Sea Fishing Hartlepool

Key takeaways.

Hartlepool, a coastal town in County Durham, England, boasts a variety of sea fishing locations that cater to anglers of all skill levels. From historic piers to rugged rock marks and pristine beaches, Hartlepool's diverse coastline offers excellent opportunities for both local and visiting fishermen. Sea fishing tackle and bait can be easily procured at local shops, ensuring a well-equipped and enjoyable fishing experience.

Hartlepool's piers are popular among anglers for their accessibility and consistent catches. Some notable piers include:

  • Middleton Pier

These piers offer a chance to target species such as cod, whiting, mackerel, and flatfish, depending on the season. Ragworm, lugworm, and mackerel strip are effective baits for pier fishing. Check out the latest fishing gear to enhance your pier fishing experience.

Rock Marks and Heavy Ground

For anglers seeking a more challenging experience, Hartlepool's rock marks and heavy ground locations provide an opportunity to catch larger species. Popular spots include:

  • London Rock
  • Low Moor Head
  • North Rock Pipe
  • Old Town Wall
  • The Folly/Wreck Hole

These locations are best suited for experienced anglers due to the rough terrain and strong currents. Cod, bass, and conger eel are among the prized catches at these spots. Peeler crab, squid, and live baits work well in these areas. Equip yourself with sturdy boat fishing tackle for a successful session.

Clean Beaches

Hartlepool's clean beaches offer a more relaxed fishing experience, perfect for beginners and families. Notable beaches include:

  • Hartlepool Bay
  • Crimdon Beach
  • Parton Beach
  • Seaton Beach

These beaches are ideal for targeting flatfish, bass, and whiting during the summer months. Sand eel, mackerel strip, and ragworm are effective baits for beach fishing. Don't miss out on the fishing tackle sales to get the best deals on beach fishing gear.

Essential Gear for Hartlepool Sea Fishing

To make the most of your sea fishing experience in Hartlepool, it's crucial to have the right gear. Sea fishing tackle can be broadly categorized into the following essential components:

Sea Fishing Reels

A reliable reel is a must-have for any sea fishing setup. Choose from a variety of sea fishing reels , including fixed spool, multiplier, and baitcasting reels. Consider factors such as line capacity, drag system, and corrosion resistance when selecting a reel suitable for the Hartlepool coastline.

Matching your reel with the right sea fishing rod is essential for optimal performance. Factors to consider include rod length, power, and action. Longer rods are ideal for casting from beaches, while shorter, more powerful rods are suitable for fishing from piers and rock marks.

Terminal Tackle

Sea fishing terminal tackle includes items such as hooks, swivels, beads, and weights. Choosing the right terminal tackle depends on the type of fish you're targeting and the fishing location. For example, larger hooks and heavier weights are necessary when fishing in strong currents or targeting bigger species.

Clothing and Accessories

Wearing appropriate sea fishing clothing is crucial for staying comfortable and protected during your fishing sessions. Invest in waterproof and breathable jackets, trousers, and boots to withstand the elements. Don't forget to pack essential accessories like polarized sunglasses, a hat, and sun protection.

Fishing Line

Selecting the right sea fishing line is key to successful angling. Monofilament, braided, and fluorocarbon lines each have their advantages, depending on the fishing situation. Consider factors such as line diameter, breaking strain, and abrasion resistance when choosing a line for sea fishing in Hartlepool.

Boat Fishing in Hartlepool

For anglers looking to explore the deeper waters off the coast of Hartlepool, boat fishing offers an exciting opportunity to target a wide variety of species. When planning a boat fishing trip, it's essential to have the right gear to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience.

Investing in a high-quality boat reel is crucial for handling the demands of offshore fishing. Look for reels with high line capacity, smooth drag systems, and corrosion-resistant components to withstand the harsh saltwater environment. Multiplier reels and fixed spool reels are both popular choices for boat fishing.

