You’ll see lots of wildlife in Zambia during the middle and end of the Dry season (May to October). This will fit in nicely with a visit to Victoria Falls, which is at its best from June to August. A Wet season safari (November to April) is much more challenging, as most parks and camps shut down because of heavy rain. The exception is the Mfuwe section of South Luangwa National Park, which has a small circuit of all-weather roads.

May to October – Dry Season – Winter

  • Animals are easier to spot
  • There’s hardly any rain, and there are fewer mosquitoes
  • June through August is the best time to see Victoria Falls
  • October gets very hot, especially in South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi
  • Morning game drives in winter are chilly, so bring warm clothing

Wildlife Photos

best travel time to zambia

November to April – Wet Season – Summer

  • The landscape is green
  • January and February are good months to see Victoria Falls
  • You can see newborn animals
  • This is the best time for birding, with migrants present
  • The rain mostly falls as short showers in the late afternoon
  • It’s low season, which means lower rates
  • Most parks and camps close down – but South Luangwa remains open
  • Animals are harder to find because they no longer rely on rivers and waterholes to drink
  • From October to December, Victoria Falls might just be a trickle on the Zambian side

Best Time To Go by Major Park

For the best wildlife viewing in the main parks (South Luangwa, Kafue and Lower Zambezi), visit in the dry winter months (July to October). This coincides with the best opportunities for great photos of Victoria Falls – from June to August. Most camps close in the rainy season and washed-out roads make travel difficult. However, the landscape is beautiful and bird watching is superb at this time.

Best time to visit Zambia by season

The cool, dry season, from May to August, is considered to be the best travel time for Zambia when temperatures are around 73°F. At night it gets relatively fresh, falling to about 42°F. The rivers and waterholes are filled by the rainy season and attract numerous wild animals. Particularly great animal observations are possible in June and August. Many roads to remote regions are only passable during the cool dry season. During the hot dry season, especially from October, the temperatures and also the humidity increase noticeably.

In mid-November, the rainy season begins, which is also called the Emerald Season or Green Season. During these hot, humid months, the country shines in green. Many remote areas can no longer be visited and some camps close. Nevertheless, this season has its own charm – and is wonderfully suited for bird watching.

The climate in Zambia is determined by three seasons.

Cool drying time:  May – August

Hot dry season:  September – November

Rainy season:  December – April (South) / October – April (North)

January marks the peak rainy season in Zambia. Most camps remain closed but lower rates are available at those camps which remain open amidst the rain. Many roads are filled with mud owing to the rains which makes it difficult to drive around.

Recommendations

  • Victoria Falls receive high volumes of water. So, marvel at this thundering wonder, whose sprays and roars can be viewed and heard, respectively from miles away.
  • Great time for bird watching and walkers to explore the beautiful scenery all-round Victoria Falls . With fewer tourists around, you will have a great experience exploring the serenity of the place.

Not recommended

  • It is not advisable to travel to some national parks like South Luangwa National Park , Lusaka and Kafue National Park as the climate gets worse there in January.

Just like January, February receives heavy rainfall throughout Zambia. The majority of accommodations remain closed during this month. There are some exceptions though as some destinations and accommodations might open to a variety of outdoor activities.

  • Good time to go sightseeing at Victoria Falls. Few camps might give access to boating trips.
  • Depending on the national parks that are open for public access, you can choose to go for bird watching.
  • Climate is suitable for Livingstone Tours .
  • Good time for fly-in safaris to experience the emerald season of Zambia.

 Not recommended

  • The climatic conditions around South Luangwa and Lusaka are very bad. Hence, it is not recommended to travel to these areas.

Just after the rains, the Zambezi River flows at its full capacity, making it the Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls . The large volume of sprays from the falls is visible from miles away and sometimes obscures the view of the falls. Several camps do open for boating trips. Also, as there are fewer crowds around, Zambia Accommodations are available at reduced prices.

  • Visit Victoria Falls and behold its magnificence.
  • Trips around the town of Livingstone.
  • Helicopter or microlight flights over Victoria Falls to experience them at their fullest.

  • Good time for cultural tours or hiking.
  • The climate is not that favourable for exploring the South Luangwa National Park for safaris.

Rains continue through April, but they may dry up towards the end of the month. Road conditions may remain bad which is an important consideration to keep in mind when coming for Zambia Safaris .

  • Experience the traditional Kuomboka Festival with the Lozi people.
  • Good time to get around Victoria Falls on a helicopter ride.
  • You can go sightseeing at South Luangwa National Park and Kafue National Park.

Not Recommended

  • Not recommended for predator sightings.

The dry season starts in May and is considered one of the best times to go on Safaris to Zambia . Several lodges, camps and parks that were closed earlier due to bad weather conditions gradually opens up. The lush green landscapes all around Zambia Safari offer great photographic opportunities for our guests.

  • Embark on fishing trips now on as May flags the fishing season in Zambia.
  • Take up helicopter rides over Victoria Falls for the best experience.
  • Best time to go for game-viewing in Zambia National Parks .
  • The month of May is generally not recommended for walking safaris as the tracks are still laden with mud and it might be slippery just after the rains.

During June, lands are dry, rivers are full and the landscape is green and beautiful. Prevailing weather conditions are dry and cool making June one of the ideal times to head on Safaris to Zambia .

As the rain completely stops, the camps and lodges also start reopening. And, with fewer visitors around, the accommodations around the Zambian destinations offer good deals.

  • Best time to head on for walking safaris in the Luangwa valley.
  • Many major parks around Zambia offer guided walks too.
  • Camping out in the bush while hearing the hippos grunting and lions roaring.

July offers the best wildlife spotting opportunities as the vegetation is scarce now and it is easier to spot them congregating around remnant water sources. Though daytime temperatures rise gradually, still mornings and evenings are comparatively cooler. July is one of the busiest months as the number of visitors coming for Holidays In Zambia rises.

  • Visit South Luangwa for the best game-viewing activities.
  • Try river cruises and fishing activities at Lower Zambezi National Park.
  • Explore the remote wilderness of Kafue National Park .
  • White-water rafting starts on the River Zambezi.
  • It’s better to avoid water-based activities on the River Zambezi if the water levels are too high because of the prior heavy rains.

The peak safari season in Zambia extends into August. The cool mornings and warm days along with scarce vegetation, provide ideal conditions for wildlife encounters. Animals tend to assemble around water holes and can be viewed easily on safari drives.

August is also a good time to combine Victoria Falls Tours with safaris to any of the national parks in Zambia.

  • As the bush dries up due to dry weather conditions, it is easier to navigate around on foot. Hence, August is a perfect time to go on walking safaris all across the country.
  • Take safari drives in Kafue National Park and explore its remote landscapes.
  • As the water levels in River Zambezi start receding in August, white-water rafting and bungee-jumping activities are carried out in full swing.
  • Attend the Likumbi Lya Mize Ceremony to interact with the local people and get a glimpse of their cultural traditions.

As the temperature starts to raise in September, the cool and dry atmosphere in Zambia Safari is replaced by hot and drier conditions. Still, it’s a good time for safari expeditions as animals conglomerate around remaining waterholes and rivers in search of drinking water. Thus, making it easy to spot them when going on safari drives across the national parks.

  • An ideal time for bird watching. Common sightings include eagles and storks preying on fish.
  • Walking safaris in North Luangwa are quite popular around this time.
  • Visit the South Luangwa National Park to witness flocks of hundreds of carmine bee-eaters swarming the Luangwa River.

It gets extremely warm in the low-lying regions of Zambia. The temperature reaches mid 30°C. Crocodile nesting season begins during this month in South Luangwa National Park .

  • Wildlife safaris in Lower Zambezi National Park.
  • Tiger Fishing in Lake Kariba.
  • Early morning and evening game drives to beat the heat.
  • The Zambian side of Victoria Falls tends to dry up, so to see the main falls cross over to the Zimbabwe side.

The weather conditions in November are quite unpredictable. This is because you exactly don’t know when the rains will arrive. Sometimes, disruptive summer rains can affect wildlife viewing. Some lodges and camps might close down. Others offer lower rates, thus making it a good time to visit Zambia if you want to travel on a budget.

  • Get to witness the second-largest wildebeest migration in Liuwa Plain National Park.
  • Experience the world’s largest spectacle in Zambia’s Kasanka National Park, the Great Bat Migration.
  • Rafting and bird watching at nearby Chusa Falls are popular activities during this time.
  • Go hiking or horseback riding in Shiwa Ngandu Lake.

The rainy season in Zambia starts in December. The weather conditions are very warm and humid. As heavy rains and floods hit the place, most lodges and camps across national parks in Zambia shut down.

  • Great time for bird watching as migratory birds return during this time.
  • You can also spot baby antelopes and young zebras taking their first steps in the bush.
  • Victoria Falls Tours can be avoided during this time as the Zambia side of the falls dries up.

Kafue National Park is a dry-season destination which offers the best wildlife sightings during the peak months of July to October. During this time, the African bush dries out and vegetation is scarce. The animals gather around remaining water holes and are easy to view in the course of game drives.

The Busanga Plains contain permanent water resources where most of Kafue’s wildlife gathers during the peak dry months. A visit to the plains during Kafue National Park Tours is a very rewarding experience as you get to witness some of the best prey-predator interactions.

Climate Guide For Kafue National Park

The tourism centre of Zambia, Livingstone, is generally visited during the dry season for the best adventure and thrilling experience. The pleasant temperature and low rainfall between the dry months of June and October are conducive for Livingstone Tours . Besides, this period is also suitable for visiting nearby attractions like the Zambezi River and the devil's pool.

The dry season receives lower rainfall, meaning water levels are low in the River Zambezi and suitable for carrying out adventure-laden activities. Also, wildlife viewings are best during the dry season as animals gather together to quench their thirst and are spotted easily. These are some reasons that make the dry season the best time to visit Livingstone city.

Climate Guide For Livingstone

Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia can be visited from March through September and November. The temperature is warm and the city receives little to no rainfall during this time. Thus, making it the ideal time to visit Lusaka and thereafter, head on to your next safari destination.

October is hot with the highest average temperature around 33°C and can be avoided if you are not a sun-chaser. The lowest temperature in Lusaka is about 23°C, ideal conditions for spending one or two nights in the city.

Climate Guide For Lusaka

The Best Time To Visit Zambia ’s premiere safari destination, South Luangwa National Park , is through the peak of dry months running from June to October. The park is at its driest best, and the temperature is cool and warm with plentiful sunlight.

These months are excellent for wildlife sightings as they gather around permanent water resources in search of drinking water. So, any Zambia Safari Packages on foot or in a vehicle will be rewarding.

Apart from the dry season, if there is another time that can be considered the best time to visit South Luangwa, then it has to be the emerald season. The rains turn the landscapes lush and green. Droves of migratory and endemic birds visit the National Park and can be sighted easily, thus making South Luangwa a bird watcher’s haven.

