18 and over

Brian Ellison has dreamed of training a Northumberland Plate winner ever since his father and uncle took him to the race they called the Pitmen’s Derby as a small boy.

The Malton trainer, who was born on Plate Day in 1952, grew up only 10 minutes from Gosforth Park and went agonisingly close to realising his ambition in 2016 when favourite Seymour was denied by the late surge of Godolphin’s Antiquarium.

“I thought I’d won it when he hit the front,” recalls Ellison. “Ben Curtis gave him a perfect ride but it wasn’t to be. It was tough to watch but I keep on trying.”

This year the leading dual-purpose trainer has two more chances to complete what would be a proud 2024 double after winning Newcastle’s big jumping handicap the Eider Chase with Anglers Crag back in February.

The classy Tashkhan , who was second to Trueshan in the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day a few years ago, and Tapeta regular Onesmoothoperator , both take their chance in Saturday’s marathon, live on Sky Sports Racing .

Ellison, who has been operating at a strike rate over 20 per cent, has a big team at Newcastle’s three-day festival, which gets underway on Thursday, but is keeping wraps on some talented young fillies who are being aimed at Pattern races later in the season.

Here, the Spring Cottage trainer discusses his key Flat performers exclusive Stable Tour with Simon Mapletoft of attheraces.com.

Watch the Northumberland Plate Festival from Newcastle live on Sky Sports Racing  (Sky 415 | Virgin 519) from Thursday 27th to Saturday 29th June.

Form profile

Churchill’s four-year-old stayer has been hinting that he’s ready for a greater test of stamina after doing much of his racing over 12f. He finished well to be second at Chester’s Boodles May Festival over that kind of trip. A dual winner at Newcastle, he’s set to return there this weekend.

Trainer says

I’m expecting him to get into the Northumberland Vase on Saturday, the consolation race for the Plate. He’s off 78 and needs to prove he stays 2m but he’s worth a try. The ground was too soft for him at York last time but he has a good record on the All-Weather.

Freddy Robinson (GB)

  • 5-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Adaay (IRE) - Bling Bling (IRE) (Indian Ridge (UK))
  • Next Race: Musselburgh, 27 Aug 2024 16:40
  • Form: 9-43122

brian ellison stable tour

Now a five-year-old, the versatile son of Adaay has done all his winning on turf but is still lightly raced on the All-Weather. He won a Class 6 handicap at Beverley earlier this month to supplement two wins over hurdles.

We’re very fond of this horse because he’s named after my grandson, who is much better behaved! His dad is my stable jockey Ben Robinson who was delighted to win on him for the first time at Beverley. We plan to step him up to 12.5f at Newcastle this weekend and hope for a good run off just a 3lb higher mark.

Gidwa (IRE)

  • Breeding: Ribchester (IRE) - Gheedaa (USA) (Tamayuz (UK))
  • Last Race: Thirsk, 24 Jun 2024 15:00
  • Result: 9/18, towards rear, pushed along 2f out, kept on inside final furlong, never nearer

brian ellison stable tour

Four times a winner, this five-year-old went close to obliging on his second start for the stable at Wolverhampton in early June. Previously trained by Kevin Philippart de Foy, he appears much better on synthetics, with a record of four from 25. He is 0-13 on turf.

Gidwa pulled a shoe off at Thirsk last time which is why he wasn’t able to build on the promise of his previous runs. He did nothing wrong at Wolverhampton when he was beaten a neck and seemed to stay the extended 7f at Beverley well enough after that. He’s back to 6f at Newcastle on Friday and should run well.

Onesmoothoperator (USA)

  • 6-y-o; brown gelding
  • Breeding: Dialed In (USA) - Sueno D'oro (USA) (Medaglia d'Oro (USA))
  • Next Race: York, 24 Aug 2024 15:35
  • Form: 642821

brian ellison stable tour

The winner of over £130,000 on the All-Weather, this six-year-old is generally reliable and consistent as he showed when finishing seconds to Good Friday Marathon champion Prydwen in a valuable handicap at Southwell in late April. The six-year-old is a dual winner at Newcastle, where he finished third in the Marathon Final two years ago and remains effective between 12f and 2m.

People call him unreliable but the type of races he runs in are hard to win, yet he’s usually thereabouts. He loves Newcastle but is a much better horse there when the Tapeta’s riding faster. He can run a big race in the Plate if the track performs the way he likes it.

Tashkhan (IRE)

  • 6-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Born To Sea (IRE) - Tarziyna (IRE) (Raven's Pass (USA))
  • Next Race: York, 23 Aug 2024 14:25
  • Form: 0133-05

brian ellison stable tour

Now a six-year-old, he hasn’t run since finishing a creditable third in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak in France in October in heavy ground. Third in the Cesarewitch before that and the winner of a valuable handicap at Chester, he is very much the flagbearer for Spring Cottage Stables but must have ease in the ground to give his best.

He’s a class horse but he needs soft ground and we just haven’t been able to get started with him. He was due to run in the Listed Further Flight at Nottingham in April but that was called off and it’s been too fast everywhere since. He didn’t get the rain he needed to take his chance in the Gold Cup but he’s fit and well and did a nice away day gallop at Tim Easterby’s the other day. He’ll take his chance in the Plate before we consider races like the Goodwood Cup, the Lonsdale at York and then France.

