What is Unaccompanied Minor Service?

Young children traveling without a parent or legal guardian are considered to be unaccompanied minors. Some airlines provide a service to assist these children from their point of departure to their final destination.

What age must my child be to travel without a parent?

EasyJet does not accept unaccompanied minors under the age of 16. Children under 16 years of age cannot travel unless accompanied by a person aged 16 years or older who will take responsibility for the minor.

SeatGuru was created to help travelers choose the best seats and in-flight amenities.

Airlines share their rules for travelling with kids – including easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways

holiday kids

The clocks have gone forward, the evenings are getting lighter, which means one thing – summer is on its way.

And with that, summer holidays with the family.

But gone are the days of throwing some bikinis and a passport in a bag and heading out the door: now there are buggies and travel cots to think about.

Not to mention squirming children and extra costs to sit together as a family .

When it comes to airlines, some cater for families needs better than others. Here's what you can expect from popular airlines when you're travelling with kids.

  • ‘Ideal’ age gap for siblings revealed, according to research
  • All the Easter holiday freebies you can get for your kids
  • ‘My 13 year old daughter masked her autism for years'

easyJet's website says it's tried to make things 'as easy as possible' for families traveling together.

  • It promises to board you early if you have children under five
  • You can carry two additional items for your child in the hold for free such as for travel cots, pushchairs or car seats

Can I sit with my kids?

easyJet will always try and seat you with your family but to be in with a better chance of all sitting together it advises checking in early.

'If you’re travelling with children it’s important that you tell us when making a booking,' easyjet states. 'Simply add the number of children and infants and their ages during the booking process.

'If you haven't yet bought seats for your family the best way to ensure everyone is seated together is to check in as early as possible.'

The website adds: 'Whilst our seating system will always try to seat families together, seats are allocated on a first come first served basis so the earlier you check in the more likely you are to be seated together.'

If you leave it until the last minute, there's less likely to be space for you to sit with your family, however easyjet will still try its best to seat you near your kids.

'We’ll still make sure each child under 12 is seated close to an adult on your booking,' easyJet states. 'Infants (children under 2) need to sit with an adult either on their lap or in an adjacent seat.'

If you do want to guarantee you're all seated together, however, you can pay a fee for reserved seating and pick your seats well in advance so you know you'll be sitting together.

Travelling with Ryanair ? The airline allows you to bring two items of carry-on baby equipment for free which must be tagged at the check-in desk or boarding gate.

On the airline's website, it explains: 'If you bring a car seat for an infant under 2 years of age and wish them to sit in this car seat for the duration of the flight, you will need to book an extra seat for them.

'You may bring a car seat on board for an infant or child if it is approved for flying. Ryanair only permit forward facing car seats.'

When flying with Ryanair, you MUST pay for reserved seating, however, this can actually make flying slightly cheaper.

This is because, when an adult purchases a reserved seat for £4 they can select up to four children’s seats for free (for kids aged two to 11 years), rather than paying for reserved seating for the whole family.

If there are no seats to sit with your little ones, Ryanair states that you will have to pick another flight.

Children under two need to sit on your lap on Ryanair flights, so there’s no need to pay for reserved seating for them.

British Airways

British Airways (BA) allows children aged between two and 11 to have the same weight of free checked baggage allowance as their parent, depending on what cabin you're flying in

The airline will try and sit you with your family based on availability, but this can mean you’ll be seated in adjacent rows or across the aisle.

All children under 12, however, will be seated with an accompanying adult.

BA's website states: 'To ensure your family has the best seats when you fly, we recommend choosing yours in advance when you book. There may be an additional fee for this.'

TUI will provide the following:

  • Prams and car seats will be kept in the hold for free and can be given to staff before you board
  • You can also board your flight first. The website states this is 'so your little ones have time to settle before everyone else comes onboard'.

You can select where you sit on a TUI flight when you upgrade to 'Select Your Seat'.

However, any children under 12 will automatically be seated with at least one adult in the party.

TUI explained: 'This means either in the same row, one row in front or behind, or across the aisle. If this doesn’t happen when you check in, you can call us on 0203 451 2688.'

Jet2 allows customers to bring a collapsible pushchair, a car seat and a travel cost in the hold free of charge as long as the total weight totals less than 10kg. This allowance is per child.

