Interview: Michael Dishman, Hawai’i Island’s Ecotour Guide of the Year

We're proud of our 3,000+ five-star reviews on tripadvisor.

Ona and Wehlan were great. Leigh did an amazing job of the intro to the Island and prep for our trip.

This place and the staff were amazing! Very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions we had. Wonderfully delicious lunch. Thank you to all!

We did the ride today and it was awesome. Rained last night so it made for more enjoyment if you know what I mean. Special thanks to our guides Zack and Casey. Thanks to Jae for the ride to and from with the commentary.

We did the "take on Razor experience" in Hilo and it was unreal. Our guides were Zach, Angel, Casey, Kenoah with our shuttle guide Shaneece and they did an outstanding job. Will definitely be taking out a Polaris Razors again soon when I come back.

Private and Custom Tours

Wasabi Tours Hawaii specializes in private and custom tours on the Big Island of Hawaii for groups of all sizes.

Whether you are a family or a large meeting and incentive group, we can create and tailor tours to your interest and needs.

Top Reasons to Choose Us

We specialize in small group tours.

Even though our spacious tour vehicles are equipped to seat 15 passengers comfortably, all of our tours have a maximum of 13 guests per vehicle. This allows you to enjoy the intimate setting of a smaller group, promotes more interaction between the tour guide and each guest, and allows us to take great care of you throughout the tour. And most importantly, it gives us the ability to do what large group or motor coach tours can’t –we visit more places in less time, and access areas that the larger groups won’t get to see.

We offer unique experiences and adventures

Whether you want to explore the whole island in one day or wander off the beaten path in a remote valley, we’ve got you covered! Our different tours and adventures are crafted to offer one-of-a-kind experience to suit the interest of visitors from all age groups and backgrounds. Each site we visit and route we take are tailored to reveal only the best of the raw and natural beauty of our fascinating island to the visitors.

We have the best professional guides in the industry

Our interpretive guides are professionally trained and State of Hawaii Certified to be the best ambassadors of Hawaii with years of experience guiding tours. They will tailor the tour to the capability and interest of the group, and create an interactive and educational experience full of interesting facts and stories of all things Hawaiian: the cultures, history, geology, flora, and fauna. Guests will find our guides friendly and entertaining, yet intelligent and knowledgeable. All of our guides are first aid and CPR trained. We also have multilingual English, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish guides on staff.

We use luxury and first class vehicles on our tours

Our luxury Mercedes Benz tour vans range from 11 to 14 seats and are customized for full-day tours. All the vans offer ample legroom and high ceilings for maximum comfort. Guests will enjoy individual seats with headrests, tinted windows, and air conditioning. Why settle for less when you can enjoy your once-in-a-lifetime trip in luxury and comfort?

"What a great night! We just came back from a night snorkel with enormous manta rays and it was magical! Nice boat, fantastic sunset, great people and some nice information about the mantas. We watched the mantas in a calm en quiet place with just 2 other boats, really relaxed and close by! We really loved our trip and would recommend Adventure X Boat Tours to everyone! Thank you Captain John and Lorraine for this amazing experience!! It was the best!!"

"Been on dolphin swimming and whale watching tours with Adventure X and every time they exceed our expectations. We always have a whale of a good time"

"WOW. My family and I went on the Manta Ray tour last night and we were all left speechless. It was by far the most amazing experience all 9 of us have had in our lives! It was so spectacular that I would pay to do it over and over again. We even had a few family members who were scared to go in the water, but the amazing crew put them at ease. Captain Casey, Jenna, and Kayla made our experience better than we ever could have dreamed. I have recommended this to every stranger I've passed since on the island, because everyone should experience this at least once!"

RATED #1 ACTIVITY IN HONOMU!

adventure tours big island hawaii

Everyone was so welcoming and answered all of our questions. This company is very organized and well run. Our guides gave clear instructions and made me feel very safe (I had never done this before and was nervous!). The first run was easy and helped you get the feel for zipping. The last run over the falls was spectacular. Highly recommend them!

Super friendly and welcoming staff! My daughter was a bit nervous about the big zip line, but the tour is designed to start with a smaller line and ends with the big one over the falls, which was perfect for her to adapt and really enjoy the last line. The location is very cool and the tour flowed like magic. A great day for the kids and me. Well done!

An awesome time with awesome people. The guides were excellent! They were hilarious and very knowledgable about the local history. Great guys with great recommendations of other spots to see and eat. The views are so worth it and you feel safe the whole time. I would say try it even if you don’t like heights, get out of your comfort zone and do it!

