The Ultimate Guide to Travel Vouchers: All You Need to Know

Last Updated: April 30, 2024 July 18, 2024

Travel vouchers are a valuable resource for adventurers seeking to explore the world while saving money. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a long-haul journey, understanding the different types of travel vouchers can help you use them effectively. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is a Travel Voucher?

A travel voucher is a certificate that you can redeem to cover all or part of your travel costs. These vouchers can be issued by airlines, cruise lines, hotels, travel agencies, or tour operators.

They’re usually digital, and you may receive them when a travel provider, like an airline or cruise service, makes an error on a previous trip. For instance, if an airline bumps you from a flight that’s overbooked, they might give you a voucher for a free later flight. You might also receive one if you’ve purchased and then cancel a flight or accommodation that’s not refundable for cash.

Types of Travel Vouchers

Travel vouchers all essentially work in the same way by applying their value to the cost of your trip. However, it’s important to know the different types and what specific scenarios you can use them in:

  • Airline vouchers: Airlines may issue these as compensation for flight delays, cancellations, or overbooking. They’re typically good towards future flights with the same airline.
  • Hotel vouchers: Hotels often issue vouchers for complementary stays, room upgrades, or discounts on future bookings. You may receive one as compensation for inconveniences during your stay or as part of a loyalty program.
  • Travel agency vouchers: Travel agencies may offer vouchers as promotional incentives or as compensation for booking errors or inconveniences. You can usually redeem them for discounts on future bookings or additional travel services.
  • Tour vouchers: Tour operators sometimes provide vouchers for discounts on guided tours, excursions, or activities at various destinations. These vouchers may be included as part of a travel package or offered separately as promotional incentives.
  • Cruise vouchers: Cruise lines may issue vouchers for onboard credits, cabin upgrades, or discounts on future voyages as compensation for service issues or as part of loyalty programs.

Benefits of Travel Vouchers

Travel vouchers offer numerous benefits for travelers, such as:

  • Cost savings: Vouchers can substantially reduce your travel costs, allowing you to stretch your budget further and enjoy more experiences.
  • Added value: Vouchers often come with added perks, such as room upgrades, complementary services, or discounts on additional purchases, enhancing the overall travel experience.
  • Convenience: Redeeming vouchers is usually a straightforward process that you can complete online, making it convenient to take advantage of their benefits.

How To Use Travel Vouchers

Using travel vouchers is typically a straightforward process, depending on their specific terms and conditions. Here’s a general guide on how to use these vouchers effectively:

  • Check the expiration date: Most travel vouchers have a set expiration date, so it’s essential to verify the validity period before planning your trip.
  • Read the terms and conditions: Review the terms and conditions associated with the voucher, including any restrictions or limitations on its use. For instance, some vouchers may have blackout dates when they’re not eligible for use.
  • Redeem online or contact provider: Depending on the voucher, you’ll likely redeem it online through the provider’s website or app. Alternatively, you may need to contact the provider directly to make arrangements.
  • Book your trip: Once you’ve decided on your travel dates and destination, proceed to book your flights, accommodations, tours, or other services using the voucher.
  • Apply the voucher code: At the end of the booking process, the site will usually prompt you to enter the voucher code to apply the discount.
  • Confirm your reservation: After applying the voucher, double-check your reservation details to ensure accuracy and confirm that the voucher has been properly applied.

With your travel arrangements confirmed, all that’s left to do is pack your bags and embark on your adventure. By following these steps and staying informed about the terms and conditions of your travel voucher, you can make the most of its benefits and enjoy a memorable travel experience.

Common Questions About Travel Vouchers

How long do travel vouchers last?

How long your voucher lasts depends on the provider and the terms of the voucher. Some vouchers may expire in a few months, while others may be good for a year or more. Others may have no expiration date. Check the expiration date when you receive the voucher, and plan to use it within its valid period so you don’t miss out.

Are there any restrictions on using travel vouchers?