Jet2 said it 'endeavour[s] to seat children & infants under the age of 12 next to their accompanying adults' and if they can't, then they seat them as close as possible, and no more than one row away.

The website adds: 'We would encourage you to book seats in advance to ensure you reserve the seats you want for your travelling party. '

Flying Easyjet with a Baby or Toddler: Our Experiences

Easyjet is one of the budget European airlines and unsurprisingly, budget airlines come with more restrictions and rules to follow. How is it to fly Easyjet with a baby or toddler?

We flew with kids on almost every European airline. I won’t deny that we were hesitant to travel with our kids on budget airlines, but on a few occasions, we had no other option than to pick Easyjet with a baby and toddler in tow. We tried routes in and between France, Spain, Italy, and Sweden.

Here’s everything to know about flying with a baby on Easyjet, including the most important: personal experience when it comes to luggage and seating restrictions.

Easyjet with Infant

Easyjet accepts newborns as young as 14 days old and there are no exceptions given to infants younger than this, even with a doctor’s note.

When traveling with babies under 2 years old you have a choice between booking them as a lap infant or buying a seat for them.

Note that there are no bassinets offered on Easyjet flights as most flights are relatively short.

If you choose to purchase a seat for your infant, you must bring an approved infant car seat or CARES harness that has to be used for take-off and landing.

As with most airlines, you are only allowed to have one lap baby per adult ticket with another sitting in own seat safely secure. However, you can fly Easyjet with two infants per adult in total, so your twins or 2 under 2 will be fine with just you.

Infant Food on Easyjet

As Easyjet is a budget airline that only flies short distances, food is not included in your ticket for any age. There are meals and snacks available to purchase onboard for adults, but Easyjet doesn’t provide any baby food or meals so you will need to bring your own.

You are allowed to bring baby food, milk, and sterilized water (must be in a baby bottle) in your carry-on bag as long as it all fits inside a clear 20 cm x 20 cm bag. The 100ml limit on liquids doesn’t apply to baby food or water, but you might be asked to taste it while going through security to prove what it is.

For toddlers and children, there’s always some snack available for purchase.

Easyjet infant on lap

Easyjet Lap Infant

It costs £25 per infant in arms on Easyjet flights and you need to book this in advance to ensure your whole family is accounted for.

When making your booking online you will be asked how many children and infants are traveling with you on the flight. If you add just one infant here it is assumed that they will be seated on your lap unless you contact customer service to buy them their own seat.

Baby Facilities on Easyjet

There are baby changing tables at the front and back of all Easyjet planes for you to use, just ask the flight attendant where they are.

The changing tables are small, and so are the bathrooms. However, it’s manageable for small babies. The crew almost made sure we were fine when changing the little one.

Note that Easyjet doesn’t have any additional supplies such as nappies or wipes so make sure you bring more than enough to last the whole flight.

Easyjet Car Seat Policy

Kids of all ages are allowed to use approved travel car seats onboard Easyjet flights as long as you have paid for their individual seats. However, you cannot place car seats in emergency exit rows or other restricted seats.

You are also only allowed to have 1 infant per group of 3 seats (in a row) .

Accepted Car Seats on Easyjet

Easyjet only allows you to use forward-facing car seats on board that can be safely secured to the seat.

If your child can sit up unassisted, you can also choose to use CARES if your child weighs between 10 and 20 kg (22 and 44 lbs) and is under 100 cm (40 inches) tall.

easyjet child travel documents

Baggage Allowance for Babies and Kids on Easyjet

If you have booked a seat for your child or infant, they are entitled to the same luggage allowance as adults for both cabin and checked baggage .

The Easyjet baby policy also allows you to bring an additional diaper bag smaller than 45 x 36 x 20 cm with baby essentials on top of your regular cabin bag when traveling with an infant (ticketed or not). The bag must be placed under the seat in front of you during the flight.

Lap babies are not entitled to their own checked baggage however you can check up to 2 baby-related items per child or infant you are flying with for free.

Additional free checked items (2 per child):

  • collapsible or non-collapsible pram
  • booster seat
  • baby back carrier

These can be checked in at the regular baggage drop or at the gate, at least according to Easyjet. In reality, it truly depends on the airport staff and we encountered numerous issues when checking our items.

