A Tribe Called Quest Most Likely Going on World Tour

A Tribe Called Quest's We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service was a fitting end for one of hip-hop's greatest groups. Although fans will never hear another Tribe LP due to Phife Dawg's  death , they may get to see the group perform one last time. In a new interview, Q-Tip announced tentative plans for a farewell tour.

“This is our last record, and we’ll probably do a world tour,” Q-Tip told Billboard . “After that, that’s it, for the rest of our lives.”

Anyone who saw Tribe on Saturday Night Live knows the remaining members can still put on a great show. They also know how to honor Phife Dawg and blend his verses into the performance.

The new Tribe album touched on some of the political unrest in the country, which was prescient in light of the presidential election. In the Billboard interview, Q-Tip spoke about his disappointment with Donald Trump's victory..

“He’s somebody who’s never held political office,” Q-Tip said.. “He’s never been, like, an assistant coach on a softball team! I guess you could argue that it shows you can be anything you want if you dream big, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who would argue that. And that’s before you even get to the homophobic, racist, sexist, myopic principles he ran on.”

With much of the country worried about its future, We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service could not have arrived at a better time. Check out some of the fan reactions to the album upon its release.

A Tribe Called Quest are a rap group hailing from Queens, New York, United States that formed in 1985. Since debuting, the band have released five studio albums and have gone on to become one of the most influential hip-hop acts of all time.

The band grew out of the friendship between Kamaal Fareed (born Jonathan Davis) and Malik Taylor, who both grew up together in Queens, New York. Fareed was dead set on being a rapper from the start, while Taylor harboured dreams of being a professional basketball player but helped out on Fareed's demos that he made with a local producer by the name of Ali Muhammed. The trio started regularly working together in 1985, but Taylor was reluctant to join until fellow rapper Jarobi White joined as well, and by 1988, the classic line-up of the band had come together, and named themselves A Tribe Called Quest. At this point, Fareed had taken on the stage name Q-Tip, Taylor took Phife Dawg, and after their early demos made the rounds, they signed a record deal with Jive Records in 1989.

Coming at a time when the dominant force of hip-hop was edgy, violent gangsta rap, A Tribe Called Quest's playful, uplifting style jarred against most people's idea of the genre. However, they still became cult heroes shortly after the release of their first album “People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm”, and the three singles from the album “I Left My Wallet In El Segundo”, “Bonita Applebum” and “Can I Kick It”, were top ten hits on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. The band spent the rest of the 90's as one of the most acclaimed rap acts of the time, but didn't see genuine commercial success until the release of their third album “Midnight Marauders”, which was a top ten hit on its release. Its follow up “Beats Rhymes And Life” was another huge hit, hurtling straight to number one and having a knock-on effect on the rest of their discography, with their debut album certified Gold shortly after the records release in 1996.

However, their relationship with Jive was straining more and more every day, and shortly before its release the band announced that their 1998 album “The Love Movement” would be their last as a band. The album was a huge, Grammy award winning success but the band amicably split in 1999, however, after some hugely acclaimed solo records, the band got back together in 2004, and to this day, they remain one of the most beloved live acts in hip-hop. As one of the most respected names in rap music, A Tribe Called Quest come highly recommended.

Live reviews

Part of me wants to describe A Tribe Called Quest as underrated, but that’d be inaccurate; they’ve always enjoyed plenty of critical acclaim. Underappreciated, maybe? Perhaps so, but certainly not within hip-hop culture, where their importance is widely recognised. Maybe it’s just that they never quite managed to capture mainstream success in the way they really should have that’s having me think of the Tribe as hip hop’s great nearly men; they certainly has all the attributes to trouble the right end of the charts, but for one reason or another, they never quite pulled it off. Live, too, their reputation went before them; where so many hip hop acts have carved out a reputation for tardiness and underwhelmingly short sets, the Tribe brought serious energy to their sets, which often lasted in excess of two hours. Key to their success was the interplay between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg; these weren’t shows with hype men shouting the last word of every line, and instead, audiences were treated to genuinely complex, carefully interwoven verses, some of which just so happened to be amongst the finest ever written. After they made a rare appearance supporting Kanye West at two of his New York shows last November, Q-Tip claimed that the book was finally closed on the Tribe; when there’s so much love for them, though, it’d be silly to rule out further reunions.

