La Grande Dame tour: an homage to the woman behind Veuve Clicquot

champagne dame tour

With global champagne consumption only increasing annually, French fizz is still firmly seated high on the list for celebration must-haves. But if you’ve ever wanted to get to the bottom of how it all began, there’s nowhere better to do so than at the heart of the production line. The French region of Champagne is home to some of the world’s most coveted vineyards. Of the most iconic of the bunch is that of Veuve Clicquot Champagne, distinctive by their iconic yellow labels.

champagne dame tour

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame champagne tour is an experience of discovery- a guided tour that gives guests a taste of history. The tour is all about La Grande Cuvée: a champagne produced in honor of Madame Clicquot. Throughout the four-hour experience, guests are given a taste of the champagne house’s history, a look into their production process and, of course, a sample of the world-renowned champagne they produce.

champagne dame tour

When Madame Clicquot was widowed in 1805, she was left in control of her husband’s champagne house in central Reims. At the early age of twenty-seven, Madame Clicquot fronted the movement of art-driven labeling, creating the yellow branding that makes Veuve Clicquot bottles so distinctive even to this day.

Her most important contribution to winemaking was her invention of the riddling rack- a contraption that allows the storage of champagne bottles in an upside-down position. This method allows the yeast to collect in the neck of the bottle and agitate the champagne gently, achieving a crystal clarity that was not possible before.

Reims: more than just champagne

champagne dame tour

Less than a two-hour car ride away from The City Of Lights, Reims is the ultimate wine-making destination on the northeast side of Paris. Of all the regions in Champagne, Reims is best known for its fuller-bodied champagnes and is often the location to find Champagne’s best vintage bottles. Besides bubbly, Reims is a great destination for some excellent sight-seeing.

"This is real treat for champagne lovers: a vintage from 2008 that showcases the Maison’s expertise when it comes to Pinot Noir grapes."

Reims is home to the Cathedral Notre-dame de Reims, Basilique Saint-Remi and Palais du Tau, all of which exhibit the gothic architecture that Reims is known for.

La Grande Dame: An experience of discovery

champagne dame tour

The tour itself is led in English and begins with a guided discovery of the Crayeres- the House’s Unesco World Heritage listed wine cellars. From there, guests are led through the vineyards of Verzy, home to the Pinot Noir grape that Madame Clicquot believed offered the best palette for the finest of champagnes.

Once guests have learnt about the history and production of the world-famous champagne, they’re led back to the Maison for the most anticipated segment of the whole experience: the tasting. Guests are offered the chance to sample both La Grande Dame and La Grande Dame Rose for something a little pink.

The Taste of Excellence

champagne dame tour

Veuve Clicquot is made with 100% chardonnay grapes and aged in oak barrels for at least three years, which is what gives the champagne its full-bodied tasting notes. The piece de resistance in this experience is La Grande Dame cuvée, a champagne created in homage to the House’s beloved Madame. This is real treat for champagne lovers: a vintage from 2008 that showcases the Maison’s expertise when it comes to Pinot Noir grapes. As a cuvée, it is greatly focused on minerality, with a well-balanced palette and a creamy texture. Guests will notice fruity notes as the wine opens up, with notes of citrus and pear.

champagne dame tour

While it might be tempting to visit champagne right in harvest time, this is probably when many wine houses will actually be too busy to welcome visitors. A big name like Veuve Clicquot will have tours available all year round, however September remains extraordinarily busy, and the Maison is flooded with those eager to see the most vital step of wine production. For a more intimate experience, April to June are the best months to book a tour. You won’t be able to just show up and wander around however; La Grande Dame tour operates strictly by appointment only.

champagne dame tour

With guests experiencing a great mix of storytelling and wine sampling, La Grande Dame tour is sure to delight any champagne lover or history buff. Four delicious hours of touring the production cellars and vineyards are sure to warm up the tastebuds just in time for a glass of Veuve Clicquot’s beloved fizz.

ABOUT THE TOUR & REGION

champagne dame tour

CHAMPAGNE CAVES

The paris – champagne express.

On our 5-day tour we rendezvous in Paris in the morning and before you know it, you’re at one of the great Champagne Houses having a delicious lunch, sipping on the finest fizz, and learning all about this classic region. After lunch we’ll check into our hotel and relax, with a visit to the awe-inspiring cathedral which is a few steps away. In the evening, we’ll set out for an unforgettable dinner at one of the great Houses such as Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, or Lanson.

REIMS – THE CITY OF KINGS

The nickname for Reims refers to the fact that most French kings were crowned in cathedral, but Reims can also be said to be the city of the wine of kings. We’ll visit some of the famous chalk cellars, or ‘crayères’, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, apart from being perfect places to age vast quantities of Champagne in dark, humid, cool tunnels with an even temperature. Some of the houses have many kilometers of these tunnels, where their precious product can slumber during its slow, steady maturation.

