How to Sync Safari Bookmarks with Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer

If you use Safari on a Mac or on an iPad but also use Windows , you can make life a little easier by keeping your Safari bookmarks synced with your Windows browser. Here's how to sync your bookmarks across devices between Safari and Chrome , Firefox, and Internet Explorer.

The key to this bookmarks syncing is the iCloud app, built into OS X and iOS and available for Windows.

Enable Bookmark Synchronization on a Mac

First we'll make sure that you have iCloud syncing turned on for Safari in OS X.

1. Open the System Preferences app.

2. Click iCloud.

3. Check the box for Safari if it isn't already checked. If it already is checked, you're done!

4. Click OK to confirm you want to merge your Safari bookmarks and Reading List with iCloud.

Enable Bookmark Synchronization on an iPad

The process is similar for enabling bookmark syncing on iOS.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap iCloud.

3. Toggle the Safari option on if it isn't already on.

Enable Bookmark Synchronization in Windows

On your Windows PC, you'll need to download and set up iCloud to sync your bookmarks with your Apple devices.

1. Download iCloud for Windows from Apple's site ..

2. Install iCloud using the installation wizard. You'll be prompted to restart the computer to complete the installation.

3. Open the iCloud app. You can do this from the Start menu.

4. Sign in with your Apple ID .

5. Click the Options button next to Bookmarks.

6. Select the browsers you want to sync bookmarks with Safari.

7. Click OK.

8. Click Apply to finish setting up synchronization.

With the steps above completed, whenever you add or remove bookmarks on one device, they'll be synced to your other devices and selected browsers. Note that iCloud won't, however, sync between Safari and Firefox or Chrome on the Mac.

How to sync bookmarks between Firefox, Chrome, and Safari on multiple computers?

There are some similar question on bookmark syncing, but most answers point to Delicious or Google bookmarks. However, as Chrome doesn't have the Google toolbar, how would those sync? I use several computers and different browsers on them so I would like a easy solution to keep all of the bookmarks in sync on various computers and browsers in the same organizational structure throughout.

Also, I would prefer to have my bookmarks only synced to my account, not necessarily visible to the whole world as on Delicious. Is there any service that could handle this?

Xmarks (formerly FoxMarks) could solve your problem. It can synchronize (privately) bookmarks from Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer.

Chrome does have an extension for Xmarks (formerly FoxMarks) now. I just installed it today, and it works beautifully. I had already had an account set up through both Internet Explorer and Firefox, but I recently had switched to Chrome. I was not looking forward to having to find another online synchronization program.

For 2012, XMarks came back from the grave as part of LastPass. It supports 4 of 5 major browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) but lacks Opera. It's not clear whether this is due to Opera API issues, but there is a little discussion in their forums. Looks like it's free, but you have to subscribe for use with mobile devices/tablets (iDevice, Android, etc.) and a few other features. This is the same strategy used by LastPass. (Disclaimer: premium user of both)

Google Bookmarks may be an option depending on your browser choice and plugin availability. Google Chrome Sync (and possibly plugins for other browsers) may also work; for Firefox I believe it's tied in with the Google Toolbar for Firefox but YMMV by browser.

Delicious may be an option; I used to be a user but have mostly stopped after the headaches with their switchover (I switched to XMarks). I think they were trying to go in a more "social" direction like Digg, et al.

Pinboard is a commercial service (one-time fee) that apparently also uses the Delicious API, so some addons/widgets may be able to work with it instead of with Delicious. Long-term support of those may be questionable if Delicious doesn't still support that API.

UPDATE: For XMarks, I'm not sure what their plans are for IE10, but I'd expect them to only support the Desktop version of IE - there's apparently also a "Metro" version that will not allow any plugins.

It is now 2012, and Xmarks is still the best solution. Bought by LastPass , its existence and continuing free status are not any more in doubt.

It now fully supports Firefox 3+, Internet Explorer 7-9, Safari 4-5 and Chrome, all available from its download page .

Downside: doesn't sync between computers/online. Though you could have Firefox sync with the Google Toolbar and have your other browsers sync with Firefox.

Firefox 3.5 now has weave which is nice, but only for Firefox.

The main thing I like most is that you can run your own weave server.

Bypass the problem: create an HTML page of links, and make that the home page of each browser.

Since Firefox, Chrome and Opera (not sure about Safari) has their own sync services, it might be not a good idea for using third-party services. So you should use one of those for your primary synchronisation service and plugins for using this service in other browsers.

The article Ars examines Chrome and Firefox bookmark sync protocols is a good start for writing Firefox synchronisation or Chrome synchronisation plugins.

Unfortunately 'bypassing' the problem is not ideal for me in that I use the bookmark toolbar extensively, in fact I've organized all my favourites into multiple menus on that bar, a simple HTML file just doesn't cut it.

Here's my solution. Chrome will allow you to directly import bookmarks from Firefox if you delete all the bookmarks off of Chrome, and it will also automatically sort the aforementioned toolbar almost like it is in Firefox. This works reasonably well for me in that Firefox is my primary browser, and I only use Chrome occasionally. You'd think that Chrome would have the import button (not the HTML import) available all the time, and that it would check for duplicate entries when import, but oh well.

