Canoeing the Caddo River – Fun Floats for the Whole Family
June 4, 2020
Arkansas is home to several rivers with opportunities that will delight outdoor lovers. Most Arkansans are familiar with the Buffalo National River and the Spring River in the north part of the state as waterways for canoeing and kayaking. But toward the southwest region, the Caddo River flows out of the Ouachita Mountains, bringing with it plenty of recreation for floating and fishing.
The most popular section of this 84-mile river runs from Caddo Gap south to Glenwood where the waters are gentle enough for families and novice paddlers with a few Class I and II rapids thrown in for fun. The river also offers moderate moving waters just right for even the most novice paddler.
From Glenwood to Amity, the Caddo River runs a little slower and is a prime spot for fishing. Visitors will want to bring along the rod and reel for a chance to catch smallmouth and spotted bass, both in abundance in the 40 miles north of De Gray Lake. Stream-running walleye are plentiful and just above the lake, anglers will find white and hybrid striped bass in the early spring.
The Caddo offers a wide range of outdoor experiences. Float and fishing outfitters and campgrounds all along the river are gearing up for the busy season from March through October.
If you’re looking for a great river experience, check out one of these businesses that service the Caddo River area.
Caddo River Camping & Canoe – Glenwood
David and Gayla Claborn are committed to providing you with a fun and safe experience. They open for the season in early March and offer tubes, kayaks, canoes and shuttle services for their guests.
Their two camping areas are located right on the river and can accommodate tents, campers and RVs. Although they do not offer sewer or a dump station, they do have a bathhouse with full plumbing and hot showers. Several cabins, a yurt and a bunkhouse are also available.
Facebook Website
Caddo River Rats Kayak and Tube Rental – Caddo Valley
Caddo River Rats is located in the lower section of the river below the dam on Degray Lake. They offer canoe, kayak, tube and cooler rentals along with shuttle service. The full trip usually takes around three hours, depending on water levels.
Due to their location below the dam, the rental business is at the mercy of water levels to provide a safe and fun float opportunity. Always call or check their Facebook page before heading out. Their season usually runs from mid-May until Labor Day Weekend.

Arrowhead Cabins and Canoe – Caddo Gap
Whether you are looking for a cabin to rent with your hunting buddies or a place to cool off with a float trip in the summer, Arrowhead has you covered. They provide canoes, kayaks and tubes and shuttle service to several areas. Ask, and they will recommend the best course for your needs and skill level.
Arrowhead can accommodate overnight stays in one of their cabins or bunkhouses. They also offer full-service camping with water, sewer and electric hookups for RVs and campers. Tent sites are also available at Arrowhead and Glenwood.
Arrowhead is open year-round but requires advanced reservations.
If you’d like to turn your river trip into a full vacation you may want to check out these Arkansas attractions, all within an hour of Caddo River:

The Stunning Top-Secret Swimming Hole In Arkansas Nobody’s Ever Heard Of
If you live in Arkansas, we bet you've heard of or been to Falls Creek Falls, Walnut Creek, Gunner Pool, or Kings River Falls. After all, they're some of the best swimming holes in the state. But unless you live near Paris, I can guess that you’ve never heard of Big Shoal Creek or Shoal Creek as locals call it. This pretty nature spot in Arkansas is one of her best kept secrets. But now that the cat is out of the bag, we want to share this hidden gem swimming hole with you.
Tucked inside the tiny town of Paris, you'll find a secret spot that not many folks know about. Big Shoal Creek is a small oasis filled with cascading waterfalls as well as pretty swimming holes, and it's perfect for a quick summer day trip in the Ozarks.
The hike to get to this hidden gem is literally 0.1 miles, so it's only a short walk from the parking area on Spring Lake Rd. Or if you have an ORV, you can easily drive right up to it.
If you've driven on Spring Lake Rd in Paris, you might have seen Big Shoal Creek as you travel across the bridge. And if you've never stopped, be sure to do so next time you're in the area. You won't be disappointed.
What I like most about this nature spot is that there are rocky areas along the creek...
...so, if you have kids, there are plenty of places for them to play and wade in the water.
Plus, there is a pretty little cascading waterfall. At only about 5-feet tall, what Big Shoal Falls lacks in height, it makes up for in beauty. Bring your camera as you will want to snap some pics here.
Depending on when you visit, you could have this secret swimming hole to yourself, so you'll want to take full advantage of it.
It's best to visit after a good rainfall, but even if the creek isn't flowing, you can still find a few spots to get your feet wet.
After your visit, chances are, this swimming hole might become your new go-to oasis.
So, did you know about this secret nature spot in Arkansas? Have you been to it? Let us know in the comments below. While in the area, how about you grab a bite to eat at this scenic Arkansas restaurant that's high above the clouds.