8 songs from the rock & roll hall of fame’s class of 2024.

Listen to soon-to-be inductees Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest and more.

A magenta dotted line.

By Lindsay Zoladz

Dear listeners,

On Sunday night, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2024 inductees . And while I find this year’s class a tad less exciting than last year’s , there are still quite a few names I was pleased to see: A Tribe Called Quest , Kool & the Gang , Ozzy Osbourne , Mary J. Blige and the artist who would have been at the top of my ballot, if I were a Rock Hall voter: Cher .*

In recent years, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has been in something of a transitional period, as it expands its definition of “rock & roll” to include country legends (last year’s inductees included Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson ) and hip-hop stars (like Eminem in 2022, and Missy Elliott , who in 2023 became the first-ever female rapper inducted). Last September, the Rock Hall co-founder Jann Wenner made headlines for all the wrong reasons when he espoused sexist and racist comments in a New York Times Magazine interview ; shortly after, he was removed from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s board.

The Billboard writer Andrew Unterberger took stock of all this in an astute column about this year’s inductees, which he believes strike a balance between the hall’s more old-fashioned view of rock and a fresher, wider definition that is less beholden to tradition. Artists like Tribe, Cher and Blige are in step with the institution’s drift toward becoming “a less hemmed-in, genre-specific institution,” but the presence of acts like Foreigner, Peter Frampton and the Dave Matthews Band also suggest that “there are still plenty of voters primarily concerned with rock representation.”

All of this variety, though, means that this year’s inductees make for a thrillingly eclectic playlist. Check it out below, featuring some recognizable hits, a few rollicking live cuts and in my humble opinion, a very underrated Cher single.

Allllll aboard!,

*Last month, the hosts of the excellent podcast “Who Cares About the Rock Hall?” had me on to discuss why I believe Cher belongs in the pantheon, as well as my obsession with the outrageous cover of her 1979 album “Take Me Home.”

Listen along while you read.

1. a tribe called quest featuring trugoy the dove : “award tour”.

The beloved rap group A Tribe Called Quest appeared on two previous Rock Hall ballots before getting the nod this year. Celebrate with this victory lap of a single from its classic 1993 album, “Midnight Marauders.” ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

2. Kool & the Gang: “Hollywood Swinging”

The funk legends Kool & the Gang — the prolific hitmakers behind this oft-sampled 1974 track, among many others — have been eligible for decades now, but after their first nomination this year, they’ll finally take their rightful place in the Rock Hall. Said Robert Bell, the last surviving member of the group’s original lineup, “It’s about time.”

▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

3. Cher: “Just Like Jesse James”

Here’s another legend who had never been nominated before this year, as a solo artist or as a part of Sonny & Cher. The big question now is whether Cher — who is justifiably salty about how long it took for her to be recognized — will show up to the ceremony. As she said on Kelly Clarkson’s show just a few months ago, “I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars. I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” Rock star attitude if I’ve ever heard it!

4. Foreigner: “Cold as Ice”

The producer Mark Ronson, who is the stepson of Foreigner’s Mick Jones, led an unofficial campaign to get the rockers on this year’s ballot, asking some of his famous acquaintances — including Paul McCartney — to post on social media expressing shock that the band was not yet in the Rock Hall. It looks like it paid off.

5. Mary J. Blige: “Real Love”

Two years after her commanding performance during the Super Bowl halftime show, Mary J. Blige will receive another high-profile honor when she’s inducted into the Rock Hall this year. This hit from her 1992 debut album “What’s the 411?” still sounds as fresh as the day it was released.

