Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean in Alaska

July 31, 2019 by Disney Cruise Mom 3 Comments

Today I am excited to share with you a guest blogger who recently sailed to Alaska on Royal Caribbean! I met Jody and her family on our Fantasy cruise last fall  where we kept running into each other over and over.  First, it was on our flight to Orlando (I don’t remember seeing them, but my husband does).  Then, we officially met standing in line for a bathroom on a tiny island the day that we stopped in Tortola  when we were eating lunch at the same restaurant. After that we ran into them several more times, and finally we were seated near each other on the flight home after the cruise and had lots of time to talk during the LONG wait at baggage claim.

Jody is just as big of a DCL fan as me (and has sailed on all 4 ships), but she is also a travel agent with much more knowledge of the other cruise lines than me.  So, when I found out that she was cruising on RCCL (for the first time!) to Alaska, I couldn’t wait to hear her thoughts about how it compared to DCL. She was kind enough to write a very detailed report of how the two cruise lines compare (for her particular cruise, of course) on pretty much every subject. Here are Jody’s thoughts:

As veteran Disney cruisers, we decided to “cheat” this time and sail on Royal Caribbean to Alaska. This was an extended family vacation with older cousins and a handful of adults, so the published activity options onboard Royal Caribbean were attractive to our larger group – more so than Disney and characters. As a travel agent, this was also my chance to take notes and, well, compare the two cruise lines.

Our ship, Ovation of the Seas , was an exciting opportunity for us – it is slightly larger than the Disney Fantasy & Dream, boasting large windows and spaces to view Alaska’s amazing vistas.  It was launched in February 2016 and sailing its very first season in Alaska from May through September (then heading back to the South Pacific for down-under travels from Auckland to Dusky Sound, September through April).

Before we get to the comparisons, here are some details from our cruise:

We sailed roundtrip from Seattle, which was a wonderful experience! We enjoyed two full days in Seattle visiting Pike Place Market, the iconic Space Needle, Boeing’s Museum of Flight (a real highlight with the visiting Apollo 11 exhibit through 9/2/19), and nibbling on some unforgettable eats… pastries from Peroshky Peroshky (a Russian bakery with a line out the door and sugary scents to die for!), decadent sipping chocolate from JOE, drip coffee from the original Starbucks in Pike Place, seafood and produce fresh from the Market, and more.

Our 7-night cruise itinerary was as follows:

Endicott Arm/Dawes Glacier (cruising day)

Victoria, British Columbia

Seattle

I’ve heard time and again that cruising to Alaska is all about the destination – the unique ports and unforgettable scenery – and not so much about the ship. The destinations we visited were some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, so I believe this to be true.  But, I also think the ship must be taken into account when you’re sailing on it for 7 nights with 3 full days at sea. So, while I will focus on the key differences our family experienced between Disney and Royal Caribbean, I can’t help but share details of our amazing activities in Alaskan and Canadian ports!

The very names of the waterways, port towns and experiences of the Alaska Panhandle (the broad region of islands, mountains and saltwater also known as Southeast Alaska) evoke legend. This is Alaska’s famed Inside Passage , about 500 miles long and 100 miles wide. Branches of the Inside Passage connect waterside communities including Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka, Juneau, Gustavus and Skagway. Fascinating fact: these communities are not connected to each other by roads! Skilled captains carefully navigate vessels of all sizes from fishing boats to our massive cruise ships, challenged by complex island groups along the way. Our cruise focused on this area of Alaska, visiting the ports listed above. Some cruises sail one way North to South or South to North along Alaska’s coastline (typically you fly into Anchorage or Seward, and sometimes Vancouver). And, unless you separately book an amazing multi-night land package of Alaska through your travel agent in addition to your cruise (often called CruiseTours or Adventures by Disney), you will only be seeing the southeast coast/tip of Alaska, not the interior of the state. For many families, the cruise is sufficient due to the budget and time invested.

Quick thoughts on our ports:

Our 3-hr roundtrip Whale Watch with Dolphin Jet Tours was amazing! The amount of information we learned about whales from this all-girl crew and witnessing whales breach to display their huge tails was unforgettable.

SEE Mendenhall Glacier (and if you can hike to walk on it, do it!)

Plan a helicopter ride over multiple glaciers and walk on them!

Tracy’s Crab Shack  is yummy and the line moves fast. Not a fan of crab legs? The crab bisque, mini crab cakes and butter rolls were to die for.

Skagway (my favorite port)

Be sure to walk through downtown Skagway , a 10 min walk from the ship.

Purchase the Skagway Street Car Tour excursion: a captivating, storied tour through town with a colorful guide! This was one of the best 1.5 hrs we spent.

The White Pass Scenic Railway that follows the trail of the historic gold rush through Yukon Valley  in the late 1800s (our train ride was 3 hours roundtrip).

Rent a Jeep and drive up the Klondike Highway to Yukon Territory (bring your passports!) to see breathtaking scenery and wildlife.

Have a beer at one of the breweries dotting the marina.

Endicott Arm/Dawes Glacier

(you do not leave the ship this day – just scenic viewing)

Get up EARLY!  We were coming upon Dawes Glacier just after 8:00 am.

The water has a distinct blue-green cast, easily captured in photos. This is due to glacial sediment deposits and long hours of daylight during the summer feeding tiny organisms called plankton. These, in turn, support increasingly larger organisms up the food chain (eventually humpback whales) in the nutrient-rich waters. The abundance of phytoplankton is what gives the water its blueish-green cast.

Have a good pair of binoculars and a GOOD camera. You’ll see seals in the water (and resting on icebergs), waterfalls, and even mountain goats!

Victoria, British Columbia

Butchart Gardens – Victoria’s main attraction and for good reason – lush, colorful, unbelievably beautiful!

Beacon Hill Children’s Farm – A fun petting zoo for kids, don’t need more than a ½ hour there but super cute and very close to the port.

Parliament Building – A great photo op!

The Empress Hotel for high tea – We didn’t have a chance to do this but is a popular activity in Victoria.

Fisherman’s Wharf – Popular for tourists and locals with snack shacks and unique floating homes.

Victoria’s Chinatown – A real highlight for us visiting historical Fan Tan Alley and enjoying lunch at Bao (bao buns and ramen!)

Now, the question most people are probably most curious about:  How Did Royal Caribbean compare to Disney Cruise Line, in our experience?

As with any review, it’s 100% subjective. It depends on what your priorities are and pretty much how you view the world around you. My notes below are also limited to our experience on the Ovation of the Seas (the only Royal Caribbean ship we’ve sailed to date), along with a Carnival cruise to Central America back in 2003. Having sailed all 4 Disney ships multiple times, I am a HUGE FAN of Disney Cruise Line, and it’s through this lens that I critique. Having not sailed to Alaska on Disney, this isn’t an apples to apples comparison.  I’ve been intrigued for some time by Royal Caribbean’s advertising and travel agent marketing & communications, so I was excited to try something new! Remember this is entirely my opinion, everyone tends to have different experiences, and life is all about trying new things!

NOTE:  As of September 2019, DCL has removed the onboard credit from the onboard booking benefits mentioned above.  Now, the only benefits are a 10% discount on base cruise fare and 10% deposit on cruises of 7+ nights (vs. the standard 20%).

Overall, I can’t say that Disney is “better” than Royal Caribbean, or vice versa. It’s really just DIFFERENT. And isn’t life all about seeing new places and embracing differences?

My family will be booking another Alaskan cruise, and next time we definitely want to visit Sitka and Ketchikan. I would also like to experience Vancouver, British Columbia. Whether we sail Disney, Royal Caribbean again, or even Norwegian Cruise Line, we are excited to be led into territories with unmatched views and exciting experiences.

At the end of the day, Alaska never disappoints.

From Jody’s very first Disney cruise years ago, she was smitten. Disembarking the ship to claim luggage in the port, she put on her sunglasses to hide tears! $50 per person for the whole week for the drinks package is a wonderful deal. I thought it was usually that much per day.

What was the cost difference if you don’t mind me asking? Did you compare prior to booking?

Hi Cristina! I can’t speak for Jody and whether she compared prices or not, but I did a quick comparison between DCL and RCCL prices for Alaska this summer. For the 6/22 sailing on Disney, the prices for a 7 night Alaska cruise from Vancouver, for 2 adults, are $4924 (interior), $6128 (ocean view), and $9180 (verandah). For the 6/21 sailing on RCCL, also a 7 night from Vancouver for 2 adults, the prices are $2550 (interior), $3008 (ocean view), and $5044 (verandah). I hope this helps!

Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are two well-known companies for cruises. Although they both set sail from multiple ports within the United States, that’s about where their similarities end.

Let’s take a look at Disney Cruise versus Royal Caribbean, including the main differences between these two powerhouses.

