Most people visiting Costa Rica want to see a sloth. These adorable creatures are native to Costa Rica but only live in certain regions. Even in those places where it is possible to see one, you may only catch a glimpse from a distance. In this post, we’ll tell you where you can get an up-close view. The Sloth Sanctuary at Selvatura Park in Monteverde has a giant enclosure with almost 20 sloths roaming around inside. Below, we’ll tell you more about visiting and what to expect.

Sloth Sanctuary Selvatura

Orientation

Selvatura Park is located just outside the town of Santa Elena in the region known as Monteverde. This area of Costa Rica is in the mountains northwest of San Jose and is best known for its vast cloud forest.

Because it is somewhat remotely located, Monteverde cannot easily be visited on a day trip from La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano or elsewhere. The town offers many activities, though, making it well worth a stop in your itinerary.

For more information about visiting, including other area activities, read our post, Monteverde: A Forest in the Clouds .

Selvatura Park

Selvatura Park has a large nature reserve with over 850 acres (344 hectares) of protected land. It borders the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and another private reserve called Children’s Eternal Rainforest.

Trail Selvatura

In addition to a hanging bridges tour through the cloud forest, Selvatura also offers zip lining and wildlife exhibits.

For wildlife exhibits, Selvatura has a butterfly garden and reptile exhibit. A couple of years ago they added the Sloth Sanctuary.

The Sloth Sanctuary Tour

Our family recently took a tour of the Sloth Sanctuary.

The tour started at the main office where we met our guide, Juan Carlos, and gave him our tickets. He led us through the forest along the concrete path that goes to the hanging bridges. In just a few minutes, we arrived at the huge enclosure for the Sloth Sanctuary.

Enclosure Sloth Sanctuary

Passing through the doors, we noticed immediately that the temperature was much warmer. For the tropics, the climate in Monteverde is fairly cool (average temperature is around 21 °C/69 °F). But inside the closed in, greenhouse-like environment, it felt much warmer.

While sloths are native to the cooler climate of Monteverde, the sloths at Selvatura’s Sloth Sanctuary had previously lived in a warmer climate. A well-known wildlife rehabilitation center on the Caribbean coast called the Jaguar Rescue Center rescued them after they were injured or held illegally as pets. Unable to be released back into the wild, Selvatura now provides them with a comfortable home to live out the rest of their lives.

Seeing the Sloths

Right away after entering the enclosure, we saw a sloth almost at eye level. It was resting on a climbing ladder near the wall. The cuddly-looking animal was in the typical sloth position with its long arms and legs reaching up onto the ladder and its body hanging below. It had long, shaggy, beige-colored fur and a dark brown face and snout.

Sloth inside the enclosure

From Juan Carlos, we learned that this was a two-toed sloth. All the sloths in the enclosure were the two-toed species because they would not get along well with Costa Rica’s other variety of sloth, the three-toed sloth. Sloths are solitary animals. They are also territorial. So the ones we were seeing were only females, which get along better than a mix of males and females.

Juan Carlos started explaining more about Selvatura’s project and how it was conservation-based. We listened and watched in awe as another sloth cruised right above our heads. This one was rather speedy, crossing the path toward the first sloth we had seen. The two animals began disagreeing a bit through grunts over who should be in that spot. Then they separated without much drama.

Ladder Sloth Sanctuary

We learned that the enclosure was designed specifically as sloth habitat in an effort to mimic their natural environment. Thick rainforest filled the space. Short shrubby bushes and flowering plants, broad-leaf banana plants, and plenty of taller trees provided opportunities to climb.

Rainforest Habitat

Although two-toed sloths are one of the slowest mammals, when they want to move, they can actually go quite fast. Our guide explained that their light weight allows them to climb with ease. We watched this with several of the animals. They seemed to enjoy going up and down the ladder-like structures or trees and then curling up when they needed a break.

The path curved through the middle of the space. It was roped off, but we were still able to see the sloths fairly close up without stressing them out. Normally sloths spend their lives high up in treetop canopy, out of sight, so it was special to be able to watch them go about their daily lives, eating, climbing, and just relaxing.

Climbing two toed sloth

Learning About the Sloths

Our group learned a lot from our guide about the fascinating life of sloths, including some things we had never heard before during our travels in Costa Rica.

We knew that sloths lived in the trees, but learned that they mate and even give birth there as well. We also found out that although very slow on land, they are quite adept at swimming. Juan Carlos was very knowledgeable about these creatures and tried to keep us engaged, although we were all clearly distracted by the interesting behaviors of the sloths right in front of us.

Tour Group

Other Sloth Exhibits in Costa Rica

Costa Rica does have other wildlife rehabilitation centers where you can see sloths up close, but Selvatura’s Sloth Sanctuary is different. It feels much more like the sloths are in the wild, since the enclosure is so large and full of greenery. At most other facilities, the animals are in much smaller spaces. It was great to see them living among so much rainforest.