6. Peter Frampton: “Show Me the Way (Live)”

When Sheryl Crow was inducted last year, she selected Peter Frampton as one of the artists she got to jam with — perhaps to draw attention to the fact that, after nearly three decades of eligibility, he still wasn’t in the Rock Hall. In a Rolling Stone interview after news broke that he was in this year’s class, Frampton said, “Sheryl was the first person I called when I found out.”

7. Dave Matthews Band: “Crash Into Me (Live at Continental Airlines Arena)”

In 2020, the Dave Matthews Band won the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s fan vote, but it didn’t help it get in. The group won it again this year, and this time it will be inducted, too.

8. Ozzy Osbourne: “Crazy Train”

And finally, though he was inducted as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006, Ozzy Osbourne was basically a shoo-in for this year’s Rock Hall class, given both his iconic status and his recent health troubles. As Osbourne, whose parting with Black Sabbath was infamously acrimonious, told Billboard after the news broke, “Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band.”

A Tribe Called Quest's vibing with each other.

A Tribe Called Quest told us they were on an “Award Tour, ” and their efforts have finally paid off .

On Sunday (April 21), the group received “music’s highest honor” by being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The group responded to the news on their Instagram with a simple nod to their unity. “A E I O U And sometimes Y,” the post read, referencing their track, “We Can Get Down.”

And much like the iconic rap group , VIBE will be using Tribe’s acclaimed discography to celebrate this career milestone. Honing in on the band’s most successful singles, VIBE will break down their placement on the charts and the samples used to create those timeless songs. Here are A Tribe Called Quest’s biggest singles and the samples that make up those songs.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ATCQ (@atcq)

"Can I Kick It?"

A Tribe Called Quest as they appear in "Can I Kick It."

“Can I Kick It?” was released as the third single off their debut album,  People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm,  in   October 1990. The cut contains numerous samples to create, as some would call it, one of the best Hip-Hop songs of all-time. “Can I Kick It?” features samples from Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side,” Ian Dury and the Blockheads’ “What a Waste,” Dr. Lonnie Smith’s “Spinning Wheel,” “Dance of the Knights” by Sergei Prokofiev, and “Sunshower” by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. While the song was a smash success, peaking at No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart, ATCQ didn’t actually see any bread from the song’s sales. According to  The Grio , Phife Dawg spoke about Reed’s decision to take 100% of the song’s royalties.

“So Lou Reed could have easily said, ‘Oh yeah, a rap group use my sh*t? Alright.’ No. Anita Baker don’t let nobody use her sh*t, period,” Phife said. “So Lou Reed, instead of saying no altogether, he was like, ‘Yeah, nice! Give me the motherf**king money.’ Like Smokey in  Friday .”

Oh, as for People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm , it became the first LP to snag the coveted 5-mic rating in The Source ‘s history.

A Tribe Called Quest s they appear in "Scenario."

“Scenario” is legendary for numerous reasons. The 1992 cut, third single from the  Low End Theory,  is considered as one of Hip-Hop’s posse cuts. “Scenario” is also regarded as the breakout moment for a then 19-year-old Busta Rhymes, who was the frontman for Leaders of the New School. The groundbreaking video features appearances from Redman, Kid Capri, Brand Nubian, De La Soul, Fab Five Freddy, and Spike Lee. On top of that, the song was a success on the rap charts, snagging No. 6 on  Billboard’s  Hot Rap Songs chart.

And you know Q-Tip sampled a couple of songs for this timeless top 10 hit. The Abstract employed the drums from Mitch Mitchell’s drum performance on Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Little Miss Lover.” He then lifted the chords and the baseline from Brother Jack McDuff’s “Oblighetto” to give the song a complete atmosphere.

"Jazz (We've Got)"

A Tribe Called Quest as they appear in the music video for "Jazz."

