Stonehenge tours from Bath

Travel to stonehenge from bath.

Stonehenge, like Bath, is one of the big West Country sights, and it is possible to combine the ancient monument and the Georgian city. The distance between Stonehenge and Bath is 35 miles by road, and it takes around an hour to drive between the two sights. If you’re staying in Bath you can join a Stonehenge bus tour for a day trip, or travel independently by public transport – more details of this below. As Stonehenge is close to several other interesting places, like the attractive town of Salisbury and the ruined hill fort Old Sarum, it’s also worth considering staying overnight in the area and exploring it further, if you have the time.

About Stonehenge

The ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is one of the most famous sights in Britain, and one of the most mysterious. There are plenty of theories as to the monument’s function and history, but very little is known for certain.

Stonehenge lies on a spot where a series of circular monuments were constructed between 3000BC and 1600BC. Originally made of earth and wood, the stones which now stand in a circle, aligned with the solstice rising sun, were brought from various locations: sarsens from the Marlborough Downs (these are the large standing stones in an outer ring, connected by lintels), and bluestones brought all the way from Wales; a considerable achievement. Stonehenge is part of a fascinating wider landscape, including various burial mounds, Neolithic long barrows, an earthwork of unknown purpose and Woodhenge, also oriented to the solstice sunrise.

Stonehenge is managed by English Heritage and is surrounded by land owned by the National Trust . Members of both these organisations are admitted free.  All visitors must book timed tickets in advance from English Heritage .

The site endures huge visitor numbers, and the commercialisation of the attraction, with a new visitor centre, does not please everyone. Visitors may only walk within the stone circle by special advance permission (and even then they may not touch the stones), and in bad weather it may not be possible to use the walkway around the site.

Bath to Stonehenge by public transport

Travel by public transport from Bath to Stonehenge begins with a train journey from Bath to Salisbury railway station, which is an hour’s by train from Bath on services heading towards Portsmouth Harbour. From Salisbury a special bus service, the Stonehenge Tour Bus, runs to the monument, with a route also including Old Sarum. Allowing for the change between train and bus, the journey from Bath to Stonehenge would usually take around two hours. Although travelling there and back in one day means a lot of travel time, taking this public transport option does allow visitors the chance to spend some time in Salisbury as well.

For visitors looking for a more time-efficient excursion but who are staying in Bath without a car, or who prefer not to drive, it’s possible to book special coach or mini-bus trips from Bath to Stonehenge.

Stonehenge coach tours from Bath

A number of different options for Stonehenge bus tours are available from different companies: a straightforward coach trip to Stonehenge and back, a guided tour including a drive through scenic villages, or a full day out with at least one other stop, such as the pretty village of Lacock . Obviously prices vary considerably according to what type of Stonehenge trip you choose.

Check whether entrance to Stonehenge is included in the tour price; usually you are expected to buy your own ticket on arrival, though there may be a discounted admission price for tour customers. Entrance to the monument is free to English Heritage or National Trust members. It’s advisable to book your tour in advance online, by telephone, online or in Bath Tourist Information Office (by the Abbey). The tours listed depart from the centre of Bath, close to the Abbey. Visitors should check the latest details with the companies below. There are often private tour options available if you are interested in more flexible, private or personalised travel.

Stonehenge Tour – Scarper Tours – Scarper Tours offer daily tours from Bath to Stonehenge. Theirs is a four-hour scenic trip departing from Terrace Walk in Bath, with two hours at the monment. They offer all-inclusive tickets, but offer partial refunds covering admission fees toNational Trust/English Heritage members.

Stonehenge, Avebury and Lacock – Mad Max Tours – Mad Max tours offer a variety of scenic tours including a full-day bus tour which visits Stonehenge and also Avebury and the National Trust village of Lacock. The tour leaves Bath at 8:30am most days of the year, leaving from North Parade. They also operate tours of the Cotswolds, and more expensive ‘special access’ evening trips to Stonehenge.  If you have the time to spare, this is a good way to see more of the area.

Stonehenge Guided Tours –  As well as full-day tours from London to Bath and Stonehenge, Stonehenge Guided Tours also offer half-day tours from Bath visiting Stonehenge, Woodhenge and Lacock.

Stanton Drew Stone Circle – an alternative

No-one would claim it is as dramatic as Stonehenge, but if you want to experience a stone circle up close, away from the tourist crowds, then Stanton Drew makes an interesting alternative destination. The stone circles are among fields in a rural setting, and you might find yourself the only visitor. A further group of three stones is situated in the garden of a village pub, the Druid’s Arms. The site is to the west of Bath, near Chew Valley Lake.

