Learn more about Scotland

Local culture.

Some might know the Scots, as they are fondly referred to, for their tartan kilts, bagpipe playing, whisky or delicious shortbread, but there is a lot more to this British nation than these clichés.

The people of Scotland are a mixture of Scottish,  British  and several minority immigrant groups. Many of Scotland’s traditions have roots in Celtic heritage. A large portion of the population are Christian, with some Catholics and others who make up the Kirk, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. The Scottish are famous for their polite and friendly nature, stoic attitude and good sense of humor.

Soccer or football as it is known locally is a very popular sport, with rugby also being widely watched. For literature fans, the Harry Potter book series is deeply connected with the city of Edinburgh, as it was here that author JK Rowling lived when she wrote most of the books. You can visit the cafes where she wrote as well as see many of the places that inspired parts of her stories, including cemeteries and other buildings.

Geography and environment

Scotland is the most northern part of Great Britain and borders England. The low mountains of the highlands make up 60 per cent of Scotland’s land. Scotland’s flora is similar to most of northern Europe with forests, rugged coasts and moors. There are 62 different species of wild mammals in Scotland, common ones include: grouse, wild cats and off the coast there are many seabirds, seals and dolphins.

The climate of Scotland is classified as temperate, which means it has distinct seasonal changes and wider ranges of temperatures throughout the year. In winter, average temperatures are between five and seven degrees Celsius (41 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit) and in summer between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). The western highlands experience a lot of rain throughout the year, but other areas of Scotland receive much less rain.

If you’re looking to buy authentic Scottish wares, there are options aplenty in the capital city of Edinburgh and other large cities like Glasgow.

If you are after something special, some Edinburgh Crystal, which is owned by Waterford Wedgewood makes an excellent luxury souvenir. Deck yourself out with a set of new drinking glasses, bowls or for something really different – a crystal bell.

If you’re after a gift or souvenir that is a little more edible, you can’t go past a bottle of authentic Scottish whisky. Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a popular choice and whether you’re a connoisseur or a total whisky novice, the local proprietors will love talking you through the different tipples – they are a passionate lot.

If you have family heritage in Scotland, it can be a fun exercise to hunt down your clan tartan. But even if you don’t have one, a woollen scarf, hat or if you’re feeling brave, a kilt, is a distinctly Scottish piece of attire to add to your wardrobe.

Festivals and events

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is on during August each year and is a massive global arts and cultural event. It takes places in over 300 venues around Edinburgh and includes a range of performances and experiences across theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.

Hogmanay Street Party

Hogmanay is a traditional Scottish celebration that takes place over New Year’s. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party is a three-day festival that runs at various locations across the city. With multiple stages with entertainment set up, a torchlight procession and plenty of opportunities for a ‘wee dram’, tickets for this festival are highly sought after and can sell out months in advance.

Highland Games

The Highland Games are held in spring and summer and are one of Scotland’s most iconic events. There are many traditional athletic events like tug-of-war and caber toss, where competitors dress in traditional kilts and spectators enjoy all the social and cultural festivities that come with it, including traditional food, drinks and music.

The Glasgow Whisky Festival

If you’re heading to Glasgow as well as Edinburgh (and you should!) the Whisky Festival is a great time to go. A showcase of Scottish and specifically Glaswegian distillers is the focus, but there is also a celebration of international whisky too, with attendees from all over the world. It is Scotland’s national drink after all…

Scottish food

The Scottish food scene is garnering international attention thanks to Scotland's elite chefs like Gordon Ramsay (Scottish born, even if he did spend his schoolyears in England), Nick Nairn and Andrew Fairlie. These culinary wizards are taking the country's incredible natural produce – beef, venison and seafood – and bringing us a whole new era of more refined Scottish cuisine. However, if you’re looking for some traditional Scottish fare, here are some dishes you must try.

It might not sound very appealing but if you’re a meat eater, you might surprise yourself by enjoying haggis too. Haggis is made of sheep or calf offal, mixed with oatmeal and seasoning before being boiled in a bag (although traditionally it was boiled in the lining of an animal’s stomach). The overall effect is not dissimilar to a sausage with a grainier texture and is often served alongside a traditional roast dinner.

Scottish porridge

A traditional breakfast food, Scottish porridge differs slightly from the standard oatmeal you might be used to eating at home. It has been a population dish for centuries and traditionally should be eaten out of a wooden bowl, with everyone dipping their oats into a communal bowl of cream (for some reason you should also eat it standing up). The preparation is also quite unique – traditionally it should be stirred with a wooden rod called a spirtle and only ever stirred clockwise with your right hand, unless you want to incur the wrath of the devil. While you might put sugar on your porridge at home, in Scotland it’s served with a generous pinch of salt!