“Jazz” is one of the best examples of the quintessential ATCQ record: low-key, infectious bassline, irreverent lyricism, and, of course, jazz samples. The song is officially credited to A Tribe Called Quest as the its producer. However, it was Pete Rock who designed the cut from the demo recording of the instrumental, with Tip recreating the beat. Q-Tip gives props to the legendary producer at the end of the song. “Pete Rock for the beat, ya don’t stop.”

During an interview with Moovmnt , the Abstract opened up about Rock’s involvement in the beat and how it began:

“Yeah and this is what happened. We were at his crib in Mount Vernon, and we were all supposed to rhyme over this beat—me, [Pete Rock], and Large Professor,” he recalled. “He was rockin’ it and I was just like ‘Are we gonna do it?!’ and he was like, ‘I don’t know… I don’t know’. So I asked him again, ‘Yo what’s up with that beat that sh*t is hot… yo what’s those records I wanna hook that beat up!’ And he was like, ‘Aight f**k it’. I was like, ‘I’m gonna do that sh*t and then we can exchange, I’ll give you some sh*t’. And he was like, ‘Alright, cool’. That was the story… that’s why on ‘We Got The Jazz’ I said, ‘Pete Rock for the beat ya don’t stop.’ You know… because it was some exchange sh*t.”

As for the samples that were then used in the recreation, we got you covered. The Five Starstep’s “Don’t Change Your Love” was sampled for the song’s main drum sequence. Jimmy McGriff’s “Green Dolphin Street” and The Door’s “Light My Fire” were also sampled for added vocals and instrumentation. The Low End Theory cut landed at No. 19 on the Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart.

"Check The Rhime"

A Tribe Called Quest in the music video for "Check The Rhime."

“Check the Rhime” uses a whopping six samples, three of which are used for drums. These three tracks include “Nobody Beats the Biz” by Biz Markie and T.J. Swan, “I’m Just a Rock ‘N’ Roller” from Dalton & Dubarri, “Hydra” by Grover Washington Jr., “Oblighetto” by Brother Jack McDuff, and the Average White Band’s “Love Your Life.” But the song is probably most closely associated with its Minnie Ripperton sample, “Baby, This Love I Have.”

And these samples made for the perfect combination to catapult the song to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs. In fact, the song ended up moving 500,000 units, which officially certified it as Gold as of September 2021.

"Bonita Applebum"

A Tribe Called Quest as they appear in "Bonita Applebum."

“Bonita Applebum” is probably the most ATCQ-synonymous track on this list—it’s a masterpiece. The single was built from the drums in Little Feat’s “Fool Yourself,” speeding up the composition. The melody and groovy baseline were ripped from Rotary Connection’s “Memory Band” and RAMP’s “Daylight”—both amazing records in their own right.

Q-Tip plays the song solo this go around, creating one of the most playfully sensual Hip-Hop tracks at the time and maybe of all-time. He raps about the beautiful figure of an unnamed woman, historically rumored to be a girl from Tip’s high school, Murry Bergtraum High School. This explains a lot because the song was one of Tribe’s first demos, as the song was crafted in 1985. “Bonita Applebum” originally featured a standard rap delivery. However, the Abstract changed it to employ a conversational approach, like you’re hollering at a young lady.

The song instantly became a fan-favorite, peaking at No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs.

"Electric Relaxation"

A Tribe Called Quest performing in "Electric Relaxation."

Okay, we lied. “Electric Relaxation” is definitely the quintessential Tribe synonymous cut. It has to be. The song was the theme for  The Wayans Bros’  show’s first two seasons, and it was voted as the third best Hip-Hop beat of all time by  Rock The Bells .  I mean, once you hear that baseline sampled from Ronnie Foster’s “Mystic Brew,” you already know the vibes. Look at you, humming along to it right now. Immediately recognizable as greatness. And, according to Phife, it’s always been that way. During an interview with  XXL , the 5-foot Assassin talked about hearing the song for the first time—and being blown away.