You can also try Diigo , which is similar to delicious, and lets you save your bookmarks and access them elsewhere with internet connection.

It has a toolbar for Firefox (at least) and for other browsers, or if you don't like toolbars, you can also use bookmarklets.

Nowdays, is my favorite way of saving bookmarks. I reallized it is unneficient to save about everything i like as a browser bookmark, because it also tends to slow down the browser. For me, it is better to now keep them in the cloud, and Diigo does that just fine (it is similar to Delicious but with some other features you may find useful).

5 Ways to Sync Bookmarks Across Browsers

While having several different web browsers installed is fine, it can become a problem. One of the biggest issues is each browser will have its own set of bookmarks (favorites). If you create or delete a bookmark in one browser, that change will not be reflected in the others. Many modern browsers do have a profile backup and sync option built in, but it’s only available between browsers of the same type. For instance, synced bookmarks in Chrome will only show in Chromium based browsers .

Of course, you can manually import or export bookmarks between browsers but it’s an inefficient solution that needs constant updating. This becomes even more difficult if you want to keep your bookmarks the same across different computers and operating systems as well as different browsers. The built-in browser sync will work if you have the same browser on each computer. However, it won’t if you use Chrome on one and Firefox, IE or Safari on another, for example.

Here we have five solutions that enable you to have the same bookmarks across different browsers and also different computers. This helps to keep your bookmarks more organized and available whatever computer you are on. 1. Xmarks

Xmarks used to be called Foxmarks and is these days owned by the popular online password manager LastPass . It supports four major browsers; Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Mac OS X Safari. While that’s not a huge list, it may be enough for your needs. Extra support for mobile devices is found in the paid Premium version. A couple of other Xmarks features are the ability to sync opened browser tabs, show site information and history across your browsers (Firefox only).

A useful option when you signup for an Xmarks account is you can use LastPass account details to sign in. If you don’t use LastPass, create a new account through the website or the extension. After logging into the extension via the wizard, Xmarks will offer to merge the bookmarks in your browser with any stored on the server. The sync option can be changed to overwrite the current bookmarks from the server and overwrite the bookmarks on the server with those in the browser.

From the extension icon, you can manual sync, open the remote tabs window or go to the myXmarks page online. Firefox has extra entries to update favicons and show website info. Inside the extension settings window, you can change the sync settings, change bookmark profiles, alter the encryption level and repair, upload or download bookmarks. Firefox users have additional options to restore previous bookmark sets, enable/disable site info/tags/history or use your own server.

The online myXmarks page is viewable in any browser where bookmarks in the library can be added to, deleted or edited. It’s also possible to share bookmarks with other users, remove duplicates, restore old bookmarks, sync profiles, import from Delicious and export to HTML file.

2. EverSync

EverSync is a multi-platform bookmark syncing service that works in several different scenarios. You will need to use a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer or a smartphone app for Android, iOS or Windows Phone for the service to work. It is still possible to view or edit synced bookmarks in a web page from a non-supported browser like Edge, but they cannot be merged or downloaded into the browser’s own bookmarking system.

Go to the EverHelper website and sign up for a free account, then visit the download page to install the appropriate extension or app. The browser extensions look different but behave the same. For the first sync, you have to select the initial action. Either merge the current browser bookmarks with those on the server, overwrite the server bookmarks with those from the browser or download and overwrite the browser bookmarks with the bookmarks on the server.

The default option is to sync the bookmarks every 30 minutes although you can manually sync at any time via the extension. Going to your account page shows the bookmarks currently synced where you can manually organize, edit or add new bookmarks. The tools button has some useful options to find duplicate bookmarks, find empty folders or import/export .HTML bookmark files. All bookmarks are backed up during certain actions (like initial sync) and can be restored at any time.

3. Google Bookmarks

The Google Bookmarks feature is relatively unknown compared to most of Google’s other online services. In fact, it’s been available for over a decade but has never been that well advertised or supported. While it’s a more basic bookmark syncing service than the others here, you are quite likely to already have a Google account so can start using Bookmarks straight away. Google Bookmarks is not related to the syncing options in Chrome and is a separate service.

After creating or logging into your Google account, simply visit the Google Bookmarks page. There are two ways to add a bookmark; press the “Add bookmark” link on the left or drop the gray “Google Bookmark” bookmarklet onto the browser bookmarks/favorites bar. A window will pop up to enter the name, URL, label, and an optional note. Using the bookmarklet will automatically enter the name and URL for the website in the current browser tab. Click the blue add button when you’re finished.

On the page, bookmarks can be sorted by date, label or title while the labels can be selected on the left to show only bookmarks with the same label. There are a number of Chrome and Firefox extensions to view the bookmarks, add individual entries to Google Bookmarks or sync between server and browser. Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer also uses the same bookmarking system.

A drawback with Google Bookmarks is there’s no import option to add several bookmarks at once. A few workarounds include importing Internet Explorer favorites via Google toolbar or using the Fess Firefox extension which has an import/export feature. Oddly, we didn’t come across an extension to import to Google Bookmarks from Chrome.

