Treat them to Vanellope’s Sweets, a candy shop with walls of candy as far as the eye can see. Disney entertainment comes to the big stages as only this brand can, with costumed characters singing, dancing, and entertaining guests all day or evening.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

2. Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas embarks from Cape Canaveral and island hops the entire cruise, including a stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay, the Royal Caribbean’s own private island only for cruise guests.

Hit up Sugar Beach and buy some candy, ride three water slides in one on The Perfect Storm, or learn to hang ten on the FlowRider. You’ll spend the days in the most fun ways possible.

5. Mardi Gras

Carnival’s Mardi Gras is one of its latest and greatest creations, so you should expect the ultimate in entertainment.

Take a ride on the Bolt sea coaster for some exciting thrills. You can also spend a sunny day at the WaterWorks water park with a dumping bucket and countless water slides, then close out the day by seeing a show. It’s all waiting for you.

The Family Harbor Staterooms in the Family Harbor Lounge is where you need to be. Kids eat free at most restaurants in the lounge, and you can take advantage of entertainment like board games and movies. Babysitting is also available. 

6. MSC Meraviglia

Departing from Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, set sail for a world of adventure aboard the MSG Meraviglia. This ship sails to New England and Canada and delights the entire voyage.  

Stroll through the 315-foot Galleria Meraviglia promenade, shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply enjoying the beauty of it all.

Be one of the first to experience the Disney Unchartered Adventure, an immersive water experience with more than 700 feet of tubes and music, animations, special effects, and lighting. The experience ends by riding down a lazy river, so dress to get wet!

The Hero Zone is another standout the kids should love. They can compete with one another gameshow-style, play on the game floor or playground, and see who’s victorious on the sports court.

8. Carnival Panorama

Set sail to the Transpacific and Mexico on the Carnival Panorama through a Carnival Cruise Line. The 1,055-foot ship that weighs over 133,000 tons will put the whole family in a festive mood.

Laugh until you cry at The Punchliner Comedy Club, which also offers entertainment for adults.

The Carnival Panorama has plenty of Dr. Suess-themed entertainment the young ones will love, such as Dr. Suess Bookville, the Suess-a-palooza Parade, the Suess-a-palooza Story Time, and the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Zumbini is a Zumba class for kids two to five that will have their little bodies moving and grooving. There’s also a Night Owls overnight stay for the children, which is like one big sleepover!

9. Allure of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International invites families to sail away on the Allure of the Seas, an award-winning ship for family entertainment.

Included with your stay are kids and teen programs and access to the H2O Zone Water Park. The park boasts waterfalls, water cannons, pools, and sculptures the kids can climb. Geysers send water high into the sky, splashing down and refreshing your children all afternoon.

Dry off and play table tennis, ride a zipline, partake in an interactive game show, or watch an outdoor movie under the stars in the pool. The projector screen is 220 feet so there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

10. Norwegian Joy

The Norwegian Joy starts in the Mexican Riviera and wraps up its journey at the Panama Canal but alternately travels from Miami to the Caribbean. The ship is nearly 1,100 feet long and weighs more than 160,000 tons, so she’s quite heavy.

Fostering family togetherness on a ship like the Norwegian Joy is simple. You can take the twists and turns behind the wheel of the Joy Speedway, play a heart-thumping game of laser tag, or tee off at mini golf.

There’s so much more here. The Galaxy Pavilion offers a thrilling race-themed dark ride. Get your kicks at the Aqua Park, a water park for tweens and teens. The Norwegian Joy even has a Kids’ Aqua Park for the little ones.

