Chianti Lovers, Rejoice: Here Are the Best Antinori Winery Tours
For anyone with a passion for Italian wine, the Antinori winery tours in Tuscany are an experience not to be missed.
Antinori is among Italy’s best known brands of wine – synonymous with Chianti and the Super Tuscan wines , Antinori was founded in 1385, and is still owned and operated by the same family: the 25th and 26th Antinori generations, no less! Marquis Piero Antinori and his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia, manage the company, combining tradition and innovation. “Ancient roots play an important role in our work, but have never been a limit to our innovative spirit,” the Marquis likes to say.
Antinori’s most famous product is Tignanello , one of the first Super Tuscans, considered one of the world’s greatest wines. Other renowned wines produced by the Antinori family are Solaia, “the sunny one”, and Badia a Passignano.
Now imagine having the chance to taste these great wines right in the place where they are made, the beautiful Tuscan countryside just south of Florence: the heart of the Chianti region . You can make your dream a reality when you go on one of the following Antinori winery tours. You can even opt to stay at a fabulous resort run by the Antinori family.
Read on to pick among the Antinori winery tours most suited to you.
The Best Antinori Winery Tours
Winery visit and tasting at cantina antinori.
The perfect day trip from Florence to immerse yourself in the world of Chianti wine-making. Cantina Antinori was inaugurated in 2012 to showcase more than 600 years of wine-making history. As stated on the Cantina Antinori’s website, the winery “represents the Antinori family’s love and passion for the Chianti Classico hillsides and reflects the centuries-old bond that the Antinori family has with their ancestral territory.”
Set among olive groves, vineyards and oak trees, almost hidden from view, the cellar was designed by one of Italy’s leading architects, Marco Casamonti. Most of the facility is underground, constructed within the hillside, as a way to highlight the winery’s rootedness to the land around it. The 540,000 square-foot structure includes an auditorium, a museum, a restaurant and a wine shop. All you can see from outside is the restaurant terrace, which overlooks the vineyards.
On this Antinori winery tour, you’ll be led on a visit of the museum, which traces the family’s long and illustrious history and displays their private art collection that includes many portraits of ancestors, and of the wine cellars, a series of softly-lit, sleek caves and spectacular, airy rooms tucked deep inside the hill. At the end of the visit, delight your palate with a tasting of three of the best Antinori wines: Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva, Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva and Badia a Passignano.
Badia a Passignano and the Great Antinori Wines
This tour is ideal for those who want to enjoy a little history with their wine. In 1987, the Antinori’s bought the 325-hectare estate around the 4 th -century Vallombrosian abbey , founded by the archbishop of Florence 18 miles south of the Tuscan capital. Walking among the vineyards, you’ll learn about the vine-growing process; you’ll then visit the historic monastery and cellars. Vallombrosan monks still live here. They are known for their love of books, for promoting scientific research (Galileo taught there in 1587) and for their meticulous care of the surrounding fields, especially the cultivation of grapevines and reforestation.
The tour concludes with a delicious meal at the one-star Michelin Osteria di Passignano , accompanied, of course, by some of the best Antinori wines, such as Chianti Classico Riserva Badia a Passignano, Tignanello, Guado al Tasso, and Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino.
Private Cooking Class with Antinori’s Osteria di Passignano in Chianti
Why limit yourself to wine when you can enjoy it accompanied by tasty Tuscan food? And even learn a few tricks of Tuscan cuisine so that you can enjoy the experience again when you’re back home.
Your special teacher is the chef of the one-star Michelin Osteria di Passignano. The lesson takes place in the professional kitchen at Antinori’s Fonte de’ Medici Estate, where the stars of the Antinori’s wines, Tignanello and Solaia, are produced. While you learn how to prepare a four-course menu , you’ll enjoy tastings of Pecorino cheeses, balsamic vinegar and Amedei chocolate; at the end, you’ll receive a diploma and a complimentary recipe book to take home.
Enjoy the fruits of your labor afterwards, when you have lunch at Osteria di Passignano nearby, sampling the dishes you previously prepared, accompanied by Antinori wines.
Chianti Nord Wine Tour
This full-day tour from Florence is ideal for those who want an overview of the Chianti wine region, besides the Antinori winery.