In addition, the goal of the project is conservation. Some of the other sloth projects in Costa Rica seem to be driven by getting visitors and making money, rather than about the care and treatment of the animals.

Sloth Sanctuary Selvatura

Spotting a sloth in the wild is special but being able to see one close up is truly unique. We highly recommend the Sloth Sanctuary to get that close-up view of these elusive animals. If you’re traveling with kids, it’s a nice activity since you are guaranteed to see wildlife. The tour is great for those adults too who are set on seeing a sloth during their trip.

Matt & Jenn,

Most of the sloths I’ve seen in the wild have been on the Caribbean side (mostly 3-Toed) including multiple times at Hotel Banana Azul (Puerto Viejo) on their property and the beach road. Plus in nearby Cahuita is a fine Sloth Sanctuary with more than Jaguar Center had on that coast and in addition to their indoor tour of close encounters, they have a boat tour on a river behind their facility where you see sloths and other animals in the wild. Excellent! I’ve also seen the Two-toed Sloth in the wild in Tortuguero NP, Cahuita NP, and Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve. 🙂

In Central Valley I’ve seen them in the wild in Caño Negro, Braulio Carrillo NP near Tapirus Lodge, Monteverde Reserve, on Sarapiqui River, and at Chachagua Rainforest Lodge in San Ramon Canton.

On the South Pacific, my closest encounter and photos were from my room terrace at Cristal Ballena Hotel in Uvita, plus usually seen in walks through Manuel Antonio NP.

I have separate photo galleries for the 3-toed and the 2-toed at:

¡Pura vida! ~Charlie

We saw several sloths in the wild at Manuel Antonio National Park. We felt particularly lucky since one was walking on the ground and we were informed by the guide it’s pretty rare to catch that.

Hi Karen, It is rare to see them on the ground. They only come down from the tree about once a week to do their business. Lucky indeed!

Thank you! I love the sloths. My family of 3 is traveling to Monteverde in a few weeks. How far in advance would you recommend booking guided tours, etc.

Hi Eli, We’d start booking anything you know you want to do now. It can take a while to hear back from tour operators. We wouldn’t wait until you arrive since it can be stressful arranging things last minute and the good guides/companies may not be available anymore.

We stayed at La Guayaba, a very tiny (3 rooms) lodge. It was fabulous!! Here is the review I posted on Booking.com:

Where to begin?? Ernesto and wife (and Nina the cat) were amazing hosts!!! From meeting us at our car to scheduling and confirming a night hike and transportation (bus-boat-bus) to Arenal, to pleasant conversations and impeccable service, he was the best proprietor I’ve ever met! This small, quaint hotel (3 rooms), is set right on the edge of town, very easy to get around on foot. Very comfy room, bed and private bath. The landscaping is so Tico with beautiful flowers and plants. Did I mention Nina? She welcomed us from our first arrival to our last. Beautifully laid table for the cooked to order breakfast, fresh juice and great coffee were an added bonus! Would revisit!

Hi Lisa, La Guayaba looks like a great option in Monteverde. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Is it necessary to always do tours? I am a very experienced hiker and have worked as a ranger in Yellowstone and other American national parks. I’d like to do some hiking in the cloud forests on my own. Is this not allowed? All I read about is tours and guides.

Hi Sylvan, You don’t always have to do a tour but you will appreciate the ecosystem so much more with a good naturalist guide. In Monteverde, we always recommend doing one guided hike to learn more about the cloud forest. It’s harder to see wildlife there so a good guide will help you spot more and also teach you a lot.

Guide to Costa Rica's Sloth Sanctuary

Come visit!

Founders Judy Avey-Arroyo and Luis Arroyo originally purchased the 320 acre (129 hectare) lowland rainforest reserve to operate birding tours on the Estrella River. In 1991, when a devastating 7.7 earthquake completely changed the river’s course, the couple closed their bird tour business and decided to build a small hotel on the land instead. A year later, some neighborhood girls asked them to look after an orphaned baby sloth; as animal lovers , they agreed and the sanctuary was born.

Human impact.

Judy and Luis, along with what seemed like every other Costa Rican animal sanctuary, reserve, or zoo, didn’t really know how to care for a sloth. But by observing the wild population in their area and using a combination of common sense and maternal instinct, they raised Buttercup—now 24 years old and the adorable face of the Sloth Sanctuary . Unfortunately, due to deforestation, loss of habitat, power lines, dog attacks, and fast cars, the sanctuary has taken in a continuous stream of abandoned or injured sloths since 1992. The Costa Rican rainforest is disappearing at an alarming rate and with habitats being destroyed for human development, sloths are frequently left in dangerous and often life-threatening situations.