A traditional Scottish shortbread is a simple biscuit cake with only three ingredients. Butter, sugar and flour. Cover it in sugar and cut the cake into wedges while it’s still hot and it will cool into delicious, crumbly triangle-shaped biscuits. It’s all in the texture…

Scotch pies

A scotch pie is a meat pie, traditionally filled with mutton or other mincemeat. It is double crusted, single portion pie that is often enjoyed at soccer (football) games, which has earned it the nickname of ‘football pie’. The lid of the pie is slightly sunken from the crust, to allow space for condiments to be put on top.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scotland

If you're thinking of visiting Scotland, you might have a few questions. For your convenience we’ve collected the most asked ones so check our FAQs below. You can also find more detailed information in our Scotland Travel Guide and for booking and payment information, see our general FAQ page.

1. Is it safe to visit Scotland?

Yes, Scotland is a safe place to visit. The Scottish people are famously welcoming and hospitable to travellers. Of course, you should take standard travel precautions when in the bigger cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Should you find yourself in an emergency during your stay, you can contact your travel consultant on our 24 hour helpline. If it’s the local emergency services that you need, call 999 from any phone to get in touch with ambulances, fire and rescue, coastguard and the police. For more information about safety in Scotland, check out our travel guide .

2. Do I need a visa to visit Scotland?

Whether or not you need a visa to visit Scotland depends on your nationality and the length of your stay. If you’re an American, Canadian, Australian or European citizen, you do not require a visa. You will only need a valid passport.

If you’re from another country, you may need a visa to visit Scotland, unless you have dual UK citizenship status. These nationalities include:

You can answer a couple of quick questions on the UK government website to check if you need a visa .

3. How many days do you need to visit Scotland?

The amount of time you will need in Scotland depends on the attractions and areas you want to visit.

If you want a comprehensive tour, travelling across the country and including many of the Scottish islands, we’d recommend you take two weeks. This ensures you’re not rushing through destinations. Longer tours like this also showcase the best of the coasts, lochs, national parks, and places like the famed Orkney archipelago.

If you’re looking for a shorter stay, but still want plenty of sightseeing, we also have shorter, action-packed tours. These take one week or less and show you the most popular Scottish sights, such as the stunning Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Glenfinnan and more.

4. Can I tour Scotland on my own?

Touring Scotland by yourself is a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and solo travel is an option many of our customers choose. If you’re looking for a flexible road trip where you set the pace and pick out all of the attractions that you want to see, then we’d recommend our top-rated self drive packages .

However, if you want a guide to accompany and teach you about each destination then a private tour would mean the convenience of a personal tour guide at a speed that suits you as well as a local knowledge of hidden gems.

Our solo travellers also come back from our guided small group tours with smiles on their faces and plenty of good memories. With a local guide to lead you and a maximum of 15 fellow explorers, you’ll always have company.

5. What is the best way to travel around Scotland?

This really depends on the type of travel experience you want for your trip. On a guided group tour , you’ll get to experience the sights in the company of like-minded travellers. We have carefully vetted and tested our local suppliers and promise that your tour group will always be small (a maximum of 15) so you receive the best and most personal service.

On the other hand, if you would like to see Scotland privately and at your own speed, then a self drive tour is best. With a rented car you’ll have more opportunities to stop for photos and go to viewpoints that aren’t always noted on the map. You also wouldn’t be bound to time limits and would have the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.

A privately guided tour is the best combination of the two and would see you or your chosen travelling party accompanied by an expert local travel guide where you set the pace as you see fit. You get to enjoy the personal one-to-one travel experience of a small group, but also keep the autonomy of self-drive tours.

6. What side of the road do drivers use in Scotland?

Motorists drive on the left side of the road in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Remember to occasionally check your position in traffic, especially in the countryside where roads are often narrow and winding. For travellers used to driving on the right, we advise booking an automatic transmission car, not a manual, for an easier drive.

7. What is the North Coast 500?

The North Coast 500 (also known as NC500 or the Scotland 500) is Scotland’s answer to Route 66, and is the ultimate Scottish road trip. The route is secluded, taking you along the stunning North Coast and through the Northern Highlands, where you’ll experience the wild and natural beauty of Scotland first hand.

Read our North Coast 500 guide for more information.