Perfect for your first time and beautiful no matter how many times you’ve done it. Nothing to do but sit and watch the beautiful scenery fly by! The hilarious crew does all the work! All of it. Great tour with free bananas! Flying over that waterfall was breathtaking! I'd definitely recommend this company to anybody looking for a fun daytime adventure.

Best guides ever! Their humor and good nature made for a great experience. These guys gave me all the tools I needed to feel safe and comfortable, and gave plenty of encouragement. The 7 line course was an excellent build up that gave me peace of mind and a slow build of courage towards the final zip over the waterfall. I couldn't recommend them more!

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

There are a limited number of paved roads traversing Hawaii's rugged landscape. While Backroads strives to find quiet roadways off the beaten track, many of this trip's routes include sections along highways with fast-moving traffic. You're always welcome to jump in the shuttle to avoid the busier roads.

In order to bring you the best of the Big Island, we spend more time shuttling on this trip than on many other Backroads trips. We want to make the most of your time on this beautiful and diverse island, and our itinerary—complete with shuttles—has been specifically designed to do just that.

Hawaii encompasses an astonishing array of climate zones. You should be prepared for a wide range of weather conditions during our stay near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including heavy rain and strong winds. The Kohala Coast also experiences powerful winds, which may make cycling coastal roads difficult or require us to alter our planned activities.

Kilauea Lodge is a fairly rustic property in a stunning location near Volcanoes National Park. Although clean and comfortable, the guest rooms are basic and not equipped with phones or televisions.

Hakalau Forest Reserve – We went out for a Hakalau Forest birding adventure with Gary. He was SUPER knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and was enthusiastic about showing us this super special place. Make Hakalau and HF&T your destination!

Eric H – February 2022 – Google Review

Maunakea Summit & Stars – This was one of the best trip excursions of my life! Seriously! Jason, our guide, was super knowledgeable, friendly, outgoing, and helpful. The view from Mauna Kea was breathtaking! And watching the sunset is almost spiritual. Our stargazing was phenomenal! We could see the flow of the lava against the clouds from the Kilauea volcano. The food and treats are super good! If you haven’t taken this trip — you need to!

Greg B – February 2022 – Tripadvisor

Hidden Craters Hike – Had the best day learning about the island and hiking. I loved every minute of this but would classify it as more moderate and it is not a stroll on a path. We learned from our guide Taro so much about volcanos and how they form and loved the lava tube. Took 4 of our teenage boys and they were so grateful for the experience. First trip to Hawaii and wish I could have scheduled more trips with this company. They are professional and top-notch.

L Gott – July 2021 – Tripadvisor

Maunakea Summit & Stars Giveback – First of all 5 stars to Jeff M. as the tour guide, extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We did the summit sunset and stars tour with reforestation and rehabilitation (Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative). We collected seeds of A’ali’i and learned a lot about natural native species that got pushed out due to invasive species. It was a lot of fun and learned a lot! The sunset was amazing and would prefer the tour even if I had access to a 4WD truck, learned a lot, entertaining and also stress-free. Some of the most beautiful colors and views, even a full circle rainbow. The guide Jeff had 2 telescopes and explained the stars, planets, constellations and more! Spectacular views and great explanations. We even saw shooting stars, satellites, Maui, active volcano glowing and more! The hot cocoa and cookie was a great addition. Highly recommend and if you can, consider the volunteer addition for the dry forest.

Kevinb – August 2022 – Viator

Twilight Volcano Unveiled – Volcano tour was amazing! The team had their private lava tube which was simply fascinating. Also spent a good amount of time at the national park going for multiple hikes and viewpoints. On top of it all, Adam our guide was prepared, king and knowledgeable which made the day.

Young K – 2021 – Google Review

Kohala Waterfalls Adventure – My husband, son and I went on the Kohala waterfall adventure during our vacation in Hawaii and it was the most beautiful hike/tour/adventure we’ve ever done. Our guides, Dane and Rob L were very knowledgeable; They educated us on the history of the waterfall, as well as the different fruits, plants, and wildlife. Their warm and friendly demeanor definitely was a plus. They really made an effort to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone on the tour. It was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation.

Hawaii Geo Tours are the best!

Wow! Fantastic tour of the erupting volcano!!! The guides are geologists and explained so much about the volcano and how all the Hawaiian islands were created. The pictures I got during the day, and especially at night were incredible! The food and winery tasting were good too. I’ve done this tour twice in the past year and recommend it highly! I wish I could give more than 5 stars!!! 🤙

Awesome adventure!

