Down two E Streeters, Bruce Springsteen’s brilliance still shined through at AAC

Covid sidelined steven van zandt and singer-violinist soozie tyrell for springsteen’s first dallas show in nearly seven years..

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the American Airlines Center in Dallas,...

Bruce Springsteen has played 25 shows in Dallas in the last 50 years, from a half-empty Gertie’s nightclub in 1974 to an overflowing Cotton Bowl in 1985. But his concert Friday night at American Airlines Center was in a category all its own.

Performing for the first time in Dallas in nearly seven years, the Boss had to make do with an E Street Band decimated by illness: He announced from the stage that guitarist Steven Van Zandt — his right-hand-man since the ‘70s — was out of the lineup after he came down with COVID-19 .

Sorry folks. Covid. https://t.co/QFV8cF8emy — 🕉🇺🇦Stevie Van Zandt☮️💙 (@StevieVanZandt) February 11, 2023

Longtime singer-violinist Soozie Tyrell missed her second show in a row due to the coronavirus, and Springsteen’s wife, singer Patti Scialfa, was a no-show as well, although Springsteen didn’t say whether she was sick or not. (She regularly skipped shows on the last tour.)

“We’re missing a few people tonight … but goddammit, we’re gonna give Dallas the best show you’ve ever seen!” Springsteen howled to the near-capacity crowd.

Veteran Bruce concertgoers — this was my 15th show — expect that kind of comic hyperbole. Suffice to say Friday’s show was most definitely not one of his best. Not by a long shot.

Clad in a black pearl snap shirt and black pants, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band...

Yet hiccups and all, it was a reminder that Springsteen is still one of music’s greatest showmen.

All of the absent E Streeters were missed, especially Van Zandt, whose theatrics and garage-rock licks are usually a key ingredient. Bassist Gary Tallent, an ace with a low-key stage presence, moved closer to Springsteen. So did saxophonist Jake Clemons — Clarence’s nephew — and percussionist Anthony Almonte, who stole the spotlight during his manic duel with Max Weinberg on “The E Street Shuffle.”

Bruce Springsteen performs before fans with the E Street Band at the American Airlines...

On the sixth show of the tour, the band sounded rusty at times, with the four-man horn section occasionally flubbing notes. Springsteen’s voice — rough-hewn to begin with — was unusually raspy as he struggled to hit the mark in “Thunder Road” and a dozen other songs. Still, he sang with such emotion and conviction the blemishes were easy to overlook.

As usual, his energy level was off the charts.

At 73, the singer no longer sprints, leaps and slides across the stage like he did in his “Glory Days,” to name one of a half-dozen classics he played during the big finale. Yet Springsteen remains a freakishly talented entertainer, with an endless supply of athletic high jinks, hambone theatrics and evangelical outbursts, all delivered with impeccable comic timing. In “Badlands,” he sang “It ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive,” and for nearly three hours, he put on a nonstop display of joie de vivre.

At times, it was the simple things, like his hilarious imitation of Curly from The Three Stooges during “Rosalita.” Or his exuberant ‘60s-style dance during his cover of the Aretha Franklin hit “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied).” Or the moment he spied a preschooler in the crowd and rushed over to give her his harmonica.

Clad in a black pearl snap shirt and black pants, Bruce Springsteen (right) performs with...

At other times, he dug deeper to explain the joy of living. In one of the night’s rare storytelling moments, he introduced the solo acoustic “Last Man Standing” by saying he was now the sole survivor from his New Jersey high school band the Castiles.

“It’s like standing on a railroad track with the hot light bearing down on you,” he said. “It makes you realize how important every moment is.”

The song was one of four he played from 2020′s mostly-excellent Letter to You . It’s one of four studio albums he’s released since 2014, but he hasn’t received a Grammy nomination for any of them.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the American Airlines Center in Dallas,...

Springsteen may be yesterday’s news to the music industry. But Friday’s concert, flaws and all, showed his music is as relevant as ever.

Before the tour launched earlier this month, some longtime fans spoke out over sky-high ticket prices for the best seats due to fluctuating “dynamic pricing” methods.

Ticket pricing is always a tricky topic — especially for an artist with an everyman image like Springsteen. But it’s worth noting that by Friday, prices had dropped to less than $20 for upper deck seats, with some lower-bowl tickets selling for less than $120.

The moral of the story?

