If you live in the Sunshine State, you will most likely be familiar with cruise ship ports in Florida. And you will be lucky enough to be able to hop in the car and drive to your cruise port – even if it’s a few hours away. Your cruise packing and luggage gets tossed into the trunk, and all you need to do is fill up the gas tank and book your parking spot at the port.

For the rest of us living abroad or out of state, we will need to fly in and make our way to the cruise port using public transport or private transfers. And we may not be as familiar as Florida residents with the cruise ports, how to get there, or what to expect.

Arriving at the port city the same day your cruise departs versus a few days early

We have been in the travel industry for many years. And we have helped thousands of customers book their dream vacation. So, of course, we have some great stories to tell.

And we also have horror stories. There is nothing more disappointing than being stranded at the port as you watch your cruise ship sail off into the sunset – without you on board.

And it happens more often than you may like to think. If you usually fly in on the day your cruise departs and have never missed a check-in, then indeed you are lucky.

Hoping that your time and budget allow, we advise you to spend some time in your departure city before you start your cruise.

If you are a new visitor to the city, or even a returning guest, these pre-cruise days can be a fantastic way to start your vacation.

And that means booking a flight into your departure city at least three days before your cruise start date. Fly into your departure city a few days before your cruise start date

Flying early into your departure city means that:

• If your flight is delayed or, worse yet, canceled, you can reschedule your flight plans and arrive in time for your cruise, albeit you may miss a hotel night or two.

If this happens, do two things:

• Ask the airline staff who help you rebook your flight ticket about getting a “Flight Delay or Cancellation Certificate.” You may need to download this from the airline’s website once you return home after your vacation. Request a meal voucher or, if necessary, overnight accommodation at an airport hotel while you wait for your next flight. If it’s the airline’s fault that your flight was delayed or canceled, then they are responsible for taking care of you.
• Call your hotel once you have a rescheduled flight and inform them of your approximate time of arrival. Be sure they hold your room for the remaining nights for you so they do not think of you as a “no show”. When you arrive at the hotel, you can discuss a possible refund for the missed night. If they have a “no refund” policy (it’s not their fault your flight was delayed), then get written confirmation that you did not occupy the room for the missed night. Then refer back to your travel insurance provider for compensation when you get home.
• It will be less stressful if your flights do not go according to plan knowing that you have allowed yourself extra time.
• Use the extra time to get to know a new city, experience the culture, try the food, and shop a little more before your cruise starts. If you are lucky, it could be a bucket list destination that you have always wanted to visit. So try and budget for the additional cost of extra hotel nights and some meals. You won’t be sorry.

Flying the same day into your departure city as your cruise leaves port means that you are 100% relying on the airlines to make sure that:

• Your flight is not cancelled, due to bad weather, aircraft technical problems, a delay at the destination airport which has a knock on effect, or a personnel strike by the airline staff.
• The flight does not suffer a long delay due to technical problems, overbooking, late passengers, broken luggage conveyor belts, etc.
• Your luggage arrives and does not go missing. You don’t want to end up boarding your cruise ship with only the clothes on your back. But it’s happened to many.

You are also assuming that your transportation at other end to get you from the airport to your cruise port works according to plan. And that they are no delays, accidents, traffic chaos or strikes that could delay you.

Conclusion: Many of us have traveled on holiday for years without a hitch. But many of us have also experienced delays and disappointments, and lost money in the process due to failed planning.

Why take the risk? Avoid flying into your departure point on the same day your cruise leaves port.

At what time should you schedule your return flight home after your cruise?

Everyone hates checking in too early for a flight and having to wait hours at the airport before boarding. It is often an expensive endeavor as airport shopping and restaurants are not the cheapest. And it’s even more complicated when traveling with children.

Timing your flight home after your cruise ship has arrived in port can be tricky.

Too early and you risk missing your flight when the disembarkation takes much longer than expected, and there are queues for taxis or transfer buses.

And scheduling a flight very late on the day of arrival into the port may mean you will end up with a long wait at the airport.

If you book a cruise package with the cruise line, that is, flight and cruise, then very often, a transfer is included. The cruise line will never want you to miss your flight so you will have priority disembarkation and they will get you to your departure airport in good time. Sometimes way too early but you cannot control this.

But if you are booking your own flight, here is a list of things to think about to minimize the risk of anything going wrong when you just want to get home. And the general rule is to err on the side of caution.

Your flight booking – getting to the airports from the cruise ship ports in Florida

• Check which port your cruise ship arrives at after your cruise (yes, it can be different to your departure port). Then check how far the airport is from the cruise ship port. Google maps is great at giving you the distance and estimated transfer time by road.
• Check the time of day your cruise ship is estimated to dock at the cruise port .
• Remember the cruise ship has to clear customs and be secured before passenger disembarkation starts. This can often be up to 2 hours.
• Check your latest check in time for your flight with the airline . International travelers can expect to need to check in 2 hours before flight departure. Domestic travel is a little shorter. But many, many airlines close their gates from around 45 minutes before take off, so better to be cautious and turn up early rather than late. Remember you need to check in, leave your luggage, get through security checks and find the right gate number.
• If your cruise ship docks early in the morning , the general rule is book a flight which leaves, at the earliest, lunchtime. Or longer if you have a long transfer to the airport (think of Ravenna port outside of Venice for example, where some cruise ships now dock instead of Venice Island. Transfer time from Ravenna port to Venice Airport is estimated to be around 2.5 hours (150km).
• If your cruise ship docks after lunch the general rule is to book an early evening flight.
• Always book a flight ticket that is flexible. That means one that is both cancellable and rebookable. If anything goes wrong – you get sick, you get delayed, etc. you can change your air ticket or get a refund (often against a fee that the airline withhold). Top this up with great travel insurance. So if things do not go as planned, you don’t lose your money on your flights or at the very least you have the option to rebook to a new flight.
• Consider extending your vacation and staying one or two nights at a hotel after your cruise instead. That way there are no issues with flights the same day as port arrival.

There are four major cruise ports in Florida.