“I just remember coming home from somewhere—my grandmother gave him a key, the whole nine, he used to just go in and do his thing—I came home from some type of trip and I walked in the kitchen, and you know, he’s in the basement and you could hear the music coming up, and all I heard was  that . I didn’t even say hello to my grandmother or whoever was in the house, I was just like, ‘Hold on!’ and went downstairs. ‘Yo, what the hell is that?!’ He was like, ‘Yo, that sh*t is crazy, right?’ And it just became what it is now,” Phife recalled.

“Electric Relaxation” peaked at No. 13 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart. The track was also one of the few Tribe songs to actually land on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 65.

The list of inductees is also highlighted by Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Kool & The Gang, and Jimmy Buffett, among others.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced the names of 16 artists who will be inducted in 2024.

The 2024 class includes A Tribe Called Quest , Mary J. Blige , Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Jimmy Buffett, Foreigner, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Dionne Warwick, MC5, Big Mama Thornton, Norman Whitfield, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Suzanne de Passe.

“Rock & Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”

To be eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an individual artist or group must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Four out of the eight inductees in the Performer category (Cher, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Frampton) were on the ballot for the first time.

Others who were nominated this year but not selected for the 2024 class include Mariah Carey, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinéad O’Connor, and Sade.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction will stream live on Disney+ on October 19, with the ceremony airing on ABC at a later date.

Maya Rudolph jokes that she only went to college because of A Tribe Called Quest

In a q interview, the snl alumna opens up about her family’s impact on her comedy.

a tribe called quest world tour

Social Sharing

When Maya Rudolph was a kid, she didn't think her musician parents were cool — except for one thing: their music was sampled on several songs by the hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest.

"I felt so cool because it was a band that I liked and they thought that my parents were cool," the comedy actor tells Tom Power in a Q interview .

Rudolph's mom, Minnie Riperton, was a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter with a five-octave vocal range. Her father, Richard Rudolph, is a musician and songwriter who worked with artists like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and The Temptations.

When Rudolph eventually met Q-Tip, one of the members of A Tribe Called Quest, she thanked him for sampling her parents' music — and sending those royalty cheques to them.

"That was always the joke that me and my dad would say: 'A Tribe Called Quest put you through college,'" the Saturday Night Live alumna says.

Though Rudolph's parents focused their careers on music, they also exposed her to comedy. It used to be common for a musician and a comedian to open for each other or do shows together. Her mom would often tour alongside comedians such as Richard Pryor, the Smothers Brothers and Flip Wilson.

"Comedy and music are cousins," Rudolph says. "They're the same language, but spoken in two different ways."

  • Q with Tom Power Jagged Little Pill at 25: How Alanis Morissette tapped into female rage and changed music for good

Rudolph even followed in her parents' footsteps before she started in comedy. She sang back-up vocals for the rock band The Rentals after she finished college. The band even came to Canada and opened up for Alanis Morissette a few times on her Jagged Little Pill tour.

"We did a lot of hacky-sacking with her and her band," Rudolph says.

Despite her musical inclinations and her very cool musician parents, Rudolph viewed music as something that was her parents' thing, not hers.

"Anything that comes from your house is embarrassing," she says.

Eventually, Rudolph admitted to herself that her parents are very cool.

She even pays homage to her mom and dad in the second season of Loot , the show Rudolph stars in and executive produces. In one of her character's scenes, audiences can hear A Tribe Called Quest's Can I Kick It? playing in the background.

Loot follows Molly Novak (played by Rudolph), who receives an $87 billion divorce settlement from her ex-husband. She now has to figure out what to do with all this money, and turns to her own charitable foundation to try and use it for good.

"This idea of creating a character who wants to help, but has been coming from a place of just spending the wealth and enjoying the wealth, has been a great opportunity to talk about things that are going on in the world," Rudolph says.