» Learn more: The best ways to book a cruise

The main difference: Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean

The biggest difference when it comes to Disney versus Royal Caribbean is fleet size. Disney Cruise Line has just five ships, while Royal Caribbean boasts 26 ships in its fleet.

Royal Caribbean also has much larger ships; its Wonder of the Seas craft can accommodate 6,988 passengers. In comparison, the Disney Wish — the biggest ship on Disney’s cruise line — can only hold 4,000 passengers.

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Line

Because Royal Caribbean is a much larger cruise line, it can sail many more routes than Disney Cruise Line. You can find a Royal Caribbean cruise nearly anywhere in the world, including but not limited to:

North America.

The Panama Canal.

South America.

Disney does have quite a few routes, despite its much smaller size. You’ll find destinations including:

The Caribbean.

» Learn more: The pros and cons of cruises

Cabin types

Most cruise lines feature fairly similar cabin types, and Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line are no different. You can expect all the standard cabins, such as interior, oceanview, verandah and suites on both cruise lines.

However, Royal Caribbean has done its best to differentiate itself with interior rooms featuring windows to indoor spaces. Some of its ships also include virtual balconies, which operate gigantic digital screens to show outdoor views in every room.

Disney Cruise Line, meanwhile, is a little different in that all its rooms are built to accommodate families. You’ll find group-friendly features such as curtained room dividers. You’ll also be able to enjoy split bathrooms; these include a toilet and sink in one room and a shower and sink in another.

Not sure whether to take a Disney Cruise or one on Royal Caribbean? You’ll certainly want to consider the amenities that each cruise line offers. Again, you can expect to enjoy certain standard amenities when cruising on either of these lines. This includes daily activities, dedicated children's areas, live entertainment, pools, spas and fitness centers.

However, you can find much more on these ships. Royal Caribbean’s ships can accommodate many more activities, so you’ll find things such as:

Indoor skydiving

Multiple water slides.

Rock wall climbing.

Wave pools.

Zip lining.

Although smaller, Disney Cruise Line’s ships still provide plenty to do. This can include:

Broadway-quality shows.

Character meet and greets.

Movie screenings

Water slides and more.

The biggest enticement here is that Disney’s ships all offer Disney-branded entertainment, so if you’re a fan of, say, "Frozen," "The Lion King" or Mickey Mouse, you’ll have a blast on a Disney cruise.

Cruises generally aren’t all-inclusive so it’s definitely something you’ll want to consider in a comparison of a Royal Caribbean cruise and a Disney cruise. When onboard, your food is included, as is entertainment, access to the pools and many other activities.

However, there are a few differences in inclusions between these two cruise lines.

First, those sailing on a Disney Cruise Line ship will not need to pay extra if they’d like to drink soda, as soft drinks are included on these cruises. This is not the case for Royal Caribbean; if you’d like to have soda, you’ll need to pay or purchase a soda package.

Second, Disney cruises offer complimentary in-room dining. This is available 24/7 and even includes unlimited Mickey ice cream bars sent to your room. While Royal Caribbean also offers 24/7 room service, it charges a fee for delivery.

» Learn more: Are cruises all-inclusive?

Pricing is probably where the Disney-versus-Royal Caribbean breakdown is most noticeable. Disney cruises are significantly more expensive than Royal Caribbean ones.

For example, a three-night cruise from Miami to the Bahamas on Royal Caribbean will cost as little as $770.48 for two people.

On Disney, meanwhile, a three-night cruise departing from Port Canaveral and heading to the Bahamas is a minimum of $1,993. That’s more than twice as much as a Royal Caribbean cruise.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Both Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line offer packages for purchase for your cruise. If you’re interested in Wi-Fi , you’ll be able to purchase a package on either cruise line. The cost is going to vary based on the speed you choose and how long you’re sailing.

Royal Caribbean also offers the ability to purchase a drink package that includes alcohol. This means you’ll be able to have as many alcoholic drinks as you’d like, including wine, beer and liquor.

While Disney does allow you to buy a reusable beer mug that grants you discounted refills, there’s no beverage package available for guests. This is true for both alcohol and specialty drinks such as smoothies; these are charged on a per-item basis.

If you’re debating Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Line

While it's true that both Disney and Royal Caribbean offer cruises, they’re fairly different overall.

Royal Caribbean has larger ships, more amenities, and more cruises available.

Disney Cruise Line, meanwhile, has a much smaller fleet that carries fewer passengers. But you’ll still find a wide variety of sailings across the globe.

You can expect to pay more for a Disney Cruise than Royal Caribbean, but you’ll also be able to enjoy free unlimited sodas and room service.

Important to know :

When it comes to destinations,  Disney Cruise Line   vs   Royal Caribbean both whisk travelers away on journeys filled with wonder and excitement. Each cruise line has a wonderful variety of routes that cater to any traveler’s dream. Each company also has its own private island. Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay offers diverse activities, including hot air balloon rides and a water park! Disney Cruise Line’s island, Castaway Cay , is an idyllic paradise exclusively for Disney cruisers. This serene haven is often cited as a pinnacle experience, offering families a unique blend of Disney magic and tropical bliss. We have to give this one to the Disney Cruise Line for their slightly more expansive destination list. The only downside of DCL’s routes is the missing stops in Greece and Italy in comparison to Royal Caribbean.

It’s almost impossible to compare the price on a cruise. Countless factors go into how much a cruise costs. Such as destination, duration, cabin type, and how many people are in your party. Our examples above are for similar cruises for each company! But in terms of pricing, this is where the contrast between a Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean Cruise Line  will be the most noticeable. As you can see in our pricing example above, Disney is more expensive than Royal Caribbean. But it doesn’t stop there; Disney Cruise Line is more expensive than almost every other cruise line out there! While it doesn’t make the top three most expensive cruises, it most certainly loses in the price factor when comparing these two popular cruise lines.

When weighing Disney Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , it’s vital to consider the inclusions, as cruises aren’t typically all-inclusive. Both offer essentials like meals, entertainment, and pool access. A standout difference is in beverages; Disney Cruise Line includes free soda, unlike Royal Caribbean, where soda requires an extra fee or a soda package. Additionally, Disney cruises excel with complimentary 24/7 in-room dining, complete with my personal favorite perk: unlimited Mickey Premium ice cream bars! In contrast, Royal Caribbean provides 24/7 room service but charges a delivery fee. These distinctions are crucial in the Royal Caribbean vs Disney Cruise debate, especially for families prioritizing convenience and value.

In the Disney Cruise Line vs Royal Caribbean comparison, both offer purchasable Wi-Fi packages, with costs varying by speed and cruise length. A key difference is Royal Caribbean’s inclusive alcoholic drink package, allowing guests unlimited access to wine, beer, and spirits. Contrastingly, Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer a similar beverage package; instead, they have a unique reusable beer mug for discounted refills. For alcohol and specialty drinks like smoothies, Disney Cruise Line charges per item. This distinction is crucial for those considering the Disney vs Royal Caribbean choice, especially if inclusive drink options are a priority.

The website has the essential booking links displayed promptly on the home page, but for any detailed information, you have to dig in the search bar. This diversity in dining is a hallmark of the Royal Caribbean Disney Cruise comparison, ensuring that every guest’s palate is well catered to on their sea voyage.

The allure of exclusive private islands is a significant highlight when choosing a cruise line. Both cruise lines offer their guests this unique experience but in distinctively different styles. This private island delivers an immersive Disney experience, complete with character greetings that delight both young and old. The island’s meticulously themed environments transport guests into a storybook paradise. In contrast, while Royal Caribbean also offers private island experiences, they focus more on relaxation and island activities rather than themes, a factor to consider in the R oyal Caribbean Disney cruise decision. However, the private islands of the Royal Caribbean offer a wider array of activities and beaches to enjoy. This distinction in private island experiences is a key element in choosing between Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise: The Major Differences

Posted on Published: 04/22/2024

If you’ve been a frequent reader here, you know that I am an avid cruiser on the Disney Cruise Line. I love their beautiful ships and fantastic service and have been happy on every single sailing I’ve done. We’ve reviewed all of their ships here and we’ve always had a positive experience.

However, this past winter break, my family sailed on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and also really loved it. Many people have asked for a Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise comparison so they can choose the best option for their family.

We have loved our experience on both cruise lines, and I plan to travel on both in the future. But there are some discrete differences that are good to know, and you are likely to have a different experience on each line. Both are great for a family vacation, and both are great cruise lines for young adults and teens.

Disclosure: I’ve been on cruises on both lines at no/discounted cost, and have also paid my own way on both. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you.

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise: The Most Major Differences

Number of ships on royal caribbean vs. disney cruise..

There are currently five Disney Cruise ships in service, with an additional ship, the Disney Wish, which began its inaugural season in 2022. These five cruise ships are in three different classes- with the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder being the two smaller ships and the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy being the larger two ships.

