"There’s been change on so many levels, all the ups and downs and dramas and tragedies and joys that the slow movement through life brings. This record has been a reckoning with stuff that’s been building up like static for years.

"But I say this with joy and a smile on my face. I know what I’ve done is as good as anything I could possibly do."

David Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire in England on 13th June 1968. He is an English indie rock singer-songwriter.

David Gray attended the Carmarthenshire College of Art and the Liverpool School of Art.

David Gray's music career started in 1993, releasing debut album, "A Century Ends", he quickly went on the release second studio album, "Flesh", which led the singer songwriter to be recognised by popular folk and indie labels. David continued to record and work hard, released a third album in 1996, named, "Sell, sell, sell". Although he changed his style slightly, using his now trademark style of folk, alternative rock and electronics, the album was still unsuccessful.

Finally, the release of his fourth album, "White Ladder" in 2000 bought him success. The breakthrough was thanks to his best-known songs: "This Year's Love" and "Babylon". "Babylon" was number 1 in the charts for six weeks and sold over 100,000 copies alone in Ireland.

David's hard work and persistence paid off and the album was number 1 in the UK Albums Chart for two and a half years.

He has been nominated for four Brit Awards – twice for Best British Male. David Gray has toured since his music career began in 1993 and has since performed with acts, Kirsty MacColl, Dave Matthews Band and Radiohead.

Live reviews

As a 56 year old male with over 40 years of going to gigs (that’s what we called them when younger, no idea if it’s the same in the 21st Century), I have to admit to not knowing what to expect from my first David Gray concert.

Which is just as well.

My lack of expectations did not prepare me for the energy, talent, sound and overall wonderful experience I had at The Cliffs Pavillion last night (20/03/2019).

I’ve followed Mr G’s music since the mid 1990’s and have been haunted by the breathtaking music and lyrics. Receiving my signed copy of his new album (‘Goldbin a Brass Age’) just three days before I saw him, I feasted on it like a starving man.

It paid off as I was blown away by the first set of songs from this new album. I’d treated myself to a front row seat and I was captivated by the mans energy and obvious enjoyment at playing these new songs. He spoke about it being akin to learning to breathe again- and I can understand why.

Don’t get me wrong; his classic tracks are just that. Classic and enduring. The second set were many of the ‘old favourites’ and they were great. They caught the audience and carried them with him and the band.

But this new stuff? My Oh My (sorry), it was about an hour of sheer bliss. Well sung, well played and the sound was brilliant from where I was.

I’m used to Genesis, Yes, Camel, Steve Hackett and the like with Newton Faulkner, Ezio, Hue and Cry and Dan Wilde thrown in for balance. A recent Death Cab for Cutie gig was simply awesome; but this musician engaged me in his new music, enthralled me with his skill and voice and made me smile with his connection to his (very happy) audience.

If you can, go and see him. Tell him Alan said Hello and thanks...

3rd time I've seen David Gray and against expectations, the best. It was a bold move to front load the set list with new songs with the new album not yet released but it made for a powerful listening experience as the artist performed his new compositions to an audience hearing them for the first time - and they are strong tracks. Then when the older material was woven into the set it was with plenty of creativity and a willingness to take his classic tracks to new places. My Oh My, Please Forgive Me and The Other Side were delivered with power and an inventive energy. The encore opened with an acoustic Babylon with everyone singing along in accompaniment and then a tender This Year's Love on piano, cello and bass - beautiful. The closer, Nemesis, wouldn't have been my choice, but by this stage everyone was won over, enthralled at such great songs performed so creatively. Great gig, great performer. I'll be back for more.

Probably one of the most underrated musicians in the UK right now. David had an acoustic set and thank god he did because it meant we were able to hear that melodic voice of his. If he had been accompanied by a full band I doubt we would have appreciated this guy's talent. A lot of ballads and not a lot of uptempo songs but nevertheless a great privilege to have seen David Gray live. Fully enjoyed the night. I would however suggest that Usher Hall do something about those seats that keep on banging when people get to go to the toilet - very distracting

Great performance. The opener - John Smith - had a strong 30-minute set. David Gray came on soon after, and played for around 2 1/2 hours, and covered all his hit songs from the last 20 years. What I found most surprising was how much energy he had. He brought to life songs that I wouldn't consider 'rocking'. He dances & jest urea in his own awkward, British way (a la Chris Martin), but was clearly into what he was doing. Add his witty, British repartee with the crowd, & you have the makings of a great show.

Enjoyed seeing David for the first time. The music from his new album is quality stuff and I’m going to buy it.