Really appreciate Mike giving us a call to give us heads up on inclement weather and gave us chance to rain check or refund. We didn't and had a blast.
Launch point.
I've rented and used there shuttle service many times. Good prices, friendly staff, what else needs to be said. I will continue to used them.
We rented kayaks here and did the 7 mile course on the Caddo river. It was great fun with some class 1-2 rapids. Took about 3.5 hours to do the float. Equipment was clean and well kept up. Office folks were very friendly and knowledgable about the river and conditions. Our driver was very friendly and helpful too. My wife and I have kayaked in lakes and very slow flowing water before, but never faster moving water. The first half mile was a little challenging, but got better after that. Bring along snacks and water, there are no stores along the way.

Caddo River Float – a fun easy float
- May 23, 2019 June 25, 2021
While growing up in southwest Arkansas, floating the Caddo River was a mainstay in spring and early summertime. The most popular route for a Caddo River float is the 10.5 mile stretch of river between Caddo Gap and Glenwood. This float provides fun rapids that get your heart pounding and mixed with long deep pools for a lazy river float. It takes between four and six hours to float, depending on the water level.
Caddo River Float
Beginning high up in the Ouachita Mountains somewhere between Norman and Mena, the Caddo River flows 82 miles before it joins the Ouachita River near Arkadelphia. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Caddo River to create DeGray Lake in Caddo Valley.
The lower portion of the Caddo River is also popular for floating, but it’s more of a lazy river float. It also provides great fishing as smallmouth and spotted bass and sunfish are found to be plentiful.
Click here to learn Arkansas kayak laws, rules, and regulations.
But for those who are looking for a little more white water, the portion between Caddo Gap and Glenwood is the best. Better skilled kayakers who want a challenging float can consider floating Norman to Caddo Gap. However, according to Caddo River Camping & Canoe Rental , this 15-mile stretch of river is only floatable after a day or two of good rainfall. They also do not recommend it for children and inexperienced boaters.
According to Arrowhead Cabin & Canoe , you can expect class I-II rapids most of the time for a Caddo River float.
Caddo River Camping & Canoe Rental has a wonderful website that provides the current river level and a good description of what to expect, letting you know if it is too low or too high.
On my last Caddo River float, the gauge is near Caddo Gap gave a height of between 5.8 and 6 feet. This is an optimal river level for a float between Caddo Gap and Glenwood.
The last time I went, none of the rapids were more than I could handle, and I only scraped on the bottom once. However, I did not have to get out and push the kayak off. I was able to scoot it with my paddle.
There were two rapids that I questioned my ability to handle as I approached them. On the first one, which was a little less than halfway down the river, created a small island with a big tree in the middle. I could tell the river was higher than normal because the water line was high on the tree.
Floating the Ouachita River is another great float in southwest Arkansas.
I watched my sister go before me and paddle into the tree. Then the water pushed her around and down the river. I thought she just didn’t know how to paddle until I got to the rapids. Sure enough, the water pushed me sideways into the tree. But I didn’t navigate it correctly and it swung me around the other way. I ended going down the larger rapid…backwards.
It sounds scary, but it really wasn’t. However, for times like this, I would advise wearing a lifejacket. Because even if you think it’s a lazy river float, you never know what’s ahead.
The second rapid that made my hands sweat was at the very end. It had is a big drop, and I maneuvered without tipping. However, I took on a great deal of water. Fortunately, we were right at the takeout and were able to dump our boats.
Put-in, takeout
The put-in for this float is located on Manfred Road in Caddo Gap, this is known as The Swinging Bridge. The takeout is off of Third Street in Glenwood just south of the Highway 70 bridge. You have to go through a cemetery to get there.
Click here for a good map.
They were extremely nice to work with. And just remember when parking, that they are driving in and out with buses and trailers shuttling boaters. So leave them extra space.
Floating the Caddo River is a great way to experience the Ouachita Mountains. The scenery is gorgeous. It’s mostly wooded river banks with a few homes or vacation rentals dotting the float.

For friends and family, church and scout groups, beginners and experts alike, all will enjoy the Caddo River. The river has several really good swimming holes, and places to fish along the way, but Class I and II rapids are frequent and help do much of the "paddling" for you. In the late summer you may have to do more of the paddling yourself, but generally the Caddo stays a pretty good float. In fact, it's one of the most consistent floating rivers in Arkansas.
Kayaks grow more and more popular every year. They are a great option for kids as they are much easier to handle compared to a canoe.
