What Do You Put Under RV Jacks? 5 Best Options

There are many steps involved in setting up an RV campsite properly but one of the most important is to get the RV level and stabilized.

As a stable and level RV is the foundation of a good camping experience.

Because if the RV is not level it can cause all sorts of problems from draining grey and black water tanks, to making it harder to open doors and cabinets.

Not to mention it can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep!

Plus, there’s nothing fun or relaxing about camping in an unstable RV that’s shaking or rocking back and forth.

If you’re new to RVing though, you probably have a few questions about how to properly stabilize and level an RV.

And one of the most common questions, in regards to both is, “What Do You Put Under RV Jacks?”

Because of this, we thought we would write this blog post, to explain the ins and outs of what you put under RV jacks.

What Do You Put Under RV Jacks?

The most popular choices for what to put under RV jacks include jack pads, jack blocks, RV leveling blocks, permanent jack pads, and dimensional lumber.

And which one you should choose depends on your situation as well as your particular needs.

So, let’s take a closer look at each option to help you decide which option is best for you and your RV.

Jack pads, which are usually made from either one-inch thick plastic or rubber are one of the most popular options to place under RV jacks.

As they’re specifically designed to stabilize RV jacks and keep them from sinking into the ground

Jack pads can also be used for either stabilizer jacks or leveling jacks.

And they offer a great deal of support and stability, while also being relatively inexpensive. As jack pads usually only cost between $15 and $20 for a set of two.

Leveling Jack Blocks

Leveling jack blocks are specifically designed for leveling jacks and allow you to level your RV without needing to extend your leveling jacks as much.

Which can provide a much more solid and stable feel inside the RV and helps to prevent swaying.

As jack blocks are usually anywhere from 6 to 10 inches tall depending on the brand.

Because of this, your RV leveling jacks don’t have to extend all the way to the ground to level the RV, reducing the amount of jack that has to be extended.

Plus like standard jack pads, they help to prevent leveling jacks from sinking into the ground, as they disperse the weight of the jack.

RV Leveling Blocks

RV leveling blocks, which are typically one inch tall, made from plastic, and look like a short “Lego” block are another popular choice to place under RV jacks.

As they’re able to serve double-duty because while they are most commonly used to manually level an RV, they can also be used as a jack pad as well.

If you don’t feel like buying separate jack pads, like the ones above.

They even make leveling block caps that fit over the leveling block, giving the block a flat surface like a jack pad, to provide a more uniform surface for the jack to rest on.

Permanent Jack Pads

While not as popular as the other above-mentioned options, permanent jack pads, are another option to use under RV leveling jacks.

As permanent jack pads are designed to attach to the bottom of leveling jacks.

To provide a larger footprint for your leveling jacks, so they’re less likely to sink into the ground.

And because they’re made from rubber, they also conform better to uneven terrains like gravel and offer a moderate level of vibration dampening.

But perhaps the best part about installing permanent jack pads on your RV is that it eliminates the need to crawl under the RV to place jack pads.

Dimensional Lumber

The final option that some RVers choose to use under their RV jacks is dimensional lumber that they make into homemade jack pads.

As dimensional lumber is customizable and tends to be less expensive compared to buying store-bought jack pads.

To be honest though, with the high cost of lumber, I’m not sure how much money you’re really saving.

Unless you happen to have some scrap lumber laying around.

Are Jack Pads Necessary for RVs?

Unlike leveling blocks , you could theoretically not use jack pads and just rest your RV jacks directly on the ground.

However, there are a handful of reasons why it’s always best practice to use jack pads whenever you’re deploying your RV jacks, which we’ve listed below.

Improves Stability and Leveling

The main reason why it’s important to use jack pads under RV jacks is that it provides a solid level surface for your RV jacks to rest on.

Which helps ensure that your RV remains stable and level, while also reducing bouncing, rocking, and shaking.

Protects RV Jacks and Jack Feet

Another reason to use jack pads is that it helps protect the feet on your RV jacks from getting damaged or bent out of shape.

By providing a softer surface for them to rest on instead of concrete, asphalt, or rocky terrain.

Additionally, if you’re parking your RV on grass or soft earth, using jack pads also helps to prevent your RV jacks from sinking into the ground and making direct contact with the ground as well as moisture.

Which in turn helps to prolong the life of your RV jack feet.

