Althorp - Princess Diana's Childhood Home

diana grave visit

Althorp has been the home of the Spencers, the late Princess Diana's family, for more than 500 years. It's currently the home of Princess Diana's brother, the 9th Earl Spencer and also the site of the Princess's grave.

The family opened the house, including a lake and an island and surrounded by a 550-acre walled park, more than 50 years ago. Long before Diana became the Princess of Wales, visitors could enjoy the fine furnishings and artwork collected by twenty generations of Spencers.

Today, most visitors to Althorp (pronounced Althrup by some but actually a pretentious affectation these days ) come to see Diana's childhood home which can be visited by guided tours, booked in advance. The more than 500-year-old home holds one of Europe’s finest private collections of furniture, paintings, and ceramics. Still a family home, Althorp has 90 rooms - only some of which are open to the public.

A Very Special Memorial

Diana's grave is on an island in the lake, known as The Round Oval. It is private and cannot be visited. A funerary urn perched on a column on one end of the lake indicates that the island is a burial place. Visitors can, however, contemplate the Princess at the lakeside Temple which is dedicated to her memory. The Temple was originally created by the 2nd Earl Spencer to celebrate a naval victory over the French during the Battle of the Nile under Nelson. It stood in the gardens of Admiralty House, in London until 1901, when it was bought by the 5th Earl and transported to Althorp. The purchase price was just £3. In 1926, the Temple was moved to its current location. Visitors can see it as part of exploring Althorp's grounds.

The Truth About Why Princess Diana's Grave Isn't Open To The Public

Princess Diana staring

Princess Diana 's tragic death in August 1997 was one of those truly world-stopping moments in our collective history. The People's Princess was killed in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris (per Oprah Daily ). She was just 36 years old.

The grief felt throughout the world was simply massive. So many fans of the royal family felt connected with Diana's compassionate presence. Millions of people lined the streets of London mourning Diana on the day of her funeral. In addition, 2.5 billion people worldwide tuned in to watch the services (per  The History Channel ). Her funeral was held at Westminster Abbey after a four-mile procession that saw Prince Charles and Prince Philip accompanying Prince William and Prince Harry on the walk, which they also shared with Diana's brother, Earl Charles Spencer .

Following the public funeral services, Diana was laid to rest in a private ceremony with just a handful of family members.

Princess Diana is buried at her childhood home

Originally, the plan was for Princess Diana to be buried at the Spencer family vault at a church in Great Brington. In the time leading up to her funeral, Earl Charles Spencer decided to change that plan. He wanted Prince William and Prince Harry to be able to visit Diana's grave whenever they wanted without privacy concerns. After seeing the public outpouring of mourning, they believed the public would be flocking to her grave for years to come (per BBC ).

To assure her loved ones always had unfettered access, Spencer decided it was best for Diana to be buried at the family home, Althorp House. The area she was buried in is an ornamental lake known as The Oval, located within Althorp Park's Pleasure Garden. There, you can find an arboretum where Diana and her loved ones, including her sons, had all planted trees.

Princess Diana was buried in a black woolen long-sleeved cocktail dress by Catherine Walker. She'd bought it just weeks before she died (via  Parade ). She was buried holding a rosary that was gifted to her by Mother Teresa (via  Baltimore Sun ).

There were other security concerns

Princess Diana's brother was deeply concerned about security measures when it came to his nephews visiting their mother's grave. He was also concerned about the legions of people who had conspiracy-type ideas about Diana. The isolated spot made it so intruders couldn't possibly vandalize or stalk the grave and continue to victimize Diana in her time of peace.

As her little brother, Earl Charles Spencer felt fiercely protective of Diana's legacy and privacy. "It is a point to remember that of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this — a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age," he said in her eulogy (via  Town & Country ).

In 1998, Spencer revealed some of the reasoning behind the spot. He felt the water would "act as a buffer against the interventions of the insane and ghoulish, the thick mud presenting a further line of defense" (via  The Sun ). "We all agreed that, with its beauty and tranquility, this was the place for Diana to be."

You can visit Althorp House in the summers

You can visit the Althorp House estate, located an hour and a half outside of London, during the summer when it is open to visitors. While guests can't go and visit the Princess' grave, they are able to leave messages and gifts at a memorial built across from it.

The memorial temple is decorated with a black-and-white marble cameo of Diana, with her name etched across the top (via  Parade ). It also featured a quote from the beloved princess: "Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society. It is a goal and an essential part of my life. A kind of destiny. Whoever is in distress can call on me. I will come running wherever they are."

Despite what is available to the public, Spencer has noted that there have been attempts to breach security and intruders caught attempting to visit Diana's grave. In 2017 alone, there were four attempted break-ins (via  Closer Weekly ). "We've had four attempted break-ins towards her body in the last 20 years and I'm very glad we've seen all of them off," Spencer told  BBC Radio 4 . "There are some odd people out there and keeping her right here is the safest place."

One person has been called out for not visiting Diana's grave

Over the years, Prince Harry and Prince William have both opened up about their complicated feelings about their mother's death. Both princes are believed to regularly visit Diana's grave when their schedules allow. Harry's even had flowers laid there since having moved to the United States, as recently as Mother's Day (via  Page Six ).

In 2001, Earl Charles Spencer was asked if Prince Charles ever visits the gravesite. "Prince Charles has an open invitation, as he knows, to come to the memorial but he has yet to take up that invitation," he told BBC Radio Five (via Daily Mail ). When asked why he thought Prince Charles had not visited the site, Spencer replied, "Look at it from his point of view. It's an ex-wife at the end of the day and maybe that's how he views it. He recently said he wanted to draw a line under the whole episode and let Diana rest in peace and maybe he views him not going there as helping that process."

It's unclear which royal spouses have been there

It was reported that Prince William first brought Kate Middleton to visit Diana's grave before the two were married. "It was very important for William to take Kate to visit his mum just before their wedding day," a source told  The Daily Mirror (via  Reuters ). "Diana is a huge part of her boys' everyday life and always will be. It is tragic that she won't be there to see the wedding and that she never got to meet his bride."

It was also significant because William proposed to Kate with Diana's iconic sapphire engagement ring. "It's very special to me," William told reporters during their engagement interview. "It's my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement and the fact we are going to spend the rest of our lives together."

As for Prince Harry's bride, Meghan Markle , there were reports the two were due to visit in 2019 with their newborn, Archie Harrison (via  The Express ). It's unclear whether the trip happened, or whether Meghan had been there previously.

a close up of Princess Diana's grave at the Althorp estate

As another year since her tragic and untimely death passes her memory is kept alive with not only those who knew and loved her sharing their memories but even those who weren’t born are taught about her life and the impact she had. We share where the late Princess Diana is buried.

