Transportation in a Cambodia tour

Go Cambodia Tours favors local transportation alternatives and conventional modes of transportation whenever possible because they typically have less of an ecological impact, help small local businesses, and are far more delightful. You might travel through one of the following methods in Cambodia vacation, based on the holiday you're on:

Take the slow route and experience Cambodia as a courteous cyclo rider guides you through the towns.

The tuk tuk is a popular mode of transportation in Cambodia trip and is ideal for short journeys.

Pedaling, get to discover the Cambodian countryside. Drive through paddy fields while greeting passersby.

Choose homestay is a good option in Cambodia tour package

Our goal is to give visitors a memorable realistic feel during a Cambodia vacation , thus we make an effort to maintain as many distinctive and original accommodations as we can.

Homestay : You may spend time in a homestay if you travel with us to Cambodia.

Spend time with a local family and get a taste of country living. Make new acquaintances, delight in wholesome, home-cooked dishes, and see the rural areas of Cambodia.

Best time to set up a tour in cambodia

In Cambodia, each season has its own benefits and drawbacks. The three distinct seasons in Cambodia's tropical climate are cold, hot, and rainy. The majority of the year in Cambodia is hot and muggy, with highs of 32°C recorded from mid-March to mid-May. During the period of the year, in January, you can experience Cambodia vacation packages in its most pleasant climate principal form. The months of May through October add to the annual total of precipitation, which increases humidity by approximately 80% and makes it uncomfortable for travelers.

Enjoy the culture in 7-day cambodia tours

The friendliness of Cambodians makes it clear that Khmer society predominates in that country. Buddhism had a significant impact on this kingdom's culture, rituals, traditions, and ceremonies. The majority of Cambodians are quite cordial. Because they are aware that you are from a different culture, they will be highly understanding of your cultural spoofing behaviors. Nevertheless, as it brings your endearment to the Cambodian people, the effort to learn their culture is much more valued. The Khmer cultural heritage predominates Cambodian society, which is shown in the friendliness of Cambodians. The history, beliefs, traditions, and manners of this monarchy have also been greatly influenced by Buddhism. Cambodians are typically quite amiable. Since they are aware that you come from a foreign culture, people will be quite understanding of social gaffes. The attempt to comprehend Cambodian society, nonetheless, is far more valued because it helps you be more affectionate to Cambodians.

Greetings in Cambodia

Praying with hands folded, palms in front of heart, and head slightly bowed is the customary method to welcome people. Som Peah is a salutation that expresses respect for other people, particularly those who have more social position. Additionally, shaking hands is popular; keep in mind that the French ruled Cambodia for a while.

Customs in Cambodia

People's social position is far more important than other things in the kingdom system. Cambodians frequently inquire about your personal life. At that point, they would like to determine the rating and the best manner to communicate with you. Similar to other Indochinese nations, the demands of the group come before those of the personal. Public perception also was crucial. Safer to prevent openly demeaning Cambodians.

Try local cuisine is a highlight of Cambodia holiday packages

Grains, noodle bowls, and pan fries are typical in Cambodia, as they are in many other Asian nations. Although Cambodian cuisine draws heavily on Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese cultures, it is typically not as peppery as dishes from its neighbors.

The tasty local food to try on your cambodia tour package

1. Fish Amok

Fish which has been covered in banana leaves and cooked in a curried creamy sauce of turmeric, lemongrass, ginger, and coconut milk. You'll be softened in the mouth with this velvety staple food.

2. Nom Banh Chok

Nom banh chok is a common breakfast dish consisting of rice noodles, green fish sauce, beansprouts, bananas blossoms, cucumbers, and a variety of other vegetables.

3. Lap Khmer

This Khmer delicacy, which isn't really your average chilled salads, is created with finely sliced, seasoned beef that has been gently grilled and is seasoned with lemongrass, shallots, garlic, fish sauce, herbs, and plenty of red chillies.

Must-try dishes in your Cambodia trips

4. Ongkrong Saek Koo

The meal is a stir-fry of beef, basil, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, and a lot of ants, sprinkled with chillies and placed on a mound of rice. It was among the most appetizing insect selections you'll discover on a Cambodian restaurant.

5. Baguettes

Crispy, crunchy baguettes, a holdover from Cambodia's French colonial heritage, are offered at street food vendors and marketplaces and make the perfect, affordable breakfast or snacks.

6. Tropical Fruit

In Cambodia, there are plenty of tropical fruit you can find. For a cool drink, ask a drinking cart to whip you up a fresh and unique juice or smoothie.

7. Iced coffee

The popular iced coffee, sweetened with condensed milk, is a must-try drink in Cambodia. (You can always switch to fresh coconuts to satiate your thirst if the caffeine gets too intense)

Get a souvenir in Cambodia tour

Cambodia has a wide variety of marketplaces, from the enormous Central and Russian Markets in Phnom Penh to the minor market segments. As in most Asian markets, haggling for a great bargain is usual. Krama, a woven cotton scarf, was among the most well-known and distinctive gifts from Cambodia. These versatile clothes, which resemble sarongs, can be used for numerous different things in Khmer life, including washing, sunblock, and bathing. It serves as one of Cambodia's state emblems. It is simple to find it in marketplaces or tourist shops. Local organizations and NGOs have tried to provide skills in fabrics and assist low-income people in getting jobs. Consider buying a traditional item from a social enterprise if you want to bring something from Cambodia home.

Festivals to join in Cambodia tour

Theravada Buddhist rites are the main source of Cambodia's celebrations. Despite their supposed divine aspect, Cambodians usually find a way to make them very entertaining. The following are a few of most significant holidays for you to experience the best Cambodia’s holiday trips:

Water Festival

The three-day event is a major holiday that marks the end of monsoon season and the beginning of harvests. Every November, people from towns all around Cambodia congregate by the river to rejoice, but Phnom Penh's celebrations are by far the greatest. It includes bright boat races, lit-up decorative boats, fireworks, musical performances, and an abundance of foods and beverages.

Khmer New Year (Chaul Chnam Thmey)

The Cambodian New Year is a significant occasion on the Khmer calendar, when individuals engage in ceremonies, enjoy classic games, show kindness to everyone, and celebrate for 3 days. The majority of Cambodians spend the vacation visiting their families.

Pchum Ben (Ancestors Day)

On "Ancestors' Day," Cambodians travel to pagodas with meal, grain, bouquets, and presents to give to the monks as offerings to the hereafter. In Cambodia, superstitions permeate all of the faiths. Choices are made not only to remember lost loved ones but also to prevent the dead from plaguing their lives.

Top 7 must-visit places in Cambodia holiday packages

1. Phnom Penh

Even if the metropolis of Cambodia is tumultuous, there are still peaceful times. Unwind in a riverbank pub, find peace in a nearby monastery, or take in the opulence of the Royal Palace.

2. Battambang

a place to visit on your Cambodia tour

Never underestimate the massive ruins of the once impressive Angkor. This archaeological site is both fascinating and awe-inspiring, with the amusing face of Bayon and the bony branches of Ta Prohm, not to mention the irresistible aura of mighty Angkor Wat.

Kampot's Riverside is a wonderful spot to relax. This small oasis of peace serves as a gateway to the adjacent hills, waterfalls, caves, antiquities, and nature reserves. It boasts a variety of charming homestays and adorable eateries to keep visitors pleasant.

Despite its tiny size, Kratie is an excellent place to settle and unwind for a few nights because it is home to uncommon river-dwelling dolphins, golden sunsets, and a stunning riverbank.

Cambodia Guide: Planning Your Trip

cambodia trip 2022

The remnants of a glorious Khmer empire still enchant visitors to Cambodia—not just the grandeur of the Angkor temples, but also the effervescent joy of a people who shook off a genocide within living memory.

This patchwork of contradictory elements—majesty, hardship, culture, happiness—makes this Southeast Asian country such a compelling place to visit.

Siem Reap and its nearby Angkor temples have put Cambodia on the travel map, but you need to go beyond for the complete experience. Visit the lakeside villages at Tonle Sap, or go on a river cruise to the capital Phnom Penh . Visit Koh Rong’s white sand beaches, Kampot’s farms, and a little-known temple ruin at Banteay Chhmar.