At Nantes Airport, we tried checking our car seats at the counter and we were told that it wasn’t possible and sent to gate check it. At the gate we were told that they’re not allowed to gate check any items, so we need to take it on board (ironically, because booster seats aren’t approved for in-flight use). Thankfully, both car seats fit in the overhead bin, but if we had a bigger stroller or bigger car seat, I’m not sure what would they do with it.

A similar situation occurred at Geneva Airport when staff insisted that we could not take our perfectly collapsable Babyzen Yoyo stroller on board or even to the gate. They made us check the stroller at the check-in counter.

That said, you cannot truly rely on Easyjet luggage policy based on our experience.

Easyjet Stroller Policy

Easyjet Stroller Policy

You are technically allowed to gate check a stroller free of charge in addition to your regular luggage allowance if you are traveling with a baby.

Ironically, Easyjet stroller policy in reality seems to be as fluctuating as their luggage policy. Officially, to bring a stroller into the cabin you need to purchase a large cabin bag. In our case, one time we could bring it on top of the large cabin bag, while another time we were refused to despite purchasing it.

Either way, the stroller has to fit within the dimensions of 56 x 45 x 25 cm including any wheels or handles.

Gate Checking Baby Items

As previously explained, for each infant or child ticket you purchased you are allowed to bring up to 2 family items free of charge in addition to your regular checked luggage allowance.

The additional items you choose to bring can either be dropped off at check-in or gate checked before boarding for your convenience but you’ll need to go to baggage claim to retrieve them at your destination.

Entertainment for Kids on Easyjet

The first thing to know about flying with children on Easyjet is that they do not have entertainment systems in the back of each seat.

While there are kid-friendly TV shows and games on their inflight entertainment program, you will need to bring your own devices such as a smartphone or iPad that can be connected to wifi to access it.

In addition to their inflight entertainment, Easyjet sometimes offers a “Flybrary” which provides children’s books for use on board .

Even though both of these entertainment options are offered, I wouldn’t advise relying on this alone to entertain your children so it’s best to bring along some of your own toys.

Travelling with Children: Tips for an EasyJet Journey

Travelling with children can be a daunting task, especially on a busy airline like EasyJet. However, with some careful planning and preparation, you can make your journey a lot smoother. In this article, we will explore some valuable tips and strategies to help you navigate the challenges of travelling with children on an EasyJet flight.

Understanding the Challenges of Travelling with Children

Travelling with children presents its own set of unique challenges. From dealing with anxiety and stress to addressing common issues, it’s important to be well-prepared. Let’s explore some of the potential hurdles and how to overcome them.

Identifying Common Issues

Children often struggle with issues like motion sickness, boredom, and restlessness during flights. Identifying these common problems is the first step towards finding effective solutions. Be aware of your child’s particular needs and address them accordingly.

One common issue that children face while traveling is motion sickness. The feeling of nausea and dizziness can make the journey uncomfortable for them. To combat this, it’s advisable to pack some motion sickness medication or natural remedies like ginger candies or wristbands that apply pressure to certain points on the wrist to alleviate symptoms.

Boredom is another challenge that parents often encounter when traveling with children. Long flights or car rides can leave kids feeling restless and bored. To keep them entertained, pack a variety of activities such as coloring books, puzzles, handheld games, or even a tablet loaded with their favorite movies or games. Engaging them in interactive games like “I Spy” or “20 Questions” can also help pass the time.

Restlessness is a common issue among children during travel. Sitting in one place for an extended period can be challenging for them. Encourage them to stretch their legs and take short walks up and down the aisle of the plane or make frequent stops during road trips . This will help them burn off excess energy and reduce restlessness.

Addressing Anxiety and Stress

Travelling can be stressful for anyone, but it can be especially overwhelming for children. Take the time to explain the process to them and reassure them about the journey. Providing them with familiar items, such as their favorite toy or blanket, can help alleviate anxiety.

Another effective way to address anxiety and stress is to involve children in the planning process. Let them choose some activities or destinations they are excited about. This will give them a sense of control and make them feel more involved and invested in the trip.

Additionally, practicing relaxation techniques with your child can help reduce anxiety. Deep breathing exercises, visualization, or listening to calming music can all contribute to a more relaxed and peaceful travel experience.

It’s also important to be prepared for unexpected situations that may cause stress or anxiety. Pack a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and any necessary medications. Knowing that you are prepared for any minor emergencies can provide a sense of security for both you and your child.

