- Africa Overland Tours & Holidays
Overland travel is in our blood.
In 1988, two young backpackers gathered some friends and set off across the continent in a modified ex-council truck. They must have had fun, because when they got home they started a little company called Intrepid. These days, our itineraries are more polished, our vehicles are custom-built for overlanding and our leaders are passionate and expert locals, but we’ve still got that sense of adventure.
You’ll get off the beaten track, connect with local people and see more animals than you can poke your (respectfully distant) binoculars at. An African Overland tour is truly a drive on the wild side.

Our accommodation styles
The style of accommodation depends on the adventure you choose. When in cities and towns we often stay in hotels, but on the majority of Africa Overland tours you’ll be camping – sometimes in campsites that you’ll share with other tour groups, and sometimes in the middle of the wilderness (don’t worry, our leaders are well trained to protect you and it’s very safe!).
Campsites facilities can be basic. Sometimes the showers are cold, and some toilets are of the squat or hole-in-the-ground variety. You’ll be expected to pitch your own tent each night, but the two-person canvas tents provided are easy to set up and come with built-in mosquito screens.
Our Overland vehicles
Intrepid’s fleet of Overland safari trucks are custom-built for wildlife viewing and off-track adventure. While the seats are comfortable, the ride can be pretty bumpy at times. Most trucks have electrical plugs for charging phones and cameras, but we’ve made a conscious decision not to have Wi-Fi on-board (who needs the internet when you’ve got Africa to gaze at?). And there’s “natural air-conditioning” – meaning you’ll need to open a window for fresh air.
While we regularly service our trucks, the occasional breakdown may happen (don’t worry, your leader is well trained to deal with these situations). But that’s all part of the adventure.
Meet our leaders
If you're thinking of travelling on an overland safari through Africa with Intrepid Travel, but you're not entirely sure what it will be like – then take a look behind the scenes of a real overland experience and meet our leaders.
What crew will accompany me on an Overland tour?
Good things come in threes, right? On most Overland tours in Africa, you don’t just get one local leader, but a crew of three – a leader, driver and a cook! The leader is there to organise logistics, keep you safe and ensure the trip runs smoothly. While not being guides in the traditional sense, our African leaders – many of them hailing from Kenya and South Africa – have a broad knowledge of their destinations, a keen eye for wildlife-spotting and a passion for their homeland. At some points, we may also use specialist local guides to give you deeper insight into a place, especially when tracking and identifying game.
It’s the cook’s job to shop, oversee meal preparation and ensure the group keeps a high standard of hygiene. Your driver’s responsibility is to maintain the truck and get you from A to B safely. By the end of the trip, the trio of leader, driver and cook often feel like new friends.
Some Overland trips in Southern Africa have a smaller group size of maximum 16 people. On these tours, you'll only have two crew members with you – a leader and a driver. In these instances, the leader will help prepare meals. Check out the ‘Group Leader’ section of the Essential Trip Information to find out how many crew you’ll have on your trip.
What’s the group size?
You’ll be part of a group of maximum 22 people of all ages and nationalities, from all walks of life. That’s what overland travel is all about: sharing experiences with like-minded adventurers from around the world. On our longer combination trips, your crew and group may change halfway through. Be prepared to spend a lot of time with each other and to make some new friends; it happens a lot.
What are drive days like?
Africa Overland tours involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and many early morning starts. Some days we’ll drive for five, six, even nine hours at a time, although we take regular breaks. One of the beauties of overlanding is seeing changing landscapes and local village life roll by right outside your window, but not every traveller is comfortable with so much driving. Changes in weather, road conditions and traffic (or unexpected border and national park closures) can throw drive times out by hours, so it's important to have an open mind and a degree of flexibility. If you’re the kind of traveller who prefers a strict, set schedule, you might be better suited to one of our destination-based shortbreak adventures. Check the itineraries on our website for an approximate breakdown of drive times for each trip.
How do game drives work?
Most Africa Overland tours are geared around wildlife viewing. We often stay a few days in each national park, giving us plenty of opportunity to encounter a wide variety of animals. On these days, you’ll usually do two game drives a day – one in the early morning when wildlife is most active, and one in the early afternoon after lunch. Game drives often last 2-4 hours.
While we do use open-roof 4x4 safari vehicles on occasion (like in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater), most game drives are done in the Overland truck, which is specially built for safe wildlife viewing with big sliding windows. When we come across an animal, the driver will stop and you’ll be able to get out of your seat and move around the interior of the truck.
It’s important to know that an African safari is not a David Attenborough documentary. There’s no guarantee you’ll see every member of the ‘Big Five’, and we never veer off the marked trails to get a closer look at an animal. When we’re in their territory, wildlife comes to us. Whatever happens, you’re sure to experience some pretty mind-blowing stuff.
Am I expected to help out with tasks on the road?
On most Overland tours, you’re more than just a passenger – you’re part of a team. Your leader may split you into smaller groups and draw up a daily roster. You’ll then take it in turns to help with tasks such as cooking, shopping, washing up and cleaning the truck, although it’s not difficult work. Please come prepared to roll up your sleeves and pull your weight – it’s all part of the fun!
How do meals work?
When camping, breakfasts and most lunches and dinners are included. While at times you’ll be required to help out with basic cooking – chopping vegies, kneading dough – the cook overseas all meal preparations. Meals are tasty yet simple, made using local ingredients your crew will pick up along the way. Dinner might be pasta or a BBQ, but we also throw in some local specialties. Breakfasts often involve toast, spreads, eggs and tea/coffee, while lunch is usually a sandwich and some fruit; sometimes you’ll need to prepare a packed lunch if we’re going to be out on a game drive all day. If you have any dietary requirements please tell us at the time of booking, and remind your crew at the welcome meeting.
On drive days, we’ll usually make a stop at a market or shopping centre, giving you the chance to stock up on snacks and supplies. When heading into national parks for a few days we often take an esky with ice, so you can pick up some local beers or South African wine to enjoy by the campfire. We start each day with a supply of clean, filtered water for you to fill up your drink bottle. When staying in hotels, meals aren’t included, but your leader will recommend some affordable and delicious local restaurants.
How do the itineraries operate?
While we stick to the planned itineraries where we can, overland travel – especially in remote parts of Africa – is unpredictable. Closed roads, inclement weather or mechanical issues can affect the running of your trip. In those cases, there are plenty of other tried-and-true routes we can take. An open mind and sense of flexibility are key to enjoying your adventure.
Optional activities – such as bike rides, hot air ballooning and walking safaris – are dispersed throughout the itinerary. Please note that these are subject to availability, and that the prices listed are merely an indication. Ask your leader for more information.
How do we deal with money on the road?
