In this post, we will share all about the Al Ain zoo animal safari, ranging from about the park, animals you can see, and things to do at Al Ain Zoo to the best time to visit the park. Your Al Ain zoo visit cannot be complete without embarking on desert safari to explore the world largest desert.

Table of Contents

About al ain zoo, things to do at al ain zoo, how much does zoo entry cost, when is the best time to visit al ain zoo.

Al Ain animal Safari

The Al Ain zoo was founded by His Highness the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1968, and he aimed to establish a park to preserve wildlife in the United Arab Emirates.

He had the ambition to establish a zoo that was unlike any other that could be found in the Middle East. In this zoo, animals could dwell freely in their natural habitats.

Since then, the Al Ain Zoo has developed into a breeding facility for endangered animals, including desert antelopes and the Arabian oryx, also threatened with extinction.

Visitors can see many magnificent species of animals in cages that nearly imitate their natural habitats at the Al Ain Zoo, located in a massive park that spans an area of around 400 hectares and is close to the foot of Jebel Hafeet.

Al Ain zoo is one of the most well-known and largest zoos in the GCC and home to about 4,300 animals, some of which include leopards, wolves, monkeys, lions, tigers, hippos, crocodiles, rhinos, gorillas, and giraffes. It is also one of the largest zoos in the world.

In addition to the work it does to preserve endangered species, the zoo also offers guests a variety of fun things to do, such as an opportunity to eat with lions.

There are plenty of things to do at Al Ain Zoo for animal lovers, whether you are visiting the park with your family or friends, including animal feeding, riding a bike, animal riding, shows, animal safari, and animal encounters.

Animal Encounters

At the Al Ain Zoo will be able to get up close and personal with animals like cheetahs, penguins, and more.

During the penguin parade, you can watch the zoo's Humboldt penguins look around and play in the grass. While watching, the keeper will tell you many interesting things about the penguins. You can only do this in the winter. You can also enjoy a cheetah run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 5 p.m. to see the world's fastest land animal race. Visitors can go into the lemur enclosure on the lemur walk every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 4 to 6 in the evening. Every day at 3 o'clock, you can get up close and personal with the animals at the reptile exhibit.

Animal Feedings

For many years, feeding the giraffes has been one of the best things at the Al Ain zoo. Giraffes are friendly animals, and you will get to enjoy feeding them. They use long, purple tongues to grab lettuce and carrots out of your hands. Feeding the giraffes costs Dhs32 for a group of four, and you can do it every day from 3 to 8 p.m. The feeding experience is fun for kids because they get to hold a small plate of seeds while the birds eat right out of their hands. You can also step back and watch how the animals are fed at different times in different parts of the zoo. At 5 p.m. every day, you can watch the chimpanzees eat. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, you can watch the crocodiles eat at 5 p.m., and at 3 p.m. every day, you can watch the penguins fight over fish.

Animal Rides

Your child can ride a horse, a camel, or a pony if they want to tour the zoo in style. Every day from 3 to 8 in the evening, people can ride the rides at the Children's Zoo. The cost per ride is Dhs16.

Al Ain Safari

The Al Ain Safari is an ongoing project in the Hajar Mountains near the Al Ain Zoo. The African Safari part of the attraction is now open to the public. It is one of the world's largest safaris, where you see lions, giraffes, and white rhinoceroses from Africa.

Other animals you will see during the safari include zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, antelopes, and ostriches. You might even see the addax and the Scimitar oryx, both very rare and in danger of going extinct. For the Al Ain Safari, there are many different tour packages. Some of them take place in private SUVs, and others take place in safari trucks. The SUV tours last about an hour and can fit up to six people. They are available every day and can be scheduled for specific times. The Safari truck tour lasts about 45 minutes, and up to 22 people can go on it at once. It's not good for kids younger than 5 years old.

Animals at the Al Ain Zoo

At the Al Ain Zoo, you should expect to see different wild animals as they roam around the park. These animals include lions, white rhinos, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, springbok gazelle, sable antelope, kudu, and ostrich.

You can see many different kinds of animals at the Al Ain Zoo, from herbivores like the Barbary sheep and gazelles to big cats like the lion, jaguar, and cheetah. Visitors may also see pumas, the Arabian leopard, South African cheetahs, and even an African white lion.

Animals you should stay away from are primate animals like the Western lowland gorilla and horned animals like the springbok and white rhino.