Travelling with children requires careful planning and consideration. By identifying common issues and addressing anxiety and stress, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey for the whole family.

Preparing for Your EasyJet Journey

Proper preparation is key when travelling with children. From booking your flight to packing the essentials, here are some steps to follow to ensure a hassle-free journey on EasyJet.

Travelling with children can be both exciting and challenging. To make your EasyJet journey a smooth and enjoyable experience, it is important to plan ahead and take into consideration the specific needs of your little ones. By following these tips, you can ensure that your trip is stress-free and memorable.

Booking Your Flight

When booking your EasyJet flight, consider factors such as flight timing and layovers. Opt for flights that align with your child’s sleep schedule or choose longer layovers to allow for breaks and stretching. It’s always a good idea to check the flight duration and choose a time that suits your child’s routine.

EasyJet offers a range of options when it comes to booking your flight. From economy to business class, you can choose the seating arrangement that best suits your family’s needs. If you have a baby or a toddler, you may want to consider booking a seat with extra legroom to ensure their comfort throughout the journey.

Additionally, EasyJet provides special services for families travelling with children. These services include priority boarding, which allows you to board the plane early and settle in before the rush begins. This can be particularly helpful when travelling with young children who may need extra time to get settled.

Packing Essentials for Kids

When it comes to packing, make sure to include all the essentials your child might need during the journey. These include spare clothes, favorite snacks, entertainment devices, books, and any necessary medications. Being well-prepared will help you handle unexpected situations more easily.

It’s a good idea to pack a small bag with your child’s favorite toys and activities to keep them entertained during the flight. EasyJet allows passengers to bring a small carry-on bag, so make sure to utilize this space wisely. Consider packing some coloring books, puzzles, or handheld games to keep your child engaged throughout the journey.

In addition to entertainment, it’s important to pack snacks that your child enjoys. EasyJet offers a selection of snacks and drinks onboard, but having some familiar treats can help keep your child content during the flight. Remember to pack some healthy options as well, such as fruit or granola bars, to keep their energy levels up.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack any necessary medications or comfort items that your child may need. Whether it’s a favorite blanket or a specific allergy medication, having these essentials on hand will give you peace of mind during the journey.

Navigating the Airport with Children

Once you arrive at the airport, it’s important to be familiar with the necessary procedures and know how to keep your children entertained while waiting for your flight. Let’s dive into some tips to help you navigate the airport with ease.

Check-In and Security

Arriving early is crucial when travelling with children. Allow plenty of time for check-in and security procedures. Consider using the family line, if available, as it can expedite the process. Ensure that your children understand the importance of following security rules and regulations.

Waiting for Your Flight

Waiting at the airport can be challenging for children, so it’s essential to keep them engaged and entertained. Pack some travel-friendly games, books, or download their favorite shows or movies onto a tablet. Additionally, take advantage of play areas or walking around the airport to burn off energy.

On the EasyJet Flight

During the flight, it’s important to keep your children entertained and well-fed. Let’s explore some strategies for a smooth journey on an EasyJet flight.

As you settle into your seats on the EasyJet flight, you can already feel the excitement building in the air. The anticipation of the journey ahead fills the cabin, and you can’t help but wonder what adventures await you and your family.

Keeping Kids Entertained

Bring a variety of activities to keep your children engaged throughout the flight. Books, coloring books, puzzles, and electronic devices can all be great options. Consider surprise treats or small toys that can be unveiled during the flight to maintain excitement and curiosity.

Imagine your child’s face lighting up as they discover a new coloring book tucked away in their carry-on bag. The vibrant pages and endless possibilities for creativity will keep them occupied for hours. And when they need a break from coloring, they can dive into an enchanting storybook that transports them to far-off lands and imaginary worlds.

For the more tech-savvy kids, electronic devices can be a lifesaver. Whether it’s a tablet filled with educational games or a portable gaming console, these gadgets provide a world of entertainment at their fingertips. Just make sure to bring headphones to keep the noise level down and allow other passengers to enjoy a peaceful journey.

Managing Meals and Snacks

EasyJet provides meals and snacks for purchase onboard, but it’s always a good idea to bring some of your child’s favorite snacks in case they have specific dietary preferences or allergies. Additionally, ensure that your child is well-hydrated during the flight by offering water or juice frequently.

