Business travel survives the Zoom era, as leaders jump back on flights

Corporate travel is slowly but surely making a comeback.

It turns out that jet-setting on the company dime has eternal appeal. Business trips can conjure up images of fancy first-class tickets to major cities or staying at a Hilton in a small town about 20 minutes from the airport. Either way, it seems that the pandemic didn’t kill the corporate travel bug.

The brakes on business trips were first pulled when COVID-19 hit, as lockdowns and international travel restrictions were implemented. Zoom took off while planes stalled, as the video-conferencing company went from 10 million daily meeting participants in December 2019 to 300 million a few months later in April 2020.

As the lockdown lifted, some itched to vacation again (surging to the point that the term “revenge travel” was coined), but corporate travel was slow to get its feet off the ground. Its sluggish return made some question if business trips were at the end of an era. Perhaps Zoom and remote work meant that there was no longer a need to leave the house, much less the country, to really connect with others.

“Businesses aren’t going to support nonessential travel if the work being proposed can be done virtually,” Brian Bloom, Korn Ferry’s vice president of global benefits and mobility operations, said in 2021 . And while bosses were looking to cut costs by eliminating travel, workers weren’t looking to risk their health either. In 2021, only one-quarter of those over 55 were comfortable traveling for work even after being vaccinated, according to an IBM survey of 15,000 global participants.

But years later, it seems as if corporate demand hasn’t died off, it just was dozing off for a bit. And the airlines confirmed as much. Alaska Air reported a return to pre-pandemic levels of business travel, as sales for corporate accounts soared by 22% in the first quarter. Delta and United each reported 14% increases in first-quarter revenue, with a United executive noting that the company notched nine of its top 10 corporate booking days in its history this year. That’s coming off of the rebound in 2023 , as air travel rose to 94% of 2019 levels, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that business travel isn’t still going through growing pains . A 2023 report from Deloitte found that while recovery is occurring, the trend “likely faces a limited upside” in part due to the cost of flying and sustainability mandates.

Still, the return of corporate travel is occurring in the background of a years-long campaign to go back to pre-pandemic ways of work, as big names in tech and finance push for a fully in-person week. One of the major talking points for those that suggested back to office work was that it would create better connections , a similar talking point that crops up when it comes to the merits of traveling to meet with clients in-person.

It seems as if the mindset is slowly gaining traction, as a 2023 study from Global Business Travel Association projected spending on business travel will surpass pre-pandemic levels of $1.4 trillion this year and balloon to nearly $1.8 trillion by 2027. After Omicron and other surges, global business travel began to find its footing again in 2022, according to the trade group.

“The headwinds that were anticipated to impact the rebound of global business travel over the past year didn’t materialize and that is good news,” Suzanne Neufang, Global Business Travel Associate’s CEO said in a statement last year to Fortune’s Chris Morris. “This latest forecast now indicates an accelerated return to pre-pandemic spending levels sooner than anticipated as well as growth ahead in the coming years.”

As the ever-looming recession remains unannounced and executives continue to extol the benefits of in-person work, the company card has started to thaw. It appears as if the floodgates, or air gates, are beginning to open up again.

For those who choose to ignore policy guidelines, monitoring traveler behavior is key. When you add your credit card data to the travel reservation data CWT already captures in the same business travel reporting tool, you can identify non-compliant expenses or bookings quickly and easily.

In addition to standard business travel reporting, CWT AnalytIQs provides rich business intelligence capabilities:

  • Custom queries to allow you to get exactly the right business travel reporting information for your organization’s key stakeholders
  • Built-in benchmarking helps you know how your travel program stacks up to others.
  • Analysis of your business travel reporting data lets us identify recommended actions you can take to improve your results.
  • Graphic dashboards and charts—with drill-through clicks to the detailed data behind them—help you easily understand your data and share it with stakeholders.

With CWT AnalytIQs , you have more power than ever to manage your travel program effectively, monitor your travelers and identify ways to save even more money.

Near real-time business travel reporting

CWT sends data to our business travel reporting system as each booking is made, so you get near real-time access to your travel spend. This helps you and your organization identify non-compliant bookings as well as provides the most current data possible to our traveler tracking services. When combined with our automated messaging services, you can instantly take action when needed to improve compliance and alert travelers to helpful or important information.

Share reporting on corporate travel easily

Once you’ve reviewed your company’s data, you’ll want to share it with your key stakeholders to gather support for your plans. CWT AnalytIQs makes that easy, too. Once you’ve accessed the data you need, and created the specific charts and visuals you need, it’s simple to export your business travel reporting into a shareable format and even schedule those to send automatically at a time of your choosing.