Reduces Vibration and Noise

Deploying RV jacks without jack pads can be quite loud, due to the metal jacks making direct contact with the hard ground.

In addition, without jack pads, vibrations are much more likely to travel through the RV.

Which can be quite annoying, especially if you’re trying to sleep.

So, by using jack pads you can help to reduce both the noise and vibration created by your RV jacks, making for a much more pleasant camping experience.

Prevents Damage to the Campsite

Last but not least, another good reason to use jack pads is that it helps to prevent damage to the campsite.

As RV jacks can easily sink into soft ground, such as dirt or sand leaving behind holes.

Which can be especially damaging in more delicate environments.

Such as a sandy beach, or anywhere that has a sensitive ecosystem that could be easily disrupted.

But even if you’re not parked on dirt or sand, you can still damage hard surfaces, such as asphalt or concrete, with RV jacks.

Especially with heavier RVs, such as Class A RVs, Class C RVs, or fifth wheels.

Whose jacks can often dig into or cave in hard surfaces, when jack pads are not used to help disperse the weight.

Leaving behind depressions and even holes.

Because of this, many RV parks actually require the use of jack pads, to prevent damage to their campsites.

Why Does My Camper Shake When I Walk In It?

If your RV stabilizer jacks and or RV leveling jacks are deployed and your camper is shaking or bouncing when you walk in it, this can be caused by several issues, which we’ve listed below.

Loose or Damaged Stabilizer Jacks/Leveling Jacks

If your RV has loose or damaged stabilizer jacks or leveling jacks, this could be the reason why your RV is shaking when you walk in it.

As loose or damaged stabilizer jacks or leveling jacks will limit the amount of support they’re able to offer.

Which in turn can cause the RV to shake or wobble.

Additionally, if your stabilizer or leveling jacks are damaged, they may not be able to properly support the weight of the RV.

Which can also lead to shaking and instability.

Improper Leveling on Uneven Terrain

Another reason why your RV might shake is if the terrain you’re parked on is uneven and you haven’t properly leveled the RV.

Because being just slightly out of level can lead to shaking inside the RV.

Worn Out Chassis or Suspension Parts

Another reason RVs shake when you walk in them is worn out chassis or suspension parts.

Especially on older RVs that are 10 years or older.

Because while stabilizer jacks will help to stabilize an RV, if you have worn chassis or suspension parts, which act as the foundation of an RV, you can still experience some level of shaking or instability.

So if you’ve checked for and eliminated the first two issues and your RV is still shaking or wobbling.

Then it’s probably time to have the chassis and suspension inspected, to see if there are any loose or worn parts that might be causing the problem.

How Do You Stop an RV from Shaking or Rocking When Parked?

If your RV is shaking or rocking when parked and everything is in good working order, there are a few things you can do to help stabilize the RV.

Which we’ve listed below.

Make Sure the Wheels are Tightly Chocked

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure the wheels are tightly chocked.

As even slightly loose wheel chocks can cause an RV to rock when parked, particularly if the ground is uneven or unlevel.

Check to Ensure the RV is Level

The next thing you’ll want to do is check to make sure the RV is completely level.

As an RV that is even slightly unlevel can cause it to be unstable, which can lead to rocking or unwanted movement.

Deploy RV Stabilizer Jacks

One of the quickest and easiest ways to stop an RV from rocking when parked is to simply deploy your RV’s stabilizer jacks.

As stabilizer jacks are specifically designed to help stabilize an RV and prevent shaking and or rocking.

Use Jack Pads

The last thing you can do to help reduce rocking in an RV is to use jack pads under your RV’s stabilizer or leveling jacks.

As jack pads provide a more level and stable surface for your RV jacks to rest on.

Which in turn will make the RV itself more stable, and help to prevent things like shaking, bouncing, and rocking.

What Do You Put Under a Tongue Jack on a Travel Trailer?

The same jack pads, leveling blocks, or dimensional lumber used for other RV jacks, can also be used under travel trailer tongue jacks as well .

As tongue jacks on travel trailers do not require any type of special jack pad for leveling.

Due to the fact, that travel trailer tongue jacks operate the same as any other jack on an RV, in that, all they really need to operate properly is a solid level surface to rest on.

How Do You Use an RV Jack Pad?

RV jack pads are typically used for one of two reasons or for both.

The first way is to use them as a leveling pad, which is accomplished by placing the RV jack pads under the RV’s stabilizer or leveling jacks, in order to provide a more level surface for the jacks to rest on.