One of the great things about an Overland tour is that many things are built into the cost of the trip – accommodation, transport, game drives, activities, community visits and most meals. You will, however, need your own financial supply for tipping, visas, personal shopping, drinks, laundry, meals when staying in hotels, optional activities and snacks for the road, so please factor this into your budget. We make regular stops at ATMs along the way so you don’t have to carry too much cash with you. Make sure you read your Essential Trip Information carefully so you know what’s included.
How do visas and border crossings work?
Many of the countries visited on our Africa Overland tours require visas for entry. Some are best obtained before you leave home, and others can be obtained en-route. Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller, although we’re happy to help with any questions. Entry requirements can change at any time, so check out the relevant consular websites for up-to-date information specific to your nationality. Visas can take several weeks to process, so it’s best to apply as soon as you’ve booked your trip.
When crossing the border between countries, your leader will explain what you need to do and will walk and talk you through the whole process, so there’s no need to feel nervous. Along with your passport, you may also need to present proof of your Yellow Fever vaccination (your doctor or nurse should give you a small booklet after having the immunisation), so make sure you bring it with you. If you’re purchasing a visa at the border, you’ll often need cash (in the local currency or in USD). Your leader will be able to give you all this information on the ground so you’re well prepared.
What should I know about health?
To fully participate in an Africa Overland tour, you’ll need to have at least a basic level of fitness. Long travel days, hot and dusty conditions, bumpy roads – overland travel can be challenging on the body. You’ll need to be physically able to help with camp chores and to climb up and down the steps of the truck 8-10 times a day. To choose a trip that suits your fitness level, please look carefully at the physical rating on our website.
It’s also a good idea to check with your doctor to see if any pre-existing medical conditions will affect your ability to participate in the trip, as we won’t have immediate access to doctors or medical facilities in some of the more remote parts of Africa. You’ll also need certain vaccinations, so make an appointment to see a travel doctor as soon as you’ve booked your trip. See the Essential Trip Information for more information about health.
How do I pack for an Overland trip?
When overlanding, it’s best to pack as lightly as possible. Although you won’t have to carry your bag over long distances, you’ll need to help load and unload it from the truck. On most trucks, your main luggage will be stored in a personal locker at the back of the vehicle, but in some cases bags are stored together in one communal compartment. Either way, we strongly recommend a backpack or duffel bag instead of a hard-framed suitcase. Lockers usually measure 26 inches long, 18 inches wide and 10 inches high, so keep your bag within those dimensions, and make sure it weighs no more than 20 kilograms.
You’ll also need a daypack to keep your water bottle, camera and other personal items (this is stored at your feet or in the overhead shelf of the truck). You can stock up on basics – toilet paper, soap, batteries, a small lock for your locker – when we stop at supermarkets along the way.
The clothing and equipment required will depend on your destination and the time of year. Even in summer it can get cold at night, especially when camping, so layers are always a good idea. Bring comfortable, durable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty (because they will get dirty!). We’ll supply the camping gear, including a basic ground mat, but you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. For more information about what to bring, check the Essential Trip Information.
While most Africa Overland tours are classified as Basix, for those less inclined to rough it, there’s a “glamping” option with our Comfort range of trips. On a Comfort trip, you’ll still need to be prepared for long, hot, bumpy drives in the truck, but you’ll rest your weary head in lodges and permanent tented camps instead of campsites.
Plus – you won’t be preparing your own meals, as they’re mostly included and provided by the lodges. Check out our Comfort trips in Africa below.
Combine your overland journey with another African adventure
Going on an Overland adventure might be a dream holiday, but there's plenty of other great things to see and do in Africa too. You can climb Mt Kilimanjaro , explore the lush rainforests of Madagascar or go on a Real Food Adventure through Morocco. Make your Overland adventure part of an even bigger Africa holiday on any of the trips below.

Karibu! - "Welcome" to the world of Africa travel
In 1979 we headed out overlanding Africa crossing the Sahara Desert in a London taxi travelling from Britain to Kenya. Absolute Africa, the budget overland company, grew from there with the aim to allow you to discover Africa.
Our choice of vehicle has changed from the original taxi and on our overlanding Africa trips we now travel the continent in big yellow overland trucks. At the same time we have retained the core idea of enabling overlanding passengers to experience the best price African trips.
Travel Feature
Reaching Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro, is attainable by most people of normal fitness levels, however in order to ensure that the climb is an enjoyable event rather than a tortuous slog some physical preparation is required. It is never too early to begin training for the climb, however to give yourself the best opportunity to build up stamina, strength and fitness your training should commence no later than 2 months before your climb.

What are Africa Overland Tours ? by Luke Hardiman
What are africa overland tours.
Travelling Africa overland is the best way for the free-spirited budget traveller to experience the excitement of true adventure travel, and unspoiled African scenery and cultures in remote places, within a specific set time.
Away from boring sanitised holiday locations, many of the tour stops lack the more civilised facilities of regular tourist traps, and there is also an element of unpredictability, as sometimes the scheduled route has to be altered due to external factors.
Different to any other kind of package tour holiday
Overland Adventure Travel is therefore altogether a different trip from the regular package tour holiday, as it goes beyond merely providing you with a bed and a bus. The journey itself is part of the destination, and this holistic approach to experience is the point of every trip.
Teamwork Makes the trip
Tour members do everything together: travel, dine, do chores, take part in activities, relax, interact and learn about one another's countries, and form a working team who will hopefully all become good friends by the end.
Africa Overland Tour Activities
Attractions include interacting with indigenous people and culture, watching wildlife and participating in the more adrenalised experiences available, such as whitewater rafting, climbing, diving, cycling, walking with lions or a swim with dolphins.
When not on the road or involved in these activities, travellers must assist with the daily responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning up and setting up or dismantling the camp and packing the trucks. The level of participation required will depend on what type of Overland Safari you choose to do. Most of the activities where you will be expected to assist with occur at daybreak and dusk so that we can utilise every daylight hour for the adventure side of the trip! It is important to note that we sometimes rise before dawn if we have to leave early for the next destination.
Your Tour guide or Trip Leader and support staff are well trained and highly knowledgeable about Africa and will assist your every need, but you also need to be keen to muck in, as they won't indulge too much laziness! However, there is also plenty of free time to sit around the fireside, play cards or board games, enjoy each other's company and discover more about Africa, shoot a few photos, jot in your diary or just chill under the stars listening to the sounds of the bush.
Things won't always run to schedule or as planned
On any Africa Overland Tour two things are for sure: one, that the days will not run 100% smoothly all the time and two, no two journeys will ever be alike. Roads could be closed or collapsed due to extreme weather conditions, mechanical problems could delay us, wild animals could invade the campsites or similar. TIA (This Is Africa) but we've seen it all before, so bear in mind that whatever goes down we'll get you through it safely and you will have the time of your life and a travel experience like no other on earth.
Are You Suited to Africa Overland Tours?