Selecting the right boat fishing rod depends on the type of fishing you plan to do and the species you're targeting. Factors to consider include rod length, power, and action. Shorter, more powerful rods are ideal for battling large fish in deep water, while longer rods are suitable for casting lures or presenting baits at various depths.

Rod and Reel Combos

For a convenient and cost-effective solution, consider purchasing a boat rod and reel combo . These pre-matched setups are designed to work together seamlessly, taking the guesswork out of pairing the right rod with the right reel. Combos are available in various configurations to suit different fishing styles and target species.

When fishing from a boat, using boat lures can be a highly effective way to entice fish. Some popular lure options for boat fishing include:

  • Soft plastics

Experiment with different lure types, colors, and retrieval techniques to determine what works best for the specific conditions and target species in Hartlepool's offshore waters.

Tips for a Successful Hartlepool Sea Fishing Trip

To make the most of your sea fishing adventure in Hartlepool, consider the following tips:

  • Check the tide tables and weather forecast before planning your trip to ensure safe and favorable fishing conditions.
  • Visit local tackle shops or consult sea fishing guides to gain valuable insights into the best fishing spots, tactics, and bait choices for the area.
  • When targeting specific species like bass , research their seasonal movements and preferred habitats to increase your chances of success.
  • Be mindful of local fishing regulations, including size limits, bag limits, and closed seasons, to ensure sustainable fishing practices.
  • Practice catch and release whenever possible to help maintain healthy fish populations for future generations of anglers.

Remember, the key to a successful and enjoyable sea fishing trip in Hartlepool is a combination of proper preparation, the right gear, and a willingness to adapt to the ever-changing conditions of the sea.

7-year-old found safe after boat capsizes on fishing trip; her 2 grandfathers found dead

Portrait of Saman Shafiq

A 7-year-old girl was found safe while her grandfather and great-grandfather died after their boat capsized during a fishing trip at a park in Illinois.

The two men from Indiana were fishing with their 7-year-old granddaughter at the LaSalle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, about an hour and a half from Chicago, when their boat, a 17-foot Crestliner, capsized, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Monday. The girl was wearing a life jacket while the two men were not, police said.

Children shot: 4 children, ages 11-14, shot while driving around in stolen car in Minneapolis, police say

'Distressed boater'

Authorities received a 911 call "about a distressed boater at the 2,000-acre lake near Marseilles" shortly after noon Sunday, the news release said. They arrived at the scene to find a capsized vessel and the little girl on the shore with park visitors who came to her aid. The visitors also helped in contacting her mother and grandmother.

First responders from multiple agencies assisted in searching for the two men who fell into the water. They were recovered in the evening around 7:45 p.m. and were pronounced dead on scene by the LaSalle County coroner, the department said.

While the identities of the two men were not released, the news release said the girl's grandfather from Merrillville, Indiana was 53 and her great-grandfather from Gary, Indiana was 80.

An investigation into the incident and what caused the vessel to capsize is ongoing.

Man returns to Dampier Boat Ramp after having trouble with vessel overnight

By Jessica Shackleton

ABC Pilbara

Topic: Missing Person

boat fishing trips hartlepool

Kevin Cunningham arrived back at the Dampier Boat Ramp on Monday afternoon. ( ABC Pilbara: Rosemary Murphy )

The search for Kevin Cunningham has ended after he arrived safely at the Dampier boat ramp on Monday afternoon.

Fears were raised when his vehicle and boat trailer were located at the boat ramp this morning.

He has told police he camped overnight on an island after having trouble with the vessel.

Police have called off the search for 44-year-old Kevin Cunningham after he arrived back at the Dampier Boat Ramp on Monday afternoon.

Police said Mr Cunningham arrived back at the boat ramp after lunch time and he said he ran into trouble with his vessel.

As a result, Mr Cunningham camped overnight at Rosemary Island and continued his trip back at a slow speed today.

Police said Mr Cunningham and his dog that was in the boat with him were both in good health.

A marine and air search was underway in Western Australia's north-west after the fisherman failed to return home from a boat trip overnight.