We couldn’t have made a better choice!!! Definitely the guides know their stuff, from history of the island and its people to the geological topics that kept me entertained throughout the trip. We just about went around the island in vip style, the guys were well known everywhere they took us as well as knew their way. Will recommend it to a few friends that are planning to visit the island, it’s a must in your itinerary and couldn’t have made a better choice in tour guide services

Well worth the time and money

David was an outstanding host and tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend this tour. You will see a ton, learn a lot about the island and enjoy a delicious lunch.

One of the best tours ever

What an excellent way to get to know the Big Island and learn about its unique place on Earth. Our tour guide Eric picked us up on time at our rented villa along with a number of other visitors and we proceeded to spend one of the better days on a tour of the island. Eric is one of the proprietors of the tour, is a degreed geologist and is truly an engaging and friendly person. The tour was excellent which combined both interesting sights and a tremendous amount of local knowledge about lava flows and local history. To say that this was worth the day spent would be to put it mildly. Even at twice the price, I would happily do this again and recommend the tour to anyone.

Spattering of lava at the viewing platform

Best Island Tour!

A must tour experience! Such an incredible day. What is unique about This tour, is how much you learn about the island formation and the flexibility in where he takes you! We traveled with friends and booked the VIP tour…if you can swing it, definitely put Geotours on your itinerary! Erik will not disappoint. You can see that he is passionate about the island and what he does. Mingled well with our group, lots of laughs, great energy and had a BLAST!!!

Very Best Geo Tour on the Big Island of Hawaii

Zane found his calling. He is incredibly well educated in geology, has traveled the world and knowledgeable about not only the local history, but the flora and fauna of the island too. And he is super personable and able to keep all 10 of interested for almost twelve hours of the day. We conversed about what we wanted to see on a big scale and he narrowed it to specifics based on weather, crowds and our groups patience. He was a saint. If you want to enjoy the very best island tour and get educated on the land and history, hire Zane and you will write the next five star review!

lava flow at volcanoes national park in hawaii

Highly Recommend!!

Zane was incredibly knowledgeable about the island! If you want to go on a tour with a geologist, this is the one to take!! As a privately owned company, he was able to hit all of the major island highlights as well as take us to places on the island that other tour companies don’t visit. We learned so much about the history of the island and the volcanos on the island all while having a fantastic time! HIGHLY recommend!!

Big Island ATV Tour

Ride With us into Paradise

Explore the rich heritage of Polynesia while driving your way through the Pacific Islands on your Big Island ATV Tour. Travel through time as you experience thousands of years worth of culture in an untouched Hawaiian jungle where ancient Hawaiians once lived, worked, and played.

On your adventure, you will drive through the villages of Hawaii, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa where you will enjoy the adventure of traditional hands-on activities with your Polynesian guides. Please note that if you choose to ride in a UTV (instead of an ATV), a guide will drive you.

Come on an ATV Big Island Tour with us. Scroll below to see a glimpse of your stops!

Island of Hawaii

We recognize the word “Aloha” which has become one of the most famous words in the world. Hawaii is also famous for its luaus. Luaus were born out of the religious taboo of men and women eating together in ancient Hawaii.

While making a short stop on your ATV, you can taste freshly prepared poi which is a traditional food made from the taro plant and is still eaten today at luaus.

Island of Fiji

Fighting was literally a way of life. The Fijian warrior did not rely on shield or armor, but depended rather on his well developed agility and alertness. While you stop in Fiji, you will be able to test your skills by throwing a traditional spear at its target. Also, enjoy the traditional Fijian game of pineapple smashing.

After being blindfolded and armed with a warrior club, experience trying to smash a pineapple on the ground. Don’t worry – the Fijians aren’t all fight. In fact, they are a warm and caring people with some exciting tales to share.

Island of Tonga

This is the place that is known as the ‘friendly islands.” Tonga is a Polynesian sovereign state, and has never been ruled by a foreign power and is made up of 177 islands spread over 500 miles.

At this stop, you will learn the mauluulu (a type of sitting dance while on your ATV). Also, learn how Tongans used wooden drums, or lali during welcoming and other ceremonies. How are your drumming skills?

Island of Samoa

The Samoan people know how to have fun, in fact, their sense of humor is known throughout Polynesia. As you will see, the traditional living quarters, or fale (houses), contain no walls and up to 20 people may sleep on the ground in the same fale. In Samoan culture, most activities are done together.

