As the end of the winter season approaches, MSC Virtuosa will sail her final 7-night roundtrip voyage to Hamburg and then conduct a series of mini-cruises – highlighting the fun you can have on the ship in just three nights!
Finally, at the end of the month, she moves into her first Spring/Summer longer voyage of the season by setting sail to the beautiful Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage which includes a stop in the stunning city of Lisbon, Portugal!
Cruises from Southampton in April 2023
As Spring turns towards Summer, MSC Virtuosa will conduct two 7-night Norwegian Fjords voyages visiting wonderful ports such as Olden (home of the Briksdal Glacier) and Flaam, a beautiful little Norwegian port nestled deep in a fjord – with its own microbrewery!
May is wrapped up with two short mini cruises (3 and 5 nights) with calls to Rotterdam, Cork and Portland between the two of them!
June marks a special one-off voyage for MSC Virtuosa , where she will sail on a fortnight cruise to Iceland and Norway – with a lovely overnight stop in Reykjavik for passengers, before crossing the Norwegian Sea and visiting the popular port of Alesund, followed by Maloy and Flaam before heading back to Southampton.
The second half of June sees MSC Virtuosa heading South, across the English Channel and down towards the Bay of Biscay in two back-to-back voyages to Spain & France – calling at ports such as La Rochelle, Bilbao and La Coruna – a great taster of some warmer weather and European ports.
That wraps up half of the cruises from Southampton in 2023 for MSC – there is still plenty to come, though!
As we move into the school holidays and the peak season for MSC Virtuosa , she will conduct three back-to-back 14-night Mediterranean voyages! The first of which sets sail on the 1st July and heads from Southampton to Toulon (France) – the port has a natural deepwater harbour and is also the home of local fishermen (and restaurants) and also wine-making – make sure you sample the local delicacies whilst there! (sounds like the perfect combination!)
Great Spanish ports on each of the three voyages – make sure you spend some time wandering around Cadiz – you can literally walk into the old city from the ship, and the bustling market and cafes are an ideal way to enjoy some time ashore!
August 2023
This month sees the return of MSC Virtuosa back to the Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage, followed by a 2-night mini-cruise to Guernsey (which will certainly be a party event if you are going!) and then a 7-night voyage to Norway – whilst you may have missed the Midnight Sun by this point in the year – it will still be very light with daylight stretching from 4am until around 11pm each day!
September 2023
In September, MSC Virtuosa will first head back to Norway for the last time in 2023 on a 7-night voyage before returning and heading to the Canary Islands – this time on an extended 14-night voyage which also calls in at Casablanca (Morroco) and Cadiz (Spain) en-route to the Canary Islands and Madeira.
On her return, she will conduct a short 3-night mini-cruise to Rotterdam and back and then a further 4-night mini-cruise to Cork and Portland, before setting sail on a rare 15-night extended Mediterranean voyage on the 30th September! She will call at several Spanish ports during her trip including the ever popular Barcelona!
October 2023
As we head into the final month of MSC Virtuosa’s Southampton 2023 season, she will head to France & Spain once more on a 7-night voyage before conducting a slightly longer than usual mini-cruise (5 nights) which will call at Rotterdam, Cork and Portland – before arriving back into Southampton the 27th October 2023.
Meanwhile, the new sister ship, MSC Euribia , will arrive in Southampton for the first time on the 13th of October – she will officially kick off her Winter 2023/24 season with back-to-back 7-night voyages to Hamburg and other ports each week until April 2024! (The countdown to the Christmas Markets is on!)
27th October 2023 is a special day – mark that date! It will be the first time two MSC Meraviglia-plus class ships have been in Southampton on the same day and the first time that MSC Virtuosa will meet her younger sibling, MSC Euribia .
MSC Euribia will leave on a 7-night voyage to Northern Europe. Meanwhile, some lucky passengers will be boarding MSC Virtuosa for an incredible 27-night journey that will take the ship from Southampton, the Mediterranean Sea and along through the Suez Canal before eventually reaching Dubai where she will spend her Winter 2023/24 season (if you’ve not checked out the itineraries there – you really should!)
MSC Euribia will then continue her weekly 7-night Northern Europe itinerary – a perfect mix of sea days and Northern European ports to pass the winter by!
November 2023
MSC Euribia will continue to call in Southampton weekly during November (four times) as she continues her multi-port and multi-embarkation season. As we head towards the end of the month, some ports will start their Christmas Market season too.
Popular ports such as Hamburg will start their Christmas Markets earlier than others – look out for a full Christmas Market Guide from us soon!
These voyages will be an excellent choice for those looking at getting away for a quick Winter break – cruising before Christmas and outside of the school holidays offers excellent value for money – look out for offers from us nearer the time!