Climate Guide For South Luangwa National Park

Lower Zambezi National Park follows similar wildlife viewing patterns as most other Zambia National Parks . Dry season months extending from June to October are the best time to visit the national park.

Thinner vegetation and drier lands during the dry months force the animals to gather around the river in search of clear waters. Thus, making wildlife spotting easy.

Another preferred time for Lower Zambezi National Park Safaris is its green or emerald season. The temperature is hot and humid and heavy rainfalls around this time may not sound attractive to many.

Still, if you want to escape from usually over-crowded parks and experience the lush-green landscapes at lower rates, visiting Lower Zambezi from November to March should be your next best choice.

Climate Guide For Lower Zambezi National Park

The North Luangwa National Park experiences the best wildlife viewing months from June to October. Animals come out of the bush and gather near the river banks in search of water. This makes it easy to sight the animals during safaris to North Luangwa.

Moreover, the infrastructure in North Luangwa is still not developed completely. This is why tour operators only conduct safaris in North Luangwa during the dry season. Also, due to its remote nature, the park is almost completely inaccessible during the wet season.

Climate Guide For North Luangwa National Park

Kasanka National Park is best visited during the dry season extending from May to October. This is an ideal time for safaris to the national park.

Wildlife viewing is at its best as animals concentrate around watering holes to quench their thirst. You can also spot predators hunting down on others during this time around. An experience every safari-enthusiast wishes to get a glimpse of.

This national park is also popular for being host to Earth’s largest bat migration. Visit the park at the beginning of the wet season to see around 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats descend upon the area. The event occurs during November-December and that is why these months are often considered the best time to visit Kasanka.

Liuwa National Park doesn’t follow the traditional wildlife patterns of most of the other parks in Africa. And, the park’s best time to visit is not the usual dry season but extends from late November or early December (wet season).

During this time, huge numbers of wildebeest migrate to the plains which is a major attraction for travellers. Plenty of newborns are spotted moving around the Park as the calving season is in full swing during the wet season. These months also provide excellent birding opportunities.

From January to the end of March, the plains become impassable and it is almost difficult to travel. Another preferred time to visit the National Park is during the months of May and June when wildlife congregates around water resources and can be viewed easily.

Below is a table that summarizes all the best times to visit different Zambia Destinations to get a hold of all its major attractions and partake in the offered activities.

Although Victoria Falls will never disappoint you no matter which time of the year you choose to visit. The only difference is the volume of water which varies over different months of the year.

During some months, the Victoria Falls are full and are viewed in all their glory, while in the rest the water levels in the River Zambezi recede and are suitable for adventure sports.

Let’s take you through different Victoria Falls seasons and explain how each season will influence your fall experience.

December to March-Rainy Season

  • The peak of the rainy season.
  • The weather is hot and humid.

  • White water rafting and bungee jumping is closed.
  • Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island are also both closed.

April to June- Low Rain Season

  • After the summer rains, the falls are set up for a spectacular display with the highest volumes of water.
  • Water activities are still closed owing to safety concerns.

July to August – Early Dry / Peak Season

  • July and August are peak seasons.
  • Water levels start going down and fewer sprays give excellent visibility of Victoria Falls.
  • The Livingstone Island and rafting facilities start functioning after the water levels drop to a safe level.
  • Game viewing is at its’ best in nearby national parks.

September to November – Late Dry / Low Water Season

  • Water levels at Victoria Falls reach their lowest.

A visit to Victoria Falls from the Zambia side will not be the same as you are not getting wet.

The success of Safaris To Zambia will depend on timing your journey in such a way that you get to explore the diverse wildlife of the place. If you are a first-time safari-goer, it is best advised to visit Zambia National Parks in the dry season for easy wildlife viewing.

Seasoned travellers can, however, choose to travel in the green season too. This season provides excellent opportunities to spot herbivores amidst scenic luscious green landscapes. You also get to witness animals giving birth to their young ones during this time.

Apart from that the green season in Zambia is also well-known for bird watching, the second-largest wildebeest migration and annual bat migration.

A detailed table regarding when and where to visit Zambia as per the wildlife you want to see is given below:

  • Kayaking Safaris - June to September to glide gently over River Zambezi
  • Walking Safaris - July to October provide ideal temperatures to walk through the parks.
  • Attending Festivals - Visit in April to attend the famous Kuomboka festivals. And, if you are visiting during the peak season, you can attend Zambia International Trade Fair (June/July) or Livingstone Cultural and Arts Festivals (August).

To summarize it all, some essential facts regarding the Best Time to Visit Zambia are emphasized below for your convenience.

  • High tourist season - May to October
  • Low season - January to June
  • Best weather - April to November
  • Less-favourable weather - December to March(humid &rainy)
  • Highest rainfall - Dec/January
  • Best time for game viewing -June to October
  • Best time for bird watching - Excellent year-round but particularly rewarding from December to April.
  • Best time for tiger fishing - Sep to mid-November

In summary, the Best Time To Visit Zambia will always depend on what you want to see and what you want to experience on your safari.

While the dry season turns the bush into a beautiful golden-red landscape just after the rains and is optimal for safari, the wet season is considered ideal for those who want to experience Zambia Safaris at affordable prices.

So, choose your best time as per your taste, preferences and convenience.

Our Travelers Say

Icon

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more. We visited the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the Victoria Falls Tour and a number of national parks in both countries. Rhino tracking was a real adventure! We had tremendous further game drives and saw very many animals - we did the Big Five. We had much more Victoria Falls Activities than planned and enjoyed very much.We strongly recommend Falcon Safaris to everyone planning a trip to Southern Africa and East Africa.

Wonderful trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana with excellent organization and very competent guides

Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.

Exceptional!

We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana. Our lodgings at River View Lodge were just as described- very comfortable and excellent food. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. If I had to do it again I would arrange a morning boat ride as well. We only did the sunset boat rides and they were the high point of our entire trip- we saw so many animals and our guide was very knowledgeable. Just a great experience. Our lodgings at Oddball's Enclave was rustic and we loved it. So great to disconnect from the world for a bit. Leo, our guide, was the best - got us out and about, saw fantastic wildlife and got back to camp safely each time. Doc manages the camp so well. This whole trip was planned and organized by Falcon Safaris and we could not have been happier.

Fabulous, well planned trip

Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure. I do realize its not within your controle but with limit alternatives and a group of 14 people it becomes an issue to find alternative accomodation if the booking was cancelled.

When is the Best Time to Visit Zambia?

Published on: July 25th, 2017

Last modified: July 27th, 2023

Zambia 's weather is best split in two: wet from December to April, and dry from May to November.

The best time to visit Zambia for game viewing and wildlife photography is May to October. March to May is ideal for experiencing Victoria Falls at their fullest and most spectacular.

Aim for July if you fancy trying some water sports on the Zambezi, or a dip at the top of the falls.

What is Zambia like in the rainy season?

Also known as the green season, the rainy months are December to April. While the vegetation is at its lushest during this time, it can hamper game viewing. Some of the animals also move away from the water sources they rely on in the drier months. It’s good to bear in mind that some lodges are affected by flooding and may close over this period. Be aware that higher humidity means more mosquitos.

The weather in November is often hot and dry with the odd patch of rain as the season starts to change. The north of the country is the wettest, and there are often thunderstorms in the afternoon through these summer months. The further south you travel, the less rain you will experience. The rainy weather means that the parks are generally quieter and some of them offer lower rates.

If you happen to be in Zambia at the end of the rainy season in April, you may get to experience the traditional Kuomboka Festival with the Lozi people. Held around the time when the Zambezi floods the plains, the festival marks the move of the Lozi king from his compound on the floodplains to higher ground. The sound of the royal Maoma drums echoes through the area the day before the festival.

Victoria Falls Zambia

Visit the Victoria Falls

One of the main reasons people choose Zambia as a holiday destination is to see Victoria Falls , so it stands to reason you’d want to visit at the best time of year. Aim for the end of the country’s rainy season, from March to May. That’s when the Zambezi River is at its fullest and Vic Falls are simply breath-taking. Whether you’re just there for the view and to bask in the spray, or you’re in the mood for something a little more adventurous like gorge swings or thrilling game viewing, the area makes for a memorable holiday. From June to November the water volume decreases, and the powerful, wide waterfall splits into smaller ones.

Go on safari

The best time for game viewing is during the drier months. The less dense vegetation also makes for fantastic photographic opportunities. If you’re visiting South Luangwa , aim for between June and October to make the most of open-topped game drives and walking safaris. At the end of the dry season, September and October, you’ll get the best game experiences provided you’re prepared for temperatures that reach above 40°C. Likewise, June to October is the best time to visit the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Zambia_Luangwa_elephants_sunset

What is Zambia like in the dry season?

Running from May to October, the dry season boasts pleasantly mild daytime temperatures, although September and October get a lot hotter. The dry season is the best time for game viewing, but keep in mind that there may be little to no water coming over the falls on the Zambian side. You might need to cross over to Zimbabwe. The upside to lower water levels is the opportunity to go white-water rafting, or pluck up the courage to wallow in Devil’s Pool at the edge of the falls from around July.

The best time to visit Zambia

We know the importance of weather when it comes to a safari, be it game driving in the South Luangwa , chilling out on the river in the Lower Zambezi , or streaking above Vic Falls in a chopper. Zambia has very distinct weather patterns that make defining safari seasons in the different parks quite easy. But, as ever, global warming seems determined to wreak havoc with the climate so there is an element of unpredictability. Read on for our general guide to the best time to visit Zambia, weather patterns and all (and if you’re still struggling to find the time to suit you, take a look at our comprehensive when to go guide for a month-by-month deep dive).

Best time to visit Zambia

December to April: The green season

It might seem strange to start at the end of the year, but December actually marks the true beginning of Zambia’s green season that carries on through to March and April. It may be a little wetter than normal but this is one of the best times to visit Zambia. The parks are luscious and green, the light is phenomenal and there’s not a bit of dust in sight – a photographer’s dream. Many of the remote bush camps in places like the South Luangwa , Luambe and the North Luangwa will be closed but there are still a good number of lodges open, and at very competitive prices. For boating in the South Luangwa , time your visit for February or March; several of the bush camps re-open ( Time and Tide Kakuli Bush Camp  and Nsefu bush camps spring to mind) and are accessible only by water, making for a wonderful experience. Take a look at this green season itinerary if that sounds like your cup of tea. Down at Victoria Falls , the waterfall is in full flow and possibly at its most spectacular, but the high levels of water aren’t so good for white-water rafting.

