Following the huge success of their NETFLIX biopic THE DIRT, Mötley Crüe has seen a massive surge in new audience with fans around the world demanding the band tour again. This led to the band members reuniting and announcing that “Mötley Crüe is back” in 2019. While The Dirt caused a meteoric 350% increase in streams of Mötley Crüe’s music across all platforms and the younger 18-44 demographic now represents 64% of the band’s fanbase most of the new fans have never seen any of the band’s legendary live shows that Crüeheads have relished for 4 decades. In 2021, Mötley Crüe celebrated their 40th band anniversary, as well as the 40th birthday of their iconic debut album, TOO FAST FOR LOVE. The 35th anniversary of their GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS hit album is coming up on May 15. Mötley Crüe have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, achieving 7 platinum and multi-platinum albums, 9 Top 10 albums, 22 Top 40 Mainstream Rock hits, 6 Top 20 Pop singles and 3 GRAMMY nominations. The band have amassed close to 5 billion streams across digital platforms. They have over 15 million social media followers, a New York Times best-seller and a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. The band is ready to deliver an over the top stage show packed full of hit songs.

“It’s on!  We don’t think we’ve ever looked forward more to kicking off a tour than this one. We can’t wait to finally see all the fans across North America again. Get ready for a wild ride this summer!” Mötley Crüe said in a joint statement.

ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Def Leppard are one of the most important forces in rock music. In 2019, the icons closed out a sold-out worldwide tour including a North American stadium run & headlining the UK’s Download Festival to 90k screaming fans. Def Leppard’s star continues to rise and prevail. The band have amassed a staggering 5.5 billion streams since 2018, reaching a younger 18-44 demographic that now represents 58% of their fanbase. Additionally, the band have garnered an impressive 15 million followers across their social media platforms. Def Leppard also celebrates the landmark 45 th anniversary of their formation this year, marking 45 years of legendary rock ‘n’ roll history making. Def Leppard’s influential career crosses generations and includes 110 million records sold, numerous hit singles and ground-breaking multi-platinum albums—including two of the best-selling albums of all time, Pyromania and Hysteria, both of which are certified Diamond (10x platinum).

“On behalf of the band, we’re beyond thrilled that the stadium tour is finally happening this summer … it’s been a while coming and we can’t wait to get back on stage again & we can’t wait to see you in one of the many stadiums soon!” said Joe Elliott.

POISON will be bringing a rocking real and relevant no holds barred thunderous live show to the Stadium tour this summer with the all original lineup of Bret Michaels, C.C. DeVille, Bobby Dall and Rikki Rockett. POISON will be unleashing an onslaught of hit after hit songs in its set. The humanitarian of the year, two years running, Michaels along with POISON is known to bring a unique style of passionate high energy, sincere gratitude and a positive attitude.  Michaels engages all the fans and makes it an absolute epic ride of true live music. Together With C.C.Deville on guitar, Bobby Dall on bass, and Rikki Rockett on drums POISON will rock the stadium with a chemistry that will bring a big summer mega party vibe and Michaels promises to give 1000 % on the stage as the hotter it gets the harder POISON promises to rock!!!

Poison’s Bret Michaels also added: “There are not enough words to thank the three generations of fans for making this such an exciting, record breaking, historical tour with the fastest sell outs in history at these stadiums.”

Joan Jett grew up during a time when rock ‘n’ roll was off limits to girls and women, but as a teenager, she promptly blew the door to the boys’ club right off its hinges. After forming her band the Blackhearts in 1979, with whom Jett has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” With a career that has spanned music, film, television, Broadway, and humanitarianism, Joan Jett remains a potent force and inspiration to generations of fans worldwide. As a producer, she has overseen seminal albums by Bikini Kill, and the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece ‘GI.’ Jett and Kenny Laguna (her longtime producer and music partner) co-founded Blackheart Records from the trunk of Kenny’s Cadillac after rejections from no less than 23 labels. 40 years later, Blackheart is a thriving entertainment company producing music, film and television, and continues to champion emerging bands. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts continue touring the globe with headlining shows alongside fellow rock legends like The Who, Green Day, Heart, and Foo Fighters. After two COVID-19 postponements, the group will return to the road in summer 2022 for The Stadium Tour with Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Poison. ‘Bad Reputation,’ a documentary about Jett’s life, premiered to critical acclaim at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is now available for streaming.