The first stop is Greve in Chianti , the main town in the Chianti wine district, 19 miles south of Florence. Olive oil and wine production are the main agricultural activities here. After a tour of Greve, you’ll explore different vineyards of the area, including Casaloste, known for their fine Chianti Classico and Riserva wines, Antinori, and Setriolo, with visits to their cellars and tastings.
Staying in the heart of the Chianti region
Now that you’ve got an overview of the best Antinori winery tours, you may decide that you’d like to spend more than a day in this enchanting area of Tuscany. You can book a stay at Fonte de’ Medici , a resort run by the Antinori family. The Super Tuscans Tignanello and Solaia are made from vines grown around the Fonte de’ Medici estate. The resort consists of two restored medieval villages, with apartments, two swimming pools, a wellness center, all set amid olive and cypress trees. The ultimate Chianti experience.

Antinori Toscana Tignanello 2019
Antinori’s Tignanello, a wine that defined an era and a region, continues to be innovative and remain relevant and exciting. It was a game-changer for Tuscany in the 1970s and a catalyst for the renaissance of Italian wines in general, and since then Tignanello hasn’t missed a beat. Marchesi Antinori CEO Renzo Cotarella interprets each vintage to gain greater understanding of the Tignanello vineyard. In 2019, Cotarella attributed the freshness and finesse of Tignanello to adequate rainfall from May to September. In recent vintages, he has fine-tuned the use of oak barrels, while the blending is done after the malolactic fermentation for a better integration of the different grapes.
Tasting Note
A supple, elegant red highlighted by bright cherry, black currant, violet, tobacco, iron and oak spice aromas and flavors. Though fluid and seemingly approachable now, this is well-structured and shows the balance to age. Fine length. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2042. 25,800 cases made. —Bruce Sanderson

Why the Antinori winery near Florence is a must-visit
If you’re visiting Florence, a visit to the Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery is a must, especially for those who appreciate wine. Antinori is one of the oldest companies in the world, with roots that can be traced back to 1385. While we were there in February, it was still cold and the vines were resting. But the Antinori estate was still beautiful, especially when we took the spiral staircase up to the rooftop garden. Here is why the Antinori winery near Florence is a must-visit.
Antinori has huge historical significance in Italy’s wine industry, playing a significant role in the ‘ Super Tuscan ‘ revolution in the 70s. Back then, wine-makers were very tightly restricted in terms of the type and percentage of grape varietals that could be used in wine to get a certain accreditation, such as DOC or DOCG . Some wine-makers decided to ignore this classification and make ‘Super Tuscans’, wines from Tuscany made with blends and wine-making techniques that were not based on the conditions for accreditation. Back then, these wines could not fetch a price as high as those with DOCG accreditation, but many of them proved to be excellent in their own way.
Antinori’s most famous wine – Tignanello – is made from grapes grown at a 47 hectare vineyard acquired in 1900. According to Wikipedia, the wine was produced for the first time in 1970 by Piero Antinori – whose father Nicolo had scandalised/revolutionised (depending on the time period) the Tuscany wine region by experimenting with French Bordeaux grape varietals. He was rewarded for challenging the status quo when Tignanello won several international awards. Since 1982, Tignanello has been made from approximately 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard lies at 350–400 metres above sea level, within the Santa Cristina estate (also known as Tenuta Tignanello). [It is a 10min drive from the Antinori nel Chianti Classico. See picture below.]
Location & Parking
Antinori was a short 30 min drive from our hotel B&B The Attico in Florence . It was also a 30 min drive from our lunch destination, the restaurant of Dario Cecchini . If you are heading to Siena, it is a 40 min drive away. If you drive, you are able to park within the complex during winter. During other seasons, you can park at the carpark located across the winery.
Wine tours range from €35 – €160
There is an option of pre-booking a wine tour around this big estate. The basic tour costs €35, and if you wish to have lunch at the restaurant, it costs €160. We didn’t take this option as we were looking to try other types of wines other than the ones listed in the tour, including the Tignanello. We also had four other Brunello vineyards to visit the day after (more on that in a post to come).
