Recent tour reviews

It was amazing!!! From the moment they went on stage to the very last second it was just so much positive energy coming from the band. The crowd was bad, but that isn’t The Killers’ fault! They did the absolute most and it paid off. Brandon hit those high notes despite his flu, Ronnie was legendary on the drums, Ted was amazing, the choir was amazing, et cetera et cetera. It’s a shame (especially for the people that DID know all their songs) that the crowd bothered them so much that they didn’t play Mr. Brightside, but again, the band isn’t to blame.

These Las Vegas legends know how to give a great performance!

This was, so far, the best concert for The Killers that I've ever seen (& I've seen them 3 times already). The acoustics for the Staples Center wasn't the absolute best, but it didn't matter when the whole stadium was singing at the top of their lungs along with the band. First of all, since this was the Wonderful Wonderful Tour, I thought the band would play mostly songs from the new album, but to my surprise, they performed a great mix of songs from their entire discography. What surprised me the most was that The Killers played a ton more songs from their Hot Fuss album than they ever had before. They even dug deep to perform such notable songs like "Andy, You're A Star" & "Smile Like You Mean It". A beautifully sweet touch was when the band performed a new, sort of spur-of-the-moment, song about Los Angeles...a song they had written on the road just before their L.A. leg of the tour. One of the major highlights of the entire concert was when the band had invited a young teenage fan up onto the stage to play the drums on the song "For Reasons Unknown". Apparently this has become an ongoing tradition of the band, to invite fans up on the stage to perform with them. This was such a touching, yet totally bad-ass moment, & I hope The Killers keep on doing this at every concert tour from now on. By the end of the concert, my friends & I had lost our voices from singing & screaming so loudly, but it was one thousand percent worth it. The Killers proved with their electrifying & humorous stage presence, along with their amazing voices & talent, that they will forever hold the spot of being my all-time favorite band.

I actually saw the show at Barclays on Tuesday the 8th. Let me start by saying I see a lot of concerts every year and was only familiar with the better known of The Killers songs. Having said that - they were EXCELLENT! Flowers is a magnificent front man with a set of pipes to carry stadiums. The band is flawless and so rock and roll. I will judge a band by how much they can hook me with a song I’ve never heard before . From the opening with Wonderful Wonderful and The Man thru The Calling start to the encore I was dazzled. I downloaded everything and I’m now a confirmed fan. I will see them again ASAP. One of the best live I have seen -ever. And I’m no spring chicken.

Rebel Diamonds is a curated dive into an impressive catalogue of songwriting and musicianship - one that has solidified the band as one of the most important voices in rock ‘n’ roll over the last two decades. The album features at least one song from each of the band’s seven studio albums. From the groundbreaking debut Hot Fuss , celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, to the band’s latest full length LP, 2021’s Pressure Machine , Rebel Diamonds showcases the group’s versatility and staying power across the ever-changing alternative music landscape.  The collection is made up of songs that embody who The Killers are as a band, additionally including some favourites of theirs that have resonated over the years - tracks like “ Be Still, ” from 2012’s album Battle Born or “ Dying Breed ” from 2020’s album Imploding The Mirage or “ A Dustland Fairytale ” from 2008’s Day & Age , which the band recently re-recorded and performed with Bruce Springsteen.

Teddy Swims sings his heart out in concert.

Teddy Swims will be on land quite a bit this year.

The rising R&B star recently announced he’s embarking on his nationwide ‘I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy Tour’ with backing band Freak Freely come fall.

That includes shows at Syracuse’s Landmark Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 24, Albany’s Palace Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 26 and Atlantic City’s Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Shortly after the announcement, Swims shared that the tour had sold out.

“All I can say is THANK YOU,” he wrote on Instagram . “The tour is sold out! I love you so much!”

However, our team did some digging and found tickets for all 2024 Teddy Swims shows including festival appearances and one-off gigs before the tour.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on tickets to a show was $14 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other concerts have tickets starting anywhere from $50 to $334 before fees.

Teddy Swims set list

At a recent gig in Birmingham, AL, Swims performed a 20-song set.