11. Celebrity Equinox

Youngsters are a major part of cruise ship design, from play rooms and teen clubs to crew members who know how to keep young people happy. Choose your ship wisely, because newer and recently renovated ships tend to have the most exciting attractions (check out our list of best cruise ships in the world if you want to know more). Accommodations at sea can be tight, so splurge on the largest cabin or suite you can afford; there is such a thing as too much togetherness on any trip. For families, a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s massive ships —some can carry more than 6,000 passengers—is as exciting as going to an amusement park. Collectively, the ships offer ice skating rinks, simulated surfing machines, zip-lines, bumper cars, laser tag, carousels, and thrill slides. The Adventure Ocean program (for ages 3-12) includes fun science experiments, while teens get to party in their own disco. The new largest ship in the world, the 6,998-passenger Wonder of the Seas , boasts a fantastical undersea-themed Wonder Playscape, an outdoor playground with climbing walls, slides, games, and interactive features — such as a mural featuring sea creatures that come to life at the slightest touch. Disney Cruise Line

The hot ticket for Disney Cruise Line fans is the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish , which debuts on July 14 as the line’s fifth ship and first new ship in a decade. All-new features include an animated AquaMouse attraction (a wet ride on a 760-foot track), a Star Wars bar, and an Avengers-themed dining experience. On all of Disney’s ships, princesses and other characters pose for photos and star in full-scale musical productions highlighting Disney hits, like Frozen , eliciting squeals of delight. The family-centric vibe includes waitstaff who are experts in dealing with fussy eaters, and cabins with one-and-a-half bathrooms. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (for ages 3-12) are themed with such attractions as a Marvel Super Hero Academy. Teens also have dedicated spaces onboard: Vibe for teens ages 14-17 and Edge for those between the ages of 11-14. Three-night Bahamas sailings from Port Canaveral from $1,751 in winter 2023.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. Sister ship Carnival Celebration , also with a rollercoaster, debuts in November 2022. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). Family Harbor cabins and suites come with access to a private family lounge for breakfast, snacks, and video-game play. Camp Ocean entertains kids ages 2-11 with everything from crafts to dancing to video gaming, with separate clubs for tweens (ages 12-14) and teens (15-17). Norwegian Cruise Line

Three of Norwegian’s latest ships are topped with two-deck racetracks where older kids and adults can drive go-karts high above the ocean (younger kids can ride as passengers). The line’s newest ship, the 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, debuting in Europe in August, has the world’s first three-level shipboard racetrack—plus two thrilling 10-story free-fall slides at Aqua Parks. Video arcades and interactive games also appeal to the family crowd. Norwegian’s Splash Academy (for ages 5-12) youth program entertains kids with creative play and games, while teens can also enjoy the ship’s virtual gaming complex, the Galaxy Pavilion. Norwegian Prima will be cruising from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), beginning in December. Seven-night western Caribbean sailings in winter 2023 from $849.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises’ affiliation with Discovery TV makes it an excellent choice for multigenerational families—especially in Alaska. Kids in Camp Discovery (ages 3-12) may participate in science challenges tied to programs such as MythBusters and Shark Week . Wearable OceanMedallion technology lets you locate the whereabouts of teens when they are not in their own beach club, and you can all gather for a virtual scavenger hunt or watch the latest movies on a big screen under the stars. Lindblad Expeditions

For multigenerational families who prefer a nature-focused, soft-adventure experience, Lindblad partners with National Geographic for a program that has kids collecting plankton, driving inflatable Zodiacs, and otherwise earning points to become a National Geographic Global Explorer. The program is available on cruises in the Galapagos, Alaska, Baja, Mexico, and Antarctica—all places you can spot wild creatures and the kids are encouraged to record sightings in a field book. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

On the luxury side, Ritz-Carlton’s first yacht , the all-suite Evrima , launches in late August with year-round signature Ritz Kids programming. Kids ages 4-12 get a dedicated space staffed by a full-time youth counselor. The creative program features an environmental element—kids may participate an upcycle art challenge or a water-sampling science experiment. Unlike the complimentary programs on mainstream lines, this one comes with an additional charge: $45 each for three-hour morning and afternoon sessions, and $65 for early-evening programming. For our teen cruisers, the Teen Club is the place to be. At the Teen Club, they can make new friends and participate in events like video game competitions, teen parties, and culinary classes. Activities are overseen by our team of teen counselors and offered throughout the day, allowing teens to come and go as they please.

