In between undulating tea plantations and emerald rainforest, the city of Kandy lies within the Mahaweli River’s protective embrace. The former capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy’s famed for sheltering a tooth of the Buddha — the country’s most holy Buddhist relic — along with botanical gardens, temples and an artificial lake.

Kandy has a thriving food scene, with a growth in the number of restaurants starting to provide authentic Kandyan home cooking. Away from the throbbing motorbikes and noisy market vendors, the Kandy Lake is a calm oasis fronting the Temple of the Tooth. From the lakeside you can look out for Indian cormorant, stork-billed kingfisher and the alligator-like Asian water monitor lizard.

Temple of the Tooth

At the temple, puja (prayers) occur daily, where the tooth is taken out of its chamber in its golden casket for devout Buddhists to worship. The room is filled with flowers, praying Buddhists, onlookers and the sound of rhythmic drummers. Outside of puja, you can quietly admire the temple’s contrasting simple wooden structures, flamboyant Buddha statues and lavish gold roofs.

Kandy Lake was created as an additional feature for the Temple of the Tooth. You can take a break from the bustle of the city by walking the path encircling the lake. Nuga and palm trees shade the path, and you’ll notice white egret cranes, wood storks and pelicans around the water’s edge.

The Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya

The botanical gardens are the largest in Sri Lanka and are abundant with the smell of spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom. The main lawn is ruled by a giant Javan fig tree. At over 100 years old its thick trunk and spidery canopy of branches stretch over 2,420 sq m (26,048 sq ft). As you wander around, you’ll be joined by curious monkeys and can spot snoozing fruit bats hanging in the trees.

Back in the city, you can delve into the Kandyan food scene on a guided walking food tour. You’ll be taken on a culinary journey through Kandy’s markets, sampling tropical fruit and milky ‘workers tea’, before being greeted with plates of freshly fried Kandyan snacks such as wade at a woman’s cooperative. Your day culminates in visiting a café for curd and treacle (a typical Sri Lankan desert).

Alternatively, on an evening food walk your guide will introduce you to egg hoppers (rice-flour pancakes with an egg in the bottom) and kottu (a dish made of shredded roti, stir-fried vegetables and leftover meat cooked in egg).

Deciding the best time to go to Sri Lanka depends on your trip objectives and where on the island you want to visit. Although Sri Lanka is a relatively small island, it experiences two distinct monsoon seasons with some "shoulder" months between the two seasons. For many people, the best time to visit Sri Lanka is in November, when visitors can still enjoy the decent weather at the popular beaches in the south while avoiding a bulk of the crowds.

Peak Season in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has sunshine on some part of the island pretty much year-round, but if you're like most people and plan to head to the beaches in the south, the driest months are between December and March, and thus these months also tend to be the most crowded. Galle, Unawatuna , Mirissa, Weligama, and Hikkaduwa are driest and receive the most visitors between December and March. October and November are often the wettest months in the area. Temperatures rise month over month in intensity until April, or May brings rain and cooler temperatures.  

If visiting between May and October, you'll need to go to the northern or eastern sides of the island to find more sunshine. Jaffna and Trincomalee, although less popular, are good places to visit when the southwestern monsoon is causing heavy rain around Galle.

The months of April and November fall between the two monsoon seasons; weather can go either way. Mixed rainy and sunny days often occur across the island during shoulder months between seasons.

Weather in Sri Lanka

Temperatures and unbearable humidity usually peak around April and May—especially in Colombo, where concrete and pollution tend to trap heat. Short showers bolster humidity until wet season arrives to cool everything down.

You'll barely take note of the humidity while enjoying the persistent sea breeze on beaches, but you'll undoubtedly notice the instant that you leave the sand. A walk to the road or inland away from the coast is a good reminder that you're in a very tropical country with plenty of steamy jungle areas nearby.

When to Visit Kandy, Hill Country, and the Interior

Sri Lanka's interior and cultural capital of Kandy stay a brilliant green for a reason: They receive rain from two separate monsoons.

Kandy often receives the most rain in October and November.   The driest months are usually January, February, and March. Although the hottest month in Kandy is April, temperatures are generally far more mild and pleasant than those found outside of hill country.

Receiving sunshine for your trek to Adam's Peak merely is a matter of luck and wind direction. The winds can keep rain out of the region, or switch with little notice to bring showers from whichever side of the island happens to have the monsoon.

Understanding Sri Lanka's Monsoons

Because of its location, Sri Lanka uniquely experiences two monsoon seasons throughout the year. Mother Nature may not always observe our calendar. However, the seasons are somewhat predictable.

The southwest monsoon hammers the popular beach destinations along the southwestern side of the island throughout May to September. Meanwhile, the northern and eastern sides of the island are relatively dry.

The northeast monsoon brings rain to the northern and eastern sides of Sri Lanka, particularly between December and February. Traveling during monsoon season can still be enjoyable.

When to Visit Sri Lanka to See the Whale Migration

If you time your trip correctly, you'll have the option to see both blue whales and sperm whales on whale-watching excursions. The whales migrate, so catching them at specific points around Sri Lanka takes some timing.

The peak season for seeing whales in Mirissa and the south of Sri Lanka is between December and March. Whales can also be seen on the east coast in Trincomalee between June and September.

Alankuda Beach at Kalpitiya is the ideal place to see dolphins in Sri Lanka between December and March.

March can be a great time to visit Sri Lanka, as the rainy season is yet to come and the bulk of winter's tourists have left. Weather is warm and nightly rainfall is frequent. Come May, some portions of the island will be affected by the southwestern monsoon.

Events to check out:

• Sinhalese New Year is a Tamil holiday that takes place on April 14. It's celebrated with games, family gatherings, and meals.
• May Day, also known as International Workers' Day, is celebrated each year in early May.

If you visit Sri Lanka during the summer, expect several hours per day of rain. While the ocean is warm, seas are rough at this time, and parts of the island are subject to hurricanes. Visitors to the Western side of the island will find it to be much drier, but also very hot.

• Summer marks the kick-off of many Muslim religious holidays, such as Eid al-Fitr, the first day of the Islamic holy month, and Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice.

Fall weather brings the northeast monsoon to much of the island, whereas the southwestern part of the country stays slightly drier. November is also the beginning of the tourist season, and a great time to visit: The weather is still warm, but humidity and rainfall is bearable. By visiting just before the busy season begins, you'll be able to negotiate better rates for accommodation and won't have to fight for patches of sand on the beaches.

• Diwali, also called Deepavali, is celebrated in early November. The Hindu festival of lights is marked by impressive displays of candles.

Not surprisingly, Sri Lanka's short winter is the most popular time to visit the island. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, averaging around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the sun shines much of the day. The ocean is calm and nights are cooler, making winter an all-around ideal season to visit—if you can bear the crowds.

• Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25.
• Sri Lanka's Independence Day is celebrated on February 4. It was on this day in 1948 that the country gained its independence from British rule.

March and November are the best months to visit Sri Lanka, as the weather is warmer and it is less rainy than other parts of the year.

Because of its unique location, Sri Lanka has two different monsoon seasons that affect different parts of the island. From May to September, the southwestern beaches get a lot of rain and the northeast region usually gets hit between December and February.