“We are so excited to be back out on the road! We missed doing what we love most and can’t wait to see the fans out there again!” said Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Emerging rock band Classless Act, signed to Better Noise Music, is set to open the tour. With the release of their single “Give It To Me” in 2021, the band has already received critical praise from the likes of rock media including SPIN, Loudwire, and more. Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee was an early follower of the band and is excited to have them join him and his bandmates on the road, saying, “I remember when we went out with Ozzy in 1984 and how it was an insane game changer!! We literally blew up after having that opportunity to play live in front of 20,000 people every f***ing night! Since then, we’ve always felt it was important to help new bands; whether it was Guns N Roses, Skid Row or so many others.  This summer we’re gonna help out Classless Act.”

Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard announce rescheduled 2022 North American stadium tour with Poison, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

The long-delayed trek will take the four hard rock giants across North America from mid-June through early September

(from left) Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe perform at at Madison Square Garden on October 28, 2014 in New York City

All the way back in 2019, Mötley Crüe announced that they would be hitting the road – for the first time since their 2015 "farewell" tour – in the summer of 2020 for a co-headlining stadium tour with Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.

Of course, COVID-19 put those plans on hold, first to 2021, and then again to 2022. Now though, the tour's schedule has finally been set in stone, with a few new dates to boot.

Set to begin on June 16 at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, the tour will take the '80s rock giants across North America before ending on September 9   at   Allegiant Stadium   in Las Vegas.

"It's on! We don't think we've ever looked forward more to kicking off a tour than this one," Mötley Crüe said in a joint statement. "We can't wait to finally see all the fans across North America again. Get ready for a wild ride this summer!"

“On behalf of the band, we’re beyond thrilled that the stadium tour is finally happening this summer," added Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott. "It’s been a while coming and we can’t wait to get back on stage again, and we can’t wait to see you in one of the many stadiums soon."

Mötley Crüe played what was billed as their final show ever on December 31, 2015 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but reunited in the studio in 2019 to record four new songs for the soundtrack to The Dirt , a biopic about the band that was released on Netflix that same year.

After months of rumors, the band confirmed that they would return to the stage in November 2019, announcing the full end of their breakup in typically colorful fashion – with a video of the band destroying the 'cessation of touring' contract they had signed just a few years before.

After a two-year COVID delay, Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard kicked off their Stadium Tour last night at the Truist Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The legacy rockers are switching off headlining spots nightly, and for the kickoff, Crüe hit the stage at 7:35PM, with Def Leppard closing from 9:55 until 11:30PM.

Crüe's last documented show was December 30, 2015 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles - see that setlist here . The band famously signed a contract to stop touring in 2014, and then blew it up in 2019.

MC opened their 16-song setlist with "Wild Side" - and there's fan footage. Check it:

Drummer Tommy Lee played for five songs then tapped in Ozzy drummer Tommy Clufetos for "Live Wire" and the remainder of the set, except for a reappearance during "Home Sweet Home." Lee told the audience he had broken four ribs a couple weeks before the tour started.

Machine Gun Kelly, who played Lee in the 2019 Motley Crue biopic The Dirt , joined the band on stage for... you guessed it, "The Dirt (Est 1981)." (Note: MGK's own tour Mainstream Sellout, is hitting Atlanta tonight ).

A rarity that made its way into the set was "Piece of Your Action" which hadn't been performed since 2013 - and is also on The Dirt soundtrack. See the complete setlist from opening night:

Def Leppard hit the stage at 9:55PM, kicking off their 18-song setlist with 2022 single, "Take What What You Want" followed by the first of two live debuts of the evening, "Fire It Up." Take a look:

The band released their 12th studio album, Diamond Star Halos , just last month and put on an intimate show at the Whisky a Go Go to celebrate. See that setlist here . The second live debut of the night, "This Guitar" arrived mid-set, followed by an acoustic rendition of "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad" and Joe Elliot performing "Two Steps Behind" solo. For added effect, it was raining during their set. Watch:

Setlists – Stadium Tour Kickoff With Motley Crue, Def Leppard + Poison

Motley Crue  and  Def Leppard  kicked off the " Stadium Tour " with  Poison ,  Joan Jett  and Classless Act  on Thursday (June 16) in Atlanta. Tickets for the upcoming shows are on sale here , and the bands' setlists from the first concert are now available — see below.