As you stop in the Samoan village, you will learn how to crack open a coconut using a small rock and have a drink of fresh coconut water. Refreshing and rewarding!

Ready for a Big Island Adventure?

We’ve made booking your Big Island ATV Tour and Polynesian Cultural Wood Carving Tour with Aloha Adventure Farms easy and hassle-free.

15 Unbelievable Day Trips in Hawaii You Need to Take with Your Family!

Are you planning your first trip to hawaii and want to know about cool adventures find out my top 15 hawaii day trips worth adding to your itinerary, this list of day trips in hawaii was written by hawaii travel expert marcie cheung and contains affiliate links, which means if you purchase something from one of my affiliate links, i may earn a small commission that goes back into maintaining this blog..

Aloha, parents!

If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii with your family, you’re probably already dreaming of the beautiful beaches, lush landscapes, and incredible adventures that await you.

As a Hawaii destination expert who’s visited these islands over 40 times, I can tell you that the best way to experience Hawaii is by diving into its day trips.

Whether you’re exploring Maui , Oahu , Kauai , or the Big Island , these 15 day trips will take your Hawaiian vacation from great to unforgettable.

Let’s get into some of the best family-friendly adventures Hawaii has to offer!

My Favorite Hawaii Day Trips

1. road to hana (maui).

The Road to Hana is not just a drive; it’s an adventure that takes you through some of Maui’s most breathtaking scenery.

Winding along the northeastern coast of Maui, this iconic highway offers everything from cascading waterfalls to lush rainforests and dramatic ocean views. Here are my top kid-friendly Road to Hana stops .

Image of wrapped banana bread in front of the Halfway to Hana sign

I recommend starting early to make the most of your day. There are plenty of spots to stop along the way, like Twin Falls for a quick dip, the black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park , and the Seven Sacred Pools (Ohe’o Gulch) at the end of the journey.

This drive is perfect for families who love to explore, but keep in mind that the road is winding and narrow in places, so go at a pace that’s comfortable for everyone. And don’t make these common Road to Hana mistakes !

Pack snacks, water, and don’t forget your camera—every turn offers a new and stunning view!

2. Haleakalā Crater (Maui)

If your family loves the idea of watching the sunrise from the top of a volcano, then Haleakalā National Park is a must-visit.

Known as the “House of the Sun,” Haleakalā’s summit is one of the most magical places to watch the day begin. The experience of watching the sun rise above the clouds is nothing short of breathtaking.

Check out this honest Haleakala Sunrise Tour Review by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of the Haleakala Visitor's Center at sunrise.

To catch the sunrise, you’ll need to make a reservation in advance and wake up early, but I promise it’s worth it. Or book one of these tours and leave the early morning driving to a professional.

If early mornings aren’t your thing, visiting during the day or at sunset is equally impressive (and no reservations are required).

The park is home to unique landscapes and rare plants and animals that your kids will love learning about. Just be sure to dress warmly—it gets cold up there!

3. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (Big Island)

One of the most exciting places to explore in Hawaii is Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. This park is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa.

My kids were fascinated by the chance to see a real volcano, and there’s nothing like standing on the edge of a caldera, feeling the heat from the earth below.

Find out what you need to know about visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of a mom and boy standing on a wooden boardwalk surrounded by sulphur banks in Hawaii.

Start your visit at the Kīlauea Visitor Center, where you can learn about the geology and cultural significance of the area. It’s closing for renovations in fall 2024 and will re-open tbd.

Then, head out to explore the Nakuku Lava Tube, take a drive along Chain of Craters Road, and if you’re lucky, see glowing lava flows from a safe distance.

Safety is crucial here, so be sure to follow all guidelines and keep a close eye on your little adventurers.

If you really want a cool experience, spend the night at the Volcano House where you can see the lava fields from your room!

4. Na Pali Coast (Kauai)

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most stunning places in Hawaii, and it’s a day trip that should be at the top of your list if you’re visiting Kauai.

The dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, and pristine beaches make it look like something out of a movie—literally, as it’s been featured in several films, including “Jurassic Park.”

Exploring the Na Pali Coast is just one of the many best things to do on Kauai on a budget recommended by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of a rugged coastline.