Although you might be led to believe that these establishments take care of animals (which is partly true), the animals are used more as a form of entertainment, rather than genuinely being taken care of. 7. Head for the Hills to Visit the Kandy Buddha Statue

The Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue is the biggest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka . This 88-foot-high statue is nestled within the hilltops above Kandy, in the shadow of the Knuckles mountain range. The top can easily be reached by car or motorbike, and a small climb up the stairs will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the city.

The Dalada Maligawa is a revered site for Buddhist’s worldwide. It is the premier showcase of Theravada Buddhism. Unfortunately, it has become a den of thieves. Nowhere in the world does any “faith” charge to enter their holiest sites. All tourist’s including expats will be charged a fee to enter this site. This disgusting practice has been perpetrated on tourists for many years. It is one thing to ask for donations and another to charge an entry fee ( incl: Buddhist’s on foreign passports). Unfortunately, shameful practices like this have become the norm in Sri Lanka.

Also, be very careful to renew your visa before the expiry date. Do not rely on the online visa extension system. It often does not work or fails to recognise your passport number. You are expected to immediately halt your trip and return to the immigration office in Colombo before the expiry date. The immigration officers enjoy stomping on people’s heads. They will not accept any fault of the system or the department, and will impose a fine of USD $500 for overstaying, plus, the additional visa costs. No excuse will save you ! The tourist can gauge the caliber of these officers on arrival at the airport by their unfriendly, miserable faces, and rude conduct.

If you are a female travelling in the outstation areas on a bike or car ( especially Jaffna) even as a passenger; be aware that you will be stopped on the pretext of violating some road rule and asked/intimidated for “donations” by the police . Many of whom are nothing more than highway robbers.

Sri Lanka is still a beautiful country. But be acutely aware that you as a tourist will be viewed as nothing more than a ‘milking cow’.

January in Sri Lanka 

January is a great time to be in the southwest of Sri Lanka because this part of the country is dry and the weather is wonderfully pleasant – it’s not humid and it’s not too hot. 

The days are remarkably sunny and there are few clouds in the sky, but of course, with optimal temperatures, comes peak tourist season. 

Those temperatures range between 20 and 30 degrees depending on your location, which draws in many winter sun-seekers from across the northern hemisphere too. 

January might be the best time to visit Sri Lanka, but everyone else will have the same idea too, especially in the southwest which is the tourist hot spot. 

Yaks National Park is one d the most popular destinations in January, and it’s worth the higher costs and busier tracks because you’ll be able to see a wealth of wildlife in the wilderness. 

The animals are easy to spot in the dry season, and you’ll be able to find elephants, leopards and perhaps even a sloth. 

February in Sri Lanka

February is also the best time to visit Sri Lanka to explore the south and west coasts too, but these sides of the island are rain-free. 

The north and east coasts, on the other hand, are right now being lashed with heavy rain and storms from the prevailing monsoon. 

February is busy in the south though, but the weather is beautiful. Head to Marissa, along the coast, where you can enjoy fantastic white sand beaches and sit under swaying palm trees in a tropical idyll. 

Mirissa is a great destination for whale watching and dolphin spotting and February is the perfect time to be there.

This is the middle of the whale watching season here, which runs from November through to April, and concludes with the dry season.

March in Sri Lanka

March is the last month of the dry season in the southwest before the monsoon winds arrive bringing with them rainstorms for the next half of the year. 

This is your last opportunity to enjoy the southwest at its best because the weather is hot but the humidity has yet to arrive. 

Again, head to Mirissa for the whale and dolphin tours, or explore Yala National Park to see the flora and fauna.

While Yala might be dry, and the scenery isn’t that great to look at, the wildlife is easy to spot because of the lack of greenery.

As watering holes empty, the animals will congregate around particular areas where they can find water and hence they’ll be easier to find when on safari.

April in Sri Lanka

April is still a good time to visit the southwest beaches, even as the monsoon begins to arrive along the coast. 

It’s still sunny and temperatures are climbing ever higher, so you can spend your days lazing on the beaches. 

It’s a good time for wildlife spotting too, so head to the national parks for some safari adventures. 

Temperatures can be high in April though, so you might want to consider heading inland and into the more mountainous regions.

This is the best time to visit Sri Lanka to see iconic highland destinations such as Ella or Kandy and to rise the famous picturesque terrain into the Central Highlands.

At higher elevations, you’ll escape the worst of the April heat, and did some great hiking spots and tea plantations to visit.

May in Sri Lanka

May is when the southwest monsoon really begins to hit home and this is a month when the low season begins in Sri Lanka. 

But while the tourist destinations in the south and west might be rainy and wet, it’s a different story in the north.

In fact, this is the best time to visit Sri Lanka to explore the northeast coast, where you’ll find a dry climate and hot and sunny days as the monsoon ended weeks ago here.

Visit Trincomalee to enjoy the beaches of the east coast and to see the whales as they migrate here.

If you want to escape the heat, then head into the highlands, although be prepared for a few rain showers here too.

June in Sri Lanka

June is still low season across Sri Lanka because the monsoon is ravaging the south and west and temperatures across the country are at their highest. 

If you visit in June, you’ll get some bargains on flights and accommodation, but you’ll want to stay as far north as you can to escape the rains and the heat. 

July in Sri Lanka

The low season trend continues through July, as the rain cause havoc along the southwest coastlines. 

Again, head north and get off the beaten track as you’ll find a wealth of intriguing destinations to discover in the dry and sunny parts of the country.

Explore ancient cities or go whale watching along the coast and see a part of Sri Lanka that few tourists ever make the effort to visit, at a time when there are few tourists anywhere in the country.

August in Sri Lanka

August is still low season across Sri Lanka however the extremely high summer temperatures are starting to lower and actually, the monsoon in the southwest begins to calm down. 

While there will be rain, it’s not quite so fierce, and the northeast still remains totally dry. 

This is a great month for safari, because in Minneriya National Park the animals are all gathered at the watering holes, and it’s a famed time to see the herds of elephants as they move across the plains. 

In Yala National Park in the youth, the lighter rains make the park more accessible while the flora is at its most extant and green, after the heavy monsoons.

It’s a lovely time to explore this part of Sri Lanka, as most tourists will only ever experience safaris in the dry season.

September in Sri Lanka

The east coast is on top form in September, because while the southwest still experiences rainfall and the north is beginning to be hit by the monsoon too, places like Trincomalee and Arugam Bay at their best. 

The sun is out in force here and you can explore the long coastline and enjoy the spectacular beaches.

You’ll even catch the whales in action too, so take a tour out in search of these beautiful marine mammals. 

The east coast is still developing in terms of tourism, but now is the best time to visit Sri Lanka to see this part of the country while it’s still rustic and authentic. 

October in Sri Lanka

The southwest monsoon will be ending now, so it’s a good time to visit the more touristy parts of Sri Lanka before the high season crowds arrive. 

The weather is still hot and muggy but it’s mostly dry, and you’ll see Yala National Park as it’s resplendent with green scenery. 