Sloths don’t belong in the concrete jungle

Welcome to the Sloth Sanctuary

Sweet faces

Buttercup Tour

The Buttercup Tour is not available on Mondays. The tour is offered every hour, on the hour, from 8am to 2pm and your ticket purchase directly aids the Sloth Sanctuary. The tour gives guests an introduction to this amazing forest creature. You will learn about sloth behavior, diet, physiology, and habitat. There is also a canoe ride, which takes you through the sloth’s natural habitat, and of course, during the hour-long tour you will encounter the sanctuary’s residents.

All grown up

Insider’s Tour

The Insider’s Tour includes the Buttercup Tour and a canoe ride, but then leads to a behind-the-scenes tour. Sloth lovers, this is the tour you must take. There are two Insider’s Tours offered a day. Following the Buttercup Tour, you will visit the clinic where injured sloths are recovering, and then see the neonatal intensive care unit where the tiniest, most adorable sloths are kept. Here baby sloths are incubated because they are so small and fragile. Following this heart-melting experience, you will see the jungle gym, where sloths have an opportunity to socialize and exercise. This four-hour tour is a sloth lover’s dream!

Cutest babies of all!

Mission statement

The tours are a great way to educate people about the sloth trials and tribulations, and how human actions are affecting them and the other animals living in habitats impacted by heavy human footprints. The tours also help to keep the sanctuary afloat, since its operating costs and essential supplies all require funding.

The true mission of the Sloth Sanctuary, however, is to rescue and rehabilitate sloths in need, study, conduct research, and understand sloth behavior; and to promote environmental conservation and awareness among the general public, especially related to sloths and the rainforest. People generally only care about things they know and love. Interacting with these incredibly cute and special animals will surely make you care about them. Spread the sloth love!

Safe and sound

Help from abroad

If you are looking for a way to help the sloths at the Sloth Sanctuary, the sanctuary has a program where you can “adopt” a rescued sloth . Your donation of US$80 (UK£63), which can be paid all at once or in installments, will directly benefit the nutrition, wellness, care, and research of not just one, but all the sanctuary’s sloths. You will receive a personalized adoption certificate, a plush sloth toy, four new sloth rescue stories, and a collectable photo magnet. There is also the Earth Day project , which aims to reforest the area. For US$140 (UK£109), an almond tree—the sloths favorite food—will be planted in your honor, and you’ll be able to personalize a plaque to place upon it.

I spent a day at a Costa Rican sloth sanctuary, and it was one of the most magical moments of my life

  • If you are ever in Costa Rica, you cannot leave without visiting the country's only Sloth Sanctuary.
  • The Sanctuary takes in abandoned and physically disabled sloths, rescuing the animals and giving them a new chance at life.
  • The Sanctuary offers guided tours and the opportunity to learn about the two and three-fingered sloths who reside in the beautiful oasis.

Insider Today

No trip to Costa Rica is complete without a visit to the country's only Sloth Sanctuary , a place where abandoned baby sloths and those with physical disabilities are rescued, rehabilitated, and given another chance to thrive.

In other words, it's a place where dreams come true.

Here's what it's like hanging out with the sloths:

Costa Rica is famous for lots of things. Zip-lines. Coffee. Environmental tourism. I was going for the sloths. I wanted to spend a day with my spirit animal, which is known for moving so slowly that it looks like it was recorded in slow motion.

visit a sloth sanctuary

So naturally I carved out a full 24 hours to spend in the country's only sloth sanctuary (formerly known as the Aviarios del Caribe). If you're starting in the capital city of San Jose, getting to the sanctuary, on the country's east coast near Limon, is a bit of a trek.

visit a sloth sanctuary

Lucky for me, I'd been traveling up and down the country's coast for a few days by the time I planned to stop by the sanctuary. From my Airbnb, in the neighborhood of Cahuita, all I had to do was walk to the local bus depot.

visit a sloth sanctuary

At first, when the driver told me we'd arrived, in Spanish, I wasn't sure I'd heard him correctly. There were very few signs — just a typical-looking bus stop and a whole lot of trees. Then, I saw this:

visit a sloth sanctuary

Sure enough, after crossing the street (carefully, as instructed), I ventured along a small pathway, which brought me to this:

visit a sloth sanctuary

Inside the gates, the pathway widened into a large driveway, where I was greeted by this giant stone fellow. Don't worry, this creature isn't a sloth. It's a sloth ancestor — an elephant-sized ground sloth belonging to a genus 'Megatherium americanum.' The last of these creatures died out 11,000 years ago.