Disney Cruise Line

No one will be surprised that entertainment juggernaut Disney offers an amazing family cruise experience.

Disney Cruise Line ships are known for meet-and-greets with Mickey Mouse and Disney princesses, interactive movie-themed dining experiences and enormous kids clubs and play areas.

What might surprise the uninitiated is how good the line is at taking care of the whole family, not just the Mouse-obsessed little ones.

Disney thinks of all the little things that can help parents have a stress-free trip with kids in tow. From split bathrooms (allowing one family member to take a bath while another uses the toilet) to waiters who will cut up your child's food, Disney Cruise Line takes the pressure off parents.

While other cruise lines limit water play to kids who are toilet trained and drop-off child care to ages 3 and up, Disney caters to all kids with onboard splash areas and nurseries.

It also offers adults-only pool decks and restaurants, a nightlife scene and couples spa treatments to revive exhausted parents who haven't had a date in months.

Teens might roll their eyes at the ever-present Mickeys, but Disney Cruise Line does not ignore its older kid guests. Tweens and teens get their own cool hangouts, Edge and Vibe, with video games, foosball and hip seating areas.

Additionally, first-run movies and Broadway-caliber musicals, waterslides, teen spa treatments and grab-and-go food options (and free room service) keep older kids busy and happy.

Disney Wish and soon-to-debut Disney Treasure feature sports areas for free play and competitions attractive to this age group.

Royal Caribbean

With some of the biggest ships at sea and an amusement park-like private island in the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines for active families.

Want to try surfing, sky diving, rock climbing, laser tag, go-karts or zip lining? Families don't have to leave the ship to get their adrenaline highs.

Even the sedentary pursuits are high-octane on Royal Caribbean. Broadway musicals, festive parades, water acrobatic performances and ice skating shows wow the crowds on sea days.

Expansive play spaces for kids include separate clubs for teens and tweens, plus drop-off nurseries for babies.

Parents can sneak off to the adults-only solarium or thermal suite while the kids live it up at cruise camp.

After a hard day of play, worn-out families can refuel at a variety of restaurants, including burger and milkshake mecca Johnny Rockets, Italian and Mexican eateries and an all-day buffet.

Family cabins and connecting staterooms give larger families their needed space. The Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas can sleep eight, but parents and kids alike might be tempted to stay up late playing air hockey, scrambling up the climbing wall, soaking in the private outdoor hot tub or watching the giant TV.

When Icon of the Seas debuts in 2024, the new megaship will offer an entire section of the ship devoted to family-friendly accommodations and an outdoor dining-and-play space targeted at parents with young children.

Carnival Cruise Line

Practicalities first: Carnival Cruise Line is an affordable and convenient cruise line for families who don't live the jet-set lifestyle. With home ports all around the U.S., Carnival puts its ships within driving distance of many Americans.

A variety of short-cruise destinations, affordable-yet-spacious inside cabins (they can sleep four) and lots of onboard attractions and restaurants included in the fares combine to make it one of the best-value cruise lines afloat.

Carnival doesn't dub its fleet the Fun Ships for nothing. The whole family will have a blast on board, whether you like getting down to live music, busting a gut at family-friendly comedy shows, getting soaked at an onboard water park or eating green eggs and ham with Dr. Seuss characters.

The cruise line also embraces simple pleasures like free-flowing soft-serve ice cream and pizza and a day spent lounging by the pool.

Families don't need to pull out their wallets to feed ravenous teens or sugar-fueled children. Guy Fieri burgers and barbecue, burritos for breakfast and lunch and Shaquille O'Neal's fried chicken are all included in your cruise fares. No one's going to make you dress up for dinner, either.