Whilst travelling through Africa has become easier in the past decade, it remains quite demanding physically, and thus the hectic schedule of a Camping Overland Tour tends to appeal to the younger, more adventurous personality type, between 18 and 35. However, recent years have seen an influx of adventurous older passengers as well as families. We have now catered for all in terms of the type of Overland Safari on offer.
The older crowd tends to enjoy the accommodated overlanding trips, and the younger singles or groups tend to enjoy the camping-orientated trips more, especially during university vacation times. These are fairly broad assessments though, and outside of normal holiday times, the passenger profile can be quite varied.
Age limit on Overlanding Camping
We do tend to set an age limit of between 18-55 years old though for the Overland Camping Tours, as in our experience, the often tough nature of Camping Overland Tours is unsuitable for people outside this age bracket. However, we do sometimes permit older passengers on the camping tours. As long as you are "Young at Heart". It's also important to note that on some tours children over the age of 6 are allowed. It's best to check with African Budget Safaris if this is a concern for you.
Although being relatively fit is usually a requirement for Overlanding, a patient, friendly nature and a sense of adventure, when dealing with situations such as a truck stuck in the mud, a stampeding buffalo or squatting behind the lone bush in the veldt, is an advantage.
Nevertheless, as a big component of every trip is the social aspect, we can almost guarantee that everyone will click, as most people who gravitate toward African Overlanding trips tend to have similar interests and a shared outlook on life. For the Camping tours whilst we do get couples and groups of friends travelling together, passengers are most often single and the ratio of males to females is usually an even split, augmenting the fun social dynamic. Camping trips can take up to 28 passengers, although the average is usually slightly less.
The Size of Your Africa Overland Tour Group
Accommodated trips are usually capped at about 18 people and for Exclusive Overland Trips the group maximum size is 16. Around half of our passengers hail from English-speaking nations (Canada, UK, USA, Australia, NZ etc.) and the remainder from Asia and Europe.
Maintain a Positive Attitude for Best Results!
A last word of warning: whilst on the majority of trips most nights will be at the very least spent in a relatively safe, well-equipped campsite; there will be times when a hot or even cold shower or a chilled or even warm beer might not be at hand. The weather can often be inclement or searingly hot and you will have to put up with long drives, bouncing slowly over bumpy, barely recognisable roads. The inevitable unforeseen occurrences that can only happen in Africa can really test you, so a positive disposition is probably the most important requirement for any Overland trip.
Types of Africa Overland Tours on offer:
No matter your age or character African Budget Safaris will be able to match you with the perfect Africa Overland Tour. We have carefully categorised the Overland Safaris we offer into the following categories. All you need to do is decide which category best suits you and check out our website for the list of options in each category on offer.
Camping Africa Overland Tours
As the name implies camping overland tours involve travelling in Africa in an Overland Truck and sleeping in two-man canvas dome tents along the way. There is nothing quite like camping in Africa. With the wide-open skies and sounds of the wilds as a backdrop, this is a great option for those clients who wish to connect with Africa on a ground level. Camping Overland Tours are the best-priced tours available in Overlanding.
Camping tours generally appeal to the younger traveller on a tight budget. The average age is between 18 - 35 years of age. Although we do not have an age restriction on these tours we do suggest to clients over the age of 55 to consider an Accommodated or Exclusive overland Safari.
You will be expected to actively participate in the tour to ensure the smooth running of your adventure. The maximum group size is 28 persons on a truck.
Accommodated Africa Overland Tours
Accommodated Africa Overland Tours are aimed at clients who want to experience the thrill of transversing Africa in an Overland Truck but at the same time receive a level of comfort above that of a camping tour. The accommodation we make use of is usually in the form of 2-3 star lodges, bungalows, guesthouses, permanent tented camps, hotels and occasionally Backpackers.
In Southern Africa we make use of double/twin room accommodation at each place, ideal for couples. Single rooms are available for clients travelling alone but a Single Supplement will apply.
For East Africa, we occasionally will make use of accommodation that requires 3-4 clients per room. However, it is possible to upgrade at most places to a private room at an additional cost paid for by you on arrival. We cannot guarantee this however and it will depend on availability. The upgrades cannot be pre-arranged and you are only able to enquire on arrival. For most accommodated tours covering East Africa, there is no single supplement cost. The level of participation on accommodated tours is generally restricted to packing of the truck and assisting the cook in the occasional meal preparation. The Maximum Group size is 18 on the truck.
Exclusive Africa Overland Tours
This form of Africa Overland Tour would appeal to clients who are looking for a more exclusive African experience. To guarantee this the group size is restricted to 16 on the Vehicle. The Vehicles themselves on the whole have additional facilities like an onboard fridge for example that allow for that extra bit of comfort.
It is important to note that we make use of a combination of camping and fixed accommodation along the way for most tours. The tents are large spacious well well-ventilated tents with canvas mattresses provided on most occasions. When we stay at fixed accommodation it usually is at 2-3 star lodges/guesthouses/bungalows and hotels.
It is important to note that there is an age restriction of 55 years on Exclusive Overland Safaris. Sometimes exceptions are however made and clients over the age of 55 are permitted on these tours, depending on the health of the client and the particular route of the safari.
By virtue of the smaller group size, on several tours, it is possible to access areas that are not open to the public or larger overland groups. It is also important to note that a lot of the Local activity options available at each place we stop at will be included in the price of the tour.
The level of participation on Exclusive Africa Overland Tours is still expected. On the whole, this type of overland experience is for a more refined traveller wanting to tackle Africa on a ground level but with that bit more exclusivity included in the tour offering.
Family Africa Overland Tours
Tours that are specifically set aside for travel with children. The majority of these tours follow the same structure as a camping overland tour with camping being the most common form of accommodation. An active level of participation is expected. The key difference between a Family overland tour and the other 3 categories is in the distance travelled between destinations. With Family Africa Overland Tours the distances are kept to a minimum to ensure that the children spend as little time as possible confined to the truck which generally ensures happy children.
Travelling with other children from different nationalities ensures a great cultural education for all concerned. The maximum group size is 28.
Africa Overland Tour Trucks and Equipment
All Africa Overland Tours are done in specially designed Overland Trucks. Each one has been customized to ensure utmost safety - and whilst they are not air-conditioned tour buses with onboard restrooms, they do feature cushioned seats for a pleasant, comfortable ride. In some cases, the Trucks have forward-facing seats, some with seats facing one another with small tables, and some with bench-style seating. (Please note however the Truck specifications will depend on the Tour Type you choose).
All of the trucks carry the full stock of camping and cooking necessities, large water tanks, and long-distance gas tanks and are equipped with cassette decks (into which we can plug your CD or MP3 player) and interior/exterior lights.