As the flight attendants make their way down the aisle, pushing their carts filled with delectable treats, you can’t help but be tempted by the aromatic scent of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries. The thought of indulging in a delicious snack is enough to make anyone’s mouth water.

But what about the little ones? EasyJet understands that children have unique tastes and preferences, which is why they offer a variety of kid-friendly meals and snacks. From mini sandwiches filled with their favorite fillings to bite-sized fruit cups bursting with vibrant colors, there’s something to satisfy even the pickiest eaters.

However, it’s always a good idea to bring some of your child’s favorite snacks from home. Whether it’s a bag of crunchy pretzels or a box of sweet and juicy raisins, having familiar treats on hand can provide a sense of comfort and familiarity during the flight.

And let’s not forget about hydration. Flying can be dehydrating, especially for little ones. Make sure to offer your child water or juice frequently to keep them refreshed and energized throughout the journey. A sip of cool water can work wonders in combating the dry air and ensuring your child stays hydrated.

Dealing with Potential Problems

While you hope for a smooth journey, it’s important to be prepared for potential problems that may arise. Here are some tips for handling unexpected situations during your EasyJet flight.

When it comes to air travel, delays and cancellations are an unfortunate reality. Despite the best efforts of airlines, unforeseen circumstances such as weather conditions, technical issues, or air traffic congestion can disrupt even the most carefully planned itineraries. In the event of such an occurrence, it’s crucial to stay calm and composed. Remember, the EasyJet staff is there to assist you.

Upon learning about a flight delay or cancellation, the first step is to communicate with the EasyJet staff. They will provide you with up-to-date information regarding the situation and any new arrangements that have been made. It’s essential to listen carefully and ask any questions you may have to ensure you fully understand the next steps.

If you are traveling with children, it’s important to keep them occupied and minimize their frustration during these unexpected situations. Having a variety of activities and snacks on hand can be a lifesaver. Consider packing coloring books, puzzles, or their favorite toys to keep them engaged and entertained. Additionally, having a few healthy snacks and drinks readily available can help alleviate hunger and thirst, making the waiting time more bearable for everyone.

Handling Flight Delays

Flight delays can range from a few minutes to several hours. While it may be tempting to vent your frustration, it’s important to remember that the airline staff is doing their best to resolve the situation. Instead of dwelling on the delay, use this time to explore the airport. Many airports offer various amenities such as shops, restaurants, and even play areas for children. Take this opportunity to stretch your legs, grab a bite to eat, or engage in some retail therapy.

During a flight delay, EasyJet may provide you with vouchers for food and beverages. These vouchers can be used at designated airport restaurants or cafes. Make sure to check the validity period and any restrictions that may apply. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the departure boards and listen for announcements regarding your flight. Stay connected with the EasyJet app or website for real-time updates.

Addressing Health Issues Mid-Flight

While rare, it’s possible for your child to experience discomfort or health issues during the flight. It’s essential to be prepared and know how to handle such situations. If your child complains of ear pain during takeoff or landing, encourage them to swallow, yawn, or chew gum to help equalize the pressure in their ears. For infants, feeding them or using a pacifier can also provide relief.

If your child experiences any other health issues during the flight, such as motion sickness or allergies, don’t hesitate to notify the flight attendants. They are trained to handle emergencies and can provide necessary assistance. The flight attendants may have access to medical supplies or be able to alert the crew about any special requirements your child may have. Remember, your child’s well-being is a top priority for the EasyJet staff.

Travelling with children on an EasyJet journey can be a memorable and enjoyable experience if you are well-prepared. By understanding the challenges, preparing in advance, and being equipped with strategies to handle potential problems, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free journey for both you and your children. Bon voyage!

Check in beforehand or at the airport

EasyJet is one of the few low-cost carriers that won't charge you to check in or print your boarding pass at the airport. But if you aren't checking a bag, you can save time by checking in ahead of time and getting a mobile boarding pass. To check in online, go to the EasyJet website under "Manage Bookings" or use the free app using your booking reference. You'll be prompted to enter your surname and booking reference, then, follow the instructions to download or send the mobile boarding pass to your phone.

Web check-in is available between 30 days and two hours before the flight, giving you plenty of time to get your boarding pass printed or downloaded before you take off. Be prepared to enter advanced passenger information during check-in, which can include details like nationality, passport number, birth date and more. And remember, if you change your booking in any way (select new seats, change the date, name, add an infant or special assistance), you'll have to reprint your boarding pass or download it again.