Early birds pay the most, and a Springsteen show is a bargain at almost any price.

Patti Scialfa, wife and bandmate of Bruce Springsteen, reveals secret illness, multiple myeloma

Scialfa shared the details in a new documentary about e street band., by aryelle siclait | today • published september 9, 2024 • updated on september 9, 2024 at 1:10 pm.

In a new documentary, Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen’s wife and E Street Band member, reveals she was diagnosed with blood cancer multiple myeloma in 2018.

Scialfa shared the news in “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 8, according to  Variety .

“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” the 71-year-old said in the film. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two, and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”

Variety reported Scialfa didn’t attend the premiere for the documentary. The current state of her health and whether she is receiving treatment for her myeloma is unclear.

The cancer Scialfa was diagnosed with, multiple myeloma, creates cancerous plasma cells in the bone marrow, which prevent the body from producing antibodies and reducing the ability to fight off infection, per  Mayo Clinic . It's not clear what causes it and there’s no cure.

Not everyone with multiple myeloma receives treatment. In some cases, if the cancer is not progressing and not causing symptoms, doctors may opt for a wait-and-see approach. It's not clear if Scialfa needed or still needs treatment for her myeloma.

Symptoms of multiple myeloma include:

  • Bone pain, especially in the hips, spine or chest
  • Digestive issues, such as nausea, constipation and loss of appetite
  • Mental issues, such as tiredness and brain fog
  • Weight loss
  • Thirst and needing to pee more than usual

The cancer is more common in people in their late 60s, as well as men, Black people and those with a family history of multiple myeloma. Treatments, if needed, include immunotherapy, CAR-T cell therapy, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, radiation and more.

Between 42% and 82% of people diagnosed with multiple myeloma survive for four years or more,  according to Cleveland Clinic .

Bruce Springsteen's health issues

Scialfa isn't the only band member who's had to deal with illness. In 2023,  Springsteen revealed health issues  of his own. The “Born to Run” singer announced via  X  that he and the E Street Band would be postponing their shows because Springsteen had a peptic ulcer.

In 2024, he announced via  Instagram  that he’d be postponing additional concert dates until the following year on doctor’s orders due to “vocal issues,” TODAY.com reported at the time.

A few months later, Springsteen shared additional details about the ordeal with  SiriusXM’s   E Street Radio . “When I had the stomach problem, one of the big problems was that I couldn’t sing,” Springsteen said. “You sing with your diaphragm. My diaphragm was hurting so badly that when I went to make the effort to sing, it was killing me. So, I literally couldn’t sing at all.”

Springsteen’s also gotten candid about his mental and physical health. In 2012, Springsteen told The New Yorker that he’d dealt with “intervals of depression.” Scialfa added that therapy has helped him.

Google co-founder and ex-Alphabet president Sergey Brin said he's back working at Google "pretty much every day" because he hasn't seen anything as exciting as the recent progress in AI -- and doesn't want to miss out. Last year, several publications reported that Brin was back at Google HQ working on various AI projects, but the sit-down is the first time Brin has publicly commented on his return. "It's a big, fast-moving field," Brin said of AI, adding that there is "tremendous value to humanity," before explaining why he doesn't think training more capable AI will require massively scaling up compute.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band still rock, quake and shake after 50 years

Portrait of Melissa Ruggieri

WASHINGTON – In a couple of weeks, Bruce Springsteen will turn 75.

His hair might be lighter and health setbacks more frequent , but not even age can quash his unabashed zeal when he steps onto a stage, clutching the neck of his recognizable butterscotch-hued guitar and belting the first of many, “One, two, three, fah!”s.

Also celebrating a September milestone: the “heart-stopping, pants-dropping, house-rocking, earthquaking, booty-shaking, Viagra-taking, lovemaking – le-gen-dary E Street Band,” as the merry band of musical musketeers is introduced by their boss .

Though only bassist Garry Tallent remains from Springsteen’s early band in 1972, a mighty pack of E Streeters – drummer Max Weinberg, guitarist Nils Lofgren, pianist Roy Bittan and colorful consigliere/guitarist Steven Van Zandt – have shared the stage with Springsteen since being christened for a street in Belmar, New Jersey, 50 years ago this month.

So it was only appropriate that a dozen songs into Springsteen's typical marathon three-hour show Saturday at Nationals Park (a makeup date from last summer’s tour postponement ), the Motown-esque brass that powers “The E Street Shuffle” blasted from the stadium stage.