April & May: the shoulder season

April and May (and November) are the ‘shoulder season’ months in Zambia . The rains are pretty much over – although anything could happen and it would be wise to prepare for a shower here and there – and the game viewing heats up as the grass recedes. It truly is a lovely time to travel and if you’re looking to save a few pennies, this is the best time of year to seek out excellent deals. Remember that lots of the remote bush camps in the South Luangwa , Lower Zambezi and Kafue are closed and walking isn’t at its best, but you’ll still have a good selection of accommodation to choose from. Victoria Falls are still a spectacular sight at this time of year with the water level of the Zambezi peaking, showcasing the falls in all her glory.

best travel time to zambia

June to October: The peak season

The peak safari season, and traditionally the best time to visit Zambia , is from June to October. It’s actually winter, but perhaps not the same winter we northern hemisphere dwellers are used to! We’re talking clear blue skies, sunshine (and lots of it) and rarely a drop of rain. The coldest months are June and July, and mornings and evenings can be chilly but nothing a good jacket can’t solve. As the season progresses, it steadily heats up and becomes drier and October is hot, hot, hot – think an average of 36 degrees. But, if you can stand the heat, the game viewing is phenomenal across the main parks with animals congregating at the main water sources and predators taking full advantage of the mobile buffet.

If you choose to travel now, you’ll have the pick of the camps in the South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi , and by mid-June, even the most far-flung bush camps will be open. If you’ve got your eye on the Kafue , get there earlier rather than later for the chance to boat around the Busanga Plains . For the Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa, walking safaris get better toward the end of June as the tall grass recedes.

At Livingstone and Victoria Falls , the water level actually goes down as the season progresses. From May to July/August, the water is pumping, throwing spray hundreds of metres into the air, just like the postcards. After August, the water level recedes making it the best time to visit for the Devil’s Pool and ‘low water’ white-water rafting, undoubtedly the most exhilarating! Contrary to some news reports, the Falls never dry up and even if you’re visiting towards the end of the season, they are still a sight to behold.

best travel time to zambia

November: the Shoulder Season

November is rather like April and May. The chance of rain is quite high and the first storms of the season are dramatic and incredible to witness. The bush camps start to close and accommodation choices are fewer in many areas, but what that does mean is that you’ll have the parks (and the wildlife sightings) pretty much all to yourself. If you choose to travel now, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

And for the exception that proves the rule: Liuwa Plain . Unlike the rest of the country, the best time to visit Liuwa is in late November to December for the astonishing wildebeest migration (the second largest on the continent), or April, May and early June when the rains are over. Flights to Kalabo are seasonal, and there’s very limited accommodation in the park (the only permanent lodge at the time of writing is King Lewanika ), both of which dictate when you can and can’t travel, but if it fits into your plans – go, go go!

Best Time To Visit Zambia

Zambia safari holidays, month by month guide of when to go.

Zambia’s weather has two distinct seasons, a hot and rainy summer, usually starting in mid-November and lasting until the end of March. From April through to September is remains dry and much cooler, before temperatures start to rise in October and there is a chance of rain, especially in the afternoons and early evenings.

When to visit very much depends on what you are looking to do as the best time varies for safari, birding and visiting Victoria Falls.

Below is a short summary of the best times to visit or scroll to the bottom for a full month by month guide.

Safaris in Zambia are generally seasonal, with most lodges opening between April and May as the temperatures cool and rainfall drops, remaining open through the dry winter months until the middle of November when the rains arrive and they close for the summer.

The dry period between April to September is especially good for safaris, and if you can brave the heat of October, you will be rewarded with fantastic game viewing as animals cluster around limited water sources and the short grasses make them easy to spot.

Best for safari: June to September - brilliant game viewing, dry and cooler.

Best for birders: November to May (green season)

Bat Migration: November

Peak season: July and August

Where you can go and what you can do in Zambia is very much dictated by the rains, as some parks and lodges are rendered completely inaccessible in rainy weather (mid-Nov - March).

Certain parks, namely the North Luangwa and Luambe National Parks don’t even open during the rainy season owing to the challenges of access and getting around once you are there, and the style of accommodation in Zambia, with many camps being rustic “bushcamps” or tented camps makes operating during the rainy season more challenging.

That said, a number of lodges in parks such as the South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue remain open throughout the year, taking advantage of their locations next to the Luangwa, Zambezi and Kafue rivers to offer both access to the lodges via water taxi and game viewing options by boat, as well as fishing. Visiting during this time will ensure you avoid the crowds, offers brilliant value with fantastic birding and walking opportunities.

Visitors with specific interests in birding will delight in being able to visit the more northerly Kasanka National Park and Bangwelu Wetlands throughout the year.

Low season: November to April (many camps close during this time).

  • Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is accessible throughout the year with the weather following a similar pattern to the rest of the country, but with water levels varying greatly from month to month. Broadly speaking water levels start to rise in December, peaking in March or April when the plume of spray from The Falls can be seen from miles away as you fly in. From May the water levels drop rapidly until there is no water at all flowing over the Zambian side come September or October. Local rains arrive in the latter part of October and continue into November which does start to fill the river

Peak water level: March or April (depending on the rains) - this is when they are at their most impressive!

Best for activities: July and August - lower water levels mean you can do white water rafting and swim in Devil's Pool. This is the peak time to visit the falls.

Best avoided: October - November - the water levels can dry up completely on the Zambia side at this time of year.

The peak of Zambia’s summer rainy season, January is often ignored as a time to go on safari in Zambia, but those who do venture here, especially to the South Luangwa National Park are rewarded with some spectacular experiences. The handful of camps that open at this time focus on river journeys, with guests able to explore the swollen Luangwa River in flat-bottomed boats with their guides. Huge herds of buffalo roam the floodplains, hippo frolic in the shallows and crocodile laze high on the banks of this immense river. It is an incredible time of year for birding and the lush green bush is a spectacular backdrop for photographs. The Victoria Falls are starting to fill up thanks to localised rains as well as those thousands of miles upstream.

Luangwa River Camp Water Taxi

The rains are starting to subside across the country, but access means most camps remain closed, although the camps easily accessed by river in the South Luangwa National Park offer amazing game viewing and breathtaking landscapes to enjoy. It is also a great month for fishing, on a catch and release basis, in the Lower Zambezi National Park, so keen anglers will want to consider an extended stay in this beautiful part of the country. More adventurous travellers can cast their eyes west to the mighty Kafue National Park which offers excellent game viewing in the region around the Kafue River. Water levels at Victoria Falls are starting to rise towards their peak.

Victoria Falls

March sees water levels at Victoria Falls reach their zenith, with 500 million litres of water crashing over the precipice every minute, making it a truly incredible spectacle to witness. Of course, there is plenty more to enjoy in the area, including canoeing, fishing trips, sundowner boat cruises, helicopter and microlight flights as well as game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Water levels on the floodplains of the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks are starting to drop with the activity of opening camps for the new season starting in earnest. Out in the west of the country, it is a great time for canoe safaris in the Liuwa Plain National Park as the water levels continue to drop.

King Lewanika Lozi Tribe

As the weather starts to cool across Zambia, safari conditions improve with more and more camps opening their doors for the season, notably in the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks. Visitors to Liuwa Plain may have the chance to witness the fabled Kuomboka Ceremony as the local Lozi people move their king from his summer to winter home in a series of elegant boats. Victoria Falls continues to run at its peak, with the plume of spray that is thrown up seen from miles around and remains an especially dramatic sight to witness from above. Keen birders can also take advantage of the subsiding water levels by getting off the beaten track in the Kasanka National Park and Bangwelu Wetlands.

The Mighty Zambezi River

The start of May really sees Zambia’s safari season kick into gear as the majority of the camps in the Lower Zambezi start to welcome doors and all but the most remote camps in South Luangwa do the same. Likewise, the more eastern camps in Kafue open with access to superb game viewing around the Kafue River and the cooling temperatures mean it is a great time to visit Liuwa Plains. There is a noticeable drop off in the water levels at Victoria Falls, but it is still a superb time to visit either before or after a safari, with the cooler temperatures making it ideal for longer days out on the river, including fishing and canoeing trips.

Lion In The South Luangwa

Days start to become noticeably cooler and rainfall drops to zero which means it is a superb time of year to be on safari, even before peak season kicks in next month. Predator sightings become more common as the cooling temperatures in the South Luangwa mean they spend more time out in the open whilst the dropping levels of the Luangwa River mean pods of hippos in the pools become much larger. Visitors to the Kafue National Park will delight in the fact that the more northerly Busanga Plains have now drained of summer rainfall sufficiently to allow camps operating in this wildlife wonderful to open up to gusts bringing in a whole new range of experiences.

Image: Lion in South Luangwa

Zambia Hero Image

This is when the safari season really kicks in as the temperatures drop to their winter lows and rainfall remains non-existent, meaning all animals stay out in the open much longer and the lack of water means wildlife congregates around the river areas. This is the last month until October when the Liuwa Plain National Park remains open as the wildlife moves further north away from the camp. Kafue remains a superb spot for wildlife viewing and the camps can still offer boat safaris on the Kafue River. The North Luangwa National Park becomes a viable option in July, so great for those really looking to escape the crowds.

Devils Pool

Water levels at Victoria Falls really drop, meaning Livingstone, that delightful picnic spot on the edge of The Falls, and the Devil’s Pool are fully open offering an increased range of unique experiences that visitors to the area enjoy. The game viewing remains outstanding in the South Luangwa, with the dry underfoot conditions making it perfect for walks from the more remote bush camps in the north and east of the park. It is also a superb time to head up to the North Luangwa, especially for visiting the rhino sanctuary found there. The Lower Zambezi is a delight at this time of year with a huge range of activities on offer for visitors to enjoy.

Luangwa Bush Camping Walking Safari

Visitors to the Kafue National Park can enjoy hot air balloon flights from selected camps in the Busanga Plains region in September – a truly unique experience and one certainly not to be missed in the area. The Victoria Falls remain almost dry – certainly not a reason to avoid visiting in September, but one to bear in mind as it does change the activities on offer. It remains a great time to be in the more traditional areas of the Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa, with the sleepout safaris offered from a number of South Luangwa camps especially popular on these cool, dry nights.

Image: Luangwa Bush Camping Walking Safari

A definite change of seasons is in the area as October arrives, with days and nights becoming noticeably warmer and the threat of heavy rain hanging in the air some days. Despite the sometimes oppressive heat, especially in the Zambezi Valley, it is regarded by guides as the very best time for game viewing, especially for predators who revel in the easy hunting conditions. The more remote bush camps in the core parks, as well as those in remote areas such as North Luangwa and Kafue are starting to wind down their operations with a viewing to closing for the summer. Water levels remain low at Victoria Falls so a huge range of activities are still on offer.