I'd signed up for the Buttercup Tour, named after its very first resident, Buttercup, which the sanctuary acquired in 1992. Back then, the story goes, a young girl saw a car hit and kill a sloth, and the baby was left to fend for itself.

visit a sloth sanctuary

Source: BBC Wildlife, 2011

The girl brought the baby sloth to her neighbors, Judy Avey-Arroyo and Luis Arroyo. "We were the crazy gringos across the street," Avey-Arroyo, who grew up in Alaska, told the BBC. Buttercup still lives at the sanctuary. Here she is:

visit a sloth sanctuary

Although Buttercup spends a lot of time in the company of humans, the area surrounding her home is rich with wildlife. A small river runs through the grounds. The moist air is full of the sounds of birds, insects, monkeys, and other sloths of course. (By the way, they don't sound anything like you'd probably expect. The babies squeak; the adults utter a high-pitched call that echoes eerily through the trees.)

visit a sloth sanctuary

Many of the sanctuary's sloths are too young or too ill to be released back into the wild after they're rehabilitated, so they stay in habitats like the one below. Here's Millie, a Hoffman's two-fingered sloth:

visit a sloth sanctuary

Mille and Buttercup belong to two different sloth genera, the scientific classification above species. Millie is a two-fingered sloth of the genus Choloepus. Buttercup is a three-fingered sloth of the genus Bradypus. The genera in bold below are the only ones still alive today (the rest were wiped out by extinctions):

visit a sloth sanctuary

In English, these two different groups are often referred to as "two-toed" or "three-toed," but in Spanish, they're called "two-fingered" or "three-fingered."

visit a sloth sanctuary

Some people think the Spanish phrasing is more accurate since it refers to the number of digits on the animals' fore feet (which, for humans, more closely resemble our hands) instead of their hind feet (which are more like our feet). Here's a photo of me meeting the three-fingered sloth Duggar:

visit a sloth sanctuary

Duggar is a specific kind of three-toed sloth known as a brown-throated three-fingered sloth, or 'Bradypus variegatus.' His species is the most common sloth species and thrives in Central and South America. Brown-throated three-fingered sloths can be identified by the brightly colored patterns on their backs.

Other sloths at the sanctuary who are younger or weaker get special attention. If they aren't ready for the independence of the habitats like the ones Duggar and Millie live in, they sleep here, in warm nests of blankets, until they're stronger and healthier:

One of the sanctuary's residents, Toyota, was brought to the sanctuary after being badly burned while climbing an electric wire (a frequent source of injury for sloths in Costa Rica). Although he lost the forearm, which suffered the brunt of the injury, Toyota was nursed back to health, and now hangs out in one of the sloth habitats near Millie.

Lunchtime rolled around as we were finishing our tour. Here's Millie enjoying a meal of tree leaves, which make up the majority of her diet. Like other Hoffman's two-fingered sloths, she also noshes on the occasional fruit or flower.

Soon, it was time for us to go. As we said our goodbyes, Millie kept chewing.

Selvatura Sloth Habitat

In close collaboration with the Caribbean Sloth Sanctuary, Selvatura Park showcases the sloth, one of Costa Rica´s most iconic animals in a carefully designed exhibit that replicates their natural habitat and that is home to 20 sleepy, slow-moving, tree-dwelling individuals.

This is the sanctuary where time takes on a new meaning and invites quiet contemplation of these extraordinary mammals.

Enjoy a guided tour of the exhibit to learn about this emblematic species, its habits, and why it doesn´t go anywhere very quickly.  Observe these sloths from a stressless distance as they roam among the trees and foliage of the exhibition with freedom and in safety.  Not only will you fall in love with our sloths, but the sanctuary is also a way that Selvatura Park supports education and promotes environmental conservation.

These beautiful mammals arrived at our sanctuary having been rescued from the effects of poaching, habitat destruction, illness, and accidents among other reasons that now prevent them from being reintroduced to their natural habitat.  For this reason, the Selvatura Sloth Habitat is very dear to our hearts and part of our ongoing mission to protect and preserve this recently-named national symbol.

Want to see a sloth? Come to Costa Rica!

Where to see sloths around la fortuna and monteverde, where to see sloths in the caribbean region, where to see sloths along the central pacific coast, where to see sloths on the osa peninsula, where to see sloths around the central valley and central highlands, where to see sloths in guanacaste / along the northern pacific coast, map of the best places to see sloths in costa rica, how to see sloths in costa rica, when to see sloths in costa rica, photo gallery.

Few wildlife species evoke the same swoon-like reaction from travelers, especially young travelers, as sloths. Though strange-looking, the sloths in Costa Rica are easy to love : they snuggle up to trees, they look darn cute when they eat, and, as evidenced by the photo of the three-toed sloth above who surprised us in our backyard one day, they know how to smile for a camera.

If you’re dying to see a sloth in real life, perhaps even up close, come to Costa Rica. Sloth sightings are common here; you just need to know how, when, and where to look for them. We can help. Continue reading below to discover where you should go to see a sloth in Costa Rica, how you can increase your chances of seeing a sloth in Costa Rica, and when you should travel to Costa Rica if seeing a sloth is at the top of your bucket list.