• Port of Miami – The port is located in Miami , South Florida. About 3.5 km (2 miles) from downtown Miami, 9km (6 miles) from South Beach and 16km (10 miles) from Miami International Airport (MIA).

• Downtown Miami hotel to Port of Miami – Ask your hotel to order a taxi for your transfer to the port. Luckily PortMiami is very close to downtown and therefore the taxi transfer will be quick and relatively inexpensive. And it is the easiest option when carrying suitcases.
• South Beach hotel to Port of Miami – here again we recommend get a taxi for your transfer to the port. It’s close by but you cannot walk it. It is the easiest option with cruise baggage.

Port Everglades

• Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades – It’s a 20 minute taxi ride to the port from Fort Lauderdale Airport. Alternatively there are shuttle services outside arrivals. The cost will be even less as you share your ride with other passengers.
• Miami Airport to Port Everglades – This journey is about 45 minutes by car. Taxis are the most expensive way to travel costing around USD$90 dollars for the trip. Which is fine is you are sharing the ride between 4 people. Otherwise opt for the cheaper option of the airport shuttle bus leaving every hour. Book your ticket for about USD$25 per person before you leave home.
• Arriving by car and parking at Port Everglades – There are 2 parking garages that service parking at t he port. You cannot prepay or prebook, just turn up and park. Choose the parking garage closest to your cruise terminal number.
• Downtown Fort Lauderdale hotel to Port Everglades – It’s a 20 minute car ride from downtown hotels to the port. Use a taxi or a car service.
• Downtown Miami hotel to Port Everglades – There is a shuttle service from designated stops downtown that takes about 1 hour to get to the port. Ticket prices are about USD$25 per person. Alternatively use taxi for around USD$100 or a less expensive Uber ride.
• South Beach hotel to Port Everglades – Ask your hotel to book a taxi. It’s the easiest and most reliable way to get you to the port on time from South Beach.

Port Canaveral

• Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral – There are shared shuttle rides from the airport to the cruise port at Port Canaveral and we recommend you book your place in advance. The fee is around $25 per person. If you are more than 4 or than a large taxi or private car may be worth the cost at around USD$130 for a one way journey.

Check which cruise terminal number your ship departs from to get the correct parking area. Then you can just make the short walk with your luggage to board your ship. Selecting a departure port is no easy task since you have to consider how you’ll get to the port, parking costs, hours of operation, and which cruise lines depart from it.

How To Get To Miami's Cruise Port:

There are a variety of ways for you to get to Port Miami. Cruise line shuttle services are available by request with Azamara, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean, and Seabourn.

Public transportation is the cheapest option and includes Metrorail’s Orange Line from Miami International Airport, as well as the Metrorail Green Line. Both rail lines will take you to Government Center, where you can take the Metromover to Freedom Tower Station. From there, you can take the free Coral Way Trolley to cross the PortMiami bridge. The trolley makes three stops on-port every 15 minutes at Terminals J and E, as well as PortMiami Administrative Offices.

Taxis, ride share services, and rental cars are available as well.

PortMiami's Hours of Operation:

Port Miami is open from 6:00 AM - 5:00 PM. We recommend arriving early because the port gets crowded, especially during peak cruise season.

A variety of hotels near PortMiami offer dedicated cruise port shuttles. InterContinental Miami is 0.7 miles from the port and offers a shuttle service for $8 per adult, and no charge for children under 6 years old. Comfort Inn & Suites Miami International Airport is a bit further at 7.8 miles from PortMiami but offers a shuttle service for free, available to all guests. Comfort Suites Miami Airport North is another great option, standing 8.5 miles from PortMiami and also offering a free shuttle service directly to the port.

Take the bus to Whiting Street at Tampa Street, and walk east one block to Downtown Tampa Station. From there, you can take the 800 line to Publix Station, which is a brief 5-minute walk from Port Tampa Bay.

Traffic, congestion, transportation and information make Miami one of the cruise ports to have solid plans. The Doubletree by Hilton on Biscayne Bay is the best place to stay before a cruise in Miami. A more affordable option is Comfort Inn and Suites but the amenities are much different.

However, allow plenty of time for parking, customs, port entry, and all the lines for a particular cruise. One nearby hotel that is highly rated for pre-cruise stays is the Home2 Suites by Hilton . It’s our favorite.

Our thoughts about Port Canaveral cruise port : This is our second favorite place to leave for a Florida cruise. We believe it is a great place to come prior to a cruise because of the wide range of things to do near the port. As the busiest cruise port in Florida, Port Canaveral handles traffic well.

Our best recommendation for a hotel to stay at prior to a cruise is the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina less than 10 minutes to the Port. It is waterfront on the Intracoastal and they have shuttles to the port.

Nearest Airport : Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) is next to the cruise port. The best airfares into FLL are here .

Our thoughts about Port Everglades : While we live just a few minutes from the Port of Tampa and Fort Lauderdale is 4 hours away, Port Everglades is our favorite Florida cruise port. The wide range of cruises offered from this port makes the difference.

Places to Stay When Taking a Cruise from the Port of Tampa

We know the area. Our favorite place to stay near the Port of Tampa is the Water Street Marriott . The location is on Riverwalk and the Hillsborough River. A more affordable option is the Best Western Tampa about 3 miles away.

Nearest Airport : Tampa International Airport (TPA) is just 20 minutes from the Port of Tampa. Traffic is reasonable. The best airfares into TPA are here .

Our thoughts on the Port of Tampa : We love the Tampa Port and everything around it. However, the port is small compared to the three previous ports above. The number of cruises departing from Tampa is a fraction of the others. However, a small port means less parking hassles and fewer traffic problems.

Ports 5 & 6 – Key West, Jacksonville and West Palm Beach

Both Jacksonville and West Palm Beach cruise ports have limited sailings. However, they may fit your plans or needs when it comes to choosing the perfect cruise. It should be noted that Key West is a cruise port, but it is a destination and not a port for embarkation.