The Dancing Poet (GB)

  • 8-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Poet's Voice (UK) - Caldy Dancer (IRE) (Soviet Star (USA))
  • Last Race: Catterick, 19 Aug 2024 14:15
  • Result: 2/11, raced wide, close up, ridden to chase winner 2f out, stayed on one pace

brian ellison stable tour

An admirable veteran who has won two of his four starts this year, including in an amateur rider’s race at Catterick on 18th June. Nine times a winner, the eight-year-old has produced his best form at around 12f but stays further.

He’s eight now but holds his form well as he showed at Catterick the other day. That was his second win in three starts and I’m hoping for a big run up at Musselburgh on Thursday evening in another amateur riders’ race. Matt Brown gets on well with him and 1m5f looks ideal.

Tolstoy (IRE)

  • Breeding: Kingman (UK) - War And Peace (UK) (Frankel (UK))
  • Next Race: Newmarket, 28 Sep 2024 15:40
  • Form: 501116

brian ellison stable tour

This five-year-old has been in the form of his life this season, winning back-to-back 7f handicaps at York in June. A 6lb rise for his latest success may not be enough to stop him as he won an All-Weather handicap at Chelmsford City for John and Thady Gosden off 96 two years ago.

He’s a temperamental horse who winds himself up but he’s taken well to York. The 7f really suits him there and he definitely appreciates some give in the ground. I don’t want to break a winning formula so will head back to the Knavesmire with him.

Utilis (IRE)

  • Breeding: Profitable (IRE) - Mysterious Burg (FR) (Sageburg (IRE))
  • Last Race: Thirsk, 16 Aug 2024 20:15
  • Result: Won/11, off the pace towards rear, good headway out wide over 1f out, ran on under pressure inside final furlong, led final 100 yards, won going away

brian ellison stable tour

Yet to win in 14 starts, this four-year-old has shown clear signs of ability on several occasions including when second in a Class 4 handicap over 1m at Doncaster earlier this month. In fact, he’s been placed in six of his 14 starts and re-appears in a 1m handicap at Newcastle on Friday evening.

He fractured his pelvis last year and it’s taken a bit of time to get him back to the form we know he’s capable of. His Doncaster run was very encouraging and I’m hoping he can build on it at Newcastle on the straight mile now he seems to have found his confidence.

Three Year Olds

Habitual (gb).

  • 3-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Al Kazeem (UK) - Habita (IRE) (Montjeu (IRE))
  • Last Race: Pontefract, 28 Jul 2024 16:12
  • Result: 11/12, prominent, outpaced inside 3f out, soon lost position, weakened quickly final furlong

brian ellison stable tour

An Al Kazeem gelding out of a Montjeu mare, this three-year-old looked in need of the experience over 10f at Nottingham on his only start in May. Well related, he could step back in trip at Newcastle.

He’s a very raw horse who will need a few runs to get the hang of things and should be better come the back-end. He’ll want a trip in time but may run over the straight 7f at Newcastle this weekend.

Last Applause (IRE)

  • 3-y-o; bay filly
  • Breeding: Acclamation (UK) - Up At Last (UK) (Cape Cross (IRE))
  • Last Race: Catterick, 10 Jul 2024 17:30
  • Result: 3/8, handy, came stands side turning in, pushed along over 2f out, ridden and one pace from 1f out

brian ellison stable tour

This Acclamation filly made a bright start last year, finishing third on debut at Newcastle before winning a Catterick novice over 7f on easy ground. She heads back to the Tapeta for a 7f handicap on Thursday off a falling mark.

She’s ideally suited by 7f on quicker ground at 6f on soft, as she showed at Chester last month. She’s been dropped a few pounds since finishing second there which will help and I’ll be disappointed if she doesn’t add to her Catterick novice win.

Terrorise (GB)

  • Breeding: Territories (IRE) - Timely Words (UK) (Galileo (IRE))
  • Next Race: York, 24 Aug 2024 14:25
  • Form: 57-7154

brian ellison stable tour

Lightly raced for a three-year-old, this gelding got off the mark at the fifth attempt in a 10f Doncaster handicap in May, benefiting from the step up in trip on good to soft ground. He couldn’t repel better class horses at York last time but re-appears in a lower grade over the extended 12f at Newcastle on Thursday.

He’s out of a Galileo mare so was always going to enjoy a test of stamina. He did it well at Doncaster and I think he’ll have more to offer going further.

Tryfan (GB)

  • 3-y-o; bay colt
  • Breeding: Nathaniel (IRE) - Rhagori (UK) (Exceed and Excel (AUS))
  • Form: 3-52162

brian ellison stable tour

A promising colt who finished third in a 10f novice at Newcastle on debut and ran on to be second over 12f in the same grade at Thirsk last month. A son of Nathanial, he is entitled to progress this year and runs in the same Class 4 handicap as stablemate Terrorise at Newcastle on Thursday.

I think he’s well handicapped off his opening mark of 73. He was unlucky at Beverley on his second start when he stumbled on the bend and then had a wide trip at Thirsk last time but ran on well to be second from a difficult position.

Two Year Olds

Butterfly jasmine (gb).