For first-time visitors, Cambodia can be a lot to take in at once: ease your entry by reading the information provided below.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Schedule your visit to Cambodia during the dry season from late November to early April. The cooler weather and lack of mud make a visit to the Angkor temples perfectly pleasurable, and avoids the monsoon season’s floods .
  • Language: Over 90 percent of the local population speak the Khmer language. You’ll find some locals can speak conversational English in the main tourist areas, like Siem Reap, but expect little to none when you go out to the villages.
  • Currency: the local currency is the Cambodian riel (KHR), with its value pegged at 4,000 riel to the US dollar. The greenback is accepted in most tourist spots, though they will only accept new-looking bills.
  • Getting Around: The best way to go places is by hiring the auto-rickshaw called the tuktuk ; they’re even better value if you hire one over the course of several days.
  • Travel Tip: You’ll be pressured to see Angkor Wat’s fabled sunrise. It’s like visiting the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa: any sense of greatness is dissipated by the massive crowds coming to see the same thing. Visit during the early morning or late afternoon, but give sunrise a miss.

Things to Do

Everybody’s heard about Angkor Wat and the Angkor Archaeological Park that surrounds it. But what do you know about Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s biggest lake, which increases size sixfold during the monsoon season? Or the lively restaurant and nightlife scene in the capital Phnom Penh? What if we told you that Cambodia’s white-sand beaches rival Thailand’s, or that the Cardamom Mountains are excellent places to hike and meet elephants in?

Here are the experiences we recommend when you’re planning a trip to Cambodia:

  • Explore the vast Angkor Archaeological Park. This 400-acre park near Siem Reap contains Angkor Wat and a collection of Buddhist and Hindu temples dating back to the 12th century. “Temple fatigue” is a real danger here, with the vast collection of structures contained within; choose from a 10-mile “Small Circuit” that can be seen in the space of a day, or the 16-mile “Grand Circuit” that requires a multiple-day entry pass to cover.
  • Visit the Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh. In the 1970s, torture camps like S-21 in Phnom Penh contributed to the Khmer Rouge-led genocide that killed up to three million people. Now known as the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum , the former school building now stands as a grim reminder of the absolute depths that humans can sink to under the influence of a malign ideology.
  • See Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. Tonle Sap changes with the seasons, expanding from 1,000 sq mi to 6,200 sq mi during the rainy season from June to October. The flooded forests provide a rich breeding ground for over 300 species of fresh water fishes—indeed, the lake provides half of Cambodia’s total fish catch. Located only ten miles north of Siem Reap, Tonle Sap is renowned for its floating villages, where entire communities live off the bounties of the lake.
  • Laze about on a beach. Cambodia’s island beaches are arguably as good as Thailand’s, but with less crowds and more charm. Koh Rong , Cambodia’s second-largest island, offers 27 miles of lightly-developed coastline; a rugged beach destination that’s easily accessible from the mainland, with an affordable set of campsites, bungalows and hostels to stay at while you’re enjoying the place.
  • Go hiking in the Cardamom Mountains. This mountain range near the border with Thailand contains a large chunk of virgin rainforest that’s become an ecosystem for endangered flora and fauna. Hike through these jungles and discover waterfalls, rare plants, and the occasional elephant. Ecotourism projects like the Chi Phat commune go a long way in preserving the local environment, while curating it for tourists.

What to Eat and Drink

Sitting in the shadow of the cuisine of neighboring Thailand, Cambodian cuisine is noted for its lack of heat. But Khmer food is more complex than you’d think: it represents waves of multiple influences, from noodles brought over by the Chinese; bread dishes imported by the French; and curry sauces reflecting Indian sources.

Most dishes throughout the day are eaten with plain white rice, but the meats and vegetables all reflect Cambodia’s unique terroir . Thanks to the abundance of freshwater lakes, rivers and streams, fish is the country’s most important protein. The Khmer also eat beef and pork, all given subtly complex flavors by local herbs and spices like shallots, garlic, galangal and lemongrass.

Where to Stay

Siem Reap, the most common international gateway for tourists to Cambodia, offers a wide range of accommodations ranging from hostels to historic five-star hotels. Make sure to book in advance, particularly if you’re visiting during the high season between December and February.

Beyond Siem Reap and the cities, rural areas and more laid-back towns like Kampot offer homestays for tourists who want to experience local living. “Glamping” is also offered as an option in some community-based tourism sites like Banteay Chhmar .

Getting There

Most international visitors fly in to Cambodia via Siem Reap International Airport , located three miles from Angkor Wat and about five miles from Siem Reap itself . From Siem Reap, you can take minbuses, buses or domestic flights to other parts of the country, including Phnom Penh, Battambang, Kampot and Sihanoukville (the gateway to Koh Rong).

If you’re planning an overland visit from neighboring countries, several border crossings are open for tourists: the Aranyaprethet/Poipet and Trat/Koh Kong crossings bordering Thailand ; and the Moc Bai/Bavet crossing bordering Vietnam.

Most nationalities can enter Cambodia without a visa for up to 30 days; check with the Cambodia Ministry of Tourism for any changes in policy before planning a trip.

Culture and Customs

  • Cover up in Buddhist temples. Despite the influx of Western tourists, Cambodia as a whole remains conservatively Buddhist, and will not brook any disrespect to their temples and monks. This means covering your shoulders and legs when visiting active Buddhist temples , including the Angkor park complex. Tourists wearing “skimpy” clothes will not be allowed to enter.
  • Tipping is optional in Cambodia. Prices in Cambodia don’t include a tip, and tips aren’t expected from tourists. However, given low local wages, any tip will be appreciated, and shows your genuine satisfaction with good service.
  • Don’t visit local orphanages. Cambodia is one of Southeast Asia's least developed and most poverty-stricken countries, and many entrepreneurs have capitalized on foreign charitable impulses to set up orphanages where tourists can volunteer their time . But the “orphans” in these places often still have a living parent; a good number of orphanages are only a cynical tourist cash grab.

Money Saving Tips

  • Stay at a hostel. Not all Cambodian hostels are grimy and stinky; some approach boutique standards without raising the price too high. Hostels aren’t just great for saving on accommodations, they’re also excellent places to meet other tourists, swap tips on the best places to see, and even split costs on transport or food.
  • Hire a tuktuk for more than just one destination. Tuktuks can be found lining up at almost every street corner in Siem Reap. But you don’t have to hire a different tuktuk for every trip. Tuktuk drivers are happy to serve as your personal chauffeurs for your entire visit to Siem Reap, if you can negotiate a reasonable package for yourself. A visit to the Angkor temples might cost $20, and maybe $5 or so for a one-way trip to the airport. Put together a list of places you want to visit, and see if a tuktuk driver can accommodate them all at a price you can live with.
  • Look for free stuff to do. In Phnom Penh, for instance, you can take up free meditation classes at Wat Langka every Monday, Thursday and Saturday evenings at 6pm; and Sunday mornings at 8:30am.
  • Buy a local SIM card for phone and mobile internet use. Cellular phone roaming in Cambodia, as with the rest of Southeast Asia, is just a matter of buying a local SIM card and slapping it into a compatible handset. There are multiple cellular providers in Cambodia to choose from—although Cellcard ’s cheap data packages are popular with tourists, and Smart offers good rates for international long-distance calls. Prepaid SIM cards can be bought at almost every corner store, convenience store, and cellphone store; present your passport to buy one.

Trip of a lifetime!

I cannot say enough positives about Custom Asia Travel! We visited Vietnam in December/January 2023 and had an amazing trip with our 3 teens. The itinerary exceeded our expectations! We travelled to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. We had no issues with any of our transportation around the country - our drivers and guides were always there on time (early, actually), friendly and helpful. The accommodations were excellent and our guides were fantastic (Tanh, Tanh, and Viet - they were awesome!). Every place we stayed put our rooms right next to each other, often adjoining, and the kids’ room always had two twin beds and a cot, while my husband and I had a king bed. This was perfect as our teenagers did not want to share beds, lol! The activities were super fun and appealed to all of us. So many highlights - the kids loved the rice farm tour (riding the water Buffalo elicited the biggest smile we’ve ever seen from our 16 year old!), seeing the caves in Ninh Binh, the cooking class in Hoi An, and Ha Long Bay. I really appreciated that some of our itinerary was focused on less crowded activities - a couple of the temples we saw were practically empty, allowing us to enjoy and experience these beautiful sites on our own. We did a couple of bike rides which were also highlights, such a great way to explore and see the area! Minh was available and responsive while planning the trip and while we were there. I agree with others reviews about whether she ever sleeps! She was able to coordinate our luggage getting dropped off as it did not arrive with us, and contacted one of the hotels about a ring that had been left, and arranged for us to pick it up. She was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful. We truly had a relaxing and stress free trip because of the excellent customer service from Minh and our guides. With only having 12 days to visit we were so grateful to be able to enjoy the travel and know that Minh and her team were there if and when needed. I highly recommend using this company, you will not regret it! Now I am dreaming of how quickly we can make it back!! Thank you thank you to Minh and the team, our trip was unforgettable!

Cambodia - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

With jaw-dropping architectural gems, floating villages, and laid-back island beaches, Cambodia’s tourism industry has grown significantly over the past 10 years.