8. When is the best time to visit Scotland?

Deciding when to visit Scotland depends on the sights you want to see and the seasons you prefer.

If you want a festive experience or want to celebrate the new year (or in Scotland, Hogmanay) then visit in the winter or autumn seasons for crisp chilly days and possible snowfall, perfect for getting a hot chocolate and going exploring.

If you’re keen to have longer days and see lush green landscapes in a milder climate, then a spring or summer visit is for you. Keep in mind, Scottish weather could often be described as “four seasons in a day”. You can’t always depend on a forecast and should bring along waterproofs just in case.

Read our blog article for detailed info on the best time to visit Scotland .

9. What are the must visit places in Scotland?

Scotland has a wealth of history, architecture and natural beauty so there’s always a great day out to be had and a new area to visit – despite this, we have collected the most visited and highly rated destinations by our travel agents and customers.

The must-visit places in Scotland include:

10. Where is the best scenery in Scotland?

We may be biased but we think there is beautiful scenery across Scotland. Even the drive to your next destination will mean you pass by mountains, lochs and rolling hills. However, the most visited sights are found in the Highlands and islands, and along the coasts. Why not check our recommended Scottish attractions to see what Scotland has to offer?

The best scenery in Scotland includes:

11. Can I customise my tour package?

Our local experts have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to you, ensuring every sight or attraction you visit is one that you won’t forget. When creating packages, we plan routes extensively with this in mind so that our guests see the best of Scotland.

Should there be anything in particular you’re keen to see or areas you want to visit, though, get in touch with us. We can also add extra nights to your itinerary, so you can see more of Scotland. Alternatively, you can request a custom tour and your travel consultant will work with you to create your ideal trip across Scotland.

12. When should I organise my flight tickets?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Why? Once you’ve been introduced to your travel consultant, you’ll have all the information you need to make informed choices on timings. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

13. What should I pack to visit Scotland?

In Scotland, it’s not unusual to experience all four seasons in one day. So, no matter the season, you should have a range of essential items in your luggage:

An umbrella could be handy, and bird watchers may wish to bring binoculars. You may also need a UK travel adapter, which you can buy at the airport or in Edinburgh shops after you arrive. For more information, read our useful electricity information and packing guide .

Portree Bay, Scotland

Scotland vacations 2024 & 2025

  • Isle of Skye

The last true wilderness of the British Isles, Scotland’s Highlands have the sort of boreal vastness that reminds you of Canada  or Alaska. Our specialists are passionate about Scotland’s landscapes and can show you the best ways to experience them, tailor-making your stay to include hikes along far-flung lochs, wildlife tracking with a photography expert or exploring under the wing of a countryside ranger.

They’ll also help you dig deeper into Scotland’s proudly distinct cultural traditions, from bagpiping to single malt whisky production, and an entangled, sometimes bloody history with England that’s still strongly felt by Scots. Aside from its mountainous terrain, Scotland boasts modern, forward-looking cities. The capital, Edinburgh , mixes history, a dramatic setting atop a volcanic plug, and a vigorous arts scene that culminates in the annual Edinburgh International Festival and the alternative Fringe.

Whatever you decide to do, our specialists will ensure you make the most out of your vacation to Scotland.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Scotland

Scotland’s fresh, seasonal produce and wonderful distilleries provide great discoveries for food and drink lovers. With such a long coastline, fish and seafood is particularly good, and you’ll find smokeries in many small communities. Also look out for Cullen skink, a thick soup made with potatoes, smoked haddock, and cream.

Haggis, Scotland’s national dish, tastes far better than it sounds. A mixture of sheep's offal, onion, spices, and oats, it’s traditionally tied up in the lining of a sheep's stomach. You’ll often find it served with mashed neeps and tatties (rutabaga and potatoes). Porridge, boiled Scottish oats, is a staple on breakfast menus but is usually served salted rather than sweet.

Whisky is another local mainstay, and you’ll find distilleries across the country. The water source, distilling process, and ingredients used can result in distinct varieties of whisky in different regions, some mild and peaty, others strong and smoky.

English is spoken in Scotland. You’ll also see Scots Gaelic, a Celtic language once spoken across the country, on road signs and you may hear it spoken, especially in the Highlands and Islands. The country’s third language is Scots, which includes a wide range of regional vocabulary. Accents in Scotland can be strong, and many Gaelic and Scots words are used in spoken English, making the singsong lilts a challenge to decipher at times.

