How to plan a day trip from sarajevo.

When planning your Sarajevo day trip you have three options: Hire a car and drive yourself, use buses or taxis, or join an organised group tour from Sarajevo.

With your own wheels, you can get out and see a lot of the country in a short period of time. If you’re thinking about hiring a car in Bosnia , I highly recommend using Discover Cars to compare prices on different rentals.

Some of these day trip destinations can be visited by bus. There are good transport connections between Sarajevo and Jajce, Konjic, Travnik and even Mostar. However, it’s usually more economical (and a better use of time) to join an organised day tour, especially if you want to travel further afield.

My tour operator of choice is Sarajevo Funky Tours . I was lucky enough to join two tours with them when I visited Bosnia and Herzegovina – both were fantastic.

Another option is to book online. Get Your Guide is my preferred booking site for tours in Europe – they offer a huge range of day and multi-day tours from different operators, great flexibility (including the option to cancel if plans change), and secure online payment.

Quick reference: Best guided day tours from Sarajevo

– Mostar and southern Herzegovina tour – One-way tour to Mostar via Pocitelj, Konjic and Blagaj – Private tour from Sarajevo to Visegrad and the ‘Bridge on the River Drina’ – Hiking trip to Lukomir Village – Srebrenica memorial tour – Day tour to Jajce and Travnik

12 best Sarajevo day trips

A stone bridge over a blue river in Mostar.

If you don’t have enough time to visit Mostar for a few days , you should at least make sure to see it as a day trip from Sarajevo. This beautiful UNESCO World Heritage city is a testament to Bosnia’s work to overcome the violence of the nineties, with the Stari Most (old bridge) as it’s shining example.

The bridge is the highlight, since it’s one of the most picturesque spots in Europe. Watch the divers take off from the wall and dive elegantly into the river below. There are several cafes you can enjoy the view from, but I love just the actual experience of walking back and forth across the bridge.

If you’re looking for the best place from which to take your iconic Mostar Bridge photo, I prefer the look from the next bridge over. Take your time and see what you can come up with!

To get from Sarajevo to Mostar, you can travel by car in about 2 hours. When I was in Bosnia, I loved hiring drivers so I could quickly get from city to city. This also meant I could stop and photograph the Yugoslav spomeniks on the site of the road.

However, for those who want to stick to public transportation, there are frequent buses back and forth throughout the day. The bus takes a little under 3 hours each way

If you do get swept up in the city’s charm and end up staying the night, use this list of Mostar hotel recommendations to help you plan. You can always grab an early bus back to Sarajevo in the morning

A stone bridge over a river with a mosque in the background.

Konjic is a small town on the road to Mostar and is a perfect day trip from Sarajevo. It is less than 2 hours away from Sarajevo with good public transport connections . Still, few travellers come here, and you’re likely to be the only tourist walking around town

Most people that do decide to visit Konjic do so to see Tito’s bunker. For years this was a well-kept secret. Hidden away from the public next to the deep blue Neretva river you see an ordinary looking Bosnian house, but inside is the entrance to a bunker that was supposed to protect Tito in the case of a nuclear attack. Nowadays it’s a museum that also has an art exhibition in several rooms

The bunker is not the only reason to come to Konjic, though. The old town is small but charming, with a beautiful old bridge crossing the Neretva. If you have your own car the surrounding mountains are also worth exploring with little villages that rarely see tourists.

For an off-the-beaten-path experience near the capital, Konjic makes for one of the best Sarajevo day trips.

A white building nestled in a rocky gorge in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Blagaj, about 2 hours and 20 minutes from Sarajevo by car, is located near Mostar, so ideally you can visit both places in one day. The easiest option is to join a guided tour, which you can book from various tour operators in Sarajevo.

If you wish to go by yourself, I suggest renting a car because there is no direct bus to Blagaj from Sarajevo. Renting a car is easy, and roads are quite good. There isn’t too much traffic in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and if you have a rental car, you can easily visit some other nearby places at the same time.

The Blagaj Tekke is a monastery that was built around 1520 in a mix of Mediterranean and Ottoman styles. It’s one of the main highlights of visiting Blagaj, and it’s beautifully situated at the spring of Buna River.

Blagaj itself is a historical village that can be traced back to Roman times. It also has a grim past that goes back to 1941, when 400 civilians were killed.

4. Pocitelj

A mosque.

Pocitelj is a Medieval village with Ottoman influence. Today, it’s mostly a tourist destination because of its gorgeous location, perched up in the hills with beautiful views all around.

But that was not always the case. Once upon a time, Pocitelj was a thriving village. Its political and social importance has fluctuated over the centuries since its original establishment in the 15th century. Disaster hit when Pocitelj was completely destroyed in the 20th century after the Croatian army targeted it

Pocitelj is now thriving as a tourist destination. And why wouldn’t it be? Its beautiful cobblestone streets lead to historic buildings and homes, some with Muslim and others with Christian influence

Read my guide to visiting Pocitelj from Mostar.

It takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes to get to Pocitelj from Sarajevo by car. Located just past Mostar on the way to the Croatian border, it makes a good stop off when travelling to Dubrovnik. Pocitelj is located right on the freeway and is really easy to get to. Anyone passing can see it up in the hills.

If you’re doing a day trip from Sarajevo, you can combine it with a couple of other destinations recommended in this article. Pocitelj has a few restaurants and some farm stalls for food. I would recommend stopping there, even if it’s just for a break and snack.

The people are very laidback and friendly. Take the time to chat with them. You’ll love it

A waterfall.

Jajce is a small city with big historical significance. The waterfall at its centre—undoubtedly its defining feature, is a natural cascade augmented by the first hydroelectric power station on the Balkan Peninsular, which was established in Jajce in 1899.

The city is crowned with a 13th-century fortress, the last seat of the Kingdom of Bosnia before it fell to the Ottomans. Nearby, St. Mary’s church, which predates the fortress, was where Bosnia’s last king, Stjepan Tomasevic, was crowned in 1461.

Jajce’s history of costume and local traditions is told through its small ethnography museum. Near the bus stop, an anti-fascist museum remembers the meeting place of the second Yugoslavia Assembly, when the Yugoslav state was officially signed into existance right here in Jajce.

Jajce is an ideal base for exploring northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina’s nature and scenery. Water sports are available at Pliva Lakes , about 10 minutes from the centre of Jajce, and further out, there’s trekking in Perucica, one of Europe’s last remaining primordial forests.

You’ll need longer than a day for this, but the city itself and the waterfall can be seen in just a few hours. Jajce can be reached in 2.5–3 hours by bus from Sarajevo.

A fortress and city below.

Travnik, located 90 km from the capital, is one of the best places to visit in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a perfect Sarajevo day trip. The journey takes 2 hours by bus and connections are relatively frequent, making it easy to plan a short getaway.

Travnik has a long and fascinating history. In the 17th-19th century, the city was the capital of the governors of Bosnia. Today, Travnik is a bit of a sleepy town with some interesting sights to see: An impressive fortress with great views over the area, two clock towers, a colourful mosque, and the scenic Plava Voda area.

It is also said that Travnik is home to the best cevapi (the minced meat dish Bosnia and Herzegovina is famous for ) in the county and the smell of grill hovers over the town. This is a perfect place to see a less touristy side of the Balkans and I’m sure you will enjoy the place if you decide to visit.

7. Banja Luka

A church with a gold dome.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second-largest city and capital of autonomous Republica Srpska, Banja Luka is well worth a spot on your Balkans itinerary. It’s preferable to spend at least a few nights in Banja Luka, but if you only have a day, you can reach the city from Sarajevo in roughly 3.5 hours when travelling by car.

This involves one of the longest transit times of all Sarajevo day trips on this list—but it’s worth the effort. Banja Luka has some incredible religious buildings, including the Ferhat Pasha Mosque, with its intricately painted fountain, and the Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Explore the bastions and old walls of the medieval Kastel Fortress, browse Banja Luka’s undercover green market, and walk to the edges of the city to find interesting street art.

Restaurant Kazamat, located inside the fortress complex, serves regional cuisine including Banja Luka cevapi , a local rendition of the national favourite. There’s enough museums and galleries to keep you occupied for a while, or get outdoors and walk Banja Luka’s vibrant pedestrian mall and a spree of waterfront cafes.

8. Srebrenica

A green memorial site in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is important to acknowledge historical events when visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina. The deplorable massacre in Srebrenica should be remembered and honoured.

The city is a quiet one, located along a mountainside, and is now infamous for what occurred in July 1995. The massacre in Srebrenica is remembered across Bosnia and Herzegovina as a dark day in the country’s history.

More than 8,000 men and boys were gathered and killed over a period of two days. They had been separated by Serb soldiers from a crowd of refugees in Potocari who were being loaded onto buses.

Tours are available from Sarajevo to Srebrenica (the city is in eastern Bosnia and just a few miles from the Serbian border). Located in an isolated area, it takes about 2.5 hours one-way. The Srebrenica Genocide Memorial consists of nearly 7,000 white gravestones standing upright across grassy hills, and the granite memorial lists over 8,300 victims’ names.

The Srebrenica Massacre is regarded the largest and most tragic genocide on the European continent after World War II. Srebrenica’s significance is imperative in understanding the country’s deep history, making it worth a day visit from Sarajevo

9. Visegrad

A stone bridge.

Visegrad and its famous ‘Bridge on the Drina’ are located just 100 km from Sarajevo, close to the Serbian border. Another town with a tragic history, Visegrad was the site of two wartime massacres (in WWII and again in the 1990s).

The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, perhaps BiH’s most recognisable stone bridge after the one in Mostar, is Visegrad’s main attraction. Small boats depart from under the abutments, taking tourists for a short spin on the water and a chance to see the bridge’s 11 masonic arches from a different perspective.

Just beyond the bridge you’ll find Adricgrad, a ‘model town’ built as a film set that now serves as a living monument to author Ivo Andric who memorialised Visegrad in his 1945 novel.

The Borak stećci necropolis, another of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s UNESO sites, lies roughly halfway between Visegrad and Sarajevo. It’s well worth a quick stop off if you’re using private transportation to reach Visegrad.

10. Tara National Park (Serbia)

Two people walk through a forest.

If you have your own transportation, it’s possible to visit Tara National Park in western Serbia as a day trip from Sarajevo. To do this, you’ll need to pass through the Vardiste-Kotroman border crossing.

The most accessible part of the park from BiH is Mokra Gora and Mount Zlatibor, which lie roughly 140 km east of Sarajevo and can be reached in a little over 2 hours by car. On the way, stop off at Dobrun Monastery, located just before the border on the Bosnian side.

The densely wooded forests around Mokra Gora village boast some day beautiful hikes, including the short walk to the Banjska Stena viewpoint. From here, you can get a good view of Perucac Lake and the land border between Serbia and BiH.

While you’re in Mokra Gora, you can ride the historic Sargan Eight single-gauge railway and visit Drvengrad, a stranger-than-life historical village constructed by film director Emir Kusturica that hosts an annual film festival.

Guided option: Visit Tara National Park, Visegrad and more of eastern BiH/western Serbia with Sarajevo Funky Tours’ ‘Off the Beaten Path’ itinerary .

11. Lukomir

A mountain village.

Lukomir , located high above Bjelasnica along a Dinaric alpine ridge, is a village of semi-nomadic Bosniak Muslim herders. Because of its remote location, the village wasn’t strategically important to the Serbs during the 1990s war, and it emerged unscathed.

Residents inhabit the village during the warmer months. When winter looms, they pack up and return to the lowlands. Most of the homes in the village have electricity, but many villagers still get their water at the communal spring across from the only restaurant, which also has a little store filled with provisions.

The draw here in Lukomir is a glimpse into traditional Bosniak culture. Locals will invite you in for a coffee or attempt to sell you traditional handmade knitwear. The views are magnificent, particularly from the ancient graveyard above town, where medieval stecci tombstones have stood watch for perhaps a thousand years.