Stay near Stonehenge

If you’re planning a touring itinerary or are flexible in your travel arrangements, you may find it worthwhile to stay near the stone circle overnight. This would be convenient for early or late visits to the stones, and would mean you could explore the surrounding area. One of the nearest places to stay is the Holiday Inn Salisbury-Stonehenge , or for a more characterful countryside stay with a garden, Mill House B&B in the village of Berwick St James is a good alternative. For travellers using public transport the most practical option would probably be to spend the night in Salisbury and travel by bus to Stonehenge.

A Cotswolds Village, Bath and Stonehenge

Stonehenge tour, the world famous ancient stone circle. this 5000 year old site is a "must see" and arguably one of the world's most important prehistoric sites, certainly one of britain's most popular attractions..

Join our small group Stonehenge tour from London in 2024 to discover this mysterious prehistoric stone circle, standing proud on Salisbury Plain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stonehenge is the most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world, whose "how's", "what's" and "why's" are still being explored today. Stonehenge has been held sacred for centuries, as a place of spiritual importance for Pagans and Druids, who still celebrate it today. But what was it built for, and how? Come and share your theories, and learn what we already know from decades of research into who carried these stones as far as 150 miles, weighing up to 30 tons, and aligned them with perfect precision with the rising and setting sun of the summer and winter solstices. It's a remarkable feat of ancient engineering, and has to be seen to be believed!

England's most beautiful city? With stunning Georgian architecture and a history stretching back 3000 years, it's clear to see why Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage City, well worth a visit on any trip to England.

We will see the best of Bath. Bath's finest streets - including the famous Royal Crescent - resplendent in their glorious Georgian style, before you have the chance to explore the centre on foot (armed with a map and some recommendations from your guide). Visit Bath Abbey with its impressive vaulted ceiling, or explore the Roman Baths museum (entry optional), stroll along the beautiful River Avon with view of the majestic Pulteney Bridge or just soak in the atmosphere of one of England's most sophisticated cities. Join us on a walking tour to learn more about the history and culture of Bath, and perhaps have a taste of the spring water. Appreciate the city that inspired Jane Austen & Dickens and see why Bath has been one of the most popular destinations for the upper classes for hundreds of years.

Castle Combe - charming Cotswolds village

One of the cotswolds' most beautiful villages is castle combe. situated on the southern edge of the cotswolds just 12 miles from bath, castle combe has many times been rated the "prettiest village in england"..

Dating back to the 13th century and once a weaving town, the village sits in the lush green valley of the River Bybrook. Only accessible on some of the local backroads, no big bus tours of the Cotswolds from London can visit so we will certainly be avoiding the crowds. Lined with characterful old houses and cottages built in the rich brown local Cotswolds stone, enjoy the peace and tranquillity and opportunity to take some beautiful photographs depicting typical Cotswolds life. Wander down the quiet main street, take a look inside the 13th century St Andrew's Church, perhaps buy some of the homemade cakes and sweets locals sell from outside their homes, Castle Combe is a must visit on any tour of the southern Cotswolds from London.

** Please note that due to reduced daylight hours this tour only operates April - October. Our best selling signature tour - Stonehenge, Bath & a Secret Place runs all year round to almost the same itinerary. See https://theenglishbus.com/tour/bath-stonehenge-and-a-secret-place **

Our first pick up is on the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street, SE1 7PB. This is the bus pick up and drop off point for the London Eye (see departure point page here) This is in the Waterloo area and a short walk from both Waterloo and Westminster Stations. Your bus and guide will normally arrive 5-10 minutes before departure. Look out for a small white Mercedes Benz bus with “The English Bus” written on the side. A prompt departure is essential so please arrive in plenty of time.

Outside the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London Victoria, at 2 Bridge Place, SW1V 1QA (see departure point page here) This is a very short walk from Victoria Station. Take exit 1 from the main railway station and turn right. Please be waiting outside the hotel, we will stop to pick you up as close to the hotel entrance as we can.

After we have picked everyone up, and you are sat comfortably, your driver/guide will introduce themselves, and explain the plan for your day. Your guide will provide full commentary on our interesting route out of London, passing some major landmarks on our way. We will make a quick bathroom/coffee/snack stop on request - you are more than welcome to eat and drink on the bus as we travel

Our first stop is the magnificent prehistoric site of Stonehenge. Dating back over 5000 years, this is likely to be the oldest man made site that you will ever visit in your lifetime.

