During our orca tour in Vancouver , we learned a lot about these majestic creatures. For example, killer whales aren’t actually whales, but they’re relatives of the dolphin family. We also learned that the Vancouver waters are home to resident orcas, which feed mostly on salmon, and transient orcas, which eat small mammals. These cetaceans can weigh up to five tons and swim over 60 miles per day!

Humpback whales in Vancouver

During your sightseeing tour, you may also see humpback whales in Vancouver . These whales spend more time underwater than killer whales, so it’s more difficult to predict their location. They’re also much larger, so seeing one in the icy northern waters is quite an experience!

Grey whales

Minke whales

These creatures prefer deep waters, but since the Georgia Strait has an average depth of 500 feet, it’s possible to see them during a Vancouver Island whale-watching tour . These porpoises are fast, reaching speeds up to 34 mph, which is good since they’re prey to transient orcas.

California sea lions

As the name suggests, California sea lions populate the California coast. However, the males are commonly found around Vancouver Island between September and May before returning south. You can recognize them by their dark brown color and domed foreheads.

Harbor and elephant seals

Harbor seals are the primary prey for transient killer whales, so you’ll probably see some during your Vancouver orca tour . While these seals look lazy when they’re lounging on the coastal rocks, they are extremely agile in the water!

As for elephant seals , they’re larger and have elongated noses that resemble the trunk of an elephant. These seals spend most of their time in the water, and they’re not nearly as prevalent in western Canada as harbor seals.

Steller sea lions

Our first time taking a Vancouver Island whale-watching tour was an experience I’ll never forget. We left Vancouver City in the late morning on a double-decker boat . While there was a covered lower deck, we stayed on the upper level, where we had 360° views of the sea.

It was mid-May, so it didn’t take long for us to spot our first killer whale in the wild. As we moved to deeper waters, we saw more transient orcas, including a male, a mother, and her calf. In total, we spotted seven transient killer whales, and seeing that little orca poke her head out of the water was the highlight of the tour.

Our orca-watching tour in Vancouver review

During our Vancouver whale trip , we also saw humpback whales, sea lions, and bald eagles. Our guide was excellent and even mapped out our route, marking down where we saw the different species. I also appreciated that the boat followed the whales at a legal and safe distance to avoid disturbing them.

Seeing wild whales in Vancouver was a literal dream come true for me. It’s hard to put into words the euphoric feeling of seeing these majestic giants cutting through the waves, some just a few feet from our boat. I felt a rush every time I saw a dorsal fin or a jet of water vapor rising to the surface!

Hi! I am traveling solo in mid-September from California. I arrive Sunday evening in Vancouver and leave Wednesday afternoon. I am trying to figure out what would be the best itinerary for the 3 nights…my #1 goal is to see whales! Should I stay in and sightsee in Vancouver and get a boat from there or just head into Victoria (or somewhere else on the island) as the home base. The zodiac boats sound incredible…any advice/guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

This greatly increases our chances of finding whales on every tour. Our success rate is typically around 95% - however, please note that these are untrained and unpredictable whales. Their 'wildness' is what makes our tours special, but on rare occasions it means that we may be unsuccessful in locating any. If this is the case on your tour, you will be given a voucher to come back again, free of charge! Your free trip never expires and is non-transferable. Please ensure you prepare for all types of weather! Depending on the whales whereabouts, tours can cover a large geographic area. The predicted Vancouver forecast is not necessarily what you can expect when you're out on the water and away from the city. Weather conditions can be extremely variable and we strongly suggest you bring layered clothing, as most often it is cooler on the water than you'd expect.

Sea conditions are variable, and the ride can be bumpy at times. We therefore suggest you wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes. Guests on our open air vessels (or the outdoor seats on the semi-covered vessel), may experience sea spray depending on the wind conditions on the day of your tour. Please prepare for the possibility of getting splashed!

You may want to consider packing:

• A reusable water bottle
• A camera with a fully charged battery and lots of memory storage
• A light snack or packed lunch. If you do not have the means to prepare your own lunch, you can purchase food to-go at the Granville Island Public Market or a bakery down the road (open early in the morning for our earliest summer sailings).
• Gloves and a warm hat for cooler days (toques are available for purchase in our office)
• Your sense of adventure!
• Cash for an optional gratuity, if you feel so inspired! Tips can also be left by card in our office.