Travel vouchers may come with certain restrictions on how you can use them, such as blackout dates, minimum stay requirements, or restrictions on specific destinations or services. Make sure to carefully review the voucher’s terms and conditions before using it so you know what to expect.

What happens if I lose my travel voucher?

Most travel vouchers are electronic and stored on the provider’s website, so you don’t need to worry about losing them. However, if you lose a physical voucher, contact the issuer as soon as possible to report the loss. Depending on their policies, they may reissue the voucher. However, there may be fees or restrictions associated with replacing lost vouchers, so it’s best to act quickly and follow the issuer’s instructions.

Can I insure a trip booked with a travel voucher?

Yes, you can typically insure a trip booked with a travel voucher, however the amount of the travel voucher should not be included within your trip cost. This is because travel insurance is designed to cover the out-of-pocket monetary expenses travelers spend on their trip. Since you did not pay the cash value out-of-pocket for the voucher, it is not considered a reimbursable trip expense.

If you have booked a trip using a travel voucher, you can insure the additional prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. Most policies are comprehensive, meaning in addition to coverage for your trip costs, you can also be covered for interruptions, medical emergencies, travel delays, and more.

Help someone get their next pair of hiking boots, climbing harness, or backpacking tent with an REI gift card. There are lots of travel sites that offer budget airline vouchers, but which are the best? Well, today we’ll tell you all about them.

In this post, we’ll show you where to find cheap flights, and how to use travel vouchers to save even more money.

So let’s take a look at the best travel sites for booking cheap flights.

Where to Find Budget Travel Vouchers

How To Find Budget Travel Voucher Codes

Traveling is an expensive hobby. Not only does it cost money to go somewhere, but you also have to consider accommodation costs, food, and entertainment. In short, it can be quite a drain on your wallet.

Luckily, travel is a hobby that is within the reach of just about everyone. So, if you want to start traveling, the first thing you should do is make sure you’re prepared.

Here are some ways to budget for travel:

1. Book your flights in advance – It’s important to book your flights as early as possible. This way you won’t have to worry about paying high airfare prices.

2. Stay in hostels – Hostel accommodations are usually cheap, and it’s a great way to meet people from all over the world.

3. Stay in Airbnbs – An AirBnB is a room you rent from someone else, who you don’t know. This is a great way to save money on accommodation.

4. Travel during off-peak times – The peak season is when most travelers want to visit certain destinations. But, if you want to save money on accommodation, it’s a good idea to travel during off-peak times.

5. Use websites like Kayak.com to get the lowest airfare prices – Many of the best deals on flights and hotels are available online.

6. Sign up for loyalty programs – Loyalty programs are great for saving money on your next trip . Some companies will reward you with rewards points just for visiting their stores.

7. Consider using sites like Airbnb and Hotels.com – You can also find cheap accommodation by using these websites. They connect travelers with locals who have rooms they’re willing to rent.

8. Avoid tourist traps – You might think that a local restaurant will be more expensive than a chain restaurant, but it can actually be cheaper. This is because you won’t have to pay for the location of the restaurant.

9. Go during the off-season – During the off-season, hotel rates are much lower. So, if you can, try to go during the summer months .

How to Save Money On Your Next Trip

So, what are some of the things that I would recommend keeping in mind when planning your next vacation ? Well, let’s take a look!

First, I’d say it’s important to be realistic about your expectations. Don’t plan on spending a fortune on your trip. You’re going to be sharing a room with other people and eating food that’s going to be more expensive than you’re used to.

Second, I’d say it’s important to keep in mind that there are things you can do to save money while you’re away.

For example, you might want to consider bringing your own water bottle and reusable coffee mug. By doing so, you can cut down on the cost of plastic water bottles and disposable coffee cups.

You might also want to consider bringing snacks that you can make yourself rather than buying them in airports. You could do this by packing a cooler and using your own ingredients.

Finally, I’d say it’s important to remember that there are some things that you should not do when you’re traveling . For example, you shouldn’t expect to have access to Wi-Fi or cell service in most parts of the world.