This year (2023) marks 26 years since the day Princess Diana died - 31 August 1997 - a date that many remember vividly for the shockwaves the sad news sent across the globe. Known as the "People's Princess" - it was the public who indeed mourned the loss of Princess Diana following the car crash in Paris that killed her, her then-boyfriend at the time Dodi Fayed (son of Mohamed Al Fayed ), and driver Henri Paul. The sole survivor of the incident was Princess Diana's bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones .

Her tragic death is about to be featured in the upcoming season six of The Crown on Netflix , with her son Prince William as he deals with his ‘mother’s death ’.

Many will recall the thousands of flowers laid outside Buckingham Palace in the aftermath and the image of her two young sons, Prince William and Prince Harry , walking behind their mother's coffin at the funeral. But people are less familiar with where Princess Diana was buried and whether her grave is accessible to the public. Here's everything you need to know…

Where is Princess Diana buried?

Princess Diana is buried on a small island known as 'The Oval' at Althorp Park, Northamptonshire , which is the home of the Spencer family. The estate was bought in 1508 by John Spencer and Diana is said to have loved the grounds and the house.

Her body is buried on the island, which is next to an ornamental lake (called The Oval) within Althorp Park's Pleasure Garden. The area is surrounded by trees planted by Prince William, Prince Harry, and even Diana herself.

The original plan was for Diana to be laid to rest at the nearby Great Brington church. Several Spencer family members including Diana's father are buried here in the Spencer Family Vault. However, this plan was later abandoned, with the family concerned about the safety and security of her grave. They also worried that the local church and Brington would be overwhelmed by the number of visitors wanting to see the late Princess' grave.

Whilst Diana did have a public funeral, it was a royal ceremonial funeral rather than a state funeral , and her burial was a private affair with family members only.

Can you visit Princess Diana's grave?

Yes, you can visit Althorp Park. The family estate is located an hour and a half outside of London. Whilst Diana's grave on the island is not accessible to the public, it can be viewed from a distance and there is an opportunity to leave flowers at a nearby memorial. However, the house and park are only open to the public at a certain time of the year. Althorpe Estate has announced on its official website that “Althorp House is now closed for the season. We look forward to welcoming you in the summer of 2024.” As each year the house and gardens are open from the beginning of July until the end of August. In 2023 it was open from Monday 3rd July until Thursday 31st August. The exact opening dates for 2024 have not yet been announced but it could open as early as Monday, July 1st.

The memorial temple features a black-and-white marble plaque of Diana, with her name engraved across the top. It also bears a Princess Diana quote which reads: "Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society. It is a goal and an essential part of my life. A kind of destiny. Whoever is in distress can call on me. I will come running wherever they are."

A post shared by Althorp House (@althorphouse) A photo posted by on

Diana’s brother Earl Charles Spencer surprised royal fans when he revealed that although the temple is a place to worship Diana, the construction was not actually built for her.

He penned, “Beautiful autumn colours in the grounds of Althorp House today. This temple, now dedicated to my late sister’s memory, was originally commissioned by our ancestor George John Spencer. He was in charge of the Royal Navy in the early part of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1798 initial reports from Egypt said the British fleet had been destroyed in a crucial battle by the French. George John fainted with shock.”

His post continued, “When the true version of the Battle of the Nile followed, outlining what was an astonishing victory by Nelson over the French, George John had this structure built - in thanks to God. It overlooks the Round Oval lake at Althorp and has become the place where kind visitors like to leave flowers in memory of Diana."

Why was Princess Diana buried in a coffin?

Though Princess Diana was divorced from Prince Charles - and no longer considered royal - she was buried in a lead-lined coffin which is traditional royal protocol , even though she wasn't buried near other members of the Royal Family .

This is because Diana was a famous figure and as she was so adored by the British public it was decided that a public funeral and royal coffin be appropriate.

Diana's coffin traveled back from Paris - where she died - and was initially held at the Chapel Royal at St James's ahead of her funeral. However, the coffin was later moved to Kensington Palace - her former home - following safety concerns. Following the public funeral, a private burial took place at Althorp.

The lead lining in Diana's coffin helps preserve the body and slows down the decomposition of the body - creating an airtight seal that fends off moisture. It was important that her coffin also be lead-lined, especially as she lay to rest in a vault. UK law states that a coffin must be sealed if it is for internment above ground.

Prince Harry revealed in his memoir Spare that although he wished to be buried alongside his mother, it was not deemed possible, so he has chosen to have his body laid to rest at Frogmore House. It’s likely that his initial burial request was denied for traditional reasons, as despite being a stately home, the house and estate aren’t an official royal residence.

Do Prince William and Prince Harry visit Diana's grave?

Yes, over the years, Diana's two sons Prince William and Prince Harry have both visited their mother's grave . In July 2017, the two princes attended a private service at her grave to mark 20 years since her death - it was held on what would have been her 56th birthday.

Held at Althorp House - where Diana is buried - the service was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby . The Duchess of Cambridge (now known as Kate, Princess of Wales), Prince George , and sister Princess Charlotte were also at the ceremony.

And whilst Prince Harry is now living in LA - and thousands of miles away - he still makes sure to pay his respects on important occasions. On Mother's Day 2021, a spokesperson for the Prince told Insider : "The Duke arranged for flowers to be laid at his mother's grave on Sunday morning."

The same day, Prince William's three children (born after her untimely death) wrote cards to their "Granny Diana" - as shared by the official Kensington Palace social media account.

This year Mother’s Day will be different once again. Many of us will be apart from our loved ones, but looking forward to a time in the not too distant future when we can give our mother a hug again. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/Bys6OCqtTT March 14, 2021

And in 2023 it was reported by Hello! that Prince Harry secretly took his wife Meghan Markle to see his late mother’s grave in 2022. The details of the visit were revealed by Prince Harry in his explosive memoir Spare .

Speaking about their troublesome journey and Meghan’s special prayer, Harry revealed that their boat got stuck in the mud but luckily Diana’s brother Earl was on hand to give them “a little push”.

He told fans that it was Meghan’s first time at the burial site and that he left flowers at her grave.

"I was finally bringing the girl of my dreams home so she would meet my mother," the memoir reads.

He noted that he mentally asked his mother for guidance and to see things clearly, and when he asked Meghan what she prayed for, she replied with the same.

Has King Charles visited Princess Diana's grave?

Princess Diana's brother confirmed in an interview in 2001 that King Charles , who was known by the title Prince Charles at the time, had never visited Diana's grave. Earl Spencer said, “Prince Charles has an open invitation, as he knows, to come to the memorial but he has yet to take up that invitation."

As reported by the Daily Mail , the interview was between the Earl and then-Radio Five presenter Simon Mayo. Asking why he thought Charles had not paid a visit, Spencer added, "Look at it from his point of view. It's an ex-wife at the end of the day and maybe that's how he views it.

"He recently said he wanted to draw a line under the whole episode and let Diana rest in peace and maybe he views him not going there as helping that process."