Visit to the wine shop – you can do a tasting too
Wine lovers could spend a day in Antinori’s wine shop – the selection was so diverse. The good thing is that we had a chance to taste the wines before buying them. We tried the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva for €4 and the Tignanello for €8 – like the staff suggested, the Chianti Classico was the younger brother of the Tignanello. More fruit-forward, but less refined and elegant. That said, both were excellent and we bought a bottle of each – both to rest for a few years before enjoying. The Chianti Classico was about €30 while the Tignanello was €77. It was a reasonable price for the quality. At an admittedly touristy wine shop in Siena, the price about €120.
Rooftop vineyard and garden
After buying the wines, we climbed up the spiral staircase to see the garden. From an architectural standpoint, it was quite a feat because the vineyards integrated quite seamlessly into the facade of the main Antinori building.
The Travelling Squid’s Take
If you’re into wine, Antinori makes for a great visit. The estate is very well-designed – architecturally, it gives the appearance of the building flowing into the hills, while being enveloped by the vines. I’m sure it will look beautiful in summer. A minor caveat is that this is not actually the vineyard where the grapes of their more acclaimed wines, such as Solaia and Tignanello are grown. That’ll be found further East, at Tenuta Tignanello. The brown tones are not intrusive and so are the contours of the building which folds into the hills. While we didn’t take the tour around the building, I was glad to view the rooftop garden and the hills of Tuscany. The wine prices were also much more reasonable than the ones we had seen in major cities.

Tignanello was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with untraditional varieties (specifically Cabernet) and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region that didn’t use white grapes. Tignanello is a milestone. It’s produced with a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2018 growing season in Chianti Classico began with normal winter weather both in terms of temperatures and rainfall. Despite these climatic conditions, the vines began bud break a week earlier than seasonal averages in this area. Spring was characterized by frequent rain showers and lower than average temperatures, especially during the month of May, while June and July were hot and dry uninterrupted by extreme heat events. Scattered rainfall in the month of August and a dry, breezy spell This growing season’s climate trends challenged us to be focused and diligent both in the vineyards during harvesting activities and when grapes were brought to the cellar where sorting operations and initial winemaking processes were essential to achieve optimal results. During fermentation in truncated conical tanks, each individual must was macerated on the skins giving particular emphasis to preserving aromas, extracting color, and encouraging desirable tannins that are supple and elegant. Racking was performed after Tignanello 2018 is a deeply intense ruby red color. On the nose, it’s remarkably complex with notes of ripe red fruit, black cherries, sour cherries that merge with sweet hints of vanilla, mint and delicate sensations of white pepper and myrtle. Its palate is rich and well-balanced: supple velvety tannins are sustained by exceptional freshness that give the wine length, elegance and persistence of flavors.

The Revered Tenuta Tignanello Estate
The Tenuta Tignanello wine estate has been under the ownership of the Antinori family for over 25 generations. They’ve dedicated 127 hectares (nearly 40%) of alberese limestone rock covered land to vineyards.
The most famous vineyard is Tignanello, followed by Solaia .
The calcareous marl limestone rich soils make the perfect terroir for indigenous grape varieties like Sangiovese and non-traditional varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon .
The Tignanello and Solaia wines produced here are some of the most influential ones in the history of Italian wine.
Let’s dive into Tignanello’s colorful history to understand why the wine is so unique!
Tignanello: A Story of Pioneering Innovations
In the 1960s, winemaker Piero Antinori visited various wine regions across the globe - mostly Bordeaux in France and California in the US to bring back the finesse of Sangiovese wine.
Inspired by Bordeaux winemaking practices, he set up the Tignanello vineyard in the Chianti Classico region - to experiment with saving the rich heritage of the Italian grapes along with Giacomo Tachis.
On the advice of Prof. Emile Peynaud, Marchese Piero Antinori took a few big risks. All of these paid off, kicking off the Super Tuscan revolution !
Here’s what he did:
- For the first time for a Chianti, he decided not to use any white grapes (Malvasia, Trebbiano, and Chardonnay) in the red wine blend to bring down the flavor of Sangiovese. It would bring down the DOC status of the Chianti Classico to mere table wine, but Piero took the risk.