4. Raindrop.io

Raindrop is very much like XMarks and EverSync in terms of a full bookmark syncing system. The number of supported browsers and systems here is more impressive with extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera, apps for iOS and Android, and desktop applications for Windows and Mac. Your personal online page at Raindrop is very similar to what you get in the extensions/apps and can be used if your browser or OS is not supported.

You have the opportunity of signing up for a free account either direct from the Raindrop website or after installing the desktop application/browser extension. Only a name, email and password is required. After signing in the option will be available to import bookmarks into Raindrop if you don’t have any already. Pocket and HTML files are supported among others. All the bookmarks will then be available from the extension icon or desktop app.

Simply visit a website, click on the extension and press the Add Bookmark button or browse through your current bookmarks and click the entries to visit. The list can be changed visually between text based or image based. You can also edit each bookmark entry, favorite a bookmark, bookmark images as well as URLs, drag and drop onto the extension window, and share your bookmark collections with others. A paid Pro upgrade is available with extra features like cloud backup.

Atavi is a little different to the other services here. It’s mainly because Atavi is not so much a bookmark sync service as opposed to showing your bookmarks on a dedicated start/home page. As this can be used on any system or browser, it has a similar effect to a full syncing service. There are many comparable options available that do the same thing, Atavi is useful as it concentrates on bookmarks only which makes it closer to traditional syncing.

Firstly, go to the Atavi website and sign up for a free account. Once registered, your page will look like a speed dial from Opera or Vivaldi. To add a bookmark, click the + button and enter the URL, name and optional group. For importing bookmarks from another browser or HTML file, open the menu and click the Import button. You have the option of installing a Chrome, Opera or Firefox extension to help with the import from that particular browser, or just browse for and upload a file.

The menu allows changing the bookmarks from thumbnails to text. There are also options to change the search engine in the search bar (Bing, Google, Yahoo or Yandex), sort bookmarks into groups, export bookmarks, install the bookmark manager extension, change the page theme or change the language. While you cannot create folder structures with Atavi, the editable groups showing across the bottom of the window should go some way to help organize your bookmarks more efficiently.

Iv got an Xmarks account diigo & atvati iv never sin bookmark saves

xBrowserSync.org does EXACTLY what I want it to do! I turn on sync on 2 browsers, and their bookmark-bar, that I have visible becomes identical. I drop some bookmarks into my folders… and after it does a sync, they appear on both sides. I dont have to click specific extensions to search for my bookmarks there. I CAN, it has a button on the browser where you can search, but it syncs my shortcut bar – that’s where I keep it all… Free – and no accounts to sign up for!

Apparently, xBrowserSync.org does NOT support Opera. I want to sync my bookmarks between Opera and Chrome. Anyone with any ideas?

Last time I checked it’s still operated and run from Norway so it has to adhere to Norwegian/European rules/laws. So there can be no phoning home to the Chinese authorities or anything like that.

Of course, if you are basing your decision simply on the principle that it’s owned by the Chinese, that’s fine and up to you.

xBrowserSync.org — exactly what I was looking for. Well, almost. Problem: I started the syncinc process in Edge, then added Chrome. Unfortunately, my chrome favicons disappear after every sync. :-( Is there an easy way to fix it?

Their service api.xbrowsersync.org has a tendency to go down and the independently run services always seem to be down. This doesn’t speak well for them. Hence, you get what you paid which is nothing.

This would be perfect for what I need, except it’s only for Android! I use Mac OS and IOS and want to sync between Firefox and Safari. Is there a similar service for Apple products?

Maybe you should update your sync review as it is outdated … Xmarks? This tool is somewhere buried behind the church. Since quite a few years… But there is another new tool. I think featured 2019. Just about to DL it now and try if that is something we’ll use for the future. It’s late (2019) and we were waiting and waiting months and years until some clever developer comes up with a ultimate sync solution… It look quite awesome from outside this xBrowserSync solution… xbrowsersync.org I pray it is the ultimate tool letting us awestruck sync our bookmarks and files and feeling like a satori monk shortly before he reaches the next level of an enlightenment step. Secure, totally free and satisfied about this great year in the 21. century…..

I’ve also been looking for a solution. Recently tried Tabs Folders, but I’m not sold yet. They are also dropping Firefox support according to an email I received from support. Any other suggestions?

I had tried Xmarks before the shutdown date, last year or previously. It messed up my bookmarks so royally I have never recovered! I am glad they are gone! So no one else has to suffer like I did. I have NEVER RECOVERED from their mess.

I am a researcher, a serious researcher, and it really hurts. Others had glowing reviews of them so I went installed it. Stupid me for listening to others!!!!

If you are a ‘researcher’ you should know the importance of backing things up before trying.

Yeah, I highly suspect you did something wrong. Xmarks was a wonderful product and I miss it a lot. Frankly the need to have synced bookmarks is the only reason I stick with Chrome. I keep wanting to leave for other browsers but the bookmark sync keeps me staying. I wish there was something I could use across browsers and not have to install anything. Hell, just a bunch of links is all I need. Sometimes I’m on different computers where I can’t install anything, so having access to my shortcuts is all I really need.