No new information on whether Charles has visited Diana's grave has been shared since the interview. However, Cheatsheet reported that a statement was released on behalf of the Duke of Cornwall, who is now known as King Charles, sharing that: “The matter of whether Prince Charles has visited the late Princess of Wales’s grave is a personal and private matter for him.”

Meanwhile, royal expert Robert Jobson told the Royal Beat podcast Charles once ‘smashed a window’ during a visit to Diana’s childhood home and ‘never went back’.

He claimed, “Charles only really went there once and stayed there, I remember this little story that happened when he was there.

"He got into such a mood that he was trying to open the window, and he couldn't open the window and he smashed the window when he was there.

"He never went back.

"He couldn't get it to open because he wanted the air to come in and he couldn't open the window."

Where is Princess Diana buried? If Althorp resting place is accessible to public

Her final resting place is on an island in an ornamental pond, known as the round oval within althorp park’s gardens.

The final six episodes of the last series of The Crown have been released turning the focus from the life and death of Diana, Princess of Wales to the aftermath for rest of the Royal family.

Prince William and Prince Harry come to the fore in the second part of the Netflix series, which was available to stream on 14 December.

The first episode in part two, entitled Willsmania, explores the Prince’s return to Eton as he comes to terms with the loss of his mother and a later trip to Canada with his father and brother.

And in poignant final scenes in this episode, we see the teenage Prince visiting his mother’s grave at her family’s ancestral home in Northamptonshire.

Where is Diana, Princess of Wales buried?

After her funeral at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 September 1997, her coffin was taken to the Spencer family estate Althorp.

It was a private burial attended by the then Prince Charles, Princes William and Harry, the Princess’s mother and siblings, one close friend and a clergyman.

The original plan was for the Princess to be interred in the Spencer family vault at the local church in nearby Great Brington.

But her brother Lord Charles Spencer had concerns about public safety and security and visitors overwhelming the parish of Great Brington.

And so it was decided her grave should be a place which could be visited in privacy by her close family.

Her final resting place is on an island in an ornamental pond, known as The Round Oval within Althorp Park’s gardens.

Her burial place is marked with a white memorial plinth and urn.

Can the public visit her final resting place?

The public are not able to visit the island where she is laid to rest, it was chosen for this very reason.

Lord Spencer reportedly said the choice of location would “act as a buffer against the interventions of the insane and ghoulish, the thick mud presenting a further line of defence”.

However, there is a Doric-style temple with the Princess’s name inscribed on top which is situated across from the lake, which is a place where visitors can lay down their floral tributes when the grounds of Althorp are open to the public in July and August each year.

All the Details on Princess Diana's Childhood Home, Althorp

The Princess of Wales's final resting place at Althorp features in the final episodes of The Crown .

Princess Diana Wearing a Hat

For those looking to pay homage to the late princess, Althorp is acually open to the public each summer, usually in July and August. Here's how you can plan a trip to the iconic country home:

When is Althorp open?

Althorp House

In 2023, Althorp House was open to guests from July 3 through August 31. "Showcasing one of Europe's finest private collections of furniture, paintings and ceramics, each intriguing room of this magnificent family home has a fascinating story of its own," Charles wrote on Instagram announcing that the property would be open for summer 2023.

Dates for the 2024 have not yet been announced, but the house's website says that they "look forward to welcoming you in the summer of 2024," suggesting that they do plan to open again next year.

Historically, the estate is open from noon to 5 p.m. daily, though visitors should take note that the last entry to the house is at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are available starting from £17.50 for access to the grounds (access to the grounds and the state rooms within the house starts from £25) with special pricing for children, seniors, and families. There is also a cafe and gift shop on site.

Princess Diana's grave is off-limits.

In addition to being Princess Diana's childhood home, Althorp is also her final resting place , but her grave is inaccessible to the public. It is located on an island in the middle of Round Oval, a lake on the property, and there is a separate memorial site on the grounds where visitors can pay tribute to the late Princess of Wales.

In 1998, Diana's brother, Earl Charles Spencer notably said that the lake would "act as a buffer against the interventions of the insane and ghoulish, the thick mud presenting a further line of defence."

"We all agreed that, with its beauty and tranquillity, this was the place for Diana to be," he said.

How do you get to the estate?

Located right off the M1 motorway, and roughly an hour and a half from London, Althorp is best accessed by car, though the proptery's website provides detailed information for travelers arriving by car, bus, train, or even bicycle.

Where is Princess Diana buried?

According to the BBC , it was her brother Earl Charles Spencer who decided Diana should be buried at the grounds of his home - where they both were raised as children.

The initial plan was for Diana to be buried in the family vault at the local church, but there were concerns for security and privacy.

Therefore, Charles decided to lay her to rest on an island at the centre of the Althorp House's oval lake.

The memorial temple  features a black-and-white marble plaque of Diana, with her name engraved across the top.

The Real Reason You Can't Visit Princess Diana's Grave

Princess Diana smiling

Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997 in an infamous car wreck that stunned the world. The 36-year-old Princess of Wales perished when her car plowed into the side of a tunnel while attempting to evade paparazzi.

Diana's death was a shock to everyone, especially the British. Although she had already divorced  Prince Charles , British nationals gave the late princess the royal treatment. Parade reports that more than a million people stood on the streets between Kensington Palace and Westminster Abbey to pay their respects to the People's Princess.

On the day of her funeral, Diana was buried on her family's estate, Althorp Park . According to Parade , "She was wearing a black woolen long-sleeved cocktail dress by Catherine Walker that she had ordered only weeks before she died, and holding a set of rosary beads that were a gift from Mother Theresa ."

With the death of Prince Philip on April 9, 2021, there has been renewed interest in Diana's grave, leading many to wonder if they can visit. The short answer: No. Why? Read on to find out.

Diana's grave moved to a place only family can access

While Diana was initially intended to be placed in her family's vault at their church, her brother Earl Spencer feared that such an accessible gravesite would attract too many visitors, according to Parade . Out of respect for Diana's family, especially her then-young sons, Prince Harry and Prince William, he instead decided to lay Diana to rest on an island within their estate.

While the island is not open to visitors, Althorp Park is. Visitors can go to the lake — the path to which is lined with 36 oak trees, one for each year of Diana's tragically short life. From the edge of the lake, visitors can look out at the island, where Parade reports "... the white memorial urn ... glows among the lush greenery."

There is also a temple on the lake dedicated to Diana (pictured above), where visitors can leave flowers and notes. Via The Sun , the temple is adorned with a black-and-white profile portrait of the princess atop a black bench. The Oval Lake, as it is called, actually underwent a major redesign in 2017 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the princess' death.

Royal Fans Can Visit Princess Diana's Memorial During Select Times and Dates Only

Kori Williams - Author

Oct. 1 2021, Updated 12:11 p.m. ET

One of the most ever-present stories surrounding The British Royal Family is the untimely death of Princess Diana . Although decades have gone by since she passed away, many are keeping her memory alive, including her sons, Prince William , Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry , through various means.