The east coast is also beautiful in October and it’s the last chance to experience the beaches before the northeast monsoon hits. 

November in Sri Lanka

November is the tentative start to the high season in Sri Lanka because temperatures are lower and the climate is cooler. 

The southwest is now dry and sunny and attracting tourists, but it’s still a good time to explore before the December rush begins during the Christmas holidays. 

December in Sri Lanka

This is the best time to visit Sri Lanka to explore the southwest coast, as temperatures are hovering between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.

It’s incredibly dry and sunny and the perfect time to be relaxing on the beaches. 

Along the southwest coast, you’ll find whales and dolphins and it’s a great time to take a boat tour.

Best cultural things to do in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Visit the sacred temple of the tooth relic.

One of the must visit places in Kandy, Sri Lanka is the Temple of the Tooth Relic .

Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the most important Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka . And that is because it houses the tooth relic of Lord Buddha – one of the major reasons why Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site today.

The temple was consecrated in late 16th century and is housed in the royal palace complex of the erstwhile Kandyan Dynasty. Devotees throng to the temple throughout the year. Rituals happen thrice during the day – at dawn (5:30am – 7:00am), morning (9:30am – 11:00am), and evening (6:30pm – 7:30pm). The temple is also the place where the annual procession of Kandy Esala Perahera starts every year.

Apart from being a strong religious symbol, Sri Dalada Maligawa holds great cultural significance too. The architecture of the temple is stunning whereas the wall frescoes are simply mind-blowing. The temple’s Audience Hall, also known as Magul Maduwa, is what inspired the Independence Monument in Colombo. This is where the Kandyan kings held court as well as the place where the ill-fated Kandyan Convention was signed.

Since this is a holy place, you are expected to dress modestly . Women must cover their shoulders and knees. Men cannot wear shorts or hats/caps. Wear light colors (white is the preferred color) to blend with the locals. You can buy some flowers at the entrance to offer to the gods.

The temple is open from 5:30am – 7:30pm every day.

Explore the World Buddhism Museum

The World Buddhism Museum or the International Buddhist Museum is located in the premises of the Temple of the Tooth Relic. It is kind of a hidden gem in Kandy because rarely people venture out of the temple to see what other attractions the place holds.

Housed in a former palace of the erstwhile Kandyan monarch, the Buddhism Museum is one of its kind. It traces the history of Buddhism right from its origins in India to its spread around the world.

Rooms are divided by countries and the role they played in the spread of Buddhism. The museum is amazing for anyone in love with the history of religion and civilizations.

Entrance is included in the temple ticket. Once you are done exploring the temple and paying your respects, you really must check out this unique museum in Sri Lanka.

The International Buddhist Museum is open from 7:00am – 7:30pm every day.

Right next to the World Buddhism Museum is the National Museum of Kandy which is a beautiful chronicler of the city’s history.

The Kandy National Museum is not as elaborate as the National Museum in Colombo but it is a charming addition to your Kandy itinerary. The museum is housed in a palace called the “Palle Vahala” or the “lower palace” built by Sri Wickrama Rajasinha of the Kandy Dynasty. Apparently, the Palle Vahala was home to the queens of the Kandyan kings.

The museum is home to more than 5000 artifacts from the Kandyan era.

Attend the annual Esala Perahera festival in August

If you are in Sri Lanka in July-August, it is a great idea to head to Kandy for the Esala Perahera – a religious and cultural extravaganza filled with colors, music, and dance.

The Esala Perahera is a grand Buddhist festival that is celebrated every year in Kandy in the months of July – August. The festival pays homage to Lord Buddha and his Sacred Tooth Relic that is housed in the Kandy Temple of the Tooth.

The festival is a 10-day extravaganza of festivities filled with traditional music, dance, and acrobatics. Perhaps the most iconic event is the parade of the ceremonial elephant who carries the relic casket. He is followed by Kandyan dancers and musicians who perform to enthral the audience. Experiencing the Esala Perahera in Kandy is an absolutely must-have cultural experience in Sri Lanka .

Watch an enthralling Kandyan dance performance

One of the most enthralling things to do in Kandy is to watch a Kandyan dance performance . It is probably the most unadulterated way of immersing in the local culture.

Kandyan Dance is a traditional dance form of Sri Lanka that originated in the Central Highlands. The performance is usually a combination of 5-6 dances that include masked dances, acrobatics, plate spinning, jokers, and other folklores. The fire dance at the end of the show is absolutely thrilling. I am wondering if it has any connection with the fire dance of Kecak performances in Bali – definitely something for me to dig deeper into.

Traditionally, Kandyan dances were performed by male dancers but have now become more inclusive with a couple of female sequences as well.

One place in Kandy where you can enjoy a one-hour Kandyan dance is the Red Cross Society Hall (please find directions in our interactive map below). Every day, the show begins at 5:00pm and gets done by 6:00pm. Please book ahead of time to get the prime front row seats – your tour guide or hotel should be able to help you with that. While entering the hall, be sure to grab a leaflet that explains the significance of every dance sequence.

Hike to the Big Buddha Statue of Kandy

Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue or the Big Buddha is one of Kandy’s most iconic attractions . Located atop a hill, the Big Buddha is white in color and nearly 88ft tall. The temple that houses the statue is called Sri Maha Bodhi Vihara.

Apart from being a religious site in Kandy, the Big Buddha is also the best place to get some stunning views of the Kandy city and the hills that surround it. It is also one of Kandy’s most Instagrammable locations.

Visit the British Garrison Cemetery

The British Garrison Cemetery is a small, European-styled graveyard dating back to the 19th century. This was the main burial spot for British nationals who died from tropical diseases during the British colonization of Sri Lanka. It is home to nearly 200 graves.

The cemetery is located very close to the Temple of the Tooth, which means you can easily club it with your temple visit. It is open from 8:30am – 5:00pm every day.

Day trip to Sigiriya

If you are in Kandy, be sure to head to the Lion Rock in Sigiriya for a day trip. Sigiriya Lion Rock, or Sinhagiri, was once home to a rogue king of the Sinhala Dynasty. His name was Kashyapa I and he had risen to power by killing his father and banishing his half-brother.

Because power was so dear to him, Kashyapa I built his fortress on top of the invincible Sigiriya rock and made it look like a crouching lion to scare off his enemies. This unique world heritage site has a fascinating history (you can read all about it on my Sigiriya travel guide here ) and 1200+ steps to climb .

The best part is that Sigiriya can be easily visited on a day trip from Kandy. You can do it on a day tour from Kandy or ask your hotel to arrange for a taxi and a driver . Tours usually combine it with a visit to the Dambulla Cave Temples to make for a fruitful day out.

Fun things to do in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Stroll through peradeniya botanical gardens.

If there is one thing to do in Kandy apart from visiting the Sacred Temple of the Tooth, it has to be taking a stroll through the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya.

As you travel to Kandy from Colombo, you’ll come across the Royal Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of the ancient city. Located near Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka, the botanical gardens have a rich collection of palm trees, medicinal plants, and orchids. There are more than 4000 plants species here and some of them date back to the 19th century.