There are a few ways to experience the Na Pali Coast. For families, a boat tour is a fantastic option, offering up-close views of the coastline and the chance to spot dolphins, whales, and sea turtles.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can hike part of the Kalalau Trail, though this is best for families with older kids due to the trail’s difficulty. My kids were only able to climb the first mile when they were 5yo and 8yo but they still claim it’s their all-time favorite hike!

For a bird’s-eye view, consider a helicopter tour, which offers unparalleled views of this incredible landscape.

5. Pearl Harbor National Memorial (Oahu)

Visiting Pearl Harbor is both a powerful and educational experience, making it a great day trip for families. You can go on your own or book a tour .

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial honors those who lost their lives during the attack on December 7, 1941, and it’s a poignant reminder of the impact this event had on history.

The USS Arizona Memorial is a must-see, and I recommend booking your tickets in advance to ensure you can visit this popular site.

adventure tours big island hawaii

While you’re there, explore the Battleship Missouri and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum to round out the day with more historical insights.

This visit offers an opportunity to teach your kids about a significant part of American history in a setting that’s both immersive and meaningful. Just don’t make one of these rookie Pearl Harbor mistakes !

6. Molokini Crater (Maui)

If your family loves snorkeling, Molokini Crater off the coast of Maui is a must-visit destination. This crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater is famous for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life.

Exploring Molokini Crater in Maui, a guide featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids.

My kids were thrilled to see colorful fish and even a few sea turtles during our snorkeling trip.

Several tour operators offer snorkeling trips to Molokini , and most provide all the gear you’ll need. The crater’s calm waters make it ideal for families with children, and the underwater world here is simply stunning.

Just remember to apply reef-safe sunscreen to protect this delicate marine ecosystem.

7. Waimea Canyon (Kauai)

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon is a sight to behold. The canyon’s deep reds, greens, and browns create a stunning landscape that’s perfect for a day of exploration.

Image of a boy at Waimea Canyon on Kauai

My family loves visiting the various lookout points that offer incredible views of the canyon, and there are several hiking trails for those who want to get a bit closer to nature.

Don’t miss the Waimea Canyon Overlook and Pu’u Hinahina Lookout, where you’ll get some of the best views in the area.

If you have time, consider combining this trip with a visit to the nearby Koke’e State Park, which offers additional hiking opportunities and beautiful scenery. The Kalalau Overlook is pretty epic!

8. Kualoa Ranch (Oahu)

Kualoa Ranch is a place where adventure meets Hollywood history, making it a perfect day trip for families.

This private nature reserve and working cattle ranch is famous for being a filming location for blockbuster movies like “Jurassic Park” and TV shows like “Lost.” My kids loved standing in the same spots where some of their favorite movies were filmed.

adventure tours big island hawaii

There are plenty of tours to choose from, including UTV rides , horseback tours, cultural programs, a jungle trek , and the popular movie site tour .

The ranch also offers stunning views of the mountains and ocean (plus access to Secret Island ), and it’s a fun and educational experience for the whole family.

9. Lanikai Beach (Oahu)

If you’re looking for a relaxing day at the beach, Lanikai Beach on Oahu’s windward coast is a must-visit.

A vertical shot of a beautiful Lanikai Beach, Kailua in Hawaii, USA with a cloudy blue sky in the background

Known for its calm, clear waters and soft white sand, Lanikai is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It’s perfect for families with young children, as the water is usually gentle and ideal for swimming.

One of our favorite activities at Lanikai is kayaking out to the nearby Mokulua Islands. It’s a fun way to explore the area, and the islands themselves offer beautiful views back toward the shore.

Whether you’re kayaking, snorkeling, or simply lounging on the beach, Lanikai is a great spot for a family day trip. And I recommend exploring Kailua and Kaneohe while you’re in the area!

10. Waipio Valley (Big Island)

Waipio Valley , often referred to as the “Valley of the Kings,” is a place of immense beauty and cultural significance.

Steep cliffs surround this lush, green valley and is home to waterfalls, taro fields, and black sand beaches. It’s a place where you can truly feel the spirit of old Hawaii.

adventure tours big island hawaii

You can explore Waipio Valley by hiking, horseback riding, or simply taking in the view from the overlook. Personally, I recommend taking the Waipio Valley Shuttle for a really cool tour of the area!

The hike down into the valley is steep, so it’s best suited for older kids and adults who are up for the challenge. However, the view from the top is spectacular and worth the visit even if you don’t venture down into the valley itself.

11. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (Oahu)

Hanauma Bay is super famous for snorkeling on Oahu, and for good reason! It’s actually set in an old volcanic crater and is now a protected spot where you can see tons of sea life.