For a closer look, here’s what he took to the stage, courtesy of Set List FM :

“01.) “Goodbye’s Been Good To You” 02.) “What More Can I Say” 03.) “Broke” 04.) “911” 05.) “Dose” 06.) “All That Really Matters” 07.) “Hammer To My Heart” 08.) “Evergreen” 09.) “Suitcase” 10.) “2 Moods” 11.) “Simple Things” 12.) “Amazing” 13.) “Some Things I’ll Never Know” 14.) “Flame” 15.) “You’re Still the One” (Shania Twain cover) 16.) “Last Communion” 17.) “Bed on Fire” 18.) “Tell Me” 19.) “Lose Control” 20.) “The Door”

Teddy Swims new music

On April 26, Swims dropped “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1.5)” which includes four additional songs that weren’t on the original record.

The sun-dappled, blue-eyed-soul record, which sounds like a cross between Cee-Lo and Chris Stapleton, seamlessly marries soul and country rock.

For our money, all four new album entries — the bombastic “Hammer To The Heart,” tender “Apple Juice,” sensitive “Tell Me” and laid back “Growing Up Is Getting Old” — are all worthy additions to the already spectacular record.

If you want to hear Swims’ new music (as well as all the cuts you know and love from the original release), you can listen to “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1.5)” here .

Freak Freely

Swims’ backing band is known as Freak Freely.

The five-piece that brings Swims’ singular voice to life is made up of pianist/keyboardist Jairus Hardge, guitarist Addy Maxwell, guitarist Jesse Hampton, guitarist Christian Griswold, and drummer DeAndre Hemby.

‘Running tens of thousands in debt from the tour and I’m being told that it’s normal’ … Arooj Aftab performing in Brooklyn in June 2023.

‘The working class can’t afford it’: the shocking truth about the money bands make on tour

As Taylor Swift tops $1bn in tour revenue, musicians playing smaller venues are facing pitiful fees and frequent losses. Should the state step in to save our live music scene?

W hen you see a band playing to thousands of fans in a sun-drenched festival field, signing a record deal with a major label or playing endlessly from the airwaves, it’s easy to conjure an image of success that comes with some serious cash to boot – particularly when Taylor Swift has broken $1bn in revenue for her current Eras tour. But looks can be deceiving. “I don’t blame the public for seeing a band playing to 2,000 people and thinking they’re minted,” says artist manager Dan Potts. “But the reality is quite different.”

Post-Covid there has been significant focus on grassroots music venues as they struggle to stay open. There’s been less focus on the actual ability of artists to tour these venues. David Martin, chief executive officer of the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), says we’re in a “cost-of-touring crisis”. Pretty much every cost attached to touring – van hire, crew, travel, accommodation, food and drink – has gone up, while fees and audiences often have not. “[Playing] live is becoming financially unsustainable for many artists,” he says. “Artists are seeing [playing] live as a loss leader now. That’s if they can even afford to make it work in the first place.”

Potts, who works at Red Light Management – home to everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Kaiser Chiefs and Sofia Kourtesis – feels like there is an industry equivalent of the Spider-Man meme in which they are all pointing to one another. “People who work at labels think bands make loads of money touring, while booking agents think they make loads of money on publishing and so on,” he says. “Everyone thinks artists make money from the other side of the industry they’re not involved in.

“Artists are the biggest employers in the industry. They pay for the tour manager, session musicians, agent, manager, crew, insurance, travel, accommodation, equipment, rehearsal space, production. Everything. I don’t think people know this is all the stuff that the artist pays for and does.”

Lily Fontaine of English Teacher performing in 2022.

“Greater transparency is needed,” says Lily Fontaine, lead singer of Leeds band English Teacher. On paper, the four-piece appear to have made it. They are signed with a major label, Island, have played on Later With … Jools Holland, get healthy BBC Radio 6Music airplay, their debut album has received five-star reviews and they are about to embark on their biggest tour to date, which includes an 800-capacity home-town show.

“The reality is that it’s normal for all of these achievements to coexist alongside being on Universal Credit, living at home or sofa surfing,” says Fontaine. During the making of their debut album, she and bandmate Lewis Whiting did the latter while unable to afford rent.