Image: Lion in Luangwa

Wild Western Zambia Hero

Summer, with its associated hot days and heavy rainfall, is very much upon Zambia come November, with many camps closing by the middle of the month, although more accessible camps in South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue usually remain open until the middle of the month and beyond. Ardent safari-goers can still enjoy Zambia as the Liuwa Plain National Park becomes a viable option once again as the summer rains attract huge herds of wildebeest down on to the plains. Victoria Falls remains an excellent destination, with water levels just starting to creep up but a full range of activities remains on offer. Visitors to the Kasanka National Park will also be able to witness up to 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats who migrate to the park each year.

Image: Wildebeest in Liuwa Plain National Park

Victoria Falls Helicopter Flights

As summer reaches its peak the options for safaris in Zambia do become somewhat limited, but it remains as popular a time as ever to visit the iconic Victoria Falls. The South Luangwa has a number of camps, mainly those close to the river or in better-draining areas that stay open and guests keen on fishing can spend time in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Eastern Kafue remains a possibility for those who don’t mind the heat and visitors to Liuwa Plain can enjoy the excellent predator sightings that stem from the herds of wildebeest giving birth to their young. Of course, Christmas is celebrated with a great deal of enthusiasm in those camps that remain open.

Zambia travel tips: What you should know before you visit Zambia

We are proud members of the U.S. Peace Corps community and love to partner with our fellow Peace Corps Volunteers, who often have some of the best insights into the culture and authentic travel experiences available in their host country. We asked Lianne Bronzo, a recent Volunteer in Zambia, to share her expertise on travel in Zambia.

Africa is a massive continent hosting a great deal of diversity in terms of people, cultures, and landscapes. Then within each country is even more diversity and uniqueness. Zambia is no exception.

What is it like to travel in Zambia?

Victoria Falls - Zambia travel tips

While the most famous landmark is Mosi-o-tunya (the smoke that thunders), most commonly referred to as Victoria Falls , there’s a plethora of pure beauty hidden in pockets spanning the country.

Zambia is about the size of Texas, but traveling between destinations can take much longer due to the road networks and conditions, but that means less construction and more natural landscapes. So even with the logistical challenges, those that choose to venture here will be rewarded with unique scenery and exciting wildlife among little to no tourist crowds.

Although there aren’t any beaches in the landlocked country, Zambia is drowning with rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and even a few natural hot springs.

Perhaps the best part about living in Zambia for the past two years has been getting to know some of the warmest people I’ve truly ever met. People are quick to smile and have taught me so much in terms of hard work, patience, and resilience. I must admit that Zambia is the most difficult place I’ve ever traveled due to the vast distances alone, but it is grossly underrated as a travel destination.

Zambia’s Highlights

Wildlife: Zambia is home to the all of the Big Five, in addition to an abundance of other majestic animals such as wild dogs. Some of the best places for wildlife viewing are South and North Luangwa National Parks , Lower Zambezi National Park , Kasanka National Park (specifically to experience the largest mammal migration in the world!), and Kafue National Park . One may find the safari costs and crowds much smaller than neighboring Tanzania.

elephant, Zambia safari wildlife

Water: Lake Tanganikya, Lake Bangweulu, and Lake Kariba are some of the large bodies of water suitable for swimming, fishing, boat rides, or just lazing at the beach. The Zambezi River is also a popular spot for water activities.

If you’re itching to chase more than one waterfall, Northern Zambia has got plenty. Kundalila, Chishimba, Kalambo, Kabweluma, and Lumangwe are a few noteworthy waterfalls , but there are plenty more in the watery north. Ngonye Falls is another impressive site with falls spanning 1km in Western Province. Getting to these waterfalls can be tricky as there is little public transport, so hitchhiking, hiring a private taxi, bicycling, or self-driving are the only options. You will be rewarded for these efforts by likely being the only people there to swim in the delightful falls! Most of these places have basic camp sites as well.

Chishimba Falls, places to go in Zambia

Culture: 73 languages are spoken in Zambia and they all come with their own cultures and traditions. Some tribes have annual festivals such as the Bemba festival (Ukusefya pa Ngwena) and Lozi Kuomboka ceremony. Check out the Zambia Tourism website for details.

Where to Stay in Zambia

These are some of the best places to stay, recommended by Peace Corps Volunteers, around Zambia:

Where to stay in South Luangwa National Park: Marula Lodge – Affordable accommodations with a friendly staff and discounts for Peace Corps Volunteers!

Where to stay in Lusaka, Zambia: Lusaka Backpackers and Natwanga Backpakers are the most popular places for Peace Corps volunteers.

Where to stay in Livingstone, Zambia: Many of the backpacker places are more or less the same. Cafe Zambezi, Fawlty Towers, Jollyboys Backpackers, and Livingstone Backpackers are the most popular spots.

I recommend Fawlty Towers in Livingstone because they have a nice garden area and pool in the back and offer a free shuttle bus to Victoria Falls.

Where to stay in North Zambia: Lake Chila Lodge is a popular spot for the Mbala volunteers up North. It’s a good stopping point when visiting Lake Tanganikya and Kalombo Falls.

Samfya Marines Beach Lodge is popular amongst volunteers, but may be a bit on the expensive side. It has as private beach.

If you must stop in Nakonde , I recommend Muchinga Exquisite Lodge for a safe and cheap place. I don’t recommend Nakonde at all, but some people stop over en route to Tanzania if traveling by land and not the train.

Practical Zambia Travel Information

Zambezi River Dry season in Zambia

When to visit Zambia

May – July: Cool dry season. You won’t see a drop of rain, but it can get quite chilly at night in Lusaka. August – October: Hot dry season. Fields burn to prepare for planting season to add more to the heat. October is especially brutal, though the dry season is a good time for wildlife viewing. Victoria Falls may not be as powerful toward the end of the dry season. November: First half is dry and then the rains trickle in toward the end of the month, depending on the region (the north is wetter than the south). This is the best time to view the bat migration at Kasanka National Park. December – April: Rainy season. Vibrant green landscapes and mangoes litter the ground, though wildlife is more difficult to spot. Some unpaved roads become impassable during heavy rains.

Costs in Zambia

Like most destinations, budgets can vary wildly. Barebone backpackers can survive on as little as $30 USD per day but the sky is the limit for those seeking luxurious experiences. Most people will find a suitable budget to meet their comfort levels.

Average costs as of March 2020: A bottle of local beer: K10 ($0.66 USD) A filling Zambian meal of nshima (thick maize porridge), fish, and vegetables: K25-50 ($1.60 – $3.20 USD) A western meal: K60-150 ($4 USD – $10 USD) A bed in a dorm room: From K100 ($6.60 USD) A double bed in a very basic lodge: From K150 ($9.95 USD) A comfortable private room in a nicer lodge: From K300 ($19.90 USD) A bus from Livingstone to Lusaka: From K200 ($13.27 USD) but constantly changing due to gas prices

Communication: Cell phones in Zambia

If you have an unlocked phone, it’s easy to get a SIM card for less than a dollar, though you will need to show your passport. From there, you can buy Talk Time to add money for purchasing minutes and data at affordable prices. 4G is available in cities, but the network is spotty otherwise. Airtel and MTN are the two main providers. WiFi isn’t very common.

Getting Around Zambia

Transport will be a large chunk of your budget as well as time spent in the country. But remember that it’s all part of the journey and worth it if you have the time!

Bus: Large “luxury” buses shift people between all major cities with only a few stops, so moderate your fluids intake on long rides! They generally leave on time and it is advisable to purchase tickets at the station the day before. By law, buses are not allowed to operate at night for safety reasons. Gospel music is often played loudly on the bus, so bring some headphones or ear plugs if you are sensitive to loud music.

traveling by bus in Zambia

Mini-bus: They only leave when full and make frequent stops along the journey, so this option can be longer and less comfortable than the bus even though the prices are comparable.

Train: There are slow passenger trains from Livingstone to the Copperbelt as well as the TAZARA from Kapiri-mposhi all the way to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The trains are notorious for being late, but it is an affordable and safe option for those who have the time and genuinely enjoy train travel.

Zambia train travel - Tazara

Air: Small planes fly between Lusaka and tourist spots like Livingstone and Mfuwe. It is also possible to charter flights if you’ve got the cash but not the time.

Taxi: Private taxis can be expensive, but cost-effective if split between a group. I recommend using the Ulendo app, which is similar to Uber, when moving within Lusaka.

Self-drive: For freedom and flexibility, rent a car to drive yourself. Some tarmac roads can be laden with potholes and are quite narrow, so it can be intimidating to share the road with semi-trucks. It is not advisable to drive at night. A 4WD is recommended if you plan to veer off the tarmac. Don’t always trust Google maps in terms of travel times – it often will be slower. And remember to drive on the left!

Hitchhiking: I don’t officially recommend hitchhiking, but if you are comfortable doing it and have prior experience, you’ll find it relatively easy and safe hitching in Zambia. Catching lifts is a common form of transportation among locals, especially in areas that lack sufficient public transport. It is standard to pay a fee to the driver, but it is often less than what the bus would cost and significantly more comfortable. Semi-truck drivers are the most likely to give lifts but private vehicles do as well. I’ve met some interesting people while hitchhiking around Zambia. As always, use your best judgment and exercise caution.

Zambia’s Languages

English is one of the official languages and should fare a traveler well in most towns and tourist places in Zambia. However, there are 73 local languages and cultures throughout the country. People generally appreciate it when a foreigner tries to speak the local language, but it can also be insulting to come at somebody using a language that they don’t speak.

Bemba language lesson in Zambia

Here’s a general breakdown of the most popular languages in the regions that should be safe to use, but again, there is so much variation even within these provinces.

Lusaka: English, Nyanja. Honestly a little of everything! Southern Province: Tonga Western Province: Lozi Eastern Province: Nyanja Central, Luapula, Muchinga, Northern, and Copperbelt Provinces: Bemba Northwestern Province: Kaonde

Cultural things to know and travel etiquette in Zambia

Cultures vary greatly between tribes, but here are a few general tips that are useful for visitors to know:

– Traditionally, greetings are of utmost importance. When you pass someone in the rural area, acknowledge each other’s presence with a greeting. This isn’t practiced so much in towns, but it’s still important to say hello and how are you before getting right down to business.

– Both men and women should wear long skirts or pants as thighs are sexualized body parts.

– Zambia is a Christian nation, so transport can be trickier on Sundays and some businesses may be closed.

– Eat and shake hands with your right hand only.

– Tipping is not expected but always appreciated.

– If somebody calls you fat, it is a compliment, so try with all of your soul not to feel bad about it. I am a small Asian girl and got called fat on several occasions, though by people I know and not just strangers.

– Be mindful about taking photos of people. First, ask yourself what the purpose of the photo is, if you would take such a photo of a random person in your home country, and what will be done with that photo. Ensure you ask for consent.

Is Zambia safe for travelers?

Zambia is generally peaceful and a very safe place to be. Like anywhere, always exercise caution, especially in towns at nighttime. Try to avoid walking alone at night. Take trusted taxi drivers. Don’t flash around your valuables. You know, basic safety stuff you’d do at home!