  • 2-y-o; bay filly
  • Breeding: Havana Gold (IRE) - Winter Bloom (USA) (Aptitude (USA))
  • Next Race: Redcar, 05 Oct 2024 14:45

brian ellison stable tour

A winner on debut, she looked professional in a 5f novice at Newcastle at the end of March, beating subsequent winner and Listed placed Kuwaitya.

She knew her job but just lost a bit of weight after that so we backed off her. She’s looking fantastic now and is in the Super Sprint at Newbury next month.

Jayvee (IRE)

  • Breeding: Dandy Man (IRE) - Golden Salute (IRE) (Acclamation (UK))

brian ellison stable tour

Another first-time-out winner, Dandy Man’s March foal finished well to take a 5f fillies’ novice at Beverley at the end of April. She wasn’t disgraced in the Listed Marygate Stakes at York on her second start and finished mid-division in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The ground was far too lively for her at Ascot but Chris Hayes didn’t give her a hard time. She’s been sold to America but will continue racing for me until she goes.

Perfect Part (IRE)

  • 2-y-o; chestnut filly
  • Breeding: Mehmas (IRE) - Queensbrydge (UK) (Dutch Art (UK))
  • Last Race: York, 22 Aug 2024 13:50
  • Result: 5/9, pushed along in rear, ridden over 1f out, kept on inside final furlong

brian ellison stable tour

Mehmas filly Perfect Part advertised her potential with a debut win at Thirsk in early June – a race that has worked out well. After deciding to bypass the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, Ellison is now keen to step her up in trip.

I’d like to aim her at the 6f Lowther Stakes at York but we also have the option of the Listed Julia Graves (now Roses) Stakes over 5f there. The horse she beat at Beverley, Maw Lam, went on to finish third in the Queen Mary and the race was run in a faster time than the colts’ equivalent at that meeting. Ben Robinson rode her work the other day and she flew. I’m delighted that long-standing owner Keith Brown has an exciting horse on his hands.

Sybaris Jewel (IRE)

  • Breeding: Magna Grecia (IRE) - Malakite (IRE) (Rock Of Gibraltar (IRE))
  • Form: 304655

brian ellison stable tour

This Magna Grecia filly made an encouraging debut at Beverley in May but was outclassed in the Listed Marygate Stakes at York’s Dante Festival. With an official rating of 66, she is now poised for nurseries.

She’s been working very well at home and I think she’ll act well on the All-Weather. I’ve got her in a novice stakes at Newcastle on Saturday over 5f.

Brian Ellison stable tour

Brian Ellison Tour

Tour Summary

Located near the historic racing town of Malton we have put together a special package for anyone interested in horse racing – a fun and entertaining morning including breakfast, a trip to the gallops and an informative stable tour with leading trainer Brian Ellison .

Tour History

Brian has been training horses for 25 years and this is his 14th year at Spring Cottage Stables. There are 120 horses currently in training at Spring Cottage, in this very friendly, but professional yard.

Just a mile from the yard, are the superb Langton Wold Gallops, generally regarded as some of the finest in the country. The horses walk to the gallops, which itself is an ideal warm up.

Last year the yard produced over 100 winners and current stables stars include Top Notch Nonto, Montefltro, Bishops Castle and Saptapadi.

The horses under Brian's care are regularly turned in one of Spring Cottages' four paddocks.

Brian believes that keeping a horse 'sweet' is the hardest part of training and seeing how much the horses enjoy their freedom and each others company as they amble about the paddocks would warm any horse lovers heart!

Tour Itinerary

Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays (available October to March inclusive)

Start time: 8am (three-hour tour)

The fun starts the moment you arrive at Spring Cottage Stables , Langton Road, Norton, Malton, YO17 9PY where the day commences in the best way possible over a winning breakfast (guaranteed to set you up for the day) with Brian.

Afterwards Brian will take you on foot or drive you to the gallops to watch the string being put through their paces at first hand.

Next it is back to the stables and enjoy an informative tour of the yard to gain an insiders' view to some of the equine stars 'looking over the doors'.

Then over a mug of coffee you'll get the chance to ask Brian about the workings of a racing yard and hear tales 'from the horse's mouth' from his colourful careers in the Sport of Kings.

  • You will also receive a gift badge as a lasting memento of your visit.
  • For comfort and safety each tour is limited to groups of six.
  • Under 16s must be accompanied by a participating adult.
  • Finally, remember to pack your wellington boots and some warm clothing.

Nick Alexander can be forgiven for nominating Ayr as one of his favourite hunting grounds but his love affair with the West of Scotland course continued unabated after he notched up a 2,475-1 four-timer nine days ago.

Artic Row , Ozzy Cosmo , Cream Of The West and Beat The Retreat were the achievers at a course where he also notched a five-timer in March 2022. Nick said: “I love Ayr - it’s a very fair course and a very nice track to run at.

“We like having runners there and we were delighted with last week’s performances. The horses are in very good form but you’re only as good as your last winner, so hopefully we can keep it up.”

That quartet took the Kinneston trainer to 15 winners for the season from only 99 runners, and with a very busy period ahead Nick kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his hopes for further success.

Artic Mann (GB)

  • Trained by: N W Alexander
  • Last Race: Perth, 15 May 2024 18:52
  • Result: Won/9, tracked leaders, not fluent 4 out, pushed along and headway 2 out, disputed lead and jumped awkwardly right last, headed run-in, stayed on gamely to lead towards finish, just prevailed

Form profile

Winner of one of his 14 starts and currently rated 98 over hurdles. Placed in both of his starts this term and finished third, beaten five lengths, to Butler’s Brief in a handicap hurdle at Kelso (3m2f) in November off his current mark.