Which in turn, will help to stabilize the RV and prevent it from shaking or bouncing.

The second way is to use them as a support pad, which is accomplished by placing the RV jack pads under the RV’s stabilizer or leveling jacks, in order to provide additional support for the jacks.

Which is particularly useful when stabilizing or leveling an RV on soft ground, such as sand or dirt.

As the RV jack pad will help to distribute the weight of the RV more evenly and prevent the jacks from sinking into the ground.

Can You Level an RV with Stabilizer Jacks?

Stabilizer jacks should never be used to level an RV, as they’re only designed for stabilization.

Attempting to use stabilizer jacks for leveling will almost certainly damage them.

Due in large part to their design and construction.

As stabilizer jacks, which are typically configured like scissor jacks and located at the front and rear, are not strong enough to support the weight of an RV for leveling.

So while stabilizer jacks can help to prevent an RV from rocking and shaking when parked.

They should never be used for leveling an RV, as doing so will quickly damage them.

How Do You Make a Jack Pad?

While you can certainly buy store-bought jack pads from companies like Camco and Tri-Lynx.

You can also make your own heavy-duty jack pads quite easily with just a few supplies and some basic DIY skills.

RV Jack Pad Material List

To make your own RV jack pads, you’ll need the following supplies:

• 3/4-Inch Thick Plywood (Preferably Treated)
• 2×4 or 4×4 Depending on the Desired End Height (Preferably Treated)
• 2 1/2-Inch Exterior Wood Screws
• Large Exterior Metal Handel
• Drill Bit Set
• Circular Saw
• Tape Measure
• Chop Saw (Nice to Have for Straighter Cuts)
• Level and Square (Nice to Have for Straighter Lines)

Heavy-Duty RV Jack Pad Build Instructions

Now that we have all the materials and supplies we need, it’s time to start building the jack pad.

• Step 1: Cut a 2×4 or 4×4 into four equal pieces 14″ long.
• Step 2: Cut out two pieces of 3/4 plywood 14″ by 14″.
• Step 3: Dry fit all the wood together by sandwiching the four pieces of dimensional lumber between the two pieces of plywood.
• Step 4: Remove the top piece of plywood from the dry fit.
• Step 5: Apply a liberal amount of wood glue to the top of the dimensional lumber that the top piece of plywood was resting on.
• Step 6: Place the top piece of plywood back onto the dimensional lumber that now has glue on it and make sure it’s properly aligned on all sides.
• Step 7: Use 2 1/2-inch exterior screws to screw the top piece of plywood onto the dimensional lumber below, drilling three screws into each piece of wood, evenly spacing, and slightly countersinking each screw.
• Step 8: Flip the jack pad over and repeat steps 5 through 7 for the bottom piece of plywood.
• Step 9: Install an exterior handle on one side of the jack pad.

Make Your Own RV Jack Pads

At the beginning of the 2017 football season, I had already made plans for two RV trips – to UCF and then to Clemson. Both of these roadtrips were going to involve parking the RV in a field.

Which means there is always a chance for mud or other uneven surfaces that make operating the RV jacks problematic.

Why DIY RV Jack Pads

Remember, at the beginning of fall, I was short timing Starter RV – I was pretty sure that it would be my last season with the 1990 Winnebago Chieftan. I didn’t want to spend money on anything other than basic, required maintenance to keep it running. There were no mods or upgrades that wouldn’t be able to go with me to a new RV.

I’ve been to Clemson before and parked in that field. And for some reason, it always rains when Georgia Tech is there. And jacks + mud = a mess. I needed something for this season. I wanted a cheap but yet effective solution for jack pads.

Safety First

I recommend that you use some good work gloves and eye safety glasses .

The work gloves will protect your hands from splinters and flying debris as well as provide some additional grip assistance. Make sure to get ones that fit your hands for precision work with power tools.

Safety glasses should always be worn when working with power tools. Your eyes are quite sensitive to debris and flying objects. And life would be so different without your eyes. Protect them!

Making the RV Jack Pads

These DIY RV Jack Pads are simple to make and add so much convenience to your RV setup. It took about an hour of work, after all the materials were acquired. And that’s with me stopping to take pictures for you.

To begin, I ventured out to the local Home Depot and picked up a 2 x 10 x 12 board and some eye hooks.