Where to see sloths in Costa Rica

If you dream of seeing a sloth in Costa Rica, you’re in luck. Sloths reside all over the country; you don’t need to travel to a specific region to spot one.

This being said, there are areas of Costa Rica that have higher concentrations of sloths, including the Caribbean region, the central Pacific region, and the Osa Peninsula. If you travel to one of these areas, you’ll have a greater chance of seeing a sloth in the wild.

Though less authentic, a surefire way to see sloths in Costa Rica is to visit a wildlife rescue center. Wildlife rescue centers work to rehabilitate Costa Rican wildlife and return ill or injured species to the wild when it’s safe to do so. Some wildlife rescue centers in Costa Rica have areas devoted to sloths; they’re sometimes called sloth sanctuaries .

Below is a compiled list of sites and attractions (namely Costa Rican national parks, reserves, and refuges or wildlife rescue centers), organized by region, where sloth sightings are common. To increase your chances of seeing a sloth in any of the national parks, reserves, or refuges listed below, we recommend touring the place with a trained guide (to learn more about guided tours, don’t miss our related blog post: Costa Rica Guided Tours: Are They Necessary, Valuable, And/Or Worthwhile? ). With respect to wildlife rescue centers, you’re welcome to visit any of the centers listed below (an advance reservation is typically required) to learn more about the sloths and the work that goes into caring for the species.

National parks, reserves, and refuges

  • Arenal Volcano National Park : This national park, at the base of the Arenal Volcano, is located less than a half-hour drive from downtown La Fortuna. To learn more about the Arenal Volcano National Park, please see our related blog post Why You Should (And Shouldn’t) Visit The Arenal Volcano National Park .

Wildlife rescue centers

  • Proyecto Asis Wildlife and Sloth Rescue Center: This rescue center, about a half-hour drive outside of La Fortuna, runs sloth sanctuary tours through an area that’s only for sloths. It also offers volunteering opportunities.
  • Selvatura Park’s Sloth Habitat : This popular attraction, only a 15-minute drive outside of Santa Elena (downtown Monteverde), runs sloth sanctuary tours through an area that’s only for sloths. To learn more about the Selvatura Park’s Sloth Habitat, please see our related blog post Selvatura Park Monteverde: Zip-lining, Hanging Bridges, A Sloth Habitat, a Butterfly Garden, and a Herpetarium In The Cloud Forest .
  • The Springs Resort & Spa’s Wildlife Sanctuary : This popular attraction, roughly 20 minutes from downtown La Fortuna, has several wildlife exhibits that will pique your interest in addition to hot springs and on-site adventure tours. To learn more about the Springs Resort’s Wildlife Sanctuary, please see our related blog post Club Rio Costa Rica Outdoor Center Review (Springs Resort) .
  • Cahuita National Park : This national park, on the east side of the town of Cahuita, is easy to stroll through and parallels the beach much of the way.
  • Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge : This national wildlife refuge sits on the east side of the town of Manzanillo, near the border shared with Panama.
  • Sarapiqui : The Caribbean region’s inland destination, Sarapiqui, also produces sloth sightings, mainly along the banks of the Sarapiqui River and at area reserves including the Tirimbina Biological Reserve .
  • Jaguar Rescue Center : This popular rescue center, which sits between Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and Punta Uva, has several wildlife exhibits you can tour during public hours.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park : This popular national park, at the southernmost end of Manuel Antonio, is blessed with beautiful beaches and an abundance of sloths. To learn more about the Manuel Antonio National Park, please see our related blog post How The Manuel Antonio National Park Is Different Than Other Costa Rica National Parks .
  • Carara National Park : This national park, adored by bird-watchers and an easy half-hour drive from Jaco, also delivers sloth sightings along its trails, one of which is wheelchair-accessible.
  • Corcovado National Park : Nestled between Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez, this popular national park, oftentimes coined Costa Rica’s crown jewel, is full of wildlife and wild jungle landscape.
  • Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center (formerly Rescate Animal ZooAve): This rescue center, just outside of Alajuela (a short drive from the SJO airport), has flat accessible trails and large fenced enclosures. To learn more about the Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center, please see our related blog post Visiting The Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center (ZooAve)—Photos And Brief (5-Minute Read): Alajuela, Costa Rica .
  • La Paz Waterfall Gardens : This popular attraction, which sits a one-hour drive north of Alajuela and the SJO airport, has several wildlife exhibits you can wander around in addition to five natural waterfalls.
  • Refugio Animal Costa Rica (formerly Refugio Herpetologico): Just up the road from the town of Santa Ana center is this small and humble rescue center.
  • Turrialba : 60 kilometers east of the capital (San Jose), sloths are commonly spotted on the outskirts of the city of Turrialba, mainly along the banks of the Pacuare River and at area attractions including the Guayabo National Monument .
  • Diamante Eco Adventure Park : This popular rescue center overlooking Playa Matapalo (roughly a half-hour drive from Playas del Coco), has several wildlife exhibits you can wander around when you aren’t participating in on-site adventure tours.