The Disney Wish is a new class – the Triton class. An additional two ships in the same class as the Disney Wish have been ordered for the future.

Royal Caribbean has twenty-seven ships in service, with more announced (including three in the new Icon class). There are several different classes – including the Oasis, Freedom, Quantum, Radiance, Voyager, and Vision Classes.

Because of the larger number of Royal Caribbean ships, you are likely to find an itinerary with ports of call that work for your busy schedule. Royal Caribbean sails in many places that Disney Cruise Line doesn’t, including ports in Asia.

With the smaller number of ships and classes on the Disney Cruise Line, there is a sense of familiarity when sailing. Every time I step onto a DCL ship, I feel comfortable, almost like going home.

On the other hand, Royal Caribbean ships, with their large fleet, vary by class and have exciting, active entrances. I don’t feel the sentimentality but do get excited to explore the ship. There are some similarities among the ships but also many differences.

Disney Cruise Line at Castaway Cay

For many families, this is the most important factor. Cruises can be expensive. In general, I’ve found that the base rate on the Disney Cruise Line tends to be higher than a similar-length cruise on Royal Caribbean.

However, you’ll want to look at the inclusions. Some things are included in the Disney Cruise Line that isn’t included in Royal Caribbean . These include soft drinks and room service fees (for delivery of everything except for continental breakfast).

Pink frozen Labadoozie drink held in front of a beach with chairs, umbrellas, and palm trees.

Drink Packages

Both cruise lines offer complimentary basic beverages, including tap water, coffee and tea (excluding premium coffee), and standard juices. Other beverages are available a la carte, and each cruise line has different beverage purchase options.

On Royal Caribbean, there are several beverage packages available for purchase in advance or once you are on board (you can usually save money by purchasing in advance). The options include the Deluxe Beverage Package, the Refreshment Package, and the Soda Package. Drinks at the Starbucks locations on the ships (for those with a Starbucks) are not included in any of the packages.

Disney Cruise Line doesn’t have a package that includes all alcoholic drinks. They do, however, offer standard and premium wine packages .

Beer packages are also offered. They also have an alcoholic and nonalcoholic drink of the day which is offered at a lower price.

Keep in mind that soft drinks are included in a Disney Cruise, so you won’t have to pay separately for these. Premium coffees are also offered on Disney Cruise Line for an additional fee.

Bumper cars indoors

Both cruise lines have plenty of activities to keep you busy while you are at sea. The activities that you’ll experience on these lines vary, however.

The Disney Cruise Line ships have lots of Disney magic, as you’d expect. You’ll see Disney characters, Disney entertainment, and Disney movies.

There are also fun deck activities, including pools, a splash area for young kids, a play area, water slides, hot tubs, a sports deck (with a basketball court), and outdoor movies.

If you are sailing on Disney Magic, you’ll get an opportunity to ride the AquaDunk, while the Disney Dream and Fantasy offer the AquaDuck. The Disney Wish offers a new attraction called the AquaMouse.

Royal Caribbean ships are filled with fun activities, but these vary by ship. For instance, on the Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas , different experiences include an iFly, a climbing wall, a FlowRider, a North Star observation capsule, and bumper cars.

On the Wonder of the Seas , you’ll see a FlowRider, two rock walls, a carousel, Ultimate Abyss slides, mini golf, zip lining, ice skating, and a sports deck. Be sure to check the specific activities on the ship you are booking because they do vary.

If you are interested in gaming, both cruise lines offer bingo. However, the Disney Cruise Line ships do not offer casinos, while the Royal Caribbean ships do.

Entertainment

All of the cruise ship entertainment that I’ve seen on both cruise lines has always been top-notch. Disney Cruise Line offers Broadway-style musicals in the Walt Disney Theater. On longer sailings, there are often other entertainers, like magicians and ventriloquists, who perform there.

You can also see first-run movies from Disney-owned studios in the onboard theater. Singers and other musicians perform at various venues across the ships, throughout the day.

There are also other entertainment options on the Disney Cruise Line ships, including animation classes, trivia, game shows, and more. The schedule for these can be found in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app.

Royal Caribbean also boasts fantastic onboard entertainment. Their shows showcase wonderful talent but aren’t specifically family-friendly.

They also have some very unique venues, including an ice-skating rink, an aqua theater, and smaller theaters like Two70. Keep in mind that these venues do vary by ship. Like on DCL, performers can be seen in bars and other venues throughout the day.

They also offer karaoke, game shows, trivia, laser tag, and other programming each day. There’s no lack of entertainment. I’ve found that the shows on Royal Caribbean are especially unique, innovative, and enjoyable, and often have great special effects.

Restaurants

Disney Cruise Line offers rotational dining. Each night, you’ll visit a different restaurant of the three options, and your serving team travels with you.

I’ve always loved this because you never get tired of the restaurant, and it’s great to have the same team traveling with you, especially if you have dietary restrictions. The restaurants are heavily themed, often with entertainment and typical Disney magic. For longer cruises, you’ll visit the same restaurants again, in the same rotation.

There are two premium restaurant options on the Disney ships. Remy and Palo are adult-only restaurants that are available on the Disney Fantasy and the Disney Dream , while the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder only offer Palo. The Disney Wish has Palo and a new restaurant called Enchante. These are offered for an additional fee.

In addition to the dining rooms and restaurants, there are lots of quick-service options available throughout the ships. Complimentary room service is also available.

Royal Caribbean typically offers one main dining room, although some ships have two. There are two seatings, as well as “My Time Dining”. You’ll have the same servers in the main dining room throughout the cruise.

Unlike DCL, Royal Caribbean ships offer many specialty restaurants that are not included in your cruise fare. These specialty restaurants include varied options such as Johnny Rockets, Izumi Sushi and Tepanyaki, Chops Grille, and Hooked Seafood (they vary by ship) and they can be a great add-on to your cruise.

Goofy in pharaoh costume on board the Disney Dream

Themed Cruises

Unlike Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line offers themed cruises throughout the year. These can make your cruise experience even more exciting, with special events, decor, and characters. Some of these included:

  • Halloween on the High Seas
  • Marvel Day at Sea
  • Pixar Day at Sea
  • Very Merrytime Cruise

If your cruise is one of these special-themed cruises, it will be clearly labeled when you book.

Laundry Facilities

I generally don’t like to do chores on my family vacations, but sometimes I do have to wash clothes. Disney Cruise Line has several self-service laundry facilities onboard.

There is an additional fee for using them, but they are very easy to use and you’ll get an alert on your app when the machine stops.

Royal Caribbean doesn’t have any self-service facilities. However, there is a full-service laundry option if you need clothes to be cleaned during your trip. Sometimes, there is a promotion where you’ll receive a bag in your stateroom, and everything that fits in the bag is washed for one flat fee.

Private Islands

A private island or island resort can be one of the best cruise ship excursions. Both Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line offer these experiences.

Disney Cruise Line’s Caribbean and Bahamian itineraries typically stop once at Disney’s Castaway Cay, a private island in the Bahamas. Castaway Cay is stunningly beautiful, with excursions, character interactions, beaches, a kids’ club area, and much more.

It’s usually my favorite stop on the Disney Cruise Line. There’s a new private destination in the works, also in the Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean has two private island/resort areas with more on the way. Perfect Day at CocoCay is a newly-renovated Bahamian Island offering a water park, hot air balloon, private beach club, excursions, and more. It has something for everyone, and after several trips, there are still so many things I haven’t explored there.

In addition to Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean also has a private resort area in Labadee , Haiti. Labadee offers an inflatable water park, an alpine mountain coaster, an overwater zip line, along with beautiful beaches. Both of these private properties are offered on select, but not all sailings in the Caribbean.

Kids’ Clubs

If you are traveling with children, kids’ clubs may be a big part of your cruise ship experience. Both cruise lines offer kids’ clubs with great programming.

On Royal Caribbean, ships offer the Adventure Ocean Club – which is split into babies, juniors, and kids. The Adventure Ocean Club is free and offers “edutainment” programming for younger kids, including talent shows, art programming, science projects, and much more. There’s also an area dedicated specifically to teens.

The Disney Cruise Line offers the Oceaneer Club and Lab. These innovative kids clubs have some fantastic theming and activities, including Star Wars and Toy Story-themed areas.

Kids have so many different areas to play in. Disney Cruise Line also offers dedicated teen and tween clubs along with their youth clubs.

Both Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line offer paid WiFi access. Royal Caribbean has two levels of internet access- a standard and one that allows steaming and is paid by the day.

Disney’s internet access has changed from a data-based fee to a flat fee. There are several tiers of Disney Cruise Line WiFi offered .

