Despite taking a number of splits, 10CC has been playing rock music since 1972 and are from Stockport, Cheshire, England.

Having known each other as boys, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme eventually met Graham Gouldman having attended the same secondary school as Godley; their musical enthusiasm led to playing at the local Jewish Lads' Brigade. Because each member had been a part of a different band, the band wasn’t officially formed as 10CC until 1972. Having been joined by Eric Stewart, the band signed with UK Records in 1971 and released their self-titled debut album in 1972 through Strawberry Studios. Despite the release of another successful album entitled “Sheet Music” in 1973, the band split with their label and moved to Mercury Records in February 1975.

While with Mercury Records, the band recorded and released two albums, “The Original Soundtrack” (released in 1975) and “How Dare You!” (released in 1976); both of which were considered successful. However, due to friction between the creative minds, the band split in 1976 for the first time. When the “How Dare You!” was completed, Godley and Creme left 10cc to work on a project that eventually evolved into the triple LP set Consequences. Meanwhile, Stewart and Gouldman opted to continue as 10cc, working with drummer Paul Burgess, who had been their tour backup drummer. Together the three of them released “Deceptive Bends” in 1977, and then set out on tour.

Unfortunately, the band hit another set back when Stewart was badly injured in a car crash, and not releasing any new material until 1981 with “Ten Out of 10.” However, after 1983 the band started to grow apart, with both Stewart and Gouldman producing for other projects. With the exception of a four CD box set of greatest hits, it wasn’t until 1991 that the band truly reunited with all four original members coming together to record “…Meanwhile” which was subsequently released in 1992. The album did not spawn any major hits, but was relatively well received in Japan and in Europe and thus the band set out on a successful tour of the two countries.

After the tour, Stewart parted ways with the band permanently, and again the band did not play together until 1999 when Gouldman reconvened the band. Despite not releasing any new material, the band has continued to play live shows, and in 2012 the band celebrated their 40th anniversary.

Live reviews

I am an absolute sucker for power pop. The 70s, particularly the early 70s, was a decade that was flooded with this style of music. T.Rex, Big Star and The Raspberries were dominating the pop charts at that time; however, 10cc as talented as they were have -to an extent- been unjustly overlooked. They are group who approached their songwriting with sharp wit and acute self-awareness. They knew what type of music sold and weren't necessarily shy about exploiting budding trends. Having been studio musicians and writers of hit songs for band like the Yardbirds and Herman's Hermits they were knowledgeable on the process of creating pop masterpieces.

Considering 10ccs is comprised of studio musicians it goes with out question they are excellent live performers. Their shows are precisely coordinated and well mixed. The sound is tight. The drums are compressed and well maintained, the bass lays nicely in the mix, and the guitars are crystal clear. During the dreamesque interludes in their performance the keyboards, guitars, and vocals start to loose their definition and flow into unison with each other.

10ccs are very enjoyable to watch live because they not only play their soft rock hits such as "Not In Love" but they also delve straight into more progressive and interesting styles of music. The song "Dreadlock Holiday" is a reggae sort of jam teeming with wild percussion, swirling keyboard riffs, upstroke guitar chucks wetted with flange and a grooving dub bass line. The group might even show their prog rock side with songs like "Art for Art Sake" presumably a reference to the 19th century philosophy of aestheticism. In this song they really show off their technical skills indulging in dual guitar solos, keyboard improvisations and divergences into weird time signatures. 10ccs constantly prove to their audience that their concerts can be just as exciting as they are relaxing.

The gig took place at Tinghallen in Viborg, Denmark 25/11/16. Being an important band in my youth in the seventies, it became an absolutely fantastic experience that brought me back on memory lane reaching goose bumps several times during the one and half hour concert. Brilliant sound, vocals at the very top and a band that was present in full. Simply the best performance I could ever dream of and I'm priviledged to witness the band's outstanding qualities - still going strong after all these years - vintage wine at it's best.

Six out of Six stars - go see them and FEEL THE BENEFIT yourself.

Awsome! Surreal!

Who would have thought that I'd get the chance to actually SEE the band perform? I could tell that they also enjoyed being on stage in Stockholm, making us happy. They did put on a show that felt genuine and as if it was yesterday the songs were written.

I looked around and thought: What a lot of OLD people here… Then, realizing that they are not OLD at all. We are the same age and still kickin' it! :-) I'd suggest everyone that feel the urge to see them on stage GO DO IT!

Thanks guys, I'm still smiling and singing your songs for my patients!

this was one of the best gigs I've attended so far. The warm up band were Amazing and really down to earth even spending the entire interval with the audience. 10cc have not lost anything, the entire show was well put on, entertaining and spanned thier entire history. Would definitley go see these again and would recommend to anyone.

In the first half, we were treated to the whole of the 10cc second album Sheet Music - including the singles The Wall Street Shuffle and Silly Love. The second half consisted of hits from the many other albums. Many standing ovations - I won't spoil the playlist but we were treated to a surprise a capella number.

A brilliant night at Birmingham Symphony Hall. Went as a trip down Memory Lane but WOW - these guys far exceeded expectations. The audience were mesmerised at their musicianship. They were very entertaining too, with a nice smattering of background to the tracks.. Highly recommended - whatever your age!