Most hardware stores will cut the boards into smaller sections if you want them to. But they also usually charge by the cut. While it’s not expensive, if you have a circular saw at home, you can easily do it yourself.

I had the store cut the board into 3 foot long pieces so that they would fit in the backseat of my car, since I wasn’t taking the RV to the store for this project.

Once I got home, I cut the sections into 1 foot long pieces. Then I sanded down the edges a bit so I wouldn’t get splinters over time.

The next step was to add eyehooks and nylon rope . The bright nylon rope makes it a lot easier to grab the jack pads when they are under the RV. And the bright color makes it more likely that I’ll see them when doing a pre-departure walk-around, even if it is still muddy and/or raining.

I made a total of 8 jack pads, each 1 foot long.

I had some extra wood left over that I have added to my scrap pile for a future project. There’s always something that I will be able to use the scrap wood on, whether around the house or the RV, so I’m not worried about the extra wood. You could go ahead and make a couple of spares if you want.

Using RV Jack Pads

Jack pads are useful in a variety of ways. First, if you are parking on grass or gravel, jack pads are great to prevent your jacks from getting stuck in mud. Without a jack pad, the weight of the RV will push the jack down into the mud. Then when you try to retract them, they mud will create a suction holding the jacks to the ground. With a jack pad, you are providing a barrier between the mud and the jack, making it more likely that they will be able to retract.

Jack pads can also help you level up your RV. My jacks will only level up to 2 inches. Otherwise, they stop during auto-level and provide an excess slope warning. Add a jack pad under to help raise the ground level. If you are on a slight slope, use more than one to raise that corner to be level with the others. This is why I made 8 – 2 for each corner jack.

So far, I have not needed to use more than 6 at one time, but I did have one rope fall off. So it’s always good to have a couple of extra around.

RV Step Stabilizers

This happened to me when I stayed at Oak Plantation RV Campground last December. But handy dandy jack pads to the rescue – another reason to keep an extra couple of jack pads on hand. I added one underneath the step stabilizer and then was able to go in and out of the RV much easier.

Don’t feel like making jack pads? You can always order some from Amazon. There are various ready made jack pads available for purchase.

I also plan on adding RV SnapPads to my setup soon. The advantage of these is that they stay on – no need to go under the RV to place them or pick them up (after initial install). Of course, they are a pricier option.

Even with Snap Pads in place, I’ll keep a few extra jack pads in the storage bays to help with leveling issues as we visit more stadiums and campsites.

I basically have the same thing for my class a. But the have all broken over time. I was thinking about making new ones but buying a piece of horse stall matt and cutting it to the same size as the wood and using a combo of glue and screws to hold it in place on the wood. Might add a little more stability on solid ground and a little extra height too.

It’s pretty much the nature of the beast when you put heavy things on wood or plastic. I mean, our jacks even damage the asphalt pavement in some cases. So I do expect that any jack pads will eventually break over time. The good thing about the DIY versions is that it is pretty cheap and easy to replace with new ones. Just a few cuts and some sanding (if you are detail oriented, it’s not even required) and you are ready to go again.

Back in 2013, before we bought our double-axle Eclipse Milan 26RLS, I wrote this post on How to Level and Stabilize a Tent Trailer .  I should have titled it, How to Chock, Level, and Stabilize a Tent Trailer.

I finally have, after almost five years and some not-so-good products, come up with the solutions to quickly and securely level, chock, and stabilize our travel trailer.

Through trial and error, and a couple of almost disastrous and dangerous events with our Milan, I have finally figured things out so we can camp safe and secure. Not only have I eliminated some potentially serious problems, our travel trailer now sits rock solid without any noticeable shaking when we move about inside.

Hopefully this post will help my readers who own campers to avoid some of the mistakes I have made with our tandem axle travel trailer.

The solutions include a pair of Andersen Camper Levelers, a Fastway ONEStep Chock, an Ultra-Fab Odyssey 4000 electric tongue jack, a pair of BAL Industries X-Chock tire stabilizers, and replacement stabilizers jacks that are 6” taller than the originals that came with the trailer. I will review each of these and go through the process of how to level, chock, and stabilize a tandem axle travel trailer. The steps should be applicable to any multi-axle trailer including 5th wheels.