There was one small point though that my wife and I noted and from what others were shouting out, was that we would really appreciate it if David would talk to his audience more. We person shouted out “Say hello David!” at the start of the concert and in between songs there were pauses that needed filling with what he’s been doing, his life, personal stuff, small talk etc.

There is a distinct difference between attending a show and attending a performance. David Gray is a true performer. He brought electric to the stage with a full band and heavy light show. His passion exudes from him as he brings the crowd on the journey. I didn't know many songs from him before the show (I bought the tickets for my girlfriend) but after the show he has earned another true fan who will return to see him on the next tour!

What can I say... we thought we had seen the best of DG last time he was at the Sage, but we were absolutely blown away by his performance last night... the way he immerses himself in his music is just mesmerising and at times the whole venue was absolutely silent, waiting for the next bar...what a voice, what a talent... just brilliant!

Blighty2911’s profile image

The quality and clarity of David's voice made this an outstanding experience. Interspread with personal background information about many of the songs performed made this a unique event. Even with a slight technical glitch halfway through the first set David put on a show which is one of my favourites to date. Great stuff.

ron-foord’s profile image

Fantastic music. David did a first half featuring his new music. Really interesting arrangements.

Lots of older work. Shine was outstanding.

Everyone sang along with Babylon and Sail Away.

He's great to watch. His voice was stronger than ever. And he had a sense of humor about the Raptors.

My husband and I found this concert to be dissappointing, but we can't quite figure out why. David Gray and Amos Lee are two of our favorite artists, but this show just seemed to have no energy. Amos Lee appeared to be trying too hard to woo the ladies, and David Gray's set list was oddly arranged.

The Welsh artist has announced his only Irish gig on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Dublin’s 3Arena . Talia Rae will support the singer on the night.

As part of his Past & Present Tour, the Babylon hitmaker will perform songs from across his career as well as tracks from his forthcoming album Dear Life, including the new single Plus & Minus.

Dear Life will mark Gray’s thirteenth studio album. He has previously described the record as the product of “a starburst of songwriting... it just seemed like the gods of songwriting were being kind. The doubting voices didn’t turn up”.

“It’s an album of emotional turmoil and resolution, mortality and faith, reality and illusion, love and heartbreak, magic and science, loss and acceptance.

“A lot has happened to me. There’s been change on so many levels, all the ups and downs, dramas, tragedies, and joys that the slow movement through life brings.

“This record has been a reckoning with stuff that’s been building up like static for years. But I say this with joy and a smile on my face. I know what I’ve done is as good as anything I could possibly do.”

Two months after Dear Life is released on January 17 next year, Gray will embark on a 17-date UK and Ireland tour, kicking off at Portsmouth Guildhall on March 13, and culminating in a headline show at Dublin’s 3Arena on April 5.

Tickets for the highly anticipated Dublin gig will go on sale at 10am on Friday, September 20, via Ticketmaster .

Pre-sale tickets will be available from 10am on Tuesday, September 17, with the general sale starting at 10am on Friday, September 20.

DAVID GRAY announces rescheduled dates for UK and Ireland tour to celebrate The 20th Anniversary of White Ladder

Postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic, Multi-platinum, multi-Brit and Grammy-nominated, British singer-songwriter David Gray’s 14-date tour across the UK and Ireland to celebrate White Ladder: The 20th Anniversary is to go ahead in May and June 2022 to celebrate the 7 million-selling, trailblazing album’s 20-year anniversary.

The people’s choice blockbuster that launched a thousand troubadours and one of the greatest and most heart-warming word-of-mouth successes in music, White Ladder will be performed by Gray with all the original band members and with all the original equipment to recreate the record in its entirety, plus a set of the greatest hits.

White Ladder: The 20 th  Anniversary Tour  summer 2022 tour dates will commence at  SSE Arena in Belfast  on  17 May  and will include a three-night run at  Dublin’s 3Arena 19-21 May  as well as an outdoor summer performance at  Musgrave Park in Cork on 18 June .

In addition to the tour, the UK Single Mix of Gray’s breakthrough hit single ‘Babylon’ is available on streaming services for the first time on 21st January. The mix, a No.1 UK radio airplay hit and much loved by fans, had been thought to have been lost several years ago in the archives. Listen BELOW:

A special remastered 20th anniversary edition of White Ladder the album is also available on CD and, for the first time ever, on vinyl. There is also a deluxe 2xCD edition and 4xLP version that includes White Ladder rarities and B-sides, plus an extensive booklet with stories written by Gray about the whole White Ladder experience – from the people involved to the stories behind the songs and memorable shows.