The Stadium Tour,  announced in 2019  by Motley Crue and Def Leppard, was initially to take place in 2020. It was moved to 2021 after COVID-19 emerged, and again to this year because of the pandemic .

Now, however, the tour's rockin' along, but Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee  was  replaced partway through their set due to an injury he sustained prior to the tour's start. With four broken ribs, he powered through five songs before being replaced by Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Clufetos . Lee insists he'll play as many songs as he can each night before relinquishing the kit to Clufetos as the tour continues.

See the setlists for Def Leppard (who closed out the night), Motley Crue and Poison below.

It's currently unknown how much the sets will change as the tour continues across America. But fans can peruse each act's songs from opening night. Are any missing that you want to hear on the Stadium Tour?

Last year, Crue singer Vince Neil   returned to performing  after falling and breaking bones  at a solo show. The L.A. glam icons reportedly  sold the rights to their song catalog for $150 million around the same time. Their latest material is four recordings they contributed to the soundtrack  of their 2019 biopic .

This month, Def Leppard announced  signature gin and issued a mobile matching game for iOS and Android called  Def Leppard - Let's Rock It!  Last month, the English hard rockers released Diamond Star Halos , the first Def Leppard studio album since 2015 .

See the rest of the tour dates here .

Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard Kick Off Long-Awaited “Stadium Tour”: Video + Setlists

The Atlanta concert also featured sets from support acts Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard Kick Off Long-Awaited “Stadium Tour”: Video + Setlists

After a two-year delay due to the pandemic, Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard finally kicked off their long-awaited North American co-headlining “Stadium Tour” on Thursday night (June 16th) at Truist Park in Atlanta. Support acts Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts also highlighted the legendary bill.

The extensive tour runs through a September 9th show in Las Vegas, spanning 36 dates, with tickets available here .

As we reported in the minutes after Mötley Crüe’s performance, Tommy Lee had to bow out of the band’s set after five songs due to broken ribs he suffered two weeks prior to the show. Lee addressed the crowd, explaining that he was already performing against doctors’ orders, before handing off drumming duties to Ozzy Osbourne stickman Tommy Clufetos, who was standing by and completed the last 11 songs of the Crüe’s set.

Lee did return briefly later in the set to play piano on “Home Sweet Home,” and at one point in the evening, tweeted that Clufetos “is here to help me out until I’m back at 100%,” implying that Clufetos would be around for the band’s upcoming shows, as well.

Aside from Lee’s injury surprise, Mötley Crüe played a 16-song career-spanning set that kicked off with early single “Live Wire” and wrapped up with the massive hit “Kickstart My Heart.” Machine Gun Kelly, who played Lee in the Netflix movie The Dirt , jumped onstage with the band to perform “The Dirt (est. 1981)” from the film’s soundtrack.

The Atlanta show marked Mötley Crüe’s first concert since December 31st, 2015, which was meant to wrap up their last tour ever after the band signed a “cessation of touring” agreement. However, they announced in late 2019 that they’d be reuniting for a 2020 tour after the success of the movie, but then had to wait two more years to finally hit the road again.

Def Leppard closed out the night as rain poured down on the stadium, performing after Mötley Crüe, and delivered an 18-song set that was heavy on their multiplatinum album Hysteria , which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers played seven songs off the 1987 LP, including classics like “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Animal,” and “Love Bites.

The UK rockers also showcased their new release, Diamond Star Halos , by performing four songs off the album, while 1983’s Pyromania also got some love with “Foolin’,” “Photograph,” and “Rock of Ages.”

Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett Tour Opener Photos

Def Leppard , Motley Crue , Poison and Joan Jett kicked off their long-delayed Stadium Tour Thursday on an extremely hot day in Atlanta.

You can see exclusive photos from the concert below.

The tour launched almost exactly two years after its original planned July 2020 start date after pandemic-related delays. Both headliners successfully overcame significant obstacles on opening night.

Five songs into Motley Crue's set , drummer Tommy Lee told the crowd he had broken four ribs two weeks earlier, and would not be able to perform the rest of the night. He was ably replaced for the rest of the band's crowd-pleasing set by Tommy Clufetos, best known for his recent work with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath .

A strong and extended downpour hit Truist Park right as Def Leppard took the stage, sending many fans scrambling for shelter inside the ballpark. But the band powered through with an impressive set featuring four songs from their new album Diamond Star Halos alongside hits such as "Rock of Ages" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

Performing their first show together in almost four years, Poison quickly got the crowd in the palm of their hand and never let go during a breakneck hour-long tour through their most popular songs.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts further energized the crowd after an energetic and well-received opening blast from Classless Act, offering a powerful set highlighted by hit covers such as "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and "Crimson and Clover." They capped it all off with a performance of "I Hate Myself for Loving You" that got the crowd extremely amped up.

The Motley Crue / Def Leppard / Poison / Joan Jett Stadium Tour is currently scheduled to conclude Sept. 9 in Las Vegas.

Though a majority of their long-maned peers have long been reduced to playing county fairs and tiny clubs, both bands managed to outlast time and transcend criticism en route to co-headlining one of the year’s biggest tours. That each group arrived with a wheelbarrow of recognizable songs and pop-culture credibility didn’t hurt. Nor did the crowd’s willingness to indulge in nostalgia — or wait in long lines to snag the sorts of T-shirts that doubled as a uniform at high schools around the country during Ronald Reagan’s second term.

Dovetailing with current fashion, as well as interest in retro shows like Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” the appetite for MTV-heyday rock is robust. Originally scheduled for summer 2020 and postponed by the pandemic, the 36-date Stadium Tour — which also includes Poison and Joan Jett — has already sold more than 1.1 million tickets. The timing delay actually worked in favor of Def Leppard. The British veterans, the most studio-active band on the bill, in May released their first new album (“Diamond Star Halos”) in nearly seven years. To its credit, Def Leppard devoted nearly a quarter of its 90-minute set to recent material.

Lead singer Vince Neil of Motley Crue introduces the band's backup singers during the Stadium Tour at Wrigley Field July 8, 2022.

Career opportunists, Mötley Crüe last released a new record 14 years ago. But the Los Angeles rockers agreed to reunite and return to the road after their “The Dirt” autobiography — originally published in 2001 — was turned into a 2019 Netflix film. Doing so compelled the quartet to break its so-called “Cessation of Touring Agreement” it signed in advance of its alleged retirement and final show in 2015. As it turns out, ’80s music has more staying power than a legal contract.

In retrospect, perhaps Mötley Crüe should have reconsidered. Understandably, the four original members who took the stage in the wake of an exaggerated intro punctuated by throat-choking clouds of sulfurous smoke no longer resemble their youthful bad-boy selves. But time has also taken a harsh toll on the band’s abilities. Ironically, the oldest member, guitarist Mick Mars, seems to have changed the least. Thin, pale, and quiet, he still resembles a vampire that just awoke in a coffin. Primarily sticking to the shadows, Mars executed his parts with a competency that frequently served as the glue that held tunes together.

If anything, his instrumentalist cohorts, drummer Tommy Lee and bassist Nikki Sixx, overplayed. The duo repeatedly generated a muddy, bass-dominant rumble that devoured the contours of songs and saturated the mix with an indistinct sameness. They slowed down several well-known songs, including a deflated “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)” and dulled “Looks That Kill.” And they suffocated the sass, sleaze and sway out of music that once threatened to give bystanders a transmissible disease if they got too close. Mötley Crüe’s bash-and-crash approach also functioned as a camouflage for Vince Neil’s screeching vocals, which have seen much better days.