The map below shows where each site described above is located in Costa Rica.

Seeing sloths in Costa Rica is easy… if you know where to look. The trick is to look up, way up, among the treetops. Sloths are arboreal creatures (they live most of their life in trees), typically only touching the forest floor once a week when they descend from their lofty home to poop. Unless you catch a sloth in this act, you’re most likely to spot him or her around the top of a tree, if not shimmying up or down one.

Find cecropia trees

Sloths inhabit a variety of trees, so it’s possible to see them just about anywhere in the rainforest. Before you go and kink your neck from hiking with your head cocked back though, know this: sloths prefer cecropia trees. Teach yourself how to identify a cecropia tree and you’ll have a better chance of finding a sloth.

Cecropia trees are typically tall and have a thin, white trunk; long, slender, yellowish fruit that resembles string beans; and large, light-to-medium green leaves that fan out from the tree. Sometimes called “trumpet trees” in English, you may also hear cecropias referred to as guarumos by Costa Ricans who joke that the trees’ resident sloths are slow-moving as a result of guaro (sugarcane liquor) and humo (smoke). Here are some photos of cecropia trees to help you identify their bark and leaves from different distances and angles:

Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park

Explore with a guide

Because sloths live somewhat predictable lives—eating, sleeping, resting, and mating among the treetops, and only occasionally visiting the forest floor—oftentimes locals know exactly where to find them . In particular, tour guides, who sometimes traverse the same nature trails several times each day or week, are partial to this information. Choose to tour a national park, biological reserve, or wildlife refuge alongside a knowledgeable tour guide and he or she may lead you directly to a sloth. For more information about guided tours in Costa Rica, don’t miss our related blog post:  Costa Rica Guided Tours: Are They Necessary, Valuable, And/Or Worthwhile?

Know what you’re looking for

Regardless of whether you opt to tour Costa Rica with a guide or not, it’s important you know what to look for. Adult sloths range in size but typically average around two feet in length , excluding their long arm span and “fingers” which resemble claws. Their fur is greyish-brown and coarse-looking , and their face may have a pig-like nose, if they’re a two-toed sloth , or dark markings around the eyes like a raccoon, if they’re a three-toed sloth . Both varieties are usually seen lying across tree branches, hanging from tree branches, or curled up in a ball , typically in the crook of a tree.

Keep your eyes on the water

Did you know that sloths can swim ? It’s tough to see sloths in Costa Rica taking a dip, but that does happen. Though you likely won’t spot a sloth playing in the waves that roll into Costa Rica’s two coasts, you could see one wading in calmer waters, including slow-moving rivers and canals , so keep an eye out around these ecosystems too.

Fortunately, sloths can be seen year-round in Costa Rica , so feel free to visit at any time. This being said, your sloth-viewing experience in Costa Rica will be determined in part by Costa Rica’s weather and tourist seasons . For example, if you decide to search for sloths in Costa Rica during the dry/summer/high season, it’s less likely that you’ll be bothered by rain, which may translate to a more enjoyable spotting experience. This being said, fewer travelers descend upon Costa Rica during the wet/green/winter/low season and wildlife-spotting opportunities tend to be optimal when fewer people are around; traveling during this period may produce more sloth sightings. For more information about Costa Rica’s various seasons, including the pros and cons of visiting during each, don’t miss our related blog post: When To Go To Costa Rica According To Cost, Weather, Wildlife And More!

Smitten with sloths, an adoring international public may not realize the species they most often see has a diminutive relative living on a tiny island north of Panama’s mainland, the only place the pygmy three-toed sloth is known to exist on Earth. This small sloth – a resident of red mangroves and other plants on Isla Escudo de Veraguas -- shares the serene expression, unhurried movements, and many of the same threats to its existence as its larger relatives, which is why the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to list it as threatened under the Endangered Species Act with a special rule allowing exceptions for certain otherwise prohibited activities.

Weighing in at 6-plus pounds and sporting a black and white face on a tan body, the pygmy sloth is most closely related to the brown-throated three-toed sloth, its more visible mainland relative.  Although it was described as a full species in 2001, little is known about the pygmy sloth’s life history and habitat requirements. Pygmy sloths are known to eat red mangroves and 14 other plant species on Escudo.

The primary threats to the pygmy sloth are increased development and tourism. Although there is minimal to no current trade of the pygmy sloth, the species is listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Appendix II. Adding an ESA violation on top of a CITES violation could act as an additional disincentive for any illegal trade of the species.