Talking about the announcement, Gray says:

“It’s the 20th anniversary of White Ladder, a unique record with its own remarkable history. Jammed full with big, open-hearted songs and flooded with a raw emotional energy. It’s an album that came from nowhere to steal the hearts of millions all over the world, completely transforming my life in the process. Twenty years on and it feels like White Ladder is just as alive for people now as it was back then – so to celebrate this milestone, I will be re-releasing a fully remastered version of the album and assembling all the original band members with all the original equipment, in order to take White Ladder out on the road and recreate the record in its entirety”.

White Ladder was born of difficult circumstances. Gray had been struggling on the margins for a decade, a lonely figure with an acoustic guitar swimming against the tide of Britpop, grunge, hip hop and electro. With three albums to his name, he found himself advertised at a gig third on the bill to beer and a barbecue. “Futility was so thick on the ground it was utterly soul-destroying.” He came close to quitting. But instead, he asked himself some difficult questions: “Can you make a better record? Can you write a better song? The decision was to open up and give it everything I’ve got.”

Written and recorded on minimal budget by Gray in the bedroom of a tiny terraced house in Stoke Newington, David experimented with drum machines and electronic elements, creating a blend of folktronica that has since become a familiar part of the musical landscape, aided by drummer Craig McClune and engineer Iestyn Polson. Self-released at first on his own kitchen sink label, White Ladder slowly (very, very slowly) found an audience. It took a year to creep into the lower reaches of the British charts, then worked its way all the way up to number one. White Ladder eventually spent 3 years (from May 2000 to March 2003) in the UK top 100, spawning classic hit singles ‘Babylon’, ‘Please Forgive Me’ and ‘Sail Away’. It remains in the top 30 best-selling British albums of all time and the best-selling album ever in Ireland (a nation who knows a good song when they hear it).

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, it’s interesting to consider the extraordinary aftermath of White Ladder. Its success spawned a new wave of singer-songwriters in an acoustic boom that resonates to this day, a soul-baring lineage that can be directly traced from David Gray to the all-conquering Ed Sheeran. Indeed, Ed is a fan, known to cover ‘This Year’s Love’ live. Fellow world-beating British superstar Adele is also an admirer, citing ‘This Year’s Love’ as one of her all-time favourite break-up songs.

White Ladder remains an album of great depth and startling beauty, a superlative collection of emotional songs capturing a very special moment in time, as raw and immediate as when it was recorded. It’s one of 11 complex, ambitious and heartfelt albums Gray has recorded in a career that spans 25 years. Some, like White Ladder, have been big commercial successes (2002’s A New Day At Midnight and 2005’s Life In Slow Motion were UK chart-toppers), others have been more intimate and experimental. All feature music that is both intimate and broad, intensely personal yet capable of speaking to the masses.

Says Gray, “What happened with White Ladder involved more than music. It was a sort of heart and soul moment of total surrender for everybody involved, for me and the audience. That was it. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

C hart-topping hitmaker Teddy Swims announces the continuation of his I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy tour with an extensive run of arena shows throughout Europe and the United Kingdom in early 2025. Kicking off on February 11 in Düsseldorf, Germany, the tour includes stops in Oslo, Berlin, Paris, London and more before wrapping up in Dublin on Wednesday, 12 March 2025.

On Friday, Swims released his new single “Bad Dreams” — listen HERE via Warner Records and watch the video HERE . The new track builds on the momentum of his global smash hit "Lose Control,” which he performed last week on the MTV VMA Extended Play stage, along with his recent charting single “ The Door ” and a rendition of Rihanna’s “Stay.” He was nominated for four awards at the show, including Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Best Alternative, and PUSH Performance of the Year.

2024 has been a whirlwind for Swims, who celebrated the success of his 2x Platinum chart-conquering hit “Lose Control” from his debut album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1). In addition to claiming the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song has amassed over 2.2 billion global streams, reached #1 on five radio formats (Top 40, Hot AC, AC, R&B, and Rhythm), and was recently inducted into Spotify’s “Billions Club.”

Putting in real work for years, a quiet, yet steady grind brought Swims to the forefront of popular culture as a tried-and-true star without comparison. Teddy started to gain notoriety after posting covers online in 2019 — such as Michael Jackson’s “ Rock With You ” and Shania Twain’s “ You’re Still The One ” — gaining hundreds of millions of views, leading to his signing to Warner Records in 2020. He tirelessly honed his voice and songwriting across EPs such as Unlearning [2021], Tough Love [2022], and Sleep Is Exhausting [2022]. He showcased his sky-high range by collaborating with artists such as Maren Morris , Meghan Trainor , X Ambassadors , Thomas Rhett, ILLENIUM , Tiësto , Armin Van Buuren , and Matoma . He made a statement with I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) in 2023, and wrapped up a prolific run by releasing a Live Version of the album alongside his band Freak Freely at the top of 2024.