It's actually okay if you spell your name wrong

If you notice you made a typo when entering your name, you can change it for free. However, if you want to give your ticket to another person entirely, you'll have to pay a fee of $34 to change it online if it's 60 days or more before travel. If it's 60 days or less before departure, the fee is $69. These changes (and any others) to your booking can be made in the Manage Booking section on the EasyJet app or webpage.

Take advantage of EasyJet's impressive app

In 2019, EasyJet's app launched an interesting function: voice flight bookings . You can speak your departure city, destination and travel dates into your mobile's microphone and voilà -- the app will pull up available flights.

This new feature is in addition to the app's Book with Instagram feature that's already available. Using it, you can upload a screenshot of a destination you'd like to visit that you've snapped from social media. If EasyJet flies there (or close by), it will find the location and show you flight options.

You don't need a stamp

Unlike low-cost carrier Ryanair, which mandates non-EU/EEA passengers must have their travel documents checked and stamped at the Ryanair Visa/Document Check Desk before certain flights, EasyJet has no such rule.

If you have your boarding pass and you're not checking a bag, the airline recommends you arrive 60 minutes before your scheduled departure and proceed directly to security. If you need to check a bag, it's best to arrive a minimum of 90 minutes ahead of your scheduled flight to most destinations; however, this may be different when flying to or from spots like Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Serbia.

So, make sure to check the EasyJet website ahead of time when traveling between those countries. Also, note that bag drop closes 40 minutes before the departure time for most flights (60 minutes if departing from the aforementioned countries). And because many airports have self bag drops, be prepared to tag your bag yourself in some cases.

Know the carry-on luggage rules

All passengers can bring one bag on board with a maximum size of 22x18x10 inches including handles and wheels. There is no weight limit, but you must be able to lift your bag into the overhead bin.

Travelers who have purchased an extra-legroom/up front seat, FLEXI fare or hold an EasyJet Plus card can bring an added personal item to place under the seat with a maximum size of 18x14x8 inches.

In some cases, the airline staff may be lax to enforce this one-bag-only rule if you are flying with one bag and one small personal item, like a purse. In other cases, the staff at the gate may strongly enforce the rule. So, if you decide to push the limit and travel with an additional personal item that's not included in your fare, be prepared to put the smaller item inside your carry-on bag if asked, in order to avoid paying extra fees.

According to EasyJet, there is only room for 70 cabin bags in the airplanes' overhead lockers. All remaining cabin bags will be checked and can be collected from the baggage carousel on arrival. So, if you want to be certain your baggage travels with you in the cabin, pack a backpack that can fit under the seat or purchase speedy boarding to be one of the first passengers on the plane.

Know the checked luggage rules

Make sure to weigh your bags ahead of time. (Photo by doble-d / Getty Images)

Each traveler can bring three checked bags weighing under either 33 pounds, 51 pounds or 71 pounds. Checked baggage fees are dependent on route, flight and time of booking. If purchased online, prices range from $10 to $48 for bags weighing up to 33 pounds and from $21 - $52 for those weighing more than 33 pounds up to 51 pounds. An extra $17 for every 7 pounds of weight is added for bags weighing more than 51 pounds on up to 71 pounds.

Passengers can only pay to check the lower-priced 33-pound or less bag online. If you wait to pay for your bag at the airport, you'll be charged $55 at the bag-drop desk or $69 at the boarding gate for a bag up to 51 pounds. Additional weight can only be purchased online in increments of 7 pounds, either at initial booking or post-booking. If your bag weighs more than the amount you pre-purchased, expect to pay an extra $12 per pound above the pre-booked weight.

A final option is to take advantage of EasyJet's Hands Free option. This means that you check your carry-on bag at the bag drop, allowing you to navigate the airport and security checks efficiently without dragging a bag with you. The bags also reportedly arrive first off the baggage carousel. This service costs $10 per person, or $22 for a family or group of three to six passengers.

Here are TPG tips for checked baggage:

  • Always weigh your bag before traveling.
  • Pack a small travel scale to weigh it again before returning home.
  • Book and pay for your checked luggage online to avoid extra charges for doing so at the airport.
  • Ensure your checked baggage doesn't exceed the maximum size. The length + width + height must total under 108in.