This means you’ll probably have to download stuff while you’re away. If you’re traveling on a budget , you might want to consider bringing a tablet or laptop with you.

Tips to Make Your Vacation Budget Friendly

We all love vacations. But we can’t afford to go on every vacation. We all have bills to pay and we have to save money. But how do we make our vacation budget-friendly? There are so many things we need to consider when planning a vacation.

Vacations are fun and relaxing , but they’re also expensive. This post will walk you through some tips that can help you stay within your budget while you’re enjoying a vacation.

First, plan ahead. Make a list of things you want to do while you’re away, and make sure you know how much it will cost before you book the trip.

This way, you won’t find yourself scrambling for money on the last day of your trip .

Second, research prices. There are many websites that offer flight deals, hotel deals, car rentals , and more.

You can also research your destination online. Do a little digging and see what kinds of deals are available for the places you want to visit.

Third, consider traveling during the off-peak seasons. This will allow you to save a lot of money. Many hotels offer discounts for off-peak travel.

For example, if you booked a room for two people during peak season, you might be charged double the price during the off-peak season.

Fourth, don’t forget to pack some essentials. Bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes, a good book, a couple of movies, and plenty of snacks.

Also, don’t forget to bring any medication you may need. Make sure you keep all your important papers in one place so you can quickly grab them when you arrive at your destination.

And finally, if you have any questions about your vacation, don’t hesitate to call your bank or credit card company. They’re often willing to waive fees or provide other discounts.

Myths About Vacation Budget

The travel industry is constantly evolving. And while traditional hotel chains are still very much around, there are other ways to save on your next trip .

For example, there are budget travel voucher sites that offer deals on airfares, hotel rooms, and even tours.

These sites usually specialize in offering deals on things that people actually need. So instead of saving money on things that you might never use, they give you more of a bang for your buck.

This is the most important thing to save money on traveling. It makes all the difference. You can never predict when a hurricane is going to hit or when an earthquake is going to happen, but you can always book your trip far in advance.

They offer discounted vouchers on a range of travel-related products and services. You’ll need to create an account on their site and purchase a voucher to get the discount. However, the amount of savings is often quite high.

There are several ways to find budget travel vouchers, but the most effective ones are usually those that provide you with a combination of price and time.

For example, one of the most popular websites where to find budget travel vouchers is Hotels.com, which is one of the biggest booking sites in the world.

Another place to look for budget travel vouchers is at travel agencies, where you can find a variety of different options. Another place to find cheap travel vouchers is at websites like Expedia, which provides a range of different ways to save on travel .