Getting Here

Before boarding, we ask all guests to check-in at our office. From there we will provide directions for boarding your boat. We are located on Granville Island which is approximately 10 minutes from most downtown hotels by car.

There are many options for transportation to our office and departure point:

• By Bus: From downtown, you can catch the #50 bus (False Creek South) along Granville Street starting at Waterfront Station. Disembark the bus on West 2nd Avenue at Anderson St and walk onto the island. If you would like more information on bus routes and schedules from alternative departure points, please visit the Translink website and use their trip planner.
• By Ferry : The Aquabus or the False Creek Ferries can be boarded from 4 locations downtown Vancouver in addition to stops at Olympic Village, Kitsilano point, or 2 stops in the Fairvew area. For an up-to-date schedule of ferry departures and routes, please visit the Aquabus or the False Creek Ferries online.
• By Car: You can drive directly on to Granville Island and there is usually ample parking available in the morning. Parking can be competitive later in the day, starting around 11am. You must pay for parking between the hours of 11am - 6pm. For more information about parking on Granville Island, click here
• By Taxi: Trips from downtown to Granville Island will likely be around $10 - $15 for up to four people. Call Black Top Cabs Yellow Cabs , or Maclure’s Cabs for enquiries about larger groups. Traffic on Granville Island is one-way and can move slowly. You may want to ask to be dropped off at the entrance to Granville island.

If you’re coming from Vancouver, you can fly over for the day, or fly and stay! Choose from a same day return flight back to Vancouver, or an overnight stay in one of Victoria’s beautiful hotels or Bed and Breakfast accommodations. Flying time is thirty-five minutes from Downtown Vancouver to Downtown Victoria, and flights depart from Vancouver every 20 minutes.

Choose a morning or afternoon three-hour Whale Watching Tour onboard a covered vessel or open-air zodiac. Our Naturalists guide your journey along the Salish Sea, introducing you to wonders of the deep!

How old do you have to be to go on a tour?

Our covered vessel tours welcome people of all ages, but the zodiacs are restricted to those that are 6 years old and above.

Can you pick me up from my hotel?

Yes! Orca Spirit Adventures offers a courtesy shuttle service for all guests. We’ll pick you up at your downtown Victoria hotel—and when your whale watching adventure is over, we’ll drop you back at the hotel, or if you prefer, anywhere in the Victoria city core.

How far in advance of my tour does the shuttle arrive?

The day before your tour we prepare our shuttle schedule and will contact you directly to provide you with a time frame in which the shuttle will get you from your hotel. Pickups are anywhere from and hour and half to thirty minutes before the schedule tour departure time depending on the hotel location.

Is there parking near the departure dock?

Wharf Street Departures Yes, there are pay parking lots at this office as well as street parking.

Coast Hotel & Marina by APA Departures There is a parking lot at the corner of the Quebec Street and Montreal Street about a half block from our office. As well, there is another lot at the corner of Kingston Street and Menzie Street.

What is the boat ride like?

Exciting and sometimes quite adventurous. Depending on the weather and conditions on the water, the experience can be wild and wet, smooth and dry, or any combination of the two. A typical zodiac trip experiences more ocean spray, and passengers can be splashed at some point along the route. Morning tours and those on covered vessels are usually the calmest.

What is the best time of year to see whales

While it is possible to see whales at any time of the year, there is a peak season from May through October. During this peak season our sighting success rate is at 95-98% for viewing whales near Victoria. In addition to whales, see the other wildlife that we view in the Victoria area .

Will we really see whales?

Southern Vancouver Island is the best place to see whales in the wild! There is a chance of seeing a number of different species of whales including transient orcas, humpback whales, Minke whales, and gray whales in addition to other wildlife including but not limited to seals, sea lions, bald eagles, cormorants, and the Race Rocks Lighthouse resident sea otter – Ollie! All of this being said, these are wild animals that we are viewing and so there is the chance of them being a little more elusive some days, which is why we offer our Whale Guarantee. In the event of a no-whale trip, you are invited back with us for a complimentary tour. No rush, this is a life-time guarantee as we want to bring all of our guests’ whale watching dreams to life.

Where do I board the boat?