It is pretty safe for a woman to travel solo in Zambia, but cat calling and harassment are not uncommon in busy areas. I sometimes feel uncomfortable being squished amongst men in public transport, so opt to sit in the front near the driver if possible. Befriending a woman nearby not only helps alleviate the situation if someone is bothering you, but Zambian women are generally strong and cool to get to know!

Homosexuality is illegal in Zambia unfortunately. LGBT travelers may find it difficult to have to hide their identity. Since I cannot speak to the experiences of LGBT individuals, I asked a friend what his advice would be for queer travelers in Zambia. He advised to avoid public displays of affection (this goes for hetero couples as well). If you want to be extra cautious, disable dating apps. He also mentioned that nose rings may be a signal for homosexuality, so taking it out may be a good idea, particularly if you are male-identifying.

Staying Healthy

I am not a doctor trained to give health advice, but it is a good idea to do your research and perhaps see a travel doctor before coming to the region. Some concerns travelers may encounter are malaria, tuberculosis, Bilharzia, giardia, and traveler’s diarrhea.

Some medications can be found locally and are cheaper here than your home country. Prevention is key! Opt to stay at places that have bed nets, drink clean water, and keep a small medical kit with a thermometer and malaria test kit. Oral rehydration solution packets can also be handy.

Zambian market, things to do in Zambia

General Zambia Travel Tips

– Always travel with toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and small change. Sometimes it can be difficult to break 100 kwacha bills.

– Look out for citenge material or traditional fabric. You can get clothes and accessories tailored affordably. Makes for a great souvenir or gift!

– When at produce markets, it is standard to ask for a “top up” if you buy a lot of things. Just say “mbasela?” and the vendor may laugh and throw in an extra banana.

– You must pay for plastic bags at many supermarkets, so that’s another incentive to carry around a reusable bag!

– Download the iOverlander app for information about landmarks and accommodation. It’s helpful even if you are not driving in the region.

– Join the Mzungu group chats   to connect with fellow travelers in the region.

– If you haven’t already, educate yourself about the white savior complex and poverty porn and keep these in mind if you are seeking to volunteer or go on “village tours” in the region.

When’s the Best Time of Year to Visit Zambia?

Scuba dive or snorkel at Lake Tanganyika in Northern Zambia.

Freelance Writer

Zambia is a country for any type of traveler–from those wanting to visit Victoria Falls, go on safari in the national parks dotted around the country or to attend any of the country’s traditional ceremonies. With so much to do, figuring out the right time to travel to the southern African region can be daunting. Here’s our guide to when to go, organized month by month, with things to do and other important info.

The start of the year in Zambia is filled with heavy rain, which makes travel to other parts of the country difficult, but not impossible, due to impassible roads. Some camps in Lower Zambezi, Kafue, South Luangwa and other national parks stay open during this period—known as the emerald season—and offer discounts. Travelers wishing to save money on a safari trip should visit those national parks.

Average temperature (Lusaka): 72°F (22°C)

Average rainfall days (Lusaka): 17

February is characterized by rain and thunderstorms. Take a break from Lusaka and head to Katete in the Eastern Province for the N’cwala traditional festival celebrated by the Ngoni people.

Average temperature: 72°F (22°C)

Average rainfall days: 12

Due to International Women’s Day and Zambia’s Youth Day public holidays on March 8 and 12 respectively, many lodges in Livingstone and Siavonga, which are both located in the Southern Province, are booked months in advance by families seeking a short getaway from Lusaka. So prior plans should be made if looking to visit those places.

Average rainfall days: 9

April marks the end of the rainy season and the re-opening of many camps and lodges in national parks that were closed, such as Kafue National Park, Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa and others. The Kuomboka traditional ceremony of the Lozi people also takes place in April, although the exact date changes depending on when the Zambezi river floods the Western Province’s plains.

Average temperature: 68°F (20°C)

Average rainfall days: 2

Labor Day is on May 1, which is a public holiday. Runners should sign up for The Lafarge marathon, the longest running marathon in Lusaka that takes place on the first Saturday of the month. The Alliance Motor Rally is held on the first Friday and Saturday of May. Africa Freedom Day, which is on May 25, is also a public holiday. The Livingstone International Cultural Arts Festival (LICAF), an annual three-day festival showcasing the tourist capital is held in May.

Average temperature: 64°F (18°C)

Average rainfall: 0

Temperatures drop further in June and it is typically the coldest month of the year, so visitors should bring warm clothing. Mountain biking enthusiasts can sign up for The Mountain Bike Challenge , a grueling 155–mile race in Livingstone, Southern Province. Escape the winter by spending a weekend in Siavonga , a popular town by Lake Kariba in Southern Zambia.

Average temperature: 61°F (16°C)

Average rainfall days: 0

The first Monday and Tuesday of July are Heroes, and Unity day respectively, which are both observed as public holidays. Tourists can head to the Victoria Falls and swim in the Devils Pool, an infinity pool at the edge of the falls. Escape the cold weather and head to Muchinga Province to soak in the Kapishya hot springs.

Average temperature: 59°F (15°C)

The month of August hosts many traditional ceremonies, such as the Likumbi Lya Mize of the Kaonde tribe in the North-Western Province—which celebrates male initiates; Kulamba of the Chewa people in the Eastern Province; Ukusefya Pa Ng’wena of the Bemba tribe in Northern Province, which celebrates harvest, and more.

August also marks the start of the hot air ballooning season in the Busanga plains of Kafue National Park. The Agricultural and Commercial Show trade fair is held during the first weekend of the month. The first Monday of the month is Farmers Day and a public holiday. Early August is usually windy and dusty, but by the end of the month the warmer temperatures mark the beginning of summer.

August also marks the start of the river surf season at Victoria Falls, which lasts until January.

September is the start of the hot season, and a great time to cool off at Samfya beach—a white sandy beach on Lake Bangweulu in Northern Zambia—or to hike and camp at the Mutinondo Wilderness. Continue discovering the northern circuit by visiting Lake Tanganyika and scuba dive, take a walking safari in the Nsumbu National Park, or hike up the Kalambo waterfalls. Visitors should carry sunscreen and swimsuits.

Lake Tanganyika is the largest freshwater lake in the world. Activities on the lake include snorkeling, scuba diving and more

Oktoberfest takes place in the town of Chisamba, Central Province in the second week of October. Zambians celebrate independence on October 24, which is a public holiday, so banks, bureaus and other businesses only remain open until midday. The second Sunday of October is a national prayer and fasting day, and another public holiday. Various traditional ceremonies take place in October, such as the Chakwela Makumbi of the Soli people in Chongwe, Lusaka, the Shimunenga of the Ila people in the Southern Province and more.

Zambia Fashion Week is also held in October, usually the second week. The White Water Festival is held at the Waterfront in Livingstone in late October.

Average temperature: 75°F (24°C)

November is the start of the rainy season in Zambia, which means national parks experience fewer visitors due to the rain making some roads impassible and the thick vegetation making it harder to spot animals while on safari. However, it is still a great month to visit Kasanka National Park in Central Province for the annual bat migration phenomenon, which sees around five million bats take residence in their temporal home while they feed on the wild fruits of the forest.

Average rainfall days: 7

In December the rains continue, but that should not deter safari-lovers from heading to Liuwa National Park in the Western Province to experience the wildebeest migration and spot lions, wild dogs and other predators. Christmas Day (December 25) is a public holiday.

Average rainfall days: 15

When not to go to Zambia

Although Zambia can be explored at any time of the year, June and July offer the least activities and are the coldest months, so visiting any other time would be ideal.

Crowned cranes in South Luangwa National Park

When is the best time to visit Zambia?

  • South Luangwa National Park
  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit Zambia is during the dry season between June and November. The skies are cobalt blue, the days are hot, and the nights are cool. Temperatures can sit anywhere from 23°C to 36°C across the country. Wildlife-spotting opportunities are plentiful during this time too.

Victoria Falls makes a great option to combine with a safari, but can be visited on its own when the camps are closed briefly in the wet season between January and February. This is when the ‘smoke that thunders’ lives up to its name. This name was coined by the Kalolo-Lozi people, who could see the enormous clouds of mist and spray from a distance.

Rain does fall outside of the wettest months, but this is compensated for by minimal crowds and top-quality birdwatching, plus temperatures remain warm.

The Victoria Falls, Zambia

Visiting Zambia in January

January is a good time to see Victoria Falls, but is very wet elsewhere and most camps are closed.

Events & Festivals

  • Green Season: this is a great time for birdwatchers and walkers, offering beautiful scenery, flocks of migratory birds and hardly any people, as well as amazing value for money. Read more about Zambia's Green Season.

White-fronted bee eaters, Lower Zambezi National Park

Visiting Zambia in February

It remains wet throughout February, so it's a good time to see Victoria Falls, but only a few camps stay open for boating and walking. It's also a good time for birdwatching.

Brown hooded kingfisher, Kafue National Park

Visiting Zambia in March

Victoria Falls is at its fullest, sending huge amounts of spray into the air and often obscuring the view of the falls themselves. Some camps are open for boating, and birdwatching is excellent. This time of year offers fantastic value for money and camps are really quiet so there are no crowds.

Hippos, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Visiting Zambia in April

The weather starts to dry up a bit, but rain remains a significant feature of April.

Walking Safari in North Luangwa

Visiting Zambia in May

A few more camps open up as the rain stops. However, this isn't the best time to embark on a safari as the ground is still sodden, which makes access difficult.

Walking safari from Musekese Bush Camp,Kafue National Park

Visiting Zambia in June

The ground starts to dry out after the rains, making June a lovely time to visit. The rivers are still full and the bush is colourful. The camps have opened and are offering excellent deals, while there are few other visitors to compete for space with.

Leopard preparing for an evening hunt in South Luangwa

Visiting Zambia in July

Once July hits, Zambia kicks into high gear. Temperatures are rising but it stays chilly in the mornings and evenings. All camps are open in all the national parks, with the South Luangwa the best option for game, the Lower Zambezi for river cruises and fishing, and the Kafue for remote wilderness. Victoria Falls is spectacular, without being overly wet.

Elephant in the Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

Visiting Zambia in August

The hotter weather and drier bush means walking safaris are excellent across the country. This is the prime time of year to combine game viewing and Victoria Falls.

Carmine bee-eaters, South Luangwa National Park

Visiting Zambia in September

September is a superb time to be on safari. Temperatures in the high 20°Cs make the days pleasant, and the water sources are drying up so animals congregate by the rivers and waterholes. Victoria Falls is not as dramatic as earlier months but is still impressive. Meanwhile, carmine bee-eaters arrive in their thousands to nest in the river banks.