Other threats to the pygmy sloth include the small size of Escudo and the species’ population and direct and indirect impacts of tourism, habitat loss from small-scale timber harvest, and habitat loss from sea level rise and erosion. These threats make the sloth vulnerable to random environmental catastrophes, such as storms. The pygmy sloth is currently considered resilient, but tourism and development are expected to increase on and around Escudo.

The Pygmy Sloth Conservation Project uses innovative and integrative activities to support pygmy sloth and Escudo conservation. The project includes repeated population surveys, education of Indigenous communities and schoolchildren regarding Escudo ecology and the benefits of conservation, and cooperation with the Indigenous government and local fishermen’s association to develop a community-based natural resources management program. But while Escudo is designated as a protected area, enforcement and regulatory capacity to the island are inadequate due to limited resources and the remoteness of the area.

You can make a difference in the pygmy sloth’s future by providing information and comments on the Service’s proposal to list the species under the Endangered Species Act. Moscow is the largest city in Europe. It is different from anything you might have seen in other European capitals. Having very little interaction with the rest of Europe for centuries, Russians developed their own style in architecture and life in general. It is always an exciting place to be; at the same time the city is clean, well-kempt and safe. The most popular time to go for vacation in Moscow is from May to the middle of October; though coming for New Year can also be a special experience. The Russian capital has a lot to offer to a tourist going for vacation Moscow. The main Moscow places to visit – the Kremlin and Red Square - are in the historical center. Besides those there are many others spots for Moscow sightseeing which are spread out all over the city.

“ While in Cocles, we chose to visit the Sloth Sanctuary. The tour began with a one hour canoe ride that should be optional as it was very hot and few animals, birds, etc. were out for viewing. The tour itself led by Marcos was very informative and the sloths seemed to be receiving wonderful care. Two and three fingered sloths of all ages were on exhibit.” WTPNorfolk via Tripadvisor.com “ In Costa Rica, we took the Animal Planet recommended tour of the sloth sanctuary. It did not disappoint. The bus ride was not long and we got to see the animals right away. The tour was given in rooms where the sloths were. The guides were informative and passionate about their work. The boat ride in the canal behind the sanctuary was not explained so we just got in the small aluminum boat and paddled away. Our boatman did not speak English so we just drifted along in silence until we encountered wildlife. Fortunately I speak enough Spanish to translate for the others. He pointed out iguanas and then we arrived where the howler monkeys lived. He positioned our boat where we could watch them for a substantial time. We also saw sloths in the wild. It was a great look at the rainforest. Our regular tour guide taught us a great deal about his country and also showed us how banana plantations worked which was a bonus. I found the craft market at the dock the best opportunity for shopping on the trip with genuine crafts, nice vendors and reasonable prices.” lwall8 via cruisecritic.com “ Very hot day so be sure to bring water. We visited the nursery, the adults, did a canoe ride and a jungle walk and … the gift shop. Very strange animals, but completely docile and adorable. We got to see exotic birds as well as frogs.” shamrockace via cruisecritic.com “ The sloth sanctuary was the highlight of the tour. The first stops, at the fruit stand and banana plantation, were boring … But the sloths and the volunteers at the sanctuary were just amazing!” Podie via cruisecritic.com “ We visited the sloth sanctuary where we took a boat ride on a river looking for wildlife. We then got to see the sloths up close and personal, including the babies that were rescued from the jungle when their mothers could not take care of them.” tricia1234 via cruisecritic.com

Our tours regularly receive high ratings through Princess Cruise Lines’ passenger surveys.

A trip to Moscow

I'm going to organize a trip this summer. I want to plan everything. I’ll fly from London to Moscow, and I also want to visit St. Petersburg. Could you, please, advise me what places I should visit? I’ll stay in Moscow for about 10 days before going to St. Petersburg. Thank you!

Not a country I’d be spending my money in at the moment.

Ditto. Ditto!

I don't really see the point of shunning a country because you don't agree with its leader and/or its government. Would you go to Italy? China? Tourist dollars are more likely to get into the hands of the people rather than any corrupt bureaucracy and meeting friendly tourists might just change the locals opinions of foreigners and even give them some information they don't get from local news media.

Hopefully , I won't be starting a war here , but I must say I agree with Chani's comments . Having taken three year visas in 2015 , we have been to Moscow and St; Petersburg ( once to Moscow , and twice to St Petersburg ) . The History , Art , Music ( I am a classically trained musician ) and Culture , fascinate us . Much to experience there and advance preparation is essential , To get a good grounding for your visit , read this lavish and detailed book by Suzanne Massie , it's one of the best ways to immerse yourself in what you will experience - https://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-Beauty-Old-Russia/dp/096441841X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521652009&sr=8-1&keywords=land+of+the+firebird+massie&dpID=51CPK13XKGL&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

And while leaders of such countries can point to foreign visitor numbers as a sign of support ? I also believe that personal safety for certain travellers, especially obvious minorities, cannot be guaranteed, as fervent nationalism increases, and tolerance levels evaporate. Just as I may decide against a purchase at the supermarket because of a company’s behaviour, ethics will always be a consideration.