Do you love bird watching? You will enjoy seeing the Steppe eagle because it lives up to its reputation as a majestic bird of prey in nature documentaries. At the Al Ain Zoo, you may observe it in its natural habitat, together with another native bird of prey called the desert eagle owl. Other exotic birds with feathers that can be found at the zoo include two different kinds of flamingos, cockatoos and an emu that cannot fly.

There are also reptiles such as tortoises and turtles like the Aldabra giant tortoise living in enclosures that are made to look like their natural habitats.

A visit to the zoo is only worth it if you go to the crocodile exhibit at least once, where the beautiful Nile crocodile is the main attraction.

Al ain animal Safari

Tickets to the Al Ain Zoo cost Dhs32 for adults and Dhs11 for children ages 3 to 12. Children younger than 3 years old can get in for free.

An annual pass costs Dh237 for an adult and Dh95 for a child between the ages of 3 and 12. Annual pass holders get up to a 30% discount on the safari SUV, a 50% discount on the safari truck, 20% on shopping, food, and drinks, and 20% on the Al Maha Royal ticket.

A family of five can get in with a Dh662 annual pass, which lets in two adults and three children. Each additional child costs Dhs95. Both people who buy an annual pass and those who buy a family pass can save money.

The best time to visit the zoo is during the winter months in the UAE (from October to March) because you will be walking a lot and spending a lot of time outside, and you will want to stay cool.

You can also opt to visit the park in August and September, where you can hire a private vehicle service to take you on a zoo tour.

Top five places to see wildlife in the UAE, from Sharjah Safari to Dubai Safari Park

Now, you can see and even interact with wild animals at a number of places in the emirates, sharjah safari opens its doors.

Sharjah Safari opens its doors

This week, the sprawling Sharjah Safari joined the UAE's growing list of attractions where visitors can get up close and personal with wildlife, including some rare and endangered species.

The 800-hectare park in Al Dhaid, about 49 kilometres from the Sharjah city, has been seven years in the making.

“This safari is authentic. When you drive around early morning or late in the afternoon, you forget you are in the UAE — it feels as if you are in Africa," Kevin Budd, the operations manager for animals at Sharjah Safari told The National , on its opening day.

Here are the top places to see wildlife in the UAE:

The UAE's latest wildlife attraction was designed to replicate a real African safari. Across 12 environments, each representing a region in Africa, visitors will be able to experience the life and terrain of the animals and birds that live in them.

Currently, about 600 animals including lions, giraffes and rhinos call the Sharjah Safari home, with about 300 more expected to arrive later this month and in March. One of the star attractions is Wuhaida, the first female southern white rhino born in Sharjah Safari in August last year. Wuhaida's birth is the result of the safari's breeding programme, supported by the UN, that focuses on African native species.

Visitors will also be able to meet Bridi, the first African female giraffe born in Sharjah Safari. Both Wuhaida and Bridi's parents arrived at the Sharjah Safari in May 2017.

Conservation is also an important aspect of Sharjah Safari's operations. Through the emirate's Environment and Protected Areas Authority, which help develop the park, the attraction will become a centre for international captive breeding programmes for key species, and will partner with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.

Open daily, 8.30am-6.30pm; tickets are from Dh15 for children and Dh40 for adults for a guided Bronze walking tour and go all the way up to Dh3,500 for a group of 12 people in a luxury car in the Gold category; 06 803 7666

Home to more than 3,000 animals, the 119-hectare attraction in Al Warqa first opened its doors in 2017, but closed six months later to “enhance the visitor experience”. If finally reopened in 2020 under a new management with a focus on conservation, education and sustainability.

Spread across five different zones — Africa, Asia, Arabian Desert Safari, Explorer and Adventure Village — Dubai Safari Park is made up of vast green spaces surrounded by waterfalls and artificial rock faces, and plenty of spaces for its main inhabitants. A drive-through safari, with a bus carrying guests through a series of gated enclosures, is also available.

Located in Al Qana , a new waterfront destination in the capital, The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi is the largest aquarium in the Middle East, spanning more than 9,000 square metres, and home to 46,000 creatures and 300 species.

Opened in November last year, the attraction is divided into 10 zones: the UAE’s Natural Treasures, Red Sea Wreck, Atlantic Cave, The Sub, Ring of Fire, Ocean Magic, Frozen Ocean, Flooded Forest, Bu Tinah Island and Back of House.