Some supporters of Princess Diana and her family may want to visit her grave to celebrate her life and pay their respects. For a short period of time, the estate where she is buried made it possible for fans to get pretty close to doing just that. Here's what you need to know about where she's buried and how to go about visiting her grave.

Where is Princess Diana buried?

According to the BBC , Princess Diana is buried at her family home at the Althorp Estate. Initially, she was going to be laid to rest in her family's vault at a church in Great Brington, but her brother Charles , Ninth Earl Spencer, said he was concerned about her grave being so open to the public. He wanted a place for her sons to visit her privately and where things would be maintained, so he made the change.

To be more specific, Princess Diana is buried on an island in a lake called The Oval, located in the Althorp Pleasure Garden. There, she's surrounded by trees that have been planted by members of her family as well as by her.

According to the Althorp Estate's website, Charles has been in charge there for almost three decades. The home on its grounds has 500 years of history within its walls, and each room is said to have its own unique story.

Can you visit Princess Diana's grave?

The opportunity to visit the Althorp Estate and Princess Diana's memorial is only available during certain times that are predetermined by those who run the estate. As of now, there are no tickets available for purchase on their official website .

The royal family previously allowed visitors with advanced reservations to check out the grounds from July 1 to 4 and July 6 to August 30, 2021. Beyond those dates, the estate isn't open to the public during any other time of the year.

However, tickets to Althorp Estate aren't necessarily tickets to Diana's gravesite. In fact, no visitors are permitted direct access to Princess Diana's final resting place. The memorial that was erected for the public is all that is accessible, built across The Oval lake from where she is buried. With that being said, visitors are allowed to leave messages and gifts in that area.

Charles noted that there have been a few break-in attempts over the years, but they've all been unsuccessful.

"We've had four attempted break-ins toward her body in the last 20 years and I'm very glad we've seen all of them off," he told BBC Radio 4 (per The Mirror ) in 2017. "There are some odd people out there and keeping her right here is the safest place."

The memorial temple has Princess Diana's name across the top, and features a black-and-white image of her, along with one of her quotes.

"Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society," it says, per Parade . "It is a goal and an essential part of my life. A kind of destiny. Whoever is in distress can call on me. I will come running wherever they are."

Will, Kate and Harry visit Princess Diana's grave on her birthday

Almost 20 years since Princess Diana's death, her children, and the grandchildren she never met, visited her grave Saturday. The mother of Prince William and Prince Harry would have turned 56 years old that day.

Prince William and Prince Harry to mark Diana's birthday at her grave

William's wife, the Duchess Kate of Cambridge, and kids Prince George and Princess Charlotte were included in a private rededication service, along with Diana's siblings. Prince Charles, Diana's ex-husband, was absent from the event and in Canada with his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. According to Kensington Palace, the ceremony took place in Althorp House, in Northamptonshire in the English countryside, and conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Althorp House is open to tourists periodically, but Diana's gravesite has been off-limits to the public and Earl Spencer, Diana's brother, announced a multi-million-dollar redesign of the island, earlier this month.

William and Harry, who were 15 and 12 years old when their mother died in a car crash on in 1997, have marked the anniversary by commissioning a statue of Diana. Before the statue is erected in the public gardens of Kensington Palace in London in August, visitors are leaving balloons, signs and flowers at the palace gates to honor Diana.

Princess Diana statue viewing times: When can you visit and who are the children with her?

Diana's 60th birthday

Today is the 25th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales , after she tragically passed away in a car crash in 1997.

Diana ’s death shocked the world and, in the subsequent decades, her influence and legacy are still felt today.

Speaking recently about Diana, her son, Prince Harry said: “There isn’t a day during the past two-and-a-half decades I haven’t thought about the mark she left, not only on me and my brother but on all of our lives.”

To commemorate what would have been her 60th birthday in 2021, a statue of Diana, Princess of Wales was unveiled in the Sunken Garden in Kensington Palace.

The Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace was reportedly chosen because it was one of Diana’s favourite places.

Diana spent much of her time in the green space surrounding the palace where she lived for more than 15 years. She loved flowers, especially forget-me-nots, white lilies, white roses, tulips, narcissi, and Cosmo daisies.

“She would stop by and talk to the gardeners when she was living here,” Sean Harkin, head gardener at Kensington Palace, told Vogue.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Princess Diana statue, and when it’s open to the public.

When can you visit the Princess Diana statue?

The Sunken Garden, featuring the statue of Diana, Princess of Wales, can be viewed in normal opening hours only, Wednesday - Sunday, 10am - 5.45pm.

Who are the children with her in the statue?

The two children in the statue don’t represent anyone in particular, according to a Kensington Palace spokesperson, but instead are meant to reflect Diana’s unique bond with children, and her caring side.

The palace said. “The figure of Diana, Princess of Wales, is surrounded by three children, who represent the universality and generational impact of the princess’s work.”

Artist Ian Rank-Broadley was chosen to design the statue.

In a joint statement, Harry and William said: “Ian is an extremely gifted sculptor and we know that he will create a fitting and lasting tribute to our mother.”

The artist has royal connections, having completed the Armed Forces Memorial . His effigy of Queen Elizabeth II has been on Commonwealth coins dating back to 1998.

In his own statement, Mr Rank-Broadley said of the statue: “It is my sole and highest intention to fulfil the expectations of Their Royal Highnesses in creating a lasting and fitting memorial to their late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.”

The Sweet, Somber Significance of Princess Diana's Final Resting Place

diana grave visit

Seven days after Princess Diana's tragic death in August 1997, she was honored with a public funeral that remains one of the most watched events in history. Millions of people crowded the streets of London to follow the route of Diana's coffin from Kensington Palace along Hyde Park to St. James's Palace, passing Buckingham Palace and observing her memory in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Later that day, Diana was taken to her final resting place at her childhood home, the Spencer estate in Althorp .

diana grave visit

Though many attended her funeral, the Princess of Wales was buried privately; the only people present were a close friend, her mother and siblings, Prince Charles, William, Harry, and a clergyman. Diana wore a black dress by Catherine Walker and held on to a rosary given to her by Mother Teresa (who, sadly, died the same week as Diana). She was laid to rest on a small island in the middle of a lake at Althorp. The family estate is located about 70 miles from London in the town of Northampton, UK, and spans nearly 13,000 acres. Built in 1508, then-Lady Diana Spencer moved to the lavish home when her father, John Spencer, inherited the earl title in 1975. When he passed in 1992, Diana's brother Charles took the title as well as operation over the estate.

diana grave visit

After her death, Earl Spencer decided that her gravesite was better off at Althorp than at their family vault in the local church, because it could be more easily cared for and, most importantly, offered better privacy for William and Harry to visit . Before his wedding to Kate Middleton in April 2011, William is said to have brought Kate to visit Diana's gravesite , where they reportedly laid flowers. The island where Diana's grave sits is accessed by a path of 36 trees — one for every year of her life — and black swans and white roses float in the water. It also holds a tall monument dedicated to the princess, as well as a temple for visitors to pay their respects. On either side of the template is a tablet; one is engraved with the tribute Prince Charles gave at her funeral, and the other has quotes from Diana about her love and commitment to charity work . In 2015, Earl Spencer and his wife, Karen, Countess Spencer, set forth a huge revamp of the property where Diana is buried — the first in 350 years. It is scheduled to be done just before the 20th anniversary of her death in August 2017.

