In these get-togethers, like-minded individuals offer each other support and encouragement. The camaraderie really can make the experience so much more enjoyable.

In the case of group travel, simply experiencing a sunset, mountain vista, or valley landscape is often more fun with others. The solo traveller only has his or her own thoughts to share the new experience, while the group members smile together, take photos, and hug each other (this part is optional but pretty common).

Planning a group trip to New Zealand?

You don’t have to worry about the actual travel logistics. That’s all taken care of on a group travel tour. The only thing that you need to concern yourself with is bringing your toothbrush or enough pairs of underwear. Of course, you’ll need to do a bit of pre-planning to find the right trip (see below) but once that’s confirmed, let the experts do the hard work.

When your travel plans are already taken care of you can waste less time searching booking sites, TripAdvisor, and other forums to get the latest info. Instead, spend your time dreaming about the adventure coming up or bragging to our friends about the exciting things you’ll be doing.

Going with an established group tour operator means travel experts have done all the homework for you and are playing with “home field advantage”, if you like. Thanks to years in the New Zealand group tour game, we know what our guests like, and we know how to find the best experiences all over the country.

Don’t get us wrong, solo travel is great. We love it, but we’re also aware of the time it takes to find out which buses go where, what’s open and closed on public holidays, how to get from A to B without getting ripped off, and so on.

Many solo trips cost far more than a group travel tour, if not in money, in time spent planning. Companies that run group tours already have relationships with hotels, tourist attractions, activities, and restaurants. In small countries like New Zealand this can make all the difference, you try and find a room in Queenstown for mid February all on your own, it can take a long long time.

How to plan your group trip

1. First, book those flights!

This will be one of your biggest expenses so it’s worth securing the right dates at the right price. Try to match your flights up with the available dates of your preferred tour. Good tour companies will have plenty of options.

2. Learn when the best time to visit New Zealand is

Want sunshine and warm air? Summer in New Zealand runs from December to February. If you’d prefer some winter activities and snow-capped mountain vistas, head down in June, July, or August. Here’s a handy guide to the weather and climate in each part of New Zealand throughout the year.

3. Know where you’re going.

When you find a tour that sparks your imagination, research the destinations on the tour.

Although everything will be arranged for you it’s worth knowing a few details in case you have any pre-trip questions. If there’s something you’re not sure about contact the tour company. They’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

4. Personal time accessories

Bring any equipment or items you might need for the downtime. Every tour will have personal time for guests. This is the part of the day when the tour bus has arrived, the local sights have been seen and there’s time to relax or enjoy your own personal interests.

Bring that camera, sketchbook, fishing rod, or yoga mat. You’ll have plenty of time to pursue your own hobbies. Of course, if you want to be around your fellow travellers, just drop a few hints! Someone will always be interested in sharing time over a coffee, beer, or going for a stroll. If your plan is to try paragliding you might not have as many takers, however.

5. Don’t forget the family and friends back home!

Consider getting a mobile phone or SIM card in New Zealand for your trip. Roaming charges can be expensive so a local SIM is the best option to save you some dollars. Send an email to the tour organiser and ask for their recommendations on the best SIM card and where to get one when you arrive.

You can then amaze/annoy/bore everyone back home with photos and messages about beautiful New Zealand.

6. Scan and print a copy of your passport.

You never know when you’ll need it. Do it before you leave so you don’t have to think about it later on.

7. Check the cancellation policy.

When booking well in advance it’s worth knowing where you stand if you have to cancel for any reason.

8. Get a second opinion.

Look around for reviews on Google, TripAdvisor, Yelp, and official tourism websites such as the New Zealand Tourism Guide for opinions and comments about tour providers. We don’t suggest relying entirely on these reviews but they will help form an opinion.

9. Contact tour companies and ask questions.

Their responses will be a good indication of how professional and helpful they are. Do they respond quickly? Are they helpful? Do you get a stock answer or a personalised response? Are they pushy or do they aggressively up-sell?

If you get a bad feeling about any company, move on to the next.