One of the most popular zones is the Flooded Forest where visitors can find the super snake, a female reticulated python aged 14 that weighs 115 kilograms. The area also has more than 8,000 rainforest creatures, including free-roaming birds that fly around and yet don't go near guests.

In July 2020, the aquarium signed a five-year partnership with The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, “with the aim to help create the largest and most innovative rehabilitation schemes of its kind to protect and rehabilitate wildlife in the emirate of Abu Dhabi".

"The partnership has resulted in a large number of animals saved, including 200 turtles being successfully rescued and released until today," said Paul Hamilton, general manager of The National Aquarium.

Establishment

The zoo was established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1968. Our zoo is one of the most important and diverse tourism attractions on both local and global level.

As the largest zoo of its type in the Middle East, and for more than 50 years, our zoo has continued to convey the pioneering vision of the late Sheikh Zayed, demonstrating his keenness to preserve wildlife in the United Arab Emirates by preserving the environment and sustaining its resources in accordance with the best global standards.

Vision & Mission

Our zoo reflects the pioneering environmental vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and his keenness to strengthen our affiliation to our country, and to enhance cultural, historical, and environmental heritage.

The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan linked the concept of heritage to the unique relationship between the Emirati people and their land. Thus in preserving the environment, the legacy of our ancestors is preserved.

We aim to achieve this vision by hosting many different types of animals, providing them with an environment that guarantees their survival, preserving them and populating them. The zoo provides a chance to see some endangered species preserved and taken care of within habitats similar to their own, as well as a chance to even interact with them. In addition to having a fun adventure, the zoo provides an educational experience on the importance of finding a safe haven for those species. We also provide support to the academic community (schools and universities), we take on a pioneering role of increasing awareness on rescuing those species and caring for them.

Vision A world in harmony with wildlife
Mission Deliver to wildlife conservation through research, animal welfare, awareness, and positive behavior towards biodiversity
Value Teamwork Enabling Accountability & Initiative Sustainability Professionalism

Initiatives

The Father of our nation, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, established many effective environmental organizations and initiatives, which specialize in preserving the country’s arid wildlife. This struck a balance between our heritage and the unprecedented developmental pace of our nation.

Our zoo collaborates with those organizations; such as the Emirates-Wildlife Society, and Masdar initiative for clean energy, which works on developing sustainable urban planning, and aims to build environmentally-friendly establishments that do not produce waste.

Our creative Emirati staff continuously develops programs and research related to conserving our country’s arid wildlife and its main features, with a focus on enhancing the cultural and educational aspect; giving you -our visitor- a unique experience at our zoo.

Foundations

Al Ain Zoo’s main focus is conserving arid wildlife, managing it, and preserving it by integrating the three foundations of the Zoo:

  • Enhance efforts to preserve the environment by protecting its resources, applying the latest programs and strategies to sustain resources, protecting endangered animals and plants, and increasing their numbers to save them from extinction.
  • Provide tours, services, and comprehensive entertainment facilities to create a unique experience for our visitors. All our facilities are equipped to provide you with a great enjoyable experience.

Raise awareness on the importance of preserving our environmental culture and sustaining it as well as support educational institutions to ultimately enhance the environmental cultural experience. We allow our student visitors to enjoy learning about environmental lifestyles in their most realistic form.

Al Ain Zoo is the first Emirati organization to work on protecting endangered species (such as the Dama Gazelle, the Brown Capuchin, and the Arabian Sand Cat); a true pioneer in preserving the environment.

We are proud to present the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. We aim to protect natural environments, increase the number of wildlife animals in those environments, and focus on reversing the reduction in endangered population numbers. We consider that all life forms enrich our planet, they are a main component to guaranteeing a promising future for us and our children. Following the footsteps of his father, under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Al Ain Zoo was developed by nationals – a truly authentic national project – to become the largest zoo in the Middle East.

We are honored to receive the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Award for Excellence in the tourism sector, which is a tribute to the creative initiatives and the outstanding efforts we make in our continuous endeavor to develop and provide the best possible experience to our visitors.

Our professional Emirati guides, excellent cadre, and passionate staff work tirelessly to provide you with the most exciting adventures while exploring our homeland’s beautiful environment. They are also welcome to receiving and answering all your questions regarding our zoo.