WA police officers said Mr Cunningham was last heard from at 7pm on Sunday.

Police said he had told an associate that he was navigating his vessel back from the Wandoo oil field to a boat ramp in Dampier, about 21 kilometres from Karratha.

Wandoo, owned by Vermilion Oil and Gas, is an oil platform and popular fishing spot.

It is located about 67km north-west of Dampier port.

Local police said they found Mr Cunningham's vehicle and boat trailer at the Dampier boat ramp this morning.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been driving a 5.8-metre black Bar Crusher, a type of aluminium boat.

A search and rescue jet has been sent from Perth to begin an aerial search of the Dampier coast.

Crews from Marine Rescue Dampier are assisting Karratha Police with the search.

Australian Border Force and Pilbara Ports have provided several vessels, alongside a Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development fishing boat that was deployed from nearby Port Walcott, about 51km east of the search area.

Police said they were concerned for Mr Cunningham's welfare and asked the public to provide information about his current whereabouts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Water Police Coordination Centre on 08 9442 8600 or 131 444.

7 Last-Minute Escapes for Labor Day Weekend

If you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places in North America that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

A cityscape of buildings and narrow streets that leads to a tall tower on a hill. Behind it is a large bay with small islands and boats.

By Shannon Sims

It might sound like an impossible request: a last-minute Labor Day getaway with gorgeous weather and minimal crowds that you can squeeze into a long weekend. There are good reasons many destinations across North America won’t fit the bill. Wildfires are burning in some parts of the West, tropical disturbances are brewing in the Caribbean, the East Coast’s coastal retreats are packed, and much of the South is sweaty and oh so steamy. But if you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

Here are seven inspirations in North America for a Labor Day getaway.

North Carolina

Hike to magical waterfalls

Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Asheville, N.C., and covering 500,000-plus acres, Pisgah National Forest is a magical place to be immersed in nature. American goldfinches and Carolina chickadees sing high above waterfalls framed by lush green trees, and babbling streams pour down moss-covered rocks hiding salamanders, newts and crayfish.

During the summer, these wooded areas are chock-full of children at summer camp, and the trails are often busy with hikers. But by Labor Day, most of the kids have returned home, while the weather is often perfect, with average temperatures in the seventies. You have your pick of activities — bird-watching, fly fishing, waterfall dousing and hiking.

Easy trails can be found at the North Carolina Arboretum , but for a shaded, moderate hike to a waterfall in which you can douse, check out Catawba Falls Trail . For another moderate hike (but no swimming), there is Linville Gorge and Falls , nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. Advanced hikers can summit the 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell , the highest peak in the Eastern United States, in Mount Mitchell State Park, which is surrounded by Pisgah Forest.

Later, make your way back to Asheville , where a robust restaurant and brewery scene offers a perfect setting for sharing stories of your day. Local favorites include Cúrate for upscale tapas, Chai Pani for Indian food and Wicked Weed Brewing for hoppy deliciousness.

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” may be a clichéd phrase, but anyone who has visited this California city during the summer most likely experienced fog, dank air and brisk wind. But September and October are San Francisco’s warmest and brightest months of the year.

A long weekend is just enough for first timers to sample the city’s best-known attractions. Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge . Board a cable car as it clangs up and down the city’s hills. Explore Alcatraz Island on a three-hour tour (book ahead). Take in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, which may be less chaotic with many children back in school. Watch a home game of the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park , right on the bay. Or check out the Presidio Tunnel Tops , a newly developed stretch of national park land featuring stunning panoramic views.

The city is a particularly special destination for those interested in L.G.B.T.Q. history. The GLBT Historical Society Museum , nicknamed the Queer Smithsonian, is a good place to start, as is a stroll through the Castro neighborhood or a stop at the Castro’s first gay bar, opened in 1963 as the Missouri Mule (now called Beaux).