Guitarist C.C. DeVille performs with Poison during the Stadium Tour at Wrigley Field, a tour that also includes Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Watching Neil trudge around was almost as uncomfortable as listening to him try to sing. During verses, he often failed to project over the din of his mates. Or he simply gave up, choosing to hold the microphone stand away from his mouth and toward the audience. Unable or unwilling to break from a tedious walking gait, he lacked enthusiasm in the same ways Mötley Crüe hurt for chemistry. For Neil, the 80-minute set amounted to a chore, a task to get through rather than a chance to entertain. His out-of-tune vocals on favorites such as “Home Sweet Home” and tendency to duck backstage for breaks couldn’t help but raise questions.

Indeed, the few bursts of energy came not from Neil or the now-tame Sixx but three female backing vocalists/dancers that did the heavy lifting on many choruses. Dubbed “The Nasty Habits,” the trio — like most of Mötley Crüe’s hedonistic fare — defied any notions of the #MeToo era. As they slithered around in revealing outfits and struck provocative poses, they provided an enormous boost to the band. Their presence further underscored how other glitzy trappings — hydraulic towers, pyrotechnics, lasers, fog and an ill-advised rendition of “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” that ultimately stood as a crass advertisement for the band’s Netflix movie — aimed to distract.

Along with Mars’ greasy riffs, the trio largely carried “Dr. Feelgood” and “Girls, Girls, Girls.” But nothing masked the fact that the band demanded fans fill in too many blanks with memories.

Def Leppard performs during the Stadium Tour at Wrigley Field Friday in Chicago.

Def Leppard opted for a different strategy. Afforded a huge stage, the quintet — whose ranks count three original members plus two guitarists, Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell, who have been in the band for decades — kept it simple. Save for a backdrop wall of tall screens, extended drum-riser platform and fancy lighting, Def Leppard skipped the frills and focused on music. Though aware its largest successes belong to the past, it sounded and acted like a band that still enjoys playing together. What it lacked in showiness and toughness it made up for with balance, control, sharpness and fun.

Not surprisingly, the group leaned heavily on material from its blockbuster “Hysteria” LP, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. Rather than go through the motions, singer Joe Elliott and company addressed the songs like anthems deserve to be treated — with chords that rang out for miles, rousing lead vocals, driving harmonies, tight rhythms and clean, vibrant sonics.

Owing as much to pop as any genre, and not shy about flaunting its way with catchy melodies, sparkling tones and slick beats, Def Leppard navigated the sensual curves of “Animal” with the same prowess it handled the cinematic drama on “Love Bites.” The group paid homage to artistic influences and simulated launch-countdown sequences on “Rocket” before cooling down to channel a mix of anticipation, anxiety and lust on “Hysteria.” Propelled by a meaty riff and insistent groove, “Armageddon It” used question-and-answer exchanges to extend an invitation to dance.

Lead singer Joe Elliott of Def Leppard performs during the Stadium Tour at Wrigley Field.

Albeit minor, Def Leppard’s sole misstep owed to mid-concert pacing. Gathered nearer to the crowd at center stage for a semi-unplugged mini-set anchored by the sappy “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad,” the band stunted its momentum and gave people excuses to run to restrooms. A handful of new tunes — the singalong “Kick,” bleacher-stomping “Fire It Up,” glam-fueled “Take What You Want” — fared better and fit with the group’s glossy pop-rock mold. Tellingly, the “Diamond Star Halos” selections were the only post-1993 songs Def Leppard played.

Thankfully, the group acknowledged its New Wave of British Heavy Metal roots with an inspired version of the 1981 power ballad “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” and segue into the instrumental “Switch 625,” culminated by a short solo by drummer Rick Allen. The one-armed percussionist also found himself at the center of the action during the booming “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” Receiving its proper due in a setting in which it helped make possible for live music to thrive — a stadium — the double entendre-laden staple felt as massive as it originally did in 1987. And that’s no f-f-foolin.’

