Dartford Crossing: Drivers stuck in three-hour queues after police incident

Drivers are stuck in three-hour queues as the southbound section of the Dartford Crossing from Essex to Kent is closed due to a police incident.

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge has been shut since shortly after 6am, causing a severe traffic jam on the M25 , National Highways said.

Essex Police said in a statement: “We’re currently dealing with concerns for the welfare of a man on the Dartford River Crossing.

“The incident was reported to us shortly after 6am this morning.

“Traffic is being held on the crossing as we work to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.

“We understand this action will impact on people’s journeys and we will provide an update on the situation as soon as we practically can.”

Southbound traffic is being diverted through the east-bore of the Dartford Tunnel.

This has halved the capacity of the tunnel, which is normally exclusively used for northbound traffic.

National Highways said the incident is causing a three-hour delay for southbound vehicles approaching the crossing, and a 90-minute delay for northbound traffic.

At 10.20am Highway officials said they are now in the process of reopening the QEII Bridge at the Dartford Crossing.

“We are now in the process of re-opening the #A282 #QEIIBridge southbound at #DartfordCrossing,” said National Highways on social media.

“The contraflow in the eastbore tunnel has now been removed.

“We’ll have you moving again as soon as we can. Thanks for your patience this morning.”

Live M25 Dartford Crossing traffic updates as lane closures cause chaos and queues

A broken down lorry on the M25 clockwise has caused two lanes to be shut and long traffic delays this morning (Tuesday, January 3). Reports of an incident were first made at around 10.15am on the QE2 Bridge from J31 A1306 to J1A A206 (Dartford).

The situation is causing severe delays around the Thurrock and Grays area with queueing traffic stretching back for four miles in addition to the lane closures on the bridge. According to INRIX, congestion is going stretching back towards J29 A127 at Romford.

Travel time is estimated to be 30 mins. National Highways have confirmed details of the incident after they posted a tweet on Twitter.

On the post, it wrote: "1 lane is closed on the A282 southbound QEII Bridge Dartford Crossing due to a broken down lorry.

"Recovery is on scene and about to clear the vehicle. There are 4 miles of congestion on approach causing 30 min delays above normal travel time."

Road cleared

New traffic reports confirmed the road is cleared after a broken down lorry caused severe delays and lane closures.

The lorry was cleared off the roads at around 11. 05 am.

Following the reopening of the lanes on the QE2 bridge, the latest traffic report on INRIX reads:

"Long delays and queueing traffic for four miles due to earlier broken down lorry on M25 QE2 Bridge clockwise from J31 A1306 to J1A A206 (Dartford). Congestion to about halfway back to J29 A127 (Romford).

"Travel time is 30 minutes. Lanes one and two (of four) were closed, traffic was held for five minutes at 10:55 to clear the cones, the lorry has been cleared from the bridge."

National Highways have confirmed on lanes have reopened.

This is after a lorry broke down on the QE2 Bridge.

According to the AA, traffic flow is extremely slow on the M25 in surrounding areas near the QE2 bridge due to the broken down lorry.

Traffic queues are reported to be stretching back four miles, but could increase as traffic was held at 10.55 am for five minutes as the lorry was recovered.