Travelling with strangers – it’s a good thing

There’s a saying, “A stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet”. We’re not quite sure who said this first, but they must have been a traveller. You’re never alone on a group tour. Meeting new people is often hard to do but there’s something about the shared experience of travelling long distances that makes people bond.

We know that when group travellers see Mitre Peak in Fiordland, Mt Cook, or the dolphins in the Bay of Islands they share the same emotions. It’s the first time for everyone. There’s something about this that breaks the ice between strangers.

We won’t deny that travelling with strangers can come with challenges from time to time. Despite the fact that for everyone holidays are a happy time, some people just don’t gel with each other. Of course, if this happens to you, discreetly mention it to the tour organizer who will do their best to manage seating arrangements.

Safety in numbers

Ever travelled alone and had the dilemma of what to do with your luggage when you need to visit the toilet in a restaurant or busy train. When you’re travelling with other people your belongings will be safe while you take care of business. You can even leave your bags behind and explore on your own if your companions agree.

There’s nothing worse than arriving at a beautiful beach with nowhere to leave your stuff while you take a dip in the ocean or lake water. At times like these it’s great to have friends to watch your back.

Travelling in numbers is always better for more serious safety concerns. New Zealand is a very safe place but in some countries, travelling alone is a risky undertaking. Even in New Zealand travelling alone for long periods has its own risks. What happens if you have an accident? Getting sick when you’re alone is not only a miserable experience but can be dangerous.

The more vulnerable members of society are often the ones that opportunists target. But nobody will try targeting people in large groups. Groups lead by local guides are even more intimidating to petty criminals.

Solo travellers who want to spend time with other people can use online forums and social media networks such as Meetup and Couchsurfing to find like-minded travel partners. However, these sites cater mostly to the young, backpacker crowd. Safety is a concern as these services are mostly self-vetted. On a tour, you know that everyone has paid for the tour and has provided personal details.

Benefits of group travel

Groups have the muscle to make things happen. Imagine arriving at a port to take a boat to some beautiful island nearby and having to wait till all seats on the boat filled up!

Organised tour groups get around this problem easily. The tour organiser arranges the transport in advance. This can be done thanks to the guarantee of passengers. You only have to jump off the bus and walk straight onto the boat.

The group’s numbers can even make boats leave, parties start, and special events occur, just by turning up.

Sometimes there’s a particular route or itinerary that uses the well-trodden path to a popular attraction. Tour groups can often change the route. This gives them the power to create customised and unique tours. In fact, if your tour is customized you might be one of the only people to experience that particular tour or event.

That’s what we call a personalised service.

Who doesn’t love a bargain? Group tour organisers pass on considerable costs savings to travellers thanks to their ability to get the best deal. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. The promoter is able to bring his event or attraction to a wider audience and the clients get a better price. Everyone is happy.

Why independent travel can be so rewarding

We’ve talked a lot about group tours but there are many reasons why solo travel or independent travel can be just as rewarding.

In our modern lives, there are often few opportunities to spice up our days outside of weekends and holidays. Most of us spend our time commuting, working, and spending precious hours at home with family or friends. There are few options to explore uncharted territory for the average person. If you’re looking for a real break from the routine, independent travel can make a trip exciting by adding a lot of chance, uncertainty, and adventure to your day.

Independent & solo travel allows you to change plans at will, explore opportunities that present themselves only in the moment, and customize plans to your exact requirements (if you have the budget).

Independent travel allows you to form friendships outside of a typical tour group structure and in many ways gets you closer to the local people. Sometimes it’s the small things that make all the difference.

Pros and cons of group travel

Finding the best group tours in new zealand.

New Zealand welcomes over 3 million tourists a year and quite a lot of these people choose to join a tour group. Don’t make the mistake of choosing the first group tour that crosses your path. Do your research and you won’t have any regrets.

What to look for in a group tour:

1. Groups that are not too small or too large. That’s a bit vague we know but we reckon 10 would be the absolute minimum and 30 is the maximum.

Ask your tour provider about the size of the group. With smaller groups there is more room for the personal touch, better attention, and group bonding. Larger groups tend to miss out on all of the above.