In their four years of existence, English Teacher have yet to turn a profit from touring. “We’ve never directly paid ourselves from a gig,” says Whiting. “A headline tour usually comes out with a deficit. The only thing that we ever make any kind of profit on is festivals, because the fees can be higher, but any money left over just goes towards the next outgoings.” A successful show for the group in the past has been defined by whether they can flog enough merch to afford a supermarket food shop.

So how do they survive? “In the world of artists, we’re in a lucky position,” says Whiting. “We try to pay ourselves £500 a month each from the band pot.” However, they’ve been reliant on their advance for this, which is now gone. “We’re now in that stage where we’re gonna have to figure out where that £500 a month is gonna come from,” says Fontaine. “Because the gig fees won’t be able to cover that.” The band estimate that their 16-date UK tour in May will generate roughly £800 profit. But, says Fontaine, “realistically, I don’t think there will be any profit because things always go over budget”.

For many artists, fees aren’t increasing in line with costs. “There’s been no real incline at all,” says Potts. “For support slots, I don’t think the fees have changed in the last 10 years or so that I’ve been managing, whether that’s £50 at the smaller end or £500 quid for some of the biggest shows.” Fees for headline shows can vary enormously for bands, even on the same tour. Playing a 200-capacity club in Newcastle may land you £600, while a 1,500 cap in London may net you £3,000.

And fewer people are coming to shows at the small-to-mid-sized end of things. “In our audience data, we see there is a gap in new audiences coming through post-pandemic,” says the FAC’s Martin. “As well as a bit of a drop-off in some of the older audiences returning to live shows.” However, despite stagnant fees and shrinking audiences, touring activity in the UK is at a peak. Due to the costs of touring Europe (which can be thousands in taxes and carnet alone) 74% fewer UK bands are now touring Europe post-Brexit. “It’s much more difficult to tour in Europe so there are more artists trying to perform domestically,” says Martin. “That creates a saturation problem.”

For this article, the Guardian has seen 12 tour budget sheets for various bands and artists varying from up-and-comers to firmly established and successful acts, all of whom regularly undertake headline tours across the UK in venues ranging from 150 to 2,500 capacity. Almost all of these result in losses. Understandably, most shared their balance sheets on the condition of anonymity. One four-piece indie band, whose last two albums went Top 10 in the UK charts, reported a loss of £2,885 from a six-day UK tour. The only tour that shows anything resembling healthy profit was a 29-date tour for a solo artist who came away with £6,550. Not bad going for a month’s work but, as Martin points out, “that’s then his touring done for the next six months. So it’s not enough money.”

‘It’s getting more difficult, without a shadow of a doubt’ … Nubiyan Twist.

Nubiyan Twist are a nine-piece Afro-jazz outfit who have a loyal following and tens of millions of streams on Spotify, “We pride ourselves on being able to put on a big show, like your Fela Kutis or James Browns, these epic spectacles,” says bandleader Tom Excell. “But it’s getting more difficult, without a shadow of a doubt.” For an upcoming eight-show tour of Europe, they are predicting a loss of £4,931.28. The only way they can justify doing it is because they got funding from the BPI Music Export Growth Scheme. “I would have just pulled the plug if it wasn’t for that,” says Excell. “I’ve got a two-year-old and I can’t be away from home for that long and come back with a loss.”

Even when the band get more lucrative fees for festivals it’s still tough. They will be paid £5,000 for a festival performance this summer but the total profit after band wages (as Excell pays all his band members in full first) expenses and commissions are paid out will be £277.60. “After four albums and 15 years doing this, to still be having to gamble on whether I’m going to make anything, while everyone else gets paid a guaranteed amount, is a struggle,” admits Excell.

Such thin margins leave little wiggle room, as the space-surf band Japanese Television (who headline 100-300 capacity venues) found out when their booking agent reduced their 13-date UK and EU tour to eight shows with a five-day gap in the middle that will add a further loss of around £1,200 to a tour that is already set to lose them around £700. “Records and T-shirts are basically what keeps us going,” says the band’s Tim Jones. “The only way this tour is working for us is because we just put out our second album and we did about 60 presales on the vinyl and that was basically enough to pay for the van. It’s a hobby that just about pays for itself.”

after newsletter promotion

The question is: who else will be able to afford to pursue music as a hobby? “It depresses me how many middle and upper class people there are in the music industry,” says manager Potts. “Because the working class just can’t afford to fork out £150 a day for van hire. The only artists doing that are people who have deeper pockets and can afford to take the hit.”