Before your arrival, your guide will discuss some of the facts & theories surrounding this world famous mysterious stone circle in preparation for our arrival, so you have a good understanding of what you’re seeing.

There’ll be plenty of time to take some wonderful pictures, listen to the audio-guide and visit the gift shop, cafe and the new visitor centre. Your guide will be very interested to hear your thoughts, will answer questions about Stonehenge and tell you some of the more weird and wonderful stories you wouldn't otherwise have heard.

Following your visit to Stonehenge, we'll begin making our way through the countryside to the UNESCO world heritage city of Bath. We’ll drive through some quintessential English villages and take back roads to give you a taste of real rural England. You will get some fantastic views of the countryside. Your guide will point out traditional English houses and talk about English country life.

On arrival we’ll drop you off in Bath city centre with some recommendations of places to eat and drink and sights to see. Perhaps you might choose a typical English pub or cafe, or a quick and tasty pasty - a special type of local pie, perhaps washed down with a glass of famous local cider? Your guide will be on hand to advise what might be best for you. We'll also provide a handy map of Bath for you too.

After lunch your guide will offer you an optional guided walking tour of Bath, focusing on the history and highlights of the city, and the different incarnations of the baths through the ages - from the Celts, the Romans, the Georgians to the present day. You’ll have plenty of free time to explore the city that inspired Charles Dickens and Jane Austen at your leisure before a panoramic driving tour on our route out to show you Bath’s finest streets including the best of all - The Royal Crescent.

Leaving the beautiful city of Bath behind, we'll head north east through the rolling hills of Somerset. Passing through some more quintessential English villages and into the southern Cotswolds - probably England's best known area of countryside we'll arrive in Castle Combe - around 35 minutes after leaving the city of Bath.

** Please note that we may operate this tour in reverse and visit Castle Combe at the start of the day, after our visits to Stonehenge and Bath - this is dependant on traffic and Stonehenge operating hours. Either way we will still spend the same amount of time in the Cotswolds**

Meandering along some scenic tree and hedgerow lined back routes beyond Bath, we arrive in the stunning village of Castle Combe. Before our arrival, your guide will tell you all about the village and what there is to see and do, before we drop of off to explore on foot. Wander down the charming main street admiring the Cotswolds beauty, perhaps stop for a cup of tea and a scone, or a drink in one of the historic pubs. Visit Castle Combe's 13th century church and get some beautiful pictures of one of England's most beautiful villages.

Dependent on traffic, we’ll get back to London between approximately 8.00pm - 8.30pm. Your guide will plan the route into London based on where you all want to go, and will endeavour to get you as close as possible to your destination. If there is a more convenient point to depart the tour along our route through London then we can certainly make a stop for you. We will also always return to the areas you started the tour, if this is your best option. Speak with your guide so they can make sure you know exactly how to get to where you need to get to - they can advise where the best place to depart the tour would be.

We may alter the order of the day depending on traffic/weather/special events in order to maximise your enjoyment of the day. Due to shorter daylight hours in the Winter, this tour runs mid March - late October. Our Bath, Stonehenge and a Secret Place tour is available all year round however, and is not affected by the shorter daylight hours. See HERE for details.

How to get to Stonehenge from Bath in 2024 – best and easiest ways to visit

If you’re based in the south west of England and looking for a day trip out of the city of Bath then you might well be wondering about ticking off the wonder that is Stonehenge from your bucket list.

I am a huge fan of the stone circle and visit whenever I can. The best bit is that if you’re based in Bath then it’s actually quite close and can be done easily in a day.

Whether you have your own car, want someone to take you or if you’re looking to get around on your own on public transport this post will guide you through the options for how to get to Stonehenge from Bath in 2024.

Are you ready to explore one of England’s most epic ancient sites? Let’s go!

A note from the writer: Hey! I’m Kirsty and I’m probably Stonehenge’s biggest fan and expert on visiting – I’ve been so many times over the past few years!

I love encouraging people to come and see and really make the most out of their visit. Shout (or comment below) if you have any questions about visiting Stonehenge and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Don’t forget your tickets!

It’s advisable to get your Stonehenge tickets in advance so if your tickets aren’t included in how you’re getting there from Bath you can get them here.

Table of Contents

How far is stonehenge from bath.

Stonehenge is only around 35 miles away from Bath so it’s a fairly close day out and it makes an excellent trip away from the city if you’re based there.

how to get to stonehenge from Bath

Getting to Stonehenge from Bath, England – what’s the best way?