• Depending on which tour you’re on, boarding will take place at one of our two locations. You’ll be notified in advance of the departure location at either:
• Our private dock, approximately 70 yards from the Orca Spirit Adventures office in the Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina by APA, at 146 Kingston Street in Victoria, BC
• At the Harbour Air Seaplane terminal at 950 Wharf Street in Victoria, BC
• Wild Renfrew Guest Services at 17310 Parkinson Road, Port Renfrew BC

What should I wear?

During the summer (June through August), light summer tops and pants or shorts are fine, but it’s a good idea to bring layers such as a fleece jacket or sweater. It is surprisingly cool traveling quickly over the ocean. On cool days, evening trips and during the spring (April – May) and fall (September – October), long pants, sweaters, snug fitting hats and warm footwear is recommended.

Can I bring a camera?

Yes! If you are joining us on a zodiac tour, we recommend talking to captain before your tour as he may recommend that you put it in the dry storage beneath your seat depending on the wind, weather, and sea conditions on the day of tour. Onboard covered vessel tours, if we experience inclement weather you can leave it in the heated indoor cabin, protected from the elements.

Are there bathrooms on the boat?

There is a bathroom onboard all covered vessel tours.

Are there snacks and beverages available for purchase on board?

Snacks and pop available for purchase for $2 on board during covered vessel tours.

What is your cancellation policy?

24 hour cancellation policy

• Check-in time for your flight is 25 minutes prior to departure. Unclaimed seats may be sold 15 minutes prior to departure. Passengers not checked-in 15 minutes prior to departure may be charged a no-show fee in the full amount of their flight and have return flights cancelled.
• Please be prepared to show government Issued photo identification.It’s required for all passengers 18 years and older.
• Luggage  restrictions based on fare booked. Please see Luggage for complete details. All luggage exceeding allowance will be sent on a standby basis and may be subject to excess luggage fees.
• The maximum weight per single piece of luggage is 50 pounds.
• Cancellations:  Please note that flights may experience delays or cancellations due to inclement weather.
• Scheduled flight group bookings of 4 or more: any cancellations made within 24 hours of departure are subject to a 50% cancellation fee. (For passengers booked on GoGOLD, Flex & Lite/ GoFAST fares are non-refundable)
• Date restrictions:  The Harbour Air Seaplane package is offered year-round.
• Guests must check in at least 30 minutes prior to departure time at their specific check in location
• Passenger boarding begins 15 minutes prior to departure time

• The Zodiac is not recommended for those with neck or back injuries, expectant mothers, or children under the age of 6

Having a whale of a time as a raft guide

Lucas gamp shares his story.

What began as a typical day for Lucas Gamp turned out to be anything but.

The VIU Recreation and Tourism student is on a summer work term at Tidal Bore Rafting Resort in Nova Scotia, about an hour’s drive from Halifax. The company offers motorized rafting activities on the lower Shubenacadie River in eight-seater inflatable zodiac boats. The river is connected to the Bay of Fundy, which features the highest and fastest rising tides in the world.

On June 10, Lucas and three other guides took 30 guests out for a regular two-hour tour. They made a routine stop at a large sandbar to watch and wait for the tidal wave to come in. While they were waiting, they noticed something large in the distance and a “very fishy smell” in the air.

“Everyone instantly realized it was a whale, but only on closer investigation did we realize that it was still alive in a small 20-centimetre-deep tide pool located half-a-kilometer from the nearest water in the shallow freshwater river. It was more than 10 kilometres from the open ocean,” Lucas says. “The whale would have gotten stuck on the sand bar when the tide drained from the river estuary approximately six hours earlier.”

Lucas, along with the other guides and guests approached the whale, scattering away the crows and eagles that were pecking at it in the process. The day was a hot and sunny one, so the guests started splashing water on the whale while Lucas and the other guides radioed the company’s office to let them know about the situation and ask them to call wildlife services.

Lucas also told his guests to avoid any direct physical contact with the whale, and “we definitely didn’t try to move or herd it towards the ocean with our boats, as that would have been dangerous for everyone and distressed the animal even further.”

The whale was a 15-metre-long Minke Whale and “was not moving much,” Lucas recalls. “We kept splashing the whale until we saw the tidal wave (aka bore) in the distance.”

