Ag + art tour of york county returns june 10-11, 2023.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. (MAY 24, 2023) — The nation’s largest free self-guided tour is back in York County for the 11 th year. The Ag + Art Tour of York County will take place June 10-11, 2023, with more farms and artisans than ever before. The Ag + Art Tour began as a single county tour in York County and has grown to be a 13-county event that happens each year attracting more than 85,000 visitors since 2012. The program is recognized as a national example of rural revitalization, farm and art collaboration, farm experience, and agricultural education.

Ag Art 2023

“The Ag + Art Tour of York County has grown from 11 tour sites and 25 artisans to 28 sites and more than 79 artisans in 2023,” said Melanie Cooper of the Arts Council of York County. “People from all over travel to our state to learn more about farming, the arts, and the communities they are in. Many of the farms that joined the tour in 2012 still participate today, and many of the artisans return year after year to demonstrate their craft and sell their goods."

Take a trip along York County’s country roads to visit 28 tour sites during the 2023 Ag + Art Tour. More than 79 local artisans including painters, weavers, bakers, potters, quilters, fiber and fabric artists are on location at participating tour sites during the Tour, showcasing and selling their work, creating a unique, blended visitor experience of both agriculture and art. Be sure to pack an empty cooler to fill with fresh, locally-grown produce. Many farms will host family-friendly activities including hayrides, farm tours, and opportunities to check out barnyard animals. Tour stops include family farms that cover a diverse spectrum of production including fruit and vegetable, livestock (protein, dairy, and/or fiber), on-farm distilleries/breweries, commodity crops, timber, and historical farming operations, farmers markets, and art galleries.

Learn about agriculture and art during 2022 South Carolina Ag and Art Tour

The 2022 South Carolina Ag and Art Tour is May 14 through June 26.

South Carolina residents can learn where their food and fiber come from, as well as enjoy the sights and sounds of local art and music when the 2022 South Carolina Ag + Art Tour kicks off May 14.

Will Culler , tour director and member of the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service Agribusiness Team , said the free self-guided tour gives people an excellent opportunity to see first-hand where food comes from, watch artists in action and purchase their works, enjoy the melodies of local musicians and learn more about rural life.

Will Culler

“This tour began in 2012 as a way for people to learn more about local agriculture and local artisans,” Culler said. “We work with volunteers from a diverse spectrum of organizations in each county to design a tour that truly reflects local flavors. We encourage everyone to plan a tour of some of our state’s best homegrown and handmade experiences.”

Examples of artisans include painters, potters, weavers, quilters, acoustic musicians, artisan bakers, value-added producers and more. While the tour is free, there may be charges to purchase food, beverages, and farmer’s and artisan’s products, as well as participate in some activities. All state and local regulations regarding COVID-19 will be followed.

Ten counties are included in this year’s event. The self-guided tours take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Tour dates, counties and contact information are:

Colleton County . David Smalls, [email protected]

Lancaster County . Stuart Graham, [email protected]

Charleston County . Stefany Beals, [email protected]

Kershaw County . Catherine DeLoach, [email protected]

York County – East . Melanie Cooper, [email protected]

Lexington County . Vickie Davis, [email protected]

Richland County . Wendy Broman, [email protected]

York County – West . Melanie Cooper, [email protected]

Fairfield County . Brad Hoffman, [email protected]

Chester County . Courtney Lee, [email protected]

The tour takes place rain or shine, Culler said, adding sites may close if there is a threat of severe weather as the safety of visitors, farmers and artisans is the first priority. Participants are discouraged from bringing dogs as the tour sites are working farms and dogs can present food safety and livestock challenges. Service animals are allowed as needed.

FOR ARTISANS

ag and art tour york county

FOR TOUR SITES           FOR ARTISANS         RESOURCES

Thank you for your interest being an artisan vendor on the South Carolina Ag + Art Tour! By sharing your talent and time you are helping to not only strengthen the connection between producer and consumer, you are helping to grow South Carolina's art-economy!

ARTISAN CRITERIA

An Artisan for the purpose of this program is defined as an individual that makes hand crafted products without the use of kits, commercial models and whose primary components are not manufactured. Examples of artisans include but are not limited to painters, potters, weavers, quilters, acoustic musicians, artisan bakers, value-added producers, authors/writers, etc.

Artisans will be located at Tour Sites and can sell their products. Farmers Markets are tour sites but we do not place artisans at these locations as they have their own rules and regulations for participating.

All artisans (including bakers and value-added food producers) must hold, and be prepared to present, any applicable permit or license required to sell your product in South Carolina as well as in the county and municipality hosting your Tour. Artisans can participate on multiple weekends and can indicate the weekend(s) of their choice in the application.

The Ag + Art Tour County Planning Teams will make every effort to place artisans at their requested locations, but this placement cannot be guaranteed. If multiple artisans select the same location, priority will be given to artisans who will participate on both days of the Tour (rather than one-day-only); to artisans who are local to the host county; and to artisans who have not no-showed for the Tour in a previous year. Assignments will also seek to provide for a diversity of wares and activities at each site.

Artisans who register to participate in the Ag + Art Tour and then no-show without cause or communication may not be selected to participate in the Tour in future years.

ARTISAN RESPONSIBILITIES

As a participating South Carolina Ag + Art Artisan, you agree to:

  • Participate during the designated time/hours of the tour.
  • Engage visitors through demonstrations and/or performances.
  • Connect with your Tour Site prior to the tour to introduce yourself and plan your set-up. Use our brand guide to promote the tour.
  • Follow all COVID-19 related mandated protocols.
  • And most importantly, have fun!