All other major browsers offer the same syncing that Chrome does. I switch between Firefox, Chrome, and Safari on a regular basis and my bookmarks are always kept up-to-date. The one downside is the bookmarks only sync for the corresponding browser. i.e. Chrome syncs Chrome bookmarks and Firefox syncs Firefox bookmarks etc. This is where a bookmark syncing solution across browsers would be nice.

Someone on another site raved about papaly.com. I’ve installed it but have yet to give it a good run. You might want to try it.

As one of many trying to find a solution with Xmarks shutting down, I tried EverSync, but it doesn’t support IE or Edge, which to me are essential for cross-browser syncing. It has an IE link on the page, but it doesn’t do anything and it looks like it’s many years obsolete (maybe it worked with IE6). For those who don’t know, Windows will do a fine job of keeping IE and Edge in sync, so if you can sync either one of those, you’ve got both. I posted several questions to EverSync/EverHelper/Nimbus asking about the IE sync, but no response. I finally ruled that out.

Basically the same experience with Raindrop.IO.

I found a few other suggestions, but nothing I found worked like Xmarks.

The best option I’ve found is actually RoboForm. It doesn’t actually overwrite the bookmarks/favorites in the browser, so still not as good as Xmarks, but it does give one-click access to its own internal “Bookmarks” tree. On the other hand, better than Xmarks, it fully and natively support Edge and, because it stores the bookmarks in its own tree structure, it seems much less likely to ever get corrupted than Xmarks, which did occasionally corrupt. Using it is about the equivalent of the tree structure you would use if you have more bookmarks than fit in the bar at the top of the screen in all the browsers. So this adds 1 click, but then is almost the same as native bookmark syncing.

RoboForm has a very simple bookmark import option from the browser and from an Xmarks bookmark export. It worked flawlessly for me.

The limits I’ve found so far with RoboForm, none of which are dealbreakers for me, are that you can’t manually override the alphabetical sorting and you can’t drag and drop bookmarks to move them without opening the Bookmark Edit window.

So far, I’m still using LastPass as my password manager, but I may shift to RoboForm for everything (it imports from LastPass too). I originally used LastPass because of Xmarks anyway. Since it’s their fault that Xmarks is going away, I do feel like taking my password business elsewhere and if RoboForm’s bookmarks keep working this well, I’m happy to give them my password business too.

Last thing, RoboForm seemed to start me out in a trial. I’m not sure if I need the paid version or could get by with free, but I think it may require the paid version for the cloud syncing, which would be necessary for cross-platform bookmark syncing. But I can’t tell if that’s currently working because it works with the free version or if it’s just because I’m a full-featured 30-day trial. Single user paid version is $19.99.

I still can’t find other alternatives of xmarks with the features that xmarks have. I simply want to use the browser bookmark buttons and xmarks like plugin that do the sync between all the browsers as well as on the cloud.

I’m searching for a bookmark synch that is compatible with the Palemoon browser. If someone can help me to find an alternative to Xmarks whom is shutting down May 1st, 2018.

Also came here to find replacement for wonderful Xmarks

Because I was trying to fix my XMarks (which has dumped all my bookmarks more than once in the past couple of years) I had to go to the Xmarks website. I had looked for alternatives before but always came back to Xmarks. Now I have no choice but to find something else.

I have received no notifications via email or otherwise but this is what it said tonight (3-30-18) when I went over to the Xmarks website:

“LogMeIn is retiring Xmarks from its line of products as of May 1, 2018. After this date, you will no longer have access to Xmarks.”

So hopefully, I’ll like one of these and it will actually work across all of my browsers.

Xmarks will be shutdown on May 1st 2018. LastPass f-up Xmarks with Mozilla’s transition to Firefox Webextensions and never recovered from that mess. It was the best bookmarks sync extension between FF, Chrome and IE.

Just got email that Xmarks will be going away as of May 1, 1028. Guess it’s time to uninstall and look at other options. Do any of the others mentioned work for Edge as well?

Turns out that XMarks is discontinuing their service. So someone will have to remove them from the list. They say the system will stop May 1st, 2018.

Is there anyway to sync Mac Safari bookmarks with Samsung Browser on phone?

I Think best one is using iCloud account if have one, or can create. Here I am talking about Windows Desktop PCs, sharing my own addiction of bookmarks sync. I can’t stick with same browser hence need same thing in all browser I use. Currently Internet Explorer, Edge, Chrome & Firefox and Safari in macbook. using iCloud I managed to get samething everywhere. It is simple, install iCloud and select settings for bookmarks sync. This is way better than those add-ons suggested.

Do you mean you can keep Safari bookmarks in sync with other browsers by iCloud? I use Safari primarily on Mac but I prefer Samsung browser on my phone so I want to keep them in sync. any suggestion?

Hi DX500, I have never used Samsung browser but what I guess, fundamentally it is not possible straightforward but if you use samsung browser extensions for safari or chrome than there is chance or similar way. If you want to know how I did, here is detail. It may seems funny or even crazy idea. Possibly how I did may give you some hints.