December 2023
Whilst MSC Euribia is again continuing her weekly 7-night voyages to Northern Europe (five times in December she will depart Southampton) – they will be anything but routine!
Expect to see the ship transformed into a Christmas Winter Wonderland – complete with outdoor mini-Christmas market, Gluhwein, hot waffles and more!
Enjoy the Christmas festivities at each port you call into and countdown to the 22nd December where MSC Euribia will perform her maiden Christmas Cruise, followed by the 29th December where you can see in 2024 with MSC Euribia on her first NYE Cruise too!
We hope you enjoyed this roundup of what MSC Cruises offers from Southampton in 2023!

Southampton has a unique personality and atmosphere. Its maritime heritage stretches back beyond Tudor times, and it is now well known for ocean yacht racing, watersports and leisure sailing. It’s also one of the UK’s most important trade and cruise ports. The city was also one of four shortlisted for the UK City of Culture 2025.
You’re in luck. Yes, there is. Calshot Beach is a shingle beach at the westerly corner of Southampton Water, just opposite the Weston Shore. Here, you can see ships entering and leaving port, and there a few watersports options in warmer months.
Southampton’s weather is generally milder than most parts of the UK. It has to be said though, that, much like anywhere in the UK, anything can happen, weather-wise. That said, summer is usually warm and comfortable, whilst winters can be cold and windy.
Like all great UK cities, Southampton is awash with shops of all types and sizes, from all the usual high street, big name brands, to smaller, specialist boutique stores. But if you’re looking for shopping (food, fashion, tech and so much more), head for Westquay shopping Centre – just minutes from the terminal – where everything, including a food hall, is under one roof.
Southampton is one of the UK’s great maritime cities. So, why not visit SeaCity Museum for a closer look at the city’s seafaring past if you have a day to spare. Or why not head for the Tudor House and Garden (a Tudor period home, carefully preserved and restored). There’s also the Solent Sky Museum for fans of military aviation. And for theatre lovers, if you have the time, why not take in a show at the famous Mayflower Theatre?

If you are on a World Voyage you may have a few nights before your first stop, and Queen Mary 2’s Transatlantic Crossings have a full 7 nights at sea before calling in to New York. Browse our cruise itineraries to find the cruise that suits you best.
Southampton is home to five cruise terminals: Ocean, QEII, Horizon, Mayflower, and City. You will find out which one your cruise disembarks from in the days leading up to sailing, and it will be shown on your boarding pass, which you can print out from My Cunard after check-in.
All cruise terminals have parking nearby, plus taxi ranks, accessible boarding, toilets and waiting lounges with ample seating. Some terminals also have priority lounges for qualifying guests. Food and drinks are available from cafés, snack bars and vending machines at all terminals.
Yes. You’ll find a café serving refreshments within the departure lounge of each cruise terminal in Southampton (Ocean, QEII, Mayflower, Horizon, and City).
As well as serving hot and cold drinks, including selected alcoholic options, each outlet also offers a selection of sandwiches, cakes, and snack foods. Vending machines are also available.
Booking your cruise early is the best way to secure your desired stateroom and at a reasonable price. Cruises go on sale 2-3 years in advance so you can plan your holidays in with minimal stress, with balances due 90 days before sailing. Take a look at our most recently launched cruises , and start planning!
Promotions and offers are launched throughout the year for varying duration; if you want to be among the first to learn about our offers, you can sign up to our mailing list .
Last-minute cruises are also a good way to save money on your cruise fare, however staterooms will be limited and you may not get the exact one you’d like. These cruises typically see reduced prices within a few weeks of sailing. You can browse and book our current Late Saver cruises via our cruise finder.
There are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in Southampton and the surrounding areas, should you wish to stay over for a night or two before your voyage. Current hotel examples, at the time of writing, include The Moxy, Holiday Inn, and Harbour Hotel.
You could also stay over in London, and spend some time taking in the highlights of the capital. If you'd like to arrange your hotel stay with Cunard, we can add on a Cunard hotel package in partnership with several London hotels. Simply call us to add one to your booking, or add one online when you book your cruise.
Southampton city centre is very close to the cruise terminals; depending on which berth your ship is at, it’s up to a half hour walk. Westquay Shopping Centre has a wide variety of eateries, including Italian, Greek, Japanese and burgers, to name but a few. A little further into town is the high street, also with several pubs and restaurants to choose from. Alternatively you can walk along the front towards the Red Funnel ferry terminal, where several restaurants and local pubs can be found in a historic, waterfront setting.
Southampton is famous for its ports, Medieval architecture, and maritime history. You can catch a glimpse into this past all around the city, from the walls that once separated Southampton from the Solent to buildings such as the Tudor House & Garden, Bargate, and the 13 th Century God’s House Tower. The oldest building still in use, however, is St Michael the Archangel Church, founded in 1070. You can find this on St Michael’s Square in the city’s Old Town.