Carnival ships have plenty of cabins that can sleep four or five passengers, but its newest ships truly treat families right. Book a Family Harbor cabin or suite and get access to a family lounge stocked with all the essentials — snacks and coffee, games, Wi-Fi, movies and a concierge to make bookings so mom and dad can spend more time playing with the kids.

MSC Cruises

The underdog on our list, MSC Cruises might not be a household name yet, but any cruise line that has a partnership with Lego should be on every family's radar.

As the Mediterranean line grows its U.S.-based fleet, it is staying attuned to the needs of traveling families.

Case in point: Larger family groups don't have to cram into one cabin or be scattered across the ship. Instead, they can select from a variety of connecting cabins that can accommodate up to 10 people.

Families keen on rooming together can take advantage of frequent "kids sail free" fares and pay only the taxes and fees for children under 18 who are the third and fourth passengers in a cabin.

Speaking of kids clubs, MSC's ships offer play spaces for babies, kids, tweens and teens. Its ships not only offer a drop-off Baby Club with educational toys by Chicco but also a special baby laundry service to take care of that pile of dirty onesies.

Kids club activities go beyond arts and crafts and video games to include cooking events, sports competitions and hi-tech interactive games. Teens can sing karaoke, dance at the onboard disco and attend themed parties with their new friends.

Outside of the kids club, families can race in a Formula One simulator, experience virtual reality, get soaked in a water park or brave their fear of heights on a suspension bridge.

One of the line's newest ships, MSC Seascape, features Robotron, a three-seat robotic amusement ride that's a hit with thrill-seeking families.

Norwegian Cruise Line is all about giving cruisers options to create different versions of the perfect cruise vacation, all within the same ship.

We recently sat down with the editors of our sister site, Cruise Critic , to discuss these questions and other important factors for families to consider.

Choose a Cruise That Meets Your Budget Firstly, you’ll likely want to choose Carnival , Royal Caribbean , Disney , Norwegian or Princess , as these are the most popular ships for families, according to a Family Travel Intention Survey, conducted by MMGY Global . Next, look to Carnival and Royal Caribbean for the most affordable rates overall, which regularly include packages and discounts; among them are a Kids Sail Free promotion, a growing trend in the industry. Better yet, (though not as popular for families), MSC Cruises allow kids ages 11 and under to sail free at all times; kids ages 12 to 17 sail at a reduced rate.

Recently, it also announced a new program, Camp Ocean , for the same age groups, but with a focus on marine life. For ‘tweens, ages 12 to 14, it offers Circle C, with space to hang out, play video games and listen to music. And similar to Circle C, Club O2 offers activities for teens age 15 to 17, along with teen-only shore excursions.

Together, the family can enjoy organized games, mini golf, ropes courses and swimming pools, but remember that children must be potty-trained to swim in most ships’ pools — swim diapers typically aren’t permitted.

3. Know the Limitations of Babysitting Many kids clubs offer late-night hours. For a fee, Carnival offers Camp Carnival Night Owls. Some kids clubs, such as those on Norwegian and Carnival, will also provide babysitting service when the ship docks. Aside from that, private, in-room babysitting services are hard to come by; of the most popular cruise lines, you’ll only find them on Royal Caribbean, for approximately $19 per hour for up to three children; children must be at least one year of age, and services need to be booked 24 hours in advance at Guest Relations (but cannot be reserved prior to your trip).

4. Don’t Compromise Cabin Space Sure, you can squeeze a family of four into a cabin, but realize that standard cabins are quite small and provide little space for families to spread out. Play yards and/or cribs are available on most ships, too (request in advance), but will inevitably take up the “extra” space you have. And while you’ll likely want to spend your time participating in onboard activities, don’t ignore the importance of downtime and naps. Also, because most cabins are small, they typically only offer small shower stalls, which may be an issue for families with tiny tots. Luckily, some cruise lines, such as Disney, provide small, portable bathtubs (you can usually place them in the bathroom’s sink area). For more space and guaranteed tubs, book a Family Mini-Suite on Norwegian, or a Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom on Disney, which sleeps five guests. Note that family accommodations typically sell out quickly.