Both cruise lines offer apps that are free to use while on the ships. Disney’s app allows for free messaging to others on the ship, while Royal Caribbean charges a nominal fee for that service (although they’ve recently been waiving that fee). Disney Cruise Line also offers complimentary iMessage access for all guests on the ships.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard” and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

The Best Cruise Lines

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above... Continued from above... -->

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

10 Do’s and Don’ts for your Disney Alaska Cruise

It’s almost time for Disney Cruise Line’s yearly Alaska sailings!  In fact, it’s almost time for Disney to release their 2020 Alaska sailings, and I’m guessing several of you are thinking about booking.  I’ve done Disney cruises all over the world, and Alaska will always be one of my favorites.  It’s amazing.  It is, however, a very different experience than a typical Caribbean cruise.  Here are some tips that will help you prepare!

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

2. Don’t Count on an Upgrade in Port – You’ve heard me say before that there are often great upgrades at steep discounts available in port. In Alaska, they are fewer and farther between. It’s all about that view.  Everyone wants one, and they are gone by boarding day.  I’m not saying it’s impossible, so get to the port early and try!  What I am saying, is book a room you will be happy with.  If you aren’t going to be happy in an inside room, don’t book it, hoping for an upgrade.  Book what you will be happy with.  If there are upgrades available – woohoo!  Bonus!

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

6. Do Be Prepared to Enter Canada – An interesting law that you may need to be aware of is a Canadian law that will not allow anyone with a felony to cross their border, no matter how long ago it occurred. Under Canadian law, a DUI is a felony. If you do not clear some legal hurdles beforehand , you can and will be denied entry.  Also, for anyone wondering what kind of proof of citizenship is needed for an Alaskan cruise, Disney spells it all out right here for you.  Easiest answer – get a passport.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

8. Don’t be Frightened off by Expensive Flights to Vancouver – There are more options to get to Vancouver than you think! Some of you may live close enough to drive, but most will probably fly. My family tends to avoid using airline miles for overseas flights because it takes so gosh darn many of them.  The good news about Canada, is that with many airlines, it takes the same amount of miles to fly there as it does to fly domestically within the US.  You can also consider flying into Seattle.  It’s possible to rent a car and drive to Vancouver from there, but the train is a fun option as well.  Look at all your options before making your decision!

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Bonus – Don’t Worry About Missing Glacier Bay.  Disney gets a bad rap for not visiting Glacier Bay on its itineraries.  I’ve been there, and Glacier Bay is stunning, amazing.  The good news is – so is Endicott Arm.  Or Tracey Arm, or whatever arm Disney will sail through.  You can’t see all the glaciers in Alaska on any single itinerary, but you’ll see plenty with Disney.  And you will be amazed by the beauty.  I’m already excited for you!

Do any other Alaska cruisers have tips?  Or questions?

Disney’s website mentions pools on the ship for the Alaska sailings. Given how you describe the weather here, it doesn’t seem like I should plan on any swimming. What is Disney talking about?

Actually, I think you should absolutely pack swimsuits! The pools are heated to a great temperature, and there are always hot tubs. We definitely swim in Alaska. 🙂

Good to know!!

Any water slides?

Just the Twist & Spout for kids. That one would probably be too cold for me (too much of your body is out of the water), but kids may!

My kids are anti-cold splashing too 🙂

I second all of these suggestions! Truly the most amazingly beautiful scenery we’ve ever seen. I booked most of our excursions directly, which saved a lot of $$$. Most of the time, the Disney Excursion group actually joined us on the very same outing.

It is beautiful, isn’t it? And you are right! Disney often uses the same tour operators that you can book directly with!

Would you recommend the seven day with Icy Strait Points or without?

My philosophy on ports is – the more the better. If you ever decide you don’t want to get off, you can always make that your own “sea day”. But I’d recommend getting off everywhere for at least an hour or two! 🙂

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is a leading cruise operator known for its innovative ships and exhilarating onboard experiences. From the moment you embark on one of their state-of-the-art vessels, you’ll be swept away into a world of adventure, excitement, and relaxation. Royal Caribbean’s commitment to providing an extraordinary vacation is evident in its diverse range of activities and immersive experiences, ensuring that each day is filled with unforgettable memories for every guest.

Aboard a Royal Caribbean Cruise, there’s no shortage of opportunities to delight and entertain passengers of all ages. Beyond the array of onboard entertainment and activities, guests can expect spacious, comfortable staterooms complete with top-notch service and mesmerizing ocean views.

Comparing Disney Cruises and Royal Caribbean Cruises

When choosing between Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean for your next vacation, it’s crucial to understand the key differences between these two renowned cruise lines. We’ve prepared a comprehensive comparison of their fleets, pricing, itineraries, destinations, activities, dining, suitability for kids and adults, and overall experience to help you make an informed decision.

Disney Cruise Line operates a smaller, more intimate fleet of  five ships : Disney Magic , Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , Disney Wish , and Disney Wonder . Each ship is designed with the signature Disney touch, creating a magical and immersive atmosphere for guests of all ages. On the other hand, Royal Caribbean boasts a larger and more diverse fleet of  27 ships , offering a vast range of amenities, experiences, and styles to cater to different tastes and preferences.

Disney Cruise Line is often regarded as a more premium experience than Royal Caribbean, resulting in higher Disney Cruise costs per person . For example, we compared prices for two nearly identical cruises: an interior stateroom on a 3-night Bahamian cruise sailing from Port Canaveral on July 7, 2023, with stops at Nassau and the cruise line’s private island, Disney’s Castaway Cay. Aboard the brand new Disney Wish , the cost per person per night was around $480, while on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas, the cost was about $395 per person per night.

It’s important to consider the inclusions in the price of each cruise line when comparing costs, as they add value to your vacation experience. Disney Cruise fares include a wide array of dining options, entertainment, and activities for all age groups. On the other hand, Royal Caribbean’s pricing also encompasses various amenities, including onboard activities, entertainment, and dining choices, which contribute to the overall value of their cruise offerings.

To secure the best pricing for Disney Cruises or Royal Caribbean cruises, consider using an experienced and highly-rated travel agency like The Vacationeer . They can answer questions, provide advice, help find the perfect itinerary, and ensure you get the best pricing available for either cruise line. As a Diamond-Level Disney Authorized Vacation Planner, they can offer top-notch service and competitive prices, including up to $1000 in Disney cruise onboard credit . Contact them today for more information – their expert services are free of charge!

Itineraries

Both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean offer short and long-term trips, sailing from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale , with cruise durations ranging from three to eleven days and occasional extended itineraries exceeding eleven days. Each cruise line provides a unique selection of routes and stops, so it’s essential to consider your desired destinations when choosing the right option for your vacation.

Moreover, this will determine the necessary travel documentation, such as whether you need a passport for a Disney Cruise or a Royal Caribbean cruise. Being aware of the destinations for your chosen cruise is vital to have all the required documents, including passports, visas, and vaccination certificates, depending on the locations visited. Work with The Vacationeer to ensure a seamless process from start to finish.

Destinations

Disney Cruise Line primarily focuses on popular and family-friendly destinations, including the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Alaska , Hawaii , and Europe . In recent years, Disney has expanded its offerings to encompass more exotic locations such as Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, Disney Cruise Line guests have access to exclusive destinations like Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island , where they can immerse themselves in a tropical paradise infused with Disney magic.

In contrast, Royal Caribbean offers a more extensive range of destinations, catering to various interests and preferences. Their itineraries cover not only the popular cruise spots but also more remote and exotic locales, such as Asia, the South Pacific, the Middle East, and South America. This diverse selection of destinations provides seasoned and adventurous cruisers with a wide array of unique experiences and opportunities to explore different cultures around the world.

Disney Cruise Line is renowned for its family-oriented activities and immersive Disney-themed experiences. Onboard, guests can enjoy character meet-and-greets, Broadway-style shows, themed deck parties, and various interactive experiences, such as themed trivia, scavenger hunts, and animation workshops. Disney Cruise Line also offers a wide range of age-appropriate activities for children, including kids’ clubs, teen lounges, and designated spaces for adults to relax and unwind.

The activities are designed to appeal to the Disney enthusiast, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression on guests of all ages.

Alternatively, Royal Caribbean is known for its extensive array of activities that cater to both thrill-seekers and those looking for more leisurely pursuits. Their ships boast state-of-the-art features, such as surf simulators, zip lines, rock-climbing walls, and ice-skating rinks, providing an adrenaline rush for the adventurous. Additionally, Royal Caribbean offers more traditional cruise activities, including poolside relaxation, spa treatments, and fitness classes.

Guests can also enjoy various entertainment options, such as live music, Broadway-style shows, and comedy performances. With a broad selection of activities, Royal Caribbean appeals to a wider range of interests and preferences, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Dining on both Disney and Royal Caribbean cruises is designed to cater to a variety of tastes and preferences, with options ranging from casual bites to upscale, fine dining establishments. Disney Cruise Line features a distinctive rotational dining system that lets guests enjoy multiple themed dining experiences during their voyage, including character meals that captivate younger travelers.