Meghan Markle Visited Princess Diana’s Grave to Ask for “Clarity and Guidance,” Prince Harry Writes

“She was on her knees with her eyes closed and her palms flat against the stone.”

Meghan Markle

In a revelation from his upcoming tell-all, Spare , Prince Harry reveals that, during a visit he and wife Meghan Markle made to the grave of his late mother, Princess Diana , Meghan asked Diana for clarity and guidance amidst ongoing press scrutiny in the U.K.

Harry and Meghan took a trip to Althorp House in Northamptonshire—where Diana is buried—to honor the twentieth anniversary of his mother’s death in a Parisian car crash in 1997, Us Weekly reports. During the visit, Harry left Meghan alone for a private moment with the mother-in-law she never knew.

“When I returned, she was on her knees with her eyes closed and her palms flat against the stone,” Harry writes, adding that Meghan was asking the late Princess of Wales for “clarity and guidance.”

Meghan’s request came as she “tackled the public scrutiny from the U.K. press due to her relationship with Harry,” Us Weekly reports, adding that Meghan “faced major obstacles during her time overseas.”

Harry has likened Meghan’s treatment by the U.K. press to his late mother’s experience with the media, and, in the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s six-part Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan , Harry compared his wife to his mother, saying “so much of what Meghan is, and how she is, is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion, the same empathy, she has the same confidence, she has this warmth about her.”

Harry had two serious relationships prior to meeting Meghan in 2016—with Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas—and he said in Harry & Meghan , of finding the right person, “I remember thinking, ‘How can I ever find someone who is willing and capable to be able to withstand all the baggage that comes with being with me?’ Every relationship that I had, within a matter of weeks or months, was splatted all over the newspapers, and that person’s family was harassed, and their lives turned upside-down.”

Spare will be released in full this Tuesday, January 10.

Princess Diana passed away in 1997

Despite the sad anniversary of his sister's passing this month, in June, Charles and wife Karen celebrated their eleventh wedding anniversary.

Proposing to his now wife after less than a year of dating, the Earl presented Karen with a very sentimental ring, opting for a stunning trilogy engagement ring with three round diamonds on a silver band, which was actually a family heirloom.

It was once given to Charles' great grandmother, Countess Margaret Spencer, on her wedding day to 6th Earl Spencer, Liberal politician Charles.

On the tenth anniversary of their engagement in 2021, Karen marked the special milestone with a photo on Instagram, cuddled up to the Earl.

Charles Spencer has revealed that a touching birthday tribute to Princess Diana left him overcome with emotion this week. The Earl Spencer hosted his 60th birthday at Althorp , the 13,000 acre estate where he grew up alongside Diana and their two sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

'I had 30 friends and family to stay over the weekend,' Charles Spencer posted on his Instagram page, 'The speech at dinner on Saturday was given by “William Purefoy”, who was a fellow new boy at Maidwell - those who’ve read A Very Private School will know him. 'I was brought down to the lake at Althorp by a friend, on Saturday. Her husband handmade this astonishingly beautiful canoe for me, as a surprise, over many months. I cried on seeing it. It’s almost too exquisite to paddle.

Princess Diana is buried in a small grave on Oval Island, in the centre of Althorp’s Oval Lake, which is surrounded by trees planted by Prince William , Prince Harry , and Diana herself. The island, which is only accessible by lake, is ‘a happy and secure place’ to lay the Princess to rest, Earl Spencer told People .

While a temporary walkway was constructed for access to the island during the Princess’s funeral, The Independent reported that the family had it removed due to safety concerns.

‘It’s remoteness is entirely intentional,’ wrote Charles in his book Althorp: The Story of an English House , describing how the lake acts as ‘a buffer against the interventions of the insane and goulish, the thick mud presenting a further line of defence.’

Indeed, Charles cited security concerns as the reason Diana was not buried alongside many Spencer family members in St Mary the Virgin Church, 80 miles away in Great Brington.

Diana is buried at her childhood home in Althorp, which brother Charles called 'a happy and secure place’ for the Princess.

He told the BBC : ‘There was such a whipped-up feeling of emotion everywhere that I was very worried about where we could safely bury her.’

Speaking at the time, Earl Spencer explained the decision to bury his sister at her childhood home: 'It has been decided to bury Diana, Princess of Wales, in the grounds of Althorp Park, where her grave can be properly looked after by her family and visited in privacy by her sons.'

In the years since, both William and Harry have visited Oval Island. In 2017, the Princes visited Althorp to re-dedicate their mother’s grave in a service to commemorate her 56th birthday, close to the 20th anniversary of her death. Kate Middleton , then Duchess of Cambridge , Prince George , and Princess Charlotte attended the ceremony, which was overseen by Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Despite living in California, Prince Harry continues to pay his respects, arranging for flowers to be laid on the grave for Mothers’ Day in 2021, according to Insider .

In his autobiography, Spare , the Duke of Sussex revealed that he and his wife, Meghan Markle, had made a secret visit to Oval Island in 2022. Their boat, he recounted, got stuck in the thick mud that surrounds the site, but Charles Spencer was on hand to give the couple ‘a little push’.

‘I was finally bringing the girl of my dreams home so she would meet my mother,’ wrote the Duke. The memoir details how Harry and Meghan left flowers at the grave and mentally asked Diana for guidance.

The Spencer family have long been confidants of Harry’s, continuing to support The Prince as his relationship with the Windsors becomes increasingly frosty. Both Charles and Lady Jane Fellowes were the only members of Harry’s family to attend the Invictus Games ‘Thanksgiving Ceremony’ at St Paul’s earlier this month. Two miles down the river at Buckingham Palace, King Charles was hosting the first royal garden party of the season .

All About Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s Brother and Closest Sibling

Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s younger brother, delivered her eulogy in 1997

diana grave visit

Tim Graham Photo Library/Getty

Charles Spencer may have been Princess Diana’s younger brother — but the 9th Earl Spencer has always felt “intensely protective” of his late sister.

Though Charles grew up with three older siblings — Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes and the future people’s princess — he was closest with Diana , who was three years his senior. Sarah and Jane , who were nine and seven years older than Charles, were away at boarding school for most of his childhood. That left Diana and Charles in the care of their father, John Spencer, who received custody of the children following his 1969 divorce from their mother, Frances Shand Kydd .

“Diana and I had two older sisters who were away at school, so she and I were very much in it together and I did talk to her about it,” Charles told The Sunday Times about their parents’ split. “Our father was a quiet and constant source of love, but our mother wasn’t cut out for maternity. Not her fault, she couldn’t do it.”