After forming her band the Blackhearts in 1979, with whom Jett has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics "Bad Reputation," "I Love Rock 'N' Roll," "I Hate Myself For Loving You," and "Crimson and Clover." With a career that has spanned music, film, television, Broadway, and humanitarianism, Joan Jett remains a potent force and inspiration to generations of fans worldwide. As a producer, she has overseen seminal albums by Bikini Kill, and the Germs' LA punk masterpiece ‘GI.’ Jett and Kenny Laguna (her longtime producer and music partner) co-founded Blackheart Records from the trunk of Kenny’s Cadillac after rejections from no less than 23 labels. 'Bad Reputation,' a documentary about Jett's life, premiered to critical acclaim at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is now available for streaming.

Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee was an early follower of the band and is excited to have them join him and his bandmates on the road, saying,  "I remember when we went out with Ozzy in 1984 and how it was an insane game changer!! We literally blew up after having that opportunity to play live in front of 20,000 people every f***ing night! Since then, we’ve always felt it was important to help new bands; whether it was Guns N Roses, Skid Row or so many others. This summer we’re gonna help out Classless Act."

Music + concerts, music + concerts | mötley crüe, def leppard and poison travel down memory lane at sofi stadium, during the inglewood stadium tour stop on saturday, mötley crüe was awful, def leppard was triumphant, poison was joyous, joan jett was legendary and classless act was ascendant..

def leppard motley crue tour 2022

The Stadium Tour, featuring Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Poison, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Classless Act, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Saturday was a bittersweet trip down memory lane, filled with could-have-been-me flashback fantasies and when-rock-was-real overwrought hand-wringing.

I clearly wasn’t alone in longing for the good old days. It was definitely AARP night at SoFi Stadium with fans in line waiting to get into the show talking about the excitement of becoming a grandparent. Gray hair replaced the big hair of the ’80s and those who insisted on wearing skin tight attire bulged in all the wrong places. The bands also played their parts — decked out in the leather, glitter and tattoos that defined the glam metal era.

But this tour, which has played across baseball and football stadiums this summer, was also a multi-generational affair with father-son, mother-daughter and father-daughter duos spotted taking selfies together.

On this particular night, Mötley Crüe was awful. There was no comparison between the two-coheadliners. Def Leppard delivered a rock show for the ages and Mötley Crüe’s performance indicated that they’d be better off in a retirement home sweet home. Meanwhile, Poison was joyous, Joan Jett was legendary and opening band Classless Act was ascendant.

Mötley Crüe

What went wrong with this set? Tommy Lee’s bass drum was nauseously loud — to the point of drowning out everything else. Vince Neil, who was always a better frontman than singer, somehow failed on both fronts — wavering between disinterest and disdain. The performance was lifeless, plodding and ridiculously loud. The duct-taped-together band seemed to be going through its paces in hopes of making it through the evening.

“Who likes the old (expletive)?” Neil said introducing “Too Fast For Love.” “We’ll do something really (expletive) old.”

The band seemed to be overcompensating on several fronts in a desperate attempt to disguise a multitude of shortcomings and sins. The limber and gyrating backup singers/dancers/strippers felt like a grasp at long-faded youth. The fun, irreverent and rollicking “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)” was none of those things — with the band barely seeming to be playing the same song. The swaggering “Looks That Kill” that should have been an easy layup for the band was a struggle. Neil seemed to be unfamiliar with the lyrics of songs he’s sung for decades — which, to be fair, was the case in the ‘80s as well.

The biggest cheer from the crowd came from the younger generation, who had tagged along with their parents, when Machine Gun Kelly appeared on the video screen to sing a recorded verse from “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” from the Netflix movie soundtrack.

Things only got worse from there. A medley of covers from the band’s early days felt like filler. “Dr. Feelgood” was a nearly unrecognizable wall of noise. The highlight of the set was “Home Sweet Home,” in large part because the crowd sang most of it. Sadly, at least on this night, Mötley Crüe seemed hopelessly past their prime and ready for that long-promised retirement.