Master your data to advance your travel program

CWT AnalytIQs not only gives you accurate overview reporting on corporate travel spending, it also helps you advance your company’s specific goals with detailed analysis on specific areas of expenditure. For example:

  • See where your travelers spend most of their corporate travel budget – which categories and even which suppliers.
  • Measure your travel spending against budget targets, in near real-time
  • Benchmark your travel program performance against all CWT clients or just your peers.
  • Keep a close eye on the number of bookings being made in certain cities, countries or continents and create an effective supplier strategy based on these insights
  • Monitor average airfares and hotel rates to spot potential savings opportunities by shifting supplier strategy.
  • Quickly draw informed conclusions based on accurate, near real-time insights.
  • Tailored recommended actions based on your specific corporate travel reporting data to help you support your company’s cost containment initiatives.

Take your corporate travel reporting to the next level.

5 Apps to Make Business Travel a Breeze

Let’s face it, for the constant traveller, business travel can often feel more stressful than enjoyable. From rescheduled flights and impossibly long taxi lines, to those frustrating ‘lost in translation’ moments in a foreign country – when you are on the move, there are many elements that can turn a simple business trip into a logistics or safety nightmare.

Whilst some elements will always be outside our control, planning can go a long way towards reducing the stress of travel logistics gone wrong.  Here’s five of the best business apps to arm you for a successful trip:

If you’ve ever found yourself searching through your handbag in a desperate attempt to find your flight details, then you’re probably one of those people who have also pleaded to the app gods for a better, more efficient system to organise your travel itinerary. Cue Tripit, riding in on a white horse.

Tripit stores all your flight details in the one app – hotels, flights, car rentals, restaurant confirmations – you name it. But it’s also so much more than a simple storage system. If there’s any changes to your flight, you get immediately notified. You can also share your entire itinerary with colleagues and friends so they can stay up to date with your travels, making coffee in a foreign city far easier. Plus, the app notifies you if your favourite seat becomes available, a sure winner for any flyer who loves a little extra legroom (who doesn’t!).

As companies grow these days, so too does the number of travelling employees. It’s a pretty special thing to get paid to visit the Big Apple or the Eiffel Tower – but for those workers in the mining, energy, oil, and gas sectors – the destinations are usually much more remote and isolated , exposing them to higher risk. And SafetyIQ is the tool that keeps you safe.

In a nutshell, SafetyIQ is a journey management app that does one thing really well – and that’s alleviating stress. It’s a system where employees can share their travel status with their bosses. Travellers can create their own journeys, select their mode of transport, create checkpoints, and indicate the time of their journey, giving management some peace of mind with the knowledge that they will be alerted if anything has gone wrong. Equally, it gives employees the freedom to spend their days off enjoying the sites, not chasing up phone calls from their worried bosses. It’s a win-win scenario!

  • XE Currency

Say goodbye to attempting to do high school maths in your head in your endeavour to order a coffee. XE is your new bff when it comes to currency conversion. It has a bunch of business-oriented features, but where it really gives you an instant peace of mind is through the simple fact that it can convert every world currency, instantly. It also functions offline, which provides instant relief for those travellers in a place with limited connectivity.

For those unsure whether today is a good day to make the currency exchange, XE provides historic currency charts so you can gage whether the current rate is sitting at a high or low, making sure you stretch your work travel budget in the best way.

Gate Guru is the ultimate slashie, offering a bunch of features that are sure to help you stress less, especially in a foreign airport. It hosts your detailed itinerary and keeps you updated about flight changes or delays in real time. But the real winner with Gate Guru is how it provides a wealth of airport information – from amenity information, to weather forecasts, and even little airport tips like where the best place to eat is. You’ll know what you’re having for lunch before you’ve even landed.

You can also use the app to book discounted hire cars so the journey from airport to business locale is seamless, while the airport amenity list should help direct you to the nearest airport lounge or business centre should you have some urgent tasks to check off.

  • Google Trips

Google Trips has just landed on our smartphones, giving other travel apps a run for their money. In addition to centralising and storing your travel itinerary (even in offline mode), it provides a list of the most popular sightseeing destinations, restaurants, and day plans. Your days off are about to get a whole lot easier.

Bonus app:  Duolingo

Bonjour! Hola! Guten Tag! Ciao! Ohayo! Prepare to look like a real local with Duolingo – your personal language teacher that fits right into your pocket. For those business travellers looking to build client relationships, or simply navigate from A to B, Duolingo is the perfect tool to help you communicate.

More like a game than a lesson at school, Duolingo teaches you to speak, read, listen, and write in a bunch of languages (specifically 23), including Spanish, French, German, Italian, and even Hungarian!