Grandeur and colonial charm await you in Cambodia. With jaw-dropping architectural gems, including the intricately detailed Angkor temples, floating villages, and laid-back island beaches, Cambodia’s tourism industry has grown significantly over the past 10 years. All the same, many parts of Cambodia remain relatively unexplored by tourists. This small country has an incredibly complex history to discover, along with wonderfully welcoming people to meet. What's holding you back from taking a trip to Cambodia?

Tour Highlights

  • Explore Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument
  • Visit Battambang, a preserved colonial-era town
  • See the richly decorated carvings of Bayon temple
  • Spot a rare Irrawaddy dolphin in Kratie
  • Stare in awe at the Silver Pagoda at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh
  • Experience the nightlife of Pub Street in Siem Reap
  • Learn about the history of Khmer Rouge at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

Travel Tips

  • Despite terrible periods in Cambodia’s history, the country today is a safe place to visit. Stick to the tourist areas as much as possible. When travelling to remote areas, stick to the marked paths to avoid any undiscovered landmines.
  • November to March is the most popular time to visit Cambodia when the weather is not-too-hot and not-too-wet. July to August is shoulder season, and a great time to visit for lush scenery and fewer crowds - if you don’t mind wet weather.
  • While Cambodia’s currency is the Riel, it is far more common for tourists to pay in US dollars. In fact, most prices in shops and restaurants will be quoted in US dollars. However, most hotels and restaurants also accept credit cards.
  • Never touch somebody on the head in Cambodia, as this is considered to be the most sacred part of the body.
  • Do as the locals do and smile! Cambodians are known for always having a smile on their face - reciprocate!

Cambodia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Cambodia before planning your tour to the country .

Backpacking Cambodia: 3 Suggested Itineraries for Your Trip

A blue sky over the ancient buildings of Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Cambodia . Often overshadowed by neighboring Thailand, it’s a country full of warm and friendly people, beautiful coastlines, a lively nightlife, and a growing foodie scene. It’s also one of the cheapest countries in the region.

To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations when I first visited in 2006. Back then, all I knew about Cambodia was its awful history involving the Khmer Rouge and that it was home to the Wonder of the World Angkor Wat .

But I was blown away by the people and their warmth, spirit, and hospitality; the beautiful natural scenery; and the country’s long history. It was wonderful, and I ended up staying weeks longer than I thought I would ( I especially loved Phnom Penh ). I returned often, including spending over a month there when I was writing my first book. (It made for a great base of operations.)

In the last decade or so, Cambodia has grown by leaps and bounds. Sleepy little towns I visited before are now megacities, tourists (especially Russians and Chinese) visit en masse, there are more ATMs (there was exactly one in the country when I first went), and there’s a growing expat and foodie scene.

Cambodia still has problems, but it’s a lot more cosmopolitan today than when I first went. There are a lot more travelers here too, making it a great place to explore as a backpacker or budget traveler as it’s now a little easier to get around.

But what should you do when you visit Cambodia?

How should you plan your trip? Where should you go and where should you stay?

Below are some itineraries that include the best destinations in Cambodia to help you plan your trip. You can follow my suggestions to the letter or mix and match itineraries — whatever you prefer!

What to See and Do in Cambodia: A One-Week Itinerary

The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The main attraction is the Royal Palace. Start there, and don’t miss the beautiful flower gardens and the Silver Pagoda, whose floor is made up of more than 5,000 silver tiles; inside is an emerald-covered Buddha and a diamond-covered Maitreya Buddha. It also has murals around its outer wall that tell the story of the Ramayana.

On the palace grounds are five stupas, with the two largest to the east containing the ashes of King Norodom and King Udung (the two most famous kings of modern Cambodia) and a statue of King Norodom on horseback. (Currently closed due to COVID-19).

After seeing the palace, learn about the country’s tragic, not-too-distant history. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is a former school where the Khmer Rouge interrogated and tortured people in the 1970s. You’ll see rusty beds and torture devices, in sharp contrast to the beautiful trees and lovely jasmine smell in the gardens. Admission is $5 USD for adults and $3 USD for anyone under 18.

Afterward, head to the Killing Fields, about 14 kilometers (9 miles) from Tuol Sleng. Although a visit to Choeung Ek (the best-known site) may not be the most cheerful way to spend an afternoon, it makes for a hallowed and memorable experience, a testament to the dangers of uncontested power. You won’t believe the memorial building in the center that is filled with skulls. Admission is $6 USD; expect to pay around $15 USD for a return-trip tuk-tuk (which you can share with a couple people to split the cost).

(Tip: Visit the museum before heading to the Killing Fields, as it will open your eyes to the atrocities that happened here.)

Where to Stay in Phnom Penh : Mad Monkey – A lovely social hostel with a bar & restaurant, beer garden, and swimming pool. They organize all kinds of events and tours so it’s easy to make friends here.

People visiting one of the many temples in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Also, be sure to check out the Cambodian Living Arts Center, a traditional dance school and performance center where you can watch students in training and see traditional live theater. This is a fun way to spend a couple of hours learning about the artistic traditions of the country. Tickets start from about $25 USD. Sometimes there is a dinner show as well!

Make sure you stroll along Sisowath Quay on the Mekong River. The 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) walkway is busy and full of restaurants, bars, cafés, and shops and makes for the perfect area to soak up the local pace of life.

If you have more time, there’s also the Central Market. Built in 1937, this art-deco ziggurat seems very out of place in Phnom Penh. A huge dome with four wings (it’s super ugly), it’s a wonderful place to seek refuge from the midday sun. You’ll find everything from clothing to electronics to souvenirs here but save your shopping for elsewhere because even when you bargain them down, you’re still paying a hugely inflated price. But wander around, stop for a drink, and take in the scene. Just watch out for pickpockets while you’re here.

Boats floating in the water near Sihanoukville, Cambodia

If you’re looking to soak up some sun, Independence Beach and Otres Beach are probably your best bets. Serendipity Beach used to be a great party spot, but there’s a lot of Chinese development going on now, so I wouldn’t stay there.

Where to Stay in Sihanoukville : Onederz – This hostel is a bit basic but it’s fine for a night before heading over to the islands. It’s cheap, there’s a pool, and it’s close to all the main sights.

A small boat on the beach in Sihanoukville, Cambodia

From Sihanoukville, hop on a boat and take a 45-minute ride to Koh Rong. While you can stay overnight, if you’re pressed for time, you can do it in a day trip (but stay overnight if you can). The beaches here are way better than on the mainland (and a lot less polluted). Snorkeling day trips cost approximately $25 USD and include lunch and equipment; there are PADI-certified schools in the area that offer a variety of different dive trips for one or more days.

If you don’t feel like heading to Koh Rong, you could book motorbike trip to Bokor National Park (as well as longer, multiday trips if you’re interested). There, you can hike through a great rainforest or see the atmospheric ruins of the French aristocracy for whom Bokor was a big drawback in the day. You’ll have some amazing views and find ruins, waterfalls, and temples all around. Motorbike day tours cost around $140 USD.

You could also do a day trip to Kampot and the pepper fields in that area too. Half-day tours cost around $25 USD.

The old temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia

(Note: It’s better to take the night bus so as not to waste a day. You won’t sleep well, but you also won’t lose a day!)

Siem Reap is located on the northeastern side of Tonle Sap Lake and is the main access to Angkor Wat . The center remains a rural old town, with French-style houses and shops. The area around the Old Market is crowded with locals and foreigners all day long and has a bit of a party vibe to it.

Where to Stay in Siem Reap : Mad Monkey – A fun, lively, and social hsotel with a bar, pool, and lots of tours and organized activities to help you meet people and explore the city.

A tree growing around a temple at Angkor Wat in Cambodia

The most popular temples are Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Phrom, and Angkor Thom. I would recommend getting a multi-day pass so you can visit some of the outer temples where there are fewer visitors. While a single-day visit can cover the basics, this is an amazing site to explore so I highly recommend two days (at least).

You can hire a tuk-tuk for the day for around $25 USD or rent bicycles and explore on your own (bikes cost around $5 USD per day). Tuk-tuks have room for 3-4 people, making it a cheap and convenient option if you can split the ride with other travelers.

Angkor Wat is open daily from 5am to 6pm. Admission is $37 USD per person for a day pass, $62 USD for a three-day pass, and $72 USD for a seven-day pass.

One of the many ancient temples surrounded by trees at Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Known as “the city of women,” this temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and features a number of outstanding red sandstone statues. (You need an Angkor Wat Pass to visit.)

If you have time, visit Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake and UNESCO nature reserve. It is 52 kilometers (32 miles) from Siem Reap. Sailing down the river and around the lake gives you a look at how closely Cambodian life is tied to this major waterway. You can rent a boat for around $20 USD.