Swim, fish, boat, then sip, at the Finger Lakes

One of the largest Finger Lakes in upstate New York, Keuka Lake stretches about 20 miles and draws visitors with clear-water swimming, paddling, kayaking and fishing. Labor Day marks the end of its high summer season.

Visitors can use picnic tables, playgrounds and swimming areas off sandy beaches at Keuka Lake State Park near Branchport or Red Jacket Park in the village of Penn Yan, on the lake’s northern end.

On its southern shores, the charming village of Hammondsport has cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which are clustered around the Pulteney Square Historic District .

Fishing is a big draw, with brown trout, yellow perch and more inhabiting the lake’s deep waters. You can buy your own fishing equipment at Jake’s Boat Livery , or get the professionals to do it by chartering a fishing expedition through Summit to Stream Adventures .

Don’t forget the wine: 20 vineyards are scattered around the lakeshore, with six part of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail . You can visit most wineries on your own or with a tour.

Keuka Lake is a one- to two-hour drive from airports in Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse or Buffalo. The lake is about a five-hour drive from New York City.

Soak your stress away in alpine splendor

During Labor Day weekend, the I-70 corridor that connects Denver to the ski towns to the west, like Winter Park, Keystone and Breckenridge, can be bumper to bumper, especially getting back on Monday.

But nestled in the San Juan Mountains, about an hour’s drive from Telluride, is Ouray, an often overlooked gem for outdoor fun. Sure, there’s great hiking and canyoning, but there aren’t many towns where you can stroll down Main Street and stop into a boutique for shopping, a cafe for coffee and a hot springs for soaking. Ouray Hot Springs Pool is sulfur-free — in other words, no rotten-egg stink — and offers not just one pool but many: The family-friendly pools feature water slides, a volleyball net and a rolling log, while the adults-only soaking section is kept between 102 and 106 degrees.

Montrose Regional Airport , about an hour’s drive from Ouray, has direct flights to Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver.

Sample delicious urban delights

You won’t scratch the surface of what Mexico City offers in a long weekend, so consider tossing away those checklists and instead soak up the atmosphere in one or two neighborhoods.

Start by signing up for the city’s bike share app, Ecobici , for an easy way to get around town. The Roma neighborhood, a favorite among travelers, has shaded, walkable streets; inviting plazas; and some of the city’s best restaurants. For a neighborhood with a tad fewer tourists, try La Condesa , a short bike ride from Roma and between the two lovely green spaces called Bosque de Chapultepec and Parque México . Shopaholics should visit Polanco , where the commercial thoroughfare Presidente Masaryk Avenue offers luxury stores.

Whichever neighborhood you pick to explore, you’ll be delighted by the quality and flavors of food offered at the city’s restaurants, food carts and 11,000-plus taco shops. Even if a corner spot looks shabby, it might be producing food that could rank among the best bites you’ve ever had. Look no further than Taquería El Califa de León, an unassuming taco stand that won a Michelin star this year , as an example of the culinary magic that lies around any given corner.

Nova Scotia

Time-travel in a 1700s fishing village

About 62 miles southwest of downtown Halifax along Nova Scotia’s South Shore, breezy Lunenburg is a fishing village with charm — and fresh seafood — to spare.

Old Town Lunenburg is considered by UNESCO as the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Its colorful homes face tall ships moored in the harbor, transporting visitors back to the 1700s. Stroll around the area on your own, popping into local shops and restaurants, or sign up for a walking tour .

At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic , part of the Nova Scotia Museum , you can experience what life was like in a fishing village throughout the centuries, from early Mi’kmaq communities to the arrival of Black Loyalists in 1783 to today. The museum is housed in an old fish processing plant, and the Old Fish Factory Restaurant now serves Nova Scotia lobster rolls on a wharf-side patio.

Fresh lobster is available year-round in Nova Scotia, so check out some stops on the Nova Scotia Lobster Trail . But don’t forget much of the Atlantic’s bounty: mussels, scallops, halibut, Arctic char, cod — even a seaweed called dulse — can be found on local menus.