Jacksonville:

• Limited Options: While it does have cruise activity, Jacksonville doesn’t boast the same level of variety and frequency as larger Florida ports like Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
• Development Potential: JAXPORT has plans to expand its cruise facilities in the future, which could increase the number of cruise lines and destinations offered.

Travel options to reach your ship are numerous – shuttle services from the airport, rideshares, public transportation and personal vehicles (with plenty of parking available).

Traveling from Miami International Airport to PortMiami takes up to around 20 minutes, depending on the traffic, and the distance is just over 8 miles. A taxi can cost up to $33.

The former is a top-rated facility for stewarding aquatic and terrestrial animals and their habitats “from tree level to sea level.” The wharf showcases the city’s downtown waterfront with retail shops, eateries, and live events.

Traveling from the Tampa International Airport to Port Tampa Bay takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the traffic, which is just over 10 miles. A taxi to the port can cost around $35, which is a flat fee and could change, so always ask first.

Upon arrival, passengers can grab last-minute shopping items and some tasty treats from food trucks located along the waterfront area. Ample seating, ADA-compliant facilities, and free Wi-Fi at all terminals make this a comfortable port.

Nestled along the St. Johns River in the upper northeastern part of the state sits  JAXPORT  (or the Jacksonville Port Authority). While its main area of commerce is as a container port (Florida’s largest), one passenger terminal welcomes voyagers to their next cruise adventure.

This port, while up-to-date, feels like a vacation from another era, in a positive way! There are fewer crowds, ease of access, and only Carnival Cruise Line ships at this small Florida port.

Taxis and minivans offer services from the airport, and passengers driving their own vehicles will find the parking area is well-lighted, fenced and secured 24 hours per day. Passengers arriving at the 15,000-square-foot embarkation area can pick up drinks, snacks, and miscellaneous items at a small shop in the terminal. Ships leaving from this small port are generally boarding for four- and five-day excursions to the Bahamas. 

While traveling through the “flip side of Florida” (as Jacksonville calls itself), enjoy 22 miles of beaches and 40 miles of the Intercoastal Waterway – more shoreline than any other city in the country.

Fishing expeditions, the street arts scene along with rotating exhibits in the Cork Arts District and taste creations from a new generation of Southern chefs await. Also, make time to visit one of the twelve museums in the city offering impressive collections of the culture, history, art, and science from the area.

Port of Palm Beach

Discover a unique adventure at this location with only one terminal and one berth – a land and sea combination sure to please everyone in your group. Port of Palm Beach is located 80 miles north of Miami and is even further from Port Canaveral at 135 miles out.

This Florida cruise port is home to mainly one mainstream cruise line created from a partnership between the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line and Margaritaville at Sea. However, there is a multitude of ways to create just the right package for your next cruise vacation.

Year-round, book cruises for two-night/three-day excursions to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island aboard a Margaritaville at Sea ship. Most passengers take this opportunity to “catch a ride” on a beautifully appointed floating resort and book a stay on the island for an extended tropical getaway.

Explore pristine beaches, dive crystal clear waters ( Insider tip : Unexso to swim with dolphins!), golf, go boating and fishing, try your luck at the casinos, stay out late at the nightclubs, and shop for duty-free souvenirs.

Before and after the cruise, take a short drive from the terminal to Manatee Lagoon for family fun, interactive events, and a chance to see these gentle giants of the sea. For another nature experience, Singer Island offers hiking, biking, snorkeling, and a nature center for the eco-adventurers.

Cruise passengers whose itineraries include a stop at this port of call are in for a treat! Located at the southernmost tip of the continental United States, this Florida cruise port lies at the end of a chain of islands.

The surrounding community is a blend of cultures, artistic endeavors and culinary delights celebrating diversity. Visitors can easily explore all that the town of Key West has to offer.

Strategically, there are three piers utilized by several hundred visiting ships each year, that are sailing to or from the Caribbean. Two of the piers (Mallory Square and Pier B) are within an easy walk of downtown. The third (Outermole) is only a 10-minute shuttle ride away.

Key West  can at times be a stop for transatlantic and repositing cruises and is frequented by ships that are part of the Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and a few more lines throughout the year.

When disembarking at the modern terminals, stop at some of the kiosks to inquire about guided tours (such as sandbar hopping, boating, paddling and haunted tours) or set out on a self-guided walking excursion.

Grab a bite to eat at one of the many eateries that range from upscale dining to locally-owned seafood shacks. Head over to Duval Street for a vibrant nightlife scene complete with live music and tasty tropical drinks. Spend time in nature at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, Key West Aquarium and stroll the beaches.

Get the camera ready for a snap at the iconic Southernmost Point Buoy and join the sunset celebration at Mallory Square close to the ship. Insider tip: Take the opportunity to see original works of art and literature at The Audubon House and The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, respectively.

Cruises from Florida are the most popular options for travelers who wish to sail from the United States. It was only this year that Miami was dethroned as the busiest cruise port in the world — replaced by rival Florida home port, Port Canaveral.

Not only do cruises from Florida allow you to see some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas, but they also allow travelers to experience some of the biggest and best cruise ships sailing right now. The largest cruise ship afloat, Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas, sails from Port Canaveral; family-friendly rival Disney Wish, the newest Disney cruise ship in a decade, also home ports in Florida.

Families planning multigenerational getaways, couples seeking child-free vacations and groups of friends looking to have a good time can all find their perfect ship and itinerary departing from one of Florida's six departure ports.

To give you a taste of the diversity of options available from the Sunshine State, here are our picks for the best cruises from Florida.

Wonder of the Seas to the Western Caribbean 

Wonder of the Seas , Royal Caribbean's flagship and the largest cruise ship in the world, departs weekly from Port Canaveral (the cruise port closest to Orlando). The ship sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries, stopping at tropical destinations like Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

While the islands offer plenty of fun in the sun, the ship itself is filled with tons of family-friendly activities. Siblings or parents and kids can race each other to the bottom of the twin waterslides, named Typhoon and Cyclone. If you prefer to stay dry, hop into the Ultimate Abyss tunnel slide, where riders will glide down 10 stories of darkness before bottoming out on the ship's Boardwalk.