  • Carmine bee-eaters arrive: This month sees the carmine bee-eaters arrive, with flocks of hundreds nesting in river banks, providing a thrilling spectacle of colour and sound in South Luangwa National Park

Rhino, Mosi Ao Tunya National Park, Livingstone

Visiting Zambia in October

The heat increases through October and game viewing is best done early and late in the day to escape the midday temperatures.

Lion, Lower Zambezi National Park

Visiting Zambia in November

The rains arrive in the latter half of the month, but as they are not regular they are not too disruptive and the bonus is seeing dramatic skies with storm clouds building. Temperatures are high and it can be muggy. Some camps close but lots stay open and are great value. You may also be able to see lots of young animals being born.

  • Great bat migration: Experience the world's largest mammalian migration as millions of bats fill the skies in a remote part of Zambia.

Walking Safari in North Luangwa

Visiting Zambia in December

Rains fall regularly, the rivers rise and the bush gets thicker and more colourful. This is an excellent value time to travel.

best time to visit Zambia

Understanding Zambia’s Climate

Zambia’s geographical diversity brings a range of climates. In the north, you’ll see heat and humidity, while the south flaunts a more mild environment. The country experiences two primary seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

Seasons in Zambia

A. dry season (may to november).

The dry season, spanning from May to November, is the best time to visit Zambia for travelers seeking a classic safari experience. Let’s break it down further:

1. May to July: Early Dry Season

During these months, Zambia enjoys mild temperatures and clear skies. The days are warm, and the nights are pleasantly cool. It’s the best time to visit Zambia for game viewing, as animals congregate around limited water sources.

2. August to October: Peak Dry Season

The peak dry season offers superb game viewing. With the grass turning golden, spotting wildlife becomes easier. Expect cooler nights and a safari experience you won’t forget.

3. November: Late Dry Season

In November, temperatures rise as the wet season approaches. It’s the best time to visit Zambia for budget-conscious travelers, as some lodges offer lower rates. You might also witness young animals being born.

B. Wet Season (December to April)

The wet season, from December to April, is known as the green season. While lush landscapes and minimal crowds are appealing, there are unique challenges:

1. December to February: Early Wet Season

Lush greenery and vibrant landscapes define these months. Occasional rain showers may interrupt your plans. However, if you’re a bird enthusiast, this is a paradise for birdwatching.

2. March to April: Peak Wet Season

March to April is the peak of the wet season. It’s the best time to visit Zambia to experience Victoria Falls at its fullest and most spectacular. However, expect more rain and potential flooding challenges.

Wildlife Viewing in Zambia

A. dry season wildlife encounters.

The dry season, particularly from June to October, is the best time to visit Zambia for game viewing in Zambia. Here’s what to expect:

1. The Best Months for Game Viewing

If your primary goal is wildlife encounters, plan your visit between June and October. You’ll witness diverse animal behavior and enjoy remarkable sightings.

2. National Parks and Their Unique Offerings

Zambia’s national parks, like South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, offer distinct experiences during the dry season. From open-topped game drives to walking safaris, you’ll find a variety of options.

B. Wet Season Wildlife Observations

Zambia’s wet season has its own charm, offering unique wildlife observations.

1. Unique Wildlife Encounters

The wet season showcases Zambia’s lush beauty and distinctive wildlife behavior. Some species give birth during this period, providing unique sightings.

2. Challenges of Game Viewing

The dense vegetation during the wet season can make spotting wildlife more challenging. Some lodges may close due to flooding, so plan your trip carefully.

In the next sections, we’ll explore Victoria Falls, events and festivals, practical travel considerations, recommended months for specific activities, and expert recommendations. Stay tuned for a comprehensive guide to help you plan your Zambia adventure.

Victoria Falls: A Year-Round Attraction

Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is a must-visit destination in Zambia. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or an adventure seeker, the falls offer something special year-round. In this section, we’ll explore what makes Victoria Falls a captivating destination during both the dry and wet seasons.

A. Victoria Falls in the Dry Season

The dry season, spanning from May to October, offers a fantastic opportunity to explore Victoria Falls. Here’s what to expect:

1. Experiencing the Falls from May to October

During the dry season, the Zambezi River is at its fullest, and Victoria Falls is a breathtaking sight. The water volume is high, and the falls are a magnificent display of nature’s power.

2. Adventure Activities and Sightseeing

The clear weather allows you to indulge in various adventure activities, including gorge swings, thrilling game viewing, and leisurely sightseeing. It’s a time of year when Victoria Falls truly lives up to its nickname, “The Smoke that Thunders.”

B. Victoria Falls in the Wet Season

The wet season, from December to April, provides a unique perspective on Victoria Falls.

1. The Spectacle of “The Smoke that Thunders”

During the wet season, the falls live up to their name. The immense volume of water creates a mesmerizing spectacle, with spray and mist visible from a distance.

2. Visiting During Camp Closures

It’s worth noting that some lodges near Victoria Falls close briefly during the wet season. However, visiting at this time allows you to witness the falls in their full glory with fewer crowds.

Next, we’ll delve into events and festivals in Zambia, offering cultural and natural spectacles for travelers.

Events and Festivals

Zambia is not just about wildlife and landscapes; it’s a country rich in culture and traditions. Here are two remarkable events that can enhance your Zambia experience.

A. Kuomboka Festival

The Kuomboka Festival is a cultural extravaganza held in Zambia, offering a unique perspective on the local Lozi people’s traditions. Here’s what you need to know:

1. An Exceptional Cultural Experience

Kuomboka marks the annual move of the Lozi king from his compound on the floodplains to higher ground. The festival is a colorful display of tradition, featuring majestic boat processions and the rhythmic beats of the royal Maoma drums.

2. Timing and Significance

The festival typically occurs at the end of the rainy season in April, coinciding with the Zambezi River flooding the plains. It’s a fascinating cultural event worth planning your trip around.

B. Great Bat Migration

Zambia hosts one of the world’s most incredible natural phenomena – the great bat migration. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Witnessing the World’s Largest Mammalian Migration

In a remote part of Zambia, millions of bats take to the skies during their annual migration. The spectacle is a must-see for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

As we continue our journey through Zambia’s seasons and experiences, the next section will address practical travel considerations, including crowd levels and ideal months for specific activities.

best time to visit Zambia

Practical Travel Considerations

Traveling to Zambia requires careful planning, taking into account crowd levels, budget considerations, and the timing of specific activities.

A. Crowds and Rates

Understanding how crowd levels change with the seasons is essential.

1. How Crowd Levels Change with the Seasons

During the dry season, especially from June to October, Zambia’s national parks are popular, leading to higher rates and more tourists. In contrast, the wet season brings a significant drop in crowds. Many travelers prefer the green season for its solitude and reduced rates.

2. Exploring the Best of Both Worlds

If you prefer a balance between crowd levels and weather conditions, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of June and November. This way, you can enjoy quieter camps and excellent game viewing.

B. Ideal Months for Specific Activities

Plan your Zambia adventure based on your interests and the activities you wish to pursue.

1. Game Viewing and Safaris

For an unparalleled game viewing experience, target the dry season, particularly from June to October. During this time, the wildlife is abundant, and the dry conditions make animal spotting more accessible.

2. Water Sports and Activities

If you’re eager to engage in water sports on the Zambezi River or take a dip at the top of Victoria Falls, July is an ideal month. The lower water levels create the perfect conditions for such adventures.

3. Birdwatching and Green Season

For bird enthusiasts and those seeking vibrant green landscapes, the wet season from December to April offers the best birdwatching opportunities. The lush surroundings come alive with migratory birds, making it a paradise for ornithologists.

As we approach the end of our aide, now is the best time to visit Zambia to look for experiences from specialists who know Zambia inside and out.

What is the best time for a holiday in Zambia?

Apr 10, 2020

beste reistijd zambia

Are you considering a vacation to Zambia and wondering what is the best time to travel? We are happy to assist you. In this article we share information about the weather in Zambia, the best time to spot wildlife and other things to consider.

How’s the weather in Zambia?

Whether you go on a sun holiday, ski holiday or safari: first of all, you want nice weather on holiday. Not too hot, but certainly not too cold. Zambia has a tropical climate and has three seasons:

  • April to August: it is mostly dry, with an average temperature of 25 ° C . The nights are chilly and the days are pleasant.
  • September to November: the temperature rises. Average temperatures well above 30 ° C are the rule rather than the exception. This season is therefore also called the warm season .
  • December to April: the temperature drops again to just below 30 ° C on average. This is also known as the wet season because on average there is more rain than the rest of the year.

Weer in Zambia

Best travel period to spot animals

You probably won’t go to Zambia to lie by the pool. Of course you want to spot wildlife!

Wildlife can be found all year round. But the best time to spot wildlife is the warm season (from September to November). As it has been dry for months, trees and shrubs wither, causing animals to hide less well. There is also less to no rain, which means that the water sources dry up and become scarce. You will easily be able to spot animals around the remaining water sources.

Other points of attention

Besides the weather and the animals that you will find at different times of the year, there are other things that determine the best travel time for Zambia. Some points to take into account in your decision:

  • From April onwards there is a large supply of water from Angola. This makes the Victoria Falls more spectacular than ever!
  • In the summer months (June to August) it is busier in the parks than in other periods. After all, European and US tourists (with children) have summer holidays.
  • National elections and public holidays can sometimes lead to reduced public transport and closings of shops and petrol stations. In the travel offer of Khokelo Safaris we drive with our own vehicle, so fortunately we do not suffer much from that.

Best travel time Zambia

The best travel period for a holiday to Zambia is from April to August. The temperature is pleasant and there is little rain. Are you a real bird watcher and not afraid of getting wet? Then travel in the wet season (November to April) when the birds show themselves in large numbers again. Do you also want to experience an adventurous safari in Zambia? A travel planner shares the 10 biggest mistakes people make while booking all-inclusive vacations

  • As a travel planner, I regularly stay at all-inclusive resorts and book luxury trips for my clients.
  • The vacations can be daunting and complicated to book, and many people make mistakes along the way.
  • Booking the cheapest room , requesting an ocean view, and always bringing kids isn't the way to go.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , one of my areas of expertise is booking all-inclusive vacations.

The luxury trips can be complex to book, so it's easy to get tripped up if you're new to them. And if you're spending upwards of $3,000 for a weeklong getaway for two, you want to ensure you're getting your money's worth.

Here are the biggest mistakes people make while booking all-inclusive vacations .

Jumping into internet searches before thinking about what you want

best travel time to zambia

When choosing an all-inclusive resort , it's important to consider your dream vacation before you even start looking online. Determining a trip bucket list will greatly help to narrow down your search.

I encourage clients to think about things like their budget, nonnegotiable amenities, ideal locations, flight accessibility, desired room features, and resort size.

Booking the cheapest room at the cheapest resort

best travel time to zambia

In all-inclusive travel, you truly get what you pay for.