Trainer says

He hopefully runs at Ayr on Monday, and he may go chasing soon. He has run well in both his starts since he came back from a year off, and he is in very good form.

Artic Row (GB)

  • 7-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Yeats (IRE) - Line Artic (FR) (Freedom Cry (UK))
  • Last Race: Perth, 26 Apr 2024 15:15
  • Result: 5/10, prominent throughout, every chance when making headway 3 out, outpaced after 2 out, mistake last and weakened to fifth

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of two of his 12 starts and currently rated 100 over fences. Returned to winning form at Ayr (2m4½f) in December when beating Ardera Cross by nine lengths off a mark of 91.

Artic Row won very nicely last week at Ayr, and hopefully goes to Kelso on Sunday 14th January for a two-mile-five-furlong novices’ handicap chase.

Atlantic Dancer (IRE)

  • 11-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: Waky Nao (UNR) - Sarika (IRE) (Groom Dancer (USA))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 15 Apr 2024 16:30
  • Result: Won/7, chased leaders, not much room briefly before 2 out, led after 2 out, driven flat, held on

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of three of her 15 starts and currently rated 102. Finished sixth, beaten 30 lengths, to Moonlight Glory in a handicap hurdle at Newcastle (2m1f) in November off his current mark.

She runs at Kelso today (Friday 29th December). She is a course-and-distance winner, so hopefully she will go well again.

Ballyfort (IRE)

  • 6-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Fame And Glory (UK) - Mardale (IRE) (Robin Des Champs (FR))
  • Last Race: Newcastle, 16 Mar 2024 13:27
  • Result: 5/7, bit keen, close 3rd on inside, went left and hit 3 out, hung left and beaten next

brian ellison stable tour

Placed in three of his six point-to-points in Ireland. Finished fifth, beaten seven and a half lengths, to Primoz in a novices' hurdle at Ayr (2m) in November on debut for stable.

He is another who runs at Kelso today (Friday 29th December), and we were delighted with his first run at Ayr. He goes there with a good chance - he was a bit keen in the race and so wears a hood to try and settle him better. He took a while to get over that race, but he is in good form now.

Beat The Retreat (IRE)

  • 5-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Getaway (GER) - Lindy Lou (UK) (Hernando (FR))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 19 Apr 2024 16:30
  • Result: 7/9, off the pace towards rear, never on terms

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of one of his six starts and currently rated 92. Off the mark in a novices’ handicap hurdle at Ayr (2m2f) in December when beating Dance Thief by three quarters of a length off a mark of 86.

He won nicely at Ayr last week and, all being well, he goes back there on Tuesday (2nd January) to try and follow up. He has gone up 6lb but won nicely, and we didn't expect anything less.

Boolamore Classic (IRE)

  • Breeding: Workforce (UK) - Castlelost (IRE) (Flemensfirth (USA))
  • Last Race: Hexham, 04 May 2024 20:25
  • Result: 10/16, held up rear of mid-division, headway after 3 out, weakened before last

brian ellison stable tour

Finished runner-up in his second point-to-point in Ireland in October.

He hasn’t run for us yet, but hopefully he will be running imminently. He is entered at Ayr but if the ground is too heavy and it looks like it will be better at Newcastle, we will probably go there on Saturday 5th January. He looks like a stayer.

Cancan (FR)

  • 8-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: Al Namix (FR) - Kestrel Mail (FR) (Cricket Ball (USA))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 08 Mar 2024 14:30
  • Result: Won/14, mid-division on inside, headway tracking leaders going well after 4 out, went 2nd 2 out, led approaching last, soon clear, stayed on well

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of one of her 14 starts and currently rated 102 over hurdles. Finished runner-up, beaten seven lengths, to Sunday Soldier in a mares’ handicap hurdle at Musselburgh (1m7½f) in December off a mark of 100.

She runs at Musselburgh on Monday (1st January). It is a big step up in class and she just gets in at the bottom of the weights, but it’s worth going as it’s a nice race.

Cream Of The West (IRE)

  • 8-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Westerner (UK) - Clare Hogan (IRE) (Moscow Society (USA))
  • Last Race: Haydock, 30 Mar 2024 16:25
  • Result: PulledUp/10, rear of mid-division, mistake 4 out, soon behind, pulled up after

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of one of his four starts and currently rated 102 over hurdles. Off the mark in a handicap hurdle at Ayr (2m5½f) in December when beating Enemy At The Gate by a length and a quarter off a mark of 97.

He won nicely last week at Ayr and might go back there on Monday 8th January, or we might give him a little bit longer. He has come out of his race well.

Donny Boy (IRE)

  • Breeding: Westerner (UK) - Lady Roania (IRE) (Saddlers' Hall (IRE))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 20 Apr 2024 13:50
  • Result: 3/13, held up in rear, headway before 4 out, jumped right and not quicken 2 out, went 3rd and stayed on flat, no impression on winner

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of two of his 10 starts and currently rated 125 over fences. Runner-up in both chases this season, failing by just a head behind Jet Legs in a novices’ handicap chase at Newcastle (2m7½f) in December off a mark of 122.