I use safari in Mac and my iPhone. I have iCloud installed in Windows 10 PC, which I use for my heavy duty work. iCloud can automatically sync bookmarks among IE, Chrome & Firefox (all require icloud extensions) and I did one more crazy thing of Edge

I dont use Interent Explorer but use Edge for some works. so I use gpedit.msc to config syncronize bookmarks between IE and Edge. I am using it for couple months without any issues.

Spent more than 2 hours reorganizing my bookmarks,because Xmarks doubled them all – very disappointing because I used it for years, but now I uninstalled it

Wow. Xmarks is now terrible!

I have used it for years with nary an issue; it worked silently and flawlessly in the background. But that all changed with FF Quantum (version 57) and how it implemented extensions. Xmarks was slow to update and when it did, the service was hit or miss. Yesterday was the final straw with all of my bookmarks being quadrupled across all my browsers (that’s when I wasn’t nagged with Xmarks login error screens). I finally uninstalled Xmarks.

And that is why I’m here now looking for alternatives. :)

In case anyone didn’t realize – LastPass just announced that Xmarks is going away a/o 01 May 2018. So, don’t bother – even though I’ve had limited issues with it (just with FireFox), it worked pretty well for me. Now, onward to a new sync tool!

Lastpass took over Xmarks some time ago, and have only been maintaining it, not improving it. As of May 1, 2018, Lastpass is dropping Xmarks completely. So…pick something else.

XMarks is absolute broken beyond repair across all browsers. Use it and you will lose a random number of your long cherished bookmarks. Use XMarks at your own risk. DEFINITELY back up your bookmarks before trying XMarks of you are tempted. Prepare for disappointment.

I use Xmarks and I just received an email that they will cease all operation on May 1. Am so sorry to see them go as i have used them for years. Will now have to use sync with Firefox.

I store all my bookmarks on a private cloud based start page start.me. This way I do not have to sync my bookmarks.

I rate XMARKS. I’ve been using it for a long time now, since before it nearly folded. (horrors!). Great & simple for updating across the computers I use. Good range of settings. I also find the immediate synchronization useful.

I’ve been using Webmarks now since when XP first came out. Its offline database though however I always preferred the layout and look of it. It might not even be available for download anymore since its an old product.

One thing left to synch it’s been bugging me for several years now, The firefox addon called “scrapbook”

You see, I have 5 different firefoxes and 5 different palemoons even my SRWare Iron has a scrapbook plugin which I will ignore for the moment, but the heart of the matter is the giant scrapbook data directories of each of these firefox/palemoons, and to make it more tricky any solution needs to take in consideration that both a firefox and palemoon can run at the same time and therefore “lock” their default data directory and in the end we want to have a backup of all data in one spot which is now up in the Gigabyte range of size. The situation is basically like this because I frankly haven’t come up with a solution yet. This is also a mixed bag of installed and portable so there are files all over the drive.

It’s possible to grind them all down into one but takes hours and a lot of paying attention to the source and destination, and it’s probably fragmenting the hell out of the disks while all that goes on. If it was a straight copy operation it wouldn’t get 50MB / sec (like a 1Gig movie file) because of all the thousands of piddly little files, it grinds it down the disk speed to a couple k/ sec . Clearly time is also a consideration which is tied to technique. Something is wrong when it takes you all night to merge import export databases while falling asleep on the keyboard playing sol. I don’t mind an hour, maybe two hours. But to have it drone on hours and hours and then at the end has a list of stuff that didn’t make it isn’t my idea of confidence nor efficiency.

Yeah, XMARKS has been around for longer, maybe 4 or 5 years. But with another name because at first it was only a FIREFOX plugin. Then they almost close the service (couldnt figure it out how to make some money from the data) Luckily some investors came around and still is the best damn thing I know to keep my work PC, home PC and smartphone in sync

First, you want to open the iCloud app and look to where it says "Bookmarks". Click the "Options..." button to get started.

Also, if you end up syncing all three browsers to Safari, you might end up with kind of a mess. It's best to use your favorite browser of the three to sync your bookmarks so you don't end up with a bunch of disorganized duplicates.

For example, if you imported your bookmarks into Safari manually from Chrome at one time or another, and you continually updated your Chrome bookmarks, then your Safari bookmarks may be out-of-date. In such a case, your bookmarks will be merged and you'll wind up with outdated bookmarks in Chrome.

Therefore, before you start syncing your bookmarks, you might want to clear out your bookmarks from one browser or another. In other words, if your Safari bookmarks are the ones that are up-to-date, then you'll want to sync those to Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer. On the other hand, if your Chrome bookmarks are most recent, then you'd want to sync those instead.

Check the System Status page to see if there are known issues affecting iCloud Bookmarks, since your device might not be the cause of your issue.

Make sure your date and time settings on your iOS device or Mac are correct. You can easily fix issues caused by incorrect date and time settings by entering the right information.

To help make sure that you don't lose important information, make copies of your Bookmarks .

If your bookmarks don't display in the same order across all of your devices, check how many bookmarks are in the folder. If the folder contains more than 500 bookmarks, the order of bookmarks might not be the same on all devices.