Prepare to indulge in tastings and outstanding meals at the likes of Roederer, Charles Heidsieck, Ruinart, and Krug.

Dom Pérignon

champagne dame tour

Moët et Chandon

The elegance of the houses of épernay.

The town is much smaller than the city of Reims, and the pace of life appears a little slower. There is a grace to the houses lining the main avenue but don’t be deceived here too, hidden underground, are enormous stocks worth billions of dollars.

We will be treated to wonderful visits and meals by producers such as our friends at Bollinger, Moët et Chandon, and Dom Pérignon.

THE INDIVIDUALITY OF THE SMALL GROWERS

No trip to Champagne would be complete without visiting some of the myriad of small growers. The quality varies so we have picked some of the best such as Penet-Chardonnet with 6 hectares of vineyards in the Grand Cru villages of Verzy and Verzenay. Their award-winning cuvées are highly sought after in France and abroad.

The owners of Marguet at Ambonnay have decided to return to tending the land with horses, as a more gentle, respectful way of farming. It’s wonderful to see the heavy horses at work and to hear from the owners how they are striving for total harmony with nature for their large collection of Grand Cru cuvées!

Everything was 5-star.

“Champagne-Burgundy was my second Fine Vintage tour and everything was 5-Star. The accommodations were luxurious while maintaining the quaint character of the locations. There are no words to adequately describe the meals except, perhaps, Michelin star worthy. Each of wineries visited offered a new and fascinating experience to enhance the educational aspect of the tour. The overall value received far exceeds the price of the tour. The trip is action packed so I highly recommend that attendees plan time before or after for personal sightseeing and shopping.”

9:00 AM – Get on a train from Paris Gare de l’Est and head to Reims the capital of the Champagne region. The train ride is about 45 minutes to enjoy the scenic views.

10:00 AM – Upon arrival in Reims, head straight to the Reims Cathedral a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cathedral is famous for its stunning Gothic architecture and it’s the site where the kings of France were crowned.

11:30 AM – After your visit to the cathedral it’s time to head to one of the famous champagne houses in the region. Veuve Clicquot is located just a few minutes away from the cathedral, making it a quick and convenient stop. Take a guided tour of the cellars and learn about the history of the champagne house followed by a champagne tasting session.

1:00 PM –  After all the champagne tasting, you’ll probably be hungry! Head to a local brasserie in Reims and enjoy some of the region’s delicious cuisine. The brasseries in the area serve traditional French dishes like escargot, coq au vin and of course beef bourguignon. If you are interested in learning how they make these dishes, take a cooking class in Paris .

2:30 PM – After lunch it’s time to head to Epernay, the “Capital of Champagne.” One of the highlights of Epernay is the Avenue de Champagne a street lined with some of the world’s most famous champagne houses such as Moet & Chandon and Perrier-Jouet.

4:00 PM – While the big champagne houses are certainly worth a visit don’t forget about the smaller producers who offer a more intimate and personal experience. Head to a local champagne producer in Epernay and taste some of the unique and delicious champagnes produced in the region.

6:00 PM – After your day of touring Champagne, it’s time to head back to Paris. Take the train from Epernay to get back to Paris.

All you’ll need are a few advanced appointments, your walking shoes (or a quick Uber ride), and enough time to do it justice.

Below you’ll find all you need to know about setting up and enjoying Champagne tours and tasting in Reims.

How to Visit the Champagne Region

The best way to discover the region is by driving The Champagne Trail, which covers over 250 miles that wind through rolling hills, along vineyard covered valleys and past quaint little villages. All along the way you can stop to visit the growers and winemakers, to taste Champagne, and to learn as much as you like about the tradition.

There are two main cities in the Champagne region to visit, and the Champagne trail will take you between the two within just a 30 minute drive. In Reims, you can visit world-famous Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger.

Champagne region in France

In Epernay, you can spend some time walking along the Avenue de Champagne, popping in at tasting rooms along the way. The easiest way to get to the Champagne region is by car from Paris. If you’re already visiting, you can rent a car in Paris and take a day or overnight trip to Champagne.

You can take the train from Paris to Reims, but it’s not very easy to get around to the Champagne houses without a car, and you’ll definitely need a car to visit the countryside or to go into Epernay. Below you’ll find all you need to know to plan a road trip in the Champagne region, for wine tours and tasting.

Self-Guided or Group/Private Wine Tour

The first consideration you’ll probably be making is whether you want to do a self-guided or a group/private guided wine tour. If you don’t have a designated driver, or don’t wish to spit the wine instead of drinking it, you will need to take a tour or hire a driver.

There are many to choose from. You can go on a group tour, which are plentiful, often including up to 10 people and are on a pre-planned route that you can’t decide on. Tours typically go to great wineries and there’s a lot of information given, many include lunch – plus you don’t have to take care of a single detail.