2. You probably know how long you can spend on your trip but check to see if a tour suits your schedule. Check if you can extend your trip by a day or two, if required, to get the most bang for the buck. With smaller companies tours might only run every now and again and this might mean scheduling your holiday to suit the company. Here at MoaTrek we have a really comprehensive tour calendar with weekly departures through most of the season, even more at popular times so you’re bound to find something that fits perfectly with your planned vacation time

3. Budget. Find out how many types of tours each company offers. There will be different pricing for the locations visited, length of time of the trips, and activities included. If a tour company only offers one fixed type of tour then you can’t compare options. You should be able to discuss your requirements with each company to find out which tour suits you best. Don’t forget to ask for advice and recommendations. If the tour organisers are professional they will be able to advise on the best tour for you, not just the one that suits them best.

Group Tour or Independent travel – it’s all about having fun!

Sometimes planning a trip can be a bit overwhelming and it’s important to remember that you WILL have an amazing time once you’re here, regardless of whichever travel style you decide is best for you. Here’s a little inspiration for you, see all the fun we had on our trips last season:

North Island vs South Island vs all New Zealand?

This is a tricky question to answer. We love every part of the country so picking an island is like picking a favourite child. Seeing the entire country over a longer period is the best choice but we don’t expect everyone to pause life back home to spend months here (although that would be nice). How long will you have to spend down under?

New Zealand is not a big country (on a world scale). Without stopping, you could probably drive around the coasts of both islands in a week (we don’t recommend attempting this).

If time is limited, you could try a 4-day tour of the North Island. This won’t include the mountains and rainforests of the South Island but it will give you a good insight into Kiwi culture and gives you a glimpse of some beautiful parts of the country that many tourists miss.

Here’s how to pick between the two islands:

North Island

  • Warmer climate
  • More beach oriented options
  • More Maori and Pacific Island nation culture up North
  • Arguably more interesting and cosmopolitan cities. You’ll have better opportunities for sipping coffee or wine in bars and cafes in Auckland, Wellington, and Tauranga.
  • Geothermal activity is concentrated on the volcanic North Island
  • Rotorua gives Queenstown a run for its money in the adventure capital rankings.
  • A circuit of the North Island takes a little less time than the South Island

South Island

  • Whales, dolphins, seals, penguins and other wildlife are easier to see down south
  • Queenstown is there
  • Although the north has mountains, the real ones are down south, including Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest.
  • If you want to stretch your legs, the South Island has more of the Great Walks. It also has more walking and hiking opportunities than the North Island.
  • A wilder feel than the North Island and less crowded, although we don’t think anywhere in NZ is ‘crowded’.

Travelling with friends or family

Group travel doesn’t mean travelling exclusively with soon-to-be-friends. Old friends (or even family) travelling together can be heaps of fun. New Zealand is a great destination for a touring group of friends thanks to the language (English with a Kiwi accent), climate (not too hot or cold), infrastructure (great roads, communications, and facilities). More ‘exotic’ locations like Mexico, Indonesia, or Thailand, popular group travel destinations in their own right, can suffer from problems such as outdated infrastructure, heat, and natural disasters. We must mention that we have had a couple of natural disasters in recent years but thankfully these events are very rare.

Lose the guidebook

Guidebooks are overrated. By the time guidebooks get to print they’re out of date. Worse, any attraction or service recommended in a popular guidebook gets overrun with visitors pretty quickly. Local guides (and we mean real people) have up to the minute information on what to do and where to do it. Our local Kiwi guides live this life every day so they know how to avoid the tourist traps, skip the queues and find all the best secret spots.

There’s also something nice about receiving helpful tips and guidance on travel in a foreign land from a trusted local source. You can’t trust everything you read online but you can trust a real guide whose business depends on their credibility and integrity.

Group tour vs solo travel conclusion

There are many factors to consider when choosing your mode of travel. Each person’s circumstances will influence the decision. Age, travel experience, budget, personality, and tolerance for other people will all play a part in your final choice.