As a result, the bond between Diana and Charles was strong throughout their childhood — and remained that way as they became adults, despite tabloid rumors to the contrary . When Princess Diana was killed in a car crash on Aug. 31, 1997, it was Charles who stood at the pulpit of Westminster Abbey and delivered her eulogy .

Following her death, Charles revealed to PEOPLE that he was haunted by thoughts that there was something more he could have done to save his older sister.

“You always think, God, I wish I could’ve protected her. It was just ... it was devastating,” he told PEOPLE in 2017. “I always felt ... intensely protective towards her.”

In the decades since Diana’s tragic death, Charles has continued to protect his older sister’s memory — becoming an outspoken defender of her legacy and champion of her causes . From his traumatic upbringing to his tireless devotion to Diana, here is everything to know about Princess Diana’s younger brother, Charles Spencer.

He is Princess Diana’s younger sibling

Born on May 20, 1964, in London, Charles Edward Maurice Spencer is the youngest of five children born to John Spencer and Frances Shand Kydd. He grew up with his three older sisters : Sarah, the eldest, born in 1955, followed by Jane in 1957 and Diana in 1961. Charles also had an older brother named John, who was born in 1960 but died just hours later — making Charles the only son and the heir to the earldom.

Though Charles never met his late brother, he honored his memory in May 2022 by having his tombstone restored. Charles shared before and after photos of the restoration on Instagram , along with a touching tribute to his older brother.

“Looking as it should, now,” Charles wrote alongside two photos of the grave. “I never knew my older brother, John, and live 100 miles from his grave — but, seeing it last summer, realised serious action was required. Thank you, BB, for making it look as it should.”

His parents divorced when he was a toddler

Charles’ parents, John and Frances, divorced in 1969 when Charles was just 3 years old. John was awarded full custody of his four children — but while Sarah and Jane attended boarding school, Diana and Charles lived at Althorp (the 500-year-old Spencer family estate) in Northamptonshire, England with their father.

The split was particularly “tough on Diana,” Charles previously told PEOPLE.

“While she [Frances] was packing her stuff to leave, she promised Diana [then aged 5] she’d come back to see her. Diana used to wait on the doorstep for her, but she never came,” he told The Sunday Times .

Charles also had his own issues as a result of his parents’ divorce, telling The Sunday Times that he’d been “in and out of therapy for 20 years” and had done “a lot of very profound work on my unhappy childhood.”

But “coming out the other side has been good,” he shared.

He has said there are “many myths” about his childhood with Diana

Hulton Archive/Getty

In 2017, Charles shared with PEOPLE that there are “many myths” about his upbringing — especially regarding his late sister, Diana.

“First of all, none of us ever called her ‘Di’ at home. In fact, there are so many myths from our childhood that are just so ridiculous. That's one of them,” Charles told PEOPLE.

He continued, “I just think she was never shy, but she was canny about people and she was reserved to start with. And she would take a judgment of somebody before reacting to them. So, that’s not shy ... that’s actually quite clever.”

Charles also described Princess Diana as “incredibly brave,” sharing an example from their childhood when he and his sisters were catching lobsters while visiting their mother in Scotland.

“We pulled up [a pot] and there was a really massive conger eel,” he said. “It was black and it had teeth was very long and it was flapping around the boat. And Diana just got a pen knife out and just dealt with it. It was hand-to-hand and she just got stuck in. This thing was really a creature from the deep. And she just dealt with it.”

He revealed he was sexually abused as a child while in boarding school

Charles Spencer Instagram

In March 2024, Charles revealed that he was sexually abused as a child while a student at Maidwell Hall, one of Britain’s most prestigious boarding schools. He provided more details on the physical, verbal and sexual abuse he experienced at the school in his memoir A Very Private School. He described how, at the age of 11, he was groomed and sexually abused by a 19 or 20-year-old assistant matron at the boarding school.

“[She] seemed to have an unofficial hierarchy among her prey: We learned, from our secret conversations, that she chose one of us each term to share her bed and would use him for intercourse ... She added me to the second rank of her victims: those she intimately touched," Charles wrote.

He added, “The effect of what she did to me was profound and immediate, awakening in me basic desires that had no place in one so young.”

And although Charles was incredibly close with his sister Diana growing up, neither she nor his other sisters knew of the abuse that he endured. When he did finally tell his sisters, Lady Jane and Lady Sarah, it wasn’t until the end of 2022 — and they were both “stunned and appalled,” Charles told PEOPLE.

He is a father of seven — and a grandfather

Ken Goff/Getty

Charles, who has been married three times, is the father of seven children.

He shares four children with his first wife, Victoria Lockwood: daughters Lady Kitty Eleanor Spencer , Lady Eliza Victoria Spencer and Lady Katya Amelia Spencer and son Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp .

His second marriage to Caroline Freud resulted in two more children: A son, the Honourable Edmund Spencer, and a daughter, Lady Lara Spencer. But after six years of marriage, Charles and Freud separated in 2007 and eventually divorced.

Charles married for the third time in 2011 to Canadian philanthropist Karen Spencer (née Gordon) . His six children were all present at the nuptials, which were held at Althorp Estate. Charles and Karen have one child together, a daughter named Lady Charlotte Diana Spencer — after Charles’ late sister Princess Diana.

His eldest daughter, Kitty, married Michael Lewis in Italy in 2021. In March 2024, Kitty revealed that she and her husband had welcomed a daughter, making Charles a first-time grandparent. One of his other daughters, Amelia, is also married: She wed Greg Mallett , her boyfriend of 11 years, in March 2023.

He delivered Princess Diana’s eulogy

Colin Davey/Getty

At Princess Diana’s funeral on Sept. 6, 1997, Charles stood in front of the thousands of gathered mourners (and the millions watching on television worldwide) to deliver her heart-wrenching eulogy.

Serving as “the representative of a family in grief, in a country in mourning, before a world in shock,” Charles paid tribute to his late sister as the “very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty.” But he also took the opportunity to condemn the treatment Diana had received from the tabloid media, describing her as “the most hunted person of the modern age.”

Charles previously told PEOPLE that the now iconic line “summed up so much of the anger I felt toward those who had done that to her.” In addition to the anger he felt, Charles also described the experience as physically and emotionally draining.

“In the final paragraph I had run out of energy, almost out of oxygen,” he shared with PEOPLE. “I had to punch each syllable out of the base of my stomach.”

He has written nine books

Amanda Edwards/WireImage

Charles is a renowned historian and best-selling author who has written nine books over the course of his career. In addition to his 2024 memoir, A Very Private School , Charles is the author of eight other non-fiction books — focusing much of his work on British history. Three of his books were Sunday Times bestsellers: Killers of the King , The White Ship and Blenheim: Battle for Europe (which was also shortlisted for History Book of the Year at the 2005 National Book Awards).