Taking a stroll through the garden’s Avenue of Royal Palms is a beautiful experience . Do not forget to walk on the hanging bridge to add some thrill to your Kandy trip. Also, be sure to check out the double coconut palm trees and the awesome bamboo collection. Running on the Great Lawn is something every kid would love to do.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are open every day, 7:30am – 6:00pm. Walking is the best way to explore the park. Since the garden is huge, you can also hire a golf cart for a few hours to show you the highlights. It costs LKR 2000 ($5) for foreigners to enter the park.

Spend some time at Kandy Lake

One of the best free things to do in Kandy is to spend some quality time at the Kandy Lake .

Located in the heart of Kandy city, this enormous lake is too beautiful to miss. The real name of the lake is Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk and is right in front of the Temple of the Tooth. Taking a walk around this stunning lake or riding around it in a tuk-tuk is a great way to experience the true vibes of Kandy.

I have been to the lake several times but my favorite visiting time is in the spring (months of Feb and March) when pink trumpet flowers are in full bloom around the lake. Come here then to capture some of the best shots for your Gram!

Head to Arthur’s Seat

Arthur’s Seat is one of Kandy’s most popular attractions because it is the best lookout point in the city. Located on the southwestern banks of Kandy Lake, Arthur’s Seat offers unparalleled views of the lake and city. It is a great photo spot in the city.

Ride the scenic Kandy to Ella train

Have you seen the pictures of a romantic, blue Sri Lankan train chugging along a rickety, old bridge in the middle of lush green tea gardens? Well, that’s none other than the classical Ella Odyssey Train that passes over the Nine Arches Bridge in Sri Lanka . And, the good news is that you can board this train in Kandy and go all the way to Ella and beyond.

I recommend boarding the Ella Odyssey at Kandy and getting off at Demodara because you’ll find the best attractions between these two stations. You can get the best views of Adam’s Peak, Elgin Waterfalls, and St. Clair’s Falls from the train. Plus, you’ll get a chance to get off the train on the Nine Arches Bridge and get some wonderful pictures.

Even though the Ella Odyssey is a major attraction in Sri Lanka, it is hard to get the tickets on your own. You cannot purchase them online (at least not yet!). You’ll need to get the tickets through a local travel agent or book a reserved tour like this one .

Join a street food tour of Kandy

I love Sri Lankan food . In fact, I love food! Everywhere! Quite naturally, I am always drawn to food tours across Sri Lanka. Kandy was no exception.

It was fun trying the local food in Kandy. Whether it was the vadai at the Hela Bojun Hala or drinking a king coconut from the street vendors, I always made sure that I had a taste of Kandy on my lips. And you should too, if you are a foodie like me.

You’ll try unique fruits, traditional buffalo yoghurt, cassava chips, vegetable rotis, and sip some famous Ceylon tea. Stay in a hilltop hotel in Kandy

If you are planning to spend at least a day (which you should) in Kandy, I highly recommend staying in a hilltop hotel just for the views.

Kandy is a very picturesque town. Built around the beautiful Kandy Lake, the city has grown over hills and cliff tops surrounding this water body. Therefore, it is a good idea to stay in a hilltop hotel for some gorgeous views.

If you are willing to splurge on a luxurious room with an ensuite bath tub that overlooks the hills, nothing better than that. My personal favorite Kandy hotel is the Theva Residency which has some of the most stunning views of the valley. Book their uber-luxurious rooms (Rooms #1 and #2) because they are spacious, equipped with in-room jacuzzis, and boast of splendid views. Plus, they have all the privacy you’d ever need.

If you are looking for budget hotels in the Kandy hills, then Pine Hill Residence and Kandy Hills are both great options.

Day trip to Nuwara Eliya

When in Kandy, you can also do a quick day trip to Nuwara Eliya, the famous tea estate town of Sri Lanka. It has got a age-old colonial feel about it and is often called the Little England of Sri Lanka.

There are so many amazing things to do in Nuwara Eliya that you’ll find a day too short to see all of its attractions. But a day is better than none, of course. I highly recommend visiting Lake Gregory for thrilling water activities, checking out colonial mansions and the cute post office, and shopping at the Central Market when visiting Nuwara Eliya.

Top adventure things to do in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Try the knuckles mountain trail trek.

One of the top things to do near Kandy, Sri Lanka is to head to the Knuckles Mountain Range for an energizing trek.

Filled with impressive peaks and stunning montane forests, Knuckles Mountain is a hiker’s paradise. There are as many as 34 mountains with 9 iconic peaks. Additionally, the mountain range is home to a large percentage of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity.

There are 30+ hiking trails in the Knuckles Range and the best way to access them is by joining a trekking tour with a knowledgeable local guide . One of my favorite places to stay in Kandy is the Theva Residency , a 5-star luxury hotel that features an outdoor pool and a terrace. Their rooms are gorgeous with the most stunning views of the mountains . Plus, some of them feature in-room jacuzzis with a view !

Have a look at the picture below. It is not a great picture because I arrived in the evening and my camera wasn’t suited for low light photography but you get the gist. An in-room jacuzzi with the best views during the day.

The setting is also quite romantic if you are traveling to Kandy with your better-half. No doubt, couples particularly like the Theva Residency . Also, the food at the Theva Residency is delicious, especially if you love local Sri Lankan delicacies.

Practical information for visiting Kandy, Sri Lanka

Best time to visit kandy.

The best time to visit Kandy, Sri Lanka is from December – March when the weather is dry and the temperatures are mild. Kandy is always a little colder than the rest of the country. So, get a light jacket with you or prepare to layer up.

I personally like going to Kandy in February – March because that is the spring season in Kandy. You’ll find all kinds of flowers in full bloom. Kandy Lake looks incredible with loaded pink trumpet trees serenading its shores.

July – August is also a wonderful time to visit because this is when the annual festival of Esala Perahera takes place every year. So, if you are a bit of a culture vulture like me, then you’ll want to visit Kandy during that time.

How to get to Kandy in Sri Lanka?

In order to get to Kandy in Sri Lanka, you’ll first need to get to Colombo and then take a taxi from Colombo to Kandy. The closest airport to Kandy is the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.

Driving time from Colombo Airport to Kandy is 3 hours and from Colombo city to Kandy is around 3.5 hours. Be prepared for some traffic along the way. The drive can easily stretch to 4 hours.

How to get around Kandy?

The easiest way to get around Kandy is by tuk-tuk. Tuk-tuks are easily available and cheap to hire. You can even rent one with a driver for the day and go sightseeing in Kandy.

Brief About Kandy

Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage City which is situated in the central province of Sri Lanka. Not only is it the capital of the Central Province. The distance to Kandy from Colombo is 116km and from Dambulla is 72km. It is a mountainous city, with an elevation of 447m above sea level. The River Mahaweli flows near the city. It is a beautiful place to visit as a traveler. There are so many places to visit around Kandy .

Kandy is well known for the Temple of the Tooth Relic. It is a significant place for all Buddhists in the world. They believe the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha has been placed there. A large number of devotees annually visit Kandy to visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic. As well, the city is historically important in Sri Lanka’s history. It was the capital of the last Sinhala kingdom, the Kandyan Kingdom, which was laterally captured by the British in 1815. The Kingdom survived for almost 350 years.