Kids ages 6 months to 17 years old have their own hangouts with dedicated programming supervised by fun counselors. While the kids play with new friends, adults can veg out in the glass-encased Solarium, relaxing on padded loungers or in a bubbling hot tub.

When it's time to come together for a meal, you'll please all palates at The Mason Jar , one of Royal Caribbean's newest restaurants that highlights Southern comfort food. The menu teems with tasty dishes like fried chicken, gumbo and po'boys that will leave you completely satisfied. Brunch here comes with a side of live country music.

Freedom of the Seas to the Bahamas

Cruisers who are loyal to Royal Caribbean or those who want to test the waters with the brand without the commitment of a seven-night sailing can enjoy short, three-night sailings on Freedom of the Seas out of Miami.

The quickie voyages take you to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and a day spent on Royal Caribbean's stunning island is reason enough to book this cruise. At this private Bahamian beach resort, cruisers can ride the slides at Thrill Water Park, rent a beachside cabana for a mix of shade and sun, or float about in a sheltered lagoon. A barbecue lunch is included, and passengers can utilize their onboard drink package.

The 4,635-passenger ship provides fun around every corner. Challenge one another to a round of minigolf, show off your skills on the FlowRider surf simulator or test your muscle on the rock climbing wall. Entertainment on Freedom of the Seas ranges from Royal Caribbean's iconic ice skating shows to live music in the pub. Pool parties, outdoor movies and laser tag are also included with your cruise fare.

With so much to do on board, plus the short sailing times, cruises on this ship can have a distinct party vibe. There's a reason that the College Party Cruise charter company uses Freedom of the Seas for its March spring break sailings.

No cruise is complete without great food, and this ship offers 11 different dining venues highlighting such cuisines as Italian, Mexican and Japanese.

Carnival Elation to the Bahamas 

Carnival Elation is unique because it's the only ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville. Its four- and five-day sailings to the Bahamas stop at Nassau and a second destination that varies. Choose from cruises to Bimini, Freeport, Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays — the latter two are private beaches operated by the Carnival Corporation.

The 2,606-passenger cruise ship is one of Carnival Cruise Line 's smallest and oldest ships. Aboard the intimate vessel allows you to get to know the crew and other cruisers. Popular hangouts include Carnival's beloved Alchemy Bar, where you can order cocktails at a vintage pharmacy-themed bar.

For outdoor dining, head to Guy's Burger Joint, created by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Order a loaded burger and perfectly golden-brown fries, then head to the Lido Deck near the pool for great people-watching.

Entertainment on this small ship is still plentiful. Cruisers can splash around at WaterWorks, the family-friendly water playground, or head up to the adults-only Serenity Retreat for a quieter experience. The Punchliner Comedy Club hosts a variety of comedians that will have kids and adults laughing throughout the night. Catch a live production in the main theater or sing along with the pianist at the popular Piano Bar.

Carnival Mardi Gras to the Eastern Caribbean

If you'd prefer to sample one of Carnival's newest and largest ships, you can sail from Port Canaveral on the line's Mardi Gras . Its Eastern Caribbean sailings visit island destinations like St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. Mardi Gras' six- to eight-night itineraries provide a good mix of sea days at the start and end of the sailings.

The impressive ship is known for its party atmosphere, which is highlighted by an onboard zone themed to New Orleans' French Quarter. Here, passengers will find Emeril's Bistro 1396, an homage to NOLA's cuisine developed in partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Don't miss the Brass Magnolia and the Fortune Teller bars, which start hopping when the sun goes down.

The Ultimate Playground on the ship's top deck is where adrenaline junkies and sports lovers will want to hang out. You'll get all the thrills with a ride on BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, or take a lap around the elevated ropes course. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, minigolf and a full-size basketball court await.

Disney Magic to the Bahamas 

When the summer of 2024 rolls around, Disney Magic will set sail from Disney Cruise Line 's newest home port in Florida, Fort Lauderdale. The ship's shorter three- and four-night Bahamian itineraries include a visit to Nassau and either Castaway Cay, Disney's stunning private island, or Lighthouse Point, Disney's newest island destination . Longer five-night sailings include a stop at both private beaches or a double dip at Castaway Cay, along with a day at Nassau.

Disney Magic is among Disney's smaller ships, but fans love it for its intimate size and fewer crowds. Beloved Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcome you aboard with hugs and photo ops throughout your sailing.

Guests rotate each night among the ship's three dining rooms, including Rapunzel's Royal Table — inspired by Disney's animated "Tangled." There's also Animator's Palate, an homage to Disney's animation studios. You'll have the same servers at all restaurants, so they get to know your family and your dining preferences. At night the Walt Disney Theater features Broadway-caliber shows, like "Tangled: The Musical."

Families looking for some time apart will love that Disney has an included kids club where younger cruisers can enjoy fun activities under the watchful eye of the ship's youth staff. The Oceaneer Club features themed areas like Andy's Room from "Toy Story" and Tinkerbell's home at Pixie Hollow. Kids can also take superhero lessons from Thor. The Oceaneer Lab offers baking classes inspired by "Ratatouille" and sessions where kids learn how to draw their favorite Disney characters.

Adults can use their free time to savor a meal at the adults-only Italian restaurant, Palo, or kick back in the ship's multiple bars and live music venues.

Holland America's Rotterdam to the Southern Caribbean

Holland America is known for its elegant ships and longer itineraries, such as Rotterdam 's nine- to 16-night Southern Caribbean options out of Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship in the fleet, Rotterdam sails to Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and Half Moon Cay on nine-night voyages, while its longer 16-day sailings add on Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, and Key West.

With just 2,668 guests onboard, Rotterdam is homey and charming with a touch of luxury. The ship doubles down on live music; a live band plays all the rock hits at the Rolling Stone Rock Room, while an eight-piece band gets everyone on their feet when they play R&B favorites at B.B. King's Blues Club. For some daytime activity, the competition is on at the ship's pickleball courts , where cruisers can take lessons or play in tournaments against their shipmates.