Some of Disney Cruise Line’s notable restaurants include Animator’s Palate, Enchanted Garden, and adult-exclusive dining options such as Palo and Remy, which offer sophisticated dining experiences. In addition, Disney is known for its excellent food quality and presentation, ensuring that every meal is a memorable one.

On the other hand, Royal Caribbean offers an even more extensive selection of culinary choices, with an impressive array of onboard dining venues, including partnerships with celebrity chefs and specialty restaurants that serve a wide range of international cuisines. From sushi to Italian, guests can indulge in diverse culinary experiences throughout their journey.

Royal Caribbean also provides flexible dining options, such as My Time Dining, which allows guests to choose their preferred dining time and seating arrangements, making it a convenient choice for travelers seeking variety and flexibility in their dining experience.

Best for Kids: Disney Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean Cruise

Disney Cruise Line is the undisputed leader when it comes to catering to children, offering age-specific kids’ clubs, character interactions, and entertainment that focuses on creating a magical experience for younger guests. Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab provide a vast range of activities and themed play areas featuring favorite characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, ensuring children of all ages are engaged and entertained. Additionally, Disney Cruise Line offers kids-only events, such as themed dance parties, scavenger hunts, and interactive shows that immerse them in the world of Disney.

While Royal Caribbean also offers kids’ clubs, family-friendly activities, and dedicated spaces for teenagers, such as the Adventure Ocean program and teen lounges, the cruise line’s offerings cater to a broader age range, and the focus is not solely on younger children. Disney’s emphasis on enchanting experiences and the familiarity of beloved characters make it the top choice for families with younger children who want to be fully immersed in the magic of Disney throughout their cruise experience. There is no doubt that Disney Cruise Line is the best cruise line for kids !

Best for Adults: Disney Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean Cruise

For adults seeking a diverse array of onboard experiences, dining options, adventurous activities, and a more extensive range of nightlife and entertainment choices, Royal Caribbean may be the more appealing option. The cruise line’s ships feature numerous bars, lounges, and clubs, providing a wide variety of atmospheres and experiences to suit different tastes. In addition, Royal Caribbean offers an impressive array of entertainment options, such as Broadway-style shows, live music, comedy clubs, and even outdoor movie nights under the stars.

While Disney Cruise Line also offers adult-only areas, lounges, and entertainment, including upscale dining options and exclusive adult-only sections on their ships, Royal Caribbean provides a broader variety of options that cater to a wider range of preferences and interests. Furthermore, Royal Caribbean’s itineraries include more exotic and remote destinations, such as Asia, the Middle East, and South America, which may be more appealing to adults seeking unique and culturally enriching travel experiences. This makes Royal Caribbean the best choice for adults who want to combine the excitement of a cruise vacation with the opportunity to explore new and diverse locations.

Best For Families: Disney Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean Cruise

Selecting the ideal cruise for your family vacation involves careful consideration of various factors, including your budget, desired destination, preferred activity level, and the interests of each family member. For instance, if you’re seeking a kid-friendly experience infused with that extra touch of Disney magic, a Disney Cruise is likely your best bet. Many people consider Disney Cruise Line the top choice for families with children, thanks to its captivating character interactions, enchanting entertainment, and age-specific kids’ clubs.

Conversely, if your family is in search of a more adventurous and diverse experience with a broader range of destinations, including exotic and remote locations, a Royal Caribbean cruise might be the better option. Royal Caribbean’s extensive array of onboard activities, such as rock climbing, zip-lining, and surfing simulators, appeals to thrill-seekers and active families. Additionally, their wide variety of dining options and partnerships with celebrity chefs cater to diverse culinary preferences, ensuring that there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

When choosing between Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean for your family vacation, take the time to assess the specific interests and preferences of each family member, as well as your overall vacation goals. You may want to involve your family in the decision-making process to ensure everyone’s needs and desires are taken into account. By carefully evaluating these factors and considering the unique offerings of each cruise line, you can confidently choose the perfect cruise experience that will delight your entire family and create cherished memories to last a lifetime.

Best Overall: Disney Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean Cruise

Deciding between Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean ultimately hinges on your priorities, preferences, and expectations for your vacation. Both cruise lines provide exceptional experiences for cruisers of all ages but with distinct differences in fleet size, pricing, itineraries, destinations, activities, and dining options.

If your heart is set on a family-centric experience, complete with the enchanting ambiance of Disney-themed entertainment and a strong focus on creating lasting memories, Disney Cruise Line is likely the better option. Renowned for its magical atmosphere, captivating entertainment, exclusive destinations, and family-friendly focus, Disney Cruise Line is perfect for families with younger children or die-hard Disney fans.

On the other hand, if you’re in search of a more diverse range of activities, dining options, and destinations, with choices that cater to both families and adults, Royal Caribbean may prove to be the more suitable choice. As a luxury cruise line, Royal Caribbean offers a more standard type of cruise experience while still providing a wealth of upscale amenities and activities. With a broader selection of destinations, including exotic and remote locations, Royal Caribbean can be an excellent option for well-traveled families or those looking for a more adventurous and varied cruise experience.

Final Thoughts

To choose between these two cruise lines, take into account your budget, the destinations you want to explore, the type of activities you prefer, and the overall atmosphere you desire during your vacation. Additionally, consider the age range and interests of your travel companions. It’s essential to research the itineraries, onboard activities, and accommodations offered by each cruise line, as well as read reviews from fellow travelers. It’s always wise to consult with a travel agent specializing in cruises to gather further insights and recommendations. By carefully weighing these factors, you can confidently select the cruise line that best matches your needs and preferences. This will ensure an unforgettable and enjoyable cruise adventure for everyone involved!

Disney Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean; We’ll Help You Decide

Thinking about a cruise for your honeymoon or next vacation? Royal Caribbean and Disney are two of the most popular cruise lines around, and although they share some similarities, there are some characteristics that set them apart.

If you’re trying to decide between a Royal Caribbean or Disney cruise, it will depend on the kind of experience you’re looking for. In this article, we’ll compare Royal Caribbean vs. Disney cruises to help you choose which one is best for you.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Overview

Royal Caribbean is known for their massive cruise ships and variety of exciting activities. With some of the largest cruise ships around, there’s plenty of deck space for passengers who want to simply lay back and enjoy the sun, while thrill-seekers will have no shortage of adrenaline-pumping entertainment like waterslides and rock-climbing walls.

There’s something for everyone on a Royal Caribbean cruise, from family-friendly dining, activity, and entertainment options to plenty of upscale restaurants, bars, and nightclubs for young couples and singles.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Royal Caribbean has ports all around the world, but its most popular destinations are in the Caribbean and Alaska . Cruise lengths range from 2 nights to a 274-night ultimate world cruise. They have a fleet size of 24 ships, and their smallest ship can accommodate 2000 people while the largest ship can hold 5700 passengers and crew.

In contrast, Disney’s fleet consists of only 5 ships. The smallest ship, the Magic, can hold 2713 passengers. The Wish, Disney’s newest and largest ship, made its debut in 2022 and can hold 4000 passengers. Voyages are typically between 2 and 14 nights long, depending on the destination.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney’s private island in The Bahamas , Castaway Cay, is an oasis reserved exclusively for Disney passengers sailing in the Caribbean. It features family-friendly beaches as well as an area for adults, a snorkeling lagoon, shopping, boat rentals, eateries, and much more.

Disney has itineraries in the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, and Mexico. In 2023 Disney announced limited-time sailing from Australia and New Zealand starting in October, and 2025 will see Disney’s 7th ship make its homeport in Singapore.

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Dining

Royal Caribbean and Disney cruises both offer a range of dining experiences, from grab-n-go nooks to fine dining. In terms of choice, Royal Caribbean trumps Disney cruises. In addition to Royal Caribbean’s 3 complimentary dining options, you can find dozens of specialty restaurants throughout the ship.

Royal Caribbean’s largest ship, Symphony of the Sea, boasts a whopping 20 eateries. You can choose from 3 dining plans on your cruise, including the ability to try somewhere new every night with an unlimited dining option.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

The signature food options onboard Disney cruises are pretty standard throughout their entire fleet.  There are 3 restaurants on board plus snack and meal stands scattered around the deck.

Most of it is included, but items like alcohol, specialty coffees, and adult-only dining areas come at an additional charge.

Disney uses a unique rotational dining system to ensure that each passenger gets a chance to try all three of their themed restaurants. Passengers are assigned a table number and set schedule when they check in and rotate to different restaurants each night. Servers rotate with the tables, so you’ll get to know your tablemates and your server will get to know your preferences as the cruise carries on.