“It is a compulsion,” Charles said in a 2017 interview about his writing. “It’s hard work, it’s solitary, and it’s sometimes exasperating. But, at the end of the day, holding a new book that you’ve written remains one of life’s more thrilling experiences.”

In addition to his writing, Charles, who studied at Oxford, has also worked as a journalist and broadcaster.

He lives at his family’s 500-year-old estate Althorp

David Rogers/Getty

When Charles’ father John died in 1992, Charles became the 9th Earl Spencer and inherited Althorp, his family’s 500-year-old estate in Northamptonshire, England. It was built in 1508 and has housed 19 generations of the Spencer family —  including Charles and his sister Diana .

Althorp is also the final resting place of Princess Diana , who is buried at Oval Lake Grave — a small, secluded island found on the property’s 550 acres. Charles selected that location, as opposed to the family vault at St. Mary the Virgin church in Great Brington, due to concerns over public safety and privacy. He also oversaw a multimillion-dollar renovation of the burial site in 2016.

“We all agreed that, with its beauty and tranquility, this was the place for Diana to be,” he wrote in his 1998 book, Althorp: The Story of an English House .

He helps keep Diana’s memory and legacy alive

Amanda Edwards/WireImage ; Bettmann

Charles’ powerful bond with his sister Diana remains strong, even decades after her 1997 death. Though his older sisters rarely speak about Diana publicly, he regularly shares photographs from their childhood and memories of his late sister on his social media, commemorating events like her birthday , All Souls’ Day and the anniversary of her death .

Outside of social media, Charles speaks often about Diana and how her memory lives on today — especially in her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry , with whom he remains close.

“I love seeing the sort of uncomplicated way that they deal with people, and put them at their ease,” he told PEOPLE in 2017. “It’s so easy to connect the dots between them and their mother.

He continued, “I love the fact that there’s still such veneration inside her immediate family for what she was, and what she meant. I think that’s fantastic.”

The Earl Spencer also visits his sister’s grave frequently throughout the year. “Every landmark day, such as birthday, Mother’s Day, I always take flowers,” he told Good Morning Britain in 2021. “I do go a lot, and it’s an oasis of calm, and it's a lovely place to go.”

Some of Princess Diana's famous dresses are up for rare auction. Take a look at the collection

Diana, the Princess of Wales, has long been lauded as a fashion icon . And now, in the biggest auction of her dresses since 1997, some of Princess Diana's iconic outfits are up for purchase.

Following the sale of one of Diana's evening dress for more than $1.1 million in December, co-founder of Julien’s Auctions Martin Nolan said on TODAY May 20 that interest in selling more of her garments has skyrocketed.

"Because of that record amount, you're got press, then of course, people started to come to us and say, 'We have this to sell, we have that to sell,'" Nolan said. "So we built this sale. We're still building it, in fact."

More than 150 items will be on the auction block at Julien's Auctions, and Nolan said people can start bidding today on their website , ahead of the online and in-person sale on June 27.

princess diana outfits

Bethan Holt, fashion director at The Telegraph, said on TODAY that before Diana's death in August 1997 , she would use fashion to send messages "in so many ways."

"You could really tell when she was feeling happy or feeling sad depending on the clothes that she was wearing," Holt said. "You could tell when she was feeling brave you could really relate to Diana through the clothes that she wore."

Some of the items available were in TODAY's Studio 1A for co-anchor Savannah Guthrie to see, such as Diana's blue ball gown with silver stars, which she wore to the "Phantom of the Opera" in 1986, a luncheon in 1987 and a ballet performance of "Cinderella."

"She was in touch with fashion economics, Diana, but also she loves to shine a spotlight on designers that were not very well-known," Nolan said.

Buyers can also bid on the silk magenta dress with black lace, which Diana wore in London and Hamburg, Germany, in 1987, according to Julien's Auctions . The dress is designed by Victor Edelstein, the same designer behind the dress Diana wore while dancing with actor John Travolta at the White House in 1985.

"This is just an exquisite, beautiful designed gown," Nolan said.

In addition to dresses, one of Diana's iconic yellow power suits with navy trim and gold buttons will also be on the auction block. Diana wore the suit many times as well in the '80s and '90s, including when opening a Red Cross in Hong Kong, visiting a military base in Hong Kong and in London, Nolan said.

A floral shirt dress, an outfit Diana wore with her children, Prince William and Prince Harry, is also available for bidders.

"This is for a chic mom," Nolan said. "She wore it to William's school sports day, Harry's school and St. Mary's Hospital. And again, this is something that's fashionable today."

Some of Diana's accessories are also up for auction, which Nolan described as "unusual," including a wide-brimmed hat Diana wore in Australia, along with matching blue pumps and a bag.

"Just incredible, stylish, chic Diana," Nolan said.

CORRECTION:(May 23, 12:51 p.m. ET): A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the dress Diana wore while dancing with Travolta, the blue velvet dress, is available for auction. The silk magenta dress that she wore in London and Germany in 1987 is currently up for auction.

Memorial Day on Long Island: Parades, grave site tributes, a visit to the beach

diana grave visit

This story was reported and written by Lisa L. Colangelo , Candice Ferrette , Nicholas Spangler and Dandan Zou .

With Memorial Day parades, solemn ceremonies and visits to military grave sites, Long Islanders spent Monday honoring the men and women who made the supreme sacrifice.

The holiday stems from the American Civil War, the most deadly war of any in the nation’s history. More than 600,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed.

President Joe Biden joined military officials to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, noting each generation must ensure the sacrifice of the country's service members is not in vain.

"Freedom has never been guaranteed,” Biden said in remarks at the cemetery. “Every generation has to earn it, fight for it, defend it in the battle between autocracy and democracy, between the greed of a few, and the rights of many."

In New York, 16 state landmarks will be illuminated red, white and blue in honor of the fallen, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday. The sites include the Long Island Rail Road's East End Gateway at Penn Station, Moynihan Train Hall and One World Trade Center.

Rain held off for most of the day, until heavy showers arrived in the afternoon.

Pride in family, country

Under hazy skies, about 100 people gathered at Amityville’s village gazebo, including Cathy Nehring, William Brennan and their grandsons Owen and Jack Nehring, 5 and 12, for a ceremony.

Cathy Nehring said she wanted young Owen to “understand the importance of remembering all the soldiers and veterans, to be proud of them and our country.”

Service is a tradition in their family: Brennan’s father, also named William Brennan, served in World War II, while Brennan serves in the Air National Guard and Amityville Fire Department. He and Jack, one of the fire department’s junior members, stood in uniform and at attention during the memorial.

“This is what this community is all about,” Mayor Dennis Siry, a retired FDNY firefighter, said in an interview. “Year after year, we see a lot of the same faces and some new faces.”

The ceremony included prayers by clergy, remarks from veterans and elected officials and music by the Amityville High School band.