What to See and Do in Cambodia: A Two-Week Itinerary

Want to spend more time in Cambodia? Great! You should! There are tons of other places to visit. Here are my suggestions:

Days 1 & 2 – Phnom Penh Follow the Phnom Penh itinerary from above.

Day 3 & 4 – Sihanoukville Follow the Sihanoukville itinerary from above.

A quiet beach with exotic trees on Kog Rong, Cambodia

Day trips costs around $25 USD and include lunch and snorkeling equipment, but since you have the time, spend a few nights here relaxing and enjoying beach life.

There are also other islands nearby if you want to stay longer and explore, including Koh Rong Samloem, which is becoming something of a backpacker paradise (there’s even a Full Moon Party there now).

A scenic view overlooking the jungle near Kep, Cambodia

Consider taking two full days here. Sure, it’s quite sleepy and there’s not a lot to do, but it’s the perfect place to relax, eat all the delicious crabs the city is famous for, and read a book. You can also spend some time on nearby Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay) too, a secluded and charming escape from the world if you’re looking to disconnect. Basic bungalows can be rented for under $10 USD per night and it’s just $20 USD to get there.

Where to Stay in Kep : Khmer House Hostel – Kep is pretty spread out, so wherever you stay, make sure you rent a bike or scooter. This hostel is a good option as it’s not far from the Crab Market.

The brown waters of the river in Kampot, cambodia

I’d spend one night in Kampot. It’s another quiet town on the coast. Most people come here to enjoy the scenic riverside views as well as the rolling hills that surround the city. The area used to be a getaway for the French, so you’ll see old French architecture around.

At night, the street near the old bridge is lined with fruit shake vendors. Try a million. The city is famous for them.

Also, if you only do one thing in this entire itinerary, make sure it’s eating the ribs at The Rusty Keyhole. They are some of the best ribs I’ve ever had in my entire life. I still dream of it.

Where to Stay in Kampot : Karma Traders Kampot – With a pool, AC, hot showers, a restaurant on-site, and a rooftop bar, this hostel has everything you need for a fun stay. The staff are great and it’s super easy to meet people here too.

The green fields surrounding Kampot in Cambodia

Days 11, 12, & 13 – Siem Reap Follow the Siem Reap itinerary from above. Angkor Wat is best seen slowly, so use your days to explore it as much as possible. There are a lot of out-of-the-way temples to visit that are free of crowds.

Day 14 – Siem Reap On your last day in Cambodia, why not take a cooking class? The class sizes tend to be around six people, and you will learn to prepare three different meals, as well as get recipe cards at the end. Prices start around $20 USD per person; local guesthouses can help arrange a class.

What to See and Do in Cambodia: A Three-Week Itinerary

Have even more time for Cambodia? Good! Cambodia has a lot more to it than the major spots on the backpacker trail.

Days 1, 2, & 3 – Phnom Penh and Kirirom National Park Follow the above suggestions, but also head out to Kirirom National Park for a day trip. This park has all sorts of walking trails, mountain biking trails, waterfalls, and a few lakes. It was the first official park in the country and is a good place to go to take a break from the city.

The park is around a two-hour drive from the city, so you’ll need to hire a driver for the day. The best way to do this is to find some travelers to join you so you can share a ride, which costs around $80 USD for the day.

Days 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8 – Sihanoukville and the Islands Follow the above suggestions but at a much slower pace!

Days 9, 10 & 11 – Kep and Rabbit Island Follow the above suggestions for Kep, but head out to Rabbit Island for a rustic island getaway.

Days 12 & 13 – Kampot Follow the above suggestions!

Days 14, 15, & 16 – Siem Reap Follow the above suggestions!

One of the many ancient temples covered in jungle at Koh Ker in Cambodia

There are no public buses that go there (the roads were only paved a few years ago), so you’ll have to arrange transportation via your hostel or hotel.

A tall waterfall in the middle of a lush jungle in Phnom Kulen, Cambodia

When you arrive, you’ll discover Cambodia without the tourism. Get familiar with Battambang by exploring the town on foot (or by tuk-tuk). Check out the Phsar Boeung Choeuk and Phsar Naht markets. You’ll also want to visit the gorgeous pagodas and temples, such as Wat Pippitharam (near the Old Market), Wat Bovil, Wat Kandal, and Wat Damreay Sar.

In the evening, check out the Battambang Circus. The show is put on by students at a Cambodian nonprofit art school, so your donations go to a good cause.

Where to Stay in Battambang : The Place Hostel & Rooftop Bar – With AC, female-only dorms, and a great rooftop bar, this hostel is a fun and cheap place to stay. It’s not super social but, with limited options in town, this is the best place to stay.

The green farmlands surrounding Battambang in Cambodia

While you’re wandering, don’t miss the Art Deco central market building and the Victory swimming pool (where you can take a dip if you’re in the mood). You may want to visit the Battambang Museum; admission is just $1 USD and you’ll learn a lot about the history of the area.

After lunch, you should grab a tuk-tuk and head a bit out of town to check out Phnom Sampeu, a large hill where you’ll find some caves with Buddhist temples in them. There’s also another cave at the foot of Phnom Sampeu; this is where you want to be around dusk, when millions of bats fly out of the cave in search of food. It’s an incredible sight! You can hire a driver for around $20 USD for a full day.

Two monks in orange robes walking in a temple in Cambodia

I always love my time in Cambodia . It lacks the polish of Thailand, making travel here a little more rustic and challenging.

But more amazing than any of the country’s sights and activities are the people. I’ve always found them to be incredibly welcoming. Even with so much darkness clouding their recent history, Cambodians always go above and beyond, making any trip here a memorable one.

But don’t take my word for it. Come and see this incredible country for yourself. These suggested Cambodia itineraries can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time in this amazing destination!

The best times to visit Cambodia for temple trips, beach days and more

Mar 24, 2022 • 6 min read

High season draws huge crowds for iconic photo opportunities like sunrise at Angkor Wat

Some Cambodians wryly observe that Cambodia has three seasons – hot, hotter and hottest – but in reality, there are distinct dry and wet seasons that define the harvest cycle and dramatically alter the character of the landscape in this fascinating Southeast Asian nation.

The dry season runs from November to May, and the "cool season" months of November to February are the most popular time to visit Cambodia due to milder temperatures. The countryside appears somewhat parched from February to May when daytime temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F ).

The wet season usually runs from June to October, coinciding with the southwest monsoon, but it's not necessarily a bad time to travel to Cambodia. It usually only rains heavily once a day towards sunset, the countryside is a blaze of green, and many hotels and resorts offer substantial discounts.

Here's a guide to the best times to visit Cambodia.

The high season (November–March) is the best time for good weather and exploring temples

Temperatures in Cambodia are much more Mediterranean during the "winter" months in Southeast Asia. The mercury occasionally drops below 20°C (68°F), forcing Cambodians to scramble for their coats and woollies. This makes exploring the temples much more pleasant, but it's also the most crowded time at Angkor . Lots of accommodation is booked out in advance, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period and during Chinese New Year, which follows the lunar calendar, falling in January or February.

The shoulder season (July–August) is the best time for families

Although this is the middle of Cambodia's wet season, it doesn’t usually rain that much, though there's enough water to swell the Tonle Sap lake. It's an ideal time for families living in Europe and North America, thanks to the long school holidays and discounted prices at hotels and resorts.

There are also far fewer tourists exploring Angkor during the "green season" when the moats are full of water and many of the temples are coated in moss and lichen. The main drawback of shoulder season travel is that it can rain quite heavily on the coast, meaning Ko Rong and other idyllic islands near Sihanoukville can be quite wet and windy.

The low season (April–June & September–October) is the best time for discounts

When it comes to weather, these months are definitely not the best. Temperatures in April and May reach scorchio levels, and September and October are wet, wet, wet. However, this is the time when accommodation providers release their best special offers. You can save a huge amount of money if you plan on staying at five-star hotels and luxury resorts. September and October are the height of the rainy season, but this also brings emerald landscapes and epic cloud formations.

A month-by-month planner

Many of Cambodia's big festivals follow the lunar calendar and spill across more than one month on the Gregorian calendar. Here's a guide to what is happening throughout the year.

January–March is the busiest time of year

This is peak tourist season in Cambodia, and Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the South Coast are usually heaving. The internationally recognized New Year celebrations are followed by Chinese and Vietnamese New Years' festivities, so be ready for some serious festive cheer.

Chaul Chnam Chen & Tet: The Chinese New Year – known locally as Chaul Chnam Chen – coincides with Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, falling in either January or February depending on the year. As many of Phnom Penh ’s businesses are run by Chinese-Khmers, commerce grinds to a halt around this time and there are dragon dances all over the capital.