10cc Bring British Smiles and Virtuosic Playing to Australia

10cc’s material is a thrilling blend of music hall, theatre, the beatles, the beach boys and pop-art appropriations akin to richard hamilton. .

10cc

The Tivoli, Brisbane

Ten minutes into the opening night of 10cc’s current Australian tour, Graham Gouldman pulls out one of the most recognisable bass riffs of the 1970’s on “Art for Art’s Sake”. As the tune finishes, Gouldman points skyward and thanks his dad for providing the lyric inspiration, “art for art’s sake / Money for God’s sake” .

It was Gouldman’s father who spotted a lone milk bottle on the step of a Manchester terrace house in the early 1960’s and suggested to a young Graham that there might be a song in it. There was. The teenager went on to write “No Milk Today” for Herman’s Hermits, “Bus Stop” for the Hollies and “For Your Love” and “Heart Full of Soul” for the Yardbirds.

As Goldman leans into that riff, you’re struck by the fact that this man – one of Britain’s songwriting greats – has been doing this pretty much since the Beatles dropped “Please Please Me” in 1963.

When 10cc started in Stockport in 1972, they were a band made up of four distinct musical personalities: Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. Godley & Creme jumped ship in 1976 to work further in music and then video. Stewart stayed partnered with Gouldman, officially, until 1983, followed by a long hiatus and a 1990’s reunion.

Today Gouldman is the last man standing, fronting a band that includes veteran Paul Burgess (who’s been on 10cc’s drum stool for fifty years), guitarist Rick Fenn (who’s clocked a 46-year tenure in the touring band), Keith Hayman on piano/keys/guitar and percussion and relative newbie Ian Hornal who not only sings Stewart’s parts sublimely, but adds guitar/keys and percussion.

Before the show starts, I’m reminded of the Ship of Theseus – the thought experiment that challenges the nature of identity and change. It poses the paradox of a ship whose parts are gradually replaced over time, so that none of the original components remain. Is the ship still the same? By the time 10cc are rolling into “Life Is a Minestrone” and “The Wall Street Shuffle”, I no longer care.

Tonight Gouldman, who gives author credits to past members throughout, shines a light on everything from the hits and album tracks to pieces from the margins. So beautifully unique, the material is a blend of music hall, theatre/satire, the Beatles, the Beach Boys and pop-art appropriations akin to Richard Hamilton.

Early highlights include “Feel the Benefit”, “I’m Mandy Fly Me” and “Silly Love”. To ears that don’t know the catalogue inside out – like mine – the tunes are a delicious sonic challenge. The playing is virtuosic – Hornal, singing out front, or alongside Gouldman and Fenn, is a gem.

There are two new songs, Gouldman’s “Floating in Heaven” and Hornal’s “Say the Word”, as well as five or six stone cold classics.

As the set nears its close, there’s the perfect pop sculpture of “The Things We Do for Love”, “I’m Not in Love” and a stunning a capella of the band’s first single, and then doo-wop pastiche, “Donna”.

The show ends with a thumping “Rubber Bullets”. The audience are on their feet. There’s no fist pumping on stage, just very wide British smiles and the acknowledgement of a job very well done. Brilliant.

10cc ANNOUNCE THE ULTIMATE ULTIMATE GREATEST HITS TOUR CONTINUED

Tickets on-sale: Friday 22 nd March at ticketline.co.uk and venue box offices

10cc band tour dates australia

Art pop and rock icons 10cc, have announced the addition of a further 25 concerts to their The Ultimate Ultimate Greatest Hits Tour for Autumn 2024.

Considered one of the UK’s premier live touring bands, the extra shows come off the back of the band’s most successful UK tour to date, with 18 concerts through March, including an advance sell-out at London’s 5,200-seat Royal Albert Hall.

Having also recently announced an extensive US tour, their first in more than three decades, playing venues such as the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Theater at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles and Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, 10cc’s classic ballad I’m Not In Love, which reached No 2 in the Billboard charts, being included in the soundtrack for Disney’s blockbuster film Guardians of the Galaxy has certainly help raise interest there.

Known for their impeccable live performances, their catalogue of hits sees the band seamlessly transition from art-pop to mock-reggae and impressively harmonised ballads, to prog rock epics Somewhere In Hollywood and Feel The Benefit.

Three of their 11 UK Top 10 hits reached No 1– Rubber Bullets, I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday – and made the charts worldwide, which explains the band’s extensive touring schedule which has taken them Australia and New Zealand, Japan, Iceland, Latvia and from Scandinavia down through mainland Europe.

At the helm is 10cc founding co-member Graham Gouldman, who says,

“What is particularly satisfying is seeing our audience demographic changing with more and more younger people coming to our gigs. The shows in March have been our most successful in the UK and that is very gratifying, as we are only doing what we love – playing the music of 10cc.”

The band line-up comprises Gouldman on bass guitars, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and vocals; Rick Fenn - lead guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals; Paul Burgess - drums, percussion, keyboards; Keith Hayman - keyboards, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals and Andy Park - electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, percussion, mandolin, keyboards, vocals.