Below are two group tours we recommend:

  • Small Group Full Day Tour – Your go to three different Champagne houses, where you’ll try a variety of champagnes. There’s also an included three-course lunch along the way. (8 hours)  BOOK HERE
  • Reims Afternoon Tour to Epernay – Visit the UNESCO-listed Champagne Avenue in Epernay, the historic village of Hautvillers, and visit two Champagne houses for tastings. (4.5 hours)  BOOK HERE

Private Tour

If you don’t want to go along with a bunch of other people and you’d like to have some say in the schedule, then a private tour is the way to go. Here are two that we recommend (in case there’s not a lot of availability).

What’s Included:

  • First Visit – Explanation of the manufacturing process plus cave visit followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes.
  • Visit Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon created Champagne.
  • 3-Course Restaurant Lunch
  • 2nd & 3rd Visits – A Grand Cru cellar and cave followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes at each

Tour is 8 hours, 2 people minimum. $375/pp

What’s included:

  • Return transport from Reims in a private shuttle (Mercedes Class V).
  • English-speaking driver/guide, Champagne expert
  • Visit & tasting at 2 Champagne houses
  • Guided tour of Reims Cathedral
  • Lunch reservation (payment not included)

Tour is 7 hours, 2 people minimum $599/pp

Self-Guided Tour

I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called  Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. They were originally wine merchants based in Cologne, Germany, but expanded into France when they saw potential for the region and expansion of their business. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today Mumm is spread across nearly 25 kilometers in the heart of Reims. Visitors can explore the long history of this cellar and learn about the process they’ve followed for centuries.

You’ve likely already heard of this Champagne brand, as it’s one of the most popular Champagnes being sold around the world. In case you’re thinking that means it’s not worth a visit to this Champagne house because it will be too touristy, we don’t think that’s an issue.

In fact, this was one of our favorite Champagne tours in Reims. The underground cellars of Veuve Clicquot might be one of the main reasons we love it here so much. The cellars are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

That’s not surprising when you learn that they’ve been making wine since 1772. In 1909, they bought these old underground quarrys to store their wine. There is some fascinating history in these caves, which you’ll learn all about during the tour.

After the tour of the cellar and facilities, you’ll have a chance to try the Champagne. There are a few different tickets you can purchase. Click here to see them all.

  • Discovery Tour – 26€:  45min tour followed by a single tasting of Yellow Label Brut 26€. This tour is available Tuesday to Saturday.

  • Veuve Clicquot & Rose Champagne – 40€: In 1818, Madame Clicquot was the first to make a rose champagne blend, which changed the landscape of Champagne for ever. Learn all about the Rose on this 45 min tour, followed by a tasting.

Other Champagne Houses Nearby

Not too far away from Reims, there are many more opportunities for Champagne tasting. If you’re going to be in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by a few of these:

Pressoria is the brand new sensory interpretation center for champagne wines. Housed in the walls of a former Pommery pressing center in the commune of Aÿ, the immersive tour of this emblematic cultural site will help you rediscover champagne through your five senses.

Villa Signolle

A family-run business since 1802, they offer specialist champagnes for experts and amateurs alike. They do the harvesting, handling and winemaking of all their own grapes, from one of the best terroirs in the Champagne region. Their villa is on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can taste on their terrace or in the lounge, inside a house listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Champagne Le Gallais

In 1927, Hachod Fringhian, the grandfather of Charlotte Morgain Le Gallais, obtained the Clos du Château de Boursault, which had long belonged to Madame Veuve Clicquot. Five generations later, Charlotte runs part of the estate: 7 parcels with their own characteristics, in the family vineyard, overlooking the Marne valley. The press, the cellars and the wine storehouses are also located in the clos, which guarantees a great freshness of the fruit at the time of its pressing and transformation.

How to Get from Paris to Reims

You can get to Reims from Paris by taking the TGV train. From anywhere in Paris, just get yourself to the East Railway Station. You can take the Paris subway to arrive at this station. This makes it very easy to visit Reims, no matter where in Europe you’re arriving from.

You don’t have to have tickets for the train in advance, but during busy times we do recommend buying them in advance to make sure you can get a seat. There have been times that the train has been full and we’ve had to take the next one. You can purchase tickets in advance on Trainline.com .

The train journey to Reims is only about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Epernay – another of the nearby major Champagne cities – you can continue on from Reims on the TER train, which departs every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to get there.

Descending into the Veuve Clicquot Chalk Caves

How to Get Around in Reims

One of the big questions that is often asked by tourists coming to Reims on a day trip from Paris is how to get around to the Champagne house. There are three convenient ways to get around. You can choose your method based on your own needs:

  • Walk: It’s actually quite easy to walk around Reims. The biggest hurtle is getting from the train station (or center of Reims) to the area where you find most of the Champagne houses. This is about a 2 mile walk (40 mins). If you don’t want to take this initial walk, you can take a quick Uber or taxi ride from the train station. We recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, as it’s the furthest way from town (2 miles). To walk between any of the 5 Champagne houses mentioned, it will take you about 5 minutes or less.
  • Uber or Taxi: If you can’t or don’t want to walk, you can take an uber or taxi from the train station to any of the Champagne houses. Once you’re ready to go on to the next, you can call another Uber or taxi to take you there.
  • Rent a car: There is a convenient place near the train station to rent a car for the day. In fact, it’s just a few steps outside the door to the train station. It’ll cost around 40€ to rent a car for a day. We recommend using Expedia to book your rental car .