As there is limited space for baggage on every tour vehicle we suggest you pack as lightly as possible (see what to bring). Finally, although the vehicles are regularly serviced, we will also potentially have to endure the odd breakdown as the African conditions often push the trucks beyond their limits. As we've said, you need to expect this, and patience is a prerequisite, as we solve the problem or wait for spares etc. Finally, whatever you do, don't call the vehicle a bus or the crew bus drivers; they are truck drivers alright!
What you need to check before the start of your Overland Tour:
Passport and visa info.
Ensuring you have all the required documentation for the trip is you're responsible. The last thing you want to do is hold up the tour because you have neglected some important bit of paperwork or rubber stamp (and indeed, the tour leader will not wait for you and you might find yourself dumped at some forgotten border post).
Make sure your passport expires more than 6 months after your departure date and try to ensure you have at least one page open for each country on the tour itinerary. (Note: some countries will not let you in without at least a couple of blank pages, so make sure your passport is not too full, especially if you are planning on travelling further in the region after the trip.)
Depending on what nationality you are, visas are obtainable at most border posts. You must double-check this with the consulate of each nation though, well before your departure and obtain the necessary visas if need be. We also strongly encourage you to make copies of your passport, keeping one on your person and handing the other to the tour guide. If you have more than one passport it is important that you only use one to enter and exit countries or you might be denied entry or exit at a later stage.
Health and Vaccination Info
The twin threats of disease and danger are everyday realities in Africa. One of the biggest killers remains Malaria, which is endemic to most parts of Africa. Mosquitoes are most active around dusk and dawn, so make sure you wear long-sleeved tops and pants and apply plenty of insect repellent to their favourite places to bite: ankles, wrists and neck. Also, check with your GP regarding malaria tablets before you leave.
Make sure you get all your shots
You will also need to make sure you get the correct vaccinations for the countries you plan to visit. Most will require you to get a jab for Yellow Fever. You'll get a certificate for this, which like your passport, you should copy and bring with you (some home nations require you to show this when you return). Other possible vaccinations include Typhoid, Meningitis, Tetanus, Diphtheria and Hepatitis A & B. Whilst these injections are not compulsory, all these diseases are prevalent and precautions are advised.
Another affliction rife in Africa is of course AIDS. Fortunately, whilst there is no shot for this, condoms are widely available for those who might need them.
It is important to inform us of any medical conditions you might be suffering from or medication needs (e.g. asthma, diabetes) as we are often a couple of hundred kilometres from the nearest hospital.
Even if you are in otherwise healthy, if you begin to feel ill on a trip, please let the Guide / Tour Leader know immediately as they might have to make a plan to get you medical assistance. Most time it will just be your body reacting to the rigours of the trip or mild germs or bacteria but it's better to be safe than sorry.
All Overland tour vehicles carry a basic first aid kit but travellers will usually be asked to replace any items they take from it. Therefore it is important to bring your own emergency kit, stocked with the following recommended items: anti-diarrhoea pills, headache tablets, anti-septic ointment, plasters, sterile dressings, sterile strips, water purification tablets, anti-histamines, sun/after-sun cream, lip balm, eye drops, mosquito/insect repellent, moisturiser, rehydration salts and sterile wipes.
To prevent the spread of disease we supply of anti-bacterial liquid for washing dishes and cutlery (make sure you do this thoroughly if it is your turn) and antibacterial soap for the washing of hands, so apply liberally and wash them often.
Insurance Matters
You will not permitted to join any tour without some form of medical insurance and will be required to furnish us with the specifics of your policy before departure. Make sure your insurance covers air evacuation as most hospitals in Africa are very basic and you may have to be lifted out. Also, make sure your insurance covers injury from extreme activities such as river rafting etc. if you are planning to partake in these.
What to Take
We advise you pack your personal items in a sturdy backpack (it is best if this has a solid internal frame) and would rather you didn't bring a conventional suitcase as these are impractical for Overlanding. Include a small daypack to cart around everyday items.
Clothing to bring
Note: try not to bring synthetic clothing which is uncomfortable to wear in warm climates. Otherwise, we suggest the following minimum:
- Warm anorak/jacket
- Two pairs of jeans/cargos
- Two pairs of shoes (one pair of trainers, one pair of hiking boots)
- Sandals (strapped sandals are better than slip slops)
- One tracksuit
- Two pairs of shorts/skirts
- Four t-shirts
- Two long sleeves
- One thick sweater
- Boardshorts or swimming costume
- Underwear and socks (including at least one pair of thick socks)
- Sun hat (that covers your entire face and neck)
- Sarong/kikoi
- Light raincoat/windcheater
- Gloves (to protect you from stinging nettles and keep you warm on cold nights)
Other items to bring
- Sunglasses and watch (make sure these are inexpensive though)
- Sleeping bag & mat (plus a mosquito net and groundsheet if you plan to sleep outside)
- Water bottle
- Torch/batteries
- Toiletry bag
- Washing soap (biodegradable), pegs and clothesline
- Ziploc bags
- Scrubbing brush
- Camera/film/memory cards
- Universal socket adaptor
- CD /MP3 player
- Books/magazines
Safari Budget
Local payment.
These must be made in US dollars (USD) in equal measure by all passengers on the morning of departure or at the Pre Departure Meeting held the evening before. These funds go into a communal kitty, which provides for meals, accommodation, entrance into parks/reserves and some highlights.
Please note that the Local Payment price might go up slightly, but we will inform you if this occurs.
Optional activities on Africa Overland Tours
You will be provided with a list of optional activities to take part in on the tour that you can book on the day or along the way with your Guide. You must include these when doing your budget. These include adventure sports such as bungee jumping or river rafting (we only use the safest, most reliable operators).
Most additional activities are optional, depending on your budget and personal requirements (not everyone has to bungee jump!).
Daily budget
Other things you might want to spend money on include local restaurants, tips and shopping. Though credit cards are widely accepted we recommend you bring cash, most advisably USD. A budget of at least USD20 a day for things like cool drinks, alcoholic beverages snacks etc. is about right. Please note that tipping is encouraged, depending on the service level and activity anywhere from USD 1.00 (housekeeping staff at lodges for e.g.) to 5.00 (gorilla tour guides, for e.g.).
Emergency amount
Always make sure you have access to a decent amount of money, in case of an emergency.
Africa Overland - On the Road
Drivers, cooks, guide/ tour leader.
On average each trip has three crewmembers, one each of the above. The drivers and cooks are usually from Southern or East Africa and the guides/trip leaders from Africa, Australia or Europe. Whilst the latter are primarily there to make sure the trip runs smoothly and are not necessarily experts on Africa, they will be happy to share with you their experience of the region. In some difficult circumstances, the guide or trip leader will often have to make hard decisions and whilst some of these might not be popular with everyone in the group, their decision is binding and final.