He was just beaten a head at Newcastle on his latest start and the plan is to go to Doncaster at the end of January. He likes slightly better ground, so hopefully it won’t be too deep at Doncaster.

Dubai Days (IRE)

  • Breeding: Dubai Destination (USA) - Comeragh Girl (IRE) (Imperial Ballet (IRE))
  • Last Race: Haydock, 30 Mar 2024 15:15
  • Result: 2/9, towards rear, not fluent 2nd or 8th, headway before 4 out, went 3rd 3 out, chased winner 2 out, no impression, kept on

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of seven of his 29 starts and currently rated 122 over fences. Finished fifth, beaten six and three quarter lengths, to Red Happy in a handicap chase at Carlisle (2m5f) in December off a mark of 124.

He is in grand order, and he will be a veteran when we get into January. We are looking at a veterans' race at Market Rasen in the third week of January. The handicapper has given him a chance now and it’s a good race at Market Rasen. His best runs have tended to be heading into the spring, so we are hoping he can do the same this season.

Duyfken (GB)

  • Breeding: Le Havre (IRE) - Australienne (IRE) (Monsun (GER))
  • Last Race: Perth, 25 Apr 2024 14:25
  • Result: 7/11, midfield, ridden along after 3 out, soon no chance with leaders, not fluent last, weakened

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of one of his 13 starts and currently rated 105 over hurdles. Finished third, beaten eight and a quarter lengths, to Gamigin in a handicap hurdle at Ayr (2m) in December off his current mark.

He runs at Musselburgh on January 5th. He is going to step up in trip, and he ran very well over two miles at the course and also won at Perth. I think that going right-handed helps him a little, so we are looking forward to him going up in trip as he has some decent form.

Eloi Du Puy (FR)

  • Breeding: Jeu St Eloi (FR) - Martalina (FR) (Martaline (UK))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 15 Apr 2024 16:00
  • Result: 11/16, held up in rear, outpaced 3 out, some late headway but no chance

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of three of his 11 starts and currently rated 106 over hurdles. Has been in great form this autumn and completed a hat-trick when scoring by a length from R S Ambush in a novices’ handicap hurdle at Carlisle (2m3½f) in December off a mark of 102.

He has won his last three races and is on an upward curve. He might go to Ayr on January 8th.

Elvis Mail (FR)

  • 10-y-o; grey gelding
  • Breeding: Great Pretender (IRE) - Queenly Mail (FR) (Medaaly (UK))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 20 Apr 2024 15:35
  • Result: PulledUp/26, in rear, bad mistake and rider lost iron briefly 1st, jumped right after, slow 2nd, always behind, pulled up before 4 out

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of eight of his 30 starts and currently rated 145 over fences. Made a winning reappearance in a handicap chase at Kelso (3m2f) in October when scoring by two lengths from Highland Hunter off a mark of 143, before a well beaten seventh of nine, beaten 49 lengths, to Broadway Boy in a valuable Grade 3 handicap chase at Cheltenham (3m2f) in December off a mark of 146.

He ran down at Cheltenham last time - the plan now is to go for either the Peter Marsh at Haydock or, if the ground was really deep, then we would possibly go for the Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster on the last Saturday of the month. He ran very well at Cheltenham but got mildly hampered when something fell in front of him coming down the hill and it just broke his rhythm, and he never got going again. He finished the race well beaten, but I think he is better than he showed then.

Everyday Champagne (IRE)

  • 8-y-o; grey gelding
  • Breeding: Doyen (IRE) - Magie De Toulouse (FR) (Northern Crystal (UK))
  • Last Race: Perth, 14 Jul 2024 15:45
  • Result: 2/8, led, pushed along headed and headed 2 out, well held between last two, no chance with winner, just held on for 2nd

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of three of his 15 starts and currently rated 107 over fences. Made a winning debut for the stable when beating I Am Gonna Be by two lengths in a handicap chase at Ayr (2m4½f) in November off a mark of 103. Subsequently finished fourth, beaten 21 lengths, to Brayhill in a similar event at Newcastle (2m4f) in December off a mark of 108.

He was outgunned in better company over too short a trip the last day at Newcastle. We will probably wait for some better ground for him and go back to three miles. There should be plenty to come from him.

Fortescue Wood (IRE)

  • 9-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Westerner (UK) - Primrose Time (UK) (Alflora (IRE))
  • Last Race: Carlisle, 05 Feb 2024 14:02
  • Result: 5/5, held up in rear, dropped to last 4 out, soon ridden and weakened quickly, slow jump 3 out, tailed off 2 out

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of three of his six starts and currently rated 126 over hurdles. Scored by seven lengths from Benassi when last seen out in a novices’ hurdle at Ayr (2m) in February.

He runs at Haydock on Saturday. The form of his novice hurdles has worked out very well and he looks like he will be pitched in at the deep-end going in handicap hurdles off 126, but you can’t argue with his form and if he can run to that level, he will be involved.

Ginger Mail (FR)

  • Breeding: Sinndar (IRE) - Queenly Mail (FR) (Medaaly (UK))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 20 Apr 2024 14:25
  • Result: 11/15, held up towards rear, outpaced 3 out, well held next

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of two of his 13 starts and currently rated 120 over hurdles. Better effort this term on reappearance in a handicap hurdle at Ayr (2m) in November when runner-up, beaten a neck, to Park Annonciade off a mark of 118.