Scotland’s currency is the pound sterling (GBP). Scottish bank notes have their own design, however, and although they can be used elsewhere in the UK, smaller retailers might be reluctant to accept them. ATMs can be found all over Scotland, but you may not need much cash because most places accept credit and debit cards.

In Scottish restaurants, a tip of 10-15% is considered standard. Some restaurants will automatically add a gratuity to your total, and if so, no additional tip is needed. Tipping in pubs and bars is not expected. Tipping your tour guide or driver is always appreciated but is at your discretion.

Scotland’s raw natural beauty, rich history and culture, and historic cities mean that you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do. Home to some of the UK’s last tracts of wilderness, Scotland is an ideal destination for hiking, with steep mountains, inky lochs, and a varied coastline laced with a network of walking trails. You can take a wildlife cruise along the coast , track wildlife with a photography expert, go fly fishing with a local guide , take a steam train through the Highlands , or cruise around fabled Loch Ness as you listen to the strains of a bagpiper. Explore castles and historic estates, discover street art and musical history, take a tasting trail through Edinburgh , or uncover Islay’s complex history as you wind down country roads to some of Scotland’s most lauded distilleries .

Scotland offers a great range of places to stay, from country mansions and grand castles to sleek urban hideaways and world-class golf resorts. You could choose to stay in a traditional Victorian hotel overlooking the sea on the Isle of Skye, a convivial inn on Loch Lomond , or enjoy baronial grandeur in a 17th-century castle in the Highlands. Gleneagles , a luxury escape set on a rural estate with three golf courses, attracts a wide crowd for its fine dining, indulgent rooms, and range of outdoor pursuits from fishing and shooting to riding and falconry.

In the cities, you’ll find comfortable international chain hotels as well as hotels with more character, such as stylish Georgian townhouses with chic, modern design or local landmark hotels brought up to date. Your specialist can make suggestions, but you’ll find plenty of ideas in our collection of places to stay in Scotland .

Scotland’s compact nature means it’s easy to combine visits to historic Edinburgh or edgy Glasgow with time spent in the remote Highlands or islands. Edinburgh with its lofty castle, evocative old town, and rich cultural scene, is often a first stop on any visit to Scotland. The country’s biggest city, however, is Glasgow , a thriving place known for its live music, street art and distinct character.

Heading north, blue-black Loch Lomond acts as a gateway to the weathered peaks and steep valleys of the Scottish Highlands . Untouched wilderness, wildlife watching, and historic estates await in the Cairngorms, the affluent university town of St Andrews is equally well known for its golf course, while the Isle of Skye with its rock pinnacles, rugged mountains, castles, and distilleries rewards and intrigues on many levels.

The Scottish train system is generally comfortable, and you’ll get to enjoy the scenic views even more if you’re not worrying about driving. Tickets can be booked online in advance and collected at your departure station, and ScotRail offer a number of rail passes, which are good value if you’re planning to travel mainly by train. If you travel outside peak morning and evening hours, you’ll also qualify for discounted tickets. Most trains offer a basic food service, but most passengers take their own food and drink on board.

A direct flight from New York City to Edinburgh in Scotland takes just under seven hours. Flights from the west coast take around 14 hours, but generally have a layover.

The time zone in Scotland is UTC+1 hour. Daylight Savings Time is observed between late-March and late-October.

The best way to get around in Scotland is to drive. With your own car you can easily get between sights and choose when to travel, but you’ll need to be ready to drive on the left.

Scotland’s rail and bus networks also cover most areas, though the Highlands and west coast islands are more difficult to get to by public transportation. We can also arrange private transfers if you prefer.

US citizens visiting the UK do not require a visa for stays of up to six months.

Your doctor can offer the best advice on recommended vaccinations for visiting Scotland. You’ll also find up-to-date recommendations on the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website . Before you start any trip, it’s also a good idea to check you’re up to date on any vaccinations that are recommended at home.

You’ll need at least one blank page in your passport, which should be valid for at least the duration of your stay.

Private Tours of Scotland FAQs

What are the rules when tipping in scotland .

Tipping in Scotland is not compulsory. However in Restaurants it is generally polite to leave at least 10% tip. If you feel you have been provided with exemplary service you may wish to leave more. This is entirely up to you, and you are not obliged to do so.

Bartenders serving drinks in bars and pubs in Scotland don’t expect to be tipped by customers. That being said, tips are always appreciated.