Springsteen revived the rollicking rocker that introduces 1973’s “The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle” album when this ongoing world tour commenced in February 2023, a subtle nod to the band’s legacy as well as a showcase for Weinberg’s breathless sticks work.

A communal spirit soars at a Springsteen show

But here’s the thing: Even if Springsteen is having an off night (he wasn’t) or the E Street Band muffs a cue (they didn’t) or the set list doesn’t include everyone’s pick for “Springsteen’s best song” (debatable) … it doesn’t matter.

The feeling of solidarity at a Springsteen concert is matchless.

Whether it was the opening “Seeds” – an infrequently played track from Springsteen’s 1986 live box set – or the houselights-up encore of “Born to Run,” the 40,000-plus fans packing the stadium sang as a cohesive congregation worshipping at Springsteen Chapel.

The communal spirit is different, stronger at a Springsteen show , both in the crowd and on the stage.

Watching saxophonist Jake Clemons – who replaced his revered uncle Clarence after his death in 2011 – lean an elbow on Springsteen’s shoulder and grin as they played “Prove It All Night” or Springsteen and Van Zandt mug for the cameras with wide eyes and guitar notes rocketing to a frenzy during “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)” epitomizes the camaraderie of the E Street Band.

But observing the audience throughout the show – some giddy bros taking selfies, moms and teens alike shouting the words to “Hungry Heart” as Springsteen mingled among them, hardcore fans reciting the words to a recast “Atlantic City” – is as heartening as hearing these durable songs.

Why Bruce Springsteen will never retire

As usual for a Springsteen show, the first half is contemplative, filled with probing lyrics (“Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The Promised Land,” “Long Walk Home”) and camera close-ups of Springsteen’s furrowed brow and cocked eyebrow, indicators of how deeply he still feels these songs.

The latter part of the show is a barroom bacchanal of finger-waving, chorus-belting anthems (“Badlands,” “Thunder Road,” “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out”). These songs still resonate, whether the middle-aged malaise treaty wrapped in a bow (“Dancing in the Dark”) or the perfect-song-for-the-moment written as a post-9/11 resurrection (“The Rising”), but the drums beat a little harder and the choruses grip a little tighter.

Through it all, the focal point is always the unassuming guy and his guitar , dressed on this night in a spiffy tie and vest to rival his drummer’s – they could moonlight as the law firm of Springsteen and Weinberg – and conjuring gritty vocals and robust yells.

There is always the feeling when witnessing our remaining legends that this could be the last tour, the last visit to your city, the last time.

But watching Springsteen sweat, snarl and smile as he tears through nearly 30 songs, one gets the feeling he will need to be dragged off stage by the belt loops of his jeans rather than retire.

Church may now continue.

Bruce Springsteen postpones the rest of his 2023 tour due to peptic ulcer disease

He may be tougher than the rest, but the Boss still knows when it's time to take a break.

On Wednesday, Bruce Springsteen announced on social media that he and the E Street Band would be postponing all of their remaining 2023 tour dates as the singer continues to receive treatment for peptic ulcer disease.

"Thanks to all my friends and fans for your good wishes, encouragement, and support," Springsteen said in an Instagram statement . "I'm on the mend and can't wait to see you all next year."

All remaining tour dates, including those postponed earlier this month , will now be rescheduled at their original venues in 2024. Tickets to the events will remain valid. Those who are unable to attend the new dates, which will be revealed next week, will have 30 days to request a refund.

Earlier this month, the 73-year-old rocker revealed his health diagnosis and postponed several concerts in a social media post . At the time, Springsteen had already postponed two shows in Philadelphia after falling ill, though no details were given about the nature of his illness. Those dates were rescheduled for August 2024.

"Over here on E Street, we're heartbroken to have to postpone these shows," Springsteen said in a statement. "First, apologies to our fabulous Philly fans who we missed a few weeks ago. We'll be back to pick these shows up and then some. Thank you for your understanding and support. We've been having a blast at our US shows and we're looking forward to more great times. We'll be back soon. Love and God bless all, Bruce."

Springsteen kicked off his tour on Feb. 1 in Tampa, Fla., and has been criss-crossing the globe all year, mostly without a hitch, save for a brief fall onstage in Amsterdam in May. The tour was originally slated to wrap up on Dec. 12 in San Francisco.