If you’re staying overnight in Reims, you’ll quickly learn that there isn’t a huge selection of hotels. We stayed at  Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix . If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, try the  Chateau Les Crayeres .

⇒ Be sure to check out our list of the drinks you should try in France . There’s so much more to enjoy beyond the Champagne.

Thank you so much for this perfect trip plan! Sooooo helpful 🙂

Glad you found it useful!

Thank you so much for your tips! Were there any bakeries nearby to grab a snack or light lunch between tastings? I seem to only be able to see these closer to the train yet am keen to do both Pommery & Veuve tastings (and will clearly needs some food between these!)

There are a few cheese shops and bakeries in town, but not right near the Champagne houses. I would recommend picking up some cheese, bread, pastries and taking them with you, so you don’t have to find something in between.

We’re planning an overnight in Reims next month – do you have any favorite places for dinner?

We really enjoyed L’Atelier and L’Alambic, which has a fun environment.

Are children (age 13) allowed on these tours? Thanks so much for the article! Very helpful.

Yes, they are allowed.

Do you have to book a tour or can you just show up and do a tasting? We are planning a day trip for Christmas Eve. We have a tour and tasting booked for Veuve Clicquot but wanted to be able to try one or two others without doing the tour.

For most places you need to book a tour. Not many just do tastings. However, if they do you would still likely need to make a reservation for Christmas Eve. Send them an email and ask what they offer. Veuve Clicquot is actually one that offers just tastings.

Great information, thank you for your detail! I’m planning a visit, but having trouble locating information for a tour at Laurent Perrier. Do you happen to know if they do tours?!

Hi Ashley, I think that tours may be closed to the public at this time. I couldn’t find any current tour information either.

We are considering doing some biking while visiting. Question…should we do Reims on foot one day and bike to Epernay day 2? Or, would a bike in the city be an asset or a hinderance? We wish to do lots of champagne tasting and plan on visiting both areas. We are only there two full days.

Melissa, I think a bike would be a great asset in both places. If only one day, I would bike around Reims and walk around Epernay, but you can definitely bike both. It’s about a 28-mile cycle between and easy roads.

Another nice address is Champagne Roger-Constant Lemaire, we tasted 4 our delicious champagnes and we plan to go back next year. They are situated in a village called Villers sous Châtillon between Reims and Epernay.

Fantastic! Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.

Madame Clicquot

Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was born in 1777, the daughter of a textile manufacturer in Reims, Champagne. Widowed at the age of only 27, she took control of her own destiny and became one of the first modern entrepreneurs. In an era when women were excluded from the business world, she dared to assume the head of the company founded by her father-in-law in 1772, a role she undertook with passion and determination.

Her creativity and lust for innovation led to many firsts in Champagne: the first known vintage champagne; the invention of the riddling table; the first known blended rosé champagne. Three inventions that revolutionised champagne making and were widely adopted by producers, becoming the basis of modern champagne production.

Madame Clicquot made her name into a brand of excellence and had it shine the world over. Her formidable contributions earned her the nickname of "la grande dame of Champagne".

Champagne is a wine of legend. The entire history of the Veuve Clicquot House is marked by mythical wines, all of which respect the demand for quality that was the force that drove Madame Clicquot. True to this heritage, the House is proud of its motto: "Only one quality, the finest."

A short lineage of just 11 Cellar Masters has led this quest for quality, thereby ensuring the continuity of the Veuve Clicquot style: strength and complexity. Veuve Clicquot priors itself on excellence and quality. Only the juice from the cuvée (the first and most noble pressing) is used.

Foundation of the Clicquot House

Philippe Clicquot, from a family of bankers and textile merchants, already owns vinyards and decides to establish a wine business. From the very beginning, the House states its ambition of "crossing borders".

Madame Clicquot takes over the business

When François Clicquot, the founder's son, dies, his widow is 27. It takes her only a few weeks to come to a decision. She thus becomes one of the first businesswomen of modern times.

Creation of the first vintage champagne

Madame Clicquot proves her innovative prowess by creating the first recorded vintage champagne in the region.

Comet Vintage

The year 1811 brings an exceptional harvest, whose quality is attributed to a comet that flew over the area, and enabled the production of a remarkable wine: the Comet Vintage.

Shipping of 10,550 bottles to Russia

Madame Clicquot ships 10,550 bottles of 1811 Veuve Clicquot champagne to Saint Petersburg to be the first on the scene when the Russian blockade on French goods is lifted. Her champagne receives a triumphant welcome in Russia, and will be praised soon by Pushkin, Chekhov and Gogol.