Scotland doesn’t have fixed rules for tipping as our county adopts a much more laid back approach when it comes to tipping. With regards to tipping your walking tour guides or driver tour guides, the answer would be simply whatever you are comfortable with. Again, you are not obliged to tip. But if you feel the level of service has been very good then you may tip as you are feel appropriate.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major Credit and Debit Cards (including AMEX, VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, MAESTRO). This can be done over the phone or online. We also accept payment via Wire Transfer or via Paypal .

Generally we look to included the following in our initial offerings: Accommodation, Private Driver, Executive Vehicle Hire, All Excursions, Tour Guides and 24 hour Private Concierge Service. This is dependant on each specific tour request.

Are Meals Included?

Our travel itineraries always include lunch and dinner recommendations. With our team on hand to book all restaurants for both lunch and dinner. When booking accommodation we will always include Bed & Breakfast, unless otherwise instructed. Lunch and dinner meals are generally not included within our package costs, unless of course specifically requested. We can accommodate special requests for travellers looking to have set menu and wines selected and pre-paid.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Scotland?

The peak times for visitors in Scotland are between April and September. These are the spring and summer months and the weather tends to be warmer and drier. The winter and autumn months in Scotland also offer their own degree of charm, with festivities aplenty. It is to be noted that Scotland has varying weather patterns. However that is all part of the fun when visiting Scotland and why our lands are so beautiful and green.

What Clothes Should I Bring?

Due to the changeable weather here in Scotland, we recommend you bring a variety of clothing. Scotland is known for quick showers, so it is a good idea to bring a water proof jacket. Equally the weather can be warm in summer (reaching 30 degrees) so make sure you bring shorts and T-shirt too. Luxury hotels and restaurants in Scotland are fairly relaxed in terms of dress code but at a minimum we suggest having at the very least a few smart causal outfits.

Our trip, starting and ending in Edinburgh and looping through the Highlands with an emphasis on the Isle of Skye, Inverness, and Speyside, was very enjoyable, much to the credit of our travel agency. We were awed by the sheer beauty of the Highlands, the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people, and the country's fascinating historical sites.  Our culinary experience was outstanding, with a variety of traditional dishes and contemporary cuisine prepared by world-class chefs. As could be expected, distillery visits gave us an opportunity to enjoy a range of whiskey flavors and styles. Jane, the owner of the travel agency, was accommodating in creating the ideal itinerary, finding superb lodging and dining experiences for us, and helping us through last-minute bookings due to a flight cancellation.  Our driver/guide was personable, knowledgeable, timely, and professional. He entertained us with amusing Scottish lore, local and regional information, and eagerly adjusted the itinerary as needed to suit our personal tastes and interests.

Zicasso’s tour operator was nothing short of exceptional to work with. From the early stages of planning, communication was seamless. The lovely travel planner helped plan the most magical trip. Every accommodation was out of this world, the meals were amazing, and the itinerary was outstanding. We traveled with two babies and they helped plan a wonderful, magical trip. We enjoyed Scotland so much and are looking forward to traveling there again with the same travel company! They even planned a sweet surprise for my four-year-old’s birthday that was so special for her. We were just so pleased with everything.

The trip was wonderful and the support from the travel agency was unstinting. From the first day, they were quickly responsive and continually exceeded our expectations. We had no hiccups along the way, so we didn't need to call on them during the trip, but I am confident they would have sorted any issue that arose.  Their reputation was reinforced by our guide in Bath, who said they were a great company to work with and emphasized that anybody who "picked up the phone" would provide the high level of service we'd experienced.

Zicasso’s travel agents were able to meet my budget needs and responded quickly to questions. The hotels they recommended were good to great and the experiences were just enough for us without overbooking our days. Their information on the train travel was lacking, however. In Brussels, it was not indicated which of the three stations we were to use, the transfer time on one trip was too short to make the connection when our train was only a bit late, and the train info for our last leg was totally inaccurate as to times and connection point. Luckily, other trains were available, so it didn’t cost us anything but a little stress and a $10 Uber.

Zicasso’s travel planner provided outstanding support over a year of planning to ensure all was prepared for our trip. Then he went above and beyond to ensure all went smoothly, including picking us up at the airport, giving us a windshield tour of Edinburgh, and safely delivering us to our hotel. When the weather caused a scheduled ferry crossing to be canceled, our travel agent immediately helped us to change our day's plans at no notice. Finally, he took the time to meet us in Glasgow the day before our departure and take us into town for our last day of touring. I can't recommend his company highly enough to folks looking to explore Scotland!