Def Leppard

Def Leppard’s set was a master class in rock show pacing and song placement. Open with a song from the new album (“Take What You Want”) when everyone is still making their way back from the bar or the bathroom, while quickly highlighting the band’s dual guitar attack. Head right into some old stuff (“Let It Go”) to pay fan service to those who have been along for the entire ride. Drop in a huge hit (“Animal”) from your biggest album (“Hysteria”) before launching into a Top 10 single (“Foolin’”) from your breakout record (“Pyromania”). Sprinkle in some ballads and acoustic numbers in the middle, rev up the rockers for the finale and turn on the house lights.

Every part of the stadium show was big, bold, loud and extremely well produced — just like their music.

My favorite moments of the night all came during Def Leppard’s set: Guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell stepping to the fore of the stage to trade licks reminded everybody why they came out for a 7-hour marathon of a show; A golden gong dropping from the rafters so drummer Rick Savage could whack it one time at the end of “Hysteria”; Polaroids of the band members through the years filling the big screens like a high school yearbook during “Photograph.”

Poison’s homecoming performance at SoFi pulsed with unbridled joy. As their set made clear, the boys from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, by way of the Sunset Strip are still having nothin’ but a good time.

“Southern California, I cannot stop smiling,” singer Bret Michaels said. “I think you can tell I’m wicked fired up tonight.”

Poison — like all the bands on the bill except Def Leppard — call Los Angeles home. The Stadium Tour — and the return to Southern California — was a long time coming with show dates postponed twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Poison seemed like a tight, well-oiled rock n’ roll machine.

Guitarist C.C. DeVille’s performance carried the band, which relied heavily on his guitar pyrotechnics during a set that revealed the thinness of its catalog. I wanted to hear more from their “Look What the Cat Dragged In” debut that rocketed them to MTV stardom.

The highlight of the set — and likely every Poison concert — was “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Everyone knows the chorus by heart and many in the crowd seemed to know all the verses — the lyrics returning by muscle memory like praying the rock n’ roll rosary. Fans dutifully turned on their smartphone camera lights throughout “Rose” even though it was still daylight inside the stadium.

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts

Jett grew nostalgic for her adopted hometown as she introduced the first song she ever wrote – “You Drive Me Wild.”

“I used to live here,” Jett said to cheers. “Started my first band here called The Runaways.”

Among the highlights from Jett’s SoFi set: “Cherry Bomb” (The Runaways hit), “Do You Wanna Touch Me” (a Gary Glitter cover) and “I Hate Myself for Loving You” (A bubblegum rocker with an irresistible chorus). The band closed with a one-two punch that featured the obligatory singalong crowd pleaser, “I Love Rock n Roll,” before launching into the rousing and rumbling “Bad Reputation.”

Classless Act

Los Angles-based outfit Classless Act, which opened the show, had the most to say about the future of rock ‘n’ roll circa 2022. The quintet are signed to Better Noise Music, which is also home to the solo projects of Mötley Crüe players Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx.

Classless Act has taken advantage of its newfound relationships with rock ‘n’ roll royalty to pen songs featuring vocals by Mötley Crüe’s frontman and Justin Hawkins of The Darkness on its debut album, which came out in June.

The band played the stadium gig with boundless energy, as if the house was full even if the ushers outnumbered the audience as the crowd streamed in throughout its opening set. Rapper DMC of Run DMC made a surprise appearance on “Storm Before the Calm,” signaling a potential upcoming collaboration.

Classless Act drummer Chuck “El Chuco” McKissock waded into the crowd on the floor after the band’s set in search of his parents somewhere in SoFi.

“It’s a blast playing in L.A. and to be back home,” said McKissock, gazing up at the 70,000 seats still filling up. “It’s amazing.”

Among the highlights from Classless Act’s far too short set: “Give It to Me” and “This is for You.”

Looking Back, Looking Forward

Was it worth breaking my quarter-century glam metal moratorium to see these bands at SoFi Stadium? Absolutely.

Mötley Crüe may have disappointed, but Def Leppard and Poison made me remember what I loved about the music that some say signaled the death rattle of rock n’ roll. The Blackhearts were a fun bubblegum-flavored trip down memory lane and Classless Act gave me hope that the future of rock n’ roll is in good hands.