A 22-year old introvert with 5 years of solo travel experience will most likely continue travelling alone. Someone that has limited travel experience, and enjoys the company of others might feel more comfortable on a group tour.

Our table of Pros and Cons above will help you decide what is best for you. Ask your potential tour operator about the age group, status, and characteristics of typical clients on their tours. If you feel like you could be part of that group and it would enhance your experience, go for it. On our group tours we host travellers from all over the world every summer, and they love the experience of travelling in a small friendly group led by our expert Kiwi Guides. See for yourself, here’s what people say about our tours here.

The beauty of group tours is access to your own personal resource for the best tips and recommendations. This is pure gold in the form of your smiling Kiwi Guide.

People love to throw around the phrase ‘natural beauty’. Then they go to New Zealand.

The ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’ – it’s a classic Kiwi understatement if there ever was one. And while most travelers are drawn to New Zealand for those epic experiences out in nature – the open spaces, the dusted peaks, the lakes that pop with blue and make a mockery of Instagram filters – that stuff is just the tip of the glacier. From the feather-clad harbingers of Maoritanga to the happening backstreets of Wellington and Dunedin, to the natural beauty of Milford Sound , this country jumps with vitality in more ways than simply geological. Come for the epic trails and bubbling geysers, stay for the friendliest folk in the southern hemisphere.

Best time to visit new zealand.

The most pleasant time for traveling throughout New Zealand is summer (December to February); however, this is also the busiest period, especially during school holidays (late December to late January). Winter can get very cold with frequent snowfall - but this is the perfect time to travel if you’re looking to ski or snowboard, particularly in the South Island. Culture and customs

Modern New Zealand is home to a diverse blend of people from far and wide. Maori, Pacific Islander, European and Asian influences blend peacefully to create a vibrant culture. Known for being friendly, down-to-earth, laidback and open, most visitors will find New Zealanders from all ethnicities to be helpful, approachable, generous and up for a laugh.

Maori culture has its origins in Polynesia so some aspects of Maori language, customs and traditions are quite similar to those of neighboring islands. With strong traditional values based on respect for the family, ancestors and the land, Maori culture is hierarchical and steeped in centuries of tradition. Maori families typically come together for special occasions, celebrations and ceremonies filled with sacred dance, spiritual song and traditional food.

Visitors will see traditional Maori art and carving almost everywhere they go in New Zealand, from elaborate tattooing to carved necklaces. Although Maori culture experienced a decline after the arrival of European settlers, it experienced a renaissance of sorts in the 1960s, which continues to grow today.

Eating and drinking

With award-winning wineries, quality craft-beer bars, a world-class restaurant scene and a multitude of farmers' markets, eating in New Zealand is a real treat. Its Pacific location gives it an interesting mix of flavors, as European influences mesh with Asian and Polynesian.

When it comes to food – or kai , in the Maori language – there’s nothing quite like tucking into a traditional hangi dinner. It’s a hearty repast, fit for a warrior, cooked underground on heated rocks. Today’s hangi feast most often comprises slow-roasted meats, potatoes and stuffing, though there are many variations.

At the other end of the spectrum, there’s the seafood. The locals are spoiled for choice on this front – being an island nation definitely has its advantages. Fresh prawns, lobster, mussels and oysters are in abundance all year round, but fish and chips on the beach can be just as satisfying, especially for those on a budget.

Must-try food and drink in New Zealand

1. Wine & craft beer

Producing a huge variety of top-quality wines (many more than just the famous Sauvignon Blancs), New Zealand is full of vineyards and cellar doors to visit. Microbreweries are well represented too; the Kiwis more than pull their weight in the global small-batch craft beer movement, especially in Wellington.

2. Crayfish

There are plenty of places to try crayfish, but Kaikoura, near the top of the South Island, is the best. This sperm whale-watching capital of the world was in fact named after the crayfish (Kaikoura translates to ‘eat crayfish’ in Maori), and there’s a slew of places along the beach to sample the day’s fresh catch.