Well, I'd argue supermarket ethics does not readily translate to travel ethics - the latter is far more complex. Personally, I see the whole "vote with my hard-earned travel dollar" approach as overly simplistic, but if it's your position - I totally respect it.

What I don't understand is members volunteering ethical guidance in response to what seems an innocuous request for travel-related information.

Note a discussion on ethics hosted a year ago by the Webmaster of this very forum.

I appreciate Rick Steves' point of view in his "Travel As A Political Act". That said, Putin's Russia is not a place I would support. But, to each his or her own....

From a practical point of view, travel between the two countries can be difficult. I understand the Russians who traveled in the US this past winter had to go to the US Embassy in the country of Georgia to get visas because the Russians expelled American embassy personnel. If you do travel to Russia, you may be on your own. See the American travel advisory: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/russia-travel-advisory.html

Travel Advisory January 10, 2018 Russia – Level 3: Reconsider travel Reconsider travel to Russia due to terrorism and harassment. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory U.S. citizens are often victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion by law-enforcement and other officials. U.S. consular assistance to detained individuals is often unreasonably delayed by Russian officials. Russia also enforces special restrictions on dual U.S.-Russian nationals. Due to the Russian government-imposed reduction on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, the U.S. government has reduced ability to provide services to U.S. citizens.

We have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg over the past few years. As in the US, most of the people we encountered helpful and not particularly political. In Moscow, we stayed at The Garden Ring Hotel which was a close walk to the metro. The hotel was very comfortable and quiet for being in the city. We loved the art museums and the Georgian restaurants. In St. Petersburg, we stayed at both The 3Mosta hotel near the Hermitage and the Art Hotel Demetra.. In St. Petersburg, we especially liked the Hermitage and Russian museum. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet and having a good map is a must.

As I think the point about ethical considerations has been made, please keep future replies more specific to the question at hand. Thanks.

Either read a good travel book or book a guide who can personally take you to the best places that interest you and tell about the sights you're seeing. We used Dan Petrov on 2 different trips to Moscow and found him to be wonderfully friendly and witty not to mention super knowledgeable.

Latest advice, Australian Governmemt, 1 April 2018. “Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”

We very much enjoyed our group trip to Moscow and St Petersburg last year. excellent guides and accommodations. While Steven who has replied here has excellent advice, ( and we took advantage of it), we felt an organized tour really facilitated our enjoyment of the country. You may want to consider a combination of an organized tour and than adding independent days . Some of the Australians on the tour had arrived a couple of days earlier than the tour stated and then some stayed later. If we were to go again (which I would), that"s how I would do it. And I must say , it was enlightening to have conversations with the Russian tour guides and the non Americans about the current world situation. Not that we went into any great depth, but I think we all went away with a little more understanding. Top places: allow lots of time in St Petersburg at the Hermitage- take a separate day for the Impressionist building. In Moscow, the Russian Art Museum was amazing.

Solid advice from Australian government quoted above, especially the keeping up to date part.

I checked the current version (Sep 18) of that advisory - and it hasn't been updated much. In fact, some sections don't seem to have changed since 2005 - their recommendations for importing/exporting currency and financial instruments, for example, are at least five years behind.

I do like reading governmental travel advisories for entertainment purposes - for instance, up until very recently the US one sternly advised potential travelers that Moscow was largely a cash-based economy (couldn't be further from the truth) and warned about intrinsic dangers of gypsy cabs (which had all but disappeared by 2015).

The History of the World: Nixon visits Moscow

The history of the world: sixth edition.

  • May 22 nd 2013
22 May 1972 The following is a brief extract from The History of the World: Sixth Edition by J.M. Roberts and O.A. Westad.

In October 1971 the UN General Assembly had recognized the People’s Republic as the only legitimate representative of China in the United Nations, and expelled the representative of Taiwan. This was not an outcome the United States had anticipated until the crucial vote was taken. The following February, there took place a visit by Nixon to China that was the first visit ever made by an American president to mainland Asia, and one he described as an attempt to bridge ‘sixteen thousand miles and twenty-two years of hostility.’

When Nixon followed his Chinese trip by becoming also the first American president to visit Moscow (in May 1972), and this was followed by an interim agreement on arms limitation – the first of its kind – it seemed that another important change had come about. The stark, polarized simplicities of the Cold War were blurring, however doubtful the future might be.