Of course, every act is different in terms of what they justify as reasonable outgoings and not everyone has the same costs, but Potts says from his experience, generally speaking, bands with four or five members now need to be playing 2,000+ capacity venues nationwide to “really start to see things tip”. That tipping point is out of reach for the majority. “Most people don’t actually get to that level,” Potts says. “Just look back at any festival lineup from 10-20 years ago and see which names are still on festival bills and how many you’re like: what happened to them?”

The gap between those who are flying and those who are floundering has become even more stark. “It feels like the top 1% have become the top 0.5%,” says Martin. “The level of artists we’re talking about here that are struggling to make things stack up financially would really surprise people.”

In 2022, the Grammy-winning Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab posted on X: “Touring has been amazing. We headlined a ton, had massive turnouts and have proven ourselves in all the markets. Yet still, running tens of thousands in debt from the tour and I’m being told that it’s ‘normal’. Why is this normal? This should not be normalised.”

I’m told that one US artist – who released one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2023, which went Top 10 and placed very highly on numerous year-end polls and was nominated for a major award – worked out that the only way she could make her UK tour work was by sub-letting her home.

Workers in Singapore prepare the merch stand for Taylor Swift’s Eras tour earlier this year – the tour is set to break a billion dollars in revenue.

It’s a far cry from Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras jaunt. “The very high end of the live industry is reporting record profits,” says Martin. “You can’t have a healthy music ecosystem where at one end you’ve got people going ‘we’ve made more money than we’ve ever made’ and at the other end you’ve got relatively successful artists that are sofa-surfing while signed to a major label.”

Is there an answer? “When you’re touring Europe, you realise how much state funding in the arts there is,” says Excell. “It really needs more state funding and support from the top down.”

Martin echoes this. “The government needs to start looking at spending money on the music industry as an investment rather than as a cost,” he says. “But you also need to support a sector in a time of crisis. And this is a time of crisis.”

Killers of the Flower Moon Author, and BU Alum, David Grann Will Be BU’s 151st Commencement Speaker

Class of 2024 celebrated at largest-ever senior breakfast.

Organizers said Thursday’s event was the largest Senior Breakfast ever, with students seated on three floors of the George Sherman Union.

Best-selling author David Grann (GRS’94), whose book Killers of the Flower Moon was recently made into an Oscar-nominated thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, will deliver the main address at Boston University’s 151st Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19.

The news was announced at Thursday morning’s annual Senior Breakfast in the George Sherman Union, which was attended by an estimated 2,500 students. University President ad interim Kenneth Freeman—assisted by a special celebrity guest—revealed this year’s honorary degree recipients at the breakfast, which is considered the official kickoff event of the 2024 Commencement ceremonies.

Photo: A picture of a man with white hair in sunglasses raising his arms behind a podium

Organizers said Thursday’s event was the largest Senior Breakfast ever, and a far cry from how the graduating seniors started their BU careers in August 2020. At that time, the world was just five months into the COVID-19 pandemic, and the new Terriers spent their freshman year taking classes remotely or in person, but with strict masking and social distancing protocols in place. Senior Breakfast was most likely the largest gathering of the Class of 2024 ever, as their orientation had been via Zoom.

Photo: A picture of a crowd watching a video of Robert De Niro on a projector screen

When it came time to announce the Commencement speaker, Freeman pointed up to the screen, where Killers of the Flower Moon and The Godfather star Robert De Niro read off Grann’s name, describing him as “one of the great storytellers of our time.”

“A natural storyteller, David has a sixth sense for sniffing out a great story and a master’s touch for telling it,” the two-time Oscar-winning actor said. “With the blood of Terriers running through his veins, you’re lucky to have him as your Commencement speaker. Congratulations.”