5. Don’t Worry About Picky Eaters In the restaurants (most of which are complimentary; some cost an additional fee, usually per person), Princess does not provide high chairs, but Norwegian, Disney, Carnival and Royal Caribbean will provide them upon request. Princess does, however, provide both baby food and formula, as do Royal Caribbean and Disney (the latter needs to be pre-ordered); Carnival and Norwegian do not. All of the above ships provide children’s menus, with chicken fingers, pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches and the like available. Additionally, Carnival has launched a new program, Seuss at Sea , which offers a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, complete with “Moose Juice” and “Goose Juice”! Disney Cruise Line has an abundance of themed plates, as well, including Mickey Mouse-shaped pancakes. If your kids (or you) have any food allergies or other restrictions, of course, just let your waiter know, and they will do their best to accommodate you.

6. Bring Your Own Safety Features The only cruise line that provides lifeguards in swimming pools is Disney. Norwegian, on the other hand, provides intra-ship walkie talkies, and imposes a 1 a.m. curfew for anyone under the age of 17. Generally, however, onboard safety and limitations are up to parents. Many families opt to bring their own walkie talkies, along with dry erase boards, where they can leave notes to each other. Norwegian also has an app called Norwegian iConcierge, in which you can communicate with others (who also have the app) for a one-time fee. In the event of an emergency, you can also make outbound calls (for another fee).

7. Research Each Port of Call Ahead of your trip, research the safety, laws, language and currency of each port. Also know the accessibility of the area; for example, some ports only have cobblestone streets, which provide a challenge for those with strollers or wheelchairs.

8. Consider a Travel Agent To ease the cruise-planning process, don’t hesitate to hire a travel agent. A professional will particularly be of use to those traveling with other families or groups (we don’t suggest booking this online), as many people do. In fact, multigenerational cruise travel is on the rise in 2014, according to a CLIA 2014 State of the Industry Report .

9. Arrive a Day Early With kids (and even without), it’s important to arrive a day before your cruise; this prevents scrambling to get out of the airport (or park the car), get to the port, check in and go through the security. Plenty of cruise port hotels offer promotions, such as Park and Cruise Deals (for those driving) or free shuttle services to the port, too, which is another bonus to arriving a day in advance.

I went on my first cruise with 3 generations of my family, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life

• I recently went on my first cruise with my parents, sister, and grandmother. 
• I'd never been on a cruise before and was surprised that there were things for all of us to enjoy.
• We all had a good time and I'll treasure the memories we made together. 

Until last month, I had never been on a cruise. Neither had my parents or my sister, but my grandmother — my nan — often travels by cruise ship, so we decided to join her on a cruise .

We decided on a trip to the Norwegian fjords, which we all wanted to see, and traveled on the 5,206-capacity Iona — the UK's largest cruise ship until 2022.

It was the first time we'd all gone on vacation as a family of five. My 16-year-old sister, me at 25, my parents — both 50 — and my nan, who is 72 — were there.

The environment took some adjusting

The cruise took us a couple of days to get used to. The idea of being at sea felt almost claustrophobic when compared to the pedestrian-friendly city vacations I'm used to, and my nan didn't adjust to the sheer number of children (and the noise) on board at first, because she's used to going on cruises when children are at school.

But we gradually found a rhythm. My family are early risers, but I don't usually eat breakfast, so I'd wake up with them, have a coffee in bed, and then head to the gym while they went to get food. If we were spending a day in a port, we'd enjoy a few hours exploring, probably getting a coffee or some lunch, before heading back on the ship for the rest of the day.