Pay for your extras in advance

It's clear from reading the baggage rules that purchasing in advance will save you money. You should consider purchasing your seats and other extras in advance too, not only to save money but to avoid hassle and disappointment later on. Each aircraft has up-front seats, extra legroom seats and regular seats. Prices for seat selection range from $3- $11 for standard seats to $11 - $41 for front, extra legroom or overwing seats. FLEXI fares or EasyJet Plus have seat selection included.

If you choose not to pay extra for seats and are traveling with a group, be sure to check in as early as possible (remember, you can do so 30 days in advance) for the best chance of being seated together. Unfortunately, speedy boarding isn't available as a standalone purchase, but it's available to travelers with an EasyJet Plus card, FLEXI ticket or an up-front or extra-legroom seat.

Consider a FLEXI fare or EasyJet Plus

FLEXI fares allow changes to flight dates and times, plus a free 51-pound checked bag, dedicated bag drop, speedy boarding, Fast Track security at selected airports, a seat at the front of the airplane, an under-seat bag in addition to your cabin bag and a $10 (or currency equivalent) bistro voucher to spend onboard.

EasyJet Plus membership costs $275 per year and includes allocated seating every time you fly, dedicated bag-drop desks, Fast Track security at select airports, speedy boarding, an additional cabin bag and more. This option may be worth it if you fly EasyJet several times per year.

EasyJet partners with other airlines to fly you, well, everywhere

EasyJet flies to over 150 destinations across Europe and North Africa. They also partner with airlines like Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Norwegian, Singapore, Virgin and several others to help serve destinations the airline doesn't fly to itself, like spots in North America, the Caribbean, Asia and beyond. To book these flights go to Worldwide EasyJet .

Be prepared

If you haven't flown EasyJet in a while, you may be pleasantly surprised. Compared to some of the more bare-bones low-cost carriers, EasyJet can seem like a delight -- they even have a seatback pocket!

But don't get too excited. The seats don't recline and have a pitch of a mere 30 inches. All food and beverages are at an added cost, including water. You may have to line up for a while before boarding in order to board early enough to store your carry-on in the overhead bin.

To ensure you'll have a comfortable flight make sure to bring:

  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Water (post-security)
  • A neck pillow, if you plan to sleep
  • A travel scarf or blanket, if you get cold

Read the fine print

This EasyJet cheat sheet will definitely help you prepare for your flight, but remember, the airline can change their policies at any time -- baggage limitations, check-in procedures or fees, etc. So be sure to read the conditions of your fare and ticket before purchasing. It's also a good idea to know and understand your rights as a flyer in case of delays, flight cancellations and strikes. Once you know the rules, your airport and in-flight experience will be much easier.

More easyJet flights to Moscow

easyjet child travel documents

Low-cost airline easyJet has announced plans to launch the first ever flights between Manchester and Moscow. (Featured image is by Petra Links )

The service will launch in spring next year, with easyJet operating four flights per week from its Manchester base.

The new service follows the airline’s expansion at Manchester Airport last month, when it added a seventh aircraft and increased flight frequency to Paphos and the Greek island of Santorini.

It also launched new services to Venice and Reykjavik, and has now added an eighth aircraft to its Manchester base.

With the new aircraft, easyJet will launch flights to Prague and Thessaloniki alongside its new Moscow route.

“These new services exactly fit easyJet’s ‘join the dots’ strategy which is to add flights to destinations from multiple bases across Europe, providing passengers with convenient point to point services,” said Carolyn McCall, Chief Executive of easyJet.

“Russia has a fast growing economy and is a country rich in culture and history – so a direct link from the North of England has been long overdue. With our strong European network we look forward to connecting Moscow with other European cities.”

The easyJet service to Prague will operate three times a week, while there will be a twice-weekly service to Thessaloniki. Tickets for these flights, along with the Moscow service, will go on sale in the coming weeks.

“The basing of an additional aircraft and the inclusion of Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, is also welcome as are more services to the Czech Republic through Prague,” said Ken O’Toole, Chief Commercial Officer at Manchester Airports Group.

“easyJet will serve 32 routes from Manchester next Summer and we look forward to working with them on the continued growth.”

The new Manchester to Moscow service follows on from easyJet’s announcement of flights to the Russian capital from Gatwick Airport.

Also launching in spring next year, the service will operate twice-daily, with fares starting from £125 one-way.