To get to Lukomir, you’ll most likely want to go in a small group eco-tour from Sarajevo. Access to the village is remote via unmarked single-track roads which take you high above the tree line, best done with a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Tours will typically last the entire day and include a lunch of traditional burek (a meat and cheese phyllo dough concoction) and fresh yogurt drink

A rocky beach.

Neum is a perfect place for a day trip from Sarajevo if you need some fresh sea breeze and want to enjoy some delicious seafood. This lovely little coastal town is the only town along Bosnia and Herzegovina ‘s tiny 20 km stretch of coastline, making it the country’s only access point to the Adriatic Sea.

Neum is a 3.5-hour drive from the city of Sarajevo, but an incredible place to visit for a day or two if you want some great coastal views and to do some sunbathing/swimming in the ocean in the hot summer months.

In the evening time, slow it down by catching the incredibly beautiful sunset while walking the streets and pick from one of the many seafood restaurants along the waterfront. The fairy lights and ambiance of this place at night is really beautiful and puts you into the mood to relax and enjoy a lovely dinner with your loved ones or friends.

Driving and parking can be a bit of an issue in Neum in summer as it’s mostly one-way streets, and it gets crowded with many vehicles and people. It’s advisable to park a bit further away from the main stretch. Lastly, Neum is also a popular place to spend a night before heading to Croatia.

Backpacking The Balkans - Mostar

Mostar is one of the most famous cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, largely thanks to the Red Bull cliff diving series that takes place in the city every year. Divers from around the world gather in this charming city and plunge themselves off a platform erected on the famous bridge Stari Most bridge into the cold Neretva River below.

It’s definitely an exhilarating activity, but it’s something locals have been doing for ages before the Red Bull series caught onto it. That’s why you can usually spot people in swimming trunks on the old stone bridge – they’re waiting to collect a certain amount of money before they jump off the bridge for your entertainment.

Though Stari Most might be the most iconic city sight, it’s certainly not the only one worth your time. We recommend a visit to the Biscevic House for an insight into how people lived in the olden days and a visit to the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, which offers captivating River Neretva views.

If you only have time for one or two places to visit near Sarajevo, make sure that Mostar is one of them . It’s one of the most incredible destinations in the Balkans!

It takes about two hours to get to Mostar from Sarajevo if you drive and much longer if you take the local train, which I don’t recommend. I found the trains filthy and slow, and, quite frankly, I did not feel very secure.

How far is Mostar from Sarajevo?

Mostar is 130 km southwest of Sarajevo.

Local trains are the easiest and cheapest way to get to Mostar, but renting a car feels more secure and is quicker.

Beautiful house in Blagaj village on Buna spring: Best Day Trips from Sarajevo

Travelers going on road trips from Sarajevo to Mostar often also make the short detour to Blagaj. One of the most popular tourist attractions in southeastern Herzegovina, Blagaj is a small historical village town in the spring of the Buna River.

This spring, in front of towering cliffs, stands a beautiful 16 th -century “tekija,” a Dervish monastery. Constructed with both Ottoman and Mediterranean architectural elements, the Dervish monastery in Blagaj is a famous national monument in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

You only need a few hours to explore this tranquil riverside village—combining this with a more extended visit to Mostar is super easy.

3. skakavac waterfall.

Things to do in the Balkans_Skakavac-Waterfall | Balkans Travel Blog

Skakavac Waterfall is very close to Sarajevo and is one of the most famous sights in the area. If you drive or hike to the waterfall from the city, you can reach it in just 40 minutes. Locals often do this, as it only takes about 2-3 hours to get to Skakavac by foot.

Once you reach the waterfall after the steep ascent, you will be rewarded with stunning views of a water cascade falling from a majestic rock, with a wooden bridge in the foreground.

Skakavac Vodopad, or ‘Grasshopper Falls, ‘ plunges 96 meters down a slippery limestone cliff.  Skakavac’s water source is only a few hundred meters away from the waterfall. This has been made into a beautiful picnic area with tables and benches.

The waterfall is best viewed in two lookout points: Two hundred meters from the gravel road on the trail to the left is the first lookout point. The second lookout point is another 20 minutes down a steep but well-maintained trail. This trail brings you to the bottom of the waterfall, where the huge plunge can be enjoyed.

Whether you’re up for a picnic or a photo shoot, the scenic area of the Skakavac Waterfall will not disappoint you.

Skakavac Waterfall is just 12 kilometers north of Sarajevo . It is just a two-hour walk from the small village of Nahorevo. Take a local bus number 69 from Sutjeska Road to the end of the line.

4. Bjelašnica Or Igman

Bjelašnica and Igman are two mountains that are very close to one another and just about 30 minutes outside the city of Sarajevo .

They’re great for escaping the city crowds and very popular with the locals in the summer months when the scorching heat becomes unbearable. But they’re even more popular in the winter when locals and foreigners rush to the ski trails .

Of these two, Bjelašnica is the better option for experienced skiers, while Igman is more suitable for beginners. But honestly, you’re best off heading to Jahorina if you’re interested in skiing. Head to Bjelašnica if you want to sit down in a cozy cafe and enjoy a cup of coffee while admiring scenic mountain views.

But go to Igman if you’re more up for a picnic, hike, or just playing football with your friends on vast plains.

5. visoko – mysterious bosnian pyramids.

Visoko is a town just 30 minutes outside Sarajevo, best known for its ancient pyramids. You read that right—while there’s no concrete evidence that the massive pyramid-shaped hills are burial sights, their appearance alone was enough to boost the area’s tourism significantly.

You can also explore underground labyrinths below the “pyramids” and visit a museum that boasts a significant collection of items excavated there.

Whether or not you believe these are the oldest human-made pyramids is up to you, but it’s certainly worth visiting and seeing them with your own eyes. It’s definitely one of the top half-day trips from Sarajevo!

6. Počitelj

Best Day Trips From Sarajevo - Pocitelj landscape, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Situated to the south of Mostar and about 2.5 hours from Sarajevo, Počitelj is one of the greatest highlights of southern Bosnia-Herzegovina. It’s one of the best places to visit from Sarajevo for people who love history and culture. And considering that you’re reading about day tours from Sarajevo, we assume that you are!

This gorgeous village sits on the left bank of the scenic Neretva River and dates from the Middle Ages. During its long and eventful history, it’s seen Hungarian, Ottoman, and Venetian occupations, all of which left behind architectural and other marks. Nowadays, Počitelj is a welcoming and charming stone village worthy of at least an hour of your time.

On many Sarajevo trips, it is often combined with other nearby places like Blagaj Tekke, Mostar, and maybe Medjugorje . Best Day Trips From Sarajevo_jajce-watermills

Jajce is a small town in Central Bosnia, lying on the confluence of the rivers Pliva and Vrbas. It used to be the seat of the Bosnian king during the Bosnian Kingdom, and even nowadays, people refer to it as the “royal town.” One of the things you absolutely must do if you visit Jajce is to go to the fortress.

It offers a panoramic view of the town and neighboring mountains, which will have you staring in awe.

The same can be said for the magnificent Pliva waterfall. The Jajce area is stunning in its own right , but Pliva Waterfall is undoubtedly one of the central points.

At 17 meters high, the cascading water into the crystal clear scene below is something you need to see. The other plus point is that the waterfalls are extremely easy to reach. Head to the observation platform to get a magnificent view of the waterfall and enjoy this area’s overwhelming sense of calm and serenity.

The city park and Malo Plivsko Lake, which are just 5-10 minutes outside the proper town area, are also worth a visit. You can enjoy a picnic in the park , admire sensational nature, and see some ancient water mills that look absolutely wonderful.

National Parks In Bosnia Herzegovina - War Memorial Statue in Sutjeska National Park

As one of the oldest parks in the country, the Sutjeska National Park attracts people worldwide for many different reasons. It is home to one of the few remaining primeval forests in Europe , Perućica.

With beech trees over 60 meters tall and great views of the Skakavac Waterfall from the lookout point, the national park certainly does not disappoint when it comes to photogenic nature.

Obviously, it’s not the same waterfall as the one near Sarajevo; they share the same name! Sutjeska National Park is also home to Maglić, which happens to be the country’s tallest peak at over 2,386 meters. And that’s reason enough for avid hikers and mountaineers who want the opportunity to boast of conquering Bosnia’s tallest mountain.

If you’re going to experience an otherworldly sight in this national park, head to the Valley of Heroes. It is home to some genuinely eye-catching monuments, which are actually memorials for the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Sutjeska during WWII.

How far is Sutjeska National Park from Sarajevo?

9. Stoic Srebrenica

Small town Srebrenica will always be remembered for the Srebrenica massacre and Bosnian Genocide. Memorials have been erected for victims from both sides: the Bratunac Memorial for the Serbs and the Genocide Memorial for the Bosnians.

Srebrenica has many damaged homes and buildings that still stand testament to the war. Other than this stoic reminder of the past, Srebrenica is also home to natural thermal springs that are said to have healing properties.

How far is Srebrenica from Sarajevo?

Srebrenica is around 155 km from Sarajevo.

Best Day Trips From Sarajevo_konjic

Konjic is a small town about an hour away from Sarajevo, and it’s home to one of Yugoslavia’s best-kept secrets – an underground nuclear bunker, which happens to be the hottest attraction in the town.

The underground structure spreads over some 6400 square feet, with residential rooms, offices, strategic planning rooms, and other areas. It was built to house the then-leader of Yugoslavia – Josip Broz Tito – and some 350 of his closest confidants.

The bunker construction began in 1953 and lasted about 26 years, costing around $4.6 billion. What’s baffling is that the bunker remained secret until after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 90s.

We also recommend that you go on a walk around the town of Konjic. It’s pretty tiny, so it won’t take more than several hours to see the majority of it. But you just might get captivated by the spectacular views of the Stara Ćuprija (bridge), with tall mountain peaks in the background. Photographers will have the time of their lives capturing the sights.

Konjic is also a very popular rafting spot in the country, making it an the perfect place for the adrenaline-loving traveler . The untamed Neretva waters are no joke and pose a challenge even to the most experienced rafters there is – an adrenaline rush is guaranteed when you’re rushing down the wild river.

How far is Konjic from Sarajevo?

Konjic is about 58 km southwest of Sarajevo.

The harsh winter conditions make Kupres the perfect winter ski destination, and the town has several ski resorts , apartments, and guest houses.  Ski Staza Kupres and Snowpark Kupres are the most famous parks here!

If you can’t visit in winter, Kupres is also popular for the Strljanica competition in July, hiking, paragliding, boating, and hunting in summer. Kupres is home to the famous Kukavicko Lake, the Otinovci UNESCO World Heritage Site , and the Roman Catholic Basilica of the Holy Family.

Best Day Trips From Sarajevo_hajducka-vrata

Bosnia and Herzegovina  is heaven on Earth for climbers, hikers, and alpinists alike , thanks to the abundance of different mountain ranges. And Čvrsnica happens to be one of the most popular mountains for hikers, thanks to various trails suitable for people of all skill levels.

About an hour and a half outside Sarajevo, this mountain lies partially in Blidinje Nature Park – another phenomenal sight worth visiting, should you have the extra time.

But, by far, the best-known Čvrsnica attraction is a natural rock formation known as Hajdučka vrata. This natural phenomenon has attracted hikers worldwide because of the picturesque scenery and ease of ascent.

The trail that leads directly to the famous rock formation is relatively straightforward and suitable even for people with minimal hiking experience. But we recommend that you have at least one person who knows what they’re doing with you, just in case.

How far is Čvrsnica from Sarajevo?

Čvrsnica is 60 miles southwest of Sarajevo.

The fastest & cheapest way to get there is to drive, but you can also take a bus or taxi.