With sheep playing a huge part in New Zealand’s agricultural economy, it’s no wonder succulent lamb can be found in most restaurants. If you’re a meat lover, don’t leave New Zealand without tasting the lamb (if you’re indulging in a hangi feast, chances are you will).

4. Kiwis, Feijoas & Tamarillos

Though none of them actually originated in New Zealand (Kiwis came from China; Feijoas and Tamarillos came from South America), these fruits have become synonymous with New Zealand and are all fairly major exports. While kiwi fruit is well known to most of us, it’s the feijoas and tamarillos you should take advantage of while in New Zealand. Abundant, versatile and an acquired taste, they pop up everywhere from roadside stalls to front-garden giveaways to gourmet cafe dishes.

Even though the creator of this desert is hotly contested by their trans-Tasman cousins, the pavlova – a dessert with a meringue-like base and topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit - was the invention of a Wellington chef to honor Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova's tour of Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. It’s a must-try for sweet tooths.

Top 10 wine regions of New Zealand

1. marlborough.

New Zealand’s wine capital produces top quality chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot gris but it’s the sauvignon blanc that has achieved cult status around the world. Also producing first-class seafood and olive oil, Marlborough is a fave with foodies and wine lovers.

2. Canterbury

With the ideal climate for grape growing, Canterbury produces many internationally acclaimed wine varieties, including pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay and Riesling. Pegasus Bay Winery is one of the most popular in this area, and with a restaurant attached to the winery visitors can indulge in the complete culinary experience.

3. Bay of Plenty

This picturesque area may be well known for its pristine beaches, but it’s also got a few small wineries well worth visiting. Surrounding berry farms, orchards and lavender fields add to the charm.

4. Auckland

There are many boutique wineries creating note-worthy drops in and around Auckland. Kumeu, Henderson and Waiheke Island are hotspots for wine tourism – with awarded wines coming from many small, up-and-coming estates.

5. Central Otago

Spectacular mountain ranges, azure lakes and rolling rivers combine to create one of the world's most scenic wine regions. The vineyards of Central Otago produce a wide range of grapes, but the pinot noir is considered the best.

6. Northland

Way up north, the vineyards populating the historic Northland area produce a wide range of reds and whites. From iconic chardonnay to the more complex chambourcin and exotic syrah, there are loads of cellar doors waiting to welcome you.

7. Hawke’s Bay

New Zealand’s oldest wine-growing region also produces most of New Zealand’s most sustainable wines. This commitment to sustainability in the industry has garnered worldwide attention, as has its bold, full-bodied reds. The Art Deco town of Napier is well worth a visit too.

8. Gisborne

If you like your wines a little fruity then the Gisborne region will impress. Merlot, gewurztraminer, syrah and chardonnay are among the best on offer in this region, which is on the same parallel as Malaga and Melbourne.

Winemaking is considered an art form in cultured Nelson. With many unique producers in the region, it won’t be hard to find some smooth wines to savor. Local delis, cafes, providores and galleries add to the artistic, gastronomic mix.

10. Wairarapa

This relatively small winemaking region is made up of three sub-regions: Martinborough, Masterton and Gladstone. Although only a small amount of New Zealand's wine is produced here, the quality is superb with a great track record in pumping out world-class pinot noir.

Learn more about Maori culture

With a nice little mix of malls, boutiques, galleries, fresh produce markets, cellar doors and providores, New Zealand has enough variety to keep most keen shoppers happy. Look beyond the tourist shops selling stuffed toys and flags and dig a little deeper to find unique art, locally-made crafts and gourmet goods.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in New Zealand

1. Tasty treats

New Zealand is home to many producers of fine food. Home-grown wine, olive oil, honey, jam and avocado oil are among the best picks.

With a huge sheep population, the quality and variety of wool is superb in New Zealand. As well as the classic Merino option, consider buying some gloves or socks made from possum wool – it’s durable, warm and a good environmental choice (the possum population poses a major threat to the endangered Kiwi bird).