Home to two universities, and one of the greenest cities on the South Coast, Southampton is also a thriving cultural hub. The SeaCity Museum, John Hansard Gallery, and Southampton City Art Gallery are just some of its top attractions for a culture fix. But if it’s nature you’re after, make a beeline for the city’s 300-acre Common. Just a short stroll from Southampton’s centre, this gargantuan park offers the opportunity to lose yourself among tall trees, lakes, and wild woodland. It’s a perfect way to escape the urban bustle.
The city is also known as a great place to eat, drink, and shop, with many brands, bars, and restaurants, many within or near WestQuay Shopping Centre.
Surprisingly for a city on the South Coast of England, Southampton doesn’t have a beach.
Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, has a shingle beach that you can reach from Southampton using the high-speed Red Jet service, which takes around 25 minutes each way. It’s a pretty place to explore over a couple of hours, with some interesting shops as well as some nice cafés, bars, and restaurants.
Alternatively, you can take a train to Bournemouth (approximately 50 minutes from Southampton Central railway station), where you’ll find several sand beaches, lined by a beachfront promenade that’s great for walking.
Southampton is a great place to indulge in some retail therapy.
Many of the city’s shops can be found under one roof in its three-tier shopping mall, WestQuay as well as numerous restaurants located around the city centre, including pubs, and Italian, Greek, Asian, American, and Mexican eateries. Among the sleek glass and steel walkways here you’ll find a host of high-street brands, including the popular M&S and John Lewis, both of which also have an on-site café.
You’ll find a further selection of stores in Southampton’s pedestrianised shopping precinct, the Marlands shopping mall, and WestQuay retail park. There’s also an IKEA in the city centre, and gift shops within the city’s art galleries and museums.
With a thriving shopping scene, a blend of galleries and museums, and no shortage of green spaces, Southampton is a great city to explore.
The city’s two art galleries, the John Hansard Gallery and City Art Gallery, are both free to enter and within a stone’s throw of one another in the Cultural Quarter. You also have the SeaCity Museum nearby, where you can discover Southampton’s Titanic story through a series of interactive exhibits.
In the Old City of Southampton, you’ll find the city’s famous Medieval walls and its most historic buildings. The Tudor House & Garden, the Medieval Merchant’s House, and St Michael’s Archangel Church, which dates back to 1070, are all located in this part of town.
Southampton is also home to a charming collection of historic pubs including the Duke of Wellington, the Red Lion, and the Dancing Man, which offers unique own-brand beers in a beautiful stone building that was at one time a working wool mill.
The Isle of Wight is also accessible in under half an hour by taking the Red Jet from Southampton to Cowes.

Ships in the Gulf of Mexico escaped Hurricane Debby in good time. It's not always so easy
Long before a hurricane makes landfall, it has already caused havoc at sea, forcing ships to reroute and burn more fuel. Better data could help keep emissions down as hurricanes grow in strength.
Tropical Storm Debby intensified into a category one hurricane on Sunday 4 August, sparking warnings of high winds and potentially "catastrophic" flooding in the coming hours as it makes landfall in Florida's Big Bend. The hurricane is expected to cause potentially historic rainfall in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center .
But before hurricanes even make landfall, they can cause significant chaos at sea. Debby's intensification into a hurricane has already prompted port closures and schedule adjustments for ships. The effects have been watched closely by shipping industry experts because the track the storm initially took is traditionally very disruptive to shipping, says Michael O'Brien, chief operating officer at StormGeo, a firm that helps businesses respond to weather events.
When hurricanes race across the Atlantic Ocean, they scatter ships left and right as the vessels reroute to avoid the worst of the storms. The ports those ships are heading to may shut down. Taking alternate routes, these ships burn more fuel. The greenhouse gases streaming from their funnels swell in volume.
Thankfully, in Debby's case, the storm actually missed some of the key shipping routes and oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico. A much more serious effect was felt in June, though, with the arrival of Hurricane Beryl. "It had a massive impact," recalls O'Brien. Among the ships forced off course was the Icon of the Seas – the world's largest cruise ship. O'Brien's company sent a flurry of instructions to captains on how to navigate around Beryl as efficiently as possible. Keeping fuel consumption low not only saves on emissions, it costs shipping firms less, too.
O'Brien says that, without route optimisation, the risk is a 10-15% increase in emissions for ships taking detours around hurricanes. Another company that works with the shipping industry, ZeroNorth, goes further. It estimates potential emissions increases of more than 50%, or around 20% on average, per ship. Both firms provide information to vessels with the intention of curtailing excess emissions.
It matters because this year's Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be the most active on record , with perhaps as many as eight to 13 hurricanes . Typhoons in the Pacific Ocean can have a similar effect on ships.