Expect impeccable dining at specialty restaurants like Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French-inspired restaurant from Holland America's master chef Rudi Sodamin; Canaletto, an Italian bistro offering all of the classics; and Tamarind, where diners can sample regional dishes from China, Japan and Southeast Asia. For daytime snacks, don't miss the Dutch pancake bites called poffertjes or the French fries with peanut dipping sauce.

Norwegian Encore to the Eastern Caribbean

If you're looking for a weeklong cruise out of Miami, consider sailing on Norwegian Encore to the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and Tortola. Each island offers spectacular sandy beaches that give way to sparkling blue waters, plus options for water sports, museum visits and hikes to the top of lush mountaintops.

The itinerary also includes a stop at Norwegian Cruise Line 's private island, Great Stirrup Cay. There you can enjoy a relaxing beach day, where all you have to worry about is getting back to the ship on time from the tender dock.

On board the ship, zip around the Encore Speedway in a go-kart, play laser tag in an Atlantis-themed arena, splash around the AquaPark or experience virtual reality games inside the Galaxy Pavilion. For a calmer diversion, purchase a pass to the Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only retreat with lounge chairs, umbrellas and specialty food and drinks. The pass is good for the entire cruise, so you can come and go as you please.

There's a wide range of dining options, including complimentary and extra-charge restaurants. Belly up to the Local Bar and Grill for classic pub dishes and cocktails on tap. If you're willing to pay extra for a meal, Q Texas Smokehouse is worth a stop. The a la carte restaurant serves authentic Texas-style barbecue and all the classic sides. After dinner service, the restaurant turns into a country dance club with a live band and an open dance floor.

Celebrity Apex to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex sets sail from Fort Lauderdale to some of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean. From November 2023 through April 2024, Apex will offer weeklong sailings to Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic. Two sea days give you time to relax and have fun on the ship.

What makes this itinerary special is that it features later all-aboard times in San Juan and St. Maarten, allowing guests to see the islands as they come alive in the sunset glow.

Celebrity Apex is part of Celebrity Cruises ' Edge class of ships, with standout features like high-end design and modern touches. One of Apex's highlights is the Magic Carpet, a suspended lounge that hangs off the side of the ship. When it's positioned by the pool deck, you can stop in to sip cocktails; when it's at water level, it serves as a platform for easy boarding of tender boats.

There are lots of chic spots to chill with your travel companions. Savor some kebabs or a flatbread pizza among live plants in the ship's Rooftop Garden, then watch the sun sink into the sea at the aptly named Sunset Bar. Submerge yourself in a martini-shaped hot tub out on the pool deck or enjoy a dip on a rainy day in the covered adults-only Solarium.

With 29 different food and beverage options on Apex, cruisers will never be bored at meal times. Specialty dining includes Le Grand Bistro, themed after a traditional Parisian boulangerie-patisserie, and the Eden Restaurant, with its tasting menu of international dishes.

If you don't want to spend extra money on food, stick with the ship's four themed main dining rooms and the Mast Grill, which serves juicy burgers and hearty salads. The Oceanview Cafe serves made-to-order breakfast and lunch offerings, while dinner features a rotating menu with international flair.

Tampa cruise port guide: Sail away from Port Tampa Bay

N estled on Florida's west coast, Tampa's cruise port is situated on the bay, rather than directly on the Gulf of Mexico. Port Tampa Bay serves five cruise lines and offers a variety of sailings to destinations like the Caribbean , the Bahamas , Mexico and Central America.

Tampa is a fantastic place to begin or end your cruise. It offers easy access to international airports, premier hotels from major brands and boutique options, and restaurants to suit any culinary desire. Add a few days to your vacation to explore what the city and its surrounding areas have to offer, including pristine Gulf Coast beaches, Central Florida's nearby theme parks and incredible museums for adults and children.

Port Tampa Bay cruise port overview

The three cruise terminals at the port of Tampa are terminals 2, 3 and 6.

The best place to view a map of the three cruise line terminals is on the Port Tampa Bay website. Click one of the three terminals, and you'll be taken to a Departure Guide that includes a map.

The port offers restrooms, vending machines and luggage storage through a third party. Several restaurants and bars are a few minutes' walk from the terminals.

All cruise terminals are ADA-accessible, with elevators and ramps. Availability permitting, cruise staff can help transport passengers in wheelchairs to and from the vessel.

Cruise lines sailing from the Tampa cruise port

Five cruise lines sail from Port Tampa Bay and utilize the three cruise terminals:

• Royal Caribbean
• Celebrity Cruises
• Norwegian Cruise Line
• Margaritaville at Sea

Tampa's port does not have set terminals reserved for specific cruise lines, as you might find in other Florida ports. The calendar feature on Port Tampa Bay's website can help you find which terminal is assigned to your ship on departure day. Click on your ship's name on the calendar square for the day you embark, and you'll see its terminal at the top of the pop-up box that appears. You'll also see an option to purchase on-site parking for your cruise in the same box.

Airports near the Tampa cruise port

If arriving by air for your cruise, you can choose to fly into several airports close to the Tampa Bay cruise port.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is the closest option, approximately 7 miles and a 15-minute drive to Port Tampa Bay. Major airlines that fly here include Air Canada, Alaska, American, British Airways, JetBlue, Southwest, United and Virgin Atlantic.

If you're looking for lounge access, TPA has a Delta Sky Club at Concourse E.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is farther away but might have more affordable and desirable flight schedules for your needs. This popular Central Florida destination is approximately 85 miles from Tampa's cruise port. Though it can be just an hour-and-fifteen-minute drive without traffic, plan for considerable congestion on the highways between these two major cities. With traffic, reaching Port Tampa Bay from MCO airport can take up to two hours.

Over 40 airlines travel to MCO, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Alaska, American Airlines, British Airways, Delta, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Southwest, United and Virgin Atlantic.

At MCO, check out The Club lounge if you're heading to terminals A or B, where prebooking is available for a fee though often unnecessary. Alternatively, visit the Plaza Premium Lounge at Terminal C. Use your credit card perks for lounge access before your flight.