Fellow travellers (the group)
Unsociable or messy fellow travellers are rare and not tolerated well and if someone selfish is causing problems for you please let your guide know or speak rationally to the individual. However, if you pull your weight and or your utmost to be aware of the needs of your fellow travellers you should have no problems and make some good friends along the way.
Participation on Africa Overland Tours
Your involvement in key aspects of the tour is expected. The level of Participation will be determined by what type of Overland Safari you choose. Regardless of this fact there will be some form of participation required. Participation might take the form of washing up, unloading your gear and putting up and taking down tents. However, your help assisting wherever else it might be needed will be appreciated and will also allow the crew more time to focus on the fun aspects of the tour.
Food on Africa Overland Tours
All fresh food is treated with an anti-bacterial spray. The crew will sort out the catering aspects for breakfast, lunch (usually a picnic) and dinner, but you are encouraged to get involved if you are handy in the kitchen. All crockery and cutlery is provided by the tour so please look after it.
Photography on Africa Overland Tours
You may, within reason, ask the guide to stop if you would like to take a photo. The truck will also stop at key viewing points along the way for this purpose. When taking pictures of people always ask their permission and respect their privacy if they decline (some believe cameras steal souls!).
Make sure you have adequate film and/or memory sticks as these are not available in most of rural Africa and you will be confronted with a million photo opportunities, and that your camera bag is dustproof. Powerpoints to recharge electronic items are available at some of the campsites, but extra batteries are still recommended.
Above all a yearning for adventure and a good sense of humour will ensure you have a fantastic time in Africa no matter what type of African Overland Safari you choose.

What our customers say
Just wanted to say thanks for your help in organising our amazing honeymoon in Africa. We had a great time and had really good luck with our animal viewings thanks to our fabulous guide/driver on our Safari, no one else we spoke to seemed to see 5 leopards and 3 cheetahs (on top of numerous lions) over 2 days in the Serengeti. I have attached a few of our favourite photos from the trip (Although I am sure you have seen plenty of these!). We will be sure to recommend you to any friends we have planning any trips to Africa in the future! Thanks again!

Hi Leisha! Thank you for the welcome message. Obviously I am not caught up with my workload or my email. I very much enjoyed my Vic Falls activities. I took a sunset river cruise, went canoeing, attended the Boma Dinner and Drum Show and visited Vic Falls. I liked the Chobe Safari Lodge and those activities. There were many animals along the river which made the river cruises better than the game drives. My favorite was the Sango Safari Camp. The staff and the accommodations were both exceptional. I went on three game drives and one Mokoro river tour. We didn’t see many animals but the staff made the most of it. They were knowledgeable, friendly and excellent chefs! The food was outstanding! I like this property very much. It turns out that there was too much water in the Delta to see a lot of animals. It was really wet making animal viewing tough. Fortunately I like birds and there isn’t ever a shortage of those. I very much appreciate this package you put together, especially on short notice and with restrictive dates. You did a fantastic job! There was a great deal of flying with 10-12 hour stopovers both ways and several flights both ways. I definitely wouldn’t do that again but I doubt that if would be necessary if my dates weren’t restrictive. All in all it was an awesome experience!!!Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Hello Gelle! We have returned safely and yes, we all had a great time! We did not meet any troubles. The flight transfers from Harare also went smoothly. It was very nice to see Zimbabwe with all the interesting past and current history. Our guides Tembe and Laban – Zimbabweans- were excellent. - Mokoro-trip – fantastic, with the setting, boat trip and the guides. - Vic Falls – a great time with lots of activities – elephant ride, bungee, rafting, sunset cruise etc. Laban organized some of the stuff. We got T-shirts! - Matopos – a great experience, Lovely camp site, Ian was a fantastic guide! San-history, walking safari with rhinos, the scenery etc! - Great Zimbabwe – very interesting, fascinating! We also had a lovely time in Mozambique at the Archipelago Resort /150USD per night for large bungalows self-catering, also with a lovely restaurant at the place. But so few tourist… both in Zimbabwe and Mozambique – we hope better days for these wonderful destinations will come. We all agreed that the overland-truck concept suited very well for a group of families like ours (with children approximately 10 and above) and is certainly something we would recommend to others. Very easy and convenient, better than driving all these long distances in separate cars on our own. Combination of camping and hotels were great (all good hotels!). We hope we will be able to go in another journey in a few years. Thanks for great organizing and help!

Hey Gelle! We are (begrudgingly) back in the US and trying to get back in the work groove. I miss vacation life! Everything was incredible, thank you. We really appreciate all of your help in making our vacation so wonderful and easy. Specifically, there were a lot of moving parts to this trip which we didn’t know how to organize or schedule. With time I’m sure that we could have managed it but as busy professionals we don’t have the time. Having you educate us on those pieces and then handle all of the logistics with them and the transfers between them was invaluable. We enjoyed simply knowing that everything would be worked out so we could focus on enjoying ourselves. We will definitely consider working with you again for our travel needs.