Again he went to Cheltenham and was a little disappointing. He travelled very well but didn’t appear to get home. I am not sure why, but the plan is to go back down in grade and run at Ayr on January 8th.

Gipsy Lee Rose (FR)

  • 10-y-o; grey mare
  • Breeding: Walk In The Park (IRE) - Vanoo D'orthe (FR) (Valanour (IRE))
  • Last Race: Newcastle, 05 Mar 2024 15:20
  • Result: Won/4, bit keen tracking leader, not fluent 8th, led 4 out, clear before 2 out, over 6 lengths ahead when slowed badly into last, ridden run-in, reduced lead towards finish, always doing enough

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of three of her 33 starts and currently rated 87 over fences. Returned to winning form on latest start in a handicap chase at Kelso (3m2f) at the end of November when beating Bretney by a short head off a mark of 84.

She runs at Kelso today (Friday 29th December), and she won there last time. She is in good form, and we are hoping for another big run.

Hombre De Guerra (IRE)

  • Breeding: Soldier of Fortune (IRE) - Lindy Lou (UK) (Hernando (FR))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 19 Apr 2024 13:20
  • Result: 7/13, mid-division, pushed along and weakened after 3 out

brian ellison stable tour

No wins from four starts and currently rated 111 over hurdles. Finished fourth, beaten 17½ lengths, to Florida Dream in a maiden hurdle at Ayr (2m) in December.

He runs at Ayr on Tuesday (2nd December) and steps up in trip to two and a half miles. His form has worked out very well, and I am hoping that he can make a mark in that race - I just don’t want the ground to be too deep.

Lacila Blue (FR)

  • 6-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: Muhaymin (USA) - Hispanola (FR) (Vangelis (USA))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 14 Jan 2024 12:50
  • Result: 6/10, always towards rear, pushed along going out on last circuit, reminders after 4th, plugged on run-in

brian ellison stable tour

No wins in nine starts and currently rated 95 over hurdles. Placed in all three outings this term and finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Hostile Hotelier in a novices’ handicap hurdle at Hexham (2m) in November off a mark of 93.

She hopefully goes to Kelso on January 14th. She is fine and the plan is to head for a valuable mares' handicap hurdle that she ran well in last year.

Mack The Man (IRE)

  • Breeding: Flemensfirth (USA) - Nifty Nuala (IRE) (Saddlers' Hall (IRE))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 26 May 2024 15:25
  • Result: 4/7, raced wide and prominent, led 2nd, ridden and headed between last two, lost 2nd before the last, ridden and weakened run-in

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of four of his 22 starts and currently rated 108 over hurdles and 126 over fences. Finished sixth, beaten 12½ lengths, to Better Getalong on stable debut in a handicap hurdle at Ayr (2m4½f) in December off a mark of 110.

He runs at Kelso today (Friday 29th December). He will like the ground and steps up in trip. He is very well handicapped on his old form but that was years ago, and we want to see a revival. I hope he will run very well.

Ned Tanner (IRE)

  • Breeding: Milan (UK) - Rose Tanner (IRE) (Roselier (FR))
  • Last Race: Carlisle, 30 Mar 2024 15:40
  • Result: 2/4, tracked leaders, went 2nd at 7th, ridden and every chance 2 out, kept on same pace

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of four of his 15 starts and currently rated 120 over fences. Best effort this term when runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Red Happy in a handicap chase at Kelso (2m5½f) in November off a mark of 119.

He runs at Haydock on Saturday (30th December). He is in great form, and I think his career best was at Haydock in March when he finished behind Richmond Lake, and that horse has gone onto greater things since. I think the return to two and a half miles around Haydock will see him run very well.

Niceandeasy (IRE)

  • 11-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Kalanisi (IRE) - High Priestess (IRE) (Priolo (USA))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 13 Feb 2024 15:55
  • Result: PulledUp/13, prominent, slow jump and pushed along on landing 9th, struggling before 3 out, tailed off when pulled up 2 out

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of six of his 29 starts and currently rated 106 over hurdles and 111 over fences. Gained his last success in a handicap hurdle at Kelso (3m2f) in November when beating Guernesey by three quarters of a length off a mark of 103.

He was a bit outgunned when stepped up in class at Haydock last week. I think we will drop him back in class, and the ground wasn’t quite soft enough for him either. He could go over hurdles or fences.

Ozzy Cosmo (IRE)

  • Breeding: Arctic Cosmos (USA) - Lily Rock (IRE) (Exit To Nowhere (USA))
  • Last Race: Kelso, 15 Apr 2024 14:00
  • Result: Fell/12, held up in touch, leaders went clear before 6th, 4th and well held when fell 2 out

brian ellison stable tour

Made a winning debut for the stable in a novices’ hurdle at Ayr (2m) in December when beating Nab Wood by two and a half lengths.

He won very nicely at Ayr on his stable debut last week. He got a little cut that day and the plan is to sort that out and not to rush him. He could go to Newcastle on January 30th.

Sanosuke (IRE)

  • Breeding: Galileo (IRE) - Fix (NZ) (Iffraaj (UK))
  • Last Race: Cartmel, 27 May 2024 17:45
  • Result: 7/13, prominent, slowed markedly into 1st and given reminder, ridden before 2 out, no extra before last

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of two of his 21 starts and currently rated 99. Finished third, beaten nine and three quarter lengths, to Champ Royal in a handicap hurdle at Musselburgh (3m) in December off his current mark.