travel coupons sites

Between baggage fees and gas prices, any vacation discount these days is especially welcome. “Social coupon” websites provide fast and easy ways to trim your travel expenses -- if you research carefully. We’ve read the fine print -- here are our picks for solid sites offering deals and rewards on everything from lodging to fun things to do while on vacation. Sites to ... Find and Track Flash Sales Each day, users of sites like Groupon and DailyCandy purchase steeply discounted coupons (“vouchers,” “deals,” etc.) during limited-time “flash sales,” then print or download them for later use directly with the retailer. Get buddies to join you in an Eversave beer tasting, and earn credits toward your next coupon, or savor those suds completely free with LivingSocial . Tracking deals is easy with mobile apps, Facebook, Twitter and email alerts. Sites to ... Snag Affordable Weekend Getaways Looking for an affordable weekend getaway? LivingSocial Escapes offers hand-picked travel packages at discounted rates. Most deals are lodging-based, like a Napa Valley B&B weekend -- but you’ll also find the occasional Alaska fishing or Nepal hiking package. After you purchase a travel package, make sure to tell your friends via a tweet, Facebook post or unique link sent via email. If 3 friends buy the deal using your link, your package is free. (You can pay your friends back in daiquiris during your next St. Lucia girls’ getaway.) In conjunction with travel giant Expedia, Groupon Getaways offers handpicked deals on hotels and resorts – best of all, with a booking guarantee. Yuupon is a travel deal/booking engine hybrid that incorporates TripAdvisor ratings with fewer restrictions than other coupon sites. Photo-filled JetSetter scrutinizes hotels and vacation homes for “personality, style, great service and a sense of place.” TripAlertz believes travel should not be just a transaction, and donates 1% of direct revenue to sustainability efforts. Sites to ... Get Discounts on Day Activities You’ll want to keep yourself occupied while on vacation -- and that takes money. But fret not. Sister site LivingSocial Adventures offers great deals on a wide-range of 1-day activities like kayaking, yoga and mud runs. Try these activities at your destination or even in your hometown. For local deals, check out AmazonLocal , which can save you up to 75% on restaurants, spas and many more entertainment options. AmazonLocal's iPhone app lets you shop for deals on the go. And consider Groupon Now! offerings -- 50%-off vouchers around the US on food, bars and other entertainment options within the next 24 hours. GrouponLive and G-Passes promise entertainment tickets and expedited admission. Refer a friend to sign up for Groupon and earn a $10 credit when they buy their first coupon. Eversave also offers $10 for each referral. Sites to ... Travel in Style Daily Candy seeks “what's new in fashion, food, and fun,” primarily for women. The site offers occasional travel deals and travel-useful products like language CDs and bicycles. Ditto for style savings site Rue La La for golf, luggage, limousines and more. But ... Read the Fine Print Travel industry minutiae can be profuse. Coupon sites try valiantly to simplify things, but a multitude of murky exceptions and blackout dates can apply. So as with any travel booking, read (and reread) the offer carefully. A recent Living Social Tanzania safari package, for example, advertised itself as $3,996 but didn’t include the $430 entrance fees, gratuities and other expenses listed at the bottom of the page. Deals can also sell out at any time, and availability isn’t guaranteed -- if a hotel can sell $300 rooms during a big event, your $100 Groupon room may disappear (though you will be refunded). And it’s often unclear when you become the retailer’s responsibility. Coupon sites complicate things further by claiming “no questions” 30-day return policies on one page, then “case by case basis” on another (as in Eversave’s case). Losing out on a leg waxing is one thing; losing your deluxe cruise cabin is another. Bottomline: Confirm all return policies and whom to call for what. More Fine Print -- and Why the Search Is Worth It! Many users comment (and demonstrate mathematically) that deals aren’t always the vast savings these sites claim -- 50, 60, 70% and more. Also not uncommon is a coupon offer that is no better than a deal found right on the hotel’s own website. It’s difficult to actively search for a deal or property you want, like “Oahu hotel.” Few coupon sites have a search function; you just have to sign up for the alerts and wait. Further, sites might offer hotel rooms “from $99,” yet no matter what combination of dates you enter, all you get back are those from $239. Did they sell out? Am I just picking bad dates? What is the meaning of life? Who knows. But the good news is that all your patience will pay off in savings one way or another -- either through a coupon or your own hard work. And you’ll learn along the way what a real deal is, so you’ll be ready to pounce on it the next time.

Wracking your brain for the perfect stocking-fillers? We've got you covered.

From sentimental pieces like destination-themed scented candles to practical items like travel wallets and journals, these budget-friendly gifts are suitable for your roommate, colleague, best friend, and everyone in between.

Homesick Candles.png

1. Homesick Candles

Recommended by Ann Douglas Lott, Lonely Planet associate editor Starting from $19

I always have a candle burning when I’m home, and Homesick candles are my go-to gift because each scent is personalized to the destination that inspired it – Tulum, Southern California, Virginia and Vancouver, to name a few. They evoke a nostalgia for the places I miss most.