(Read Bostonia ’s recent interview with Grann about his new nonfiction book The Wager: a Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder, here . )

Grann will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the Commencement ceremony. Freeman also announced the other honorary degree recipients: Rev. Walter Earl Fluker (GRS’88, STH’88), BU’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Ethical Leadership (honorary Doctor of Laws); Claudia Goldin, a Harvard professor and 2023 winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics (honorary Doctor of Laws); and Kenneth Feld (Questrom’70), former trustee and chair of the Board of Trustees and chair and chief executive officer of Feld Entertainment (honorary Doctor of Humane Letters). Fluker will deliver the Baccalaureate address at Marsh Chapel on Commencement morning.

Event emcee Jason Campbell-Foster, dean of students, kicked off the event, and Rev. Robert Allan Hill, dean of Marsh Chapel, delivered an invocation before seniors dug into a meal of fresh seasonal fruit, pastries, and roasted grape tomato and mozzarella strata. On the big screen were screengrabs of their freshman-year selves from their Zoom orientation.

The morning featured live music and performances by the BU Jazz Combo, the Treblemakers, and the 30-foot-tall John R. Silber Symphonic Organ . One of the most popular parts of the breakfast was a visit from Bean, BU’s new golden retriever comfort dog , who enthusiastically greeted the seniors at their tables (no word if someone slipped her a sausage under the table).

Photo: A picture of an interviewer and camera crew around a yellow labrador retriever on a red carpet

Class Gift committee members Amanda Brown (COM’24), Sage Winkler (CAS’24), and Yadira Cabrera (COM’24) then announced that the Class Gift—which supports programs like scholarships, student life, and athletics—has already raised more than $50,000; they encouraged their classmates to keep donating.

Campbell-Foster returned to the stage to give a brief rundown of Commencement dos and don’ts (small purses only, pointy heels are not Nickerson Field turf-friendly, and a prompt 12:15 pm arrival, please), the Senior Week lineup, and the news that Michael Arellano (CAS’24) will be the Commencement student speaker. He then introduced and thanked Freeman for serving as president ad interim this year. BU’s new president, Melissa L. Gilliam , starts in July.

Freeman walked to the stage to the “I’m Just Ken” song from the Barbie soundtrack. “There’s always something to worry about, and the worry is usually justified, but at the same time, there are always things to be hopeful about and excited about, too,” Freeman said. “I’m optimistic about the future because of you… You, the Class of 2024, are imaginative, hardworking, kind, serious, and courageous. And you leave BU prepared to make a big difference in the world.”

The honorary degree recipients were then announced.

New Yorker staff writer and best-selling author David Grann has written some of the most popular nonfiction books of recent years, among them The Lost City of Z, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, and most recently, The Wager: a Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder , which is being adapted for the screen by Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese and will star Leonardo DiCaprio. Grann is a winner of the Edgar Allen Poe Award for best true crime book and a finalist for the National Book Award and the Samuel Johnson Prize. His stories have appeared in publications such as The Best American Crime Writing, the New York Times Magazine , and The Atlantic. He graduated in 1994 with an MFA from BU’s Creative Writing Program.

Former School of Theology Professor Walter Earl Fluker is a well-known scholar of theory and ethical leaders, among them Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon.’59) and Howard Thurman (Hon.’67), Marsh Chapel’s dean from 1953 to 1965, the first Black dean at a mostly white American university. Claudia Goldin, the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard, is the former director of the National Bureau of Economic Research’s Development of the American Economy Program; her research covers the female labor force. Kenneth Feld is chair and chief executive officer of Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Monster Jam, Disney Live! and Disney On Ice, a BU trustee for 24 years, and chair of the board for 6 years.

During Senior Breakfast, Freeman also announced the recipients of the University’s highest teaching honors, the Metcalf Cup and Prize and Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching . The top honor, the Cup and Prize, will be awarded to Yuri Corrigan , a College of Arts & Sciences associate professor of Russian and comparative literature. The Metcalf Award winners are Veronika Wirtz , a School of Public Health professor of global health, and Alexis Peri , a CAS associate professor of history. All three will be honored during the Commencement ceremony.