Rock isn’t dead if you take the time to get to know the latest practitioners. For now, I’m going to stick with the young guns and look forward to my next Struts, Dirty Honey or Black Stone Cherry concert. I’ll happily live my 1980s rock star dreams through the next generation of rockers.

Mötley Crüe Announce New Single, ‘Dogs of War’: ‘Fans Are Really Gonna Like It’

The veteran hard rockers have signed with Nashville's Big Machine Records for their first new music since 2019.

Motley Crue

Mötley Crüe promises there’s more where its brand new song “Dogs of War” came from.

The track and video, both out Friday (April 26), are the first releases under a new deal with Nashville’s Big Machine Records. It’s also the Crüe’s first new song since the Machine Gun Kelly collab “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” from the soundtrack for the 2019 Netflix biopic of the same name and the band’s first recording with new member John5 (Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie), who replaced original guitarist Mick Mars last year.

John5 confirms that “there’s gonna be more music to come out, that’s for sure. [Bassist] Nikki (Sixx) calls me all the time and says, ‘Hey dude, check this out’ and it sounds like it could be a demo from, like, the Too Fast For Love album or the Shout at the Devil album. He just has that inside him; he’s created this music and it sounds just like that era because that’s who the guy is.”

Neil describes the fiery-tempoed “Dogs of War” as “like old school meets new school. It’s got that old school vibe about it, but it’s new music. Nikki came up with it and he sent me the music and I thought it was really cool. So I started singing it and we got in the studio and it turned into the song I think the fans are really gonna like it.” The song was produced by frequent Crüe collaborator Bob Rock , which Neil says was a source of comfort for the band.

“He’s great,” the singer explains. “He’s  a lot of fun. He’s smart. He’s creative. He knows what the wants. He knows what to get from each guy to make them be their best. That’s what a good producer does, takes what you have and makes it better – and that’s what (Rock ) does to Mötley Crüe. That’s what we love about him. We know he’s not gonna change and we didn’t want any change. We wanted to do it just the way we always recorded with him.”

In making the new label deal announcement, Big Machine Chairman and CEO Scott Borchetta — the driving force behind the 2014 Nashville Outlaws: A Tribute to Mötley Crüe compilation — says that, “Growing up in Southern California, I was in Hollywood when these new sheriffs showed up and took over the city. It was loud. It was powerful. It was game changing. (The band has) reignited the flame with ferocious new Crüe Music.”

Neil, who resides in Nashville, calls Borchetta “a good friend … and a good friend of the band’s. They’re just a smart company that knows how to market songs and how to get them on the radio and do all the stuff you gotta do. They’re perfect for us.”

BMG remains the band’s home for catalog releases, however. This year it’s already released a Dolby Atmos remaster of The Dirt Soundtrack to celebrate its fifth anniversary as well as a Record Store Day re-release of the rarities compilation Supersonic and Demonic Relics on vinyl for the first time. Since this year is the 25th anniversary of the band’s legendary Dr. Feelgood album, fans have been speculating about some sort of release to commemorate that later in the year.

Back in 2014, of course, Mötley Crüe famously signed a “binding” contract for its The Final Tour farewell trek stipulating that support act Alice Cooper could cut their heads off if they broke it. Then, however, came The Dirt, which despite overwhelmingly negative reviews was a rating success, while the soundtrack hit No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and Top 5 on the Top Rock Albums and Soundtrack Albums charts. “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” single was also a Top 10 Mainstream Rock hit.

“John brings a lot,” Neil says. “He’s an amazing, creative guitar player. He hears stuff us normal people don’t hear. He brings a lot to the song and a lot to the band, and we’re just so happy to have him.” The feeling is mutual according to John5, who collaborated with Sixx on Sixx A.M. projects and co-wrote the three new songs on The Dirt Soundtrack .

“I love Motley and I’ve known Mick, Tommy (Lee) and Nikki for so long, it’s just like playing with your friends,” the guitarist says. “Their music is something I care about. I care about the history and I care about the future of this band, so I want to do things with the utmost respect and make sure everything is done right and execute it to the ability it deserves.”

Mötley Crüe will play selected shows this year starting May 3-4 at Hard Rock Live in Atlantic City, N.J. and including several festival dates.