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Cabins

Royal Caribbean’s cabins and suites are known for being some of the most luxurious in the cruise world. They have cabins for all kinds of budgets and even their smallest staterooms don’t skimp on the indulgence. The most coveted accommodation is the balcony cabin. The 180- square-foot space features a king bed or two twin beds, a sofa, and a workspace.

Suites on Royal Caribbean ships are attractive, and there’s a wide range of categories to choose from. The Royal Loft Suites are two decks high and feature a massive sitting area and floor-to-ceiling windows. Family Suites are colorful and sunny and have cool features like giant games and Lego walls.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

There are 4 categories of Disney staterooms and 10 different types of staterooms within those categories to choose from. Most of the cabins aboard Disney cruises are designed with families or groups in mind.

Disney staterooms are noticeably larger than Royal Caribbean’s staterooms and those of other cruise lines like Norwegian . Disney rooms also have lots of extra storage spaces built right into the room, and extra large bathrooms with partitions to make getting the kids ready much easier.

Couples will be most comfortable in a Verandah stateroom that comes with a view of the ocean and a small balcony that’s large enough for a couple of chairs. For families traveling with kids, the Concierge Stateroom has enough space for 6 or 7 passengers and features a separate bedroom with a private balcony plus a lounge area with a minibar.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Activities and Entertainment

Royal Caribbean is known for offering some of the most varied and exciting activities on board any cruise ship. Extreme sports enthusiasts will love Royal Caribbean’s surf and skydiving simulators, rock climbing walls, zip lines, bumper cars , towering waterslides, and ice skating rinks. Evening entertainment options include live bands, Broadway productions, family-friendly performances, dance lessons, trivia nights, and a nightclub.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

While Royal Caribbean has plenty of kid-friendly entertainment options, they obviously can’t hold a candle to a Disney cruise. Everything on board a Disney cruise ship is designed with kids in mind. Kids will get a chance to meet their favorite characters at Disney’s signature sail-away dance party, hosted on the first night of every Disney cruise.

Throughout the trip they’ll be able to catch live productions of original Disney shows; watch a firework show light up the night sky; take part in lots of fun daily activities in the Kids, Tween, and Teen Clubs; and zip down waterslides into refreshing swimming pools. Older kids will love Goofy’s Sports Deck, found on 4 of Disney’s ships, which has mini-golf, a basketball court, obstacle courses, and virtual sports simulators.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

There’s also plenty for adults to do onboard Disney cruises. There’s a fitness center, spa, and salon on each ship, and the Wide World of Sports Deck is always open for a game of basketball. During the evening, go dancing or catch a show at Disney’s nightclubs and lounges, or enjoy a quiet, romantic meal at Remy or Palo. Each ship also has an adult-only section of the pool deck.

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Cost

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Disney cruises are very expensive compared to other cruises. On a Disney cruise, you’re not just paying for the trip, you’re paying for the entire Disney experience. The characters, children-focused business model, extra-large staterooms, and visits to Disney’s own private island all drive up the cost. Not to only that, the world-class entertainment that Disney is known for requires the best performers and high-end special effects technology.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

So many variables can affect the cost of a Disney cruise that it’s hard to estimate an average cost, but expect to pay upwards of $1000 per couple, and even more if you have kids. Keep in mind that Disney cruises don’t offer any beverage packages, so you’ll likely end up spending much more than you anticipated if you plan to drink alcoholic beverages on your Disney cruise (unless you’re planning to try to sneak alcohol onto your cruise ).

Royal Caribbean cruises can be quite costly as well, averaging around $150 – $250 per person per night. Although Royal Caribbean cruises aren’t all-inclusive , you can purchase add-ons like Royal Caribbean drink packages ahead of time so it’s easier to budget and you don’t need to worry about surprise expenses.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Royal Caribbean vs. Disney Cruise Passengers

Royal Caribbean cruises offer plenty for couples, singles, solo travelers, retirees, and families with kids of all ages. There truly is something for everyone and you’re bound to see passengers from every demographic on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

While Disney cruises are popular among families with young children, older kids and teenagers might feel a little too mature for some of the entertainment options. Also, adult-only areas and activities on Disney cruises come at an added cost, so couples looking for some romance might be better suited on a cruise geared toward adults .

Either cruise line would be great if you’re traveling with kids, but if you’re on an adults-only trip, Royal Caribbean is probably the better option.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney Cruise vs. Royal Caribbean – We’re Helping You Decide

By Kim LaPaglia Leave a Comment

Have you been dreaming about a vacation on the high seas? Are you new to cruising or looking for a new cruise line? Well, we’re going to help you decide between sailing with Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean .

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney Wish

We’re breaking down the similarities and difference between these cruise lines. And when we’re done, we hope you’ll be able to choose the cruise that is best for your family. Perhaps, you’re looking for the best cruise for a first-timer? Or looking for a ship that boasts the biggest rooms?

Realistically, cost is likely a huge factor . Are you really making the BEST choice if you go with the Disney Cruise Line (DCL) instead of a less expensive cruise line such as Royal Caribbean (RC)? We’ll help you answer these questions.

Symphony of the Seas

So, let’s dive right in…

The Disney Cruise Line is the smallest of the group and  is made up of a fleet of five – soon to be seven – ships. The ships include the Disney Fantasy , Disney Wish , Disney Wonder , Disney Magic , and Disney Dream . The fleet will be joined by the Disney Treasure in 2024! Disney Cruise Line has also recently purchased the Global Dream cruise ship .

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Royal Caribbean has 27 different ships to choose from – bumping up to 28 in 2024.

Royal Caribbean boasts moderate prices — but this cruise line is also rather generous when it comes to their extra promotions. And then there’s Disney — which has cruises that are notoriously expensive and rarely offer any major discounts.

Here are some examples for families of 4 (with 2 adults and 2 kids) during June (which is peak cruising season) sailing a 3 night Bahamian cruise or a 7 night Caribbean Cruise:

Disney Cruise Line:

  • A 3-Night Bahamian Cruise can be booked for close to $5,000 . If you want the fancier concierge room , the cost is approximately $10,000 .
  • A 7 Night Western Caribbean Cruise is between $7-10,000 depending on your stateroom. A Concierge stateroom on this type of cruise is nearing $20,000 .

Royal Caribbean:

  • You can book a 3 Night Bahamian Cruise for your family for around $3,000 . For a Royal Suite, that price will bump up to $6000 +.
  • If you take a 7 Night cruise to the Western Caribbean, you’re looking at a price range around $6-8,000 , with the Royal Class Suites costing over $11,000 .

Also keep in mind that these price ranges reflect one of Royal Caribbean’s promotional deals — where you can get 30% off every cruise.

NEWS: DisneyBand+ Added to Another Disney Cruise Ship

Yes, those price differences are pretty staggering.

Why are Disney Ships Priced Higher?

Disney doesn’t necessarily have higher quality ships or better restaurants — it’s branding that allows Disney to price their cruises WAY higher . Families have known and trusted the Disney brand to be family friendly, high-quality, and worth the cost for generations.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Mickey and Minnie at Pirate Night on the Disney Wish!

And Disney makes sure that brand is comforting even at sea . Your ketchup is plated in a Mickey shape. The characters greet with you familiar hugs. And when that “When You Wish Upon a Star” horn blasts at the start of your trip? It’s Disney magic at its best!

Our friend Matt Hochberg from RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com said it’s all about the details . Of course, you have lovely, high-quality decor on Royal Caribbean ships, but Disney offers well-known themeing . You’ll feel at home with hidden Mickeys, the characters, the Cast Members; it’s the Disney difference that you hear about.

But is it worth an extra $2,000 when other ships are high-quality, have great service, and awesome experiences?

Only the Experts Know How To Get These Disney Cruise Discounts, And We’ve Got Their Number

How “all-inclusive” are these ships really.

Let’s take a look at what is included in your cruise fare.

With Disney, you’ll pay extra for:

  • Port Adventures excursions
  • spa and salon services
  • babysitting services in the ship’s nurseries
  • onboard photography service
  • video games
  • alcoholic beverages
  • adults-only dining venues

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Room Service on Disney Wish

Disney takes “all-inclusive” a little more seriously, so these perks are included:

  • breakfast, lunch and dinner (except at the fancy restaurants like Remy or Palo )
  • soft drinks served at meals and at each ship’s beverage station
  • most Disney Character Meet & Greets — and specialty party days
  • water slides, including the big deal ones
  • entertainment (including current first-run films at the Buena Vista Theatre)
  • room service and in room dining 24 hours a day

And several other offerings , which you can find on the Disney Cruise website.

For the price of your Royal Caribbean stateroom, your fare will include:

  • ship accommodations
  • ocean transportation
  • some beverages onboard
  • and most entertainment options

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

There is no extra cost for miniature golf!