I recommend focusing searches on properties with at least a 4.5 rating. Value properties often struggle to provide quality food options, comfortable accommodations, and adequate service.

Although entry-level rooms are the least expensive, booking them can also come at a price.

The cheapest rooms can have views of the parking lot or construction sites. Or they're located on the ground floor, which can get musty if you're in a humid, tropical location.

You can often upgrade to a better room for a minimal extra cost, and I think it's more than worth it. If you're really on a strict budget, shorten your trip by a day or two to allow for a higher-quality experience.

Taking your kids along every time

best travel time to zambia

There are many great kid-friendly, all-inclusive resorts, but taking an adults-only trip is so much fun.

Grab your friends, family, or significant others to rewind for a few days without the kids.

On a recent trip to Le Blanc Spa Resort in Cancún, my husband and I appreciated the time we spent reconnecting, unwinding, and unplugging from work and family responsibilities.

Forgetting to research the food

best travel time to zambia

One of the best parts of an all-inclusive vacation is enjoying the all-you-can-eat cuisine and top-shelf drink selections.

Spending up to a week at a luxury resort with mediocre food can be an unenjoyable experience. When reading reviews, p ay close attention to comments about the food quality.

I love the food and drinks at Palace, Sandals, and Beaches resorts and often recommend them to my clients.

Completely ruling out hurricane season

best travel time to zambia

Booking a trip to the Caribbean or Mexico in summer and fall ( hurricane season ) carries some risk, but prices are usually significantly lower than at other times of the year.

The weather can be gorgeous, and there's no guarantee your trip will be impacted by bad weather. If you're concerned, definitely keep an eye on the weather and add on travel insurance while you're booking.

My husband and I honeymooned in the Caribbean in the fall , and the weather was some of the best I have ever had on a vacation.

Booking an ocean-view room

best travel time to zambia

One of the biggest disappointments I hear from clients is that their view didn't meet their expectations.

Some resorts are more liberal with their categorization of partial-ocean-view and ocean-view rooms — maybe you can see a sliver of blue through the trees if you crane your neck.

If you want to see the beautiful blue of the sea from your balcony, you need to book an oceanfront room.

Limiting your search to tropical destinations

best travel time to zambia

Many popular all-inclusive resorts are in tropical locations , but there are also some great options in places like Canada, Europe, and Japan.

Club Med offers all-inclusive resorts worldwide. One of its newest offerings is Club Med Charlevoix, which offers an all-inclusive ski experience in the winter and an adventure experience in the summer.

Trusting your friend's recommendations implicitly

best travel time to zambia

Your friend might have impeccable taste, but that doesn't mean their favorite resort meets your style or needs.

One of my clients might love a resort, but another may not enjoy the experience at all. Finding the resort that's right for you is a very personal process.

Not booking with a travel planner

best travel time to zambia

Sure, I'm a little biased, but hear me out: Choosing the right destinations and resorts for your all-inclusive vacation can be daunting. In Mexico alone, there are hundreds of lodgings to choose from.

Most travel planners offer complimentary services (we get commissions from hotels and other bookings), which can greatly reduce the headache of planning your trip.

I always look for the best pricing and make sure to support my clients before, during, and after their vacations so they can relax.

As part of being an agent, I also visit resorts to vet them for my clients. Reading reviews online can be helpful, but they can also be confusing, so I like to be able to make personal recommendations.

europe shoulder season travel

Come summer, travel to Europe will be top of mind for plenty of Americans with vacation on the brain.

But can we afford it? Summers especially can be crowded, hot and packed with tourists driving up rates as locals flee for the countryside and beaches — not really the best time to be visiting.

Plus, this year, there’s an extra level of expense added, with the 2024 Olympics taking Paris for the months of July and August.

A tower in the city

And that won’t just impact Paris, but all the destinations like the French wine regions, the Cote d’Azur and even London and Brussels and Amsterdam — all easily accessible by rail and likely to receive plenty of extra visitors.

So you might still be going — but you might be going before or after the summer, this time around. And according to a new study , that’s totally fine.

For example, did you know that Paris can be a pretty good deal, as long as you’re not insisting on the peak travel periods?

The number crunchers at Radical Storage urge travelers not looking to go into heavy debt to select the shoulder season, when visitors can save a whopping average of 60.3% on their hotel stays, one of biggest budget busters on a Paris itinerary, where peak season nightly rates averaged $866.

Wait until shoulder season and see those same rates plummet to $344, the research revealed. That’s a discount of $522.

Shoulder seasons can vary by destination, but are by definition the times between peak and off-peak. And, most importantly, unlike during low season, the weather isn’t terrible. (If you’ve spent a winter in Paris, you know that’s an issue.)

A bridge over water with a building in the background in Budapest

“Shoulder season is the period before or after peak season but not yet the off-season. For example, many European destinations have a very busy summer (July/August) but May, June, September, and October may be considered shoulder season (it varies per destination), while January could be considered the off-season or low season,” the study stated.

“Visiting destinations in shoulder season usually means lower costs and lower crowds, while still keeping good enough weather for tourism.”

To find the best times to travel to Europe, the study pored over data from Google Flights and prices for thousands of hotels. Besides beaucoup bargain boltholes in Paris, they also found that flights to Budapest in the off-season sank to 56.6% of peak season highs, Thrillist reported .

And while Budapest had the best drop in prices, it was far from the best deal, overall — peak pricing for cities like Stockholm from the States averaged about $778, according to the study, and $537 during shoulder season — a drop of 30.9 percent.

As part of the study’s findings, the authors compiled a list of the best shoulder season month to visit a selection of cities around the world. Here are their picks for many of Europe’s most popular destinations.

Sequoia National Park’s giants are the friendly type. Hugs are welcome.

best travel time to zambia

People all over the world watched with rapt attention in 2021 as wildfire threatened to engulf the world’s largest tree . Firefighters carefully wrapped the base of the General Sherman Tree in shiny, protective blanketing as flames drew closer at Sequoia National Park .

Ultimately, the roughly 275-foot-tall icon was spared, but other giant sequoias weren’t so lucky. Redwood Mountain Grove in neighboring Kings Canyon National Park “lost an estimated 974 to 1,574 large sequoias,” according to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, which are managed jointly.

“Given the amount of giant sequoias that were lost in the last few years – almost 20% of the entire giant sequoia population was lost in a short amount of time – we're not feeling as confident as we were just a few years ago about these trees really being around for generations and generations to come,” said Sintia Kawasaki-Yee, chief of Communications and Management Support for both parks in California. “We really want to bring attention to their mortality.”

That’s not the only thing Sequoia visitors should know.

What is so special about Sequoia National Park?

Sequoia protects the largest trees in the world and a wide array of habitats.

“I would say the most special feature is that you enter at about, I want to say, 1,600 feet of elevation and within about a 45-minute span, you're able to reach 6,500 feet, which is a huge elevation gain in a really small amount of miles,” said Kawasaki-Yee. “You come in in the foothills area. In the spring, we have really great wildflowers. We have the river. We have great access there year-round, but if you drive just 45 minutes into Giant Forest , you get to see the change in the terrain and wildlife.”

Visitors can feel the change too, as temperatures dip and winds whip higher up, so pack accordingly.

Is the General Sherman Tree the tallest tree in the world?

No. It’s not the tallest tree in the world. That title belongs to Hyperion, a coast redwood at Redwood National Park, according to Guinness World Records .But the General Sherman Tree is the largest by volume, with a  trunk volume of 52,508 cubic feet, according to the park.

Can you touch the General Sherman Tree?

No. “The Sherman Tree is fenced off, so you cannot touch it, but there are many other sequoias in that same area that you can definitely walk up to and touch,” said Kawasaki-Yee.

She recommends feeling their fibrous bark, which she noted is softer to the touch than one might expect.

“Feel free to hug a tree, connect with a tree,” she added. “That connection is really important to really build that connection for people and hopefully that commitment to protect these trees in the long term.”

From Acadia to Zion: What travelers should know about each of America's national parks

Which park is better, Redwood or Sequoia?

“They're basically siblings, and so it's like comparing your kids,” Patrick Taylor, Interpretation and Education manager for the National Park Service at Redwood , told USA TODAY in April. “You love them both for slightly different reasons.”

He explained that giant sequoias tend to have more volume to them.

“So they're bigger in the sense that they usually have a wider base, and they don't taper off as fast,” he said. “The coastal redwoods are usually a little taller and a little more slender.”

Is Sequoia National Park free?

No. Most visitors will have to pay a flat $35 vehicle entrance fee that covers access to both Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

Certain groups are eligible for free entry to all national parks, namely military service members, veterans, Gold Star families , U.S. citizens and permanent residents with permanent disabilities, and fourth graders and their families .

Can you just drive through Sequoia National Park?

Yes. “You can actually do both parks in one drive,” said Kawasaki-Yee. “A lot of people that are doing road trips will drive through both parks on the same day or the same trip.”

The park is located about an-hour-and-a-half drive from Fresno. Fresno Yosemite International Airport is the nearest commercial airport.

What is the best time of year to visit Sequoia National Park?

Kawasaki-Yee recommends visiting in the spring or fall to avoid summer crowds and winter road closures.

“Maybe right before Memorial Day weekend, so you don't get the crowds but you still get access to the areas,” she suggested.

Can I stay inside Sequoia National Park?

Yes. The park offers a variety of on-site camping and lodging , though some lodges, operated by third parties, only open seasonally.

Who are the Indigenous people of the area?

“Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are the homelands of the Mono (Monache), Yokuts, Tübatulabal, Paiute, and Western Shoshone,” according to the parks’ website, which lists the following affiliated federally recognized tribes:

  • Big Pine Band of Owens Valley Paiute Shoshone Indians
  • Big Sandy Rancheria Band of Western Mono Indians
  • Bishop Paiute Tribe
  • Bridgeport Indian Colony
  • Cold Springs Rancheria
  • Fort Independence Indian Community of Paiute Indians
  • Fort Mojave Indian Tribe
  • North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians
  • Paiute-Shoshone Indians of the Lone Pine Community
  • Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians

Methodology

Discover has a variety of credit card offerings. We evaluated annual fees, cash-back offers, APRs, and introductory offers. The best were chosen for their unique features geared toward specific cardholders. These include cards for cash back, travel , gas , restaurants , balance transfers , and rebuilding credit .

How to pick the best Discover credit card for you

Picking the best Discover credit card depends on your credit profile and what you want to earn. Do you have good credit and want to earn the most cash back? Are you rebuilding your credit and just need a card that doesn’t charge a ton of fees? There are Discover cards to match a variety of priorities.

Decide what you want to earn

The two main things you’ll earn on a Discover credit card are cash back and miles. Discover is known for its cash back, and the miles rewards are similar. If you’d rather earn miles than cash back, you can apply for the Discover it Miles credit card. Every other Discover card earns cash back, even the student and secured cards.