- The first vintage made by Marchese Piero Antinori (80% Sangiovese grape, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc) was the first red wine to have an untraditional grape variety - Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Piero Antinori aged the wine in small oak barrels (new barrique) rather than old oak barrels.
So, which are the best Tignanello vintages that you should get hold of? And, what does Tignanello wine taste like?
8 Best Antinori Tignanello Vintages to Buy in 2023 (Including Prices & Tasting Notes)
Tignanello is made predominantly with Sangiovese and Cabernet grape varieties.
It was the first Sangiovese wine made with no Trebbiano or other white grapes.
It is known for its aromatic intensity and flavors of red fruit, sour cherry, spice, tobacco, and herbs. But, there is something unique in every vintage.
1. 1971 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($582)
The first vintage from the Tignanello vineyard, the 1971 Antinori Tignanello is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet grapes (untraditional varieties.)
The aging in barrique gives it unique oak flavors of chocolate, sweet tobacco, cedar, and vanilla. On the nose, you get hints of licorice, cigar, espresso bean, and cassis. The silky perfectly ripe tannins give it a smooth finish, and the wine glides through the palate, leaving a lasting taste.
2. 1975 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($213)
The 1975 Antinori was only produced in limited quantities. But, it was such a fine wine that the winery quickly ran out of the vintage. Today, it is one of the most favorable vintages and more difficult to find than the first vintage.
Spice aromas dominate the nose while the aging in small oak barrels adds notes of dried earth, pipe tobacco, and leather. On the palate, this wine packs dark fruit notes.
With supple velvety tannins and medium-high acidity, this Super Tuscan wine is a blast of red fruit flavors. You also get fruit hints of blackberry, black cherry, and plum with Mediterranean herbs with a lasting finish.
3. 1977 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($168)
Another complex vintage from the winemaker, this Tuscan wine has a nose that’s dominated by pure aromas of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, cedar, and vanilla. Cabernet Sauvignon adds fruit notes of black cherry, black currant, blueberry, and plum.
The aging in barriques has allowed this deep and jovial wine to develop oak and dark fruit flavors.
4. 1979 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($350)
The 1979 vintage vino showcases maturity while still maintaining its freshness.
This Italian wine gives off delicate aromas of herbal tea with notes of red fruit, dried flowers, mint, cocoa, vanilla, and licorice. The hint of mulling spice and the lasting finish make it a perfect wine for a lively celebration!
5. 1993 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($257)
Another powerful vintage from the producer, the 1993 vintage has a rich complexity and dominant fruit character - perfect for first-time Tignanello drinkers.
Sangiovese adds ripe red fruit flavors and firm tannins to the wine. The wine is dominated by Mediterranean herbs, dried flowers, cherry liquor, raisins, and a hint of wood with a tonic acidity.
The wine gives a tangy freshness to the palate with a classic Tignanello long finish and prominent acidity.
6. 2015 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($169)
This younger Super Tuscan is an ideal vintage for wine collectors. An exquisite and perfumed wine, the 2015 vintage promises great aging .
Fresh acidity and mouth-watering red fruit flavors give the wine depth. Currently, the flavors of red cherry, blackberries, rose water, and ripe red fruit like raspberry dominate the palate, but you also get slight hints of aging in barriques and herbs that would develop as the wine matures.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate had given this Italian wine 96 points for its immediate accessibility and fully bloomed rose nose.
7. 2016 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($164)
Another young Tignanello, this Super Tuscan is ready to drink even though it is young.
The fermentation allows the wine to develop notes of juicy cherries - red and black with savory spice flavors and fresh herbs, and wet earth that will become more expressive as the wine ages.
You also get a hint of wild berries (bright red toned berries) and the sweet spice flavors add a slight kick to the wine. The firm tannins give it a good aging potential of around 40 years.
8. 2017 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT ($137)
The Tignanello 2017 is one of the most favorable vintages with excellent aging potential. With a delicate aroma, this wine has a fresh primary fruit flavor of black currant.
The wine is aged in conical oak barrels lending it the classic Tignanello Super Tuscan flavors of sweet tobacco and licorice.
Now, do the non-traditional varieties of grapes affect the aging potential of this Toscana IGT wine?