We absolutely loved working with Zicasso’s travel agents. They offered some great experiences and accommodations that I would have never considered, and did it all within our budget. We can't wait to go back to Ireland or make our first trip to Scotland, and I will definitely be calling Zicasso’s company for the next trip!

We took the most amazing trip to Norway to see the Northern Lights. I reached out to Zicasso, who put me in touch with our travel partner and their wonderful travel agent. She put together several options for the trip and we were able to choose the ones that best fit our family’s interests. Once everything was decided, she went to work doing everything. All the bookings, connections, transportation, etc. were handled and I didn't have to worry about any of it. Before the trip, she confirmed all of the details and included everything on an amazing travel app that we used while we were on the trip. I can't say enough about what an amazing experience we had on our trip and working with Zicasso and our tour operator. I have used both companies before and have never been disappointed.

Really enjoyed the tour. I must admit that I was a little disappointed that you could not pick me up in Stirling especially as we passed the Back o' Hill to view the castle. I do appreciate that James had to keep to a time schedule, but it would have saved me about £100. Otherwise I loved the whole experience, and James was lovely. Tell him that I want to know if he has a son or daughter in February, and I wish James and Staph lots of happiness in their new home. Jackie

How to Plan the Perfect Scotland Vacation

From fairy-tale castles to charming small towns, the Scottish countryside is every bit as spectacular as you've heard.

Best Times to Go to Scotland

Best things to do in scotland.

  • Getting to the Scottish Highlands

Where to Stay in Scotland

With its stately castles , glass-like lochs, and voluptuous glens, Scotland has always been a showstopper. The country's magic extends from its quaint small towns to the snow-capped peaks of its romantic, rugged Highlands to its dynamic modern cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. It's home to some of the best national parks in the U.K. and more than 900 offshore islands with extraordinary wildlife like regal red stags, majestic golden eagles, humpback whales, and massive salmon (not to mention the fabled inhabitant of Loch Ness, too).

The raw, poetic beauty of this ancient land — formerly known as Caledonia — is difficult to overstate. If you're hoping to head to the U.K.'s ravishing northern nation, read on for our guide to planning the perfect Scotland vacation.

The bad news is that, like the rest of the U.K., Scotland's weather is far from reliable, even at the height of summer. But as long as you're prepared to accept that and pack a raincoat for the odd shower or two, then you'll be fine from May to September. The smart money is on visiting in June and the first two weeks of July, when Scotland basks in seemingly endless summer evenings (the sun doesn't set until 11 p.m. in some parts of the Highlands) and the British school holidays have not yet begun, so prices remain low.

For winter travelers, Scotland has the U.K.'s best ski resort at Cairngorm Mountain , while the capital, Edinburgh, hosts one of the world's biggest New Year's Eve parties, Hogmanay .

If you like the great outdoors, you'll love Scotland. It's an ideal place for hiking, biking, and generally embracing the wildly beautiful landscape. You can summit magnificent Ben Nevis in a day (the tallest mountain in the U.K., at 4,413 feet), take a ferry out to explore the Hebrides archipelago and its stunning white-sand beaches, tour scores of castles, including the Queen's favorite holiday home, Balmoral (open to the public every April through July), and dive into a quirky food scene encompassing dishes like haggis (an offal and oatmeal combo, which tastes significantly better than it sounds), deep-fried mars bars, and juicy scallops, langoustines, and mussels.

Scotland is also a mecca for both golfers ( St. Andrews Old Course is the headline act) and whisky lovers , with some of the world's best distilleries available to tour, including Johnnie Walker on Edinburgh's lively Princes Street, Glenlivet near pretty Ballindalloch, and the legendary Macallan on a sprawling country estate in nearby Aberlour.

If you enjoy driving, you'll find some of the U.K.'s emptiest, most dramatic roads here, too, (as driven by James Bond in "Skyfall"), including the latest official addition, the North Coast 500 , an action-packed 500-mile route (516 to be exact) featuring mind-boggling coastal scenery, jaw-dropping beaches, rolling hillside, quaint fishing villages, and multiple hidden gems.

And if you prefer your challenges on foot, check out the magnificent West Highland Way , the country's best-loved long-distance walking route. Snaking its way from Milngavie to Fort William, it covers some of Scotland's finest scenery over 96 miles and is normally completed from south to north.

Meanwhile, history buffs will also be agog on any visit to Scotland, thanks to its 3,000-plus castles ( Castle Sween in Argyll is the oldest, dating back to the 1100s), as well as plenty to check out in the winding wynds (narrow lanes) and twisted staircases of Edinburgh's enchanting Old Town. ( Edinburgh Castle , towering over the city, is arguably the grandest in the country, too.)