What is the perfect time to visit Kandy?

January to April period

May to august period.

• September to December period

This is considered the best time to visit Kandy. There are very few rainy days in those time periods. Therefore, it is the perfect time to go hiking and trekking in the area. January and February are fairly cold. But you can expect much higher temperatures in the March and April months. With winter coming to Europe, you can see many tourists coming to the city in this period.

This is not the best time to visit Kandy. The South-West monsoon is active in the country, and the city and surrounding areas receive much higher rainfall. The rainy days are high in most months. It is not a suitable time period for both hikers and trekkers. However, there are so many tourists who come to the city in August because of the Kandy Procession. It is one of the most must-see cultural festivals in Sri Lanka.

September to December Period

This is not a bad or perfect time to visit Kandy. But you can expect a few rainy days in every month of this period. It is the time when the city receives rainfall from the North-East monsoon. The monsoon brings rainfall to a lot of areas of the country. As well, this is not a good time period for hikers and trekkers.

The climate of Kandy

As we mentioned earlier, the city is situated on a hilly terrain. So, the temperature is a bit lower when compared with the coastal cities of the country. The average annual temperature is around 24’C. Both January and February are the coldest months. However, you can expect much higher temperatures in the months of March, April, August, and September. But don’t expect such a large difference as a city in the northern hemisphere.

The Kandy area receives rainfall all around the year. The average annual rainfall is around 2000mm. It receives rain from both the North-East and South-West Monsoons. April, July, October, and November months receive much higher rainfall than the other months. Therefore, you should be concerned about this fact if you are doing hiking or trekking. Wind speed is very low in the surrounding areas throughout the year. All in all, we can say that the area has a very friendly climate for living or traveling. Climate is not a huge factor when considering the best time to visit Kandy.

Places to Visit in Kandy

Kandy is a city which belongs to the Sri Lankan Cultural Triangle. Therefore, there are so many cultural and historical places to visit in the surrounding areas. As well, you can find so many spots for hiking, trekking, and camping. Also, you should note that you can find a few beautiful waterfalls within a few kilometers of the city. The BEST Kandy Itinerary: 10+ Places to Visit in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Kandy is the cultural home of Sri Lanka and is considered one of the most sacred places in the world amongst the Buddhist community.

Home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic and famous botanical gardens, Kandy has been hailed as one of the top destinations in Sri Lanka thanks to its historical value.

It’s certainly an interesting city with everything wrapped into one: It’s chaotic, noisy, and vibrant, yet you don’t have to go too far to find peace and serenity.

But, you might be asking yourself “Is Kandy worth all the hype?” If you only have a few days in Sri Lanka, should you visit Kandy over other attractions in the hill country or the cultural triangle?

I spent 4 weeks in Sri Lanka, covering most of the country, and have highlighted the best places to visit in Kandy for adventure travelers, backpackers, families, and those looking to learn more about the history and culture of Sri Lanka.

How Long to Spend in Kandy, Sri Lanka

While there are so many beautiful places in Kandy, how long you spend here depends entirely on how much time you have in Sri Lanka.

If you have less than 2 weeks and you’re in search of hiking trails and dreamy beaches, then give Kandy a skip altogether – yep, it wasn’t my favorite place to visit but you’ll love it if you’re looking for a true cultural and spiritual experience.

If you have 3 weeks (or more) in Sri Lanka , I recommend you spend one day in Kandy. This will equate to 2 nights as you’ll arrive on the afternoon of the first day, explore the best things to do in Kandy on the second, and leave early on day three.

Pro Tip: Knuckles Mountain Range is just outside the city and if you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, it’s the best place to visit in Kandy. Unfortunately, I was unable to do it – keep reading to see why.

How to Get to the best places in Kandy

Whilst Kandy may be the second-largest city in Sri Lanka, it doesn’t have that massive city vibe. This makes it easy to visit the top tourist places in Kandy on a free walking tour, as I did.

Walking from one part of the city to the other allows you to see a side of Kandy that you may have missed otherwise.

You’ll walk through the streets as families go about their daily lives, you’ll watch as the locals play an intense game of street cricket, and you’ll pass school kids as they rush to their classes.

If you’re not too keen on walking, you could hail down a tuk-tuk and get a personalized tour of all the beautiful (and hidden) places in Kandy. This shouldn’t cost you more than 3 000 LKR ($15).

Either option is a fun way to explore Kandy like a local.

One Day Kandy Itinerary: The Best Places to Visit in Kandy Sri Lanka

Surrounded by lush mountains and tea plantations, there’s more to Kandy than meets the eye.

The city boasts some pretty impressive historical buildings as well as religious sites and is, of course, the starting point of the famous Kandy to Ella train ride.

I planned to visit the uncommon places in Kandy – you know, those hidden gems that are often missed by other travelers who are in search of Insta-worthy locations instead.

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many of these “off-the-beaten-track” places to visit in Kandy!

Below is my one-day Kandy itinerary but I’ve also included some of the other popular attractions that you might prefer.

1. Walk through Udawattakele Forest Reserve: The most uncommon place to visit in Kandy

• Cost: 650 LKR ($3.5) per person
• Time needed: 2 hours

Situated in the center of Kandy, and overlooking Kandy Lake, lies Udawattakele Forest, also known as the Royal Forest Park of Kandy. It’s a beautiful lush urban jungle at the heart of the bustling city.

It was once the King’s personal garden but has since been made open to the public, offering one of the best places to visit in Kandy.

You only need 2 hours to explore the forest, where you’ll walk beneath a thick canopy of trees and come across numerous monkeys and native bird species. There’s a viewpoint that overlooks Kandy Lake but most interesting was the cave I discovered by following a narrow path leading off the main trail.

Throughout the 4km trail, I came across a handful of other people, none of whom were tourists, so if you’re looking for non-touristy things to do in Kandy, Udawattakele Forest is it!

How to get to Udawattakele Forest

Udawattakele Forest will be the starting point of your free walking tour of Kandy. I suggest you take a tuk-tuk to the entrance which is located here.

2. Visit Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue: The Best views of Kandy

• Cost: 250 LKR ($1.5)
• Time needed: 30 minutes

The Bahirawakanda Vihara Statue is one of the most famous places in Kandy and dominates the city’s skyline.

At 27m in height, it’s one of the tallest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and can be seen in all its might from just about anywhere in Kandy.

The views from the site itself are just breathtaking and overlook the Kandy cricket stadium, Udawattakele Forest, and Kandy Lake.

How to get to the Buddha statue

The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha lies on the opposite side of Kandy to the Udawattakele Forest. It’s a 2.5km walk from the forest to this statue and the walk takes you through the city. The final stretch involves an uphill climb which can be quite tiring for some.

Alternatively, you can take a tuk-tuk.

Pro tip: You need to take off your shoes and wear a sarong to cover your legs before entering the statue premises.

3. Indulge in a delicious Sri Lankan meal

Phew, if you’re following this Kandy free walking tour, you would have walked over 6km’s already!

Reward yourself with a delicious lunch to keep you fuelled for the rest of the day!