Does Tignanello Wine Age Well?
Sangiovese grapes add firm tannins to the wine giving it excellent aging potential. That’s why this Super Tuscan wine is one of the most sought-after collectibles among wine investors and collectors.
The recent vintages show that Tignanello is great to drink young, but the more mature vintages have more deep and complex flavors.
Investing in Tignanello Wine
Super Tuscans as a category is one of the most sought-after investment wines today - and so is Tignanello. The best part is that most vintages are more affordably priced than other Super Tuscans or Bordeaux first growths.
In terms of popularity, it is as sought-after in Hong Kong and the East as it is in Europe and the US today.
So, the 25,000-30,000 cases of Tignanello produced annually are usually sold out globally within days.
Rave critic reviews are an added plus. Robert Parker described the 2010 vintage as “an articulate wine with a long story to tell about the quality of its profound 2010 fruit."
The wine’s price appreciation is relatively stable. For instance, the 2013 vintage has seen a 45% price increase from $112 in 2019 to $160 in 2021.
So, how do you buy the best Tignanello for your collection without worrying about counterfeits or having to go through the hassles of buying, shipping, and storing it?
The best option would be to entrust a wine investment company like Vinovest to buy and store your bottle for you!
Wine Grapes Used in Tignanello and their Flavors
As you’ve seen, Tignanello wines have three major grape varieties in their blend.
Let’s see what flavors these grapes contribute to the wine.
- Sangiovese: Tignanello wines are known to showcase the full expression, finesse and texture of the Sangiovese grape. The 80-85% Sangiovese content gives it red berry fruit flavors of strawberry, red plum, fig, and cherry.
- Cabernet Sauvignon: The first untraditional grape variety added to a Chianti wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, adds dark fruit flavors of black cherry, black currant, cedar, baked spices, and graphite.
- Cabernet Franc: The parent grape of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, adds flavors of red berry fruit (strawberry and raspberry), bell pepper, gravel, and chili to the wine.
Now, in case you’re curious about the other wines made by Antinori, here’s some insight into it:
Other Tuscan Wines from Marchese Antinori Estate
Besides Solaia and Tignanello, the Antinori family produces a range of Tuscan blended reds in the limestone rich soils of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany.
Their most famous Chianti Classico is Chianti Classico Riserva. This Tuscan wine is aged in conical oak tanks, which gives it savory spice flavors. It has no white grapes and is made of 80% Sangiovese with small quantities of other red varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah.
Second in popularity to Chianti Classico Riserva would be the Guado al Tasso wine from Bolgheri, Italy. Made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, this Tuscan wine is known for its ripe red fruit flavors, mellow tannins, and black currant notes.

Introduction by Chris Mercer
Tignanello is a trailblazer of the ‘Super Tuscan’ movement, born under the guidance of Antinori in 1971 after leaving the Chianti Classico denomination in order to add small amounts of classic Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to a Sangiovese-dominant blend.
It has since gained a legion of fans, including Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager, who told Decanter.com a few years back that ‘my drinking wine would be Tignanello’ .

Historical Data
Tignanello is produced exclusively from the vineyard of the same name, a parcel of some 140 acres (57 hectares) with limestone-rich soils and a southwestern exposure at 1150-1325 feets (350-400 meters) above sea level at the Tignanello estate. It was the first Sangiovese wine to be aged in small oak barrels, the first modern red wine to use such non-traditional varieties as Cabernet in the blend, and among the first red wines from the Chianti Classico area to be produced without white grapes. The wine, originally called "Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Tignanello" (a Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tignanello vineyard), was produced for the first time from a single vineyard parcel in 1970, when the blend contained 20% of Canaiolo and 5% of Trebbiano and Malvasia, both white grapes, and the wine aged in small oak barrels. In 1971 it became a Tuscan red table wine rather than a Chianti Classico, and was called Tignanello. In the 1975 vintage the percentage of white grapes was definitively eliminated from the blend. Ever since 1982, the blend has been the one currently used. Tignanello is bottled only in favorable vintages, and was not produced in 1972, 1973,1974, 1976, 1984, 1992, and 2002.