Nestled high in the Bjelasnica Mountains at 1495 m, the village of Lukomir is famous for the Stecak or Stecci tombstones from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Upper Village of Lukomir, known as Gornji Lukomir, is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s highest and remotest village. Lower Lukomir, or Donji Lukomir, sits 500 m below the Rakitnica Canyon and has green pastures perfect for hiking or spending some time experiencing culture preserved in dress and traditions.

14. Travnik

Just some 90 kilometers west of Sarajevo lies Travnik, a charming little city characterized by a fortress, a rushing river, and some of the country’s best ćevapi. Ćevapi are the most popular traditional dish in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

If you don’t get the opportunity to try them in Sarajevo , the second-best place in the country is Travnik! But don’t go there just for the food – instead, visit all the famous spots first to build up your appetite.

We highly recommend that you visit the Ivo Andrić Museum. The birth home of the renowned Bosnian writer was turned into a museum, and it offers some insight into the early life of the Nobel Prize-winning author.

Another sight you shouldn’t miss here is the Travnik castle and fortress. It was built in the first half of the 15th century, and today, it remains one of the best-preserved fortifications in the country! It’s a truly remarkable sight, but it offers even better views if you climb to the top.

How far is Travnik from Sarajevo?

Travnik is 92 km northwest of Sarajevo.

15. Banja Luka

Best Day Trips From Sarajevo - Banja Luka

Banja Luka is another town you should visit if you get the opportunity. It is the second-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the de facto capital of the entity of Republika Srpska.

It’s part of many of the best Sarajevo tours. The only issue is that it’s more than three and a half hours away from Sarajevo by car, and the journey’s even longer if you’re considering taking the bus or train.

However, it is more than worth the effort. For one thing, the city has its own variance of the popular ćevapi dish, which you unquestionably have to try. Let’s not dwell on the food too much, especially with so many gorgeous sights in the area.

The medieval Kastel fortress lies in the city’s center, right on the Vrbas river bank. Another popular sight in the city is Christ the Savior Orthodox Cathedral. The majestic church is stunning both inside and out, and we highly recommend going inside it if you have the extra time. There’s also the Ferhadija Mosque, which was built way back in the 16th century.

The Ottoman mosque and its gardens were destroyed during the war and rebuilt in the early 21st century. Today, they are a reminder that people of all religions and ethnicities can coexist in this astonishing country. However, the nasty nationalist politicians want you to believe otherwise.

How far is Banja Luka from Sarajevo?

It’s 200 km northwest of Sarajevo.

Best way to get to Banja Luka from Sarajevo

Kraljeva Sutjeska is a stunning village that is around 37 miles away from Sarajevo. The biggest highlight of the village, apart from its beauty, is the Franciscan monastery, which contains more than 11,000 books; this collection has huge value.

While you don’t need a full day to see this area, take your time and walk around, soaking up the relaxing atmosphere.

19. Kravica Waterfalls

Kravice Waterfalls - Kravice waterfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina

There are many impressive waterfalls to check out around the Balkans, but this is definitely one of the best. Kravica Falls is between the border with Croatia and the city of Mostar. 20. relaxing neum.

The only Bosnian town on the Adriatic Coast, Neum stretches over 22 km of coastline. Neum is an interesting place for scuba-diving, boating, jet skiing, parasailing, swimming, and water sports, with prices lower than the surrounding Croatian coastline. The Old Town of Neum, 2 km inland, has Stecaks and the Hutovo Fortress ruins to visit.

Neum is a pretty coastal area that is perfect for chilling out away from the city and enjoying amazing seafood. Here, you can dip your toes in the Adriatic and soak up the sun on the golden sand beaches.

The journey will take around 3.5 hours, but you should consider staying for one night if possible. The sunset is fantastic, and there are some great places to sit and enjoy the calm atmosphere during the evening.

How to take day trips from sarajevo.

If you can hire a car, you’ll have much more freedom than you would otherwise. This means you can explore the area around Sarajevo freely and at your own pace. However, if you don’t want to drive, you can still take these day trips.

Public transport is reliable and comfortable. However, you will need to research times depending on when you’re visiting; some areas may have fewer services during the winter months. The other option is to take a public tour, which usually gives you the benefit of a knowledgeable guide.

Lovely post! I enjoyed reading it! You picked great places! I hope you will not mind if I as a local and mountain & culture guide write a few comments.

I just want to add that Skakvac Waterfall is in Sarajevo, not close to it. Believe it or not, the fall belongs to the municipality of Center. I’m not sure where were did you start your drive to the fall that you had to drive 40-minutes, but usually from the main Marshal Tito’s street there is only 11 km (20-minute drive or less) to the entrance of the Nature Preserve Skakavac. If you don’t have car then I would recommend a bus (Gras company, number 69) to Nahorevo neighborhood (last stop) from Sutjeska street (close to BBI shopping mall). And from the last stop, you need to walk around 3 hours to get to the waterfall (depends how fit you are). If it’s really hot summer day I would recommend catching a cab to Dragan’s cafe, and to walk from there. Because the road from Nahorevo to the entrance into Nature Preserve Skakavac is steep and there is no shade. And from Dragan’s place starts the walk through the forest.

And I would like to add one more thing for a hike to Hajducka Gate at Cvrsnica. The hike from Blidinje Nature Park to Hajducka Gate is not technically demanding, but it can be physically demanding because you need around 4 hours to get to this natural rock formation and then back. In total it is around 7-hour long hike.

Best regards,

7 Lovely Day Trips From Sarajevo (Maps, Routes & Highlights)

Updated on April 26, 2024

Sarajevo is a stunning capital. The city contains so much history, some of which is still visible on the walls of the city center in the form of bullet holes. But if you go beyond Sarajevo, like Rachel and I did, you’ll find that this part of Bosnia contains some beautiful destinations too.

In this article, I want to share the best of our day trips from Sarajevo, with details, pictures, and personal recommendations, so you can make the most of your time in the capital of Bosnia.

1. Hike to the Bijambare cave

2. trnovacko jezero hike to montenegro, 3. visit beautiful mostar, 4. walk on the abandoned bobsled track, 5. visit konjic, 6. drive to donja jablanica and the blidinje national park, 7. visit blagaj (and its monastery), best time to visit sarajevo, wrapping up, 7 perfect day trips from sarajevo.

We stayed in Bosnia for 10 days and rented a small car for our entire stay. This car allowed us to see tons of amazing things, and I’ve collected the highlights right here! Of course, it’s up to you to decide what trips to include during your stay!

Day trip type: Hiking🚶🏿

  • Google Maps
  • Directions from Sarajevo

Rachel and I drove up to Bijambare cave on our first day from Sarajevo. It was a really relaxing day, especially with the locals out enjoying the area just as much as we were. We found a nice restaurant at the bottom of the hills where we grabbed lunch before our hike. The view from the cave was stunning, making the trip totally worth it. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for a peaceful day trip.

Bijambare cave in bosnia

This is a big one, but so worth it. In fact, this day trip might have been the best day of our time spent in Bosnia. We enjoyed it so much that we wrote an entire post about it, detailing every step of this beautiful hike to the Trnovacko Jezero .

But I’m including the main highlights here for you:

This is a long – but beautiful – drive from Sarajevo, so you best head out early. Pack enough food, because you’ll need it! I would advise you to leave Sarajevo at 07:00 AM so you’ll arrive at the car park at around 10:00 AM. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful hike.

The hike starts from this car park , which might be a little tricky to reach, but read our detailed post about it if you’re not sure if you can make it (you can!)

Tip : Bring your passport, because you’ll be crossing into Montenegro!

trnovacko lake hike beautiful route

This hike takes you through some of the most beautiful mountains of Eastern Europe, all the way up to the Trnovacko Jezero. This is a beautiful lake in the shape of a heart.

trnovacko lake hike bosnia montenegro border

Once you cross into Montenegro, you’ll be greeted by a ranger who’ll accept your (small) payment and tell you to have a good day. From here, you can relax and enjoy the views. You’ve deserved it!

trnovacko lake hike view from above

Since you have a long way back to Sarajevo, you’re best to be back at the car park at 15:00 (3 PM), to make it back before it gets too dark.

Day trip type: Leisure🏊‍♀️

Mostar may be the biggest tourist destination in Bosnia, and it’s well deserved. It’s a beautiful town that offers a lot of great sights, and the food here is great too!

Rachel and I soaked in all the beautiful sights of Mostar, from the iconic Stari Most bridge to the delightful restaurants. If you can, try to find a table at night for dinner with views of the bridge and river.

We also stepped into a mosque, which offered a glimpse into the Islamic culture of Bosnia. It’s a beautiful place with a rich history.

beautiful mostar

Day trip type: Viewpoint(s)⛰️

While this abandoned bobsled track is technically not a day trip from Sarajevo (I mean, you never have to leave Sarajevo to see this highlight), it’s still well worth the mention on this list!

Walking on this relic from the 1984 Olympics was a weird experience. It’s a bit eery, since there’s graffiti everywhere and some parts are a bit mossy and overgrown.

Kravica Waterfall

But I don’t know if there’s any other place on earth where you can experience a hike like this!

We decided to drive up to the mountain, but I don’t recommend it! Driving outside Sarajevo’s city center can be a bit … hectic.

So instead of trying to drive up the mountain yourself, take the easy route and park your car at Sarajevo’s gondola station . From here, you can walk to the Bobsled and walk on the tracks up and down the mountain!

hiking the Abandoned Bobsled Track in sarajevo

Tip : Don’t try to walk back to where you parked the car. Simply buy a return ticket and stay near the bobsled track! It’s much easier as you’ll stay on the trails and have less pathfinding to do!

Rachel and I spent a short day in Konjic, and really enjoyed the easy-going vibe. Its Ottoman-era bridge and the tranquil Neretva River were great for nice pictures! We wandered the old town’s cobbled streets and relaxed at a riverside café, enjoying local coffee and lunch.

Konjic in bosnia

Although we didn’t try rafting, it’s a popular activity in Konjic, offering thrilling rides down the Neretva. If we ever go back to Bosnia, this is definitely something we want to do!

Nonetheless, we enjoyed an easy and peaceful yet engaging day. If you ask me, these days are some of the nicest while on holiday, because they don’t deplete your energy all that much, and you actually get to relax and explore some small parts of a country that you would otherwise rush through!

On our trip to Donja Jablanica, Rachel and I headed to the collapsed railway bridge, an interesting place to shoot some photos. Afterwards, we enjoyed a lovely lunch at a local cafe.

Donja Jablanica and the collapsed railway bridge

If you’re in Donja Jablanica, you can do multiple things.

You can either hike up and down to the Outlaws Gate (a 6-hour hike up the mountains), which I described in more detail in this separate article .

Or you can road trip through the Blidinje National Park, which lies just on the doorstep of Donja Jablanica.

roadtripping through Blidinje National Park

Rachel and I set out to simply explore as much of this national park as possible, and we ended up driving this route straight through the park.

roadtrip through Blidinje National Park loop

While some of the roads are a bit “bumpy”, there was nothing that our little 2WD car (A small Skoda Citigo) couldn’t handle!

more roads on the Blidinje National Park

As you can see, the landscape is really varied, and it reminds me of some of the roads we traveled  when we were in Colorado ! While it definitely takes some time, this road trip is a good option if you’re already in the area of Donja Jablanica.

Tip : There aren’t a lot of restaurants in this area, so make sure you either pack some food or plan your restaurant visit wisely. We luckily  stumbled upon this local restaurant  where we enjoyed a nice lunch!

This one is a bit of a drive, but I’m still adding it to this list since it’s worth it in my opinion! Blagaj is known for its monastery right by the Buna River spring, and it offers some great photo opportunities.