If you need to access a bookmark that you deleted within the last 30 days, you can recover it from iCloud.com . Click Settings, and under Advanced, click Restore Bookmarks.

Open Safari and go to www.apple.com . If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud Bookmarks and Reading List* won't update in the Safari app. Get help with your Internet connection .

Open a secure website from your iOS device to see if you can access ports 80 and 443. Safari requires access to port 443 to push updates between iCloud and your devices.

* Reading List is only supported on iOS and macOS devices.

Check your account details

Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID that you're using on your other supported devices. Tap Settings > [your name].

Restart Safari

Close and restart the Safari app on your iOS device. If you're not sure know how to close Safari, follow these steps .

Turn off iCloud Bookmarks and turn it back on

Tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud.

Turn off Safari.

You can choose Delete from My [device] if your data exists on one or more of your computers. Otherwise, choose Keep on My [device].

Wait a few minutes, then turn on Safari again.

Restart your device

Restart your device. If you're not sure how to do this, follow these steps.

Turn on iCloud Bookmarks and upgrade your software

Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences. If you're using macOS Catalina, click Apple ID. Click iCloud, then select Safari.

Quit Safari, then re-open Safari.

Try to go to www.apple.com in Safari. If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud Bookmarks and Reading List won't update in the Safari app. Get help with your Internet connection .

Open a secure website from your Mac to see if you can access ports 80 and 443. Safari requires access to port 443 to push updates between iCloud and your devices.

Choose Apple menu , and click iCloud. Make sure that you're signed in with the same Apple ID that you're using on your other supported devices.

Quit Safari.

Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences. If you're using macOS Catalina, click Apple ID. Click iCloud.

Deselect Safari.

Close System Preferences and wait about a minute.

Open System Preferences and click iCloud.

Select Safari.

Open Safari.

Restart your computer

Restart your computer and see if the issue still exists.

Make sure that your PC and your browser meet the iCloud system requirements .

Try to go to www.apple.com . If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud Bookmarks won't update. Get help with your Internet connection .

Open a secure website to see if you can access ports 80 and 443. Safari and Internet Explorer require access to port 443 to push updates between iCloud and your devices.

Close and reopen iCloud for Windows

If you install a browser when iCloud for Windows is open, you need to quit and reopen iCloud for Windows. Then the new browser appears in the Bookmarks Options list in iCloud for Windows preferences.

Check your settings

Open iCloud for Windows and make sure that you're signed in with the same Apple ID that you're using on your other supported devices.

Refresh your browser

Sometimes recent changes you make in your web browser might not update on your other devices (or the reverse might happen). Quit and reopen your web browser to refresh your changes.

Bookmarks in Google Chrome might not update as quickly as in Internet Explorer* or Firefox.

*If you use iCloud for Windows 10 or later in Internet Explorer, your bookmarks might appear out of order.

Check your bookmarks in another browser

If you can't use iCloud Bookmarks with one browser, try using them with a different browser.

Microsoft Edge browser in Windows 10 doesn’t support iCloud Bookmarks. If you want to use iCloud Bookmarks in Windows 10, use a supported browser, like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer. Learn more about the system requirements for iCloud .

For example, if you typically use Internet Explorer, try using Firefox. If you only experience the issue in a particular browser, follow the browser-specific steps in this section. If the issue affects more than one browser, check for issues with your computer and network settings and connections.

Check the location of your Internet Explorer Favorites folder

If you changed the location where you save your Internet Explorer Favorites (bookmarks), your Favorites won't automatically update on your other devices. To fix this issue:

Open iCloud for Windows .

Deselect Bookmarks and click Apply.

Change the location of your favorites folder back to the default location (usually C:\Users\username\Favorites).

Return to iCloud for Windows, select Bookmarks and click Apply.

Put Internet Explorer 10 or Google Chrome in Desktop mode

To make Desktop mode the default in Internet Explorer 10:

Open Internet Explorer.

Click Tools > Internet Options, then click the Programs tab.

Select Always in Internet Explorer on the Desktop. Click OK.

Check the Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop checkbox. Click OK.

To make Desktop mode the default in Google Chrome:

Open Chrome.

Click Chrome, then select Relaunch Chrome on the desktop.

If you see an option called Relaunch Chrome in Windows 8 mode, you're already running in desktop mode by default.

Activate the iCloud Bookmark extension or add-on in Google Chrome or Firefox

Google Chrome:

Click the Chrome menu in the upper-right corner, then choose More tools > Extensions.

Select the Enable checkbox next to iCloud Bookmarks.

Open Firefox

Click the Firefox menu in the upper-right corner, then choose Add-ons.

Click Extensions.

Click Enable next to iCloud Bookmarks.

Close your browser.

Deselect the Bookmarks checkbox and click Apply.

Wait a few seconds, select Bookmarks and click Apply.

Open your browser.

After you restart your computer, see if the issue still exists.

Stop automatic bookmark updates in Google Chrome or Firefox

To stop automatically updating bookmarks in Google Chrome or Firefox, disable the iCloud extension or browser add-on:

Click Options next to Bookmarks.