Roam and ride in the sand dunes

The Great Lakes were made for summer, but the challenge is finding a spot that isn’t too crowded. Silver Lake Sand Dunes is a destination even many Michiganders don’t know about.

Located an hour-and-a-half drive from Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, the dunes comprise 2,000 acres and are part of Silver Lake State Park. Even though they are situated in the heart of the United States, the dunes will make you feel as if you’re roaming the sands of Arabia.

Activities at the park include swimming, canoeing and horseback riding along the beach, or hiking through the surrounding evergreen forests.

But a classic way to explore the dunes is through Mac Wood’s Dune Rides , a local company that for nearly a century has been taking visitors in open-top trucks for thrilling and informative rides through the sand.

While in the area, be sure to visit the Little Sable Point Lighthouse , an 1874 tower that was made more accessible to the public in 2010. Climb the tower and take in the lake, forests and dunes below.

Fishing in Hartlepool

Things to See & Do 17,571 Views

Hartlepool has established itself as one of the top wreck cod venues in the country. For sheer consistency of catches it proves hard to beat. The modern marina complex and has helped attract anglers from all corners of the UK.

WHERE TO FISH The popular inshore marks along the coast are reef and rough ground with tackle grabbing kelp beds. The fishing over these tends to be done on the drift, though on big tides and strong weather experienced skippers anchor up.

Wrecks dominate the fishing from the port. Some wrecks lay close to shore and offer good supply of smaller fish as well as holding the odd monster! It’s the offshore wrecks past 20 miles, often 30 miles out  that give up the best fish and bigger catches.

SPECIES The main inshore fishing is done with codling in mind. Fish to 3lbs are average, but there is a sprinkling of bigger fish to 10lbs. These are virtually a year round target and are accompanied by coalfish, small ling and even occasional haddock. The summer sees ballan wrasse and pollack over the same ground. Cleaner marks hold whiting and flatfish.

TIDES Some tide run over the rougher inshore ground helps increase the catches, so it’s the middle to larger tides that are favoured for general drift fishing. However, the smaller neaps can still produce good catches, especially as seas are settling after a blow.

Over the wrecks, then you must target the neaps as giving the best opportunities. On the bigger tides the boats drift can be rapid with minimal time for lures and baits in the fish killing zone.

TACKLE Experienced anglers here choose mainly 50lb class rods and reel for all wreck pirk and lure work. With deep water and a good tide run you need all the lifting power you can get.

A 30lb rod and reel combination is okay over the inshore marks for feathering etc, and for the occasional spot of ledgering. The best feathers are the normal white cod type on 4/0 hooks and keep these sharp.

BAITS For baited feather work use mussels, lug, rag even crab and clams, with fish a useable but less effective standby.

For the big wreck ling try baiting the pirks hooks with a couple of fillets or a full fresh flapper mackerel. Some of the biggest cod also hit this combination..

Shorelines with Steve Walker – Fishing around Hartlepool

In this article steve walker take us out and about around hartlepool’s productive shore marks., london rock.

You can park next to the nearby war memorial gardens and then access the beach via the ramp at the corner of the pier.

London Rock is a good winter low water mark situated right in the outside corner of the Heugh breakwater. From it you can fish into a big long hole with heavy ground consisting of boulders, rock ledges, and heavy kelp. You can fish the same ground from the rocks on the other side of this hole but London rock gives slightly better access and you can fish slightly further out. Although not often fished this is a very good mark in a slight sea when there is plenty of colour in the water and when it is known that any fish are close inshore. Heavy ground means heavy tackle, light rods and small multiplier reels are of no use here. A good stiff rod and ABU 7000 size reel with 35lb line straight through, and a rotten bottom rig with at least a strong pattern 3/0 hook is the minimum required. Anywhere between September and May will produce some good sized codling to 6lb or more, as well as the odd coalfish, eel and some big rockling. Crab will take codling at most times, either fresh or frozen, and frozen crab and lugworm will take fish during November to March. Various worm cocktails will take fish during the middle winter months, and any bait bulked out with a big ball of mussel is a sure winner for any codling. Bites can be ferocious from these kelp codling so try to hold your rod at all times and be prepared to bully any fish out of the kelp. Three hours either side of low water will give you plenty of fishing time but watch out for the water coming in behind you. Daylight sessions can be just as productive as a night session and if nothing has shown after a few hours there are plenty of other rock marks to try over towards the nearby lighthouse corner. Because any swell can wash over the end of the flat rock waders are a must when fishing here.