Hi Leisha and Gelle Talk about timing. You send an email enquiring about our lost bag, and I am staring directly at it and its contents all over our dining table as I picked it up from the airport today. Egyptair facilitated its return via Emirates Air. I don’t know how they got it from the Cairo Airport. At the advice of the Australian Consulate in Cairo, I had engaged a lawyer to try and determine what requirements they needed to release the bag into the custody of my authority. They CC’d me in on all the email correspondence and they were getting the run around from the airport. I don’t know how it happened, but we are extremely grateful. Perhaps the airport thought that I was a real pest and just gave up and decided that I should have back what is rightfully ours. We are both very grateful for the efforts that you both made on our behalf in trying to get our bag back. We fully accept responsibility for losing it in the first place, but we never thought that once the bag was identified that we would have so much trouble getting it back. Your efforts, and those of others, really add to the absolutely amazing experience that we had on our travels. I know that I have expressed it many times and you may be sick of it, but we really do appreciate the efforts that you both went to in organising the tour that you did for us. Your advice and genuine efforts to make it a great experience for us was second to none, and something that we will cherish for a long time. I would like to stay in touch as we will definitely be back to South Africa at some stage. I am not very good at Facebook, but if you have an account, I would love to have you both as a friends. I hope that you and your families are both well, and that business is booming. I am definitely spreading the word on our African experience, probably to the point where people are avoiding me. Kind regards David Rock from Australia

We had a most excellent adventure! Thank you! We saw every animal on the “Big Seven” list and so much more! We soared in the hot air balloon over the Serengeti and had a fabulous breakfast. The Masai tour was so interesting, the people were so welcoming. Our guide Doc,with Drifters, went out of his way to make my 60th birthday a real celebration! It was amazing. The second half in Botswana and Zimbabwe had a few challenges. Kenya Air lost our luggage on our way from Zanzibar to Nairobi to Johannesburg. We had to go to the delta with just what we had on the plane with us! Our guide Joe with Drifters, And the staff at the lodges tried to help as much as they could in getting us stuff to buy,,borrow and share to get us through! People on the tour were so very generous in sharing too..being out in the bush was very exciting. Drifters did everything they could to help us get them back. But they wanted 500$ to get them to the delta. We said no & come to find out they didn’t even have both bags. KenyaAir only sent Joan’s anyway! Which Drifters got to the lodge. We did ok..couldn’t get our bags until Maun ...6 days into our tour! Joe got us to the airport in Maun and my bag was there! We did good though in the bush…we saw so many animals in so many places. The delta was an amazing place. We learned so much… The four nights in the bush camp in Moremi National Park was probably the wildest time we spent seeing animals. We took the plane ride over the delta, saw a breading herd of elephants cross the Chobe River with little babies. We walked to Victoria Falls National Park. Took a game drive into Stanley Livingstone National Park and saw 4 black rhinos & Last but not least by any means…at 60 and 58 years old…my sister and I white water rafted the mighty Zambizi River!! Another dream come true! We couldn’t walk or move very well for 3 days…but we did it! Thank you for planning such a fabulous 32 days! We will never forget! Ann

WOW Gelle is amazing. After planning a wedding, planning a holiday was the last thing we wanted to do. We had been talking to one of our friends who was also thinking about going to Africa and told us that they had been talking to Gelle Richie from Go2africa who was based in South Africa. We emailed Gelle to see if she could help us and we got a reply back within hours asking us a few questions on what we wanted to do, time, price range. The only things that we really wanted to do was see the big 5, some camping and trek with the Gorillas within a 6 week period. Not knowing much about Africa we asked Gelle what she would do. So Gelle organised us 21 day TransKalahari Adventure where we saw the Big Five and amazing landscape. From there we went to Kenya and Tanzania were we camped in the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro crater. Now this is where Gelle come in, two things i have told everyone that is thinking about visiting Africa is have a travel agent based in Africa and the other is only have Gelle to do it for you. While we were on our way back from Tanzania to Nairobi - Kenya we got a email and phone call telling us about the fire at the Nairobi International Airport. Our flight was the next day at 1240pm. Gelle gave us updates via emails and mobile phone. Having Gelle giving us information we felt comfortable that we still had our flights. Gelle also was in contact with our next tour in Uganda giving them updates so everything would run smoothly. Also at the start of our trip we had our bags go missing at the Australian end. We let Gelle know just to give a update. Gelle was right on the case ringing the airport giving us updates via emails, this was all done outside of office hours, some time 11 pm at night. Gelle thank you so much for helping us see and experience Aftrica. We will be telling everyone that has been thinking about Africa to do it and go though Gelle at Go2afica.com. The only thing we had wish we could of done was to meet Gelle face to face. Thanks again! Josh and Mel Watton

10 Days Kenya Family Lodge Safari to Masai Mara & Beyond
Planning - The trip was tailored to our wishes with minimal back & forth from landing to taking off out of Nairobi Accommodations – A mix of Camp & Lodges but all of them were great and either at the entrance of the Park or within the Park itself Driver – Sammy was an excellent driver and knowledgeable. Tireless considering the travel from park to park and safaris both early morning and afternoon. The car was well maintained and we had no issues for the 9 days of our safari considering the long distances and off piste Everything was smooth and very well organised end to end and I would have no hesitation to use Exciting Africa Holidays for any future trips such as Tanzania or else.

Tunisia Discovery, Small Group Tour
This trip is a fantastic way to see a lot of the country in a short amount of time. I loved the sights and the pace. Our guide, Mohamed, and our driver, Jamal, were both amazing. Mohamed provided lots of information and really went out of his way to make sure we were having a wonderful experience throughout the trip. There were optional excursions as well, like a visit to an oasis, a visit to the Star Wars village, and a camel ride in the desert. The three of us in our group chose to do all of the optional trips, and we enjoyed them a lot. I'd recommend going on any optional trips that are offered--the cost is reasonable, and it's a great way to see even more. Although most of the time was "tour time," we did have a bit of time on our own, too, so that was nice. I'd recommend this tour to anyone who is planning a visit to Tunisia. The mix of sights is great, and you will get a nice overview of a lovely country!

Kingdom of Egypt - 8 Days ( Cairo , Aswan - Nile Cruise - Luxor ) & Sleeper Train Round Trip
This was a really fun trip for my family (2 kids ages 13 and 11). Our tour guides, especially “King Mina”, were very personable and knowledgeable. We learned so much about Egyptian history and I am inspired to learn more. There are several early mornings but it is well worth it. We had several hours cruising on the Nile one day which was a great chance to recuperate.
South Africa: Family Cape Adventure
Highlights of Tunisia, Small Group Tour
Ali is a very safe driver. But he is also very amazing and very expert to organize everything for the satisfaction of the customer. Me and him we spoke everyday about the itinerary and he did his best to arrange everything. Particularly about the visit of the museum of the Sousse that it was scheduled on monday 1st may. But this wonderful museum (the second most important in Tunisie after the Bardo museum) is closed every monday. For that we moved very early from Douz to included the visit of the archeological museum in Sousse on sunday afternoon before the last entrance. During the itinerary we added also other short visits in Nefta, ecc. In term of Mohamed, the tour guide, he is enough expert.

Africa Tours – Travel Africa overland safari, an adventure of a lifetime
African Trails has been running African overland camping safari using overland trucks to take groups of people around the whole of Africa since 1980. Read testimonials from previous travelers. We run trips from 5 day game park tours to 41 week Trans Africa overland enabling us to cover the whole of Africa. From north to south and west to east. With over 60 African adventure tours; covering 26 countries. With departures every month, you’ll find the right safari for you.
The Best Africa overland tours
Travel by overland safari truck is the safest, most friendly and cost effective way to have an Africa camping tour. On our big Trans Africa and Cape Town to Cairo Nile Expedition.
We go to places where public transport is unreliable, roads are rough, and finding accommodation can be difficult. Safari in Africa with African Trails and when you join our trip with your backpack you will find everything you need on our well equipped expedition truck.
Safari Overland Trucks
Late model Mercedes Benz and Scania, with Euro 4, fuel efficient and enviro-friendly motors with ABS braking and air-ride suspension give a smooth ride.
Our overland tour trucks have comfortable coach seats, with a wide aisle for leg room and space; a great place to socialise and to see the sites.
Heavy duty overland trucks allow us to get to those hard to find, rugged, out of the way places. Dirty and dusty roads with potholes and corrugations are no hindrance in our adventure tour off the beaten track to remote detonations.
Our Most Popular Trips
Our overland trips are so different to the usual game park safari to the Masai Mara in Kenya, the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. Or Etosha Pan Namibia, or one of the seven natural wonders of the world; Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Instead of a short visit to game parks that you can book through any travel agent on the high street at home, on our African overland camping safari we visit the game parks and all the sites and sights in between.