"It's a downward spiral," says Søren Meyer, chief executive officer at ZeroNorth, pointing out that storms are getting worse thanks to human-caused climate change , which itself is partly driven by emissions from ships. These bigger storms are, ironically, forcing shipping industry emissions higher still, and further from their climate targets .
It is hard to know exactly how this year's Atlantic hurricane season, and Pacific typhoon season, will play out. But ZeroNorth estimates that, without interventions, stormy weather could bump up emissions from the shipping industry globally by more than 800,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) in 2024. That's roughly the equivalent of adding 175,000 fossil fuel-powered cars to the world's roads .
"That level of impact would make sense to me," says Stephen Turnock, professor of maritime fluid dynamics at the University of Southampton in the UK. He points out that the shipping industry as a whole produces around one billion tonnes of CO2e annually .
Turnock says that we will likely see a rising "energy cost" associated with more frequent extreme weather events such as hurricanes – ships will burn more fuel and emit more pollutants. That said, the increase in emissions from ships currently avoiding the Red Sea because of Houthi attacks on vessels there is likely to be much more significant. These vessels are taking gigantic detours of about 3,500 nautical miles (4,000 miles/6,500km) to sail around the horn of Africa instead of through the Suez Canal. Such behaviour causes emissions to rise by as much as 38% per voyage, according to industry analysis. Plus, while the response to hurricanes is usually short-lived, these very large detours have now been going on without interruption for many months.
Still, throwing what may turn out to be the most active Atlantic hurricane season on record into the mix certainly doesn't help.
StormGeo's O'Brien says that he and his colleagues provide email and phone assistance to captains who find themselves at risk of meeting a hurricane at sea. This advice can be tailored to each vessel, he emphasises, since it might prove more fuel efficient to stop and wait for the hurricane to pass rather than proceeding along an alternate route, depending on the schedule of the ship in question and the trajectory of the storm.
He shares an example of one vessel that was heading towards the Panama Canal as Hurricane Beryl approached. On StormGeo's advice, the ship waited for Beryl to pass to the south and west. His calculations suggested this saved an estimated 10 tonnes of fuel versus sailing quickly to get ahead of the storm.
As well as being costly in terms of fuel and emissions, racing in front of an extremely powerful storm can be risky. What if the ship's engine breaks down on the way?
"All of a sudden, you're left in the path of the hurricane," says O'Brien.
StormGeo recommends maintaining a minimum of 50 nautical miles between the hurricane and the ship in question at all times. O'Brien notes that his firm's guidance on possible detours can vary depending on the type of vessel. A slow bulk carrier with a lot of cargo on deck will be especially vulnerable to rolling seas so it must avoid rough conditions. Whereas a container ship that can sail more quickly might have greater "wiggle room" in terms of its tactics, says O'Brien.
Overall, route optimisation could mean a hurricane-related emissions increase of just 5% or so, instead of 10% or more, he estimates. It can help to keep the crew safe, too.
Meyer says that ZeroNorth helped around 50 vessels change their routes in response to Hurricane Beryl. If even better forecasts become available, which could accurately predict storm activity several days ahead, that would help ships sail more efficiently across oceans, he adds. Outside of hurricanes and typhoons, ZeroNorth tries to help ships avoid strong currents and windy weather in general – since this makes vessels' engines work harder and, consequently, burn more fuel.
Hurricanes affect different kinds of ship in different ways, says Emily Stausbøll at Xeneta, an ocean and air freight analytics service. Container ships might find it easier to reroute and offload their cargo – conveniently packed in containers that can be moved by road or rail – at alternative ports. Oil tankers, conversely, are often required at a specific port so captains might feel a greater incentive to sail as fast as possible to their destination once it becomes safe to do so.
"Oil is kind of critical, you can't sit and wait for three days," she says.
More like this:
• Why ships sail fast then wait
• Can cruising ever be green?
• The ships rerouting around the Red Sea crisis
She notes another effect of extreme weather on transport emissions, away from the sea itself. In severe drought, rivers and inland waterways can dry up, meaning that barges cannot ferry cargo along them. Alternatives including air and road freight can be significantly worse in terms of emissions .
Meyer argues that the shipping industry should make more use of route optimisation to reduce emissions where possible. According to a 2000 study from the International Maritime Organization, route optimisation could shave 2-4% from shipping industry emissions, on average. Meyer says that much bigger savings than this are possible in response to hurricanes.
The University of Southampton's Turnock agrees that it is worth doing. "It's one of an armoury of tools that are out there for using less energy on ships in the future."
Hurricane Debby might not impact shipping as significantly as Beryl did but, on land in south-eastern states, it could be a different story.
"A strong storm surge in Florida and enormous amounts of rain will impact hundreds of thousands if not millions of people," says O'Brien.