There were plenty of places on the ship where I could spend some time by myself, too. There was an adults-only area on one of the top decks, so as we were blessed with surprisingly good weather, I'd go up there, order a beer or a cocktail, and read my book in the sun. I also enjoyed spending time in one of the quieter bars on the ship. I bought the WiFi package largely so I could keep in touch with my girlfriend and keep an eye on emails, but it also allowed me to kill some time scrolling social media or checking the soccer news.

It was good to spend more time with my family

I was a little nervous about spending so much time with my family. Apart from a short trip to Madrid with my dad last year, it was the first trip I'd taken with my parents and sister in two years, and the first with my nan since 2015.

It wasn't always easy to go without the space I'm used to — and to go longer than usual without seeing my girlfriend — but the trade-off of seeing more of my family was worth it. The trip was only for a week, and it was good to spend time with both of my parents, as well as my sister, who, at 16, is getting older and looking toward university. I liked spending more time with my nan , too, particularly now that she's in her 70s and is still in good health.

Now that we're back, I find myself missing the trip. While there are aspects of being on a cruise that I don't necessarily love — the bars and restaurants can start to feel a bit samey after a while, for example — there was a lot that I enjoyed.

The places we visited were unforgettable, too. From riding the Skylift in the village of Loen and taking in the picturesque surroundings to visiting the coolest coffee shop in Stavanger, one of Norway's biggest cities, there were some great destinations I probably would never have visited had we not decided to go for the cruise.

I always associated cruises with retired couples and families with young children, but I found plenty to do as someone in their 20s, particularly because I wanted a relaxing vacation. And being able to spend time with my family made it all the more memorable.

Even though I’ve noticed a trend in the cruise industry leaning towards more family-friendly fleets (I’m looking at you, Royal Caribbean ), a lot of us still see the perks of a kid-free vacation. And while many (if not all) cruises have dedicated spaces for adults on board, sometimes you don’t want to be pigeon-holed into one area for the entirety of your trip in order to get some peace and quiet. So, I went on the hunt to find the best cruise lines for adults, so you can relax and have fun with the 21-and-over crowd.

Oceania cruises, how i chose the best cruise lines for adults.

I’ve been on seven cruises since 2018, including Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. I have firsthand experience on each cruise line’s amenities, food, entertainment and more. I also spent time researching all the cruise lines on this list (especially the ones I’ve never been on) and did a deep dive to find out key destinations, ship information and star perks aboard their vessels. I even took it a step further and checked out reviews straight from the people—i.e., on places like Reddit, TikTok and travel blogs. 

1. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages came on the scene in 2021 and promised to create a cruise line for adults. In four years, it launched three ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady and gave guests full access to all its amenities. Per their website, the cruise line strives to let passengers try out over 20 eateries, participate in unlimited group fitness classes, enjoy free Wi-Fi and check live entertainment at an affordable price. 

Speaking of entertainment, the cruise line takes it up a notch with their theme nights like PJ Party (aka a cool pajama party) and We Fancy (dress code: elegant), along with epic dance parties like Heartbeat inspired by Brooklyn’s own House of Yes , performances like Duel Reality which tells a modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and immersive experiences to get you involved in the show. Let’s not forget other fun activities to surely make a vacation a memorable one: ala private karaoke booths, casinos and a multi-story nightclub.

Viking Cruises

If you’re searching for a cruise line for adults, Viking should be on the top of your list. The cruise line is best known for their ocean, river and expedition cruises for adults 18 and over. According to  their website , “All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise; we do not maintain facilities or services on board for younger individuals.” Since 2000, Viking has always made it their mission to target older travelers, more specifically those over 55 to join their ships, so don’t expect to see any kiddos running around.

Viking currently has over 60 ships in their fleet that travel all around the world. You can take an iconic Western Mediterranean trip (Barcelona to Rome), a Grand  European  tour (Budapest to Amsterdam) or a Great Lakes voyage (Toronto to Minnesota). While many of the ships feature pools, restaurants, a library room and theater, most travelers go for the thrilling excursions and even participate in lectures specifically found on the expedition ships (Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris) that are great for the curious scientist or animal lover.

