Alice Springs
Located just 200 kilometres from the geographical centre of Australia is the outback town of Alice Springs, affectionately known as ‘Alice'.
There's plenty to see and do in and around this isolated town; visit the home of unique outback community services the Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air , wander through the town centre where you'll find local Aboriginal art on display and meet friendly locals who'll share their amazing stories about life in the outback.
The historic Telegraph Station is a must-see on a visit to Alice Springs. Built in 1872 as part of the Overland Telegraph line linking Adelaide to Darwin and Australia to the world, it's a window into Australia's pioneering past.
Alice Springs is bordered by the rugged MacDonnell Ranges and has a range of incredible Red Centre experiences right on its doorstep. Follow the Red Centre Way from Alice Springs to the remote Aboriginal community of Hermannsburg and you'll witness the landscapes that inspired renowned Australian artist Albert Namatjira, who was born in this former German missionary town.
Travel further west through the breathtaking desert terrain of the West MacDonnell Ranges and you'll discover unique natural wonders like Standley Chasm and Palm Valley , an oasis of palm trees in the rugged surroundings of Finke Gorge National Park.
Alice is also a gateway to Australia's magnificent outback country, including iconic destinations including Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Kings Canyon and is part of the famous rail journey on The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin.

When you’re 1,500 clicks from the closest major city and a good 1,000 from the nearest beach, there comes a time when you need to make your own fun. And if anyone knows that, it’s the locals of Alice.
Sitting slap-bang in the middle of Australia’s dusty Red Centre, this small but charismatic town has long had to rely on an inner ingenuity for both survival and entertainment. Take the Henley-on-Todd Regatta, which, every September, sees teams of fun-fixated Territorians racing ‘boats’, by feet, and fashioned from whatever materials they fancy, along a dry riverbed. Who needs a body of water when you’ve a head for imagination?

Alice Springs Highlights
Simpsons Gap
A leisurely 18 kilometre bike ride from Alice Springs is Simpsons Gap, a break in the towering red cliffs of the West MacDonnell Ranges that’s filled by a narrow pool of water. The area is home to black-footed rock wallabies, who can usually be found at dawn and dusk eating their way through the foliage. You’ll also find hauntingly beautiful Ghost Gums, their slender white boughs twisting up to the sky. While you can’t swim at Simpsons Gap, there are a number of walking trails to enjoy, such as the Ghost Gum Walk and Cassia Hill Trail, each varying in length from 15 minutes to a few hours.
Ellery Creek
Also known as ‘The Big Hole’, Ellery Creek is the quintessential Outback waterhole. Wedged between two high ridges, the quiet swimming spot offers a variety of walking trails but, unsurprisingly, the most popular activity is simply lying on the sandy beach and soaking up the view. When the day is especially hot, dive into the cool (croc-free) waters and ‘doggy paddle’ your way through the gorge. Ellery Creek is also equipped with a gas barbecue picnic area, making it that much easier to spend the whole day here.
Ormiston Gorge
Ormiston Gorge is a little like Ellery Creek’s older sibling – wider, deeper and with more sandy beaches to stretch out on. Found eight kilometres off Namatjira Drive, the gorge is more isolated than other attractions near Alice Springs and it’s a haven for small marsupials seeking protection from the elements. You can lay down a towel and spend the day splashing around, or if you want to see what Ormiston Gorge really has to offer, lace up for the 3-4 hour hiking circuit through the Ormiston Pound, a path that crosses rocky slopes and delivers breathtaking views of the gorge. If you can, stick around until sunset, when most visitors have left and you can have the silent splendour of the gorge all to yourself.