April–June brings festivals and the start of the rains

This is the beginning of the low season for visitors, as the monsoon swoops in, bringing regular rain until October. Young rice is planted and the landscape begins to come to life once more in a blaze of green after the parched months of the dry season. April is the most important month in the calendar for Khmers, marking the Cambodian New Year. However, temperatures rocket and the mercury regularly hits 40°C (104°F).

Chaul Chnam Khmer: During the three-day celebration of Chaul Chnam Khmer (Khmer New Year) in mid-April, Cambodians make offerings at wats, clean out their homes and exchange gifts. It is a memorable time to visit the Kingdom as Khmers go wild with water in the countryside, and a good-natured water fight spills across the country (throwing talcum powder is also popular).

Chat Preah Nengkal (Royal Ploughing Ceremony): Presided over by the royal family, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient agricultural festival held to mark the traditional beginning of the rice-growing season. The royal oxen predict whether or not it will be a good harvest by tucking into the sacred crop. The ritual takes place in early May and rotates around different provincial capitals.

Visakha Puja (Buddha Day): A celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinibbana (passing), Visakha Puja sees locals flock to wats (pagodas) to pay their respects. The festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth moon (in May or June) and sees processions of monks carrying candles through Angkor Wat at night.

July–September sees more celebrations and crowds of backpackers

Tourism numbers see a bounce in July and August thanks to the annual school holidays in Europe and the US. Backpackers also descend on Cambodia and the Mekong region to take advantage of university and college holidays. September is traditionally the wettest month in Cambodia, with sporadic flooding along the Mekong and around Battambang . The Khmer calendar’s second-most-important festival, P’chum Ben, falls in September or October.

P’chum Ben (Festival of the Dead): This festival resembles the Christian celebration of All Souls’ Day when respects are paid to the dead through offerings made at wats. P’chum Ben lasts for several days and devout Buddhists are expected to visit seven wats during the festival. Local temples are a blaze of color, ceremonies and chanting.

October-December sees rain give way to warm, dry winds

The rains extend deep into October and this has led to some serious flooding in recent years. However, the countryside is extraordinarily green, and it's a rewarding time for boat travel between Siem Reap and Battambang. November sees the start of the dry, windy season, the best time to be in the country. The peak tourist season starts and continues through until February.

Bon Om Tuk, the much-celebrated Water Festival, takes place in October or November. Christmas and New Year are peak times for visitors at Angkor and leading beach resorts, so book a long way ahead. The international New Year on 31 December is widely (and wildly) celebrated in key cities such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Bon Om Tuk (Water Festival): Celebrating the victory of King Jayavarman VII over the Chams, this important festival in October or November also marks the extraordinary natural phenomenon of the reversal of the flow of the Tonlé Sap River. It’s a wonderful, chaotic time to be in Cambodia, with boat races at Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, and riverside parties in Siem Reap.

Angkor Photo Festival: In Siem Reap, resident and regional photographers descend on the temples and team up with local youths to teach them the tricks of the trade at this civic-minded festival in November or December. Photography exhibitions are staged all over town and some famous Vietnam War-era photographers are sometimes in attendance.

Angkor Wat International Half Marathon: This half marathon in December has been a fixture on the sporting calendar for two decades. Choose from a 21km (13-mile) half marathon, a 10km (6.2-mile) fun run or various bicycle races. It’s hard to imagine a better backdrop for a run than the incredible temples of Angkor.

Alex and Leah on Tour

The Perfect Month Itinerary for Cambodia

One of the most popular destinations for Western travellers before Covid-19, Cambodia is quickly getting back to the level of tourists it once had. Having travelled to Cambodia ourselves in 2022, we’d thought we’d share our The Perfect Month Itinerary for Cambodia in 2022; so YOU know where to visit and for how long.

Is Cambodia open for travel?

The short answer is yes.

At the time of writing (March 2022), Cambodia is open for tourism and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.

If you’re fully vaccinated, you only need to present your proof of vaccination to enter Cambodia. However, if you’re not fully vaccinated you must quarantine for 14 days at a hotel arranged by the Cambodian government OR at a pre-booked hotel of your choice. You can find further information at https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/cambodia/entry-requirements

Getting a Cambodian Visa

There are two ways of getting a Cambodia visa; before entry or on arrival.

You can apply for a Cambodian visa via the Cambodian government’s website . A visa costs $30 plus a $6 processing fee per visa; it takes between three and seven days for your application to be processed.

The Cambodian government has also reinstalled the Visa On Arrival service for all international travellers. However, foreign nationals are not guaranteed a visa on arrival as the government reserves the right to deny entry to individuals that do not meet all the Cambodian visa requirements .

Check out our 13 Top Tips for Travelling Cambodia in 2022 for more information on getting a Cambodian visa in both instances.

Things you should know about Cambodia:

  • Out of all the 195 countries in the world, it is the only flag to feature a building.
  • The US Dollar is the unofficial second currency of Cambodia.
  • 2 million Cambodians were killed during the country’s civil war from 1975 to 1979.
  • Subsequently, roughly 50% of the population is under 15 years of age.
  • Cambodia is one of the very few countries that doesn’t have a McDonald’s. Whilst KFC is present in Cambodia, it actually loses money being here.
  • There are estimated to be nearly 6 million active landmines in the country, leftover from the civil war. As many as 30 people die a year as a result.
  • Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious building.
  • Khmer is the only official spoken language in Cambodia.

The Route for your Perfect Month Itinerary in Cambodia

The time recommended at each stop below is just that, recommended. It’s based on our own experience of having visited Cambodia in 2022 and we want to help you maximise your stay in Cambodia.

In some cases, we stayed for the time recommended whilst in others we either stayed there too long or not enough time.

The total number of days below does not equate to 30 days but this will allow you to stay longer in places or take some “do nothing” days.

cambodia trip 2022

1st Stop = Phnom Penh

Recommended Stay: 3-4 days

  • Phnom Penh is the ideal first spot for anyone who hasn’t been to Cambodia before. The capital has both developed and poorer areas, allowing you to get to grips with how different Cambodians live.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed the range of cuisines on offer; meeting loads of people; and the Central Market.

How to get to Phnom Penh:

  • Phnom Penh is incredibly easy to fly into as it has great links with other Southeast Asian cities (Bangkok and Seoul).
  • If you’re flying from outside the region, you’ll likely have to change at one of these bigger airports to then fly into Phnom Penh.
  • It is very easy to get the trans-border bus directly to Phnom Penh from Vietnam and Saigon specifically.
  • Buses also run from Thailand to Phnom Penh but they can take up to 16 hours. Check out our onward travel section below about visiting Battambang and Siem Reap along the way.

Check out our in-depth Phnom Penh Travel Guide for more information about what to do, where to eat and where to stay.

Phnom Penh - Month Itinerary Cambodia

2nd Stop = Battambang

Recommended Stay: 1-2 days

  • Surprisingly one of our most enjoyable locations in the whole of Cambodia.
  • We absolutely loved the chilled atmosphere here. It also gave us a well-needed chance to relax after a couple of non-stop weeks.
  • Despite the city lacking the notoriety that other Cambodian cities possess; it is still full of beautiful cafes and amazing eateries that you MUST check out.
  • You have to ride the famous Battambang Bamboo Train

How to get to Battambang from Phnom Penh:

  • We’d recommend taking the bus from Phnom Penh to Battambang as it is the cheapest and quickest way.
  • Prices range from $9-$13 per person.
  • Travel time is roughly 6-7 hours
  • Departure times are normally: 7am; 7:30am; 8am; 8:30am; 9am; 12:15pm; 1:30pm; 2pm & 9pm.

Check out our in-depth Battambang Travel Guide for more information about what to do, where to eat and where to stay.

Battambang - Month Itinerary Cambodia

3rd Stop = Siem Reap

Recommended Stay: 2-4 days

  • Siem Reap, more commonly known as the gateway to Angkor Wat, is one the most beautiful places you can visit in the world, let alone Cambodia. The city itself is always bustling and has loads of great eateries, bars and places to soak up true Cambodian culture.
  • Obviously, Angkor Wat is the main attraction of the city and it is absolutely worth visiting; even if it is just to see the famous temple.
  • Apart from having some regrets about our accommodation (see our Siem Reap Travel Guide for more info), we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
  • It ended up getting quite hot so it was pleasing that the city’s other main attractions were all within walking distance.
  • Siem Reap also has some awesome breakfast and brunch spots as well as beautiful restaurants so make sure you stick around to try some of those out!