It’ll even teach you the phrases that you’ll actually use, such as “where are the croissants?” and “democracy is the dictatorship of the majority” (yes, these are actual phrases).

What Is The Very Light Aircraft With The Longest Range?

  • Cirrus SR22 G6 offers the longest operational range in the very light jet category.
  • The aircraft features enhanced aerodynamics & fuel efficiency for faster flight.
  • The Cirrus IQ system ensures efficient maintenance tracking & connectivity for pilots.

Business jets come in all shapes and sizes. From being as small as carrying two people to as large as accommodating more than a hundred elite passengers. One of the primary attributes of business jets is its operational range. The range determines how far the aircraft can go with partial or full payload without having to stop for refueling.

How is the weight category defined?

In the business aircraft industry, light jets are classified as having a Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW) of up to 20,000 lbs (9,090 kg). While there is no specific definition of a very light jet, aircraft with an MTOW of up to 10,000 lb (4,545 kg) can be considered as one. According to Private Jet Card Comparisons ,

There isnt an official segmentation for very light jets, although many classify the type as having under 10,000 pounds maximum takeoff weight. The industrys light jet definition includes all business jets up to 20,000 pounds maximum takeoff weight.

For the purpose of this article, we look at the longest-range business aircraft in the very light category.

Cirrus SR22 G6

Maximum operational range: 1,021 nm (1,174 miles, 1,879 km).

  • Category: Very light jet
  • Useful load: 1,246 lbs (2,741 kg
  • Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW): 3,600 lbs (1,637 kg).
  • Maximum operating altitude: 25,000 ft (8,300 m)
  • Maximum cruise speed: 213 knots (245 mph, 392 km/h)
  • Engine power: 315 horsepower

In the very light business aircraft category, the Cirrus SR22 G6 offers the maximum operational range. The SR22 G series was first revealed in January 2022, featuring a number of upgrades to the original SR22 design. The manufacturer, Cirrus Aircraft, refined the aircraft design for reduced drag, thereby increasing fuel efficiency.

As one of the highest-selling single-engine piston aircraft, Cirrus aircraft are known for their performance, efficiency, and customer convenience. At the launch of the new aircraft, the Director of the SR Series Product Line at Cirrus Aircraft , Ivy Mclver, expressed his enthusiasm about the performance of the new aircraft by stating,

The model year 2022 G6 SR is refreshed to seamlessly sync with your life taking you further, keeping you connected and distinguishing your style in the air and on the ramp. This latest update to the G6 embodies our passion for continued innovation and commitment to design. We are excited to continue introducing more people to personal aviation and empowering their Cirrus Life story.

The aircraft features sleeker wing and tail surfaces that minimize aerodynamic drag in flight and increase fuel efficiency. It also features improved wheel pants, which increase the aircraft’s true speed by up to 9 knots. These major improvements in the G6 SR version minimize the aircraft’s specific fuel consumption (SFC) and result in faster flight segments.

Cirrus Unveils New, High-Tech G7 In Major Update To SR Series

The cirrus iq.

The Cirrus SR G6 features the Cirrus IQ system, an advanced aircraft insight that enhances connectivity through controlled channels and a state-of-the-art network. The Cirrus IQ comes with an improved status screen, enabling aircraft data to be displayed with current operational status, inspection intervals, and warranty expiration.

According to Cirrus Aircraft, some of the new and unique features of the Cirrus IQ are Maintenance Minder, My Trips, and The Warranty, which keep the aircraft in check during operation and off-wing time.

Maintenance Minder

The system tracks inspection data of the aircraft and provides notifications about the forthcoming inspections and maintenance tasks. During flights, the flight hour meter automatically updates the system and is displayed through progress bars and countdown timers. Inspection cards are also automatically updated to alert the crew of outstanding or upcoming tasks.

The feature is used to automatically log every flight and key trip statistics from all flights. As one of the newest features of the system, released in February 2022, the system also keeps track of the achievements earned during flight.

The Warranty

The warranty features show the flight hours, flight cycles, and date limits for various warranty coverages from nose to tail. The unique feature provides an advanced method of keeping track of all individual warranties so operators can plan their aircraft operations accordingly.

The exterior paint schemes

The Cirrus SR G6 aircraft offers a variety of exterior paint schemes, which the manufacturer has introduced through the Cirrus Xi Design team in partnership with Sherwin Williams Aerospace. Through collaboration, a new formulation of aircraft paint was designed with eight new exterior paint colors. Cirrus Aircraft enhances color definition, flexibility, and durability.