The place is really peaceful and picturesque. The monastery, called Blagaj Tekija, is tucked against a high cliff, and it’s a sight to see with the river flowing right out from under it. We took some time just sitting by the water, enjoying the view and the calming sound of the river.

It’s not too far from Mostar, so it was an easy and rewarding getaway. Definitely a serene spot to check out if you’re nearby.

Tip : You can also combine this day trip with a trip to Mostar, and spend a night in Mostar. This allows you to visit both these places without having to drive back and forth a lot!

Short Answer : The best time to visit Sarajevo and its surroundings is from May to October.

Why? During this period, the weather is ideal, with comfortable temperatures and lower humidity, providing a pleasant environment for exploring and outdoor activities. The warmest time, with the least chance of significant precipitation, is mid to late August.

Off-Season Tip : Tourism peaks in July, August, and June, making these months the most crowded and expensive. For fewer crowds and potentially better deals, consider visiting in the shoulder months of May or October.

While you can easily spend a day or two in Sarajevo with all the cultural and historical landmarks, there’s lots of beauty to see in its surroundings. These day trips offer a way to explore the country beyond its capital, making your stay in Bosnia much richer and more diverse!

Did I miss anything important? Do you have anything to add to these day trips? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

ROAD TRIP IDEAS & HIKING INSPIRATION FOR OUTDOORSY TRAVELERS

What to do in and around Sarajevo if you are bored with the Old Town – Visiting Bosnia-Herzegovina

Sarajevo from above

Sharing is caring!

Sarajevo is a diverse city, a mix of east and west, a mix of religions. You can still observe the remaining scars of the Yugoslavian War, but otherwise, it’s a vivid and colorful place to visit, surrounded by beautiful mountains. In 2016   we spent a month there while traveling across the Western Balkans . It was such a pleasant stay that we returned to Sarajevo a year after. Check this list of our favorite spots outside of the Old Town to ensure you don’t miss out on anything during your holiday. Guaranteed you will enjoy visiting these sights and nature trails. The list starts with the easily accessible sights and ends with the best day trips you can do from Sarajevo.

Sights outside of the city center of Sarajevo

1. white fortress and the view over sarajevo.

Bijela Tabija, the "White Bastion"

Bijela Tabija, the “White Bastion,” lays on the eastern side of the old town. It’s quite a steep walk up there, but it worth every step. Although the building is a ruin, you will have an amazing view over Sarajevo. We visited it during the daytime, but it could be a perfect place for night observation too.

2. Bobsleigh Track from the 1984 Winter Olympics (Yugoslavia)

The abandoned bob sleigh track in Sarajevo

In 1984 Yugoslavia hosted the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, and several buildings and sports facilities still can be found in and around the city . Probably the most famous one is the bobsleigh track on the slope of Mount Trebević. It is south of the city and one popular lookout place for visitors. Although the Yugoslavian War and the decades didn’t keep the facility in the best shape, it is a must-visit place.

Off the beaten path sights in Sarajevo. Bob sleigh track. from the 1984 winter Olympics

3. The abandoned Čolina Kapa Astronomical Observatory

The Čolina Kapa astronomical observatory

Just right next to the bobsleigh track, on the top of a small hill on Mount Trebevic, you can find an old Fortress Astronomical Observatory. A second Word War military fortress was turned into an astronomical observatory, but it didn’t survive the war in the 1990s. The two buildings are left to decay, but local youngsters still often visit them to spend some time with a great view but without tourists. The buildings have no doors and windows, and the walls and floors have few holes as well. Only the ruin of one out of the three domes can be observed. The Colina Kapa Observatory was the only astronomical observatory in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

4. The Old People’s Home abandoned complex

The Old People’s Home is located a few km out of the center towards the west on Bulevar Mese Selimovica, right next door to the Radon Plaza hotel. The colorful building has notable many bullet holes as during the war, not all Serb soldiers were keen on shooting at Sarajevo’s civilian citizens, so some deliberately used up the rounds of ammunition allocated to them disproportionally targeting this building, which they knew was empty.

Sarajevo day trips:

1. skiing and hiking at bjelašnica, igman & jahorina (skiing) resorts.

Sarajevo Winter Olympics 1984 Yugoslavia

Another leftover from the Yugoslavian Olympics is half an hour’s drive from Sarajevo. In winter, get on the slopes and enjoy the cheap(er than any western destination) skiing holiday, and in the summertime, head to the peak of Bjelasnica on a day trek.

Sarajevo Winter Olympics 1984 Yugoslavia

2. Hike to the Skakavac Waterfall

Would you like to visit a 98 m tall waterfall just right next to Sarajevo? Although it is only 13 km away from the city, it took about an hour to drive there. The roads are curvy, and you need to ascent a while. After a 6 km long bumpy ride from Nahorevo village, we finally reached the parking place (and a buffet nearby). First, we were walking on the dirt road. Later, we entered the spectacular beech forest.

We could hear the roaring sound of the waterfall from a far distance, but it was still out of sight. We had to descend on numerous wooden stairs before we could observe them. It was indeed tall and impressive. I was about to take millions of cool pictures despite the clouds, but the rain had other plans for the day. It was drizzling, and we prepared to leave. On the way back to the car, we chose a slightly different but flatter trail.

Oh, and Skakavac means grasshopper .

3. Lukomir – the most remote village in BiH where the time stopped

Lukomir is the highest inhabited village in Bosnia-Herzegovina . It lays at 1,495 m on the southern ridge of Bjelašnica. It is also the last real Bosnian village.

It can be reached from Konjic (30 km) or Sarajevo (45 km). We approached it from the latter one. Although the distance is short, be prepared for a long drive. The first part of the road is paved, but the last about 10 km is a gravel road through the beautiful karst landscape. It took us 1 hour to reach the village. Alternatively, you can walk up on the mountain pass from Umoljani. It is a bit easier to reach, but either way, make sure your car has high clearance.

The village is inhabited since the 14th century, and in both architectural and cultural sense, it is a unique place to visit. The village inhabitants originated from a semi-nomadic ship herding tribe, who were living in the nearby Rakita Canyon, used the village seasonally. Later they settled down in Lukomir, and the nearby families also moved here. There are about 50 homes in the village, and less than half of them are inhabited during the summer. About 4000 sheep are grazing on the pastures around Lukomir.

As for the architecture, the stone houses are covered in oak, fir, and beech shingles. To adapt to the cold weather, the windows were small. The centers of the houses are the stoves. The village has all basic amenities such as telephone, electricity, water, and sewage systems. They even built a mosque in 1969.

Currently, the village is inhabited only during the summer, from May to October. During the winter, the roads are blocked due to the heavy snowfall. Earlier it totally cut off the villagers for half a year, and they had to deal with everything on their own.

On the edge of Lukomir, the earlier mentioned Rakitnica canyon lays. Don’t miss the view of it!

4. Vrelo Bosne: the spring of the Bosna River and the surrounding park

Vrelo Bosna, the spring of the Bosna river, is a huge green park at Mount Ingman’s foot. We had visited the place with our then half-a-year-old son. It is enjoyable to stroll around the green area and perfect for a picnic, and it is equipped with numerous tables and benches.

The entrance fee is 2KM (1KM for students etc.) is well worth the price.

Vrelo Bosna, the spring of the Bosna River

5. Day trip to Mostar

The Old Bridge of Mostar is under UNESCO World Heritage’s protection, and the town definitely worth a day trip from Sarajevo. The old town little streets are charming to walk around, but try to time your visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Read more about Mostar .

6. Trip to Sutjeska National Park

If you are keen on hiking in one of the most spectacular national parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sutjeska NP is a must-visit place. The best is to spend there a whole weekend, but if you are short on time, you can do only a day hike to its highest peak, Maglic, and head back to Sarajevo.

For those interested in history, Sutjeska most likely reminds you of the famous battle of WW2. There is a memorial near the village.

Read more about the battle and hiking in the Sutjeska National Park .

One Day in Sarajevo Itinerary – How to Spend a Perfect Day in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Famous for its cultural and religious diversity, Sarajevo is the place where the East and the West meet. Different than all others, the city is best described as a mixture of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav influences. In the past it suffered a lot. It has undergone centuries of Ottoman rule and even a 4 year long siege during the Yugoslav war in the 90’s. Today, the Bosnian capital is a vibrant place, full of charm and tradition, and a great place to spend at least one day in. You won’t regret it!

One day in Sarajevo Itinerary

What’s the best time to visit Sarajevo?

Sarajevo is beautiful to visit all year round . In warmer months, the city just overflows with energy and great atmosphere. The cafe terraces cover the whole city, people hang out outside, in the bars and next to the Miljacka river, parks turn lush. Winter can be especially charming, especially when there’s snow, but there are also less activities and less places open at that time of the year. Not to mention that winters can get really cold.

A few facts about Sarajevo

The city of Sarajevo is nestled in a valley, in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but just a few miles away from the Republika Srpska territory. Historically, it’s one of the most interesting and varied cities in the whole Europe.

Sarajevo

Due to the long Ottoman rule, the Ottoman influence is very present, especially in the Old Town – Baščaršija. During the Yugoslav Wars, the city was under a siege by Serbian forces for almost 4 years and was left quite destroyed. Since then, it has undergone post-war reconstruction and is now the fastest growing city in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One Day in Sarajevo Itinerary

Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do during your one day in Sarajevo.

Stroll around the Old Town

Baščaršija , or the Sarajevo Old Town, is where most of the things from this itinerary are located. It’s actually not that big in size, and it’s super easy to explore if you only have one day in Sarajevo.

Start at the Baščaršija Square, check out the Sebilj Brunnen Fountain and get lost in the cobblestone streets of the Old Town. The charming streets are full of cafes and restaurants in Ottoman style and bazaar shops, which will surely give you a certain Turkish feel. Finally, visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the biggest mosque in Sarajevo center and the place of Islamic worship. The Mosque was built in 1531 as an endowment of Bosnian sandžakbeg Gazi Husrev-Bey.

Try the Turkish coffee

Ottoman influence is visible everywhere – from religion to architecture, clothing and food. The same is with the coffee. Turkish coffee , although spread all over the Balkan countries, is most popular in Bosnia. Start your day in one of the many coffee shops in Ottoman style around the Old Town. They mostly serve it with the rahat lokum – Turkish delight based on a gel of starch and sugar, usually with chopped nuts inside. Try it!

Have a burek for breakfast

The best burek in the world is made in Bosnia. It is a pastry made of a thin dough filled with minced meat, cheese, spinach or apple. The best one in the city you’ll find in  Burekdžinica Bosna , very close to the Baščaršija square. The burek is served per grams, so you can try different types. Also, make sure to put some cream on the top.

Burek in Sarajevo

Shop for souvenirs at Baščaršija and visit the old Bazaar building

The Baščaršija market , a synonym of the Turkish bazaar, is the best place to shop for some oriental souvenirs. Most of the products are either jewelry, pottery, metalware or textiles. Choose between handmade jewelry, scarf pashminas, traditional Bosnian rugs, metal džezvas (coffee pots) or decorated terracotta plates. They are all very much authentic and original.

Bascarsija, Sarajevo

For a wider selection of jewelry and accessories, visit the Gazi Husrev Bey’s Bezistan , a covered bazaar from the 16th century where during the Ottoman time textile was traded. Tašlihan, the other bazaar structure next to it, was built during the same time, but was badly damaged in a fire in 1879. Its remains are still present and can be seen from the street.

Gazi Husrev Bey’s Bezistan, Sarajevo

Visit the attractions along the Miljacka river

Walk along the Miljacka river and check out the place where WWI started. It’s the exact spot where Franz Ferdinand and his wife were shot dead in 1914.

Miljacka River, Sarajevo

Pass the Latin bridge and relax a bit at the at Mejdan park . Visit the Music Pavilion in the park and drink something refreshing in the shades of the trees.