The water is calm and not too deep, which makes it awesome for kids to snorkel. You can spot lots of bright fish and colorful coral—it’s like swimming in a giant fish tank!

Hanauma Bay on Oahu in June

Before heading into the water, you’ll watch an educational video at the visitor center about the bay’s history and how to protect the fragile ecosystem. My family loves spending the day here, snorkeling and relaxing on the beach.

Remember that you’ll need to make a reservation in advance , as the number of daily visitors is limited to preserve the bay’s natural beauty.

12. Polynesian Cultural Center (Oahu)

For a deep dive into the cultures of Polynesia, spend a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu.

This living museum offers interactive experiences in several villages, each representing a different Polynesian culture. It’s a full-day experience if you want to check out all the villages AND do the evening luau.

Read this full guide to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawai by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of two boys posing at the Polynesian Cultural Center entrance with tikis.

My kids enjoyed learning traditional dances, trying out ancient games, and even tasting some unique Polynesian foods.

The center also offers cultural performances throughout the day, culminating in the spectacular evening show “Hā: Breath of Life.”

It’s a fantastic way to immerse your family in the rich cultures of Polynesia while having a lot of fun along the way. But, I do want to give you a heads up that it’s run by the Church of Latter Day Saints and most of the staff are BYU students.

13. Mauna Kea Summit (Big Island)

If your family is up for an unforgettable adventure, a day trip to the Mauna Kea Summit on the Big Island should be on your list.

Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing at 13,796 feet above sea level, and offers some of the best stargazing opportunities in the world.

Image of the snowfall at Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The summit is home to several observatories, and on a clear night, the sky is filled with countless stars that will leave both kids and adults in awe.

Reaching the summit is an adventure in itself. The drive requires a 4WD vehicle, and the altitude can be challenging, so it’s important to acclimate slowly.

If you have young children or anyone in your group with health concerns, you may want to stick to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station , located at 9,200 feet, where you can still enjoy excellent stargazing.

Remember to bring warm clothing, as temperatures at the summit can be freezing, even in Hawaii!

14. Island of Lana’i (from Maui)

If you’re curious about seeing another island from Maui, Lana’i is a really good option. You can easily take the ferry from Maui to Lana’i . It’s the ONLY ferry service in Hawaii.

I highly recommend doing a bit of research before you go to make sure it’s a good fit for your family.

adventure tours big island hawaii

The ferry lets you off near the beach (which is good for snorkeling) but it’s pretty far from town. So, you might consider renting a Jeep so you can explore the island or book a tour.

Another popular attraction is the Lana’i Cat Sanctuary. They have a shuttle service that will pick you up from the ferry.

If you visit during the winter months, it’s a cool (and affordable) way to see whales!

15. Island of Moloka’i (from Maui)

One of my personal favorite Hawaii day trips is flying over to Moloka’i from Maui! Mokulele Airlines has a flight that offers epic views of both islands.

Find out how to do a Maui to Molokai Day Trip by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of palm trees and the Halawa Valley on Moloka'i.

You’ll want to either rent a car or book a tour to see the island. There are only a few “attractions” on the island and the main town is pretty small.

But it has all the vibes of “Old Hawaii” and the scenery will take your breath away!

Hawaii Day Trip FAQ

Are these day trips suitable for young children.

Yes, most of these day trips are family-friendly and suitable for young children. However, some activities, like hiking the Kalalau Trail or visiting the Mauna Kea Summit, may be better suited for older kids or teenagers. Always consider your child’s age, physical ability, and interests when planning.

Do I need to book tours or reservations in advance for these day trips?

For some day trips, such as the Road to Hana, you can explore on your own without needing reservations. However, activities like sunrise viewing at Haleakalā, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, and visiting the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor require reservations. It’s best to book these well in advance to secure your spot, especially during peak travel seasons.

What should I pack for these day trips?

For most of these day trips, you should pack essentials like sunscreen, hats, water, snacks, and comfortable walking shoes. If you’re visiting areas with cooler temperatures, such as Haleakalā or Mauna Kea, bring warm layers. For beach days, pack swimwear, towels, and reef-safe sunscreen to protect Hawaii’s marine life.

Are these day trips safe for families?

Yes, these day trips are generally safe for families as long as you follow safety guidelines and use common sense. For example, at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, stay on marked trails and follow park rules. When visiting beaches, pay attention to surf conditions and lifeguard warnings. Always keep an eye on your children and make sure they’re equipped for the day’s activities.