Deselect the Chrome or Firefox checkbox. Click OK.

Click Apply, then click Remove.

If you turned off Chrome in iCloud for Windows, the Extensions tab will open in Chrome. To disable the extension, deselect the Enable checkbox next to the iCloud Bookmarks extension, or click the trash icon to remove the extension.

If you turned off Firefox in iCloud for Windows, the Firefox Add-ons Manager will open. Click Disable next to the iCloud Bookmarks add-on to disable the add-on, or click Remove to remove the add-on.

How to sync all your browser bookmarks with xBrowserSync

Google Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge all offer their own built-in tools to synchronize your bookmarks across different computers. But these tools work only within each specific browser. If you use all three browsers, you need a way to keep your bookmarks in sync among all of them. For that task, you can turn to a free utility called xBrowserSync.

By installing the xBrowserSync extension, your bookmarks are synchronized among the different browsers on all your systems. Make a change in one browser and on one system, and it propagates to the other browsers on your other systems.

The program works in both Windows and macOS but only with Chrome, Firefox and Edge; no support for Safari. On the mobile front, XBrowserSync is available as an app for Android but not for iOS / iPadOS . The Android app displays a list of all your bookmarks. Clicking on any bookmark opens the site in your default browser. Here’s how it works.

How to install xBrowserSync in Google Chrome

Let’s start with Google Chrome. First, make sure that the bookmarks in Chrome are organized and arranged the way you want. Remove any bookmarks you no longer need. Move stray bookmarks into folders if necessary. Second, you’ll need to disable Google’s own bookmark synchronization if you’ve enabled it because Google’s sync process can conflict with that of xBrowserSync.

Open the XBrowserSync website where you can read about the product. When you’re ready, click the Download button and then click the button for Chrome Store. At the xBrowserSync Chrome Store page, click the button to Add to Chrome. Select the button to Add Extension.

After the installation has finished, click the Extensions icon at the top and click on the pin icon to see xBrowserSync on the toolbar. Then click its toolbar icon to kick off the setup process. At the first window, click Continue ( Figure A ).

xBrowserSync asks for permission to read and change data on the websites you visit. Click Allow. Click the toolbar icon again to continue the setup. Click Next for each screen that appears. At the final screen, click the Got It link. At the next screen, you’ll need to create an encryption password to protect and secure your bookmarks. As usual, you’ll want to cook up a password that’s complex and secure but not difficult to remember. Enter the password and click Next ( Figure B ).

Type the password again to confirm it and then click Sync. Answer yes when the program tells you it will delete all local bookmarks before restoring synced bookmarks. xBrowserSync syncs your local bookmarks.

Now, you want to be able to access your synchronized bookmarks. The easiest way is to display the bookmarks toolbar. In Chrome, go to Settings, scroll down the screen and turn on the switch for Show bookmarks bar. At the bookmarks toolbar, click the button for Other bookmarks and hover over the entry for [xbs Menu]. You’ll then see the folders and icons for all your bookmarks ( Figure C ).

How to sync bookmarks from xBrowserSync in Microsoft Edge

Next, let’s segue to Edge, specifically the Chromium version of Edge as Microsoft no longer supports the legacy edition. First, make sure you disable Edge’s own internal favorites synchronization if already enabled. There is no xBrowserSync extension for Edge in the Microsoft Store. But since the browser supports Chrome extensions, you can pick up it up at the Chrome Web Store. Go directly to the Chrome store page for xBrowserSync . The first time you do this, you’ll have to click the button at the top for Allow extensions from other stores. Then follow the same steps to install the extension in Edge as you did for Chrome.

After the installation, click the xBrowserSync toolbar icon in Edge and go through the setup screens. But when you get to the screen that prompts you to enter an encryption password, click the link for Already Got a Sync ID ( Figure D ).

The next screen asks you to enter your Sync ID. You can find that easily enough. Go back to Chrome and click the xBrowserSync toolbar icon. Click the Settings icon. Then click the string for Sync ID. (Don’t worry, you won’t have to type that string) ( Figure E ).

The next screen displays a QR code you can use with the xBrowserSync Android app. More easily, though, just copy and paste the ID. Click the button to Copy Sync ID to Clipboard ( Figure F ).

Return to Edge and paste the string in the Sync ID field. Type the password you previously created. Then click the Sync button ( Figure G ). Your bookmarks in Edge are synced with your bookmarks from Chrome via xBrowserSync.

Accessing your synced bookmarks in Edge works the same as in Chrome. Go to Settings and select the category for Appearance. Click the dropdown menu for the setting for Show Favorites Bar and set it to Always. On the Favorites toolbar, click the button for Other Favorites, hover over the entry for [xbs Menu] to see the folders and icons for all your bookmarks ( Figure H ).

How to sync bookmarks from xBrowserSync in Firefox

Finally, open Firefox and disable the browser’s internal bookmark syncing if you had previously activated it. Browse to the XBrowserSync page at the Firefox Browser Add-ons site. Click the button to Add to Firefox. Add the extension and then click OK. After installation, click the xBrowserSync toolbar icon. The process is then the same as it was for Microsoft Edge. Follow each screen.

