Air Traffic Controller Announce First Tour Since the Pandemic

The indie rockers from Boston, known as Air Traffic Controller, are hitting the road for the first time in nearly four years. The 9-date trek will allow the band to showcase tracks from their latest self-released album, Dash .

“We took our time making  Dash  — no shows, just writing and recording. That was our choice,” says ATC leader Dave Munro. “Then the world stopped: no touring, no nothing, not a choice! We finished just as things were getting back to ‘normal,’ and now that  Dash  has been out there for months, our fans have had some time to absorb it. This is good!”

Written mostly before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dash is the fifth studio album by Air Traffic Controller. The album, released in November 2022, features the lead single, “20,” based on Munro’s experience as a U.S. Navy air traffic controller.

“When I was 20, I moved from the barracks to an apartment with two fellow air traffic controllers,” he recalls. “Getting outside the confines of the Navy base was a life-changing event. I was finally able to live out my late adolescence, and just put on a uniform and go to work like everyone else. I was writing my first songs, pursuing my career in aviation—things just seemed to be going well.”

The band’s limited run kicks off on July 13 in Denver, Colorado, making stops in Kansas City, Madison, Wisconsin, and Chicago before wrapping on August 19 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

“We have weathered the changes in and around this band, and we’re coming out stronger,” Munro adds. “The best way to show our fans our gratitude is in person, to give every bit of ourselves to the folks who stuck with us through it all, and build it back up.”

For private or higher licensed pilots, come join us for an educational tour of the Minneapolis Air Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) aka "Minneapolis Center".

At the ARTCC - see how they see you! You will have an opportunity to interact and ask questions with an actual controller that is providing the tour, and learn more about how their world and systems work. You will learn how communicating with Minneapolis Center improves safety especially for dealing with weather and helping with traffic/ collision avoidance. The insights you gain will make you more comfortable and proficient whether you are VFR flight following or flying IFR.

Please arrive 15 min early to sign in at the Minneapolis ARTCC center in Farmington MN: 512 Division Street, Farmington, MN 55024.

Please budget at least 2 hours to attend this tour. You cannot leave early.

You must be 18 years of age and older, and must bring and present a government I.D. on arrival at the ARTCC.

No photography is allowed at the air traffic control center, and there may be restrictions at the airport.

Any international persons joining the tour must be signed up at least 2 weeks prior (10 business days) to complete a mandatory background check.

• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be registered for Selective Service, if applicable (Required for males born after 12/31/1959) 
• Be younger than 31 years old before the closing date of the application period (with limited exceptions)
• Have either three years of general work experience or four years of education leading to a bachelor’s degree, or a combination of both
• Speak English clearly enough to be understood over communications equipment
• Be willing to relocate to an FAA facility based on agency staffing needs

Think you've got what it takes to be an Air Traffic Controller? Keep reading to learn what you can expect from the application process and training to the hours, pay, and benefits of an exciting new career. 

The 2024 application window is open April 19-22, 2024.

The application process can take 6 months or longer. Applicants must complete these steps in the following order and cannot continue unless the previous step is met:

• Apply to the vacancy announcement meeting the basic qualifications mentioned above. Reference the ATC Application Checklist .
• Pass the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA) and achieve a score within a certain percentile. You will have up to 3 1/2 hours to complete the test in person at an approved testing facility. 
• Drug testing 
• Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI2)
• Class II Medical Exam/Physical
• Fingerprinting 
• Federal background check

Entry-level applicants must complete required training courses and spend several months at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. After graduating the academy, individuals are placed in locations across the country and must gain 1-3 years on-the-job experience before becoming a certified professional controller.

Controllers work full time and some work additional hours. Many of our facilities operate continuously (24/7/365), where employees work day, evening and night shifts, along with weekends and holidays.

The salaries for entry-level air traffic controllers increase as they complete each training phase.  The annual salary for more advanced controllers varies with the location of the facility, the complexity of the airspace, and other factors.

As a federal employee, air traffic controllers receive a benefits package that rivals, if not surpasses, those offered in the private sector - with a variety of insurance, retirement, leave, and flexible spending options for employees and their families.

• I’m applying based on education:  Copy of official/unofficial transcripts. 
• I’m applying based on a Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI):  Copy of official/unofficial transcripts and recommendation letter or endorsement certifying they have met the CTI requirements.
• I’m applying based on previous experience as a federal employee:  Copy of a Notification of Personnel Action (SF-50) that verifies original appointment and any ATC certifications/ratings.
• If you are claiming 10-point preference, you must also submit a completed SF-15 , Application for 10-Point Veteran’s Preference, and supporting outlines in the SF-15.

Are you one of many pilots intimidated by the invisible voices behind the avionics panel? Well, if you are, there is a magic action you can take to overcome your fear. It is as simple as scheduling a visit to a local air traffic control tower or Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility.

By meeting the people behind the invisible voices you will find that they are nowhere near as intimidating as they may appear. Air traffic controllers are people like you and me whose job it is to keep you and other fliers safe, and to help you when in need. Visiting their facilities not only will reduce any stress over ATC communications, it will also bring a better understanding of how you as a pilot can reduce any stress the controllers may experience. You will learn what the invisible voices see and why their commands make sense. And you may also learn what procedures and means of communications the controllers in your local area prefer and what their pet peeves are.

Tower and TRACON visits happen on a case-by-case basis and the rules vary from facility to facility. If you decide you want to visit a tower on a whim, you can ask the ground controller if they have time for a visit. You may get lucky and get up right away. However, generally you need to schedule a visit by calling the phone number listed for the tower.

TRACONs are a little more challenging to get into. The SoCal TRACON, for example, generally schedules monthly tours for pilots and other interested parties. However, currently that facility is under a moratorium for at least a couple of months, a SoCal TRACON representative said. The FAASTeam also schedules TRACON tours, when available; but these tours are infrequent and have to be booked several weeks in advance. So you can either track the FAASTeam availability for the TRACON facility nearest you or call the local TRACON directly to see whether they are offering tours.

If you are able to schedule your appointment, make sure to get clear instructions on how to access the facility and what you need to bring. Some facilities may require proof of citizenship, but generally any government issued identification card will do.