I stopped at Nagalingam’s Bhavan, an amazing family-run restaurant in Kandy that serves up the best (and cheapest) local food.

Save this location because it was one of the best places I visited in Kandy.

How to get there

From the Buddha statue, make your way down the hill to Kandy Lake which is 1.5km away. En route, you’ll come across many local restaurants so pop in and order a Sri Lankan curry or Kottu Rotti.

As you get closer to Kandy Lake, you’ll notice the change in energy as the streets become more chaotic and the atmosphere, more cheerful.

4. Hang out at Kandy Lake in the heart of Kandy

• Time needed: 15 minutes

Built in 1807 by orders of the last King of Sri Lanka, Kandy Lake is an artificial lake sitting in the heart of the city.

You can purchase fish food from one of the vendors and feed the many fish that call the lake home. If you’re lucky, you’ll even spot huge monitor lizards swimming in the lake or basking in the sun.

If you’re up for some more walking, why not take a stroll along the path that encircles Kandy Lake. But, the main road runs alongside the walking path so it can get noisy with buses and tuk-tuks honking consistently.

5. Temple of the Tooth Relic: The most sacred place to visit in Kandy

• Cost: 1 500 LKR ($8) per person
• Time needed: 1 hour

Right next to Kandy Lake lies Sri Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Tooth Relic. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most spiritual places to visit in Kandy, if not the whole country!

The stunning golden roof temple is home to the famous tooth of Buddha which is housed in the Royal Palace Complex.

How did Buddha’s tooth get there?

Well, it was initially smuggled into Sri Lanka way back when and was moved around the country before finding its new home in the famous temple in Kandy. It’s a spiritual place with religious fame and you need to show respect by covering your shoulders and legs.

As with Adam’s Peak pilgrimage in Dalhousie , Sri Lankans believe that they should visit the Temple of the Tooth at least once in their lifetime and many people make the long journey to Kandy just to step foot in the holy grounds.

Unfortunately, you can’t actually see the tooth itself as it’s hidden in a golden casket that’s heavily guarded. The temple has been attacked twice, once in 1989 and a second time in 1998, and so security is extremely high.

This scared tooth relic is one of the top tourist places in Kandy so if you’re not a fan of crowds, you might want to leave this off your itinerary.

6. Enjoy a beer at the Stag’s Head Pub in Hotel Casamara

After 6 hours of exploring all the best places to visit in Kandy, you’ll be exhausted and in much need of a drink!

Head to Hotel Casamara which has an awesome rooftop bar overlooking Kandy and treat yourself to an ice-cold Lion beer!

7. Watch the Kandyan dance: The most touristy thing to do in Kandy

• Cost: 1 000 LKR ($5)
• Time needed: 5pm-6pm

You’re going to have to force yourself out of the bar for this one (or stay, and give the Kandyan dance a skip – up to you!)

For a night of cultural dancing, enjoy the Kandyan dance which is a colorful show of acrobatics, dancing, and drumming. This is one of the most popular things to do in Kandy at night and is followed by a short firewalking performance.

Personally, I felt that the performance was a bit too long and repetitive, but it’s only an hour out of your day to support the community and enjoy the local art and culture.

Where to see the Kandyan performances

The Kandyan performances take place at various venues just a stone’s throw away from Kandy Lake.

Kandyan Art Association & Cultural Centre is the most popular of all the venues and attracts busloads of tourists. The performance starts at 17:00 and it’s right next to Kandy Lake.

Kandy Lake Club is a more intimate performance when compared to the above and starts at 17:00, but it’s about a 1km walk from Kandy lake.

Other Popular Places to Visit in Kandy

If you followed my walking tour of all the places to see in Kandy, you’ll be exhausted by the end of the day!

Perhaps you have a bit more time and want to explore a few more Kandy attractions. Or maybe you want to swap the above locations for some other popular places to visit in Kandy.

Royal Botanical Gardens

• Cost: 2 000 LKR ($10)

The Royal Botanical Gardens or Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in Kandy is not only the biggest botanical garden in the country but also the oldest, dating back to 1371.

Home to over 5 000 species of flora and fauna, the gardens boast an impressive collection of orchids and other flowers. Also, keep an eye out for the giant fruit bats!

These botanical gardens are one of the top tourist attractions in Kandy where you can enjoy a tranquil setting amongst the trees so bring a picnic blanket and a book if you’re keen for some downtime.

But, if you only have a one day trip in Kandy, you would need to choose between the popular Botanical Gardens or the less-visited Udawattakele Forest. I opted for the forest and have no regrets!

The Royal Botanical Gardens are a 20-minute drive from the center of Kandy and you can easily hop on a local bus if you’d prefer not to pay for a tuk-tuk.

Head to the bus station at the Kandy Clock Tower and look for the bus to Pilimathalawa. Alternatively, just ask to say, “Botanical Gardens” and the locals will happily point you in the right direction.

Explore Tea Plantations

There’s no arguing that Sri Lanka is one of the biggest tea producing nations in the world and a visit to the county isn’t complete without exploring one of the many tea factories set amongst the lush green hills.

There are several tea plantations you can visit near Kandy, but if you plan on visiting Nuwara Eliya (which was my favorite place in Sri Lanka), I recommend that you rather tour the tea fields there as your Kandy itinerary is already jam-packed.

However, if you have more than one day in Kandy, and you’re not planning on traveling to other parts of hill country, then it’s best to visit a tea plantation from here.

Things to do in Kandy that require a day tour

Explore knuckles mountain range.

Home to cascading waterfalls, lush green hills, and rich in biodiversity and wildlife, Knuckles Mountain Range is one of the best places to visit in Kandy if you’re looking for a secluded outdoor experience.

Situated north-east of Kandy, just a thirty-minute drive from the center, you’ll need a full day to explore Knuckles Mountain Range which will include about 5 hours of trekking through the lush green hills.

It offers a variety of diverse and challenging trails (over 30 to be exact) so you’re guaranteed a thrilling experience away from the crowds. But, a guide is needed as the routes are not signposted and you can easily get lost.

How to plan your trip from Kandy

If you’re backpacking Kandy, this $40 fee for a guide & park entrance may be the deciding factor as to whether you include it in your Kandy itinerary or not.

I really wanted to spend the day hiking through Knuckles Mountain Range but, unfortunately, it had been raining non-stop for the days leading up to my visit to Kandy, and so I was told that it wasn’t a great time to go trekking.

If you only have one day in Kandy, you’ll have the choice of either trekking in Knuckles Mountain Range or exploring the other top attractions. Personally, I think I would have preferred Knuckles – if the conditions were right.

Pro tip: Many travelers opt for a day trekking in Horton Plains to World’s End. If you’re deciding between the two, Knuckles Mountain wins hands down!

Day trip to Sigiriya

If you’re wondering what to do in Kandy as you have a few more days to explore, then I highly recommend taking a day trip to Sigiriya.

Sigiriya is home to the famous Lion Rock, an ancient rock fortress north of Kandy. Overlooking Lion Rock is the stunning Pidurangala Rock which makes for an awesome sunrise hike with panoramic views.