3. Art and handicrafts

From ceramic bowls to metal sculptures, woodcarvings to greenstone jewelry, you'll find traditional Maori techniques and influences in many of New Zealand’s art and crafts. Try to find authentic, locally made items rather than imported (and inferior!) goods.

Geography and environment

Sitting in the South Pacific Ocean, this island nation is split in two – comprising two major landmasses surrounded by several smaller islands. And while there are many natural similarities between the two islands, they each have their own geographical and environmental character.

The mountainous South Island is larger, and its scenery unfolds on a grand scale. One of its crown jewels is Mt Cook, which is both the highest peak in the country and one of the most stunning sights. Fiords, glaciers, rugged bush and rocky coast are also major features of the South Island, and the differences between the likes of Franz Josef Glacier and the rugged Catlins Coast show the island’s great diversity.

The North Island, on the other hand, is more volcanic, though it has three times the population of the south. Typical features include bubbling lakes and mud pools, and geysers that erupt regularly (and spectacularly). The North Island is great for a hike or zip-line through untouched virgin native forests, with large national parks and reserves preserving the nation’s heritage bushland and the iconic Kiwi bird.

History and government

Early history.

Maori tribes, descended from Polynesia, lived in New Zealand for centuries before the arrival of Europeans in the 18th century. Relying on fishing, hunting and foraging, these people were able to live off the land and develop a deep connection with the earth as a result of this.

European settlers caused wide-scale disruption and land loss for the Maoris, which resulted in conflict and displacement in the early days of colonization. The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi officially recognized Maori land ownership, of which the British and Maoris were signatories. This historic agreement is viewed as a pivotal moment in New Zealand’s history and the first important step towards reconciliation between the original inhabitants and settlers.

Recent history

In 1852, New Zealand was granted the right to self-govern and in 1907, independence was granted (although the British monarchy remain as head of state). More recently, New Zealand voted in its first female prime minister in 1997. Jenny Shipley held office for two years, before handing over to another female leader - Helen Clarke, who continued to lead until 2008.  In the last ten years, New Zealand has enjoyed a surge in tourism, partly due to the wealth of wineries, ski fields and nature reserves. The film industry has also been a great champion of New Zealand, with filmmakers enjoying the rugged terrain and relatively cheap costs associated with filming in New Zealand. The Lord of the Rings franchise is probably the most well-known film to be shot in New Zealand and has been largely responsible for putting New Zealand in the international spotlight.  A devastating earthquake hit Christchurch in 2011, resulting in widespread loss of life and infrastructure. Although Christchurch is still rebuilding, visitors are encouraged to visit this spirited city.

Festivals and events

With such an interesting cultural landscape – a fiery combo of Maori culture, Pacific rhythms and the European traditions – New Zealand is a place to celebrate. It’s a country that not only excels at celebrating its indigenous cultures, but embraces the contemporary with a playful zest.

New Zealand Festival

Running each February and March, this is the premier Kiwi art and culture event. From theatre to opera, sculpture to painting, cinema to dance, it’s the best overall window to New Zealand’s broad creative palette. And a strong sense of its roots as a nation, with Maori and Pacific cultures well represented.

International Hobbit Day

Whether you’re a die-hard fan is almost beside the point – this up-and-coming festival is worth it for the backdrop alone. Sample local cheese and wine in the rolling hills of Waikato, which takes on an especially magical atmosphere in the lamplight. A tour of The Hobbit movie set will impress the most cynical of disbelievers.

Queenstown Winter Festival

Bringing in each powdery winter since 1975, the Queenstown Winter Festival usually takes place over a weekend in June. With comedy, food, music and – would you believe it in Queenstown? – adventure sports aplenty, it’s well worth planning your South Island visit around this one. The Monteith’s Dog Derby and Dog Barking Competition is something of an institution.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Waitangi Day

King's Birthday

Please note dates of New Zealand's public holidays may vary.