How to get to Siem Reap from Battambang:

  • We’d recommend taking the bus from Battambang to Siem Reap as it is the cheapest and quickest way.
  • Prices range from $8-$10 per person.
  • Travel time is roughly 4 hours
  • Departure times are normally: 9am; 12pm & 6pm.

Check out our in-depth Siem Reap Travel Guide for more information about what to do, where to eat and where to stay.

cambodia trip 2022

4th Stop = Koh Rong Island

  • Koh Rong is absolutely beautiful with its crystal clear sea and white sand.
  • Whilst it is known for being more of a “late-night” island than Sanloem, Koh Rong still has endless beaches to relax on.
  • For backpackers, the main ”party” place is Nest Beach Club, the only hostel on the island. They have an official ”Nest-ival” party every Saturday but any night can turn into one and it’s a great place to meet people.
  • The island’s main village on Koah Touch Beach is also great to escape your accommodation and do some laundry if you’re in need.

How to get to Koh Rong from Siem Reap:

  • This is such an important and extensive piece of information, we dedicated a whole separate post which you can check out.
  • However, in order to get the ferry from Sihanoukville, we’d recommend taking the overnight bus from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville as it is the cheapest and quickest method.
  • Prices range from $15-$18 per person.
  • Travel time is roughly 10 hours.
  • Departure times are normally 8pm which means you’ll arrive in Sihanoukville at 6am. Visit the above link to know what to do when you’re in Sihanoukville.

Check out our in-depth Koh Rong Island Travel Guide (coming soon) for more information about what to do, where to eat and where to stay.

Koh rong - Month Itinerary Cambodia

5th Stop = Koh Rong Sanloem Island

Recommended Stay: 3-5 days

  • In comparison to Koh Rong, Sanloem is definitely the more “chilled out” of the two and you’ll instantly get this vibe when walking along the beachfront.
  • You can easily spend nearly a week here to decompress and chill out after a long travel day/night.
  • Whilst it wasn’t luxury, Onerderz Hostel was all we needed (inc hot showers) and was well priced. Conversely, there are many resort hotels you can check into if you want to treat yourself!

How to get to Koh Rong Sanloem from Koh Rong:

  • Again, as this is such an important and extensive piece of information, we dedicated a whole separate post which you can check out.

Check out our in-depth Koh Rong Sanloem Island Travel Guide (coming soon) for more information about what to do, where to eat and where to stay.

Sanloem - Month Itinerary Cambodia

6th Stop = Kampot

Recommended Stay: 3-4 days

  • We found that Kampot had a very similar atmosphere to Battambang with its laid back attitude and cute cafes; no wonder we enjoyed it here so much.
  • This is a great final destination as you can take some extra ”do nothing” days and enjoy being back on the mainland. Relaxing here will also give time to prepare for the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh; the final stop on the tour.

How to get Kampot from Koh Rong Sanloem:

  • To know how to get back to Sihanoukville from the Islands, check out our easy guide HERE .
  • Once you’re off the ferry and in Sihanoukville, you’re faced with the hard part.
  • Whilst there is a road to Kampot from Sihanoukville, half of the road there is of very poor quality (even bad for Cambodia and that’s saying something). As such, bus companies aren’t operating between the two cities at all.
  • This means that the quickest option is hiring a taxi. You can choose to get a bus from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh and then another to Kampot but the journey time will be roughly 10 hours. On top of this, the price will almost certainly be $20pp; thus, the cost and length of the journey probably make this route unfeasible.
  • Ultimately, the best method of transport, factoring in time and cost, is a private taxi. The fare is around $50 so the more people you have (up to four), the cheaper it will be per person.
  • A simple google search will give you the contact information of numerous taxi drivers/l or companies that are willing to take you. If this does fail or the price is too high, we know people who asked at the ferry companies on Sihanoukville Port who were able to assist. They ended up getting a taxi at $10pp.
  • Having coordinated travel plans with our friends, we ended up getting a taxi number from another friend and paid $50 for the trip.
  • The journey took us roughly three hours and I can vouch that the roads were very bad in places!

Check out our in-depth Kampot Travel Guide (coming soon) for more information about what to do, where to eat and where to stay.

Kampot - Month Itinerary Cambodia

7th Stop = Phnom Penh

Recommended stay: 1-3 days

  • Having now visited all the must-see locations in Cambodia, you now return to Phnom Penh to mop up anything you didn’t get to do the first time around OR do again.
  • This will also provide you with valuable relaxing time and to catch up on some sleep before your next adventure or flight home. As a result, this maybe an ideal time to stay in a comfortable hotel if, like us, your social battery dies.
  • Conversely, this could be your last ever few nights out in Cambodia so why not make the most of it?!

How to get Phnom Penh from Kampot:

  • We’d recommend taking the bus from Kampot to Phnom Penh as numerous bus companies operate this journey.
  • Prices range from $6-$8 per person.
  • Travel time is roughly 3-3.5 hours
  • Departure times are normally: 7am; 7:30am; 8am; 8:30am; 9:15am; 9:30am; 10:30am; 12pm; 12:30pm; 1:30pm; 1:45pm; 2pm; 2:30pm; 3:30pm; 4pm; 4:30pm; 4:45pm; 5pm; 5:45pm & 6pm.

Onward Travel:

As a result of each respective government’s Covid-19 containment strategy, land borders between Cambodia and Thailand, Vietnam & Laos have been closed. That has meant the only way in and out of the country has been by plane at the heavily controlled Phnom Penh airport. Cambodia’s borders with Thailand and Laos are still currently close (as of March 2022) but there have been recent murmurings that these land borders will open in the near future so watch this space.

Conversely, the Cambodia-Vietnam border has recently opened but securing a Vietnam visa at the border has been particularly difficult for some foreign nationals. Buses are now running between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City; just be wary of being scammed as guards are working with bus drivers to coax foreigners out of more money just to have their passports returned.

Obviously, the route out of Cambodia depends entirely on your arrival and departure locations which, in turn, are impacted by the land border situation. If you’re entering from Thailand, we’d recommend starting in Battambang before ending in Phnom Penh; from here you can then fly or take the bus to Vietnam.

Conversely, if you’re arriving from Vietnam and then heading into Thailand, due to the closed Cambodia-Thailand land border, we’d recommend doing the route above and then flying from Phnom Penh to your destination in Thailand.

Is one month in Cambodia too much time? Why not check out our Perfect Two Week Itinerary for Cambodia in 2022 to make sure you visit Cambodia’s main attractions?

We hope you had as good a time as we did!

I only managed a 4-night stay in Siem Reap during my trip to Cambodia and want to return one day to see more of the country so this itinerary is a perfect starting point.

Glad we’ve been able to help Angela. We really enjoyed our time there alot!

I wouldn’t know where to start in Cambodia- thank you Alex and Leah

Glad we’ve been able to help Taylor! Let us know what you think when you visit.

I’ve always wanted to go to Kampot! Now I know what else to do along the way. Thanks!

Great to hear we’ve been able to help Nina; Kampot is a must!

This is the perfect Cambodia Itinerary! Thanks for sharing. Someday, I would love to visit with a slow travel experience.

I would love to spend a month exploring Cambodia. There are so many historical places here that are on my list. Thanks for sharing your itinerary!

Looks like an amazing trip, and you have gorgeous photos! I have never been to Cambodia, and now I have some great ideas. Thanks so much for sharing!

It has really surprised us how much we like Cambodia and we’d definitely recommend it. Glad we’ve been able to help Erin.

Cambodia seems such a charming place! the territory and the temples are just stunning! thanks for this guide! I will definitely be inspired!

It really is a beautiful place! Thanks for your kind words Lasma.

I have not yet traveled to Cambodia, but it is definitely on my lise! Thanks for sharing this itinerary and tips.

Glad we’ve been able to help Alaina; Cambodia is definitely worth visiting, even for only two weeks.

Sucha great itinerary, it’s always so hard trying to figure out how to plan your time in a country abroad when you dont know much about it so I really appreciate this. Also, I really enjoyed the facts at the beginning, I can’t believe there are active landmines!

Thanks Venaugh, you’re very kind. I know; we were just as shocked!

Relaxing in Battambang and then heading to Siem Reap to see the temple sounds like the perfect stops if I had a shorter time. Though it’s hard to choose because it all looks incredible!

Battambang really surprised us, we loved it there.. we totally agree!

I absolutely love this itinerary, it really shows a mix to Cambodia! My favourite is definitely Koh Rong, I swam with the bioluminescent plankton and it was incredible!!

Really glad the itinerary has been useful Lana! Seeing the plankton was also a great favourite of ours, so pretty!

Thank you for this! Cambodia is tops on my travel list- Angkor Wat is a big reason why. I’m so glad to have the information about what else we should see. I doubt we’ll have a month but fingers crossed!