If you can, make time to visit Perth, the former Scottish capital where kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny and infamous Glen Coe, a beautiful valley full of waterfalls and deer, also known for the brutal clan massacre of 1692 (which inspired the Red Wedding in George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones ).

Where are the Scottish Highlands — and what is the best way to get there?

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

The clue is in its name: the Highlands are the mountainous upper half of Scotland, covering 10,000 square miles of picturesque scenery. The region's lively capital is Inverness , which sits centrally and is a superb base from which to explore, while other highlights include mysterious, misty Loch Ness, majestic Cairngorms National Park , and idyllic Isle of Skye , which has been connected to the mainland via a road bridge since 1995.

The easiest way to reach the Highlands is to fly into Inverness Airport from London or elsewhere in the U.K., or rent a car and drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh. However, the way to arrive in style is on the Caledonian Sleeper train from London Euston, a chugging time machine where you can fall asleep to the sounds of black cabs and bustle of the British capital and wake up among the red deer and magical glens of the Highlands. Regularly nominated as one of the world's best train journeys , the scenery gets truly spectacular after Fort William, as the route skirts a dramatic chain of lochs before descending into lush glens and crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct made famous by the Harry Potter films. For the ultimate Hogwarts experience, steam locomotives work this route during the summer months, so check in advance for these special departures.

The major cities have an abundance of hotels for every budget, headlined by Glasgow's Kimpton Blythswood Square , a boutique property in the former headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club, and The Dunstane Houses in Edinburgh, a pair of beautifully renovated 19th-century townhouses.

Scotland arguably does traditional country house hotels and rustic lodges better than anywhere else in the world, with Fife Arms in Braemar and Gleneagles in Perthshire being particular treats (the latter, nicknamed the "Glorious Playground" boasts three championship golf courses, its own dedicated train station, and the only restaurant in the country with two Michelin stars).

Scotland is, of course, peppered with castles, and many have been converted into hotels and B&Bs in recent years, with some of the better fortified accommodation options including Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire, Inverlochy Castle in Fort William, Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry, and Stonefield Castle Hotel on Loch Fyne.

Wherever you stay, you'll get a warm welcome — not to mention a hot bowl of Scottish porridge or a plate of bacon, eggs, and haggis to start the day in a spectacularly scenic country.

Scotland- Private Travel

Throughout its storybook villages and scintillating cities, across shimmering lakes or “lochs,” up rocky hilltops and over undulating grasslands, Scotland is the stuff of legend.

In Scotland, you can spend hours simply watching the sky change color.

Part of the United Kingdom for more than 300 years now, yet establishing its own legislature in 1999, Scotland enjoys more than 150 million visitors each year. Your luxury vacation in this bonnie land will no doubt begin and end in one of the two main centers. Surrounded by glacial hills, the capital of Edinburgh is Scotland’s cultural hub, known for its art festivals and for the well-preserved Royal Mile, a series of streets filled with shops, restaurants, cafés, and visitor attractions bookended by the Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Resplendent in its Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture, Glasgow is the largest city, also a cultural hub, and home to the National Theatre of Scotland, the Scottish Opera, and a thriving new music scene. Scotland is best known for producing some of the finest whisky in the world, with different regions creating delicate flavors inherent to their own tastes, traditions, and topography. A great starting point is a tour of Speyside on the Malt Whisky Trail, a legendary grouping of eight distilleries taking advantage of the clear waters of the River Spey. Motoring through the Highlands is a beautiful and memorable pursuit, something you can stretch out for weeks if you have a mind to. Endless hills, rocks, trees and lakes, wilderness, and wildlife can fill the days, with lovingly kept luxury estates with incredible dining rooms to fill your nights. From Loch Ness in the north on down through the lake district, you will segue into the wooded glens and rolling hills of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, a noted nature reserve. And while you will lose track of the lakes you’re driving around, you will remember the delectable seafood forever.

Escorted and Package Tours in Scotland

Escorted tours are structured group tours, with a group leader. The price usually includes everything from airfare to hotels, meals, tours, admission costs, and local transportation.

Abercrombie & Kent (tel. 800/554-7016; www.abercrombiekent.com ) offers extremely upscale escorted tours that are loaded with luxury. They're the best in the business.