How can we avoid crowds during these day trips?

To avoid crowds, try to visit popular sites like Haleakalā, Hanauma Bay, or the Road to Hana early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends, and visiting during the off-season (spring and fall) can also help you avoid the peak tourist rush.

Do we need a rental car for these day trips?

Yes, having a rental car is highly recommended for most of these day trips, as it gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Some locations, like Pearl Harbor, can be reached by public transportation or guided tours, but having a car will allow you to see more and venture off the beaten path.

Is there food available at these locations, or should we pack our own?

While some day trips, like those to Waimea Canyon or Kualoa Ranch, have nearby dining options, others, like the Road to Hana or Mauna Kea, require you to bring your own food and snacks. It’s always a good idea to pack water and snacks, especially when visiting more remote areas.

What’s the best way to prepare for a day trip to Haleakalā or Mauna Kea?

For Haleakalā, if you’re going for the sunrise, make sure to reserve your spot ahead of time and dress warmly—it gets very cold at the summit. For Mauna Kea, the summit is at a high altitude, so take it slow and spend some time at the visitor center to acclimate before heading to the top. Bring warm clothing, as temperatures can drop below freezing.

How long should we plan for each day trip?

Most of these day trips will take the better part of a day to fully enjoy. Plan for a full day for trips like the Road to Hana, Na Pali Coast, or Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Shorter trips, like visiting Lanikai Beach or Iao Valley, can be combined with other nearby activities if you have extra time.

Day Trips in Hawaii Wrap-Up

Hawaii is a treasure trove of incredible day trips, offering a mix of natural wonders, cultural experiences, and family-friendly adventures that will leave you and your kids with memories to last a lifetime.

Whether you’re driving the scenic Road to Hana, exploring the volcanic landscapes of the Big Island, or simply enjoying a day at the beach, there’s something for every family to enjoy.

As you plan your Hawaiian vacation, consider incorporating a few of these day trips into your itinerary. Each one offers a unique glimpse into what makes Hawaii such a special destination.

Remember to plan ahead, respect the environment and local culture, and most importantly, have fun exploring all that Hawaii has to offer.

Coffee in Hawaii is an Experience Worth Having

B eyond the beaches, coffee in Hawaii deserves your attention. If you love coffee like I do, there’s something unique and delicious for you in Hawaii. Exploring the coffee culture is just the thing. From the many plantations, custom roasters, and the region’s unique history, coffee in Hawaii is an adventure you’ll savor.

Things to Know About Coffee in Hawaii

I love coffee. Whenever I travel anywhere, I find local roasters and cafes. It’s less common I can get right to the source – the growers. Yet, Hawaii’s mineral-rich volcanic soil creates ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. It’s known for its coffee production and you’ll find plantations across the islands, each with its unique beans. I visited plantations on the Big Island and Kauai.

Where they Grow Coffee

There are coffee plantations across the Hawaiian islands where the diverse microclimates contribute to the complex flavors of Hawaiian coffee. Many coffee farmers focus on sustainable practices that protect the delicate ecosystem. The hospitality of the locals adds to the charm of a coffee tour.

The Big Island’s Kona Coffee is the crown jewel of Hawaiian coffee. Kona coffee, grown in the Big Island’s Kona district, is the most celebrated Hawaiian coffee. It accounts for just 1% of global coffee production, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after coffees worldwide.

Kauai Coffee : A popular plantation and well-known, affordable name brand. It is grown on Kauai but available in grocery stores across the United States.

Oahu and Maui: I haven’t visited these plantations yet. I’m told they offer unique flavors and experiences. I’ll get to them soon!

Hawaii’s climate gives the beans a specific taste. The beans are primarily Arabica, a variety that originates from all over the world, including Brazil, Guatemala, and Jamaica. Each varietal has distinct flavor characteristics enhanced by the climate and the specific roasting and blending process.

Coffee Tours and Plantation Visits

There are many coffee plantations in Hawaii. One of the best things to do is stop at them for a tour. You can also sample the coffee and buy some beans to take home.

A coffee tour in Hawaii is more than just a caffeine fix. It’s a journey through the heart of the islands. The rich history of coffee cultivation offers many stories. Passionate farmers tend the plants with care. There’s a story waiting to be discovered at every farm.

On plantation tours, you’ll learn about the beans they grow and their roasting process. You will also tour the farms, see the drying and roasting process and get samples. Some plantations offer free tours and others charge a small fee. Most plantations give free samples of the coffee. A few even offer cascara, a delicious tea made from cherry coffee pulp.