NEW YORK (AP) — Mary J. Blige,Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang and Ozzy Osbourne have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a class that also includes folk-rockers Dave Matthews Band and singer-guitarist Peter Frampton.

Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton earned the Musical Influence Award, while the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield will get the Musical Excellence Award. Pioneering music executive Suzanne de Passe won the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

“Rock ‘n’ roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement. “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”

The induction ceremony will be held Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. It will stream live on Disney+ with an airing on ABC at a later date and available on Hulu the next day.

Those music acts nominated this year but didn’t make the cut included Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, the late Sinéad O’Connor, soul-pop singer Sade, Britpoppers Oasis, hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim and alt-rockers Jane’s Addiction.

There had been a starry push to get Foreigner — with the hits “Urgent” and “Hot Blooded” — into the hall, with Mark Ronson, Jack Black, Slash, Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney all publicly backing the move. Ronson’s stepfather is Mick Jones, Foreigner’s founding member, songwriter and lead guitarist.

Osbourne, who led many parents in the 1980s to clutch their pearls with his devil imagery and sludgy music, goes in as a solo artist, having already been inducted into the hall with metal masters Black Sabbath.

Four of the eight nominees — Cher, Foreigner, Frampton and Kool & the Gang — were on the ballot for the first time.

Cher — the only artist to have a No. 1 song in each of the past six decades — and Blige, with eight multi-platinum albums and nine Grammy Awards, will help boost the number of women in the hall, which critics say is too low.

Artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they’re eligible for induction.

Nominees were voted on by more than 1,000 artists, historians and music industry professionals. Fans voted online or in person at the museum, with the top five artists picked by the public making up a “fans’ ballot” that was tallied with the other professional ballots.

Last year, Missy Elliott, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Chaka Khan, “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius, Kate Bush and the late George Michael were some of the artists who got into the hall.

New Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Foreigner will bid farewell to Missouri this summer

a tribe called quest world tour

In the sports world, fans rarely have a chance to see a star play after being named to their game's hall of fame.

In music, the opportunity remains rare but comes around a bit more often. Classic-rock fans will get that chance — at least three of them — starting this summer when newly-minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Foreigner swing through the Show Me State.

The hall's 2024 class was named Sunday; Foreigner joins the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige and more to be inducted in a future ceremony.

Foreigner's three scheduled Missouri dates are part of a farewell tour running through the end of 2024, and possibly beyond. Closest to home here in Columbia, the band will play the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia Aug. 8 with Maggie Rose. Tickets are $50-$60.

First though, the band will play Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in the St. Louis area June 18; Foreigner will also play Ozarks Amphitheater in Camdenton Oct. 4.

Before the band hits its final stride, here's a quick look at Foreigner, by the numbers.

Foreigner, by the numbers

1976: The year British guitarist Mick Jones formed the band in New York City.

1: The highest American chart position achieved by one of Foreigner's singles; "I Want to Know What Love Is," the band's only No. 1 stateside hit, topped the charts in 1984.

9: The amount of Top 10 hits the band scored in the U.S., starting with 1977's "Feels Like the First Time" and ending with "I Don't Want to Live Without You" in 1988.

2009: The date of the band's most recent album release, "Can't Slow Down"; AllMusic scribe Stephen Thomas Erlewine said the record "sounds like it could have been a hit in the late '80s."

2003: The end of star singer Lou Gramm's official run in Foreigner, though he has popped up and on stage with the band on a few occasions.

1: Number of original Foreigner members left: Jones is the only remaining founder, though several of the current members have been around for some time, including singer Kelly Hansen since 2005.

Jones' touring role has been limited for some time by Parkinson's disease.

"As to whether I get up on stage and perform hasn’t really been decided as yet," Jones told Billboard about the forthcoming Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony . "In some ways it might be nice just to be there to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy being inducted."

After failing to even be nominated in previous years, Cher, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne and Kool & The Gang will all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024, alongside repeat nominees Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band and hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest.