Latin bridge, Sarajevo

Walk east for a few minutes and you’ll notice the Inat house , which translated means the House of spite. The exact same house used to stand on the other side of the river, before the City Hall was built. The stubborn owner didn’t want to have his house demolished, so he insisted on moving the house, brick by brick, to the other side of the river. Today, the house is a lovely traditional Bosnian restaurant.

Visit the City Hall

Finally, pass the Seher-Cehaj’s bridge and visit the spectacular City Hall in Pseudo-Moorish style. It was built during the Austro-Hungarian rule in 1891 and renovated at the beginning of this century.

City Hall, Sarajevo

It was used as a library, but was demolished in 1992, during the Siege of Sarajevo. Many books, manuscripts and artifacts were completely destroyed at that time. Visit the exhibition that says more about the building and its history. The entrance fee is 5KM.

City Hall, Sarajevo

Have some čevapčići for lunch

While in Bosnia, don’t miss the most delicious Bosnian meat specialty. Čevapčići are a minced meat dish served in a bread with the kajmak cream cheese and onions. There are many čevapčići restaurants in the city, but the best ones are  Željo and Petica . Keep in mind they don’t serve alcohol in those places.

Visit the Sarajevo War Tunnel

Don’t miss the chance to see the Sarajevo War Tunnel and the Tunnel Museum. This tunnel was built as an underground passage through the whole city during the four-year siege of Sarajevo in the 90’s. Since the city was cut off from the rest of the country and therefore from the rest of the world, it was the only way the life support materials and food could be moved through and into the city. The construction took 6 months, and the whole thing was completely built by volunteers and all by manual labour. The private house in whose cellar the entrance to the tunnel was located today serves as a museum.

Tunnel Museum, Sarajevo

Watch the most beautiful Sarajevo sunset

Head up to the Yellow Fortress (Žuta Tabija) right before the sun sets behind the mountains that surround the city. Even if you don’t come at sunset, it’s still a great spot for a breathtaking panoramic view. You can reach the place by taxi or you can climb up the hill and include a visit to t he cemetery of young victims of the war on your way there.

The cemetery of young victims of the war, Sarajevo

It’s time for Sarajevo nightlife!

Start your night at one of the two parallel streets –  Muvekita or Strossmayer . It’s the area where many famous bars are located. On weekends they usually play live music, so make sure to check the schedule on time and arrive a bit earlier.

After the bars, head to Sloga – the most famous club in Sarajevo. They also play live concerts, so check out their Facebook page if you want to learn about upcoming events.

DAY TRIPS FROM SARAJEVO

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country absolutely brimming with different cultures and this city is a great example of that. However, there are other fascinating places to visit, so day trips from Sarajevo are very rewarding experiences. Read about some of the most popular destinations below.

Mostar, the capital of Herzegovina region, is an absolutely beautiful city to visit. Just like in the rest of the country, you will notice a mixture of cultures wherever you look. Stroll along the river Neretva and visit the iconic Old Bridge , Mostar’s greatest symbol, and its historic surrounding.

This day trip from Sarajevo will be very enlightening. The story of Srebrenica is the story of how Yugoslavia ceased to be, and coming here will show you everything about the terrible war that took place in the Balkans in the early 1990s. The town is the site of an unspeakable massacre which is considered to be the worst such act after WWII. Today, fortunately, it is a quaint little town with excellent food and a lot to teach you.

Pliva waterfalls

If you’re looking for some incredible nature, head to the town of Jajce . Pliva waterfalls will not disappoint you – their location in the city center makes for a unique surrounding and the perfect opportunity to snap some incredible photos. If you venture out of town, however, you will soon come across the Large and the Small Pliva Lake, which is another opportunity to enjoy nature. Don’t forget about the town either – it was the capital of the medieval Kingdom of Bosnia.

To understand why the Ottoman influence is so prevalent in the whole country, you only need to visit Travnik. This now rather small town was once the capital of the province of Bosnia in the Ottoman Empire and an extremely important city. You will see buildings from that period practically at every corner, with the city fortress being probably the most important sight to see. Foodies will love it here as you can try some fantastic čevapčići at very affordable prices.

Catholic believers won’t miss the opportunity to visit Međugorje, the place where, allegedly, Virgin Mary talked to six local children. Today, this place is visited by thousands upon thousands of pilgrims from all over the world, and you will probably see that when you get there. There is also a special aura of serenity around this place, plus the city of Mostar is very close by, so you can incorporate it into your day trip.

Extra tips for visiting Sarajevo

– The official currency in Bosnia is the Convertible Mark . Since 1 EUR is exactly 2 KM. it’s very easy to calculate the price. Just divide it by two.

– Taxis in Sarajevo are very cheap , but make sure the driver turns the meter on.

– If you’re planning to visit the Mosque and religious sites, bring some long sleeve modest clothes . At times, women are not required to wear scarves, but it’s always good to have one.

The Best Day Trips from Sarajevo, Bosnia

Kravice waterfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Visitors have the chance to experience historical Ottoman towns, former capitals, magnificent canyons and mountains on a day trip from Sarajevo . Independent travel works well for some; others are better with a tour guide to explain the context. So, if you have visited all of Sarajevo’s must-see attractions and enjoyed the best Bosnian traditional food, check out the following day trips.

Herzegovina’s capital, Mostar, attracts vast numbers of tourists to see the 16th-century Ottoman Stari Most, a bridge connecting both sides of the city over the River Neretva. You can find lots of things to do in Mostar from walking through the Old Bazaar, eating Bosnian food on a terrace overlooking the river to climbing the Franciscan Church’s 108 metre (354 feet) bell tower. Both sides of the River Neretva feel different with branching Ottoman alleys to the east and a Croatian-like neighbourhood on the west.

Visiting Mostar is a must on any trip to Bosnia. Either take the bus or train from Sarajevo to Mostar, which passes through some of Herzegovina’s best scenery with tall lush canyons divided by a blue-green meandering river. Or, join an organised tour from Sarajevo that provides transport and a guide.

The Old Bridge in Mostar on a beautiful summer day, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Travnik was the Ottoman capital earning the nickname ‘the most Oriental City in Bosnia’. Located in the Lasva Valley 86 kilometres (53 miles) from Sarajevo, the town has Ottoman architecture, the Travnik castle (15th-century), mosques and clock towers. If you’re a fan of history, visit Travnik on a day trip from Sarajevo. Buses leave every hour from the bus station taking approximately one and a half hours. Or join Sarajevo Funky Tours , which visits Travnik, Jajce, the Bosnian Pyramids and Pliva Lakes. Tours cost €65 ($77) and start at 8:00 am.

Srebrenica Tour

Sarajevo Funky Tours has a day trip to Srebrenica, the location of the worst atrocity in the Bosnian War. In July 1995, under the orders of General Ratko Mladic, ‘the Butcher of Bosnia’, troops machine-gunned more than 8000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys over the age of 12 in the so-called UN safe zone. The small northeast Bosnian town changed forever, displacing up to 30,000 civilians and receiving the title as the worst European massacre since the Holocaust.

The daily Srebrenica Tour starts at 8:00 am from Sarajevo and returns in the early evening costing €60 ($70) per person. Expect a sad, but necessary, experience to appreciate the atrocities of the late 20th-century Bosnian Genocide.

Srebrenica Massacre Memorial Gravestones

The Bosnian Pyramids

Did you know you could potentially visit the world’s largest pyramid that dwarfs the Pyramid of Giza on a day trip from Sarajevo? The Bosnian Pyramids are perhaps a collection of human-made structures in Visoko with healing properties. But the scientific community believes it’s a complete hoax to drive tourism to Sarajevo and Bosnia. Convincing evidence exists but isn’t globally accepted.

You can visit the Pyramids using public transport or as a Sarajevo excursion with a guide. Hourly buses leave the city’s central bus station to Visoko, and the trip takes approximately an hour. Bosnian Pyramid offers day tours around the archaeological complex. A guided visit involves in-depth descriptions of archaeological evidence from trained professionals.

Total Herzegovina Tour

If you’re travelling around the Balkans and plan to visit either Croatia or Montenegro, the Total Herzegovina by Funky Tours is the best day trip from Sarajevo. Not only will you get to see all of Herzegovina’s top attractions, but you’ll also end up in either Croatia’s Dubrovnik or Montenegro’s Kotor. The tour combines sightseeing with reaching your next destination.

The trip starts from Sarajevo to Mostar via Konjic to see the famous six-arched Stara Cuprija Bridge and Jablanicko Lake. Keep your camera on standby as you pass through the picturesque Neretva River Canyon with craggy green mountains and the meandering jade river. In Mostar , a two-hour walking tour takes you to the Old Bazaar and Stari Most before heading to Blagaj Town’s Buna River Spring, the Dervish House (Blagaj Tekke), the Ottoman era Pocitelj and finally, Kravica Waterfalls.

Tourists who are travelling to either Croatia or Montenegro should consider this day trip from Sarajevo for €109 ($128) to experience everything Herzegovina has to offer. Those with a limited amount of time find the Total Herzegovina Tour excellent value for money and the best way to see everything the region has to offer.

One day in Sarajevo Itinerary: Best things to do in Sarajevo

Love it? Share it!

Sarajevo brought my history classes into life. It is one of those underrated cities in Europe that deserves a place in your travel bucket list . We are sharing a fascinating one day in Sarajevo itinerary, to inspire you to visit and learn more about it.

Sarajevo is the capital city of the Balkan state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A city that ignited the start of the First World War, is recorded to have the world’s longest siege in modern history, and most importantly it is the meeting point of cultures – of the east and the west. Here are the finest things to do in Sarajevo in one day.

“When you step into the old town of Sarajevo, a myriad of small shops welcome you – sprinkling the reminisces of the bygone Ottoman Empire. Once you leave the bazaar, a torn page of modern world history awaits you; and as you move further away a heart-wrenching saga of human spirit and perseverance will leave you teary-eyed and introspecting for more.

Is one day in Sarajevo enough

Sarajevo is a unique destination, and deserves a few visits to understand the city and its past. I have been learning about the city and the Balkans since 2006, and to see the books take shape into reality was intriguing.

We are sharing this well-curated itinerary for you to make the most of your trip. Because the city has very distinct areas, and not a lot of tourists, it is easy to explore the highlights in one day in Sarajevo.

We highly recommend a few tours that will be helpful in understanding the city’s past as well as explore them in a day.

The Miljacka

History of Sarajevo and its significance in world history

efore we begin the one day Sarajevo itinerary, we like to share a little bit about the city’s history. Sarajevo is unlike any other European capital city. As you explore the city, you will find

  • Turkish/Ottoman markets and culinary traditions – the years from 15-17th centuries
  • Austro-Hungarian architecture and buildings like the City Hall – 18th- early 20th century (including the assissination of Archduke Ferdinand)
  • Erstwhile Yugoslavian remains like the 1984 Winter Olympics complex
  • Most importantly the scars and tears from the 1992-95 Siege and attack by its neighbours

It is okay not to remember the chronology (as a History graduate I am just used to it), but it is important to appreciate the city’s colorful and mixed past; it is truly a meeting point of cultures!

Cafes in Sarajevo

Breakfast at The Address Cafe – Old Town

Start your day bright and early in old town Sarajevo. Stop for breakfast at The Address – this restaurant is located at the entrance of the old town. There are many cafes in the same block for you to choose from.

We found a table near the window, with views of the tram and the iconic Sebilj fountain. Toast and omelet, with vegetables and cappuccino to warm up the belly. (You can swap up for Bosnian coffee if you like. We left it for the evening after some pastries :))

Admire the Sebilj brunnen – Iconic fountain

Sebilj Brunnen is the iconic landmark in Sarajevo. It sits pretty at the old town – in the centre of Baščaršija square, surrounded by cafes and shops, and lots of pigeons and people, hanging out in the vicinity.