If you're spending time elsewhere in Florida before or after your cruise, you might want to consider Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), a smaller international airport. It's 60 miles, or an hour's drive, south of the port. Air Canada, Allegiant, American Airlines, Avelo, Breeze, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United fly from here.

Regardless of which airport you choose, you can minimize your travel costs by checking credit card perks. Flight companion passes are available if you're traveling as a couple with the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card . It offers a $99 Companion Fare (plus taxes and fees from $23) each account anniversary after spending $6,000 or more within the prior anniversary year.

If you plan your personal and business credit card spending wisely with a Southwest card , you can earn nearly two years of buy-one-get-one flights, minus taxes and fees.

How to get to Port Tampa Bay

You can get to the cruise port via independent companies, public transportation and hotel shuttles.

Ride-shares, cruise transfers and private shuttles are your best travel options from TPA to the cruise port. Though you can utilize public transportation with a combination of SkyConnect from the airport to a public bus, the travel time takes more than an hour with transfers and bus stops. On the other hand, a vehicle that takes you directly from the airport to the port only takes between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Cruise line transfers

All of the cruise lines that sail from Port Tampa Bay, except Margaritaville at Sea, offer transfers from the TPA airport to the cruise port for an additional fee, starting at $24.99 per person each way. None of the cruise lines offer transfers from MCO to the Tampa cruise port.

Hotel shuttles

A deciding factor for where you stay before or after your cruise might be the convenience of a shuttle between the hotel and the cruise terminal. Inquire before booking if the hotel you're considering offers a shuttle service and if so, whether it's complimentary or not.

Hilton's Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown Tampa offers a free shuttle within three miles, including the cruise port, less than two miles away. While Tampa Marriott Water Street does not offer a shuttle, Tampa's free TECO Streetcar has a stop right in front of the hotel and at the cruise terminal.

Independent airport shuttles, van and car services

If you want to set up a private transfer, preplan and book a van, limo or sedan depending on the number of people in your party and your comfort preference.

Mears is a popular and reputable company in Central Florida that services Orlando and Tampa. The company's sizable fleet includes hundreds of luxury sedans, vans and limos. Use Mears' online quote system to budget for your transfer costs. A standard sedan that fits up to three people and four bags costs $150, while a van that can accommodate eight people and 10 bags will cost a little over $300. Car seats do not cost extra; if you need one, add it to the "Special Instructions" area of the online reservation system.

Other services, like Blue One Transportation , offer a private vehicle for up to four people for $90. A shared shuttle is also an option for $15 per person. There is no additional charge for children's car seats.

Taxis and ride-shares

If you are heading to the port directly from Tampa airport, Yellow Cab taxis will take you there from the baggage claim pickup areas for a flat rate of $35 . Taxis wait at the terminal for disembarking guests.

Metered rates within the city are $3.50 for the first 1/5 of a mile or part thereof. Additional miles cost $2.50. The minimum fee from the airport is $20.

Ride-shares pick up and drop off at each terminal in designated areas; the estimated ride cost between Tampa International Airport and Port Tampa Bay for Uber or Lyft starts at $20. It's an estimated $120 between Orlando International Airport and the port.

Because ride-shares show you the estimated ride cost before you book and taxis have variable fares depending on the driver's route, we favor ride-shares over taxis.

Public transportation from downtown Tampa/hotel district

The TECO Streetcar is a free service operated by the City of Tampa and runs throughout downtown Tampa and the Ybor City neighborhood. It drops you off within a short walk to all three cruise terminals at Station 7 , located at the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and Channelside Drive. Be mindful of the northbound or southbound direction you want to travel, whether you're coming to the port or leaving it to reach your local destination.

TECO Streetcar hours vary, so check the day's schedule, especially on weekends when cars start running later.

Tampa cruise port parking

On-site port parking.

Official parking at the port is within walking distance of the cruise terminals at the Channelside Parking Garage . You can buy tickets for parking in advance of your cruise on the Port Tampa Bay website. Find your cruise to purchase your parking pass for your sailing, which is 100% refundable prior to a cruise.

Prepaid parking rates are $15.75 per day; the total cost will vary based on the length of your cruise. After prepaying, print your parking voucher, which you'll present to the cashier upon arrival. Alternatively, you can drive up to the port without a reservation; rates remain the same whether you prepay or not.

Parking is only available when the ship is docked, and all major credit cards and cash are accepted. If you want curbside drop-off at the cruise terminal entrance, opt for valet parking for the same daily rate plus an additional $20 fee. Limited oversized vehicle parking at the on-site garage — for vehicles exceeding 8 feet, 2 inches, or that require more than one parking space — is available for $30 per day.

Private lots

Some hotels like Hilton's Hotel Tampa Riverwalk have park-and-stay rates for cruisers. If your hotel doesn't have this option or if you're driving straight to the cruise port, consider a private lot to save some money.

While Port Tampa Bay's on-site Channelside Parking Garage is the closest lot to the terminals, other options aren't much farther from the ships. The 241 Parking garage is well-lit, gated and less than one mile north of the Channelside Parking Garage. At $8.99 per day, it's also more affordable than parking at the port. The lot does fill up, so you'll want to reserve in advance, though you can drive up and park without a reservation if spaces are available.

241 Parking recommends making reservations 30 days in advance during peak cruise season from November through April, and a minimum of 15 days in advance during off-peak cruise season from May to October. The lot provides a free shuttle to and from the port and accepts all major credit cards and cash.

Hotels near Tampa cruise port

Hotel options near the cruise port are plentiful across all brands and price points. Check for current promotions; some hotels offer double points during select times or park-and-stay options so you can leave your car at the hotel while you cruise.

Regardless of where you book a hotel, if you drive to the area, you must factor parking costs into your vacation budget. All parking options in downtown Tampa — including street parking, garages and hotels — have fees.

Hilton hotels

Hampton Inn & Suites Tampa/Ybor City/Downtown (starting at 43,000 points) is an affordable hotel near the cruise port with free hot breakfast. It also offers a complimentary shuttle from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. within a three-mile radius, excluding the airport but including the cruise port.