The summer months are quiet but a big low water will expose the far kelp beds and a big crab bait is sure to pick up at least a few codling from the heaviest ground on the left side of the hole.

Low Moor Head

There is plenty of safe parking on the promenade road between the Heugh breakwater and the Pilot Pier.

A good winter rock edge cod mark best fished over low water during or just after a very heavy sea situated half way between the Breakwater and Pilot pier The ground is very heavy consisting of deep gullies and thick kelp, though there is a bit of cleaner ground off to the right side. A heavy beachcaster and ABU 7000 size reel with 30lb to 35lb line straight through and a rotten bottom rig is the only way to fish here. Anything lighter and you will not get any gear or fish back. There is no need to cast far, forty yards will put you into deep enough water, and fish will often be taken closer in than this. Over to the right side there is a little gulley called the “Wham” which often produces some good bags of codling. The ground off from here is mainly flat rock and smallish boulders and a lightly sprung grip lead will often hold bottom and give you a good chance of getting your tackle back.

September to April will see codling taking fresh or frozen crab, mussel, ragworm and black lug, and any cocktail of these with crab will usually find any fish present. Crab isnt always essential as the mid winter months will see big worm baits tipped with razor clam take plenty of codling. A strong pattern 3/0 or 4/0 hook as part of a pennel rig with worm baits or a single hook for crab baits is the minimum required. Codling will average a good 4lb, plenty of fish to 6lb are taken, and most winters produce the odd double figure specimen. A day or night session will produce the fish and it is advisable to hold your rod at all times as the bites can be ferocious. If the nearby piers are crowded it can be worth a try to fish the tide back into the Wham and then move onto the rocks as the tide uncovers them. Coalfish, whiting, eels, and some specimen rockling can all be expected to show at some time.

Middleton Inner Pier

To get here you need to park on the southern side of the marina entrance either approaching from the Seaton Carew coast road or by following the signs through the town centre approaching from the north. The pier is just behind the yacht club site and there is plenty of parking in the main carpark or you can drive up a short dirt track to the edge of the main basin and it is a 50 metre walk to the pier.

There are two piers within the outer Middleton pier but this is the easiest to get to and you can fish within sight of your vehicle. During very heavy winter seas you can actually pick up a few codling from here when they get pushed up the deep channel which continues into the marina entrance. The main advantage of this pier however is that it is an excellent venue for junior anglers, quite safe to fish, and you can expect to catch several species in reasonable numbers although most of them will be on the small side. There are exceptions though, and at some times between April and October you can expect to land some specimen sized eels to 3lb or more, and sizable coalfish, codling together with the odd plaice . Some of these can be of a reasonable size and are probably fish that have been resident in the marina complex and have “escaped” when the lock gates have been opened to let the boat traffic out. For a lazy summer days fishing all you need is a light carp or spinning rod, a fixed spool reel loaded with 10lb line, a few traces with size 2 Aberdeens and a couple of 1oz sinkers. Plenty of ragworm and mussel can be collected locally and although peeler crab might be of a slight advantage in order to catch eels, coalfish or codling, it is certainly not essential. Whiting, rockling, blennies, pouting and other smaller species can all be taken in good numbers about 3 hours either side of high water. There are a few rocks close in to the pier sides but otherwise the bottom is all mud and sand and you should not lose much tackle.