Pick a card that matches your credit profile

  • Student . Discover has credit cards perfect for students, with qualification requirements suitable for those with little or no credit history. They’ll even earn you rewards, to boot. As we explained in detail above, the Discover it Student® Cash Back and Discover it Student® Chrome Card both earn rewards.
  • Rebuilding credit . If you’re on the path to rebuild your credit, the Discover it Secured credit card may be the way to go. There is no credit check and the security deposit can be as little as $200.
  • Traveler . The Discover it Miles Card is Discover’s card for award travel. Redemptions are made at a fixed value of 100 miles = $1, which is much like Discover’s cash back redemption. You’ll need good to excellent credit to be approved.
  • Household shopper . If most of your expenses are for household goods, you might be happy earning cash back from one of the Discover cash-back cards. Take a look at what you currently spend money on the most and choose a card that earns bonus points in those categories. For example, if you spend a lot of money on gas, you may want to go for the Discover it Gas and Restaurant Card. A good-to-excellent credit score is required.

Discover credit cards aren’t the flashiest cards around, but they are solid—especially for those new to credit. None of the cards charge an annual fee and the APRs are on par with other cards. The cash back earnings and redemptions are average, and introductory offers include a matching cash back offer for a year and 0% APR for an introductory period.

Notch8 offers a delicious traditional spread.

We could all use a little glamour on our weekends. While Vancouver may be known more for its striking natural setting and myriad outdoor adventures than for its opulent eating , the city can surprise you with its celebratory weekend brunches.

We’ve rounded up five of our favorite destinations to enjoy when Saturday or Sunday calls for something special.

Classic Brunch at Notch8

When nothing but a classic brunch will do, head for Notch8, the glamourous dining room and lounge at Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Fairmont Hotel Vancouver , Vancouver’s “Castle in the City.”

At this traditional buffet, chefs stand by to cook eggs to order or carve the weekend roast. You can assemble your salad, dig into an ocean’s worth of chilled seafood or go sweet with the chocolate banana bread pudding. A peach bellini, a Canadian Caesar (a bloody mary with Clamato juice) or a simple glass of prosecco make excellent accompaniments.

Try mushroom toast and inventive mocktails at Botanist.

OpenAI Gets Better Memory, New Lawsuits, And Sora’s First Music Video

Russian military personnel move into niger air base housing some us troops, madden 25 hall of famer will discontinue his relationship with ea.

High-Style Weekending at Botanist

From the sleek Asian-influenced design to the recently launched Nordic Spa experience, everything about Five-Star Fairmont Pacific Rim in downtown Vancouver says “high style.” And the multi-course weekend brunch at Botanist, the property’s flagship restaurant, is no exception.

Choose from two or three courses, with highlights ranging from mushroom toast with truffle aioli or burrata salad with smoked beets to fermented chili-torched salmon or decadently rich lobster eggs Benedict. While you can opt for a cocktail like Me Time (a blend of rum, blackberry, chai and crème de cacao), inventive alcohol-free drinks such as Raspberry Beret (raspberry, elderflower and black tea) or the spring-celebrating First Bloom (cherry blossom tea, Douglas fir, yuzu and soda) are great alternatives.

Add a sweet to wrap up your meal — perhaps almond crème brûlée or a fantasia of chocolate and cherries. It’s the weekend, after all.

Have a throwback brunch at Parq Vancouver.

Back to the ’80s at The Victor’s Disco Brunch

If you’re in the mood to kick off your weekend with a livelier scene, dance back to the ’80s at The Victor’s Disco Brunch.

All of the throwback buffet fun at The Victor — the restaurant sits in Parq Vancouver, the copper-clad complex housing Forbes Travel Guide Recommended properties JW Marriott Parq Vancouver and The Douglas — takes place on the third Sunday of each month.

There’ll be plenty of good times as you concoct your cocktail at the Bloody Bar. Or, for something fizzier, opt for a flight from a rolling mimosa cart where you’ll find bubbles blending with orange, blood orange, raspberry and pomegranate juices.

Seafood is a standout among the ample spread. There’s a raw bar with fresh oysters, tuna poke, a selection of sushi and steamed mussels and clams. Carnivores might head directly to the carving station while everyone else gravitates to the pastry table.

Enjoy some delicious dim sum.

Upscale Dim Sum at Mott 32

You don’t have to wait for the weekend for an elaborate dim sum meal at Mott 32 at Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Paradox Hotel Vancouver . In the octagonal dining room, where exposed concrete and other industrial components blend with traditional Asian design elements, the Vancouver branch of this luxurious Hong Kong-based restaurant serves upscale dim sum every day.

The kitchen upgrades classic tea-lunch dishes with luxe ingredients and inventive twists. Inside the shu mai , topped with black truffle, is a perfectly runny quail egg, while the shrimp-stuffed rice rolls balance smooth rice wraps with a satisfying crunch. The bright orange, hot and sour Iberico pork soup dumplings are made with carrot puree (for the vivid color) and moderately spicy broth.

Chambar , a Local Favorite

One of Vancouver’s most welcoming weekend spots is Chambar , where the chef mixes his Belgian heritage with North African flavors and plenty of local ingredients.

Get your morning going with Do It Yourself Mimosas, a carafe of fresh orange juice and a bottle of bubbly for the table. Foodwise, moules frites (mussels and fries) are a specialty, and the fricassee (a hearty plate with braised short ribs, fried eggs, caramelized onions and potatoes) is always a good choice.

Waffles are another favorite, starting with a simple version served with your choice of sauce, like berry compote, salted caramel or classic dark chocolate. But it’s hard to pass up the gaufre à la raclette , a sourdough waffle layered with prosciutto, mushroom ragoût, soft-boiled eggs, melted cheese, frisée and candied bacon salad.

What to expect when visiting Disneyland in May

Ways to save money at disneyland, beware of crowds.

For a brief period this month, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, is bringing together a trifecta of entertainment across both of its theme parks.

Disneyland regularly hosts special festivals at the park for Halloween and other holidays, but this is one of the rare times of the year when visitors can experience two festivals at once.

This year’s Pixar Fest and Seasons of the Force feature two beloved franchises — Pixar and Star Wars — through over-the-top food and meet-and-greets with characters never seen before in the parks. Unique entertainment options include a fireworks show that depending on where you view it is either Pixar- or Star Wars-themed with two separate soundtracks.

And that’s not all. One of Disney’s most iconic nighttime shows, “Fantasmic!,” returns in May.

Plus, there’s a ticket offer for Southern California residents that could make experiencing this somewhat affordable — at least by Disney standards.

Pixar Fest kicks off

From now through Aug. 4, Disneyland Resort is sporting a new makeover for Pixar Fest, a festival devoted to films made by the company’s computer-animation subsidiary, Pixar Animation Studios. NerdWallet got an inside look during a press event for the festival's kickoff.

As part of Pixar Fest, there’s an abundance of Pixar-themed entertainment, including a dance party and a new daytime parade. Character meet-and-greets will include Pixar characters such as Wade and Ember from “Elemental" for the first time at the Disneyland Resort.

You’ll also see decorations throughout both theme parks, including a 25-foot tall sculpture of the iconic Pixar Ball outside Disneyland’s main gate.

One of the big draws of Disney festivals is the food. For example, you might see Mr. Potato Head-inspired churros, which top the iconic snack with, yes, potato chips.

On May 10, a series of marketplace stands will open at Disney California Adventure Park with even more limited-time food offerings based on some of Pixar’s newer films, including Hanger Management inspired by “Inside Out.”

Then, there are the fireworks. Tinker Bell is the usual star of Disney fireworks shows, but during Pixar Fest, Buzz takes the torch and flies across the sky between Matterhorn Bobsleds and Sleeping Beauty Castle. Later, Carl and Ellie’s house featured in “Up” floats above the castle.

Season of the Force continues

For fans who prefer Chewbacca over Sulley as their hairy creature of choice, May also features a Star Wars-themed festival called Season of the Force. Season of the Force runs through June 2, providing about a month where both festivals overlap.

“The two festivals aren’t actually intended to interact with each other,” says Tracy Halas, creative director at Disney Live Entertainment. “It’s really just an opportunity to share everything and have something for everybody at the parks.”

And there are plenty of Star Wars fans, indeed. After all, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still holds the title of highest-grossing film of all time in the domestic market, according to Box Office Mojo.

Among the festival's star attractions is a temporary retheming of the Space Mountain ride to Hyperspace Mountain, where the soundtrack now includes the films’ iconic theme song. There’s also Star Wars-themed food, including a bantha burger based on the furry, horned mammals that roam the fictional planet of Tatooine.

While those Disneyland special events spotlight two of Disney’s biggest franchises, that’s still not the only reason why May could be the best month for Disneyland fans.

Fantasmic! returns

“Fantasmic!”, a nighttime show at Disneyland involving costumed characters, stunts and pyrotechnics, went dark after a massive, fire-breathing dragon prop fell victim to its own flames during a live performance in April 2023. That performance was cut short, marking the last show for more than a year. That changes on May 24, when the show returns.

Southern California resident tickets

Disney uses variable pricing on its theme park tickets , where higher-demand days command higher prices. Disneyland prices its one-day admission tickets across seven tiers, ranging from Tier 0 (least expensive) to Tier 6 (most expensive).

The average single-day ticket price in May is $162, about 7.4% cheaper than July’s average of $175, according to a NerdWallet analysis of Disney ticket prices.

For locals, a limited-time ticket option offers even lower prices. Southern California residents can purchase a three-day ticket package that costs $225 for weekday tickets ($75 per day) or $275 ($92 per day) for the version that offers weekend access, too.

The last day to use tickets sold through that promotion is June 2.

Hotel discounts

Then, there's another offer available to anyone — not just local residents — that could make trips more affordable. Hotel stays on Sunday through Thursday nights are as much as 15% off for trips booked via Disney's website through June 3 and completed by June 7.

Hotel prices can be the biggest cost in a Disneyland trip — more so than other expenses like food and theme park tickets. The weeknight hotel deal could make them more affordable. Plus, weekday theme park tickets tend to be cheaper than weekends, adding to the savings.

But for all the goodness set for May, you might have to contend with crowds. The ticket prices of Fantasmic!'s reopening weekend falls into the highest pricing tier, suggesting Disney is bracing for big crowds on that weekend.

High school students also descend upon Disney California Adventure on certain nights in May and June for Grad Nite. There may be bigger daytime crowds if students arrive early, and the park will close earlier than usual. This year’s Grad Nites are set for May 10, 14, 15, 17, 19, 22, 23, 28 and 31, as well as June 2, 5, 7, 9, 12 and 14.

Plus, with Southern California resident tickets expiring on June 2 and the summer blackout dates starting May 31 for certain annual pass holders, many people might squeeze in a visit in May.