New programs boost environmentally responsible travel and support economic advancement in local communities across the globe

Following successful pilots, Expedia Group is now accepting submissions

SEATTLE, April 16, 2024  — Expedia Group today announced the launch of two new programs — Destination Climate Champions and the Destination Giveback Initiative — both designed to support destination marketing and management organizations (DMOs) in becoming better environmental stewards and helping ensure travel is truly a force for good in their local communities. The new programs are aligned with  Expedia Group’s  Open World™ social impact and sustainability strategy  and its commitment to building resilient prosperity for destinations across the world.

“Responsible, sustainable travel means experiences that support local communities, while also protecting natural environments. Success requires collective effort – this is critical for the future of global travel,” said Aditi Mohapatra, vice president of Global Social Impact and Sustainability at Expedia Group. “Many DMOs are eager to take proactive actions on sustainability and social impact but may need initial support to get there. Expedia Group has invested in two new programs to further our destination partners’ capabilities, to transform local travel offerings, and empower travelers to make more responsible travel choices.”

Sustainability is a key value of travelers today. According to Expedia Group Media Solutions  research , 90% of consumers already look for sustainable options when booking. And half of consumers would be willing to pay more for a trip if the travel options were more sustainable, meaning destination communities that offer more responsible tourism choices stand to enjoy economic benefits as well . [1]

Taking Climate Action

Expedia Group has partnered with the  Travel Foundation , a leading industry NGO, to launch a first-of-its kind educational program for DMOs called Destination Climate Champions. The online training course and peer learning network equips DMO staff with the knowledge and skills to serve as climate champions and incorporate a climate lens into their day-to-day work, while also creating a destination specific Climate Action Plan. The program further enables DMOs to communicate credibly with travelers about sustainable tourism in their destination and promote more eco-conscious travel.

This program builds on Expedia Group’s own commitment to greener travel and to reaching Net Zero emissions by 2040, all detailed in its  Climate Action Plan  released last year. Recognizing that many DMOs may lack the resources needed to create a tourism-specific Climate Action Plan, the course will help destinations better meet traveler expectations while building community and industry resilience to the impacts of climate change.

The Destination Climate Champions program is being piloted with 30 destinations and three geographic cohorts across Europe, New Zealand, and the Northwest of the U.S. and Canada. The pilot cohorts began the training in February 2024 and the course will be available globally to additional DMOs later this year. There is no cost to participate; interested DMOs can  register here.

“We are excited to embark on this transformative journey and support our DMO partners in this space,” said Rob Torres, senior vice president, Media Solutions at Expedia Group. “We understand that for many of our partners, the topic of sustainability is an urgent issue to address, but is often complex, and it can be hard to know how to put words into meaningful action. Our partnership with Travel Foundation reflects our shared vision of a travel industry that prioritizes both people and the planet. We’re providing DMOs with a step-by-step program that helps them to create a more environmentally-conscious approach to driving demand to their destinations.”

Giving Back to the Community

To further support destinations and local communities, Expedia Group has launched the Destination Giveback Initiative. Expedia Group makes donations to local causes identified together with its DMO partner on behalf of both parties, and provides support to local communities where they need it most while driving tourism growth. Depending on the destination’s overall level of partnership, the selected cause may also receive extra promotion across Expedia Group’s global marketing channels.

As an example, Destination Canada is one of Expedia Group’s most valued destination partners and engaged with the Destination Giveback Initiative in 2023 as part of their overall partnership. Expedia Group made a one-time donation of $100,000 USD to  The Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC).  The fund offers a unique opportunity for travelers, Indigenous businesses and non-Indigenous companies to actively participate in and support Indigenous tourism development.

Travel Trends: Solo Travel

T ravel insurance comparison site Squaremouth reports solo travel is on the rise. 42% of Americans polled say they plan to take a trip by themselves this year. Younger generations lead the trend. The American Express Global Travel Trends Report finds more than 75% of American millennials and Gen Z say they’ll ditch traditional group travel for solo adventures this year.

Six in ten of those considering solo travel this year intend to take two or more such trips, with 66% doing so as a form of self-indulgence.

Intrepid Travel , a small-group travel company that organizes trips for 75,000 people annually, reports that more than 50% of their bookings are from solo travelers. This trend is mirrored by Overseas Adventure Travel , which has increased its single-space availability by 76% in response to growing demand.