For ease and ability to explore more of England’s amazing countryside around here then a car is definitely best. But thankfully it’s not the only option you have.

If you don’t have your own transport then the next best way to get to Stonehenge from Bath is definitely by an organised tour . It’s easy, often takes in some other sights and can be a cost effective way of doing the day trip.

Is it easier to go to Stonehenge from Bath or from London?

One question you might have if you’re traveling around England is whether to do your Stonehenge trip from London or from Bath. The former definitely has a lot of options and it’s also fairly easy to get to Stonehenge from London like from Bath.

It is farther to Stonehenge from London than it is from Bath and if you’re returning to the capital after a day trip then you might find traffic is heavy and can ruin any evening plans you might have.

It really depends on what your method of transport is and your other plans in the area as to which one you should go from.

Organised Tours to Stonehenge from Bath

If you’re looking for an easy way to get to Stonehenge from Bath then an organised tour could be the option for you. While independent travelers might hate the idea (I know I have in the past) it’s really one of the easiest ways to do it.

Always check how much time you’ll have to visit Stonehenge when you’re on one of these tours. It’s a bucket list trip and so you don’t want it to be ruined by being in a rush!

Often these tours are actually good value for money as well as they’ll include entrance. Going by public transport can add up as you’ll see!

Many of these tours will include some other nearby sites so you can make the most of your day exploring the English countryside. Sometimes you’ll visit Avebury , another ancient England site or perhaps exploring some of the Cotswolds.

Check these options out:

  • Stonehenge, Avebury & Cotswolds – small guided tour from Bath
  • Private half day tour to Stonehenge

How to get to Stonehenge from Bath by Public Transport

If you’re looking to get to Stonehenge from Bath under your own steam and using public transport then I recommend getting the train to the nearby city of Salisbury and the direct bus to the stones from there.

Train to Stonehenge from Bath

The nearest train station to Stonehenge is the city of Salisbury (a lovely place to spend a few hours in its own right) and there are plenty of trains that will take you to there from Bath.

If you choose a direct train then it takes around an hour to get there. Ticket prices can be from £22 if you get an off peak return or more if you need more flexibility. Check out Trainline which is my go to booking site to see times and book tickets.

From Salisbury you’ll need to get a bus onward to Stonehenge. Look for the direct bus called The Stonehenge Tour .

The buses run every hour and it costs around £18.50 (2024 prices) for an adult return. This doesn’t include entrance tickets although you can also buy a ticket that includes these.

Bus from Bath to Stonehenge

There are no direct public transport buses from Bath to Stonehenge. (although you may wish to look at the tour buses that go there – see below)

If you wanted to do the trip by bus you’d want to get the D1 bus to Warminster and then the 24 to Salisbury where you’d then find the Stonehenge Tour bus.

I don’t recommend this way of getting from Bath to Stonehenge as it takes a much longer time to get there. If you have a senior bus pass then I guess it can make the trip free but definitely check times to ensure you can do the return journey!

Train and connecting bus is a much better option in my opinion.

Getting to Stonehenge from Bath by car

If you’ve hired a car for your UK trip , or have your own transport for your trip to Stonehenge from Bath then it’s a fairly easy journey.

It’s around 1 – 1.5 hours drive away and of course takes you direct to the stone circle itself (or at least the car park). You could even choose to see Stonehenge for free and spend more time exploring some of Stonehenge’s nearby sites if you wanted to.

The easiest route stays on the main A roads. The road you’ll need is the A36 south towards Deptford. Once there you’ll go along the A303 towards Stonehenge and follow the signs for the car parks. Parking is free if you’re visiting the stones.

Getting from Bath to Stonehenge – conclusion

I hope this article has helped you to figure out the best way for getting to Stonehenge from the city of Bath. As you can see, there are a few options but it can certainly be an easy trip.

While I adore Bath, having a day out from the city is also a welcome change and what better thing to do than explore the amazing Stonehenge!

If you need a SIM for use in the UK I recommend GiffGaff which you can get and set up before traveling.

Many countries don’t need a visa for visiting England as tourists (USA, Canada, Aus, NZ and Europe) – it’s always best to check first though .

The English Bus – Stonehenge, Bath & A Secret Place

Ticket pricing does not include food or Stonehenge tickets. You can buy entry tickets to Stonehenge on-site for about 20 to 25 pounds (around $25 to $31) depending on the time of the year, or you can buy them online in advance for a slight discount.