National Park themed socks

2. Swiftwick National Parks Collection

Recommended by Sebastian Modak, Lonely Planet editor-at-large $20

Okay, there’s something a little cliched about giving socks as a holiday gift, but that’s only because it works. Who doesn’t love a quality pair of socks ? Swiftwick’s line combines high performance with very cool designs inspired by more than a dozen of North America’s National Parks. The socks’ moisture-wicking properties, breathability and comfort make them an easy go-to for anything active.

Venmigo's black travel wallet, shown zipped up

3. Vemingo RFID-blocking travel wallet

Recommended by Fionnuala McCarthy, Lonely Planet editorial director $17

Travel wallets are probably not needed so much now, with a digital boarding pass and credit card all that's required to travel, but I’m old-school and always fearful of losing my phone or my battery dying, along with everything to do with our vacation. So I still bring a travel wallet on family holidays and carry everyones' passports, printed boarding cards, health insurance cards, and accommodation addresses.

This one is super-handy , slim but with lots of compartments, and it’s bright, so it can be found easily in your luggage. It's also great for keeping everything together in one place at home, ready for the next trip.

Supergoop! Everyday sun lotion

4. Supergoop! Play Sunscreen (SPF 50)

Recommended by Sasha Brady, Lonely Planet digital editor From $10

This lightweight sunscreen never feels sticky and is packed with all the important stuff like strong protection from UVA, UVB and IRA rays. It's water- and sweat-resistant, making it ideal for hiking, jogging, or swimming — and for people who sweat like crazy through their faces (hello me!). It's ultra-hydrating and leaves your face and body with a non-greasy, matte finish. Best of all, it’s formulated to be reef safe and is a great option for sensitive skin because the ingredients are minimal.

byta-16oz-mug.jpg

6. Byta stainless-steel tumblers

Recommended by Anne Zalatoris, Lonely Planet lead account manager $14.50

Byta's 16oz tumbler is the perfect size for water, coffee or even outdoor cocktails on the go — high quality, cute and sustainable, it fits perfectly in cup holders and keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. (Ice doesn't even melt!) Pair it with one of the brand's stainless steel straws, and customize it with your name or a phrase. (If you need something bigger, the 30oz version is great for hot yoga and hiking.)

Moleskine's Cahiers notebook in bright poppy red

7. Moleskine Cahiers journals

Recommended by Sarah Stocking, Lonely Planet editor $22

These Moleskine notebooks have been my go-to journals for a lifetime of trips. The XL version is thin and lightweight, so I take a couple if it’s a very long trip, but I tend to find one works just about right no matter what. They also look great on my shelf, and I'm a sucker for the snazzy colors.

Jerry Q Art's travel watercolor set, open to show its 18 paints

8. Jerry Q Art watercolor pocket set

Recommended by Sarah Stocking, Lonely Planet editor $14

Elevate your journaling with a compact, travel-friendly paint set — this tin is the perfect size to stow away and add a little color to your writing. It also comes with a water brush, so you won't spill if painting in transit.

Welly's Bravery Bandages kit, in a yellow tin with colorful lines around the label

9. Welly adventure kits

Recommended by Sarah Stocking, Lonely Planet editor From $8

These small first aid kits are amazing: they pack everything you might need into a tin so tiny it slides into any bag. I want one for my mom kit, one for my girls’ getaways, one for hiking – in short, I want them all.

Here's the thing about a first aid kit: you never know when you're going to need one, but when you do, you really do. My first time out backpacking in Thailand, my travel companion and I realized our packs were far too heavy and purged our giant first-aid kits immediately upon arrival. Don’t let this happen to you. (They’re also the perfect little stocking-stuffer.)

BAGGU's small reusable shopping bags in a variety of colorful prints

10. Baggu reusable bags

These reusable bags have been a staple in my luggage since my New York City aunt introduced them to me 20-odd years ago – she would stash them in her handbag so she always had a shopping bag, just in case. My grandmother and I thought it was genius, and they've traveled with me ever since. Sure, there are other brands, but Baggu is the most reliable, plus they’re easy to clean and come in all kinds of sizes and colors. No more plastic shopping bags for me!