Invention of the riddling table

Madame Clicquot invents the first riddling table, which guarantees a crystal-clear wine. This process continues to be used today. Madame Clicquot becomes known to her peers as “la grande dame of Champagne".

Creation of the first "Rosé d'assemblage"

Breaking away from the tradition of adding an elderberry-based preparation to create rosé champagne. Madame Clicquot creates the first "rosé d'assemblage" by blending some of her Bouzy red wines with her champagne.

Registration of the first Yellow Label Trademark

The House continues to innovate by dressing its bottles in a yellow label, an unusual colour for the time. The ‘V.Clicquot P. Werlé’ Yellow Label trademark is registered on 12 February 1877. Customers demand this distinctive, original label, which was to become one of the main distinguishing features of bottles produced by the House.

Acquisition of the Crayères

Veuve Clicquot implements new techniques and improves its wines yet again with the important oenological discoveries of the times. It extends its industrial heritage, setting up home on the outskirts of Reims in 482 crayères (chalk cellars), former quarries, where the production site and the visitors'centre are now located.

Creation of La Grande Dame and Business Woman Award

To mark its 200th anniversary, the House launches its prestigious vintage cuvee La Grande Dame and creates the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award (renamed BOLD by Veuve Clicquot), a tribute to the entrepreneurial spirit of Madame Clicquot.

Veuve Clicquot joins Louis Vuitton

LVMH (Moët-Hennessy - Louis Vuitton) is founded the following year.

Launch of Veuve Clicquot Rosé

Launched in Japan during the cherry blossom season, Veuve Clicquot Rosé, the House’s non-vintage Rosé, is so successful that the rest of the world has to wait until 2006 before the House can supply the remainder of the cuvée.

A Veuve Clicquot hidden treasure discovered in the Baltic Sea

In July 2010, some truly unique bottles of champagne, comprising 47 of Veuve Clicquot, were discovered in a shipwreck off Finland’s Åland Islands, at the mouth of the Baltic. Despite having spent almost two centuries at the bottom of the sea, their contents are extremely well preserved.

The Crayères are listed by UNESCO World Heritage

On 5 July, 2015, the World Heritage Committee announced its decision to list the Saint Nicaise Hill in Reims and its crayères, comprising those of Veuve Clicquot, as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Solaire Culture by Veuve Clicquot - The 250th anniversary exhibition

On occasion of its 250th anniversary the House presents its first ever global travelling exhibition, offering a complete immersion in Veuve Clicquot’s legacy – a journey exploring the House’s heritage, savoir-faire and cultural imprint, from 1772 to the present day.

Champagne is a relatively large area, but for the most part, visitors tend to stick to the central belt, mostly visiting Epernay and Reims and occasionally heading out of the cities to smaller towns such as Bouzy and Verzenay. With so much to see, you may be wondering how many days to spend in Champagne.

The most popular way to visit Champagne as a day trip from Paris . You can reach Reims by train in just over an hour, or if you plan to hire a car, it is just 90 miles to the east.

Whilst taking a day trip is convenient, you will have to decide between Reims and Epernay and may not have time to enjoy the champagne tours and tastings without worrying about timetables.

If you want to make the most of your time here, a weekend in Champagne is the perfect way to explore. Especially seeing as spending the night opens up a world of possibilities with wine tastings and delicious meals into the evening. 2 days in Champagne will give you enough time to visit Reims and Epernay without feeling rushed.

If you have a little longer, 3 days in Champagne allows you to really curate your stay. You could spend a long weekend visiting Champagne houses driving the ‘Champagne Route’ or visit some of the smaller towns and villages on the outskirts of the cities.

Getting To & Around Champagne

Chances are, if you are travelling using public transport, you will first need to visit Paris on your way to the Champagne region.

Reims has a very small airport, but for international flights, you will need to fly into Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport or Paris Orly Airport. From there, you can take a direct train to Reims or Epernay.

The high-speed trains (TGV) run directly through Paris and onto Reims and Epernay. You can easily travel from all four corners of France using this rail network.

From Nice to Bordeaux and even further afield from Zurich or Brussels . These trains are easy to use, and considering their efficiency, not too expensive either. You can view schedules here.

If you have your own vehicle or have chosen to rent a car, arriving in the region of Champagne is a joy. No matter where you are driving from, a Champagne road trip is the ultimate way to explore – the roads are surrounded by beautiful rolling hills covered in vineyards. You can browse car hire options here.

You can access the main cities either by the motorways, which are tolled or by the more minor country roads, which are free to drive.

It is easy enough to park for free if you are willing to walk into the city centres, or if not, there are large car parks in the epicentres of both cities. Just make sure not to get behind the wheel if you want to enjoy more than a glass of Champagne!