At that point, everybody went back to the boats to continue the rafting trip, while Lucas’ boss, who was driving the spare boat, stayed near the whale to ensure that other motorized rafts from other companies unaware of the situation would not hit it.

The whale’s predicament was not over yet, though.

As the tidal wave flooded over the sandbar, the whale started to put up a huge fight and began thrashing like crazy trying to escape, Lucas remembers. This lasted for about 10 minutes until the tide had flooded the sand bar up to about two metres deep and the whale was flushed up the river and away from the ocean by the waves.

“The whale was disoriented and could not swim properly, having been lying on the sand for too long,” Lucas says. This meant that even though the whale had managed to escape the sandbar as the tide came in, it was pushed by the water deeper into the river and away from the ocean, leaving it vulnerable to becoming trapped again.

The last view Lucas and the group had of the whale was of it “thrashing around as it got flushed into the river.”

The next day, a local resident reported seeing the whale passing under a bridge near the mouth of the river and heading out to the ocean as the overnight tide drained and that it appeared to be healthy.

Wildlife services also conducted aerial surveys of the area that morning to see if they could spot the whale on the sandbars.

“They saw nothing and the small river itself was too small at low tide for the whale to hide in so if it was there, it definitely would have been seen,” Lucas explains. “This meant the whale had certainly escaped back into the Bay of Fundy alive.”

The ordeal also caught the attention of CBC National News and was shared on the program.

“It is certainly the most unique rafting trip many guides and guests have been on,” he adds.

All-in-all, Lucas is thankful the story has a happy ending.

He will return to VIU this fall for his final year of school and plans to work in "the water-based tourism industry” once he graduates.

We found Ocean Therapy Charters almost by accident and are glad we did! They went out of their way to help make our trip happen. The boat was in excellent condition and they only take up to six divers; we were fortunate as we were the only two on this outing. It had been 7 years since I last dove so I was a bit nervous at the beginning. Dive master Mike was attentive and my insecurities quickly vanished, he was an excellent underwater guide, knowing where to look for the elusive sea life. Both the pilot and assistant were friendly attentive making for an excellent overall experience. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing dive locations, clean and safe boat, and accommodating crew! My son and I did a 2 tank dive, 1 deep wreck, and one medium depth. Roger was our dive master and stand-up comic. I have never laughed so much underwater in my life. The high quality DPV scooters just pushed the dive over the top!

Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour stop in London  (round one) has wrapped up, and it was another star-studded three-night affair!

On Sunday, June 23, the 34-year-old "London Boy" crooner hit the stage for the third and final time at Wembley Stadium this month, and welcomed another crop of big-name celebrities to the VIP tent, including a member of The Beatles and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs Travis Kelce -- who attended all three nights and even hit the stage. The visits come after Swift performed her first two shows on Friday and Saturday, welcoming more than 160,000 fans between the two days -- including real royalty . 

In attendance on Sunday was close friend Gracie Abrams -- who released a new song, "Us," with Swift on Friday -- as well as The Beatles' Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi, Ellie Goulding and many, many more. Given Swift's connection to the U.K. capital -- she lived in London on and off with Joe Alwyn , her ex-boyfriend of six years -- it's no surprise just how many famous friends turned out over the course of the three-day stop. 

Those who missed out on the first London leg (featuring  chicken tenders with seemingly ranch ) will have a chance to catch the Eras Tour at Wembley Stadium in August, when Swift returns for five more shows before she officially says "So Long, London" and heads back to the U.S. for tour dates in New Orleans, Miami and Indianapolis.

William and the royal kiddos -- Prince George and Princess Charlotte -- made an appearance at the show. The concert fell on William's 42nd birthday, who celebrated by dancing to Swift's hit, "Shake It Off." As a special treat, Swift and her boyfriend,  Travis Kelce  had a private meet-and-greet with the royals backstage. 

Swift later went back to that same IG post and tagged Kelce, the first time she's done that.

Swift is no stranger to big names in the crowd. In August, during her Eras Tour stop in Los Angeles , her VIP tent saw friend after friend enter, including Selena Gomez, Mindy Kaling, Charlize Theron, Emma Stone, Channing Tatum and Kevin Costner, among many others. Since then, her No. 1 VIP has been No. 87 on the Kansas City Chiefs, Travis Kelce , who Swift  began dating in late (not so cruel) summer  of last year.