North Rock Pipe

Access is quite easy, just park at the northern end of the promenade road, Marine Drive, then walk down the steps directly in front of the pipe which is about 500yds before the promenade end.

North Rock is a good winter low water mark and produces some big bags of codling anytime between September and March. The pipe structure is quite high so you can get onto it even on small ebb tides. It is best fished on a falling sea with a moderate swell running but it will also produce fish in calmer conditions especially on a night tide. If you are getting onto the pipe early on the ebb tide beware of a rogue wave washing over the end. A really big ebb tide will uncover the kelp beds at the end of the pipe when you can see where all the holes and gullies are. Casting anywhere off the left corner will put you into some reasonably deep water. Tackle losses can be high so use suitable heavy tackle. Consider using 30lb to 35lb line all the way through with a rotten bottom rig and you should get at least a few end rigs back and hopefully some fish.

Codling, coalfish, and eels are the main species to expect and the codling run to a good average of between 3lb to 4lb, with plenty of cod around the 6lb to 7lb mark landed each winter. A big crab and mussel cocktail will take codling early in the season, and it will take fish all year round, but once early November arrives most fish will be looking for a big black lug and ragworm cocktail. Use at least a strong pattern 3/0 hook on a 25lb hook length, and be prepared to reel in fast to avoid any snags and get any fish in.

A late evening session during the summer months will produce small codling, coalfish, eels, and the odd pouting to crab baits.

Old Town Wall

The Old Town Wall is the stretch of promenade between the New Pier to the north and Newburn Groyne to the south. To get here park in the marina or yacht club car park, or in the road behind the promenade next to the apartments and it is a short walk along the sea wall where you can then get a good view along the rocks and decide where to fish.

During the winter months it is best fished over a big high tide on a falling sea when some good bags of codling can be taken. Most winters see one or two double figure cod landed from here but conditions have to exactly right, and a night time tide is usually the most productive. If you are fishing the nearby Middleton Pier in a moderate swell and it is too crowded or there isn’t much showing it is worth moving to here because the codling can be very close inshore in the white water along this stretch of beach. You will need to jump over the promenade wall and fish on top of the large blocks which form the sea defences. There are some big holes in between the blocks so take care not to fall in them, and beware of big waves breaking over the promenade. Although you don’t always have to cast far it can be a big advantage to do so just to clear any heavy white water and fish just behind the breakers which will give you a better chance of holding the bottom. The bottom is all sand so snags are rare and you will need a grip lead at all times. With distance casting in mind, a big black lug and rag cocktail tipped with white worm or razor clam on at least a 3/0 hook pennel rig clipped down should be the norm. Crab will also take codling between September and November but lots of weed can be a problem early in the season. Landing a fish from the front of the blocks can be difficult in rough seas so it will be an advantage to have someone with you, both to land fish and for safety reasons. The summer months are very quiet although a good south easterly sea will see the odd bass taken, some big plaice have been taken from here in the past, and mackerel can be taken in good numbers during August on a heavy spinner cast well out past any surf.

The Ferry Steps

To get here take the main lower road, Northgate, onto the headland past the Friarage tackle shop and turn right to go around the back of the fish quay site towards the main quay entrance. You can park on a small area of paving to the left of the main gates or at the side of the road which follows the dock channel and old town wall back towards the Pilot Pier.

The ferry steps are at the mouth of the dock entrance on the Hartlepool headland, and are very sheltered in all but the most severe weather. This a good summer mark for big eels with specimens to 3lb or more likely. They usually start to show around mid may and stay until October. Plenty of club matches and open comps have been won from here with a big bag of eels. Mackerel also move into the dock channel during August and can stay in the docks until October. They can be taken on float tackle and lures. Flounders, blennies, small whiting and pouting are also present during the summer months. Crab is usually the best bait but ragworm will also take plenty of fish and can often out fish the crab. Best fished over high water and a few hours of the ebb the water is very deep and a 40 yd cast will put you into the main channel. The bottom is muddy with a few snags but you can easily use multi hook rigs. Light tackle is the best way to fish for the summer eels with a bass rod and small multiplier, or carp rod and fixed spool reel loaded with 12lb line and a 1oz lead which is then allowed to move over the bottom in the slight tide pull. A 3oz lead should be the heaviest that you need but you might need to go a bit heavier during very big high tides when the tide is a bit stronger, or switch to a grip lead. Sport can be excellent on light gear and the eel bites can be very hard and will pull the rod tip right over. If you start missing bites leave your reel in free spool and allow any fish a bit longer to take the bait and move off with it before striking.