When we bought our Milan almost 5 years ago I bought some Lynx blocks for leveling side-to-side, a pair of Camco Wheel Stops to “chock” the wheels, and an Ultra-Fab Odyssey 4000 power tongue jack for leveling front-to-rear. Oh boy, did I learn a lot over the years. Probably the most important lesson is that “wheel chocks” are not necessarily wheel chocks.

Wheel Stops and Wheel Stabilizers are not Chocks

What I have learned is the fact that these “wheel stops” or “wheel stabilizers” are not designed or meant to “secure” the trailer.

What I didn’t understand is that these kinds of wheel stops are not “Chocks,” but are stabilizing tools.

The instructions that came with our Camco Wheel Stops included this warning (which I completely missed):

CAUTION: This product is intended to help stabilize a recreational vehicle and is not intended for use on heavy commercial type trucks or trailers. Always use brake and wheel chocks to safely secure vehicle .

Opps! I thought these things were wheel “chocks.” I was wrong.

We often (usually) camp in places that are not level as you can see in the pictures below.

On two different occasions our trailer has slid off the leveling blocks and the tongue jack block and the trailer has moved backwards at least a couple of feet – this is the potentially dangerous mentioned earlier.

The one thing I did not like about our Camco “Wheel Stops” is the adjustment knob is tightened by hand. A little bit of Google research found these BAL Industries X-Chocks that come with a ratcheting wrench to tighten them. Much better.

So I ordered a pair and found this WARNING in the instructions:

Warning! Do not use the BAL Chock as a parking brake for your trailer. Be sure to level your trailer before installing the BAL Chock between the trailer tires. Remove the BAL Chock from your tires before connecting the trailer to the tow vehicle. Operating the tongue jack (up and down) can cause unnecessary stress to the BAL Chock. If you do not remove the BAL Chock from your tires before operating, your trailer’s jack could damage the Chock and void the Manufacturer’s warranty.

Notice that the heading states the X-Chock is an addition to BAL’s stabilization product line.

In other words but some sort of brake on your wheels… the Camco Wheel Stop and the BAL X-Chock are not brakes, but wheel stabilizers. I know, it’s confusing because most accessories that are sold as chocks do indeed act as a brake to keep the trailer from rolling.

I’m not an engineer, but I suspect that when you use a wheel stop like the Camco Wheel Stop or the BAL X-Chock the wheels are locked on a plane parallel to the center of each axle. Locking the wheels and then leveling the trailer front to rear is going to apply torque to the axle springs, which creates torsional forces – not a good thing. Especially, as in our case, when the 833 pounds of fresh water that sits behind our axle is transferred to our black and grey water waste tanks that sit in front of the axles. This was probably a contributing factor the two times our trailer slipped off the leveling blocks.

Okay, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty

Step 1: Level the Trailer From Side to Side

Andersen Camper Levelers are the best camper leveling product I have ever used

Some users complain that the levelers slip on cement or wet grass when driving the wheels onto the levelers. Andersen sells a rubber pad that is placed on the ground under the leveler to eliminate this problem. I did buy the rubber pads but haven’t needed to use them. I suspect that this mostly happens when the trailer is backed up onto the levelers. I had the same problem with the Lynx blocks, but found that if I place the levelers (either type) in front of the wheels and pull the trailer forward onto the levelers they don’t slide. It takes me about one minute to level the trailer side-to-side with the Andersen Camper Levelers and I can get it perfectly level versus any kind of block because blocks are not adjustable. For example the Lynx blocks are 1” high, so you add or subtract a block to “almost” get the trailer level.

The following series of pictures demonstrate how to level the low side of the trailer:

Notice in the above picture that the leveler is curved, which helps secure and stabilize the trailer.

Our axles are fairly close together and the levelers “just” fit. The included instructions state you can cut up to 4” off the narrow end if your axles are even closer together.

Some users have reported their levelers broke in half. Apparently there was a problem with the plastic manufacturing, which Andersen says have been fixed. Andersen has an unlimited replacement warranty should a leveler break.

Step 2: Chock the Trailer Wheels on the Opposite Side of the Levelers (a.k.a. as “secure or brake” the wheels)

I am absolutely thrilled with the Fastway ONEStep Chock

Before the first use, the chock has to be adjusted to match the distance between the tires. The set is quick and the instructions are easy to follow.

Takes about 15 seconds to put in place and it is SECURE!

A padlock can be placed in the chock as a theft deterrent. The instructions show how to do it.