So glad we’ve been able to help Jami; Angkor Wat is definitely a must-visit! You can still see everything in Cambodia in two weeks if that’s all the time you have? Do drop us a message if you need any further tips on Cambodia!

So many great things to do and see! What are the must dos if you only have 2 weeks?

Angor Wat definitely; the Koh Rong Islands are beautiful and Kampot is a hidden gem… the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh is great too!

Like a few others, I’ve been to Cambodia but that was more than a decade ago. The photos you took show a different Cambodia than the one in my hazy memory. Might revisit just to jog my memory and retread my old itinerary.

It’s absolutely worth visiting again! Hopefully, Cambodia has come a long way since you last visited.

Such a detailed itinerary, thank you! I always find that the tiny transportation details are the hardest to figure out, so knowing this info is so helpful

Thanks for your kind words Melissa; glad we’ve been able to help.

Great and detailed itinerary! I have never really thought to go to Cambodia but I definitely want to go to Thailand (because my mom was a flight attendant and was stationed there back in the day, and I love Thai food). I should consider a stop in Cambodia too!

Thank you Hannah. You should definitely take time to visit, even if it is for a couple of weeks. We’re currently in Thailand now and its amazing; the food here is so nice (and affordable).

This is a great guide and itinerary on how to spend a month in Cambodia. It’s such a beautiful country.

Thank you so much, really appreciate your kind words. It is honestly a beautiful country and well worth visiting.

Siem Reap definitely peaks my interest. It’s a pity you guys were disappointed with the accommodation:-(

It was a really amazing city! I know, hopefully others won’t make the same mistake as us!

This makes me miss Cambodia so much – absolutely gonna take this as a sign to return! 😭

You should definitely go back; we really enjoyed our time here.

Cambodia Tours & Holidays

Angkow Wat temple at sunset in the middle of the jungle, Cambodia

Travelling in Cambodia is the ultimate South East Asian experience.

Beneath the Cardamom Mountains or on the banks of the Mekong, Khmer village life goes on pretty much as it always has (give or take the odd iPhone). And when you’re watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat or the ruins of Tha Promh, the modern world feels a long way off. While progress was dampened for years by a tragic history, Cambodia is now a country on the move. With riverside boulevards and art galleries popping up in Phnom Penh, and Siem Riep's growing reputation for hip cafes and top-notch dining, Cambodia tours aren’t just about the temple-gazing (although we have to admit, the gazing is pretty darn good!).

Best time to visit cambodia.

Any time of the year is a good time to holiday in Cambodia, with each season having its advantages.

The climate in Cambodia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures stay in the 30s (celcius) most of the year, dropping back to the 20s at night.

There are officially two seasons in Cambodia – wet and dry.

During November to May you can expect dry conditions, while June to October will have wetter weather.

Culture and customs

The Khmer culture has lasted for centuries, and is based on tradition, honouring ancestors, respecting elders and living a life of honesty, humility and kindness. This is probably why Cambodians are known for being some of the warmest, most hospitable and humble people in the world.

As with other neighbouring nations like Thailand, the concept of “saving face” is important. Displaying control and keeping a peaceful nature in public is paramount, as is not losing your temper or ridiculing others.

Most Khmer people are Buddhist. Monks are highly regarded and respected in society, and religious festivals and ceremonies are important parts of daily life. When visiting Cambodia, expect to see orange-robed monks and many displays of faith - from people visiting large, elaborate temples to them praying over small, humble shrines.

Despite the infiltration of modern ideas and concepts, Khmer customs and traditions are kept alive with traditional dance, art, festivals and costume enduring alongside modern pop music and dance.

Eating and drinking

Like most other Asian countries, rice, noodle soups and stir fries are common in Cambodia. Drawing on Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines, Cambodian food is strong in flavour but usually not as spicy as food from neighbouring countries.

Foods to try in Cambodia

1. Fish amok

Fish amok is fish that’s been baked in creamy coconut, ginger, lemongrass and turmeric curry sauce and wrapped in banana leaves. This silky national dish will melt in your mouth. You can also get amok with chicken, tofu or veggies.

2. Nom banh chok

A popular breakfast meal, nom banh chok is a rice noodle soup made with green fish gravy, beansprouts, banana flowers, cucumbers and lots of green veggies.

3. Lap Khmer

Not your typical cold salad, this Khmer specialty is made with lightly seared, thinly sliced marinated beef, dressed with lemongrass, shallots, garlic, fish sauce, herbs, greens and lots of red chillies.

4. Ongkrong saek koo

One of the more palatable insect options you’ll find on a Cambodian menu, this dish is a stir fry of beef, basil, garlic, ginger, lemongrass and lots of ants, topped with chilli and served on a bed of rice.

5. Baguettes

A remnant of Cambodia’s French-colonial past, fresh, crunchy baguettes are sold from street stalls and at markets - and make a great, low-cost breakfast or snack.

6. Tropical fruit

Jackfruit, mangoes, bananas, pineapple, dragon fruit and watermelon are all plentiful in Cambodian. Get a street vendor to mix up a fresh juice or smoothie for a refreshing treat.

7. Iced coffee

Sweetened with condensed milk, the beloved iced coffee is the drink to try in Cambodia. If the caffeine gets too much, you can always switch to fresh coconuts to quench your thirst.

Geography and environment

Bordered by Vietnam , Thailand and Laos , much of Cambodia is covered by forested area, although sadly, this is rapidly changing due to the growth of agriculture, logging and deforestation. Home to the largest lake in South East Asia, Tonle Sap (Great Lake) connects to the Mekong River and swells to four times its normal size during the monsoon season.

Most of the country is low-lying, except for pockets of mountains. Large cities like Siem Reap and Phnom Penh are typically built-up, busy and filled with modern conveniences like nightclubs, bars, public transport and restaurants. Smaller towns and rural areas enjoy more peace and space, with low-density, simple housing and a reliance on agriculture for income.

History and government

Early history.

Evidence of early life in Cambodia dates back to 1500BC, and further evidence suggests that by the 1st Century, rice cultivation, fishing and animal husbandry were the basis of organised society in Cambodia. Various empires arose in the early stages of Cambodian history, with the Funan and Chenla Kingdoms reigning before the rise of the Khmer civilisation.

Regarded as one of the most powerful empires in the world, the Khmer Empire prospered from the 9th to the 13th centuries. This was a time of growth and expansion, and many of the artistic treasures and archaeological monuments that Cambodia is known for come from this era. The world-famous temples of Angkor were built during this period, and hold important clues to how life was lived back then. Temple inscriptions depicting daily life, religious ceremonies and military exploits give us important insights into this fascinating civilisation.

There are many theories that speculate on the decline of the Khmer Empire. It’s more than likely that a combination of factors including drought, the arrival of the Plague and the rise of neighbouring Thai superpower Ayutthaya resulted in the loss of momentum for a once-powerful empire. A period of decline followed, with the 15th to the 19th centuries marking a time when Cambodia had a lower profile in international affairs, until coming under French Colonial rule in 1863.

Recent history

The events that have shaped Cambodia’s recent history began with the Communist Party of Kampuchea overpowering the Khmer Republic after more than 100 days of fierce fighting. What followed was a radical change in society, with Pol Pot leading the country now known as Kampuchea. This brutal regime soon set about restructuring society and was responsible for committing awful atrocities against the civilian population. Religion and education were repressed, currency and banking were abolished and people were sent to work in the fields. Business people, educators, scholars and other high-ranking members of society were hunted down and murdered by the Khmer Rouge. It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of people (possibly millions) were murdered between 1975 and 1979. In addition to this, many more died of starvation and disease due to a lack of medical care and nourishment.

This nationalistic, murderous regime was finally overcome by the Vietnamese Army in 1979, signalling the beginning of the peace process and the establishment of the People’s Republic of Kampuchea. In 1993, millions of Cambodians voted to elect a new government, which then ratified a new constitution, and in 2004 a tribunal was established to serve justice to the people who committed atrocities during the Khmer Rouge era.

Today, Cambodia is rebuilding and moving on from its tragic past. Many NGOs have set up programs that empower and support Cambodians with education, health care, training and counselling. While wide-scale poverty and other social problems remain, Cambodia continues to gain strength from its burgeoning tourism industry, and has recently been successful in increasing access to education and health care as well as improving overall living standards.

7 must-visit places in Cambodia

1. phnom penh.

Cambodia’s capital may be chaotic but there are moments of peace to be found. Relax in a riverfront bar, find serenity in a local temple or soak up the grand atmosphere of the Royal Palace.

2. Battambang

Beautiful Battambang is home to wonderful examples of French-Colonial architecture, ornate temples, peaceful pagodas and scenic villages. Choose to day trip here or stay longer to be immersed in this place of authenticity.