• Popular Destinations:  Rome, Athens, Sydney, Vancouver, Shanghai
• Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, hair salon, shops, bars, spa, pools

3. Seabourn

This luxurious cruise line provides an intimate and personalized experience that will make you feel like you’re vacationing on a yacht. Per their website, their ships can carry between 264 and 600 guests at time (compared to Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas can hold over 5,000 passengers). As a result, the bookings are extremely popular and limited. (In fact, it appears that most of their summer dates are already sold out.) While the minimum age is 6 years old, the target audience is around 35 and older, according to  Travel Weekly.  So, whether you’re looking for a traditional cruise or an expedition, Seabourn offers trips all around the world for seven to 30 days at sea—which gives you ample time to enjoy a relaxing massage at their spa, try to win big at the casino or have a dip in the pool. All of their ships also include live entertainment, fine dining and an all-inclusive package.

• Minimum Age:  6+
• Popular Destinations:  Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Monte Carlo, Alaska
• Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, hair salon, shops, bars, spa, pools, casino

4. Celebrity

While Celebrity allows travelers of all ages to board their ships, travel site  Sophisticated Travel  found that most passengers are between their 40s and 50s. As  one redditor commented , “[I] have cruised Celebrity a few times. They have a few amenities for kids, so there are [a] few kids. [However] if [there] were any kids they were not really noticeable. In our experience no waterslides/waterparks equal very few kids on board.” The cruise line has been around since the ‘90s and currently has 16 ships in its fleet, traveling to port stops  like  Key West, Florida  to Athens,  Greece . The best part is you can schedule a weekend getaway or a long holiday for the entire season. 

The cruise line prides itself on its extensive food and beverage options, using world-renowned chef dishes in their specialty restaurants and a wide selection of cocktails at your disposal. Plus, fun entertainment and  nightlife events  exclusively for adults like the Undercover, which is an exhibition inspired by the 1920s, and the Jazz Joint that turns the ship’s signature club into a speakeasy. Plus, most ships feature the Solarium, a space only for adults to lounge around and explore the inside pool minus kids.

5. Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises only has six ships, but it’s been around since the early aughts. They sail around the world with destinations to New Zealand, Asia, Africa and 130 other locations. In fact, Oceania offers some of the longest stays on this list. Sure, you can cruise for a weekend or seven days, but the cruise line also offers long durations like a 200 days vacation—departing from Miami, Florida and visiting Caribbean islands (St. Maarten, Barbados) and parts of Brazil before arriving to New York. The cruise line is also known for its culinary experiences and enrichment programs. They have a dedicated library room so you can read comfortably as you sail, as well as guest lectures to learn more about the destinations you’re visiting and classes to learn how the meals are prepared. 

And if you’re wondering if the cruise line is ‘adult-enough,’  one Tripadvisor commenter  believes it a huge hit for the 50+ crowd: “I would not recommend it unless it’s a port intensive trip. There are no activities for kids. The average age on board is 60s and above. They have trivia, bingo [and] needlepoint (cooking classes and art classes are hard to get). The entertainment is usually a string quartet and maybe a magician if you’re lucky. I wouldn’t take my adult children in their 30s for fear of their boredom. I would try Disney or Celebrity.”

6. Norwegian Cruise Line

I’ve personally been on three Norwegian cruises ( twice on Prima ) and found very few children on board. While there are many thrill-seeking amenities fit for the whole family, there are plenty of ways to stray away from the younger folks. I found Norwegian Prima’s guests skew a bit older based on their upscale aesthetic around the ship that looks straight out of the MOMA museum. I appreciate Norwegian for its freestyle experience, with specialty and complimentary dining options that provide items outside of your usual pizza and hot dog joint. 