Other contenders in the upscale package-tour business include Maupintour (tel. 800/255-4266; www.maupintour.com ) and Tauck World Discovery (tel. 800/810-8020;   www.tauck.co.uk ).

But not all escorted tours are so pricey. Older British folks make up a large portion of the clientele of one of the United Kingdom's largest tour operators, Wallace Arnold Worldchoice (tel. 0845/365-6747; www.waworldchoice.com ). Most of the company's tours last between 5 and 10 days, include lodgings (at solid but not particularly extravagant hotels) and most meals, and are reasonably priced.

U.S.-based Trafalgar Tours (tel. 866/544-4434; www.trafalgartours.com ) offers more affordable packages with lodgings in unpretentious but comfortable hotels. It's one of Europe's largest tour operators. Their 8-day "Best of Scotland 2010" tour costs $1,535, with some allencompassing introductory tours to Scotland; and Maupintour ( www.maupintour.com ; tel.  800-255-4266 in the U.S.), with tours of Edinburgh and Glasgow and day trips from each.

One of Trafalgar's leading competitors, known for roughly equivalent moderately priced tours through Britain, is Globus & Cosmos Tours (tel. 866/755-8581; www.globusandcosmos.com ).

You can sip your way through the landscapes with Whisky Tours Scotland ( www.whisky-tours-scotland.com ) or Distillery Destinations ( www.whisky-tours.com ; tel.  0141/429-0762 ). McKinlay Kidd ( www.mckinlaykidd.com ; tel.  0866/922-8538 ) leads a whisky explorer tour and also puts together self-guided trips to the Hebrides, Orkney, and other islands and mainland regions. McLean Scotland ( www.mcleanscotland.com ; tel.  01738/560-435 ) does small-scale whisky tours as well as driving circuits of castles and other scenic high points.

At Solway Tours ( www.solwaytours.co.uk ; tel.  07789/794-142 or 07809/239-696), the personable and well-informed Mark Turner and Lesley Watson lead personalized historic and ancestral trips of one to several days or a week, and will help clients trace their Scottish roots. Afternoon Tea Tour ( www.afternoonteatours.co.uk ; tel.  07873/211-856 ) accompanies a look around Edinburgh with tea at a country house hotel and does highly personalized, individual tours to the Isle of Skye, the Highlands, and other Scottish regions.

Despite the fact that escorted tours require big deposits and predetermine hotels, restaurants, and itineraries, many people derive security and peace of mind from the structure they offer. Escorted tours -- whether they're navigated by bus, motorcoach, train, or boat -- let travelers sit back and enjoy the trip without having to drive or worry about details. They take you to the maximum number of sights in the minimum amount of time with the least amount of hassle. They're particularly convenient for people with limited mobility, and they can be a great way to make new friends.

On the downside, you'll have little opportunity for serendipitous interactions with locals. The tours can be jam-packed with activities, leaving little room for individual sightseeing, whim, or adventure -- plus they often focus on the heavily touristed sites, so you miss out on many a lesser known gem.

I am so glad I visited today. I was full of trepidation and didn't have a clue in how to organise my trip to India. Jenna is a true professional with great insight and information about this vast country. She put my mind at ease and I'm actually looking forward to the adventure that awaits me.
Normally book holidays myself online but since I was planning a big safari, thought it would be best to get help. Trailfinders were fantastic, Michelle was so helpful and excited for us. We got our visas done by them too, cost a bit extra but it was done right. Highly recommend.
I was a bit overwhelmed with the online stuff but worked it out for myself. The travel insurance was prohibitous. Was put under a bit of pressure to buy it but did not and will shop around for a more reasonable cover.

TUI HOLIDAY STORE REVIEWS

Prior to getting assistance from Lisa, I was considering booking a holiday online. I’m so pleased that I got advice from Lisa to book a ski holiday, she was able to give detailed information on the resorts, best place to stay and restaurants and transfers to the resorts. Lisa helped me plan a great holiday and guided me with important issues that I hadn’t even thought about and helped me book a holiday that caters for a group with various interests and skiing ability. Our holiday is going to be far better from getting the inside knowledge of a travel adviser and I also feel much more confident that everyone is going to have a great holiday.
Thank you so much to Ashley and her amazing team for making the booking of my holiday so easy. Their knowledge and professionalism was absolutely first class. I will most certainly be returning when I am ready to book up again. Thanks team, keep up the good work :)
Gillian was very helpful in understanding our needs and put together a package acceptable to.our group.. She called back to allow us to accept the quote and we completed the booking..Well done Gillian and TUI..