One day in Sarajevo old town

The Sebilj is an Ottoman-style wooden fountain, built in the mid 18th century.

Sebilj or sebil word is of Arabic origin that means a place of rest and refresh water for travelers. There were many fountains in the compact city of Sarajevo. However, with the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire, many of the Sebilj disappeared, only to be resurfaced and revived during the Yugoslavian period.

Explore Baščaršija – Historic City centre

From the Sebilj fountain, take some time to wander the historic city center. The old town or Baščaršija was built in the 15th century when the city was founded. Sarajevo was founded by Isa-Beg Ishaković, an Ottoman Bosnian general.

Baščaršija is Sarajevo's old bazaar

The word Baščaršija derives from the Turkish language, where  “baš” means “head”, or “primary”, “capital” and “čaršija” means “bazaar” or “market.

No wonder the market place is stunning and a delight, especially in the morning when the shops and cafes are just opening up.

Sarajevo Souvenirs made from shells, bullets

Inside the Baščaršija, there are mosques, madrasas, churches, Jewish synagogue, museums, and of course shops and cafes.

Find Sarajevo roses on the streets

While you are on the go, and exploring the old town look for red spots on the ground/streets. These red spots are called ‘Sarajevo roses’, and they were painted in red.

Things to do in Sarajevo - Sarajevo Roses

A Sarajevo Rose is a type of memorial in the city. During the siege of Sarajevo in 1992-95, the city was heavily bombed. The damage caused by the mortar shell’s explosion that was later filled with red paint.

The paint looks like ‘roses’ and are memories of those difficult years. There are around 200 “roses” in the entire city, and they are marked on locations where at least three persons have been killed during the siege of Sarajevo.

Take a free walking tour

Opt for a free walking tour of the historic city center. There many tour operators and agencies who take you around, share their story and of the city. It is a great way to get an introduction to Sarajevo.

Old town Sarajevo itinerary

Most tours start at 10 or 10:30, and last 1 to 2 hours, and are completed on foot. Almost of the city highlights are covered – Old Orthodox Church, Baščaršija Square – Sebilj Fountain, Oldest Street in Sarajevo, City Hall, Caravan Saray – Morića Han, Gazi Husrev-bey’s Mosque and Clock Tower, Meeting of Cultures Spot, Jewish Synagogue, Cathedral of Sacred Jesus’ Heart, Sarajevo Roses, Hotel Europe, Latin bridge and more.

Here are 2 walking trees we recommend, with two different start times, covering the same or similar itinerary stops

Latin Bridge and museum

The spot that I was really looking forward to visit, the Latin Bridge. This is the very spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated, which ultimately led to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Latin Bridge Sarajevo one day itinerary

The original Latin Bridge was made of wood, and was built in the 16th century. With floods ravaging through the city in the late 18th century, the Latin Bridge was designed in Ottoman style. The river Miljacka flows underneath the Latin Bridge.

The bridge today is like any other, no special signage or anything that screams “touristy”. There used to be a concrete memorial that marked the incident, but was later removed during the siege.

Museum in Sarajevo

There is a musuem located near the bridge, that depicts the history of Sarajevo, and of the assassination.

Note: No swimming in the Miljacka river , city center.

Vijećnica – City Hall

The Sarajevo City Hall is called the Vijećnica, located in the city center. The decorative City Hall of Sarajevo was designed by a Czech architect in the 19th century. It served as a symbol of the meeting of world civilizations, during the Austro-Hungarian period.

Sarajevo City Hall, known as Vijećnica

The City Hall was home to a lot of literary treasures, most of which were destroyed during the 1992-95 Siege.

Sacred Heart Cathedral

Sarajevo Cathedral or the Sacred Heart Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the country. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, and is the center of Catholic worship in the city. It was built in 1881, in neo-Gothic style.

Sarajevo Cathedral

The cathedral has 2 spires, and 6 bells with impressive interiors. It is free to enter, and just outside the cathedral you will find Sarajevo roses.

There’s a statue of Pope John Paul II at the entrance, who visited in 1997 after the war/ siege ended.

Eternal Flame

From the Cathedral, you will see the Eternal Flame. It is a monument dedicated to the military and civilians who lost their lives during the Second World War.

Tašlihan near Europe Hotel

Tašlihan is an inn, where travelers would stay and relax. Near the Hotel Europe in the old town, the remains of a large fort-like structure can be seen.

Tašlihan Europe Hotel

They were built on two levels and could accommodate an entire caravan, with all of the pack horses and merchants. It had one entrance, with an open courtyard area, for loading and unloading of goods.

Today it serves as the summer garden, as part of Sarajevo’s Europe Hotel (which was built on top of the remains of Tašlihan built between 1540 and 1543 by the Ottoman Governor, Gazi Husrev Bey).

Meeting of Cultures

“Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures” is the message marked on concrete on Ferhadija St., near Gazi Husrev Bey’s Bezistan. Sarajevo glows with richness – of cultures, intermixing of unique backgrounds. The spot where two dominant cultures merge is marked as a reminder to the locals and visitors to the city.

Meeting of Cultures Sarajevo one day itinerary

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque

The Gazi Husrev beg Mosque was built in the 16th century by Gazi Husrev – Sultan of the city. The mosque was built in a complex set up with multi-domed mosques, and madrasas, fountains on site;  and it represents the Early Period of Classical Ottoman Architecture.

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in one day in Sarajevo itinerary

Gazi Husrev beg Mosque was the first mosque in the world to receive electricity and electric illumination in 1898 during the period of Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It is the largest historical mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most representative Ottoman structures in the Balkans.

Break for lunch at Cevabdzinica Zeljo

You got to try cevapi in the Balkans. Ćevapi or ćevapčići (pronounced CHAE-vap or CHAE-vap-ee) is hand-shaped, caseless sausage, served with bread, onions, tomato paste, etc. It is popular in Croatia , Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, and other countries in the Balkans region.

Although each Balkan state has a different version of the cevapi – do try it in the heart of Sarajevo.Choose Cevabdzinica Zeljo for a full meal (or share with your loved one, as you half day of sightseeing to go).

Bosnian Coffee - One day in Sarajevo itinerary

Follow up with a cup of Bosnian Coffee and pastry! Yum!

Sarajevo Tunnel – Afternoon tour

Visiting the Sarajevo Tunnel was on my bucket list (along with the Latin Bridge, of course). And it is one of the best things to do in Sarajevo.

We booked an online tour of 4 hours that included return transportation from the city center, history guide to the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum, Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track, and the Yellow fortress.

You can choose a morning or afternoon tour. We chose the afternoon tour at 02:00 pm so that we could capture sunset from the fortress.

Sarajevo Tunnel

Sarajevo Tunnel was a tunnel built during the Siege of Sarajevo, in the Bosnian War. It was built by the Bosnian Army to connect parts of the city in the war zone. The city of Sarajevo was completely cut off by Serbian forces, and the Sarajevo Airport was controlled by the United Nations.

War tunnel museum - Things to do in Sarajevo

Something to think about, the war hardships existed while the United Nations was present inside the country, which sometimes negates their value/authority.

Anyhow.

The war tunnel, also known as Tunel spasa and Tunnel of Hope, linked the Sarajevo neighborhoods of Dobrinja and Butmir. It was an 800m-long, 1m-wide, 1.6m-high tunnel between two houses on opposite sides of the airport runway. And this allowed food, war supplies, and humanitarian aid to come into the city.

Sarajevo war tunnel - one day in Sarajevo itinerary

Bonsians men mostly would walk through the tunnel to get food and medicines for the family. As the tunnel is not very high, many had to stoop and cover the entire distance bending their backs.

After the war, the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum was built onto the historic private house whose cellar served as the entrance to the Sarajevo Tunnel – northern entrance. We were able to walk down a small length of the tunnel (approximately 20 meters).

The “house” museum exhibits archival materials including an 18-minute-long movie, war photographs, military equipment, flags, military uniforms, etc. We highly recommended watching the movie to get a sense of what happened at that time.

It’s very intriguing, I mean, its modern history, the siege happened not too long ago.

Sarajevo Roses in War Tunnel

When we visited the museum and the site with our guide, he mentioned that even the locals today find it hard to understand and make sense of what happened – the city had Croats, Serbs, Muslims, and Christians for a long time, and then the war happened – for them, it was like a brother against each other.

Today, Bosnia and Herzegovina present a unique political situation with 3 Presidents and two jurisdictions within the capital city of Sarajevo. Taxi number plates are different, school syllabus is different, dialect slightly changes yea, a very unique place.

Abandoned Olympic Bobsleigh

Said to be one of the off-beat attractions in Sarajevo and the Balkans in general is the abandoned 1984 Olympics complex. The graffiti on the bobsleigh track invites explorers and photographers alike.

Sarajevo Bobsleigh Best things to see in Sarajevo

To be honest with you, the place is really eerie, as colorful as it might look from the photos, it looks haunted. Haunted by the ghosts of past victories of the non-aligned countries, of erstwhile Yugoslavia and struggles from within.

Let’s start with Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was a country in the 20th century. It came into existence after World War I in 1918 . It was formed by merging the current states/countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia & Montenegro. Their capital was Belgrade, capital of today’s Serbia.

Abandoned Sarajevo Olympics

Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, and it was the first for a Socialist – non-aligned country to do so. And many were looking at a brighter future.

Which only a decade later, was completely destroyed, the city including the bobsleigh and luge tracks were turned into war and artillery zones, ultimately leading to the deaths of thousands of civilians.

The next winter Olympics were hosted in Calgary Canada , which is home, and we can’t imagine the site to look like the one in Sarajevo, totally abandoned, filled with mosses and bullet holes, really breaks my heart thinking about it. The city had gone through a lot in recent years.

OId Jewish Cemetery and the Sniper Alley

The OId Jewish Cemetery in Sarajevo is a 500 year old cemetery, located on the slopes of Trebević mountain (Kovačići-Debelo Brdo area, in the south-western part of the city).

It is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in South-East Europe, and was in use from the beginning of the 16th to 1966, and is currently closed.

Old Jewish Cemetery Sarajevo

During the Bosnian/Siege of Sarajevo war, the cemetery was used as an artillery position by Bosnian Serbs. There is a look-out area/point from the Cemetery to the city, which was the deadly Sniper Alley.

In the Cemetery itself, you will notice severe damage caused by bullets and explosions.

Žuta Tabija the Yellow Fortress in the evening

There are 2 fortresses overlooking the historic city of Sarajevo. We visited the Yellow Fortress – Zuta Tabija as it offered better views of the city (the white fortress was also under construction. It is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Sarajevo views from Yellow Fortress

The Yellow Fortress is a cannon fortress, built in the 18th century at the entrance of the “Walled City of Vratnik”. It served as one of the defense points against the Austro-Hungarian troops in the 19th century.

The views of the city and the sunset over the mosques, church towers, and thousands of glittering lights just makes my heart melt.

Sunsets in Sarajevo : One day in Sarajevo

With it, you will also find many graves scattered in and around the city, reflecting the hardships and sacrifices of those who left us. It is a surreal feeling, just take you to a different world altogether!

Entry is free!

Dinner: More cevapi and potato pie

After an eventful sightseeing and learning day, head to the old town for dinner. Try another round of cevapi and add potato pie to the mix.

Super fine “krompirusa” (or potato pie) is made of thin dough, filled with chopped potatoes and a small amount of chopped onions.

Dinner in Sarajevo - Cevapi and Potato Pie

Recommended restaurants: Caffe “Kamarija-Point of view”; Buregdžinica Bosna.

If this one day in Sarajevo itinerary is fast for you, then you can split it into 2 days – heading to the Tunnel Musume the next day. But remember the city is quite compact and can be explored easily in one full day.