I spent 3 days in Sigiriya and I highly recommend that you add a stop to this small village in your Sri Lanka itinerary. But, if time is not on your side, you may have to opt for a day trip from Kandy instead.

It’s a 2-hour drive from Kandy to Sigiriya and if you’re wanting to do this day trip, rather opt for a tour as public transport will take so much longer.

Kandy to Ella Train

When you’re done exploring the best things to do in Kandy, it’s time to move on to your next destination in hill country.

The best way to get there? The famous Kandy to Ella train ride, of course!

It’s been hailed as one of the most scenic train rides in the world, and the thousands of Insta shots have attracted tourists in their numbers, deservedly so.

But, if you think you’ll easily find a window seat offering picturesque views of the valleys below or that you’ll get to hang out the doors with not a worry in the world, you’re in for a surprise!

The Kandy to Ella train gets packed! So much so that the excitement and rush to get on the train is often more memorable than the actual train ride.

The first train from Kandy to Ella departs at 08:47. Get there by 07:45 to secure tickets.

If comfort is what you’re after, you’ll need to pre-purchase your 1st or 2nd class train tickets here but otherwise, buy a third-class ticket from the Kandy train station.

Sitting with the locals in the back is the best way to experience the Kandy to Ella train!

Best Time to Visit Kandy

The seasons in Sri Lanka are just down-right confusing and no matter when you visit, the weather is bound to be unpredictable.

October and November is the rainy season in Kandy and I can attest to that.

I traveled to Sri Lanka in October and Kandy had experienced heavy rains that month, except the one day I was there! I had struck it lucky and was able to continue with my Kandy free walking tour unaffected by the weather – it was actually scorching hot.

December to April is said to be the best time to visit Kandy as this is the dry season with no rain, but it’s also one of the most popular times to travel to Sri Lanka so be prepared for crowds.

Where To Stay in Kandy

If you’re only spending one day in Kandy, it’s best to book a hotel in the city so that you can easily explore these famous Kandy attractions.

But, just a 10-minute drive from the center, you’ll find gorgeous accommodation options on the hills, overlooking the city. Staying at one of these places offers an escape from the hustle and bustle, which you’ll need after a full day of exploring.

My personal favorite is Resident View Homestay , a beautiful family home just outside the center of Kandy where I spent 2 nights. It’s one of the most affordable places to stay in Kandy and the hospitality of the host was the highlight for me.

How To Get To Kandy

Kandy lies 3.5 hours from the capital city, Colombo. It’s well connected to all destinations in Sri Lanka using public or private transport and is a transit hub for many travelers.

Unfortunately, there’s no airport in Kandy and so air travel isn’t possible

Depending on your time, and budget, there are various ways to get to Kandy.

Private Transfer

I wouldn’t recommend that you drive in Sri Lanka. If you don’t want to use public transport, it’s best to book your transport with a taxi. Book your private transfer here.

The public buses in Sri Lanka are certainly a unique way to experience the country. But they’re a hit and a miss. I was pleasantly surprised when I got on my first bus to find it was air-conditioned and offered a direct trip to my destination.

But this was the first, and last!

The buses can get very crowded and you’ll sit squashed like a sardine with your bags on your lap! The buses also make numerous stops, and so the trip from Colombo to Kandy can take anywhere from 3 -4 hours.

The train ride from Colombo to Kandy isn’t quite as scenic as Kandy to Ella, but it’s extremely affordable and takes 3 hours. Check the train times here.

The train from Ella to Kandy is pretty long (6.5 hours), and it’s best to split it up by staying in Nuwara Eliya or Dalhousie. Check the train times and prices here.

If you’re happy to sit 3rd class (which I did) there’s no need to prebook tickets. But, if you want a comfortable train ride in either 1st or 2nd class, you need to pre-book your tickets here .

Kandy, Sri Lanka: Nice place to visit but not the best

I enjoyed visiting Kandy. Being the second-largest city in Sri Lanka, I expected it to be a lot bigger and more chaotic than it was. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t as hectic as I imagined it to be.

But, Sri Lanka has so much natural beauty and if you’re deciding what to do and see in the country, I wouldn’t include Kandy as one of those bucket-list places to visit.

Best Time To Visit Kandy

The beauty of traveling to Kandy City is that it remains pleasant all throughout the year. The best time to visit Kandy City is from January to May. These months have an average temperature of 26 degree celsius and provide for stable weather conditions during your exciting trip to the city.

Kandy City also has two monsoon seasons, between May and September and another one comes anytime between December and March. However, the rainy season makes the city even more beautiful and does not act as a thorn in your side during your trip.

April to November (19°C to 24°C):

April to November in Kandy City begins and ends with the monsoon seasons. The rainy season makes your trip even more enjoyable with alkes filled to the brim and constant cool breeze blowing at your face. These months also represent the majority of the year and provide for stable weather conditions throughout the year. The temperature in Kandy during these months does not go further that 22 degrees celsius and lets you go out for leisurely strolls outside. October and November have less rainfall frequency and warmer weather conditions as compared to the rest of the month.

December to March (23°C to 27°C):

December to March in Kandy City consists of occasional rains and drier weather conditions. These months have a temperature of less than 27 degrees celsius. So, it does not become unbearable hot and provides for cool and pleasant weather conditions during the mentioned months. Visit to the museums and hiking are the most favorable activities during this time of the year.

The city of Kandy does not specifically have summer seasons or months allocated to sunny days. However, months like June, October and November go upto a maximum of 31 degrees celsius and prove to be the warmest months in the whole year.

Monsoon Season in Kandy

The climate of Kandy City is unique from other places in Sri Lanka. The city has no winter season. The climate throughout the year is measured by the precipitation rate each month. The rainfall intensity throughout the year differs in small numbers. The city usually has only one kind of climate and that is the monsoon season. The monsoon season allows for a more scenic and picturesque view of various hills and water bodies. 7 Things To Do In Sigiriya Sri Lanka

T here are many things to do in Sigiriya Sri Lanka – this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Most people travel here to visit the famous Rock of Sigiriya, but if you give it enough time you’ll discover a beautiful region, with lush nature and hidden gems that all deserved to be explored.

In this post, I highlight all the unmissable things to do in Sigiriya and share some practical information to organize your visit.

7 Great Things To Do In Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Climb sigiriya rock .

One of the top things to do in Sigiriya is climbing/hiking the giant Sigiriya Rock. Upon seeing it, you will completely understand why this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It’s simply unique! If you decide to see just one of all the ancient cities and holy sites, make it this one.

Why is Sigiriya so special? This is a massive column of rock, around 200 meters tall , where a fortress was built right on top. Frescoes were painted around the fortress, as well as a huge mirror wall – though this actually is “just” a highly polished rock where apparently the kind could see his reflected image any time he walked by.

The Rock is located at the center of a beautiful garden which is very pleasant to visit, and from where you can reach the lion staircase that goes all the way up the fortress.

TIP: I wholeheartedly recommend hiring a guide or joining a guided tour to visit Sigiriya, so that you can make sense of all there is to see and get useful information that will help you put everything in context.

Practical information for visiting Sigiriya Rock

Opening hours.