Starting a trip in Cape Town is a popular choice, a great city for a food safari.
We see African villages, towns and meet the people of Africa in Africa. In East and southern Africa you can take a sample of the best game parks in Kenya and Tanzania by going on our 15 day Kenya Tanzania Game Parks to Zanzibar. Travel further afield on our 21 day Nairobi to Victoria Falls. Or take in the whole region with an 8 weeks Gorillas to Cape Town.
Waiting for a Camel Train to Pass
A snapshot of a day on an Overland Trip
Travelling through Africa, Asia & South America by safari truck is an experience in another world. Early starts, something new around every corner of the road. Each day’s different. That’s the beauty of an overland trip You could be spending an afternoon by a lake or driving along a dusty road complete with bumps and potholes.
Most nights are spent at campsites
In most campsites you can charge your equipment, wash clothes, and have a cold drink at the bar. Meanwhile, the cooks of the day are busy lighting the fire, and starting dinner. W ith nights watching the stars and the best nights sleep you’ll ever have; by the campfire, under the stars. Trip Life.
Big Trips – Trans Africa, Trans Asia, Cape Town to Cairo overland route

Our relationship with nature
Instagram: vickoz, stage six – moscow – on the way overland uk to nz.
If you’re new to my sustainable (?!) journey across the world, here’s a menu to help you find your way: https://ourrelationshipwithnature.com/overview-overland-uk-2-nz-without-flying-eleven-stages-in-fifty-days/
For fellow travellers who might notice errors and omissions, please add your comments. In fact, all comments welcome!
The Moscow Metro is similar to other metros in my experience. You buy a ticket. (There’s often an English speaking window at the station.) You wave the ticket at a machine. You find your line. You get on the train. You get off and change to the next line. You get off at your stop. You find your way to the surface, point in the right direction and walk towards your destination.
BUT! Moscow Metro IS different! The stations are the People’s Palaces! They are GORGEOUS!
Advertising came along with the World Cup. The video screens were put into each train so that it would be possible to see every game even if you were commuting. In fact, you could sit in the warm trains and watch if you wanted. Now there are ads. And funny cat videos. And screens are appearing in the middle of the platforms in the People’s Palaces.
The station names were unfamiliar and written in a different alphabet. I was deeply grateful that underneath the Cyrillic the familiar (to me) Latin alphabet spelled out those words or I do not think I could have found my way to my hostel. The streets were quiet as I walked the 10 minute stroll, houses and buildings set back from the road. Little traffic. Autumn leaves clinging on. People in warm coats, scarves and gloves. October. It was nearly winter. Nearly dusk. Mid-afternoon.
Strawberry Duck was a lovely building. Like the city I had experienced so far from the Metro, and the little park on the way, it was quiet and orderly. The interior designers had been given free rein and the flavour was elegant, quirky Prado.
Deep blue walls transitioned down the long hallways into mulberry, then into a kind of mustard, giving an impression of opulence and soft dignity. The art pieces scattered around were light-hearted, an origami duck lampshade, a collection of watercolours showing inviting places to sit with your friends perhaps and many prints and paintings featuring ducks in amusing poses.
Downstairs, the kitchen and common areas were hard-hit-back designer brick inlaid with cool shapes and atmospheric dim lighting.
As well as the deep colours throughout there were wallpapers of bold florals that matched the decorative noveau splashbacks in the bathrooms. You could pay for 45 minutes of private bathroom but the shared spaces were cleaned regularly – in fact there was no time when I didn’t see a cleaner somewhere nearby. The reception staff were very kind to me – the oldest woman they’d seen in Strawberry Duck ever, I imagine! Most of the girls in my shared room were young and, as I went to bed, they fussed over their make-up and outfits preparing for a night on the town. The beds were curtained off with a deep green faux velvet, adding to the quiet style. Everyone had a locker but many of the girls seemed to be between houses, bringing suitcases, hangers and boxes of clothes. There was a lot of packing, repacking and some emotional phone calls going on. But quietly. Real owl and sparrow divide. Definitely in the sparrow tribe, me. Though, solitary. Just an unidentified LBB, then.
Next day dawned. First things first. Get onward travel organised. Find Real Russia . Ah, happy memories of London ! Was this going to be straightforward?
Thought I was lost for a moment. I walked around their block, not making sense of the map and their street not coming up on maps.me. I asked one lady who pointed me off in the wrong direction (we were actually just near the building) and another who steered me correctly with lots of words but we nodded and smiled and I said, ‘Spasibo’ a lot. Another young woman looked at my crumpled piece of map and, fearing I wanted money, I suppose, cut me dead and steered away. Made me think how I have treated people in need in the past.
Lena and the two girls gave me my ticket with a small ceremony. ‘Do not bend the ticket!’ And they let me charge my phone. I would not bend the ticket.
Back to a little cafe near my hostel
and a walk around the pond.
There were beggars, people with their hands out in the shopping strip and in the tourist area, just by Resurrection Gate . This is modern Russia. I gave some coins to a man with no feet and there was a strange circular place like a coin fountain, where if you threw money over yourself, presumably depending on where it landed, you would get the wish of your dreams. A random man picked up some of the coins with a collecting stick. He wore no badge of accreditation. Could just have been his turn.
On our walking tour we heard the story of a young woman who did just that, and as she stood and contemplated her wish, a young man, bearing an armload of long-stemmed red roses raced to kneel before her and propose. ‘Of course,’ said the guide. ‘We can only hope she knew him beforehand.’
Our lovely Free Tour of Moscow guide, Iryna, happened to be late. I spotted her preparation at the bus stop in front of the meeting place, the sculpture of the two fellows who invented the Cyrillic alphabet . She put on her red scarf and microphone and bouncy stage presence. Then made an entrance as she swept up the steps and called us all together into a group with such merriment she sounded like she was twelve, giving an Eisteddfod speech. She was well into it by the time her assistants arrived with the red umbrella. Perhaps she was on edge because everyone had chosen to be late that day?
I found it difficult to engage for some reason. It might have been my state of mind, the tone of her voice or even the subject. Russian history in a nutshell was incredibly hard to digest; overwhelming and unsatisfying. I guess it was me. We went up to see a beautiful swirl of green, white and red old church that is usually unavailable for tourist viewing. But today the street was open.
Then over to Saint George which stands proudly at the entrance of the new Zaryadye Park .
This site has been haggled over ever since Stalin wanted to build the Eighth Sister there. (Guess he settled for Warsaw?) Now, after years of debate, it is a place for the people, entertainment, museums and cafes.
We walked through the roof garden to the observation bridge that is not a bridge. It is a lookout, a hang out, a stretch over the River Moscow that does not go to the other side.
