Holiday travel forecast: What to know before hitting the roads or the skies

Airlines are predicting packed planes this holiday season.

Americans are gearing up to hit the roads and the skies for the holidays -- and airlines are bracing for a packed travel season.

Here's what you need to know before hitting the road or heading to the airport:

Best, worst days to drive

Nearly 102 million Americans -- 90.4% of travelers -- will drive to their holiday destinations, according to AAA.

The worst days to be on the road are Dec. 23, Dec. 27, Dec. 28 and Jan. 2, according to transportation analytics company INRIX.

But if those are your planned travel days, the best times for motorists are 2 p.m. or earlier and after 8 p.m. The best times on Jan. 2 are before 3 p.m. or after 8 p.m., INRIX said.

The best days to drive are Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, according to INRIX.

The best and worst days to drive.

Most expensive and least expensive days to fly

Based on average ticket prices, the most expensive day to leave town for Christmas is Thursday, Dec. 22, followed by Saturday, Dec. 17, and Friday, Dec. 23, according to Expedia.

The cheapest day to fly before Christmas is Dec. 19.

When planning your return trip, avoid flying back on Mon. Dec. 26. Instead, book for Dec. 27 or Dec. 28, according to Expedia.

Looking for the ultimate budget-friendly day? Book a flight for New Year's Eve, according to Expedia, when ticket prices are more than $200 cheaper than average for the holiday period (Dec. 17 to Jan. 1).

Jan. 2 will be United's busiest day

United is planning for more than 8.3 million travelers over the holidays -- about 1.9 million more than last year.

But thanks to remote work, United said the holiday travel period is getting longer and demand is less concentrated on peak days.

Jan. 2 will likely be United's busiest day, when more than 480,000 travelers are expected. The airline said it anticipates setting a new post-pandemic travel record.

Chicago O’Hare will be United's busiest hub, followed by Denver, Newark and Houston, according to the airline.

Dec. 22, Dec. 23 and Dec. 27 peak days for Delta

Delta said it expects about 9 million customers from Dec. 16 to Jan. 3 -- just shy of its 2019 numbers, when the airline had about 9.3 million customers.

Delta’s largest hub, Atlanta, will have more than 800 daily flights on average.

Delta forecasts its peak travel days to be Thursday, Dec. 22, Friday, Dec. 23, and Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Dec. 22 is American's biggest day

American Airlines predicts to see more than 10 million passengers from Dec. 16 to Jan. 2.

American said its busiest day is Dec. 22 with 5,520 departures, followed by Dec. 15 with 5,514 departures.

WELCOME TO MYFLIGHT FORECAST™

MyFlight Forecast™ gives you, the passenger, and access to Flying Weather Forecast data that pilots will review prior to every flight. While a pilot will review much more data, data that they've spent years learning to interpret, this site breaks down the most relevant data for the passenger to determine flight conditions, potential flight and airport delays, and most importantly, flight turbulence forecast.

Weather Radar

Reference Weather Radar to determine the location of precipitation (Snow, Rain) and where it is located relative to your flight path. Pilot Tip - Just because you see areas of precipitation, does not mean that you will necesarily be flying through it! You might be miles above it!

Satellite Imagery

Reference the Satellite page to locate clouds, or areas of decreased visibility. While clouds can generally increase the likelihood of turbulence while flying through them, keep in mind, clouds are just moisture, or water. Water is generally not that scary. Not all clouds that appear on the satellite imagery can guarantee areas of turbulence, it greatly depends on the stability of the atmosphere.

Turbulence Forecast

Get your Flying Weather Forecast before and during your flight - receive real time turbulence reports and discover where turbulence has been reported by aircraft currently in-flight

Airport Delays

Type in the three letter identifier (ex. JFK, LAX, ORD) of the airports that you are travelling to and from, and get real time information on any potential airport delays due to; Wind, Visibility, Weather or delays due to volume.

Thunderstorms expected to hit Florida Friday, Saturday. Will it rain on Mother's Day?

Summer weather has arrived with a vengeance, bringing days with real-feels in the upper 90s across parts of Florida, and thunderstorms are expected to sweep across North and Central Florida Thursday night through Friday bringing rain, hail, localized flooding and potentially tornadoes.

Are you and your mom going to need to take cover on Mother's Day this Sunday?

According to the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service, you might want umbrellas but only to protect yourselves from the blazing sun. Clear, sunny days are expected across the state with temperatures in the mid-to-high 80s with some areas such as Tampa and West Palm Beach reaching temps into the 90s.

In the lower elevations below 7,500 to 8,500 feet, this will fall as rain. Areas above 8,500 feet will see snow, heavy at times, from late this morning into the day on Friday. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Teller County, the Wet Mountains, Sangres and San Juans starting at noon. Our state's central mountain ranges will also be under a Winter Weather Advisory later today and Friday.

Severe Weather Warnings

FORECAST: Ideal conditions to view the Aurora again this evening!

Weather headlines.

  • Cool morning, pleasant afternoon for Mother’s Day Sunday
  • Rain chances return Monday afternoon
  • Weather delays possible for the PGA Championship

LATEST FORECAST

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Clear skies means another great night to check out the Aurora! Get away from the city and look north past sunset tonight.

It will be a cool evening with many spots in the 40s by Sunday morning.

Mother’s Day looks spectacular with full sunshine! You’ll need the jacket for an early brunch with most of us in the low 50s Sunday morning. We’ll rebound nicely to near 80 Sunday afternoon. What a perfect day to celebrate mom!

Clouds will be on the increase Sunday night ahead of our next system but we stay dry until Monday. It will be a warmer night thanks to the clouds with lows in the 50s. Showers will develop during the day on Monday, especially by the afternoon. Highs in the 70s.

Widespread rain and a few storms are expected throughout the day Tuesday. The severe weather risk is low thankfully but you’ll need the umbrella.

We’ll keep scattered storms in the forecast Wednesday before another system brings higher rain and storm chances back on Friday. This could mean delays in play at Valhalla for the PGA Championship. Next weekend looks drier with highs in the low 80s.

Another chance to see the aurora!

SATURDAY NIGHT

It will be another cool Saturday night with temps falling out of the 50s and into the 40s not long after dark. The sky will remain partially clear until after midnight. This is important because there is a chance to see the aurora once again if you’re removed from city lights!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Sunday will be cloudy one, but for most of us, it will stay dry! A brief shower or drizzle will be possible, but no soakers out there. With it being Mother’s Day, it’s not a bad idea to have a backup plan for any outdoor activities, just in case! Skies will begin to clear again in the late evening... and you know what? We have another chance, a good one at that, to see the aurora before solar geomagnetic activity begins to subside.

The warm-up returns early next week with 60s on Monday and 70s on Tuesday. This also marks when a few showers will be passing through thanks to a series of fronts approaching. The best chance for rain will be Wednesday and this one has the potential to be a soaker.

Stay with us as we continue to keep an eye on the forecast for next week!