Finally, if you prefer to go on a tour for the duration of your time in Champagne, you can organise a 2-day tour here or a 3-day tour here which includes accommodation, tastings and transportation!

Centre of Reims

2 to 3 Days in Champagne Itinerary

Day 1 – explore reims.

We kick off our Champagne itinerary in the largest city, Reims. This bustling city is the centre of the Champagne region and makes the perfect first destination as it is easy to get to from nearby cities such as Paris.

Reims Cathedral

Reims Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, a captivating UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the stunning façade adorned with intricate sculptures. Inside, marvel at the rose windows, dazzling stained glass, and historical significance as the coronation site of 33 French kings.

You can enter the grand building free of charge, but if you are interested in the history, guided tours are also available.

Notre Dame de Reims

Palais du Tau

You’ll find the Palais du Tau next to the Reims Cathedral. This former archbishop’s palace is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It houses a remarkable collection of artefacts and treasures, including royal regalia and religious relics, reflecting its deep ties to French history and coronation ceremonies.

Place Drouet-d’Erlon

Head into the heart of the city to the Place Drouet-d’Erlon. This vibrant square in the city centre is lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes. From authentic artisan producers to restaurants serving the best local produce. This is a one-stop shop for a quick bite to eat and a couple of souvenirs to remember your trip.

Champagne Tasting

Of course, a trip to the Champagne region would only be complete with sampling the world-famous wine of the same name.

There are plenty of Champagne houses to choose from in Reims, including some of the big names such as Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot and Pommery, as well as the smaller, local houses.

If you are a wine enthusiast, you may already have a list of houses you’d like to visit, but if not, several guided tours are available such as this hour-long tour .

Vineyards in Reims

Les Faux de Verzy

The forest of Verzy may not usually be mentioned on a Champagne region itinerary, but it is one of those hidden gems that is well worth a detour as you head out of Reims.

Located in the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park near Verzy, it is a mysterious, enchanting forest that feels like it has been plucked straight out of a fairytale. It is renowned for its “Faux,” rare dwarf beech trees with twisted and contorted shapes that appear like fantastical creatures.

These naturally occurring deformities result from genetic mutations and make the forest an enchanting and otherworldly place to explore. The Faux de Verzy attracts hikers, nature lovers and photographers seeking to witness these ancient trees’ extraordinary beauty and peculiar charm.

Hautvillers

Next, we head south to the picturesque village of Hautvillers. Surrounded by the Marne Valley, Hautvillers is a beautiful village with cobblestone streets and quaint houses surrounded by vineyards.

Steeped in Champagne history, this unassuming village is where Dom Pérignon, the famous Benedictine monk, first produced champagne. He is also buried here in the chancel of the Saint-Sindulphe Abbey.

Although this is a small village, it plays an important role in the creation of Champagne. There are several houses here where you can experience tours and tastings, but if you only have time to visit one, try Champagne Dominique Bliard Labeste. Here you can discover the Premier Cru-certified Champagne with a free tasting if you buy a bottle.

As the evening draws in, head further south to our final destination for day 1 of this Champagne itinerary, Epernay. This is the perfect place to stay for your first night before exploring properly in the morning. This city is often referred to as the Capital of Champagne, but it is much smaller than Reims and has a more relaxed ambience.

Here you will find plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, serving local produce. Browse the menus to discover classics such as Coq au Vin, a traditional dish of chicken cooked in red wine, mushrooms, onions, and bacon or the more adventurous among you may want to try Escargots de Bourgogne, Burgundy snails cooked with garlic butter, a classic French delicacy.

Town of Hautvillers

Day 2 – Explore Epernay

Day 2 is primarily based around Epernay, also known as the Champagne capital. Beyond its effervescent reputation, Epernay is home to picturesque streets weaving through historic architecture and enchanting views of the Marne River.

Start the day by taking a stroll through the mediaeval city streets, soaking in the French sunshine whilst shopping for local produce (don’t miss the artisan boulangerie or the cheesemongers).

There are several cafes where you can pick up a croissant and a coffee for breakfast in the city centre, but if you want to escape the hustle and bustle, opt to take your breakfast with you and find a bench in the gardens where you can sit and enjoy nature whilst you prepare for the day ahead.

Town of Epernay

Museum of Champagne, Wine and Regional Archaeology

Before starting the tour of Champagne Avenue, it’s worth taking a short detour to the Museum of Champagne, Wine and Regional Archaeology.

Housed in the magnificent 19th century Château Perrier, here you will experience a fully immersive walkthrough of the ingredients and processes of Champagne creation and its history. Entry to the museum includes an audio tour and access to the beautifully kept gardens in the rear.

Avenue de Champagne

Epernay is home to the iconic Champagne Avenue, an opulent street renowned for its prestigious champagne houses and a must-visit stop on any trip to Champagne. Lined with elegant mansions and historic cellars, it showcases the finest sparkling wines in the world.