The label was designed by Silvio Coppola in 1974 for the release of Tignanello 1971. The idea to commission this artist was discussed at an event at Castello della Sala in 1973. Silvio Coppola was an important Italian graphic and interior designer who was famous for his minimalist lighting fixtures and austere furniture but also for book cover designs for Italian publishing company Feltrinelli. Silvio Coppola was the perfect match for the job.
The Signature
Marchese Piero Antinori, the current Honorary President, decided to have his father, Niccolò Antinori, sign the label as a sign of recognition for his father’s confidence in him.

The 2021 vintage from Chianti Classico will be remembered for a long slow-paced season: a vintage that promises power and finesse. Temperatures during the winter months were not excessively cold and were accompanied by rain showers that lasted up until the end of March. The beginning of spring triggered early bud break, but cool, dry weather in April slowed down the vines’ vegetative cycle. May and June followed normal weather patterns, not too hot, with scattered precipitation that guaranteed excellent flowering and fruit set of all grape varieties in Tenuta Tignanello’s vineyards. Overall, summer was hot and dry, especially during August but towards the end of the month, occasional rainfall provided ideal conditions for the vines to begin the ripening phase. September and October were picture perfect: sunny skies, no heat spikes, refreshing breezes and cool nighttime temperatures that allowed the grapes to gradually progress to peak ripeness. Overall, the 2021 vintage is considered to be one of the best vintages ever. Harvesting operations began during the last half of September for Sangiovese and were completed October 20th with Cabernet.
Vinification
This growing season’s climate trends challenged us to be focused and diligent both in the vineyards during harvesting activities and when grapes were brought to the cellar where sorting operations and initial winemaking processes were essential to achieve optimal results. During fermentation in truncated conical tanks, each individual must was macerated on the skins giving particular emphasis to preserving aromas, extracting color, and encouraging desirable tannins that were supple and elegant. Racking was performed after rigorous daily sampling and tasting. Once separated from the skins, the wine was transferred into small oak barrels where it underwent malolactic fermentation to accentuate aromatic finesse and complexity. Aging took place in French oak barrels and a small percentage in Hungarian oak, predominantly new barrels, for a total period of approximately 15 months: after an initial period of aging the lots separately, they were blended then completed barrel aging. Tignanello, crafted mainly with Sangiovese and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, underwent an additional 12-month period of aging in the bottle before being released.
Tasting Notes
Tignanello 2021 is ruby red with intense purple hues. The nose is complex: notes of ripe plums, blackberries and candied orange peels lead to pleasant hints of dark chocolate, caramel, and licorice. Sweet hints of tobacco complete the impressive bouquet. The palate is rich, sophisticated, intense and is defined by supple vibrant tannins followed by a long persistent finish.

Tenuta Tignanello
The Tenuta Tignanello estate is in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the gently rolling hillsides between the Greve and Pesa river valleys. It extends over an area of 319 hectares (788 acres), of which about 130 (321 acres) are dedicated to vines. Two of the estate’s prized vineyards are on the same hillside, Tignanello and Solaia, on soils that originated from marine marlstone from the Pliocene period rich in limestone and schist. The vines enjoy hot temperatures during the day and cooler evenings throughout the growing season. The estate’s two signature wines, Solaia and Tignanello, are produced from these vineyards and have been defined by the international press as “among the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture”. According to Marchesi Antinori, Solaia and Tignanello are an ongoing challenge and a never-ending passion. The Tignanello estate has vineyards of indigenous Sangiovese grapes as well as some other untraditional varieties such as Cabernet Franc.

Tasting Notes
First made in 1971, this legendary Italian wine now celebrates its 50th birthday. Happy Birthday, Tignanello! The Marchesi Antinori 2021 Tignanello (made with 79% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc) pulls on all the heartstrings. To be released in May, the wine shows a quintessentially pretty taste profile with tart fruit flavors, redcurrant, tea leaf, heritage rose, crushed white pepper, licorice, nutmeg, clove and chopped mint. It opens slowly to reveal more richness and exuberance with time, becoming downright voluptuous and heady a short while later. The through line, however, remains the bright freshness and minerality of Sangiovese. Compared to the 2018 vintage (which I also loved), this vintage has more overall fruit weight and volume. 2025-2048