Many growers in Hawaii use drip irrigation systems to maximize water use. They also reduce the use of fertilizers with compositing programs and direct root application. These techniques help to improve soil health.

Taste of Coffee in Hawaii

Hawaiian coffee is characterized by its bright acidity, smooth body, and complex flavor profile. Depending on the specific region and variety, caramel, chocolate, and fruit notes often emerge. The absence of bitterness is a hallmark of high-quality Hawaiian coffee.

While Kona coffee is the most famous, a rich diversity of flavors is waiting to be discovered.

Fun Fact : The word for coffee in Hawaiian is kope, pronounced [ˈkope].

To truly appreciate the nuances of Hawaiian coffee, consider attending a coffee cupping session. This sensory experience lets you taste different coffees side by side, comparing flavors and aromas. Many coffee farms offer cupping sessions as part of their tours.

The Kona region of Hawaii Island is the most famous coffee region in the state. Its coffee is highly sought after. Kona coffee is known for being clean, mild, and pleasant, with a good aftertaste. The coffee’s rarity contributes to its high value. It is hand-harvested, ensuring quality. Everyone in the supply chain receives a living wage. Hence, it can command some of the highest prices in the world.

Some believe Kona coffee is the best in the world, except for Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Good Kona coffee lacks the bitterness of coffee from other parts of the world.

Fun fact: Contrary to popular belief, lighter roasts have more caffeine than darker roasts. Caffeine cooks away the longer you roast the beans.

Good Kona coffee costs $20 or more per pound. For example, some at Kona Joe’s on the Big Island can cost $110 per pound. There, the coffee trees grow on a trellis, like grapes. Maybe just try a cup.

What is Peaberry  Coffee?

Something you’ll learn while touring coffee plantations is the wonder and joy of the peaberry coffee bean. Typical coffee beans grow two at a time inside a coffee cherry. However, about 3 to 7 % of the time, only one bean grows instead of two. This bean is rounder, like a pea. They’re considered sweeter and more flavorful since they don’t share their flavor-building resources with a sibling. They’re also much more expensive, some averaging $50 a pound.

I found the peaberry coffee to be much less acidic and smoother than other coffee. Depending on how it was roasted, it was also less bitter in flavor, full-bodied, and almost chocolatey.

Fun fact : A Q-grader is a coffee sommelier who sets the standard for the coffee people drink. There are around 8,500 Q-graders worldwide, but I am not one of them.

A barista is a coffee expert who works in a cafe and specializes in coffee drinks, especially espresso. I learned that tidbit while visiting   Starbucks Reserve . It is a great place to sample unique coffee. You can also try coffee cupping closer to home.

Coffee Plantation Tours

A coffee tour in Hawaii is more than just a taste of the islands. It’s an immersive experience that connects you to the land. It connects you to the people and the passion behind every cup.

The plantation tours in Hawaii often showcase the entire coffee-making process. This includes growing and harvesting the beans. It also includes the roasting and packaging. Each also typically has a small cafe and retail shop. On the Big Island, where most growers live, you can spend days just driving around visiting plantations. You can also visit the hundreds of independent coffee farms.

Plantations I loved

  • Kauaʻi Coffee Company, also known as the Kauai Coffee Plantation , is the largest coffee farm in the United States. Established in 1897, it has over 3,100 acres dedicated to growing coffee beans. The company offers free and paid tours. Visitors can enjoy free samples. The cafe sells more elaborate coffee drinks and handmade ice cream.
  • Greenwell Farms on Big Island was started in the 1850s. Today, it is managed by the same family on 85 acres in Kona. They offer free daily hour-long tours highlighting the roasting and milling process, including the farm. Optional paid tours include a more immersive experience and coffee cupping (tasting).
  • Bayview Farm on Big Island is a lovely coastal farm on 25 acres. About 40,000 coffee trees were planted there in 1984. Twenty acres are dedicated to coffee, while the rest are used for other tropical fruits. The farm offers free daily tours and bean drying and processing. There’s also a great gift shop and plenty of free samples, including cascara tea.

Coffee in Hawaii gives a new meaning to “from bean to cup.” It will make your Hawaiian sunrises even more magical if you can believe it.

Enjoy the Aloha State’s unique terrain and volcanic legacy. Remember, it also gives its coffee a specialness you won’t find anywhere else. So, if you love your morning brew, take the time to sip and savor coffee in Hawaii.