Discover some of the 68 miles of wine cellars below the city streets. Several full or half-day guided tours are available, or you could decide to visit one or two houses of your choosing.

Champagne houses offer tours and tastings including the titans such as Mercier, Perrier-Jouët, and Moët & Chandon all year round. Bear in mind that the tastings at these larger Champagne houses often require reservations and can feel slightly more formal than those at the smaller, boutique houses in the countryside.

If you are only going to visit one, the Mercier tour offers a truly unique cellar experience that includes a ride on their underground train.

You can also  book a champagne workshop  or  go on a private tour  with a guide to learn more about the process.

Vineyards near Eperany

Chigny les Roses

Chigny les Roses is a charming village nestled in the heart of the Champagne region. Surrounded by scenic vineyards, it offers a peaceful retreat for those who are seeking tranquillity. The village is home to several esteemed champagne producers known for their exceptional cuvées and traditional winemaking techniques.

The Champagne houses in this quaint village have a more ‘homegrown’ feel to them than those in Epernay. They tend to be on the informal side, and the tours are often led by the owner, which is an additional bonus. The area is well known for its high-quality Pinot Noir grapes, which can be found growing on endless rolling hills surrounding the village.

The village itself is beautiful and is worth exploring whether you are interested in Champagne or not. The picturesque architecture is complimented by the vibrant cherry blossom trees, narrow streets and historical monuments such as the Saint-Lié Church.

Day 3 – Dig Deeper in the Champagne Region

There are several day trip options around the Champagne region, and many of these options could be incorporated into 2 days in Champagne if you wanted to, but you may feel too rushed.

Châlons-en-Champagne

Explore this town’s historic centre with its canals and attractive public gardens. Stroll through the historic centre and admire its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the stunning Notre-Dame-en-Vaux Cathedral, another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city’s waterways, such as the Mau and Nau canals, add to its charm, providing plenty of spots for leisurely walks and picnics.

Châlons-en-Champagne

Parc Naturel Régional de la Montagne de Reims

Discover the 120,000 acres of natural haven in the national park of Reims. Stretching from Reims to Epernay, this park is full of hiking trails, bike tracks and incredible picnic spots.

It offers a paradise for nature enthusiasts, covering lush forests, rolling hills, and vine-covered landscapes. The park is also home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare orchids and protected bird species. Discover ancient chalk caves and historical sites dating back to the Gallo-Roman period.

Bouzy

Visit Bouzy to savour world-class champagne at local wineries, mainly known for their Pinot Noir grapes. Explore scenic vineyards, visit historic landmarks like the Church of Saint-Rémi, and immerse yourself in the authentic charm of this countryside gem.

Verzenay is another lovely village in the Champagne region. Ascend the iconic Lighthouse of Verzenay for panoramic vineyard views.

Explore the Champagne Museum showcasing the winemaking heritage or sip exceptional champagne at family-owned cellars and enjoy leisurely walks amidst picturesque landscapes.

I took my 4-year-old to Champagne houses in France. She had more fun than I did.

  • French people didn't seem to mind my kid tagging along everywhere in Champagne.
  • Locals were more relaxed about children in "adult" settings compared to Americans back home.
  • It reminded me a lot of "Bringing Up Bebe" the bestseller about parenting in Europe versus US.

Insider Today

I have long been a wine and spirits writer and frequent wineries, breweries, and distilleries when I travel. While on various trips with our now 5-year-old daughter, we have visited many different craft breweries , and she's even been to a distillery or two.

But wineries are often different with kids . My extended family lives near Napa Valley, California. Almost every time I make a reservation, there is a strongly worded note on the confirmation email and website about how a winery doesn't welcome kids on-site.

So when we traveled to France in March of 2024, I admit I was a tad nervous. We traveled to Paris, where we would dine at wine bars in the evenings, but it was the three days in the Champagne region where I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety.

I very much wanted to visit Champagne . I was ready to taste everything as long as my daughter could tag along.

There were so many families in the hotel

The Champagne region's main city, Reims , is a 90-minute drive by car from Paris's city center. Reims has several hotels, restaurants, and a famous Gothic-era cathedral, Notre-Dame de Reims, to visit, making it both a wine production and cultural hub. We were really there for the wine.

Related stories

When we arrived at the hotel I had booked, we realized it was so kid-friendly . In addition to the playroom I had seen online, there was a pizza oven for kids to snack on any time the restaurants weren't open. There was also an outdoor playground, pool, shop with supplies for children, and even room service.

I was quick to note that many guests had families in tow, kids coloring or working on a maze book, while the parents sat with a bottle of Champagne chilling in an ice bucket in the living room area of the lobby. We even took our drinks to the playroom where my daughter crafted an elaborate imaginary adventure with a stuffed giraffe.

The Champagne houses were also kid-friendly

I was equally delighted when booking our visits to the Champagne houses. Champagne Ruinart markets itself as a family-friendly winery. When we arrived, my daughter had a choice of specialty fruit juices to try as we tasted wines.