“Today we want to pay homage to those who made an extraordinary sacrifice for freedom,” said Mike Scirica, who deployed to Japan with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

The Sciricas, who live in Amityville, were children during World War II, and Nancy Scirica had friends who lost a brother who deployed to New Guinea to fight against Japan. This year, as she does every year around Memorial Day, she checked in with them again.

“I remember the sadness,” she said.

At Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, American flags rippled in the breeze, dotting gravestones of U.S. service members buried in straight, crisp rows.

“This is one of the most peaceful, most majestic places on earth. So many of them died before their time,” said Lou Oehler, who accompanied his wife, Susan, to visit the grave of her older brother, Henry Thomas York, killed at 19 in the Vietnam War.

Susan Palmer Oehler, 62, of North Babylon, was only 6 when her brother was killed. But she remembers playing in the family’s living room as service members knocked on the door to deliver the news of her brother’s death — a moment that changed their family forever.

Her mother instinctively bolted out the back door in disbelief. Her father answered the door, already grief-stricken.

York, a marine, died in combat in the Battle of Khe Sanh on Feb. 8, 1968. He was in a group of North Babylon High School seniors who were drafted or enlisted in 1967.

On Memorial Day morning, Palmer Oehler received a text from the wife of another marine who returned from Vietnam and recently died of natural causes. In the letter, the wife describes how her husband had been haunted for decades by York’s death and wanted to pass along a memory box filled with items from their time in the service.

Palmer Oehler said she believes it was a sign.

“For years, I searched and searched for my brother’s friends to hear stories about my brother,” Palmer Oehler said. “After all these years, you think it goes away but it doesn’t. It stays with you.”

The clean and orderly symmetry of the cemetery is a tribute to the people it holds, said Dave A. Smith, of Farmingdale, who visited his father’s grave with his wife, Maria, and grandson, Wyatt, 14.

“No matter what angle you look at the graves, they are in straight geometric lines," Dave Smith said. "It’s extraordinary and beautifully kept. We’re very happy about that because they all deserve it."

His father, Joseph Patrick Smith, a paratrooper who was wounded on D-Day after having been shot at six times, returned from World War II and went on to have four children although disabled and altered by the experience, his son said.

“It was rather a miracle that he made it,” Dave Smith said. “I was the youngest and he lived until I was 15.”

Joseph Smith has been buried in Long Island National Cemetery since 1968.

“It’s a very peaceful place. It’s where the memories flow very readily and we like being here,” Dave Smith said.

'Hardly anyone to visit them'

In another part of the cemetery, 13-year-old Matthew Carvajal walked in and out of the rows, placing his hand on top of some of the gravestones and reading the names of others.

“The only thing sadder than all of the dead people here is that there’s hardly anyone here to visit them,” Carvajal, of Centereach, said.

The eighth grade student at Dawnwood Middle School didn't know any of the fallen soldiers but asked his mother to take him there to pay respects after hearing his history teacher talk about the significance of the day.

His teacher described visiting the cemetery last year and noted how few people choose to spend the holiday commemorating the dead there.

It’s a direct way to show gratitude to those who gave their lives for the country, the teen said.

There are some who make regular trips to the cemetery such as sisters Michelle and Cheryl Sanders. They drove from New York City to visit the burial site of their father, Francisco Enriquez Sanders, a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II and died of a heart attack when they were just 4 and 5 years old, in 1961. They visit on birthdays and holidays — especially military holidays.

Although they were raised by their mother, the sisters are uniquely proud of their father, who was Filipino serving under American command.

“To do what he did, to come here from over there …even though there was oppression in the Philippines …he did right by our country,” Cheryl Sanders  said.

Sandy, chilly surf

Memorial Day was not far from the minds of beachgoers who ventured to Robert Moses State Park, hoping to grab some time on the sand before the rain started.

Prescilla Sanchez, of Bay Shore, donned a Blue Angels shirt while relaxing at the beach with her husband and two children, ages 4 and 1. She hadn't been able to attend one of the Jones Beach air shows this weekend to see the U.S. Navy pilot team known for their precision and aerial stunts because she had to work.

“It's just my way of showing homage to [the Navy] and to the service,” Sanchez said of her attire.

Her son, Anthony Orlando Wilson, was excited about the unofficial start of summer.  A fan of the water, Anthony, 4, wore a pair of orange shorts with turquoise alligators in swim rings. Playing with his mother, the boy screamed with glee as he ran from the shoreline when the cold water rose up to his knees.

“We just want to relax. Let the kids play. Yell,” Sanchez said. “We don't have to worry about cleaning up after them, other than their sand toys."

Michaela Heath, 10, had just finished marching in a Memorial Day parade with her Girl Scout troop and was enjoying the surf.

Her father, Richard Heath, cheered her on, before windy, steady rain sent beachgoers fleeing in midafternoon.

The water, which was in the mid-50s, was simply too cold for the older Heath, of Commack, even when it wasn’t raining.

Richard Heath was a little surprised at the sparse crowds on the beach as he imagined it would be busier.

“It’s overcast, a bit cool and windy,” he said. “But we're here and it's actually pretty good.”

Baldur's Gate 3: Where To Find Astarion's Grave

Quick links, where is astarion's grave, how to visit astarion's grave.

Baldur's Gate 3 is full of moments that truly leave players feeling brokenhearted for the many different companions and their storylines. One character that a ton of players have fallen in love with is Astarion .

The Best Part Of Baldur's Gate 3's Newest Patch Is Something No One Is Talking About

Astarion is a High Elf Rogue who has been living hundreds of years as a Vampire Spawn due to his old master, Cazador . Considering Astarion lived in Baldur's Gate when he died, it only makes sense that he still has a grave there. Here's how to find his grave.

Updated by Matthew Schomer on March 18, 2024: This guide has been updated to include a video version (featured above.)

Baldur's Gate 3

Released August 3, 2023

Developer(s) Larian Studios

Astarion's grave is located in the graveyard that is within the Lower City of Baldur's Gate. This is the same graveyard where you can find Karlach's parents buried, along with one of Shadowheart's earlier mentors . When you see Astarion's tombstone, you will learn his last name is Ancunin. This is the only place that his last name is mentioned in the game, and you can only figure this out if you translate the language on his tombstone. You will also learn that he died at the age of 39, an age that is extremely young for any Elf.

If you want to visit Astarion's grave, you can only do so if you romanced him and convinced him not to Ascend . If you meet these requirements, Astarion will take you to the graveyard himself and tell you about his death. He will say that he woke up days later inside his coffin. He was forced to dig himself out just to be met by Cazador when he finally was free. From then on out, he was Cazador's underling, being forced to do everything Cazador said. He will mark out the date of his death, symbolizing his desire to move on with his life.

Upon visiting the graveyard later, you will not be able to interact with Astarion's grave at all. The game will not even mention that it is nearby. However, there is a grave that the narrator mentions has been vandalized with the words "vampires are real," which could be a nod to Astarion's grave.