During heavy winter seas codling and whiting will move right up the channel and codling to 6lb are easily possible. Fresh or frozen crab and black lugworm cocktails will take the codling, and tipping a worm bait with mackerel or squid will take the whiting when there is a lot of them present.

The Folly / Wreck Hole

Access is via the promenade and Marine Drive, you can park safely on the road side and walk down the ramp onto the rocks which is about midway along the promenade.

The Folly and Wreck hole are basically the same mark as one leads into the other as the tide ebbs. The Folly is a large rock filled hole with the Wreck Hole at the end of a rock scar on the right hand side. You can fish the Folly from almost high tide back and then move onto the Wreck Hole as the Folly empties. Big ebbs will see it empty altogether, whereas smaller ebbs usually see enough water remaining to fish it all the time. It does not appear to be a particularly big hole to look at but it produces some big bags of codling every winter. Any time between September and May will see codling present here when there is plenty of colour in the water and there is a nice moderate swell at the back end of a falling sea. Even calm conditions will usually see at least the odd fish landed during a night time session.

The Folly is not too heavy but you will lose some gear, and the Wreck Hole is extremely tackle hungry. A good stiff rod such as a Conoflex Nemesis and an ABU 7000 type reel are needed to fish here. There is no need to cast too far and 35lb line all the way through with a 25lb hook length as part of a rotten bottom rig will be suitable. Use at least a strong 3/0 hook pattern as you will need to bully any fish out of the kelp at the Wreck Hole. A daylight session will produce fish, but a night session is the best time to fish here. Codling average a good 3lb to 4lb, with fish up to 8lb taken most winters, and the occasional double figure specimen can be expected. A big crab and mussel cocktail will take codling, coalfish, and eels up till about early November. Frozen crab and black lug will take fish after this, but most fish will be happy to take a big lug and rag cocktail. April and May will see any fish looking for crab baits again. The summer months will see small codling, coalfish, and eels showing, and there is always the chance of a bigger codling from the kelp beds in front of the Wreck Hole.

Most boats will loan you a rod and reel for the day. And I wouldn't go too soon either. I'd wait till at least mid may.

Mid may and that's if your lucky this year. Unless you find clear water. Then could be cod on.

We had quite a good day today Chris the weather was spot on? I kept 5 cod biggest 8lb. I know what you mean about mackerel we struggled to find any in great numbers but got enough for bait.

The Third Earl

The Third Earl

Our last trip from Hartlepool was two weeks ago, between 8 anglers we had well over 100 cod , probably more like 150 nothing big, probably 6 lbs or so being the biggest , most in the 3- 4 lbs bracket. Taken on a mixture of shads, and baited hokkais or muppets. I had 30 takers myself , taken on mackerel baited muppets and shads. On top of that we were lucky and before we really started , we covered a shoal of really big mackies, in ten mins we had enough for bait for the day and also enough to take plenty for the pot. It was a good days fishing . Biggest cod of the day taken on baited hokkais , bait was pink shell on prawns. But. A friend who is a good angler, who was on the above trip went on the same boat 4 days later with his lad, what a different story, same number of anglers aboard , but the catch rate was well, down, he and his lad only had 6 ling, and mackies were hard to find, a few undersize cod taken but that was all, lean pickings really after a red letter day on the previous trip. Just shows what a difference a few days can make. Failure is not always down to a lack of skill, it can equally be that the fish just arent feeding. Dave