Hotel Tampa Riverwalk (starting at 42,000 points) is steps from Tampa's Riverwalk on the Hillsborough River and offers park-and-stay rates. The complimentary Tampa TECO Streetcar has a station one block away and stops at the cruise port. If you don't want to eat at the hotel's on-site restaurant, many restaurants are a short walk away.

Marriott hotels

The Tampa Edition (starting at 65,500 points) is a luxury hotel in the trendy Water Street district. With eight on-site restaurants and bars, a stunning outdoor pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a spa and a prime location by Port Tampa Bay, you won't want to leave until your cruise begins. While the hotel doesn't provide a shuttle, the cruise port is less than half a mile away.

If you arrive late to the Tampa airport or have an early morning departure after your postcruise stay, consider the Tampa Airport Marriott (starting at 50,000 points). It has an outdoor pool, fitness center, small convenience shop and a bar and grill.

Hyatt hotels

Hyatt Place Downtown (starting at 9,000 points) is close to Glazer Children's Museum and Tampa's Riverwalk. This family-friendly hotel includes free breakfast , a rooftop pool and on-site self-serve or valet laundry. Sofa beds and refrigerators are in all rooms with a four-guest-per-room maximum. The cruise port is a 10-minute walk away.

If the water is calling you, book the Grand Hyatt (starting at 9,000 points), west of the cruise port. Its waterfront location gives you access to a 9.5-mile bayside trail where you can birdwatch and exercise. Various room types accommodate couples, families and solo travelers in luxury accommodations, a villa-style casita or a family-friendly room. The on-site restaurant and pool are equally picturesque.

Nonpoints hotels

Palihouse Hyde Park Village is a boutique hotel in a historic neighborhood filled with shops, cafes, eateries and bars. The hotel's 36 guest rooms offer king and queen beds. Rates start at $177 per night in the offseason.

If you want to stay in Tampa's historic Ybor City district, reserve a room at Hotel Haya. It features an on-site restaurant, cafe and outdoor pool. Each guest room has a refrigerator, and roll-away beds or cribs are available upon request. Rates start at $169 per night; check the hotel website for current promotions.

Restaurants near Port Tampa Bay

The dining options near the port of Tampa range from Michelin-starred restaurants to casual eateries. If your schedule allows, set aside time to enjoy a meal on land and try local favorites from Cuban cuisine to fresh seafood.

Sparkman Wharf is on the waterfront next to the cruise port. See how this family-friendly destination has turned shipping containers into multiple restaurants and bars with outdoor seating areas. Sparkman Wharf also has retail shops and the Splitsville bowling alley for activities before or after your meal.

Armature Works is a fantastic food hall to visit – especially when it's hot or rainy and alfresco dining is not in the cards. Most of the seating is inside an air-conditioned building where you can order meals and treats from 18 vendors; outdoor dining space is limited.

Water Street Tampa is another dining destination within walking distance from the Tampa cruise port. Enjoy the avenue's wide walkways and lush greenery on your way to top-rated restaurants and bars.

Oxford Exchange is a late-19th-century building housing a mix of retail and dining. Its design and decor draw inspiration from London's historic clubs, libraries and shops. A sense of community can be felt throughout the space as people gather at the tea shop or enjoy the bookstore's book signings and lectures.

Columbia Restaurant is perhaps the city's most famous restaurant, with several locations across Florida; three are located in Tampa. It is well known for its Latin-inspired menu. Try the legendary 1905 salad or a Cuban sandwich. If you're choosing among the three locations, know that the original venue is in Ybor City, less than two miles from the port. Alternatively, the Columbia Restaurant Cafe is accessible from outside the Tampa Bay History Center, less than a mile from the cruise port, and the third location is airside at Tampa International Airport in Concourse E.

Things to do in Tampa before or after your cruise

Tampa is known for its Gulf Coast beaches, culinary scene, multiple attractions and sunshine. Stay local to enjoy what the city offers or visit nearby areas to experience Central Florida's attractions.

Nearby beaches

Beachgoers love the jewel-toned water of Florida's Gulf Coast. Ben T. Davis Beach is the closest and most popular sandy oasis, just over 10 miles west of the cruise port. Metered parking is nearby; arrive early to beat the crowds and find a spot.

Cypress Point Park is a public neighborhood park with access to the water, a small sandy shoreline, a playground, a sand volleyball court, trails and a disc golf course. It's less than 8 miles west of the cruise port.

The Tampa Riverwalk

Beginning just one mile from the port is The Tampa Riverwalk. This 2.6-mile walking path runs along the Hillsborough River. Purchase a one-day or three-day Tampa Riverwalk Attraction Pass for access to the following seven family-friendly attractions:

• Tampa Bay History Center
• Glazer Children's Museum
• Tampa Museum of Art
• Pirate Water Taxi
• Florida Museum of Photographic Arts
• Henry B. Plant Museum

Live sporting events

Cruises depart from Tampa year-round, so if you cruise from September through April, there's likely a live sporting event taking place. Attend a Tampa Bay Lightning game at Amalie Arena during the NHL season from October through April (and further into summer if the team makes the playoffs). Steinbrenner Field is the place to be during spring training for the New York Yankees during February and March. If you want to see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in action during football season, head to Raymond James Stadium from September to January.

Theme parks

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, just 10 miles north of the cruise port, is filled with thrills for all ages, from children's rides to roller coasters for teens and adults. Thousands of people buy special event tickets for the popular Howl-O-Scream event, which takes place from early September to early November.

Alternatively, take advantage of Tampa's proximity to Orlando's theme parks and plan a pre- or postcruise visit to Walt Disney World, Sea World or Universal Parks & Resorts. You'll need an extended stay because the theme parks are more than 70 miles from Port Tampa Bay, and it can take two hours or longer to get there with traffic. You might consider flying into MCO instead of TPA if you're planning a theme park visit before or after your sailing.