He probably runs at Musselburgh on Monday 1st January. He ran a reasonable race at Musselburgh last time and can hopefully improve on that.

September Daisy (GB)

  • 9-y-o; bay mare
  • Breeding: September Storm (GER) - Alleged To Rhyme (IRE) (Leading Counsel (USA))
  • Last Race: Doncaster, 16 Dec 2023 12:50
  • Result: 6/14, soon towards rear, never involved

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of one of her 16 starts and currently rated 82 over hurdles. Finished sixth, beaten 23 lengths, to Phillapa Sue in a mares' handicap hurdle at Doncaster (3m½f) in December off a mark of 84.

She ran okay at Doncaster last time, but she wants better ground. I think we will go quietly with her, and she could have one run before the ground dries out. She won in May, and I think she is a spring mare.

Stainsby Girl (GB)

  • 10-y-o; chestnut mare
  • Breeding: Shirocco (GER) - Charmaine Wood (UK) (Double Trigger (IRE))
  • Last Race: Haydock, 17 Feb 2024 13:02
  • Result: Won/5, made all, jumped well, clear 3 out, unchallenged

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of eight of her 28 starts and currently rated 136 over hurdles. Best effort in three starts this term when runner-up, beaten two and three quarter lengths, to Park Annonciade in a handicap hurdle at Haydock (2m3f) in November off her current mark.

She was a bit out of her depth and didn’t get home over two and a half on a stiff track after being taken on in front. The plan is to run in a Listed race at Doncaster at the same meeting as the Great Yorkshire Chase. She is a very honest mare and deserves to get some black type.

Travail D'orfevre (FR)

  • Breeding: Martaline (UK) - Lady Needles (IRE) (Sri Pekan (USA))
  • Last Race: Perth, 24 Apr 2024 14:20
  • Result: 2/6, in touch in rear, headway to track leaders 3 out, ridden and pecked on landing last, rallied to go 2nd towards finish

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of three of his 15 starts and currently rated 105. Made a winning reappearance in a handicap chase at Carlisle (2m) in October when scoring by half a length from Gandhi Maker off a mark of 102, and subsequently finished runner-up, beaten five lengths, to Heezethebou in a similar event at Hexham (1m7½f) in December off his current mark.

He runs on Tuesday (2nd January) and is in great form. He has run two great races this season, and hopefully can run very well again.

Wakool (FR)

  • Breeding: Motivator (UK) - Symba's Dream (USA) (Vindication (USA))
  • Last Race: Ayr, 19 Apr 2024 15:20
  • Result: 9/14, slight lead until 2nd, steadily lost place and off the pace in mid-division, weakened 8th, tailed off

brian ellison stable tour

Winner of seven of his 27 starts and currently rated 140 over hurdles. Fell at the first in a handicap hurdle at Haydock (3m½f) in November and had previously finished sixth, beaten 11½ lengths, to Glinger Flame in a similar event at Ayr (3m½f) earlier that month off a mark of 141.

He runs at Ayr on Tuesday (2nd January). Unfortunately he fell at the first in the valuable staying handicap hurdle at Haydock in November and was a little sore for a day or two, but he is absolutely fine now. He runs in a race he was second in last year and won two years ago - hopefully he can be first or second again.

Definitly Red is a class act for the Brian Ellison team

Jumps Stable Tours: Brian Ellison | David Ord visits Spring Cottage Stables in Malton

David Ord visited Brian Ellison's impressive Spring Cottage Stables to get the lowdown on his team for the new National Hunt season.

He’s been out this season and won at Sedgefield and just got beat the next time. He’ll have another go over fences at some stage. He had a bad back last year and we took him over to Ger Kelly and he’s done a great job with him. He’ll go to Wetherby at the end of the month.

We bought him from Gigginstown and he came out and won a £20,000 chase. We decided to run him on the Flat this summer and he won at Carlisle and ran fourth at Galway. He’s won a bumper, flat, hurdles and a chase. He isn’t the biggest but tries hard.

BALLYCRISTAL

He won is novice chase lat season but has been a bit disappointing in two starts this year. When you run him over three miles he looks like he wants two-and-half, run him over two-and-a-half and he looks like he wants three. We'll keep trying with him and he’s won a bumper, hurdle and chase for us. He'll win again.

BALLYVIC BORU

He’s won over hurdles and fences but is a little prone to injury and you have to treat him with kid gloves. He has a lot of talent and will be alight.

BARRYS JACK

He won three for us last year having got him from Ireland. He loves heavy ground and while he isn’t the biggest he’s come in fresh and well and will hopefully win a race or two.

BORDEAUX BILL

He's a horse I like. We took him to Ger Kelly because he had back issues but he’s in great fettle now and ready to run. He looks ready to roll and we’ll kick on with him. He’ll win.

CONTRE TOUS

He likes going right-handed and wants an easy track and returned at Ludlow last week. He’s capable when conditions are right.