Sleep: Hotels in Sarajevo

We stayed in Sarajevo for a few days and used the time to relax and take day trips. Our hotel in the city was located near the cusp of the old town and the tram lines. We stayed at the Hotel Plaza.

Views from Hotel Plaza, Sarajevo itinerary

  • Hotel Plaza: Mid-range hotel, in an apartment-style building with access to balcony and hill views. The old town just steps away. Book your stay here.
  • Hotel Europe : Fine hotel with cozy rooms with a gym, an indoor pool & a spa with saunas. It is located in the heart of the old town. Reviews for the hotel are very positive, click to find out more
  • Courtyard by Marriott Sarajevo : A 4-star hotel, with a mid-range price tag, the Courtyard by Marriott Sarajevo offers free breakfast and wifi, with a contemporary vibe. Click to view more about the hotel

Day trips from Sarajevo

Have more than one day in Sarajevo? Choose a day trip from the city to make the most of your vacation

  • Mountain Trebević – If you are visiting Sarajevo in winter or off-season, utilize the Sarajevo cable car to mountain Trebević, and you can spend an entire day there, hang out in one of the newly built resorts and check out the various landmarks.
  • Mostar – Mostar is probably the most popular day trip from Sarajevo. Mostar is located in the southern part of the country, in the warmer regions of Herzegovina. Enjoy a road trip to the old town, admire the Stari Most, and learn about its history (which suffered a similar fate like Sarajevo), roam the Turkish bazaar, and collect souvenirs.

Sarajevo Travel Tips

Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia & Herzegovina. It is located in the southeastern/ Balkan peninsula region. It is not a part of the European Union, nor the Schengen zone.

Packing for Sarajevo

Sarajevo experiences 4 seasons in a year, so expect chilly cold weather in winters and warmer temperatures during summer.

day trips sarajevo

Public transport

Sarajevo’s compact city centre is completely walkable, but there are also trams, trolleybuses, and buses for getting around the city. Taxi and tram tickets are very cheap/affordable, as compared to many other capital cities in Europe.

For Sarajevo

I think a lot about cities. And part of that interest arises due to my educational background in history. Sarajevo and Bosnia Herzegovina sounded intriguing and interesting even before I visited. I was prepared and was looking forward to exploring this unique young country, with centuries-old traditions. We arrived in Sarajevo late evening, and it was a cold spring day, the streets were empty, but lights were still glowing in tall buildings, a mosque, a church, bridges and a unique looking tower that greeted us at the bus station.  More welcoming were the people, and the brightly shining moonlight! Oh, Sarajevo, you are stunning; just as I dreamed of you!

We hope you enjoyed our one day in Sarajevo itinerary. We were fortunate to be able to explore all of the finest things to do in Sarajevo, and curated this list for you.

Top Sarajevo Day Trips by David Hoffmann

day trips sarajevo

[wzslider] Although it is not a very big city, being home to about 400,000 people, Sarajevo is a lively and vibrant destination ideal for travelers who desire a more authentic European experience. Sometimes it is easy to forget that Sarajevo is a great base from which to day trip to surrounding areas. Sarajevo is the fascinating capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the skyline is pierced by minarets and cathedral’s spires. It has always been a place where east and west converge, where you can hear the cry of the muezzin accompanied by cathedral bells, and where the central mosque, the synagogue and Christian churches lie just a few meters from one from another.

Many tourists come to Sarajevo drawn by its history, its Ottoman architecture, bazaars, picturesque cobblestone streets, and chic café culture. Driving out of the city will reveal Bosnia’s lush countryside and bring you to incredible Ottoman-era constructions, culinary delights, and unspoiled scenery.

Here are our choices for the top Sarajevo Day Trips:

Višegrad is a small town, not very spectacular if it wasn’t for its absolutely enchanting Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular attraction for tourists from all over the world. The town is situated on the banks of the Drina River whose emerald waters are crossed by this architectural masterpiece. Mimar Sinan, considered to be the greatest architect of the Ottoman Empire, designed the bridge. It was built in 1577 by order of Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović. The bridge features 11 stone arches and spans a length of 180 meters. The Višegrad Bridge was made famous by Yugoslavian author Ivo Andric, who wrote a novel titled The Bridge Over the Drina, a story spanning four centuries about the town of Višegrad and its turbulent history. For this and his other books, Andric received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1961.

Known as the most oriental city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Travnik was the capital city and military center during Ottoman control in Bosnia. During this time 77 viziers resided here, which is why the town has kept much of its Ottoman influence. For this Travnik is a great Sarajevo day trip idea. The town is located in the Lašva river valley and is the birthplace of Nobel Prize winning author, Ivo Andric. Most travelers are drawn to Travnik’s architecture. The 19th century Haji Alibery Mosque, 15th century castle in the Stari Grad, and two 18th century clock towers are just a few constructions to admire here. For an epic Ćevapčići (pronounced che-vap-chee-chee) meal, head to the Plavna Voda district under beneath the castle, where you can enjoy inexpensive local dishes and fresh trout at one of the local restaurants. We especially liked Hari Restaurant. Here you can order Ćevapčići in portions of 5, 10, 15 or 20!

Of all the Sarajevo day trips, Lukomir is definitely the most remote. This quaint village is situated at an altitude of 1,500 meters in the mountains southwest of Sarajevo. It is the perfect example of traditional Bosnian culture. Its inhabitants still live in unique stone houses with cherry-wood roof tiles. It is the highest and most isolated village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a place where tradition continues to be respected and women still wear hand-knitted costumes that have been worn by all their ancestors. Most of the locals are shepherds making a living from selling sheep products. From winter to late April you can get here only by skis or on foot. The village is a great base for hiking trips along the Rakitnica Canyon and Peruće Waterfall.

Konjic is the one of the oldest permanent settlements in Bosnia and Herzegovina, dating back almost 4,000 years! It is situated between Sarajevo and Mostar, on the Neretva River and is one of the best known Sarajevo day trip especially due to its abundance of natural beauty. Dominated by the silhouette of Prenj Mountain, Konjic is a picturesque town that can become a great day trip destination from Sarajevo. Its main attraction is the Kamena cuprija (Stone Bridge) built in 1682 by the Ottomans and reconstructed in 2009. Nature lovers should head to the Boracko Lake, a glacier lake, where they can swim or fish. This is also a great spot for picnics and barbecues.

All the beauties of the Old Stone bridge in Konjic can be seen on the following video:

Our policy steadfastly avoids requiring travelers to pay essential entrance fees on-site, typically in cash, a practice often used deceitfully to show a lower advertised tour price. We are committed to transparency in pricing, ensuring our guests do not face the inconvenience of surprise additional costs for essential entrance fees. Funky Tours is all about transparency (no hidden tour costs ever).
  • Online Payment by credit card. It is hassle-free; no cash is needed when doing tours with us.

What's Included

  • Definite Departure (check-up calendar for available dates)

  • Free of charge pickup.
  • Funky Tours provides all tour transfers.
  • Blagaj Dervis House entrance fee included: 5 EUR per person
  • Kravice Waterfalls entrance fee included: 10 EUR per person
  • Why do we include a visit to the Bosnaseum museum in this tour? The inclusion of the Bosnaseum Museum in our Mostar and Herzegovina Tour is strategic for several reasons. The museum provides an opportunity to watch a concise documentary about this significant event in a comfortable, air-conditioned setting. Additionally, the museum’s well-maintained restrooms offer a welcome respite for guests, especially during the hot summer months when temperatures in Mostar often exceed 40 degrees Celsius. This thoughtful addition ensures both educational and physical comfort for our guests.

  • Pay safely online with a credit card. We accept payments for all types of credit cards.

Meet & Greet

Meet our team at the office or your preferred pickup location. Your guide will help you experience all cultural, historical, natural diversity of Herzegovina most beautiful cities and will make sure no questions remain unanswered, even of personal nature, so don’t refrain from sharing your thoughts and opinions at any moment of time.

The morning ride will take us through the interesting suburbs of Sarajevo and areas of central Bosnia until we pass Ivan Mountain and enter the Herzegovina region. As soon as we are in Herzegovina, we’ll start descending, as a region of Herzegovina is generally on lower altitudes and has a totally different climate, so you’ll notice dramatic natural environment change.

The day’s first stop is a short visit to the old part of Konjic town. Unique, prehistorically inhabited, famous for the 17th century 6-arch Old Bridge, looming over the turquoise Neretva River, usually a very sunny place, is the day’s perfect start. Standing on WW2’s last day, during the Nazi withdrawal and destroyed bridge, we learn the story of the “monument to human stupidity”, the mystery of Tito’s Bunker, the famousness of white water rafting at upper Neretva region and glacier Boracko Lake, and the few other stories before we continue our way.

reasons to visit sarajevo

The ride continues by passing the large, dammed but very beautiful Jablaničko lake, with a short stop at Jablanica where we will cross the river, walking just next to the remains of the old bridge and learn the WW2 story of the “Neretva Battle” .

When in Jablanica, the story of the famous roasted lamb on the spit is an absolute must, so we will make sure to “sniff” into the way this greatest delicacy is prepared.

Views of Jablaničko Lake and Prenj mountain regions are breathtaking and will make you wanna stop and breathe those in.

  • Jablaničko Lake and Neretva River Canyon (possible shortstop for amazing photos)

Sarajevo War Tunnel was dug in July 1993 and used to be main supply route to Sarajevo during the Siege

Kravica Waterfall

Some 40 km from Mostar and around 20 km from Pocitelj, Trebižat River plummets in a 28 m-high arc, creating a mesmerizing natural and 120-meter-wide water amphitheater known as Kravice Waterfall. These captivating waterfalls trapped in lush greenery are a perfect setting for everyone looking for an escape into intact nature.

For those of you who are into swimming and pedaling or simply enjoying one of the most photogenic Disney-like settings, which have its charm no matter the season of the year you are visiting, Kravica Waterfall is an absolute must additional stop.

Kravice Waterfalls on Trebizat river

Počitelj Town

Then we continue through some really amazing parts of the Neretva River canyon, telling the unique stories of Herzegovina before we arrive at our second stop – Počitelj.

Stunningly nested above the Neretva river, visit to Počitelj (“Počivati” – Bos.”to rest in peace”), easy uphill, one-hour-long walking activity, accompanied with stories of the town’s development and strategic importance during its 600+ year-long written history and visit to most important sites such as Hajji Alija Mosque, Clock Tower and Gavrankapetanovic tower, IS A MUST, for anyone passing through or near Herzegovina region.

Unique, medieval, Ottoman era glorified, present-day Ottoman-Mediterranean style designed fortress – town Počitelj is one of the very few urban ensembles in Bosnia and Herzegovina preserved in their integrity to the present times.

In the end of the walk we take some time for locally grown fresh lemonade or Bosnian coffee if you prefer 🙂

Sarajevo Cable Car

Blagaj Dervish House, Buna River Spring & Lunch Break

After Počitelj, our next stop is Blagaj.

Blagaj town is home to Buna River Spring – Europe’s most beautiful, powerful, clean, and drinkable karst river spring, settled beneath a rock a few hundred meters high. Water comes out of quite a large but stunningly deep cave, which springs an amazing 43 cubic meters of water per second. Can you imagine this?

Just next to the spring, under the rock, is home to Blagaj Tekke – Dervish house, dating most likely pre or early Ottoman era from the early 16th century, a unique sacral-residential example of Islamic architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Visiting this complex and learning more about Dervish life in Herzegovina as an important part of our history is a MUST DO.

For Muslim travelers, “Tekija” is a place where prayers are hosted 5 times a day and can be attended if wanted.

As we finished our visit to “Blagajska Tekija” and “Izvor rijeke Bune,” we stayed there for a bit longer. It is time for lunch. Due to the famousness and cleanliness of Buna river, the most important thing to taste in Blagaj today is local trout. That is why we don’t leave the place before we offer our guests to try locally prepared trout on “Blagaj Way”, enjoying the amazing scenery of Buna River spring and Dervish House next to it. Vegetarians, don’t worry, we have solutions for you as well 🙂 Lunch is not included in the price, so plan an extra 10 to 12 EUR for the lunch.