St. Pete and Clearwater

Two towns just west of Tampa are incredibly popular among Florida visitors: St. Petersburg – better known as St. Pete – and Clearwater . The two cities are situated on the same peninsula on Tampa Bay and have ample beach access. Some visitors favor St. Pete's downtown vibe with its waterfront shops, restaurants and public park. It's also home to such museums as the Dali Museum and the Chihuly Collection. Other vacationers like Clearwater for its beach, nightlife and the Clearwater Marine Museum.

Thanks to the annual SHINE Festival, which draws renowned street artists from around the world, St. Pete is also known for its dozens of colorful murals. If you like public art, the St. Pete mural tour takes place at 10 a.m. every Sunday. A local guide brings visitors to 30 murals in a four-block radius. The proceeds from the tour fees are reinvested in the city's murals.

Shopping near the Tampa cruise port

The Publix GreenWise Market at Water Street Tampa is a 5-minute walk from the cruise port and is perfect for last-minute essentials, drinks and snacks. Walgreens pharmacy and convenience store is one mile west of the port on W. Platt Street.

If you're interested in shopping for souvenirs near the cruise port to bring home from your time in Tampa, check out the retail shops at Sparkman Wharf, next to the cruise port. For another fabulous shopping area, visit Hyde Park Village. The Unlock Tampa Bay Visitor Center and Gift Shop is ideal for Tampa-branded souvenirs on North Franklin Street, less than one mile northwest of the cruise port.

Port Canaveral budget projects record revenue, profit, boosted by cruise expansion

Port Canaveral officials are expecting the growing cruise sector to produce record revenue and profits for port next year.

Port Canaveral Chief Financial Officer Jeff Long is projecting that the port will have operating revenue of $210.92 million in the 2024-25 budget year, which begins Oct. 1, up 12.7% from the current year.

Profits are expected to rise 17.4% to $70.15 million.

The port also plans to increase its staff by 27 in the next year, mostly to handle increased cruise passenger volume.

How does the $210.92 million in operating revenue break down?

• Cruise ship and cruise passenger parking revenue will account for $175.35 million of the total revenue, or 83.1% of the total. The projected $21.63 million increase in cruise-related revenue accounts for most of the overall projected $23.77 million increase in port overall operating revenue. Cruise ship dockings generate wharfage, dockage, line-handling and other fees.
• Cargo will account for $23.56 million.
• Leases will account for $4.93 million from about 50 tenants.
• Parks and recreation will account for $3.94 million, primarily from Jetty Park camping and recreational parking.
• Other revenue will account for $3.14 million, primarily from fees collected from commercial vehicles, such as shuttles, taxis, and Uber and Lyft vehicles

What is the reason for the increase in cruise revenue?

Cruise lines are putting more ships and larger ships at Port Canaveral.

There will be a total of 1,023 multiday cruise ship sailings out of Port Canaveral in 2024-25. That includes 912 sailings by ships based at Port Canaveral and 111 port-of-call stops by ships based at other ports.

Long said Carnival and Disney each will account for about 400,000 more passengers in 2024-25. The port collects a fee each time a passenger boards or disembarks from a cruise ship.

Two new cruise lines will debut at Port Canaveral with seasonal sailings ― Celebrity and Princess . The Caribbean Princess begins sailing on Nov. 27, and Celebrity Equinox begins sailing on Dec. 3. Each will account for about 100,000 passengers in 2024-25.

How busy will the port be?

Long said there will by 84 days in the next budget year when five or six cruise ships will be in port. That's up from 39 in the current budget year.

During the winter, there will be a record 16 cruise ships based at Port Canaveral, up from the previous record of 13.

What other new cruise ships are coming to Port Canaveral?

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said the next ship joining the Port Canaveral lineup will be the Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas (seasonal, starting Nov. 26); followed by the Carnival Venezia (seasonal, starting Dec. 18); the Disney Treasure (year-round, starting Dec. 21); the Norwegian Aqua (seasonal, starting April 26, 2025); and the Royal Caribbean Star of the Seas (year-round, starting August 2025). The Treasure, Aqua and Star of the Seas all are new ships making their debuts at Port Canaveral.

"We've got a lot of ships happening between now and the end of the year," Murray said. "They're really driving the popularity of the port. It gives new options that our cruise guests have been looking for."

When the Star of the Seas enters service, Port Canaveral with have the world's largest ship (the Star) and the world's third-largest ship (Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas).

How big a deal is cruise parking revenue?

It's big, accounting for 27.8% of total projected cruise revenue, or $48.81 million. That's up $3.98 million from 2023-24. Parking costs $17 a day, plus tax.

The port is constructing two garages that will come online in November ― a 1,969-space garage near Cruise Terminal 6 and a 1,086-space garage near Cruise Terminal 10 ― to handle the increased demand. That will bring the port's total garage parking facilities to about 10,000 spaces.

How is the cargo business doing?

It remains strong, with the top commodities including petroleum and other transportation fuels; lumber and other forest products; slag; limestone; granite; salt; and fertilizer. A total of 6.3 million tons of commodities are expected at Port Canaveral in 2024-25.

What about the port's operating expenses?

They are projected to rise to $136.11 million in the 2024-25 budget year, up 11.0% from $122.58 million in the current budget year.

The major factors for the increase include increases in salaries and benefits; service contract expenses for port facilities; increases in cost for law enforcement and fire protection because of increased cruise passenger volume; computer support costs; maintenance and custodial costs; and cruise-related marketing.

Will Port Canaveral be hiring more people?

Yes. Long said the port plans to increase its staff by 27 in the next budget year, boosting the total staff to 287. Of those new jobs, 15 are in cruise operations, and six are in facilities and maintenance.

About $2.3 million of the increased operating expenses is related to the staff additions.

How will the port be spending its profits?

On capital projects. The port has $173.95 million in capital projects in its plans for 2024-25, including about $88 million in new projects and $86 million in projects carrying forward from the current budget year.

"The monies that we make, 100% of those are just turned around and invested in the port, to make the port better, stronger, to impact the community and the state from an economic perspective," Long said. "So that's our mission, and that's what every dollar will be spent for."