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean now offer solo cabins without charging the typical double occupancy fare seen in the past.

No Longer Lonely

Solo travelers’ digital footprint grows as they build community, share their journeys, and connect with like-minded adventurers. Instagram searches of “#solotravel” yield 7 million results.

Why is solo travel capturing the hearts and minds of so many? For one, it offers unparalleled freedom. Travelers can tailor itineraries to their preferences without compromising or negotiating plans. This level of control can lead to more authentic and immersive experiences.

The rise of the mobile workspace also catapulted solo travel to the forefront. Millennials in remote positions can work anywhere and freely travel while keeping their jobs. Most older generations are settled in and remain in traditional workspaces that offer less travel freedom.

Solo travel often fosters personal growth and self-discovery as individuals independently navigate new environments and cultures.

As a travel advisor and writer, I recently took my first solo trip, and it was the most wonderful experience I’ve had in all my travels. Despite suffering from anxiety, fears of inadequacy, and self-doubt, I set off from Scotland to England via train and stayed in York for five days alone.

I slept in, walked through the streets, ate food, and drank coffee alone. I even went on a tour solo. I never once felt lonely, sad, or scared. Instead, I felt energized, independent, and fulfilled. This personal journey reinforced the benefits of solo travel that I often advocate for clients.

Jessy Hamel, a frequent solo traveler, shares her experience. “I’ve been traveling solo since 2018. I’ve made several solo visits to the following locations: London (x3), Edinburgh (x3), Inverness (x2), Amsterdam, Lisbon (x2), and throughout Italy. I started traveling solo because of a broken heart that woke me up… I decided I couldn’t wait for the right person to travel with me the right time to go, or the right amount of money. I just had to go… so I did. It was scary at first but so worth it. It inspired me to take women to Europe in small groups so they’d be brave enough to get out there.”

Safety remains a priority for independent travelers; many seek destinations known for their security and traveler-friendly infrastructure. Some of the safest and most popular solo travel destinations include:

Japan is a top choice for unaccompanied travelers. The region, particularly Tokyo, boasts low crime rates, efficient public transport, friendly locals, and well-lit streets. Solo travelers can easily explore historic temples, bustling markets, and serene parks.

New Zealand

New Zealand offers a safe and welcoming environment with its stunning landscapes and adventure tourism. Queenstown, the world’s adventure capital, is perfect for solo travelers seeking activities like bungee jumping, hiking, and skydiving. The friendly locals and well-maintained facilities make it an ideal destination.

Iceland’s breathtaking natural beauty and low crime rates make it perfect for those seeking tranquility and adventure. The safe capital of Reykjavik offers easy access to stunning landscapes like the Blue Lagoon, Golden Circle , and Northern Lights tours.

This European gem is praised for its safety, hospitality, and vibrant culture, making it ideal for solo exploration. Lisbon’s safe and welcoming atmosphere draws individuals with its historic neighborhoods, vibrant street art, and delicious cuisine.

Canada provides a safe and varied travel experience with its diverse cities and vast wilderness. Vancouver is a safe city for solo travelers, offering a mix of urban and natural attractions, including Stanley Park, Granville Island, and nearby mountains for outdoor adventures.

Scotland is a great solo travel destination known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and friendly locals. Edinburgh is particularly safe and offers a blend of historic sites like Edinburgh Castle , the Royal Mile, vibrant festivals, and cultural experiences.

Switzerland

Famous for its pristine landscapes and efficient public transport, Switzerland is perfect for solo travelers. Zurich is a safe city with a rich cultural scene, a picturesque old town, and easy access to the Swiss Alps for hiking and skiing.

Australia

Australia’s diverse cities and natural wonders appeal to solo travelers. Melbourne is known for its safety, vibrant arts scene, and nearby attractions like the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island. The city’s well-connected public transport makes exploring easy.

Singapore

Known for its cleanliness, safety, and efficiency, Singapore is an excellent destination for independent travelers.