The Norwegian Prima is also home to one of largest spas I’ve ever seen at sea. There are two gigantic pools, a few sauna rooms and a large lounge area overlooking the ocean. I spent hours in there just taking in the quiet and calming ambience. Plus, the live productions of  Summer: The Donna Summer Musical  and tribute shows that honor the like of Michael Jackson or Adele are just some of the ways they cater towards millennials, Gen Xers and boomers. Most ships even have dedicated pubs and intimate bars that play classic music from the 60s to early ‘00s, too.

• Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, bars, spa, pools, activities

Best Entertainment

7. holland america line, holland america line.

A cruise line owned by Carnival (a popular family-friend cruise company), Holland America Line is possibly the oldest cruise line of the bunch. It dates back to 1873 and was used as cargo and transportation service. Today, the ships are used for leisure as they travel all around the world, docking in the likes of Hawaii and Japan. You can spend a day—or 53 days—sailing with each ship. According to  Reddit , cruisers have seen families and smaller children, but found the majority of guests were over 40. 

A standout feature of their newer ships is the entertainment on board. If you’re a music lover, ships like the Rotterdam and Koningsdam have the B.B King’s Blues Club and Rolling Stone Lounge that cater to playing the classic hits. Holland America Line also partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to provide state of the art pickleball courts with impeccable views, as well as a casino and a spa, so every guest can find an activity they can enjoy on vacation.

I recently traveled with Princess Cruises, and I highly recommend it for adults who aren’t traveling with kids in mind. As mentioned, I’ve been on seven cruises, and this by far has been the least family-friendly cruise line—in a good way! Although there were some kids and teens, the ship was made of mostly older travelers. I was actually surprised by how much it catered to adults over kids. It didn’t have many thrilling amenities like waterslides or an expansive basketball court that usually draw the younger crowds, but there were plenty of things that made the ship thrilling and exciting for mature folks.

For instance, Spellbound, an interactive cocktail experience hat features magicians, an exclusive bar and experimental dishes. There’s also Love by Britto, a dining experience which is heart-themed (down to the utensils) and sets a romantic vibe for couples. Princess Charlotte — who recently saw Taylor Swift in concert alongside her dad, Prince William, and her older brother, Prince George — is the royals’ biggest Swiftie.

“Princess Charlotte is the huge Taylor Swift fan in the family,” a source told “Entertainment Tonight” on Monday.

“She has wanted to go to the concert for months, but with her mum being treated for cancer, this was a really special day to be able to celebrate her Papa’s birthday like this.”

Charlotte, 9, and George, 10, celebrated their dad’s 42nd birthday Friday at Swift’s first Eras Tour show in London.

William’s wife, Kate Middleton — who announced in March that she was undergoing “preventative chemotherapy” for an unspecified form of cancer — was not in attendance.

Instead, she stayed home with their youngest child, Prince Louis, 6, according to “ET.”

“Charlotte absolutely loved [the concert],” the source said. “They are really wonderful children. William and Kate have done a fantastic job raising all three of them.”

After the show, the singer and her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, had a private meet-and-greet with the royals backstage.

“Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start 🇬🇧🇺🇸🤝@princeandprincessofwales,” Swift, 34, captioned a group selfie , a different angle of which the Prince and Princess of Wales captioned , “Thank you @taylorswift for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErastour.”

The source made sure to note that Charlotte and George “understand and appreciate how lucky they are meeting someone like Taylor Swift.”

Meanwhile, an insider close to William insisted he doesn’t mind that his “dad dancing” to “Shake It Off” went viral because he “is focused on his wife and children right now. He really just wanted it to be a special night for Prince George and Princess Charlotte.”

Last weekend, Middleton, also 42, attended Trooping the Colour — her first public outing since revealing her cancer diagnosis.

“I’m looking forward to attending the king’s birthday parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet,” she said in a statement ahead of the gathering.

“I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal.”

Although Middleton assured fans that she’s been “making good progress,” she explained that she still has “good days and bad days.” 

“On those bad days, you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting,” she shared. “But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

She added that “treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months.”