In a novel move, Frampton encouraged concertgoers to vote for him during his April 14 show at The Shell in San Diego by having the QR code for the ballot projected onto the large video screen behind him on stage.

Five other artists who were also on the ballot for the first time this year did not earn enough votes to be inducted, specifically, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Sadé, Mariah Carey and Sinéad O’Connor, who died last July. Also failing to make the cut for induction were two repeat nominees — Jane’s Addiction and the hip-hop duo Erik B. & Rakim.

Sinead O'Connor has died at 56. She is shown at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards L.A. Feb. 22, 1989.

Appreciation: Sinead O’Connor, dead at 56, was a singular artist: ‘I would have liked to be a priest,’ she told us in 2013

‘I would like to be remembered,’ she told us, ‘as a loving mother and grandmother. I’d like to be the rocking-est granny! I’d like to go out like (pioneering blues and rock singer) Big Mama Thornton.’

This year’s inductees were announced during Sunday night’s telecast of “American Idol” by Lionel Richie, a 2022 hall inductee, and show host Ryan Seacrest. The list of 2024 honorees also includes six artists who will receive the hall’s Musical Excellence and Musical Influence awards, two categories that are chosen by the hall’s in-house committees.

The 2024 Musical Excellence Award honorees include Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Jimmy Buffett (who died last September from cancer) and the pioneering Detroit proto-punk-rock band MC5, whose leader, Wayne Kramer, died of cancer Feb. 2. The final iteration of the group, which included San Diego guitarist Stevie Salas playing alongside fellow guitarist Kramer, toured in 2022.

This year’s Musical Influence Award honorees include England’s John Mayall and the late Alexis Korner, who in the 1960s jointly spearheaded the blues boom in the UK that fueled the launching of such bands as the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. At 90, Mayall appears to be the oldest of this year’s hall honorees.

The third 2024 Musical Influence Award honoree is the late Big Mama Thornton, whose galvanizing recordings of the songs “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain” greatly influenced the subsequent versions of those songs by, respectively, Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin.

Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording and are honored for their “originality, impact and influence.” Ballots are cast by the hall’s more than 1,000 voting members, which include previous inductees and an array of music industry professionals, including this writer.

In 2013, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame introduced it “fan vote,” in which the top five nominees that fans vote online for are submitted as one official ballot that is counted with the rest of the Voting Committee’s. The quantitative impact of the fans’ choices is minimal — accounting for about 0.3 percent of the total — but creates a fair amount of buzz.

This year’s two top fan-vote earners are Dave Matthews Band (with 586,745 votes) and Frampton, with 529,077. This year’s online fan voting was supposed to continue until Friday, but instead concluded April 15.

The hall’s final 2024 honoree, powerhouse music, film and TV industry executive Suzanne de Passe, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. It is named after the co-founder of Atlantic Records.

The announcement of this year’s inductees comes as several of them are battling serious medical conditions.

Osbourne, 75, rose to fame as the lead singer in the heavy-metal band Black Sabbath before launching his solo career in 1980. He suffered a serious fall in 2019, has since undergone four spinal surgeries and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003.

Fellow 2024 Rock Hall inductees Kool & The Gang will perform June 24 in San Diego at The Shell. Bassist and band founder Robert “Kool” Bell is the only surviving member still on tour with the group.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and will stream live on Disney+ and be available on Hulu the following day. An edited airing of the ceremony will be broadcast on ABC at a later date.

Cher may command the spotlight at the induction ceremony — should she choose to attend.

In December — two months before the 2024 nominees were announced — the 77-year-old singer blasted the hall for never having made her a nominee despite her having been eligible to be on the ballot since 1990.

“You know what? I wouldn’t be in it (the hall) now if they gave me a million dollars,” Cher said during a telecast of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

“I’m not kidding you,” Cher continued. “I was about to say something else. … I was about to say I’m not sh-ting you. I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”