At the screen that prompts you to enter an encryption password, click the link for Already Got a Sync ID. At the screen that asks you to enter your Sync ID, copy and paste the Sync ID from the xBrowserSync settings screen in either Chrome or Edge and then enter your password. Click Sync ( Figure I ). Your bookmarks are then synced from xBrowserSync to Firefox.

Accessing your bookmarks is a bit easier in Firefox than in Chrome or Edge as you can add a Bookmarks icon directly to the toolbar. Click the hamburger icon for the Application Menu and select the setting for Customize Toolbar. Drag the icon for Bookmarks Menu onto the toolbar. Click that icon and you’ll see all your bookmarks ( Figure J ).

How to install xBrowserSync on an Android device

Download and install the xBrowserSync app from Google Play . The first time you open the app, tap Next to go through each of the initial setup screens. At the screen to Scan Your Sync ID, tap the button for Scan ID. On Chrome, Edge or Safari on your desktop PC, click the xBrowserSync toolbar icon, select the Settings icon, and then click the Sync ID string. Hover your Android device over the QR code to scan the ID. On your mobile device, enter your xBrowserSync password ( Figure K ).

Tap the bullet point icon in the xBrowserSync app and select the entry for Menu bookmarks. Tap a specific bookmark, and it opens in your default browser ( Figure L ).

How to organize and sync your bookmarks across browsers

If you use several browsers across your devices, you can sync your bookmarks for easy access to the sites and info you need most. Whether you’re using a home laptop or checking your smartphone on the road, you can keep all your bookmarks and favorites synced up and available right at your fingertips.

How to organize bookmarks within a browser

All modern browsers, like Microsoft Edge , feature a Bookmarks or Favorites Manager where you can add and delete links, create folders for similar bookmarks, and weed out duplicate or dead links.

To organize your favorites in Microsoft Edge, go to the three dots in the upper right corner and click on Favorites (you can also select Ctrl + Shift + Option on your keyboard). Here, you can create new folders and drag-and-drop existing links into new folders.

Nest folders inside each other and delete links. It works just like the folders on your computer desktop—which makes it all the easier to sort through your saved links.

Clean up outdated or expired URLs using a bookmark checker . That way, you can stay ahead of any potential duplicates, misplaced folders, or dead links.

Three ways to sync your bookmarks across browsers

Every major browser has their own ways of saving and loading bookmarks, but they all import bookmarks as HTML web pages. This makes it easy to save your bookmarks and import them into another browser. Here are three ways you can sync your bookmarks: 

1. Export and edit your bookmarks

You can export bookmarks as an HTML page which will list all of your favorites in lists and nested folders. In the Favorites menu in Microsoft Edge, select the three dots for More options and select Export favorites .

2. Automatically import bookmarks into Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge makes it easy to sync your bookmarks. Select the three dots in the top right . Then, select Settings to access the Profiles menu. Near the bottom, select Import browser data . Here, you can add bookmarks from any supported browsers that are already downloaded onto your device. You can even import saved data and passwords from other browsers into Microsoft Edge, so you won’t have to go through the hassle of resaving your information.

3. Use free software to sync your bookmarks

There are tools and Microsoft Edge add-ons that allow you to comprehensively sync and manage your bookmarks. Whether you’re importing from Microsoft Edge to another browser or merging across different devices, these advanced managers can allow you to get even more specific about what you choose to save.

Easily remove duplicate favorites

With Microsoft Edge, there’s no need to open every bookmark and scour your saved pages for duplicate links. Under the Favorites menu, select Remove duplicate links . Microsoft Edge will highlight any duplicate links across all of your synced devices, and you will have a chance to inspect them before they’re deleted.

since i can't get my firefox bookmarks to sync, my next option is to sync from safari-- is there a way to do this? PS-- has anyone else had problems with firefox not recognizing their email/ password login?

I have had a look into this and Firefox Sync does not work with Safari. If you want to import bookmark from Safari, you will need to:

In Safari, open the File menu and choose Export Bookmarks. Save bookmarks.html somewhere handy.
In Firefox, open the Bookmarks menu and choose Show All Bookmarks.
In the Library window, click the Import and Backup button and choose Import Bookmarks from HTML.

With regards to the Sync password issue, you wish to have a look at this guide .

I hate to disagree with you here about Sync not working with Safari. I have a new iPhone 7 with iOS 10 and all of a sudden my Firefox Bookmarks on the toolbars are the same as my Safari Bookmarks and I didn't do anything. When I deleted a bookmark on the task bar in Firefox and tapped Safari on the phone, the bookmarks I deleted on FF disappear from Safari. How do I stop this?

Don’t worry Apple users, we have you covered too. The iCloud Bookmarks tool for Firefox, Chrome, and Windows keeps your Safari bookmarks in sync. This is super handy when you use one browser for work and another for play.

The only catch with iCloud Bookmarks for Windows users is that you need to install the iCloud desktop app. But, the good news is that once you do that, you can sync photos, mail, calendar, and task items that you store in iCloud.