But you’ll pay extra for:

  • the Escape Room
  • the VR Experiences
  • The sky-diving simulators
  • soft drinks and room service
  • onboard photos
  • shore excursions
  • specialty restaurants
  • spa and salon treatments

Yes, many Royal Caribbean activities are still included with the price of your vacation — like surfing and zip lining aboard the ship.

For extra experiences, like the sky diving simulator for instance, you’re looking at paying an extra $50 per person.

How Big Are The Staterooms?

On average, the Disney ships’ standard staterooms have about 25% more space than the average standard ship rooms on other cruise lines. If you’re sailing on newer, bigger ships with Royal – rooms will be more comparable to Disney’s rooms.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Get ready to set sail!

Note that the room size isn’t a significant difference unless you’re talking suites (which are much less expensive and offer more perks on Royal).

Disney Cruise Line

The average standard cabin for Disney measures around 205 square feet — not including the rooms with an additional balcony.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney Dream stateroom

Most of the staterooms offered on the Disney Cruise Line have split bathrooms .

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Bathroom on Disney Dream

This means that one half of the bathroom has a tub (with a shower) and a sink, while the second half has a toilet and a second sink.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean tends to have some of the smallest regular staterooms — especially on their older ship models.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Stateroom on Symphony of the Seas

Typically, cabins will measure around 180 square feet , but we have seen 2-person rooms that only get up to 114 square feet, as well.

Lower-Priced Suites

Disney Concierge Suites have more amenities and space than regular staterooms. You’ll also receive exclusive amenities, available for suite guests only. One of these features includes complimentary internet access.

These suites give you pretty much everything the Disney Cruise Line suites promise to provide — plus more — for half the price .

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

And, yes, that includes complimentary internet access, too.

Which Cruise Is Best For Kids?

Disney has added more adult options – especially on their newest ship, the Wish, while Royal Caribbean has turned up the kid-centric marketing for their ships.

Disney and Royal Caribbean have dedicated club spaces where kids get to hang out with other kids — no grown-ups allowed. The kids clubs all feature games, crafts, and activities to keep younger folks entertained.

Disney’s Oceaneer Clubs take full advantage of their character properties . Depending on your ship, you might be able to become a Disney Imagineer for a day, or train to become a Jedi, or play dress up with Tinkerbell, or meet your favorite Marvel heroes, or shrink down to the size of a toy in Andy’s Playroom.

Tweens and teens are still gonna love the pools and water slides and onstage entertainment, as well as all the different offerings available at Castaway Cay. There are also two hangout destinations on the ships for tweens and teens only.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney Cruise Edge

Edge is a hangout for tweens ages 11-14, and has high-energy tunes, video games, karaoke, scavenger hunts, and special themed nights. Meanwhile, Vibe is for the older crowd — between the ages of 14-17.

Royal Caribbean has separate clubs for kids, too. Aquanauts (3-5) get to conduct experiments. Explorers (6-8) enjoy themed parties. Voyagers (9-11) take part in group activities. Teens have their own “living room” to hang out in and a club with a dance floor.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

There are dedicated teen venues on RC ships.

Royal Caribbean has many EXTRA outdoor activities to choose from. Depending on what cruise you set sail on, you might have the option to:

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Carousel rides are included in your cruise fare.

Try an escape room, attend a virtual concert, take a dance class, zip line, catch some waves, experience a skydiving simulator, learn fencing, try your hand at the trapeze, play laser tag, practice archery, complete a rock wall climb, ice skate, and more!

Which cruise is best for adults.

Disney Cruise Line has expanded the adults-only pool options, the adults-only beach at Castaway Cay is a delight, there are adults-only spas, restaurants, and the bars and lounges switch to adults-only at night.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Senses Spa on the Disney Wish

Since Disney does label itself as a more family-friendly environment , you’re not gonna be able to play a round of craps with Donald Duck, or anything. But, depending on what you’re looking for, the lack of a casino could be a major draw or deterrent for you .

If you’re not big into the whole casino and late-night party aspect , but you’re still a big fan of all-things-Disney, then splurging for a Disney cruise may still be your best option.

Royal Caribbean’s extra outdoorsy experiences and classes are PLENTIFUL . And they’re not just great for the kids and teens — they’re great for adults, as well.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

The Solarium is adults only – 24 hours per day.

Royal Caribbean has casinos , with slot machines and gaming tables aplenty.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Royal Caribbean ships include casinos.

Granted, you can go your entire cruise and not run into these casinos if you don’t want to.

If you’re looking for a cruise with a lot more outdoor activities — great for kids, teens, and adults alike — Royal Caribbean may be more up your alley.

Dining at Sea

Each cruise has dining that benefits different types of passengers.

If you want your meals to be more of an experience rather than just a place to dine, go with Disney.

All Disney Cruises have a rotational dinner system where guests are assigned a pre-set dining time and location each night. You’ll also have the same server for each of your meals; that way, they can learn about your specific likes and dislikes and help you choose the foods and drinks that’ll best suit your specific tastes.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Keg and Compass on Disney Wish

Once again – the theming and brand is highlighted at Disney’s restaurants. Depending on which cruise you choose, you could…

  • Sing along with the cast of Frozen
  • Have a personal interview with Crush the Turtle
  • Be surrounded by glowing lanterns to celebrate Rapunzel’s birthday
  • Help Ant Man and the Wasp test out new shrinking/growing technologies via quantum cores on your table
  • And SO MUCH MORE.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

There are fewer anytime options available for you to choose from for breakfast and dinner than you’ll find on Royal Caribbean, but that sacrifice could be worth it for those over-the-top Disney dinner experiences .

If you prefer diverse dining and adventurous cuisines , go with Royal Caribbean. Royal Caribbean caters more to those diverse specialty restaurants, with a wide variety of dining venues and celebrity concepts .

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

It costs extra to dine at Wonderland.

But don’t worry picky-eaters — there’s STILL something for everyone on these ships!

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Dinner choices include your assigned dining room, a buffet, or a specialty restaurant. Or get pizza on the promenade!

Royal Caribbean also has more traditional cuisines too — but, for the most part, these restaurants prove to be more culturally diverse than Disney Cruise Line.

Cruise Destinations

For a more specific idea of where you can sail, you’ll need to do some research.

Disney frequently sails to the Bahamas and the Caribbean , but the Disney Wonder also has seasonal sailings to Alaska . Other destinations vary year by year but have included Mexico, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and Canada with New England. And with more ships there are more ports of call . Disney is moving a second ship to Europe this summer, and have just announced Australia and New Zealand sailings .

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s itineraries include popular destinations like the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Alaska. Beyond that, Royal Caribbean also sails across the globe to destinations in Asia, Australia, and South America.

Private Islands

Each cruise line has at least one private island destination and if these are important to you, you’ll want to choose an itinerary that includes these Ports of Call.

Disney’s Castaway Cay offers a more traditional experience — with beaches, water play areas, walking trails, dining locations, and a snorkeling lagoon. Plus, the Disney character appearances on a tropical island are pretty awesome.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Goofy at Castaway Cay

Disney is currently working on a second private island, called Lighthouse Point. Lighthouse Point will be located in Eleuthera (also in the Bahamas).

Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay has white sandy beaches, water slides, and a helium balloon ride above the island.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Are you ready for a Perfect Day?

At the water park (which costs extra), you’ll not only be able to ride the tallest water slide in North America, but you’ll also be able to splash around in the biggest wave pool of the Caribbean. Later this year, CocoCay will also be opening an adults-only area called Hideaway Beach .

Royal Caribbean is also working on another private island — called Perfect Day at Lelepa in partnership with the community of Vanuatu. Though this private island will be smaller than CocoCay, it’ll offer snorkeling, paddleboarding, and cultural cuisines.

So, when it comes to picking a ship based on its specialty destination, it all depends on what you’re looking for.

Will The Older Ships Be A Worse Experience Than The Newer Ones?

This could be a concern for you – especially when you consider just how many ships there are in Royal’s fleet compared to Disney.

With older ships, you run the risk of  less onboard, high-tech offerings …like slightly worse internet connectivity (though this gets better every year).

There will be fewer specialty restaurants and no Broadway style shows on some of the older ships.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Symphony of the Seas is 228,081 gross tonnage; Enchantment of the Seas is 82,910 gross tonnage.

And older ships tend to truly show their age through the old-fashioned room styles . On older ships, you’ll find fewer outlets and more dated color schemes. Not to mention even smaller cabins.

HOWEVER— older ships tend to be smaller, and this gives them the chance to cruise to less-frequently visited ports .

Also keep in mind that BIGGER ships aren’t always BETTER ships. A bigger ship sacrifices that more intimate feel that you’ll still experience on classic ships.

Look INSIDE Disney Cruise Line’s Newest Ship — The Treasure

So which cruise line is the very best.

Should you choose a Royal Caribbean or Disney cruise?