Day trips around Alice Springs
Alice Springs is the perfect base from which to explore the Red Centre.
Flying into Alice Springs can feel like you’re travelling to another planet. A city surrounded by a vibrant red vastness, it looks as though it’s been dropped from the sky. Alice Springs is the only city in the Red Centre , making it a convenient base to spring off and explore the awe-inspiring surrounding landscapes.
Here are just a few of the most amazing things to do around Alice Springs.
West MacDonnell Ranges
Ormiston Gorge, West Macdonnell Ranges, Northern Territory © Tourism NT/Jess Caldwell & Luke Riddle
Where: A one-hour drive west from Alice Springs.
Floating in a refreshing, natural plunge pool in the middle of the desert is one of outback Australia's most memorable experiences. You’ll find ample opportunities to do just that in the spectacular Tjoritja West MacDonnell National Park (otherwise known as the ‘West Macs’), located just outside of Alice Springs. With over 161km (100mi) of natural beauty and natural water holes, it makes for a great water hole hopping day trip from Alice Springs.
Alice Springs Desert Park
Alice Springs Desert Park, Alice Springs, Northern Territory © Tourism Australia
Where: A 15-minute drive from the centre of Alice Springs.
Bust the myth that the desert is "dead" at the Desert Park on the outskirts of Alice Springs. This stunning park – part wildlife sanctuary, part botanic garden – is a mix of carefully re-created desert habitats (sand, woodland and desert rivers) and is bursting with life. Get up close to kangaroos, watch birds of prey in free flight, walk through aviaries, see snakes and animals that normally only make an appearance after dark and marvel at delicate desert wildflowers. You’ll learn how Aboriginal people find food and medicine in the desert and how these plants have cleverly adapted to their dry environment.
MacDonnell Ranges, East MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory © Tourism Australia
Where: A 15-minute drive south-east of Alice Springs city centre.
The area around Alice Springs is associated with the Caterpillar Dreaming (Yeperenye) creation story that tells how the MacDonnell Ranges were formed by great mounds of caterpillars, killed in a battle with their enemies, the stink bugs. The gaps in the ranges, including the one at the southern entrance to Alice Springs, were made when the heads of the caterpillars were bitten off. There are several sacred sites around town, but the most impressive is the caterpillar rock art that covers the rock walls at the East MacDonnell Ranges' Emily Gap , 10km (6mi) east of town along the Ross Highway. You can drive, cycle or join a tour.
Kangaroo Sanctuary
The Kangaroo Sanctuary, Alice Springs, Northern Territory © The Kangaroo Sanctuary
Where: A 20-minute drive from Alice Springs.
A baby kangaroo is called a joey, and it's almost impossible not to fall in love at first sight with the adorable orphaned joeys being cared for by Chris Barnes (better known as "Brolga", star of the hit television series, Kangaroo Dundee). Chris's Kangaroo Sanctuary is about a 20-minute drive from Alice Springs, and open for tours Tuesday through Friday in the late afternoons. Tours, which include bus transfers from Alice Springs, last about 2.5 hours and you’ll get the chance to meet some of the beautiful red kangaroos that are typical of the Red Centre. Depending on his filming schedule, you might even get to meet Kangaroo Dundee himself.
Desert Art Trail
Papunya Artist, Central Australia, Northern Territory © Tourism NT
Where: The trail starts just a five-minute drive from Alice Springs.
Learn about the fascinating world of Aboriginal art by visiting the art galleries of Alice Springs. Start at the Araluen Arts Centre , which contains several galleries of Central Australian Aboriginal art as well as one of the country's largest collection of works by the renowned Albert Namatjira. The Tjanpi Desert Weavers – a group of more than 400 women artists from 26 remote communities – make beautiful baskets adorned with seeds and feathers, as well as quirky fibre sculptures of dogs and desert animals. Tangentyere Artists also produce quirky sculptures as well as beautiful fabrics, blankets and jewellery, all made from recycled metal, wood and abandoned objects. In Todd Mall, the pedestrianised shopping strip of Alice Springs, Papunya Tula Artists and Mbantua Gallery are good places to buy beautiful painted canvases to take home.
Finke Gorge National Park
Palm Valley, Finke Gorge National Park, Northern Territory © Tourism NT
Where: About a two-hour drive west of Alice Springs.
Another spectacular national park on Alice Springs’ doorstep is Finke Gorge . Home to one of the world’s oldest rivers – over 350 million years old – this remarkable landscape is lined with unique and age-old nature. Explore Palm Valley by foot or 4WD, where a plethora of distinctive flora and fauna grow including the vibrant red cabbage palms that are endemic to this area.

Day One (lunch & dinner)
Your 3-Day Uluru Tour from Alice Springs starts with a sunrise departure into the heat of Australia’s Red Centre. After a fresh lunch, hike through the Valley Of The Winds at Kata Tjuta . This is one of the most exciting and mesmerizing walks near Uluru, as you admire the wonder of the 36 steep rocks blushing in the sun. From the heights of the lookouts, you can gaze out across the desert at the mirage of colours the outback has to offer and take some spectacular photographs to capture the moment.
The highlight of the evening will be the first time you witness the staggering sunset that melts over Uluru, with a glass of champagne and nibbles in hand. Finish a perfect day with dinner, campfire tales and a tranquil night of sleeping under the stars .
Day Two (breakfast, lunch & dinner)
The day will begin bright and early with breakfast and a sunrise viewing. After, you can spend the morning hiking around Uluru. Start your journey to the iconic Ayers Rock. At the base of the Uluru, you can watch the monolith change colours in the roiling sun and hear fabulous tales peppered with myth and magic from ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. The Cultural Centre is the next place to explore and the perfect chance to immerse yourself in the splendour and simplicity of local life. Find out all about the old ways and ancient rituals, admire the locally inspired art and pick up beautiful handcrafted souvenirs to take back home.
In the evening, we will travel to our campsite near Kings Canyon. Here we will enjoy an outback dinner and share stories around the campfire whilst retiring for the evening with another incredible night camping under the stars.
Day Three (breakfast & lunch)
Day three begins with a hearty breakfast together as a group before camping up our campsite. Once refuelled we will take on the spectacular Kings Canyon Rim Walk. Nestled in the Watarrka National Park , Kings Canyon is a remarkable environment of rugged scenery and carved red cliffs that shelter the lush Garden Of Eden that sits in the gorge below.