You probably noticed the long vinyl covered steel cable in the pictures above. This is used to unlock the chock. Just pull up on the cable (it takes a good tug) and the locking mechanism releases.

Before purchasing, you will need to do a bit of measuring. I didn’t have to measure because I know our trailer tires are fair close together and the standard chock would fit. Here are the specs from the Fastway website:

Step 3: Unhitch the Trailer and Level Front to Rear

We love our Ultra-Fab Odyssey 4000 Tongue Jack

We replaced the manual tongue jack on our 2006 Fleetwood Niagara with an Ultra-Fab Ultra 3000. We like it so much that we bought an Ultra-Fab Odyssey 4000 before we even took delivery on our Milan, which came with a manual jack. Here’s a review I did on the Odyssey 4000 a few years ago.

The two incidents when our trailer slide off the leveling blocks the tongue jack was on a wood block and slide off hitting the ground very hard – almost 900 pounds of tongue weight impacting the tongue jack with a lateral force – it didn’t faze the Odyssey 4000 at all! As often as we camp along with this kind of abuse and it keeps on working. I highly recommend this product!!

Step 4: Stabilize the Wheels

The BAL Industries X-Chock really helps make our trailer “Rock Steady”

Like the Fastway chock, you need to do some measuring to get the right size X-Chock. Per the BAL Industry website the standard X-Chock, “Fits even the tightest of applications retracting down to 1 3/8 inch and extends to 10 inches.”

The X-Tended Fit X-Chock, “The same great features of the original X-Chock in a wider application. Extends up to 17 inches to accommodate wide track axle spacing commonly found on Bullet, LaCrosse, PrimeTime, Passport, North Trail, etc.”

Jack pads are an often overlooked yet essential item for any RVers who consistently use leveling or stabilization jacks. They help keep your jack from sinking into soft ground or being damaged while pressed against hard concrete or asphalt.

While it may seem like there isn’t much to separate different jack pads from one another, you’d be surprised by the subtle differences that can make a big difference on how they work.

Our list includes multiple types and styles of jack pads at a variety of different price points.

Camco RV Stabilizing Jack Pads

The Camco RV Stabilizing Jack Pads are heavy-duty polypropylene jack pads designed to help stop your RV’s jacks from sinking into the ground. They come in a pack of four and are UV stabilized to protect them from the sun’s damaging rays.

They come in a pack of four with a velcro storage strap and nest together into a very compact cube. They’re rated for a maximum load of 6,000 lbs, just about right for your average travel trailer, pop up camper, or class B RV .

They’re compact and very easy to use, but they do have some flaws. First and foremost, they’re clearly designed to be value-priced jack pads. That’s not a bad thing in itself, but it does mean that they aren’t as strong or durable as some other options out there.

Overall the Camco RV Stabilizing Jack Pads are a good choice for lighter travel trailers and RVs, especially if you’re looking to get out there for a bargain price.

SnapPad Xtra XL Permanently Attached RV Leveling Jack Pad

The SnapPad Xtra XL Permanently Attached RV Leveling Jack Pads are heavy duty rubber jack pads for large RVs. They’re designed to be mounted on the end of your RV’s jacks and offer substantial protection against sinkage or damage.

When they said these are heavy duty, they meant it. Each jack pad is 12 inches across and weighs a full five pounds. Once attached they’ll keep your heavy weight RV from shifting, sinking, or moving effectively for the long haul.

Permanently mounted jack pads require a good bit more setup than basic models, but are a lot more convenient once mounted. You can just lower your jacks down to level your RV without having to worry about laying them out at the right angle or orientation.

One thing to keep in mind though is cost. A four pack of the Xtra XL’s are substantially more expensive than other jack pads.

If you’ve got a large RV and don’t want to be bothered pulling out and putting away jack pads, the SnapPad Xtra XL’s are a very viable option.

Quality Plastics Utility Block

The Quality Plastics Utility Block is a combination leveling block and jack pad. It’s basically a heavy duty plastic that’s designed to act as both a jack pad and as portable leveling blocks.

It comes in a pack of four and stacks together for easy storage. The blocks are extremely easy to use for both of its intended purposes and pack up quickly and compactly when you’re ready to leave.

One thing we did notice though was that the long ridge running through the center of the pad seemed like it would reduce its strength. Several RVers who used it over longer periods of time reported that it broke or bent in half along that line. So long as you’re using it for lighter RVs though this shouldn’t be a problem.