The site is open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

It costs $30 USD to enter. The price includes a ticket to visit Sigiriya Museum.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is in the early morning, before the heat becomes unbearable and to lower the chances of being caught by the rain which will inevitably start dropping around midday (I only know too well!). Or else, try to go in the late afternoon, around 4:00 PM when it is a bit cooler.

Climbing the rock

It takes around one hour to climb Sigiriya Rock, longer if you stop along the way. Climbing is not hard – it’s just a series of steps. It may take you longer when it is crowded, as a line will inevitably form and this will move much more slowly.

Climb Pidurangala 

Right in front of Sigiriya, Pidurangala is a smaller, less visited. and significantly cheaper site to visit (it costs less than $3 USD to get in). If the views from Sigiriya are beautiful, the ones from Pidurangala are breathtaking to say the least, especially if you can see Sigiriya from up there. Make sure to climb in time for sunset for a fabulous experience.

To be completely honest, much like other off-the-beaten-path sites of Sri Lanka, Pidurangala is actually way more fascinating than its mainstream equivalent . If you have limited time and if you are traveling on a smaller budget, just go straight to Pidurangala.

TIP: While there are stairs leading up to Sigiriya, the path that leads to Pidurangala is much rougher and I recommend wearing a pair of good shoes to walk up there. You may also need a jacket as it gets very windy in the late afternoon.

Go on a day trip to Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla cave complex and the Golden Temple have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites and are a place of pilgrimage. They are very well preserved – in fact, one of the best-preserved cave temples in Sri Lanka . Since they are located at just a 20-minute drive, visiting is one of the things to do in Sigiriya.

In fact, depending on where you are coming from, you can visit en route on your way to Sigiriya Sri Lanka, as I did – I just left my bags in storage in the bookstore by the main gate.

I must admit it that Dambulla was hardly my favorite place of all the ones I visited in Sri Lanka, and found the $10 USD entry fee a bit overpriced, but I guess that if you are in the area, you should visit. I recommend actually hiring a guide to make a bit more sense of what there is to see – I think that’s the mistake I made, actually!

And on one to Polannaruwa 

Polannaruwa is one of the nicest sites to visit in Sri Lanka. It’s a lovely place to spend a few hours exploring the site – another UNESCO World Heritage Site, in fact! This used to be the royal capital of the Sinhalese and Chola kingdoms, a bustling commercial center, and a religious site around 800 years ago, and nowadays you can see what is left of its splendor in the many ruins of temples and religious buildings.

The site is about one hour drive from Sigiriya, so an easy day trip. The entry fee is $25 USD, but considering that it’s much better to actually have a guide to take you around, I recommend joining a guided tour.

Visit Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is actually a little bit further from Sigiriya compared to Polannaruwa and Dambulla, but it can still be seen on a day trip. It’s an interesting site to visit, with lots of temples and ruins, and locals are often spotted praying.

You can visit independently if you go there by bus and then rent a bike, but I honestly recommend a guided tour or at least hire a guide once there to avoid getting lost (the site is actually very big) and to make a bit more sense of what you are seeing.

Visit Minneriya National Park  

Minneriya National Park is the site of the largest Asian elephant gathering that occurs every year between July and September. You may not visit Sri Lanka at that time of year, but if you want to see elephants in all their glory, one of the things to do in Sigiriya Sri Lanka, is visiting Minneriya. It’s at less than 30 minutes drive, and you’ll be able to see many of them, as well as lots of other wildlife (especially birds).

Once you get to the park, you have to hire a jeep to take you around. I wholeheartedly recommend doing some research beforehand to hire a responsible company, as too many are sadly known for driving recklessly around national parks or getting too close to the elephants causing them discomfort.

Visit Sigiriya Village

Villages in Sri Lanka are usually very rural, but people are so welcoming and the culture so interesting that it’s nice to visit some of them. One of the things to do in Sigiriya is exploring the village. If you manage to arrange a guide you will have higher chances of conversing with the locals, who at times speak little to no English. In some cases, for a small fee, you can even have lunch with a local family.

Practical Information To Organize Your Trip

Where to stay in sigiriya sri lanka .

You won’t really find many good places to stay in Sigiriya village, but the surroundings have some excellent accommodation options with boutique hotels, resorts, and some fantastic eco-lodges where you can completely immerse yourself in nature and disconnect from the rest of the world. Picture places with lush vegetation, no wifi or phone reception, good food, animals roaming about, and just the right amount of pampering.

This is a selection of excellent places to stay in Sigiriya: 

• Back of Beyond Dehigaha Ela is a fantastic eco-lodge where beautiful, comfortable rooms are built on trees or around boulders. It is completely immersed in nature and runs in a sustainable way.
• Aliya Resort and Spa is a fabulous hotel at about 5 km from the site, featuring beautiful rooms and a magnificent outdoor pool.
• Sigiri Rock Side Homestay is an excellent middle-range option, with plain but comfortable and clean rooms.

Since a lot of people visit Sigiriya from Dambulla, I thought I’d also select a few good places to stay in Dambulla:

• Dambulla Rock Arch is a nice hotel close to the center of Dambulla. All rooms have a balcony.

How to get to Sigiriya 

Sigiriya is only a small village so the only buses you’ll find will be those to Dambulla, which is well-connected to Kandy, Jaffna. and Trincomalee.

There are direct buses to Sigiriya from Dambulla that run between 6:30 AM and 6:00 PM. The bus ride is very cheap and should take you around 30 minutes. The bus will drop you off on the main street and from there you’ll have to take a tuk-tuk or walk to your accommodation.

Alternatively, you can take a tuk-tuk directly at Dambulla – the ride should cost you around 1000 rupees, depending on where you asked to be dropped off. Make sure to bargain the prices and triple-check that the driver actually knows where to take you. Oftentimes, tuk-tuk drivers are very keen on offering you a ride but they don’t actually know the address of your hotel and you may be stuck for a while before they find the way there!

How to move around Sigiriya

Chances are you will be staying in one of the many marvelous hotels around Sigiriya rather than in the village itself, which doesn’t have much to offer. If this is the case, you will have to rely on the transportation offered by the hotel in the form of tuk-tuk or private car services to take you around to the best places to visit.

When to visit Sigiriya Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons , and you can break your head trying to plan your trip to avoid them but to make a long story short you won’t be able to. December to March are good months to go, with higher chances of dry weather and sun, but the other side of the coin is that places may be more crowded and prices higher than you had hoped for.

Having said that, just go ahead and do your best trying to avoid the rain, but by all means, go. In any case, keep in mind that it usually starts raining in the early afternoon around 12:00 or 1:00 PM, so if you plan to leave early in the morning for your visits, you will be done when it starts raining!

Hi, we were married in the Bayroo Hotel Sri Lankain 1999. This year is our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Unfortunately the hotel was badly damaged in the Tsunami (I have always thought about the staff there, if they got to safety).

We fly into Colombo the middle of August. Our intention was to go straight to Beruwela and spend time there as a base going to see the places we visited all that time ago. Then spending 2 days in Colombo before flying back. I was also looking at some festivals, I believe in Kandy .

Can I please ask suggestions from you, what you would do and see? Thank you so much x