In May, Kelce  attended Swift's 87th Eras Tour show , which just so happened to occur in the City of Love -- Paris, France. Coincidence or is she a mastermind ? Regardless, Kelce was accompanied by her close friends, Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper , while her mom,  Andrea Swift , and  Lenny Kravitz  were also in attendance. 

After a two-month break from the end of February to early May, Swift resumed her record-breaking world tour in Nanterre, France, and has visited Sweden, Portugal and Scotland in the weeks since, making each show with unique surprise songs -- including the recently debuted " murder mashup " and " diss track mashup. "

Sadly, Swift recently used her 100th show to announce that the Eras Tour will officially conclude  in December as she finishes out the two-year spanning undertaking in Vancouver, Canada -- the hometown of her good friend, Ryan Reynolds , who we predict will absolutely be present.

Our Catamaran

Prince of Whales operates two custom-built catamarans for whale watching tours. The Salish Sea Dream and The Salish Sea Eclipse. Both vessels are designed to be environmentally friendly, comfortable and fast.

The catamarans are designed to minimize their impact on the marine environment and wildlife. They use low-emission engines, hydrofoil technology, and advanced hull design to reduce fuel consumption and noise pollution. They also follow strict guidelines for responsible whale watching practices, such as keeping a safe distance from the whales, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction, and limiting their time with each group of whales.

Cancellation Policy

Need to cancel or reschedule – no problem! Just contact us at least 48 hours prior to your adventure’s departure to reschedule or to cancel (and receive a full refund), no questions asked.

• For independent travel bookings of 9 passengers or less: 48 hours before scheduled departure, partial or whole cancellations made within 48 hours before departure will be charged 100% of the tour price. Tour amendments cannot be completed within a 48-hour window. There will be no refunds for cancellations within the cancellation period.
• For groups of 10-19: 14 days before scheduled departure, partial or whole cancellations made within 14 days before departure will be charged 100% of the tour price based on the reserved number of passengers, or the final number in attendance, whichever is greater. Tour amendments cannot be guaranteed within a 14-day window.
• For Groups 20+: 21 days before scheduled departure; partial or whole cancellations made within 21 days before departure will be charged 100% of the tour price. Tour amendments cannot be guaranteed within the 21-day window.
• For wholesale, travel trade, and 3rd party bookings, the cancellation and amendment policy can differ. Please refer to your booking contract for details.
• Discounted or promotional bookings are final sale.

Prepare for Adventure

It gets cold out on the water (trust us!), so we recommend  windbreaker jackets, sweaters, long pants, and closed-toe shoes .

It’s also a good idea to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a tight-fitting hat, binoculars, a camera to capture some memorable moments and, above all, your sense of adventure!

The boat used for this adventure is not wheelchair accessible. If you require assistance, please call us to book.

Do tours run in all types of weather?

Tours operate rain or shine! Safety is our priority and, in extreme weather conditions or high winds, adventures may be cancelled at the discretion of our qualified crew. We will be in touch should this be the case.

Will we really see whales?

Yes! There is a high chance of seeing orcas, humpbacks, and other types of whale on your tour. Our year-round whale sighting success rate is ~95% (averaged across all of our adventures) with chances being even higher during summer months.

What happens if we don’t see a whale?

This adventure is covered by our year-round Whale Sighting Guarantee. In the unlikely case, we do not see whales on this adventure, you can join us on another whale watching tour. This guarantee is valid for a lifetime!

Are there bathrooms on the boat?

The boat we use for this tour is equipped with two airline-style washrooms.

Do passengers often feel seasick?

No, our boats are custom-built for whale watching with passengers in mind. Captain and crew will also do their best to minimize the impact of the sea. However, if you are prone to seasickness, we recommend you purchase non-drowsy Gravol from a pharmacy prior to your adventure with us.

Are there snacks or beverages on board?

Complementary tea, coffee & hot chocolate will be available on board. Light snacks (chips, cookies, chocolate bars) can be purchased with CAD cash. You can also bring your own snacks.

Do I need to make a reservation?

Reservations are definitely recommended. Adventures often sell out and we don’t want you to be disappointed.