One thing that didn’t hit us until we’d put it through its paces is that the core benefit of the Utility Block, it’s multi-purpose nature, wasn’t actually that useful. For most RVers they either use leveling blocks or they use jacks and therefore jack pads. Having both could theoretically come in handy, but isn’t the big feature we initially thought it was. Thankfully the Utility Block works well in both its rolls, so it still gets a place here.

The Quality Plastics Utility Block is a good product with a somewhat curious design ethos. It works well as both a leveling block or a jack pad though, so we won’t question it.

Andersen Hitches Jack Block – Stabilize Your RV

The Andersen Hitches Jack Block is a heavy duty jack pad built for a variety of different vehicle types. At first glance it looks like nothing so much as an upside down red bucket, and it honestly works in much the same way.

It’s designed to work with hitch posts, jacks, and even as a step stool or seat. The circular build gives you a large and stable surface to place your jack on, and integral magnets make it a cinch to properly line it up underneath your jack.

The blocks nest into one another for easy storage and can even be used two high if you need a taller base for your jack. They’re rated at 6,000 lbs each and provide a very stable base that helps reduce movement within your RV.

One of the only real downsides to the Jack Block is having to buy enough of them. They’re sold singly and only provide the most noticeable benefits in groups of four.

If you’re looking to try something new to spice up your RVs stabilization and set up the Andersen Hitches Jack Block isn’t a bad way to do it.

The Camco Yellow Stabilizer Jack Support is a 7” jack stand specifically designed for use when reaching level isn’t possible with your jack’s basic length. It allows you to extend your jacks and still provides a firm base for your RV.

They’re rated for 5,000 pounds and use a unique three cell design that allows the heavy duty plastic they’re made from to bear a much heavier weight while simplifying setup. Even better, they’re designed to nest into one another for much easier storage.

Best of all, these are priced at a really affordable level for such a capable stabilizer jack pad.

They’re up to 18” across and extremely thick, thick enough to weigh in at a full 12 pounds for the heaviest model. All that size and weight gives you an incredibly capable and effectively indestructible jack pad that won’t bend, won’t rot, and definitely won’t break.

The counterpoint to this is that they’re heavy, large, and take up a lot of space with a set of four. You’re going to need a pretty substantial dedicated storage space for the Road Warrior’s, something not everyone has available in their RV.

Even better, they have a built in post hole to allow you to use them with other styles of jacks if you need to. They’re rated at 2,000 pounds each and designed to nest together for easier storage down the line.

For their intended purpose they work great. Scissor jacks can be a real pain to properly stabilize with regular jack pads and these work perfectly with them to help protect your jack and the road underneath it.

Jack pads only have a few key features you need to consider. The most important are material type, weight capacity, ease of use, and durability.

The bulk of jack pads are priced within a consistent range and quite affordable. You can get pretty good pads for under $20 for a pack of four, with the next level up not much more expensive.

On the higher end of the market, and especially when we’re talking jack pads built for heavy weight RVs, prices can jump up to $40 or more per pad.

Weight Load

By far the most important factor when picking out RV jack pads is their weight load. The best jack pads in the world aren’t going to work for you if they aren’t rated to hold the load of your RV.

Trying to level your RV on inadequate jack pads can lead to damaged jacks and other mishaps you definitely don’t want to deal with while out trying to relax.

Make sure any jack pads you consider offer a comfortable extra margin of load for your RV.

Ease of Use

It may surprise new RVers to learn that there are actually some jack pads that are a pain to use. Most are simple in design and set up, basically just acting as a small pad that your jack can rest on, but some require actual installation when they’re being used for a more precise fit.

Figure out what level of effort you’re willing to put into getting your jacks set up before you by the very best, but difficult to use, RV jack pads.

Number of Pads

Love how it stabled my camper!!

These chocks are sturdy. They have a slight curve to fit the tire. Won't expire like some of the cheap plastic ones. Great piece of mind that the trailer is well chocked and not going anywhere. Very happy with this purchase (an all of OxBlox products I have: Trailer jack block, 3/4" rubber pads, 1/4" rubber pads)!

These are heavy duty jack blocks! I’m looking forward to using them next month.

We LOVE these things. Granted you need to have the space available to store them and the weight allowance but they are worth the cost. We’ve had them for a couple months now and the pros WAY outweigh the cons. Don’t hesitate to use these!