We looked at one of the Seven Sisters that looks exactly like the Palace of Culture in Warsaw and then we turned to look at the Kremlin and St Basil (which is a clump of nine chapels squashed into one).
Irena told us of the Romanoff Museum and the Moscow History Museum side by side in the little valley and assured us a visit to either of these small places would be very rewarding. Next time. There is a LOT to see in Moscow.
Once in Red Square , the tourist area felt unreal and arranged so conveniently it was difficult to take seriously. I began to feel I was in a theme park or a film set. It’s possible I have been a tourist too long.
St Basil, of course, the speakers’ platform , the Kremlin walls and tops of buildings therein, the State History Museum and the massive GUM shopping centre . I am sure it would be possible to spend a week just seeing museums. I was looking for the post office …
The square itself was packing up what had been a gastronomic festival, many little stalls and bright pot plants were folded with a bang and pushed away towards trucks. Beside the super shopping centre full of high level labels is a street already decked with sparkling Christmas twinkles, getting ready for the winter markets I suppose.
Stalin was removed from Lenin’s mausoleum . There’s now a bust nearby. Our guide made a couple of daring remarks about Stalin that would have had her arrested for making them and us arrested for hearing them. She showed us the unbalanced front of the Four Season’s Hotel , the architect apparently too frightened to check which design Stalin had signed off on. Now either side of the building is noticeably different. (But you can’t really tell from the photo below!)
She added the tale that when the Metro Engineers met with Stalin to discuss the different options the lines would take he left a coffee stain on the map. Which is why there is a brown circular line.
It may be a joke but the terror he inculcated was certainly real. They say not to speak about Stalin to a Russian for you do not know what their family stories may be. That sounds like Franco in Spain . At least there has been a reckoning with Stalin – Moscow has been de-Stalinised .
Red Square is surrounded by history and story and I found it really is overwhelming to be there.
I was keen to join the Metro tour. As a train afficionada – or at least a fan of tågskryt – I felt my journey onward should be my focus rather than history. We all had receivers with ear pieces which meant our guide could speak quietly and keep us all connected without having to wave flags or chickens on a stick. Of we went, down into the metro system to hop on and hop off the trains.
Alex showed us photos of some of the murals that used to include Stalin. The big Mother Russia with a plea for peace around the world is impossible to imagine with Stalin up in the middle of that, where the big MUP is now, don’t you agree?
The Moscow Metro was one of the last to be built in a major city. Mainly, according to Alex, because the people were religious and superstitious. Why would you choose to dig down closer to the devil? Finally, there was a dramatic day of gridlock in the city. No horse, tram or car could move so it was decided to build the People’s Palaces. Read this excellent blog post for more information .
The tunnels were built just in time for WWII. Each station was used as a bunker and each had a different purpose. The first one Alex showed us, Bibliotecka Lenina , was used as a library. He showed us pictures of people sitting at desks, studying or attempting to continue with their work while the bombing raged overhead. The economy does not stop with war.
Revolution Square Station features sculptures notable for their shiny patches. Each group of sculpture was repeated four times across the platforms. There was the family, the sports people, the man with the dog – and each one had a part to rub to bring good luck – the dog particularly. Before I heard this I carefully patted the mother’s shiny shoe. This would bring either love or heal a broken heart. Perfect.
Apparently when sitting exams, students must exit their train, pat each of the four dogs over the platforms and enter the train going the other way and they will pass their exams. For sure. As we admired and rubbed our bits, the commuters definitely did reach out and pat the dog or rub the golden rooster, everyone smiling as they did so. It was not that they were superstitious! They did it for fun, for habit and maybe … Alex pointed out it paid to be careful which bits you rub. Some might bring you bad luck. Not superstitious at all, then.
I am sure these magnificent spaces must influence regular commuters. I loved the peace and tranquility there. Apparently buskers have to undergo a strict audition process. Once granted space, they have that time to themselves. There is no competition setting up amplifiers nearby and they are unmolested in their performance. Is that the best way for cut-and-thrust, the best will rise above, life-hurry-scurry and bustle? Or does it show respect for the artist’s value?
We finished the tour near the theatre district. Unmissable. The Bolshoi .
I found it hard to believe I was in Moscow! And next, on to Beijing. Wow. That idea felt fabulous and awe-inspiring. It felt like I’d entered the portal of hard-drug travel. Went through the gate in Warsaw, I reckon. Comfort zone got a bit smaller. Went back to hostel. Time to get organised.
Tatiana, my Warsaw-Moscow train companion , WhatsApped me to ask what else I intended to see in Moscow. I told her I’d done the walking tour and the Metro looksee and added I didn’t really feel the urge to run around and see everything. She asked, then what was the point of my visit? I said, ‘To get to the other side’. My main aim was to stay calm, make everything as easy as possible for myself and get to the train on time. Moscow was the first place where I hadn’t managed to find a post office, nor post cards. Signage outside shops was indistinct. I think it would probably be worth a few language and cyrillic lessons before visiting next time. But for two days sight-seeing? I made do.
I did a load of washing, fed myself and aimed to finish two blog posts before I left the land of wifi. Poor young lady from Korea, just arrived and bleary lonely and tired, wanted to chat. Turned out she had recently been to Taichung, one of my impending destinations. She showed me her photos where she looked happy and alert. She did not seem happy now. I said I was very sorry but I really had to push on with my work. She listlessly turned away but kept drifting around. I typed, uploaded and corrected as fast as I could. Sorry for the mistakes that got by!
I managed to extend my hostel stay by half a day. My train left at 23:55. I could stay in my room, have the use of all the facilities (shower, wifi) until 21:00 at which point I packed up and went to reception. I took some time to observe the beautiful full moon. How auspicious was that? Dasha remembered to give me the all-important form to show the police where I had been staying. And I remembered to get her to print me the little hand-drawn map of my hotel in Beijing. She then wrote out her phone number and email and invited me to visit her and her family in Saint Petersburg! What a darling. We exchanged Instagrams so I hope to see her in that platform. Once I leave China, of course.
Luckily, the Avocado Café , just around the corner, was open to 23:00. Back I went for poppy seed rolls and mango coco icecream with a double espresso to keep me on my toes. I gazed happily at the pretty coloured lights changing over the flat Clean Pond before heaving up the packs and strolling ten minutes up to the number one metro line, Chistye Prudy , three stops to Komsomolskaya , the nearest to Yaraslavsky Train Station .
It was almost too easy. I congratulated myself on clever hostel booking.
Quite a few folk in the waiting area. I surreptitiously interviewed them in my mind. Was she going to China? Would I have to share a compartment with him? Did she look like an intrepid traveller? As soon as my platform number was announced, I left the stinky banana on a chair and whisked off to platform three and Pekin!
First impressions. Cold. Coal dust. I’m the first one in my carriage. The beginning of six days, one hour and four minutes on the train.
There was no keycard.