3. Siem Reap

With vibrant markets, cool bars, excellent restaurants and superb street food - fun times, culinary adventures and a healthy dose of retail therapy are guaranteed in sensational Siem Reap.

4. Kompong Cham

Full of old-world charm and quiet beauty, Kompong Cham is a great place to switch gears and go slow. Wander the streets to admire decaying colonial buildings, visit a Wat for a quiet moment of reflection or sit on the riverbanks and watch fishermen glide by.

The sprawling ruins of ever-impressive Angkor are not to be underestimated. From the smiling faces of the Bayon and the twisted trees of Ta Prohm, to the magnetic aura of mighty Angkor Wat, this archaeological site is both intriguing and inspiring.

Riverside Kampot is a blissful place to unwind. Acting as a gateway to nearby mountains, waterfalls, caves, ruins and national parks, this little haven of tranquillity has a great range of quaint guesthouses and cute cafes to keep travellers comfortable.

Home to rare river-dwelling dolphins, amber sunsets and a gorgeous riverfront, Kratie may be small in size but is still a great spot to stop and get away from it all for a few days.

Highlights of Cambodia

1. angkor wat.

After watching in awe as the sun rises over the incredible Angkor Wat temple, join a local guide to uncover the history and mysteries of this incredible 12th-century temple complex. You may also like to visit a monastery to experience an ancient ritual where you’ll be sprinkled with holy water and blessed with good luck for the rest of your travels.

2. Tonlé Sap

Known as the Great Lake of Cambodia, Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and is an essential food source for many Cambodians. Hop in a boat and cruise through floating villages where people live in silted houses, study in floating schools, pray in floating churches and temples, and eat in floating restaurants.

3. Kompong Cham

Brimming with vibrant shops, Art Deco buildings, lazy streets and wide riverside boulevards, Kampong Cham oozes old-world charm. Cycle across the famous bamboo bridge, climb the pink French Tower for impressive cityscapes, explore the 11th-century Wat Nokor complex, or tuck into tasty street eats at the market.

Kampot’s delicious pepper is known by international chefs as the world’s best. Visit the Pepper Project to learn about (and taste!) why it's so famous, explore the ghostly (but beautiful) buildings near Kep’s waterfront, or enjoy a massage by a blind masseur or masseuse while supporting the local charity, Seeing Hands.

5. Phnom Penh

Welcome to Cambodia’s bustling capital. There’s lots to see and do in Phnom Penh, whether you want to marvel at the grandeur of the Royal Palace, eat local specialties at the night market, people watch with a cocktail, or learn about Cambodia’s sobering history.

6. Krong Battambang

Discover the beautifully preserved architecture and friendly Khmer people of Battambang – Cambodia's second-largest city – and its surrounding countryside. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride through rural villages, join locals for early morning yoga or folk dancing, or learn how to make amok and spicy fried chicken at a cooking class.

7. Siem Reap

Experience a traditional shadow puppetry show, peruse the old market for silks, silver and sarongs, or get to know other travellers and locals over a cold beer on Pub Street. When you’re in Siem Reap, don’t forget to try amok – a Cambodian curry dish served in a banana leaf.

Markets are plentiful in Cambodia - from the large markets like the Central and Russian Markets in Phnom Penh, to the smaller, local markets in regional areas. As with most markets in Asia , bargaining for a good price is commonplace. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Local groups and NGOs have worked to provide training in textile production and help disadvantaged families earn an income. If you are looking to take home a piece of Cambodia, consider purchasing a traditional item from a social enterprise.

Things to buy in Cambodia

  • Silver jewellery
  • Stone and wood carvings
  • Traditional Cambodian scarves (known as ‘kramas’)
  • Hand-woven baskets
  • Silk clothing and sarongs

Festivals and events

Most of Cambodia’s festivals stem from Theravada Buddhist rituals. Though they are meant to be spiritual in nature, Cambodians always find a way to inject a lot of fun into them. Here are some of the most important festivals in Cambodia.

1. Water Festival

This three-day festival, which marks the end of the monsoon season and the start of harvest, is a national holiday. Cities across Cambodia flock to the water each November to celebrate, but the festivities in Phnom Penh are by far the biggest. Featuring colourful boat races, illuminated ornamental boats, fireworks, concerts, and plenty of food and drink.

2. Khmer New Year (Chaul Chnam Thmey)

An important celebration in the Khmer calendar, the Cambodian New Year sees three days of people taking part in rituals, playing traditional games, performing gestures of goodwill towards others and enjoying feasts. Most Cambodians return to their homes to spend time with their families during this time.

3. Pchum Ben (Ancestors Day)

“Ancestors’ Day” involves Cambodians visiting pagodas bearing food, flowers, rice and gifts, which are given to monks to offer to the afterlife. Cambodian beliefs are steeped in superstition. The reason for the offerings is not only to commemorate lost loved ones but so the dead do not return to haunt the living.

Is tipping customary in Cambodia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Cambodia, but it's always appreciated. Feel free to tip drivers and restaurant staff if you feel the service has been good.

What is the internet access like in Cambodia?

Internet access is growing in Cambodia. Internet cafes are easily found in large cities, but the speed may be slower than what you’re used to.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Cambodia?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Cambodia’s urban areas, but may not be available in rural areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Cambodia?

Squat toilets are the most common in Cambodia, but western-style toilets can be found in large hotels and in tourist areas. Be prepared to pay a small fee when visiting public toilets, and always carry your own toilet paper and soap as they are usually not provided.

Can I drink the water in Cambodia?

It isn't recommended to drink the tap water in Cambodia. Remember to avoid drinks with ice and to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel will tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Cambodia?

Credit cards are usually accepted by modern hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller shops, cafes and market stalls in rural areas. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Cambodia?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities, like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Is it safe to travel to Cambodia?

Cambodia is a relatively safe destination to visit, however, like other popular travel destinations, there are times when visitors should be more cautious. Petty crime and scams can occur in tourist hotspots and in some regional areas, there may be safety advisories to stick to marked paths.

There can also be severe weather in Cambodia, especially during the wet season (July to November).

Is Cambodia a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Everyone should feel comfortable when they travel with Intrepid and we know that many of our travellers are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s important for our travellers to be aware of the local laws and customs in the destinations we visit, as some countries have laws that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ people. We recommend you visit  Equaldex  and/or ILGA before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQIA+ related laws.

On the whole, Cambodia is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers. The former King was a keen supporter of equal rights for same-sex partners, and as a result, most of the population is fairly accepting. Both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have small gay scenes, though they are decidedly more low-key compared to some parts of Asia. Be aware that Cambodian people typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Cambodia accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Cambodia is not always an easy country to travel to for people with mobility or vision disabilities, due to uneven and often broken footpaths, bumpy and potholed roads, crowded public transport and steps galore at temples. In saying this, local people are extremely hospitable and are likely to help out any travellers in need. The country’s biggest drawcard, the temples of Angkor, has had some ramps added in recent years but the paths are generally uneven and stairs challenging even for travellers without disabilities. Siem Reap and Phnom Penh airports have had recent upgrades in terms of wheelchair ramps and some higher end hotels may have accessible rooms. Many guesthouses and hotels have ground floor rooms although may not have other accessible facilities. Taxi and remorks can be easily and affordably hired to get around for city tours.

What's the weather like in Cambodia?

Cambodia's temperatures stay pretty constant all year round with a distinct wet and dry season. The north generally experiences slightly colder winters (dry seasons) than the south. The dry season is the most popular season to travel by far, as showers usually only occur in the late afternoon and for a matter of minutes before passing over.

What to wear in Cambodia

Cambodia has two types of weather: hot, and hot and wet. Loose, breathable clothing will be appropriate year-round, and if you’re travelling from June through to the beginning of November, you’ll want to pack a raincoat.

What's the transport like in Cambodia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there!

Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Cambodia, you may find yourself travelling by Cyclo.

Take the slow road and see Cambodia from the ground level while being pedalled through the streets by a friendly cyclo rider.

Remork, the Cambodian version of the tuk tuk, is a fun way to get around and perfect for short trips.

Get to know the countryside of Cambodia while riding a bicycle. Glide past fields of rice and wave hello to passing locals.

What's the accommodation like in Cambodia?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in Cambodia you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience rural life while staying with a local family. Make new friends, eat traditional, home-cooked meals and explore the Cambodian countryside.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What is it like travelling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my trip to Cambodia support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Cambodia directly support our foundation partner, Cambodia Rural Students Trust (CRST) .

CRST are helping to break the cycle of poverty by inspiring and empowering children in Cambodia with education opportunities. Donations help them provide their students with the best available education, leadership mentoring and life skills. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