On the tour of the awe-inspiring chalk caves, a defining characteristic of the Champagne region's geography, she learned all about how the caves were used by children to walk safely to school during World War II.

At Champagne Ayala, a winery in village Aÿ, my daughter played tour guide with our actual tour guide. Upon greeting, she was handed her own notebook and pen to "doodle" what she saw and a flashlight to assist our guide through the immense and cavernous wine cellar, which runs 24 miles underground. She earned applause for her work from the group, which were all fellow adults.

The hospitality team at Dom Perignon toured her through the historic Abbey of Hautvillers, where the house's namesake in the 17th century, and then served her her first glass of Coca-Cola as a treat in a guest room filled with paraphernalia from the brand's various collaborations with Lady Gaga and Lenny Kravitz.

We visited a small grower Champagne house, a word for wineries run by those who own the vineyards. There, at Champagne Michel Gonet's Villa Signolle, she was given orange juice and played a game with the host while my husband and I participated in a blind-tasting competition of their Champagnes.

My daughter had a blast

The entire experience reminded me of "Bringing Up Bebe, " the best-selling book that's become a must-read for plenty of millennial moms. In the book, American author Pamela Druckerman tackles the cultural differences she observed between American and French parents. Some elements of the book lean toward infrastructural differences — childcare is more accessible and less expensive than the United States — and others are very societal: in France, the author gleaned, children are simply a more welcome part of society.

When we returned to Paris, we spent a day with an American friend who recently moved to Paris. Many of her observations about life in the French capital and her own visits to French wineries mirrored our own.

Our daughter, however, didn't feel one bit of my motherhood anxiety. To her, it was all an adventure. She still talks about the playroom at the hotel, wandering through the caves, and the big church where the choir was singing during our visit. She saw stained glass visits for the first time and ate her weight in croissants. And, of course, the time she got the special Coca-Cola drink.

Taylor Swift's London Shows Set Records for Mobile Data Use Among Fans

Exclusive: The August and Champagne Problems moments saw mobile data use peak during the Wembley Eras Tour Shows.

champagne dame tour

Instagram was the most popular app among Swifties attending the Eras Tour at Wembley.

You'll know it if you've been to one of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour shows -- when you're standing in the stadium gasping, singing, cheering, crying and clapping, you feel like you're part of something special, historical... unprecedented even. No wonder then, that as the global superstar wrapped up the European leg of her tour, she was celebrating breaking records across the continent.

In London, Swift became the first solo artist to play eight shows at Wembley Stadium on the same tour. While I was at the show on Saturday night, just meters away from the stage, I had no idea she was breaking another record in my presence. Her Eras Tour show that night saw the most mobile data used at a standalone show at Wembley in history.

As is so often the case with Swift, she was breaking a record she herself had set (back in June). And to put it into perspective, the 5.58 terabytes that fans consumed would be enough to stream her entire music catalog 4,500 times, which would take more than 10 years. This makes Swift the most popular artist to have ever played at the UK's national stadium, according to data usage. Seven of the top 10 most popular events, again going by mobile data, to be held at Wembley are Eras Tour shows -- and that includes sporting events such as major soccer finals.

Wembley is the largest sports venue in the UK, and the second largest in Europe. Its usual capacity is around 90,000 people, but with pitch standing, around 92,000 people attended each Eras Tour show at the stadium. Still, there were many more thousands of people watching from home, thanks to some generous Swifties in attendance livestreaming from their phones, as well as posting pictures and updates in real time on social media.

If you're wondering what most people were using their phones for during the show, mobile provider EE shared with CNET that Instagram was the most popular app, accounting for 16% of total data used, followed by Snapchat (11%), TikTok (8%) and Facebook (8%). EE, one of the biggest UK mobile networks, sponsors Wembley and provides all the network infrastructure for the stadium.

Two of my own favorite moments from the show -- Swift's rendition of Champagne Problems on piano and her performance of August, which sees her twirling through an array of sunset hues like a woodland nymph -- saw the biggest spikes in data use.

Prior to the Eras Tour, the artist that generated the most data use among fans at Wembley was Harry Styles in 2023. Data use during one of his concerts hit 4.49TB. But Swift's last fives shows all beat that record, with the breakdown as follows:

  • Aug. 15: 5.16TB
  • Aug. 16: 5.18TB
  • Aug. 17: 5.58TB
  • Aug. 19: 4.6TB
  • Aug. 20: 5.581TB

In total, more than 1 million fans used more than 65TB across Swift's UK shows. That just goes to show the insatiable appetite for content about and around the Eras Tour. Following the grand finale of the European leg this week, Swift will return to play more shows in the US this October, before finally wrapping up the tour in Canada in December.

If you need your Taylor fix in the meantime, don't forget you can watch The Eras Tour Movie on Disney Plus anytime you like.