DEFINITLY RED

He's a star and a horse who loves his work. He’ll return at Wetherby in either the Charlie Hall or three-mile hurdle. I’ll talk to Phil Martin and we’ll decide what to do. We’ll see what season we have but the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup would be on our mind. He handles soft ground but it was too testing for him in it last season. He could go there again though. He’s improved ten pounds each year and is rated 167 now. We space his runs out, he’ll have four or five again, and has come back looking great. We’ll go to Wetherby and plan from there.

He's the owner's pet and we didn’t pay a lot for him. He’s won a fair few races for us and runs on the flat, over hurdles and fences. He's a grand old horse.

FOREST BIHAN

He’s a horse with a lot of ability and I still think he’s better than he's shown so far. We're going to give him a spin on the flat soon and see how good he is at that. He's a good horse and takes some working with, he’s a proper work horse. There are some good pots around on the Flat nowadays but he's a horse who could go anywhere over hurdles and fences too.

Forest Bihan: Held in high regard

INSTANT REPLAY

He ran in a few hurdle races and disappointed us so we put him over fences and he was a different horse. He won a couple but the handicapper hammered him. He started off over hurdles but will go chasing again.

LUCKY ROBIN

We got him from Ireland where he didn’t have much form but he’s won a couple for us. He was second at Sedgefield last time and is a handy sort who can go on the flat or over fences.

A good flat horse, he had a great juvenile season over hurdles, finishing third in the Fred Winter. He suffered a bit last year as they often do from four to five. He’s come in looking great and will go over fences.

PISTOL PARK

His owners love him and every year he wins. He wants soft ground and has come in looking great. He’ll win again when conditions are right.

RAVENHILL ROAD

He's pleased me with his schooling and he’s class over a fence. He’ll start out in novice chases and should be winning races. He’s a very good horse. I’m lucky to have Phil and Julie Martin in the yard as they buy good ones – and this fellow is one of them.

My Stable - Horse Tracking Made Simple

Click here to register log in to your My Stable account

It’s that time of the year when jump season takes centre stage. With thousands of horses, hundreds of jockeys and plenty of trainers performing across the UK & Ireland in multiple meetings every single day, it can be tough to keep track of all that catches your eye.

But not any longer. Our My Stable service is the simple and perfect way to stay on top (and ahead) of the game. You can easily follow the progress of your favourite horses, jockeys and trainers across six months of pure racing theatre by adding them to My Stable.

It’s your own personal space on your free Sporting Life account where you can create a yard full of talent that means something to you. That way, you can develop your racing knowledge and build a better picture of the races to come. Plus, you also get notifications when anyone in My Stable is due to perform so you never miss a jump – or an opportunity to profit.

SAM'S ADVENTURE:

I love Sam. He won his bumpers including a nice one at Newbury. He’s a very, very good horse and last year just got a problem midway through the season which just stopped us. This time he’s come back looking great and is ready to run. He’s schooled great.

SIANNES STAR

A half-brother to Ballycristal but a bit more hyper. Bally is very laid back but this fellow is a bit more on the bridle and keen. He needs to settle down and learn about his racing. He’ll be fine and maybe just wants a fence to get him to concentrate properly. He was third on his reappearance at Sedgefield.

I bought him from Richard Fahey and he came out and won on the Flat. We ran him over run hurdles last backend but he was probably just over the top. He’s ready to go again now and just wants a bit of soft ground. He’s tough and hardy and should take to it.

TICKERTY BOO

She’s had nine races now and I just don’t know why she isn't winning. We probably need to make more use of her. She jumps nicely and is well handicapped. She’d jump a fence one day.

He’s come back in and looks great. He’s not a bad horse and is another who will be winning races.

WINDSOR AVENUE

Probably the best novice in the yard. He won his two bumpers last year and made a good start over hurdles when second to Al Dancer at Carlisle. He jumps for fun and I’m very excited by him.

Phil bought him from France and he's a half-brother to Apterix. He's very different physically, much bigger, and is nice. We’ll have a lot of fun with him.

A very, very nice horse who we’re just waiting for some soft ground with. He works well and will win races. He’s one I’m excited about for bumpers.

Brian Ellison Racing

Spring Cottage Stables

Spring Cottage Stables dates back well over 200 years and was the home to the famous late William I’Anson, owner and trainer of Blink Bonny who won the 1857 Epsom Derby at 20/1 and Blair Athol who won the Epsom Derby and St Leger in 1864.

Prior to Brian’s purchase in August 2000 trainer William Haigh occupied the yard. William trained from Spring Cottage Stables for 25 years and enjoyed a great deal of success.

There were 25 stables when Brian arrived at the yard. There are now 110 stables.

“We truly cater to what the horses need. Their living situation is a reflection of that”. Brian Ellison

There are traditional stables and American barns and for some of our more quirky Equine residents we have 15 open-air stables. These stables are designed very much like a field shelter, a stable without doors with a small-railed turnout area directly in front. On the ground throughout is a mix of sand and rubber.

Traditional Stables & Barns

Open air stables, total capacity.

brian ellison stable tour

OPEN AIR STABLES

Catering to their needs.

Brian explains: “I put these stables up for horses who might be box-walkers and don’t like being confined to a stable, bleeders or others with respiratory problems, who benefit from being in the open air, or crib-biters who will always find something in a stable to grab and take in air.”

“They can’t do that when they’re housed like this because there are no fitments in the shelter and outside the top rails are all electrified. We’ve had great results and a number of otherwise unhappy individuals are now thriving in their new surroundings.”