Disney cruises are gonna be your BEST option for younger kids , but there really is something for everyone. Disney fans will love all the details and entertainment. These ships are more classic with luxurious amenities.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

HOWEVER, if you want a suite, you’ll get more perks with Royal Caribbean for HALF the cost . Plus there are a lot more potential discounts to help keep your vacation budget in check.

Royal Caribbean does have MORE in the way of onboard recreational activities . You can opt to sit and watch the sea go by with a tropical drink in hand or seek out a fun activity from the packed schedule. In a single evening, you could play trivia, roulette, or dodge ball. If you have more energy, attend a comedy show or go dancing. Feeling tired? Head to an outdoor hot tub to stargaze!

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

And if what you’re looking for is a family-friendly vacation on a beautiful ship, good customer service, and good dining at an affordable price – and you don’t need all the extra Disney characters, then Royal Caribbean could be a perfect choice to dip your toe into the cruising world.

If you grew up with Disney and love the theme parks, you’ll be equally happy aboard a Disney ship.

There’s SO MUCH TO CONSIDER when it comes to choosing the RIGHT cruise for you and your family!

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Disney Cruise Line ship

Gene Sloan

Is a voyage on a Disney Cruise Line ship on your bucket list? You'll find a growing number of options when it comes time to pick an itinerary.

While the cruising arm of Disney has long focused mostly on voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, with year-round sailings to those destinations out of Florida, it also now offers a relatively wide range of seasonal sailings to Alaska, the Mexican Riviera, Bermuda, Europe and Canada.

The family-friendly cruise brand, notably, is expanding its footprint worldwide as it adds four new vessels in quick succession.

Already, the first of those ships, the 2,508-passenger Disney Wish , has arrived, boosting the size of the Disney fleet from four ships to five and allowing for more departures to the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe.

Two more sister vessels to Disney Wish are due to begin sailing in 2024 and 2025, respectively, allowing for further expansion in Disney cruise itineraries. In addition, the line has yet another new vessel coming in 2025 that isn't related to the other three. Called Disney Adventure, it's a one-off vessel originally designed for an Asian line , and it'll sail in Asia (perhaps catering mostly to Asian travelers; Disney has been mum so far on the target audience for it).

All these new ships arriving in quick succession will likely mean not just more departures to destinations where Disney Cruise Line is established but also sailings in new regions. For example, Disney has never before offered Asia sailings.

Here are our picks for the five best Disney cruise destinations you can visit with your family.

Caribbean and Bahamas

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney Cruise Line's top destination has always been the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Since its founding more than two decades ago, the brand has based the bulk of its fleet in Florida to offer sailings to the islands. Port Canaveral, which is just an hour away from Disney's Orlando-area theme parks, has always been its biggest hub.

The line is particularly known for three- and four-night cruises out of Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau in the Bahamas. These short getaways let families get a taste of Disney cruising that some Disney fans pair with a stay at Disney World.

The cruise line also regularly offers seven-night sailings out of Port Canaveral that visit Caribbean islands like St. Thomas and Tortola.

Related: First look at Disney Wish in photos

In recent years, Disney has also built up its Caribbean and Bahamas cruise offerings from other ports in Florida — initially Miami and, more recently, Fort Lauderdale. The ships the line has based in these ports typically offer four- and five-night sailings to Castaway Cay and one other port, such as Cozumel or Grand Cayman.

In addition, Disney is offering a growing number of Caribbean sailings out of Galveston, Texas, and New Orleans.

For 2024, the line will have four of its five ships — Disney Wish, Disney Dream, Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy — sailing to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of one of the above ports, with their home bases often shifting between them.

Disney Wish, which is Disney's newest ship, will be based in Port Canaveral year-round to operate the line's classic three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. These voyages are designed to be paired with a visit to nearby Disney World for a longer Disney vacation.

Disney Fantasy will also sail out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and Caribbean year-round, offering longer voyages.

Disney Dream will spend the start and the end of the year sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale, with a stint in the middle of the year (from May to October) sailing in Europe.

Disney Magic will take Disney Dream's place sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale from May to October. During the early and late months of the year, it'll sail out of Galveston.

Come 2025, Disney will have four ships — Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, Disney Dream and Disney Magic — sailing three- to five-night getaways from Florida to the line's Bahamian destinations, including its new private beach destination Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and its long-open private island Disney Castaway Cay. Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish will operate the trips from Port Canaveral, while Disney Dream and Disney Magic will sail from Fort Lauderdale.

Before taking up residence in Florida in April 2025, Disney Magic will also offer three months' worth of sailings out of Galveston, Texas, to Progreso and Cozumel in Mexico and Grand Cayman.

All of the 2025 sailings are already open for bookings.

Disney has cut back on voyages out of San Diego for 2024, after increasing its San Diego departures sharply in 2023. But it still offers several trips to Mexico out of the city on Disney Wonder.

For 2024, the 1,754-passenger vessel will offer a mix of three- to seven-night sailings to Mexico during March and April. Shorter three- and four-night sailings typically feature calls at Ensenada, Mexico, and California's Catalina Island. Seven-night sailings include calls at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

Related: 11 ways to save money on a Disney cruise

The big factor driving Disney's cutbacks on sailings out of San Diego in 2024 is its new focus on voyages out of Australian ports. Disney Wonder will spend much of January and February sailing out of Australian ports and then return to the region in October for another season of Australia trips.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney offers a wide variety of itineraries in Europe every summer, from Mediterranean voyages out of Barcelona and Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome), to Northern Europe sailings out of Southampton, England.

Ranging from seven to 11 nights, Disney's Europe voyages each year typically take place on a single ship that sails from multiple home ports throughout the season. For 2024, that ship will be the 2,500-passenger Disney Dream. The line has yet to announce which of its ships will go to Europe in 2025.

Typical for the shorter itineraries the line offers in Europe are seven-night sailings out of Civitavecchia to the Greek Islands. These sailings stop in Mykonos, Santorini and Crete in Greece, as well as Naples, Italy.

Related: 17 tips for sailing on Disney Cruise Line

A longer, 11-night itinerary starting in Civitavecchia and ending in Barcelona includes calls at Piraeus (the port for Athens), Santorini and Mykonos in Greece; Messina (on the island of Sicily), Naples and Livorno in Italy; and Toulon, France.

Among Northern Europe itineraries, Disney offers focused, weeklong sailings to Norway with calls at the Norwegian ports of Alesund, Nordfjordeid, Eidfjord and Stavanger.

disney cruise alaska vs caribbean

Disney does not have a large presence in Alaska. The line sends just one ship to Alaska each year. Family-friendly cruise rivals Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line, by contrast, each send three ships to Alaska each year, and Norwegian Cruise Line sends five vessels to the destination.

Still, Disney fans won't feel like they're missing out. The one vessel Disney sends to Alaska each year, the 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder, stays for nearly the entire summer season, from late June to mid-September and offers a distinctly Disney take on The Last Frontier.

Always beginning and ending in Vancouver, British Columbia, and lasting seven nights, Disney's Alaska sailings typically include stops at three of these four Alaska ports: Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point (which three vary by departure date). Itineraries also include a visit to Stikine Icecap, which is south of Juneau.

Related: 5 reasons Disney cruises aren't just for kids

These are fairly typical ports for an Alaska cruise. But the (extra-charge) activities that Disney has organized for the ports aren't always the same as what other lines offer.

As one might expect for Disney, the line has crafted some of its shore excursions in Alaska ports with special Disney touches, such as Disney character appearances at the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp & Salmon Bake tour in Ketchikan. (Having done this one myself, I will say, for the record, that it's a little hokey; but it does get you a Disney character fix if that's your aim.)

Another shore excursion with a Disney touch is the outdoor Family Scavenger Hunt at Icy Strait Point, where participants join a local guide on a hunt for items such as clam shells and native plants, as well as a "special surprise" with a Disney theme.

Unlike many lines, Disney does not offer one-way sailings to Alaska from Vancouver or Seattle that can be paired with add-on land tours to create an extended sea-and-land Alaska vacation — something known as a "cruisetour." If that's what you're looking for, and you want to stick with a family-friendly line, you might want to consider the one-way cruisetour offerings from Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Disney typically offers at least one and sometimes several cruises to Bermuda each fall, ranging from quick, five-night trips to longer, eight-night sailings.

For the year just ending (2023), the line offered four such sailings, and it's offered even more than that in certain years. Alas, for the coming year (2024), Disney currently does not have a single Bermuda sailing scheduled — a bit of an anomaly.

That said, we would expect Disney to bring back its Bermuda sailings for 2025 or 2026. It's been such a mainstay of the brand.

So ... stay tuned.

Bottom line

Family-friend Disney Cruise Line is a relatively small cruise brand, with just five ships (one of its biggest rivals in the family cruise market, Royal Caribbean, has 26 vessels). But that doesn't mean its itinerary choices are limited. The line offers regular sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Bermuda and Europe.