Sarajevo Olympic Bobsled Track at Trebevic Mountain

Only 15 minutes further, it is time for the Mostar experience, which is the most important jewel on our “Herzegovina Necklace” day trip.

As soon as we arrive in Mostar, we start our walking tour, which will cover the most important sites and locations in Mostar.

We focus on Mostar’s Old Bridge, Old Bazaar, and Old Town but offer stories of Mostar’s uniqueness in regard to historical and cultural diversity.

The story of Mostar will be about the Bridge, its rise and fall, and how it rose again. You will learn about the Siege of Mostar, about why it is called Mostar, and about “Mostarians.” We recreate Mostar for you and with you.

In Mostar, if preferred, we give our guests free time to explore on their own as we simply do not like to “hold a candle all the way”.

Sunsets are an amazing time in Mostar, so we’ll have a drink at a place overlooking the bridge panorama and discuss more about everything we did today.

When Mostar is done, it is time to return to Sarajevo, and it will take us around two hours before we are “home”.

The reason why, during this day tour, we prefer to arrive at Mostar around 3 or 4 pm and then explore Mostar is because in the afternoon, most of the day tours and big groups passing through Mostar are already gone, so we get to have Mostar for ourselves for the maximized experience.

On the way back, we can make another break for those desiring to try the famous roasted lamb at Jablanica. We expect to be in Sarajevo around 7 pm, so better don’t plan too many things that evening as days can be quite long some time.

Excellent..exceptional

I have lot to say about this tour and Funky tour team. I was booked this tour on 04/aug/23 for 5 th august 2023 how ever due to my mistake during booking i choosed date for Oct 2023 .on 5th of august i was waiting for thir call at my Hostel Sarajevo,i just bit more anxious about pick up so i just call there number and one lady responed and they asked about tour confimation i repled to her without knowing about this mistake i have made.but she arraged my pickup and tour started as agreed.

Afer scutnize during the tour funky team told me about this then only i realized about this date change but they well organized my tour with out any argument it was exceptional. We are 3 on that day other 2 are from USA.

Our guide was really cool ( i forgot his name actually) he well explained about Bosnia and Herzegovinas history and culture he well trined and knowlegable person. Only thing i was booked tour including Kravince fall, but due this mistake i was not able to visit during this trip my bad luck.how ever funky tour was refunded that extra amount to me i strongly recommend funky team to every one bcz not only about tour also thire cutumer service was excellent.

Fun and educational trip with amazing guide!

He had so much knowledge about Bosnia and Herzegovina and really made our day! It was a small group of 5 with two couples and our guide. We visited some amazing places, had a lovely Bosnian coffee and lunch later on and learned so much about history and architecture.

We could really tell Amel loves his country but also likes to learn about other cultures.

Unmissable. See so much in day.

A fascinating trip especially as I had not realised how much Bosnia had to offer. Stefan and our expert driver Lamija opened our eyes to parts of this stunning and diverse country. The journey was comfortable and captivating as they drove and showed us around. Both were lovely, professional and knowledgable. I felt I saw so much in a day that wouldn’t otherwise have been possible without Funky Tours.

All that is funky–and then some.

As I researched possible tours of the Balkans, I wanted to avoid large groups travelling by coach. I also wanted an itinerary that would balance exploration of nature, culture, and history. Funky Tours looked especially promising.

After recently completing my tour, I am happy to say that Funky Tours far exceeded my high expectations.

Emir was our expert guide and driver, but he was also so much more. He shared his wide and deep knowledge of the region and its history, vivid anecdotes from personal experience, and a delightful sense of humor.

I admired his candor and thoughtfulness in addressing difficult, sometimes political questions, and marveled at his resourcefulness as a troubleshooter who nimbly addressed any and all issues throughout the trip.

Our itinerary was rich and fascinating, often taking us off the beaten track for immersion experiences that helped burst the tourist bubble. I should add that the tour struck a fine balance between comfort and physical activity. Hotel accommodations were excellent, the van was comfortable, and meals provided by the tour were tasty.

At the same time, I enjoyed our walking tours and light hiking in beautiful natural surroundings. Funky Tours also wisely combines structured days with plenty of free time for exploration. As much as I recommend Emir, I have no doubt that everyone at Funky Tours is a capable professional. Just keep in mind that whatever your associations with “funky”, mine are fun, informative, mind-expanding, and first rate.

A Great experience

I spent a week in Sarajevo and did 4 tours total with this company. What a great decision that turned out to be. It was an excellent way to learn about the culture and history of Bosnia and to venture out into the countryside.

Guides were top notch, friendly, informative and genuinely interested in sharing their country with visitors.

The Total Siege tour with Almir was special, an experience I won’t forget.

The office staff who managed the scheduling were also great. Special thanks to Edna for her kind assistance.

Highlights of Mostar Day Trip

If you are dreaming of visiting the Kravice Waterfalls, Mostar, Konjic, Pocitelj, and Blagaj , this tour is your best option!

I really enjoy how easy it was to see all the top tourist attractions and highlights of Bosnia & Herzegovina in just one day!

Your guided tour is a full day, with a duration of around 10 to 11 hours, starting from the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo.

day trips sarajevo

The tour starts out by meeting at 8:00 am at the Meet Bosnia Travel Agency where you will meet your expert tour guide. Then it’s off for a 30-minute stop at the Konjic Bridge.

🎟️ TICKETS: Grab Tickets To This Tour!

Stop 1: Konjic Bridge

Your first stop of the day is Konjic Bridge, the old stone bridge from the Turkish period that has connected the banks of the Neretva River since 1682!

After a 30-minute quick visit to Konjic Bridge, it’s then off to Kravice Falls!

Stop 2: Kravice Waterfalls

Kravice waterfalls

If you love nature as much as I do, you will really love the second stop on this ultimate day trip tour to Mostar from Sarajevo!

Kravice waterfalls are located in the Trebizat River and have some of the most stunning waterfalls I’ve ever seen.

Surrounded by the lush green riverside forest the river’s crystal clear water is perfect for swimming. You will enjoy an hour at the beautiful waterfalls and can go swimming if you are feeling inclined to do so.

I had a swim and it was one of the best things I did on this tour!

Stop 3: Urban Site of Pocitelj

The fortified town of Pocitelj dates back to the 14th century. It is like an open-air museum of famous landmarks and Ottoman-style architecture.

You will explore this great place for around 20 minutes before heading to the next stop.

Stop 4: Blagaj Tekija

Blagaj Tekija

Blagaj Tekija (Blagaj Tekke) is one of those places you need to see to believe. I feel my pictures don’t do it justice!

Sitting at the mouth of the Buna River is the Dervish Monastery. Nestled in the lush countryside of Herzegovina, this monastery offers visitors some of the most stunning views.

Blagaj Tekija is offered referred to as “the pearl of Herzegovina”, and see this Dervish House for yourself, you will see why.

This is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited, and I don’t think I would have visited without this day trip tour to Mostar from Sarajevo.

Stop 5: Sniper Tower (Pass By)

You will pass by the Sniper Tower just outside Mostar. It is a stark reminder of Bosnia’s bloody civil war in the 1990s. Located high atop a hill overlooking the city, it was used by Serb snipers as a vantage point to target Bosnian civilians during the conflict.

The tower itself stands as a testament to the brutality of Bosnia’s ethnic cleansing campaign and the horror of war. Also, an important reminder of Bosnia’s history serving as a powerful symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.

Today, it has become a popular tourist destination for those looking to pay their respects and gain insight into Bosnia’s past.

Stop 6: Stari Most (Old Bridge) & The Old Town Tour

Stari Most Bridge in Mostar

One of the highlights of the tour for me was finally arriving at Stari Most, the famous old bridge with the Game of Thrones vibes. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.

The 16th-century Ottoman bridge stands as a symbol of international peace. The bridge was destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993 but was rebuilt between 2001-2004 with the help of UNESCO and local citizens.

The sturdy arch of the Stari Most is a testament to Bosnia’s resilience and the power of international cooperation. The bridge has become a symbol of reconciliation, with visitors from all over the world coming to witness its beauty.

It is also home to an annual diving competition, where divers compete in traditional costumes while leaping from the edge of the bridge into the Neretva River below. Crossing the bridge you will enjoy beautiful views of Mostar’s old town.

There are some interesting facts about Stari Most that many people don’t know.

  • The famous bridge doesn’t have a foundation.
  • The designed of the bridge was a student of Mimar Sinan, the most skilled architect of the Ottoman Empire
  • The bridge has entirely been reconstructed due to the destruction of the Bosnian war in 1993
  • Jumping off the bridge is not just a daredevil game, but a competitive sport
  • It’s a bridge with no foundation, one of the most uniquely designed in the world.

Stop 7: Koski-Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque

Koski-Mehmed Pasha's Mosque

With your local tour guide, you will make a short visit and have some free time to explore this imperial Mosque built around 1618. It was nearly fully reconstructed after the Bosnia war but stands today in all its glory.

This 16th-century Mosque is one of the top attractions in Mostar and the most monumental Mosque in the region.

Here also lies the famous fountain of Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque.

You will pass by the first Hamam built during the Ottoman Empire and the Crooked Bridge which is a small bridge version of the famous Stari Most.

Stop 8: Old Bazar Kujundziluk

Finish the tour at the old bazaar. It is the perfect spot to check out souvenir shops and buy local products. You can also use this free time to get more pictures of the old bridge area.

Is Mostar Worth Visiting?

day trips sarajevo

Yes, Mostar is absolutely worth visiting, and a real hidden gem in Eastern Europe ! The city of Mostar is beautiful and filled with so many historical sites and cultural attractions! Wait till you see the famous old bridge that looks like something out of Game of Thrones.

You will find delicious cuisine from the best local restaurants and stunning architecture that gives the city of Mostar its unique character.

Mostar is a small town though, so you don’t need more than a couple of days proper. With its close proximity to Sarajevo, it is the perfect day trip.

Although you could take a bus there by yourself, I encourage you to take a day tour! A tour is one of the best ways to experience a place like Mostar and all its history.

🚗 Renting a car on this trip ? Get the best prices with Discover Cars!

The Distance From Sarajevo to Mostar

The distance between these two cities is only about 80 km, so it doesn’t take more than an hour and a half driving, in most cases.

If you do rent a car, you will need to be an excellent driver to navigate the roads to Mostar. They can be a bit challenging if you aren’t strong behind the wheel.

With a short distance from Sarajevo to Mostar it makes for the perfect place to make a day trip.

If you aren’t renting a car , joining a tour to visit Mostar is also the most efficient. Taking the train or bus to Mostar is on average, a 3-hour journey each way. Public transit is doable, just less ideal.

There is a bus station just a little outside Sarajevo city center that you can take to Mostar. For the Mostar train, get the timetable here . Keep in my that English isn’t widely spoken, so it’s another reason visiting via tour is the best choice!

The best way to see Mostar from Sarajevo is a day tour from Meet Bosnia Travel .

Final Thoughts on my day trip tour to Mostar from Sarajevo

This day trip was the best money I spent on my vacation to the Balkans! Even if you are someone who likes to go at their own pace I would still urge you to consider doing a day trip.

You will see so much and learn so much in this full-day tour you can’t compare it to being out there on your own.

I also recommend doing a walking tour of the historic part of Sarajevo. Getting a tour of the city from a local guide really can enhance your experience.

I opted to explore the historical museums on my own. But when it comes to learning about the Srebrenica massacre and Srebrenica genocide I’d rather have an official Sarajevo tour.

Bosnia & Herzegovina has so much to offer, I am really glad I joined this tour!
